Rise of a Queen - Nikolai Lantsov x OC PART 12
The end of the war could have marked the perfect beginning of a fairytale for Nikolai and Taya. He was Tsar, the Darkling had been defeated, Ravka could finally breathe again and the couple could start focusing on their relationship. But the reality was no fairytale.
Only days after the crown had been placed on Nikolai's head, he became swept up in the responsibilities of a ruler. Endless meetings, balls, travels, and negotiations began, along with the much-needed rebuilding of the cities that had suffered during recent times. Whenever he was in the palace, there was always someone there requesting his attention or calling him to a meeting or following him with paperwork. Though more often than not, Nikolai was absent from the capital, traveling around his kingdom to meet his people and mend relations with West Ravka. It felt as if sleep or a peaceful meal had become a luxury a king could not afford.
Taya wasn't fairing much better. She tried to help Nikolai whenever she could, but she was soon also swept up in the Saadovska affairs. She had inherited the family fortune, but also her father's businesses. And there were more of them than she had ever expected! Not only did her family own several remarkable fabric businesses in Ravka, they also held shares of companies in Fjerda and Shu Han and had close business ties with Kerch traders. Furthermore, there was more land in her family's possession than anyone in all of Ravka could even imagine, including large estates and even simply lands for agriculture. It was so much that Taya spent a good few weeks trying to wrap her hand around it all before starting correspondence with her father's former business partners. Some of them were kind and understanding, but there were also those, who refused to work with a woman or tried to cheat her. For Taya this meant a lot of studying. She would spend many nights in the library, reading up on economics and business practices or former contracts until Nikolai would come and carry her back to bed after she had fallen asleep. Whenever he was not around, this task fell to Andrej or one of the twins.
Ultimately, the couple didn't have much time for romance. Ravka was like a child that required constant attention and within the first years, Nikolai and Taya felt burnt out. Yet at the same time, they couldn't feel happier. The country was flourishing, steadily gaining stability, military strength and even some recognition. So although Taya was usually the one pushing them to work more, it was her who announced one morning: "We need a break."
Nikolai had returned from a long journey to the West just the day before and still looked incredibly tired even after a good night of sleep. "What do you suggest?", he asked, his face still half-buried in the pillow. "That we run away?"
Taya chuckled, as she sat up, running a hand through his hair. "I don't think we'd get very far.", she admitted. "But I do think we can take a vacation for a couple of days without Ravka falling apart again. Besides, there is this small estate by the sea I want to visit."
"Estate by the sea?" Now Nikolai's curiosity had been piqued and he slowly half sat up as well, hazel eyes staring at her full of interest.
"Yes, apparently it has been in my family's possession for quite some time. My great great grandfather bought it for easier business with the local fishing industry. And it would be my chance to see the ocean for the first time."
Although she had joined Nikolai on several of his journeys, none of them had taken her all the way to the sea, which she longed to finally visit. "Let's do it.", Nikolai agreed, suddenly fully invested in the idea. "We will tell everyone today and be on our way by the evening."
Taya loved his enthusiasm and spontaneous nature and she nodded enthusiastically. "I will take care of packing.", she said, already mentally going over everything they would need for the short trip.
It was with a newfound energy that the two started their day, making sure that everyone knew about their departure, while also preparing for the journey. Tolya and Tamar insisted on coming along, but Nikolai refused. He wanted some time alone with Taya and where they were going, they would need neither servants nor bodyguards, he figured.
Everyone was so taken aback by the Tsar's sudden decision that nobody had much time to argue or raise concerns. And by evening, Nikolai and Taya were ready to depart. They hadn't packed much and could easily take one of Nikolai's smaller aircrafts, where he took care of navigation, while Taya kept the airship going. Traveling at night was difficult, but also much safer.
The sun hadn't even risen when they arrived at the small estate on a hill, overseeing the sea and the nearby fishing town. It was a two-story building beaten by the rough coastal weather, but still in good condition. Surrounding it was a garden full of wildflowers and tall grass. It was clear that nobody had tended to this place in quite some time. Using the key she had found in her father's study, filed correctly to the matching estate, Taya opened the door, revealing a dusty hallway, smelling of sea salt and stuffy air. At least they found that the place was equipped with working lights.
