BoAB September Survey 2020 Results

Okay gang, it’s the annual blog census results and analysis you’ve been dying to know, I’m sure! We had a grand total of 21 responses. Thank you so much for participating! Let’s go right into it!

DEMOGRAPHICS

I don’t really have anything super meaningful to say about the demographic information, it kind of aligns with what I expected. The biggest chunk of you are female between age 19-24, which means you are definitely drinking age in Canada and certainly in Alberta! Caesars for everyone! ...I mean, I don’t drink and a Caesar probably wouldn’t be my first choice, but the option’s on the table here.

(I realize having ‘30′ on two different options was a silly move) (I will fix that next time)

Thanks for responding to these questions whether you divulged this info or not. High five to all my Hockey Gender peeps out there (which was kind of my lame attempt at ‘gender is whack and idk what it is’ while still being on theme). ALBERTA and YOU

So this question was a little bit over complicated and I will definitely rethink it for next year, probably splitting it into separate questions because sometimes one answer wasn’t enough (i.e. “Just Curious” doesn’t tell me whether you live in Canada or not- not that I would make you say, but it’s hard for me to tell whether you meant to check another answer and forgot or if that’s all you felt like saying). Overall, graphing this information as it is doesn’t feel like it helps me as much as I had expected?

This graph is far more enlightening and to the point: the vast majority of you have never lived in Alberta (or at least, said so! I forgot to put an option similar to “rather not say” above, for which I apologize!) Those of you who do live in Alberta live in one of the three biggest cities, and more of you in Edmonton, hehe. It is kind of funny, I sort of expected most people would be from Calgary!

Like I’ve said, it’s sort of incredible what a huge proportion of you are not from Alberta. Whether you’ve visited or not or have any consciousness of it outside of this blog at all, welcome, I hope you enjoy your stay! (...I say, currently sitting one province and a strait away from Alberta at this point in time).

Overall, there’s not much of a surprise here, it more or less matches the airtime each of these characters have had so far and I expect it to change a little as I learn more and draw more.

I was kinder with the next question and allowed you to pick as many as you liked, but some people still elected to choose one or go straight for their favourite.

Okay, I see what’s going on here! Pandemic’s got you guys down and you are desperate for a mountain vacation with Eleanor and Calvin. I admit, I have been seriously neglecting Eleanor for the most internationally recognizable of the Alberta municipalities (and dare I say... the most celebrated?). The people have spoken, and I hear you!

As for Calvin, huh, I can’t imagine why you want to see him so much. You want to see him suffer more at my hands? Is that it? Hmmm.

Also, I am not sure how I expected to interpret the “someone who hasn’t been introduced” mystery-character option. Do you guys want literally anyone introduced, or do you have a specific craving? Feel free to message me, anon or otherwise, if you want to speak more to that.

I am oh so very pleased to tell you that this whole month of October is going to be dedicated to Character Profiles, and I will be wrapping up Madeline’s first profile page today. We are going to get (if I am able) a quick fact reference sheet, a relationship chart, and a sort of miscellaneous trivia/attractions page for each character so that I can keep all that stuff organized and consistent and you guys can enjoy future comics without wondering who is who or what they represent.

I was purposefully pretty vague about characters when I was starting this blog, partly because I wanted to see what I could get away with whether I had audience recognition or not, partly because I operate on kind of a “shoot first ask later” approach to things. I know that if I don’t just jump in and start writing that I’ll never post anything, so I’m happy to do this a little later in the blog’s life now that I have time to dedicate to fleshing these guys out.

I’m also happy to address more historical stuff, and a brief synopsis of each muni’s history will be featured in their bios to help frame any asks you might want to send about that. If you have any questions or a specific time period you are interested in, don’t hesitate to send an ask about it.

Yokai Watch Wibble Wobble Translation

(Masterpost for my Yokai Watch translations can be found here)

This might be considered spoilers if you don’t want to know about events in the Japanese version of Wibble Wobble, which could potentially arrive to the English version one day.

It also contains what might be considered spoilers for Busters 2, so proceed with caution.

A new event has started in Puni Puni, the Japanese version of Wibble Wobble. It features Karakuri Island, the setting of the upcoming Busters 2, as its stage.

In this event, there are 6 new obtainable yokai that I find notable: 4 out of the 8 members of the Bundory family, and 2 Doyagari Tribe yokai.

So, I’d like to go over some of the information on these that has now been revealed thanks to them being befriendable.

Bolded is the original Japanese; for reference and in case someone who is better at Japanese than I reads this, and feels like correcting something.

Bolded and italicized is my translation.

(Number) Indicates I got a specific comment to make on that part in the translation notes.

Please keep in mind that I’m a beginner when it comes to Japanese, so it’s possible that I make mistakes, too.

First of all, when you enter the map for the first time, a little intro movie will play:

He’s making a pun in the original, with 予想外/yosōgai and よそうかい/yosōkai. But admittedly, I am not 100% sure what exactly his pun here means, I just have some assumptions.

Now I will just go over the individual yokai themselves.

I will start with the Bundory Family members, and little side note, the name “Bundory” itself seems to be derived from 分捕る/bundoru, which means “to plunder”.

At first I thought it might be taken from something like きれいね/kireine, which translates to “pretty, no?”, but it seems like it’s actually taken from キレる/kireru, which is slang for “to snap”, “to get angry”, and the like.

“Snap” in this line is  キレちゃう/kirechau in Jaoanese, which is the verb her name is derived from.

What I translated as “Super Ticked-off” is マジギレ/majigire in Japanese, which is derived from the verb she is named after.

I’m not exactly sure, but from what I’ve seen たんと/tanto can translate to “a lot” and his name might be derived from that.  Alternatively, it could also be derived from ちゃんと/chanto, which translates to “properly”.

A Study in Bloomotics (WIP)

This is my main ongoing project, though I can hear my girlfriend saying,”Why aren’t you putting more into the Google Drive?” right now, albiet it’s teasing because she knows I’ve had a bit of a hardtime the past two months. I do want t o write more of this piece and work to complete it by the end of the year because I don’t want the idea to become stale in my mind. So yeah, here’s a chunk of my biggest WI recently.

And yes, I will be putting more in my Google Drive. My girlfriend, who is kindly pushing me to keep a good, healthy pace, deserves more to read, hehe.

“Look, flowers don’t make my stomach do flips. You… do,” Briar finished lamely, looking down at her plate of noodles. She shifted her fork through them, spun it, and shoved a ball of food into her mouth, glad to have it occupied. “Ugh, that was such an inside thought.”

Alexander smiled, leaning forward, elbows on the table. “So why not date me before?” she pressed curiously.

“Age of Understanding,” Briar shot back. She shoved another wad of noodle into her mouth, chewing quickly. “And of course, the Code of Purpose.”

“What’s that got to do with anything?”

Briar flexed her gloved hands, crossing them under her chin, fork twirling between her left fingers slowly. “It’s everything. The Age of Understanding and the Code is about understanding, yeah? Understanding a patient’s needs above your own as a conduit for their Better Being, understanding when it’s right to intervene, when to extend your free will. It’s not malpractice. It would have been wrong of me, even as your artificer, to date you then. What would have happened if we broke up? What would have happened if I was heartbroken and vengeful despite my promise to uphold The Code and Understanding?”

Briar paused, chewed on more noodles, then leveled her gaze. “I could have coded your legs bios to Itches at the Joints Sometimes or Kneecap Blowout. Certainly, The Tangle would have been able to trace it back to me, but not after you’d have had some pretty nasty pain. And trust me, we’re good now, but the body doesn’t like multiple injuries still.