Leaving their luggage in the hallway, Nikolai and Taya just explored, opening all windows to air out the place. There was a parlor downstairs, as well as a study, a kitchen, three servant rooms, and a storage chamber. Upstairs were bathrooms and generous bedrooms, offering a stunning view of the ocean. The sunsets from this place would be quite the sight, Taya thought.
The furniture had been covered in sheets to prevent them from dusting, but they would still need to air out all linens, pillows and covers the next day. "Seems like your ancestors were quite the passionate sailors", Nikolai announced, as he joined Taya upstairs. He had found some old photographs and paintings in the study, showing her grandfather and great grandfather in this estate together with sea captains or standing in front of ships themselves.
Taya looked at them with interest, seeing them for the first time. "I didn't know that. But maybe it explains why I always wanted to go to sea.", she ran a finger over one of the photographs, realizing how much her grandfather resembled her father. A pang of pain shot through her, but she didn't allow it to take over. She would make her family proud by doing her best to carry on their legacy instead of shedding tears.
_____________________
After two days, Nikolai and Taya had settled into their little sea estate. Seeing as the linen had continued to smell of stuffy room, Taya had simply brought fresh ones in town. Not wanting any servants to disturb their peace, the couple took care of everything themselves and Taya discovered that she knew nothing about actual housekeeping. But it was fun to learn and try, even though the first meal she attempted to cook ended up being more burnt than edible.
Nikolai caught some fish, which they roasted over a fire and that tasted better than anything Taya had eaten in a while. Still, they decided to start eating in town to be among people and see what they lived like. Taya had bought some local clothes, allowing the two to blend in and for Nikolai to go unrecognized. It was lovely, living a normal life without duties or burdens.
"One day, when we are old and grey, I hope we can sit here and watch the sunset as well.", Taya said on the last evening of their stay, when the two were sitting in front of the house by the cliff, waiting for the sun to turn the ocean into the stunning shades of orange and purple Taya admired.
Nikolai smiled at her. It would be a lovely future indeed. "And who will be running Ravka?"
"Not us, for sure.", she replied with a laugh. "I suppose it would be our son."
A son. Nikolai had never thought about children before. He had been too busy being Sturmhond, getting the crown, fighting a civil war or just being Tsar. But now that she had said it, the vision would not leave his head. What would their son look like? Would his hair be darker? And whose eyes would he inherit? He hoped it would be his mothers, for he loved the blue more than he could put into words. He also hoped he would have Taya's personality, far more suitable for a ruler.
"If we do have a son, let's name him Mikhail. After my father.", she suddenly added. It was common for a prince to carry the name of a former ruler, an ancestor from the father's side, but Taya was ready to break with that tradition.
"Mikhail... I like it.", Nikolai said finally, his arm sneaking around Taya, as she leaned her head against his shoulder. "Though if he ends up anything like us as children, I feel sorry for us already." Both laughed and then just enjoyed the spectacular colors of the sunset before them.
________________________________
After the trip, Nikolai returned to work with newfound purpose and energy. He wanted to build a strong Ravka for the people and for the future. He wanted a stable country should he and Taya indeed have a son one day. He was also more determined than ever to finally marry the woman, who had been by his side for so long.
"I have an important task for you.", he announced, as Genya entered his office one afternoon. "But I must ask for utter discretion."
"Of course.", the redhead vowed, looking more and more intrigued.
"I need you to plan something"
"A Wedding?!", Genya almost squealed. "Your wedding?!"
Nikolai didn't even have a chance to answer before Genya rushed forward, both hands slamming on his desk. "I have everything thought out already.", she announced. "I have been planning this since your coronation. It needs to be a grand affair, of course. Worthy of a Tsar. But it definitely needs personal elements. I'm thinking of a lot of blue highlights to symbolize your time at sea and Taya being a Grisha and..."
"Genya... Genya.. slow down.", Nikolai spoke, even though he felt almost guilty interrupting her. She seemed so excited and he was glad to know that he had so many people behind him.
"Oh, I apologize."
Nikolai smiled, shaking his head. "No need. But what I specifically want from you is a design for a ring. Traditionally, Taya would get the Lantsov Emerald, but that is off the table.", he explained. "But I don't just wanna choose something from the treasury. I want something especially made for her. Something meaningful."
So it wasn't a wedding, but Genya was still excited nevertheless. "Oh, I will think of something!" It would be blue, she thought, but it definitely needed elements of green to hint at the traditional emerald. Without a second to waste she got to work, while Nikolai went back to planning on how he could ask Taya to marry him again.
The last proposal had been a lousy one, he thought. Absolutely not worthy of a future Queen and especially not worthy of someone like Taya. She wouldn't like an over-the-top gesture, he figured, but it had to be special nevertheless. Perhaps the finished ring would offer more inspiration.
He had no idea that he would not be asking Taya for quite some time...

Crystal Studies: Amber
Other Names: Elektron (Greek)
Description: Amber can come in many colors ranging from yellow to red. It is a unique crystal because it comes from a biological process instead of a geological process, as it is fossilized tree resin. A good tip to figuring out if you have real Amber instead of a fake is rubbing your thumb over the surface for a few seconds then smelling to see if it smells like pine. Other ways to judge the authenticity of Amber are as follows: Amber will be warm to the touch because it is a poor conductor, and Authentic Amber will float in water, while other fakes will sink
Formation and Composition: Like previously mentioned, Amber is the fossilized resin of evergreen trees. Most of the Amber on the market comes from a now extinct species of pine found mostly in the Baltic region. The resin from these ancient trees slowly hardened over time to create stones of resin, sometimes capturing organic life and preserving it within the stone! We have many examples of this happening, especially with insects.
Location: While there are many deposits of Amber around the world, the most significant ones are in the Baltic region, where the extinct pine found its home. This includes countries like Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Poland, Norway, and Sweden.
Cleansing Method: The main caution with Amber is that it is very fragile and light weight, so don’t go throwing it around! Besides that, it is safe to cleanse in any method of choice, and is safe to use in direct infusion elixirs.
Physical Healing Properties: Before talking about the healing properties of Amber, I would like to point out that crystal healing should never replace a visit to your doctor. You can use it as a supplement, but please go to your medical professional! That being said, Crystal Healers use Amber for the healing of physical ailments including increasing vitality and energy levels in the body, stimulating the digestive system, and speeding up the body’s natural healing process.
Emotional Healing Properties: Amber is a stone linked to the Sun, and therefore encourages those things within us. It has a happy vibration, bringing the sunshine back into our lives after a dark period. Amber helps us find our purpose and reason for doing things. That can be a life’s purpose, or just the motivation needed to finish a project. It is also a powerful stone for helping our relationships, encouraging love and affection either platonic or romantic.
Meditation: Amber has a very ancient energy that may be beneficial in meditation. It connects us to the earth and our ancestors who reside within it. This makes it the perfect stone for exploring past lives through meditation and connecting to our own family and relationships in the past, present, and future.
Divinatory Meaning: In dreams, Amber can indicate a journey on your horizon. In other divinatory practices, Amber represents a chance romance. Think carefully before pursuing this however, especially before you give up a reliable relationship for a new and exciting one.
Magickal Properties: Amber is one of the oldest gemstones used for jewelry. We have found Amber talismans dating back to 8000 BCE! Due to its warm temperature, Amber is often seen as possessing the life force of the earth. It has been used in ritual and magickal practices to represent the Mother Goddess and other deities. It is also a fossil, not a stone, making it perfect for workings dealing with time and history. It is also associated with the element of spirit because it was once living. In traditional Wiccan circles, the High Priestess wears a necklace of alternating jet and amber, representing the God and Goddess respectively. Amber is also said to be the traditional stone of Witches, and supposedly amplifies their powers. This is why Amber is great to have on hand during magickal workings! It will amplify the effects of any spell or ritual.
History and Folklore: Perhaps one of the most famous myths about Amber is that of the Norse Goddess Freya. It is said that the Goddess of Love and Beauty adored beautiful things, especially jewelry. One day as she was walking, she wandered close to the border between her land and that of the dwarves. She saw that they were crafting a beautiful golden necklace. Taken by its beauty, she asked them if she could buy it. The dwarves said no as it was very special to them. Freya was taken aback, and asked what she had to do to own the beautiful necklace. The dwarves said that she could buy the necklace with her love by marrying each dwarf for one day and one night as payment. Freya agreed. When she returned to her kingdom, she hid the necklace in shame for what she had done. The trickster God, Loki, found the necklace, showing it to her husband Odr, who was very angry with Freya for betraying him. Odr left to wander the earth for eternity, and Freya never saw him again. It is said that Freya too wanders the earth looking for her husband, crying tears of Amber.

A “N/A” doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t toxic to people or animals, it just means I couldn’t find anything (and I don’t consume anything I make, so I don’t usually have to worry too much about that).

Colour Correspondences
Written and Compiled by George Knowles
Colour plays a powerful role in ritual Witchcraft and Magick. Colours are carefully considered and assigned to all aspects of Spell making, Ritual magick and Festivals.
Colours have symbolic associations representing occult powers, and have their own energy frequencies that emanate specific influences. Careful consideration needs to be given to colour correspondences when used with Candles, Clothing, Symbols, Deities influences, Planetary influences, Zodiacal influences and Magickal Days. The use of colour is also important to our meditation and visualisation techniques.
Below is a list of colours and their associations. For further associations and correspondences see:
Black - Is used to invoke the power of Saturn. Contrary to popular belief, black does not indicate evil. Far from it, black is the absence of colour. It is protective and symbolises the night, the universe and the lack of falsehood. Black is symbolic of the blackness of outer space and considered the ultimate source of divine energy.

COSMETIQUE ASTROLOGY
The Libido Fuels Spiritual Growth, Intelligence, and Beauty. Don't Sever Yourself from it. 🔥🐍
The lunar masses prefer and relish hypocrisy and duality when it comes to sexuality, the libido, and the female body. These masses seek to punish, criticize, degrade, and demonize anything that pulls on their libido, stirs their animal nature, and make them feel out of control of themselves. For this reason, often times it is the women who are most in touch with their sexual power who are most violently criticized, simply for refusing to hide their unique sexually-centered strengths and suppress their magnetism to protect others. All of the comments on social media that are violently judging models, instagram models, and sexualized women follow the same pattern, which revolves around beauty or sexuality as being inherently "morally" bad, and implying that there is a trade off in a spiritual sense if you are physically attractive or enjoy your form. The idea pushed on women like it is the gospel, not by complete and satisfied people but by those who are bitter, is “I’d rather be self-realized than beautiful.” Or, “I went to college and am smart so I don’t have to degrade myself and show my body.” as if a female had to be ugly to liberate themselves, or that having plain features or an unfit physique is necessary to go to college. This link between beauty or sexuality and stupidity is all done as a mental censor on their part, and has no basis in scientific studies or physical reality whatsoever (in fact, science proves quite the opposite; in reality, science confirms the doctrine implicit in the Sanskrit language that a persons vibrational and spiritual essence is perfectly represented in their physical form). True female strength isn’t the sacrificing of beauty to attain “higher” things of the intellectual or spiritual realm, but of embracing femininity and its power so fully that you laugh at people’s attempts to suppress or shame your unique beauty and body and you show them that, instead, aligning yourself with your feminine power
and severing yourself from these childish & primitive dualities actually brings you the #spiritualgrowth & intelligence that they will never have. It brings fast transformation and growth fueled by the fire of your satisfied, uniquely expressed libido (connected as well to your improving intuition) growing hotter and stronger in response, burning away your dualistic perspectives, hangups, and jealousy. This all relates to the fact that the chief difference between true occultists or tantriks and the common masses is that tantriks do not create a distinction between reality and their sexual libido, but actually worship the generative force for what it is. An Occultist understands that their balanced sexual desires are inherently connected to Truth, and the root of all life and goodness. This underlying sexual foundation behind any relationship is actually the basis of the relationship, just as the Muladhara center is the base of the body. In reality, the male body is projecting and its first “attachment” to a female is to her form, which then leads to deeper levels of love. if a man chooses a woman only rationally and is not attracted to her body, he is living in a fantasy without having made the first important energetic connection for the male sexual flow, and this is why masturbation to porn is rampant in sexual relationships. There can be no stable relationship without a pure and strong sexual foundation, and everything else grows out of it. All emotions and even the intellect are powered by the sexual foundation, and if there is a false sexual foundation, the relationship will not last no matter how much you want to delude yourself. Sex is the primary and first consideration for a romantic relationship and if there is not sexual compatibility, there is no hope of spiritual development, because spirituality in a nutshell is the control and worship of your sexual energy.
This is why a big part of spirituality, especially in the modern world, revolves around returning back to the truth and root of reality, which revolves around one’s own sexual energy, due to modern society spinning so much illusion and falsehood around this subject and driving a huge wedge between a person and their own life-force. From an elemental perspective, it must be understood that the Earth element is the most complete element, being a condensation of all the preceding elements. The earth element is, of course, shown as our physical body, which becomes beautiful only if we have elemental harmony. A truly “beautiful” person has the intellectual capabilities of having a harmonious air element, the emotional articulation and communication skills of a harmonious water element, the drive and ferocity of the fire element, and the stability and sensuality of the earth element. All of these internal elements then go on to produce beautiful physical features, the air element creating subtlety and length to the appearance, the fire element creating luster and vibrancy, the water element creating magnetism and charm, and the earth element creating voluptuousness or muscular size. Without the corresponding internal virtue, there simply cannot be the physical or external sign of beauty. On the contrary, any distortion of the physical form is a result of an internal moral defect. A person who is always angry or never angry will have a distorted fire element and lack bodily luster in the case of a weak fire element, or will develop acne or oily skin from an overactive one. This is the theory and practice of #Ayurvedic treatment, which teaches a person to achieve and maintain an elemental balance and harmony within their own body for health. This is also the basis behind exercises in #Occultism like the observation of the elemental "tides" that flow at the different times of the day, and also of rituals that utilize visualization of the elements to balance them like the "lesser banishing ritual of the pentagram”. In Freemasonry, we find the metaphor for spiritual practice being likened to the shaping of a crude, ugly stone into a beautiful and perfect one.
This metaphor is most appropriate and the crude, ugly state of the stone initially represents our own #Muladhara center and libido, which must be worked on carefully through our spiritual practice to refine into into a perfect and balanced one. This "cornerstone" is like our libido, the foundation of our practice, not something to be thrown away or neglected. So, you will aways find that Adepts who are the truly "spiritual" people, are not frigid individuals with no life force, but very sexual in a refined sense, and possessing beauty. Upon viewing most individuals who place a severe division between libido and moral goodness, they often look unshaped or unsculpted or dull, in that they neglect their own vitality in fear or hatred of their libido. On the contrary, those who embrace the foundational fires of the libido are “burned” and shaped in accordance with its harsh truth, producing distinct vitality, symmetry, and beauty. This is why #Tantra and Occultism are elitist in nature; it is not that they exclude the common masses from worship, but that the masses exclude themselves from their own dualistic mentality towards sex. The masses fear their own sexual nature and so view the idea that it is holy as blasphemous, and so think Tantra or Occultism is impure or debauched. An Adept indulges the senses and engages in sex in a way that produces liberation, and so they do not fear it or anything else. In Hermetic Qabalah, if we examine the Tree of Life diagram, the sexual foundation is known as Yesod and this sits directly below the center known as Tiphereth or “beauty ”. In this way, it is explained that any expression of sexuality that is not directed towards beauty or #Tiphereth leads eventually to imbalance and evil, due to the departure from the middle pillar of equilibrium, and balance which these two centers sit on. [caption id="attachment_63915" align="alignnone" width="620"] Photo: Pond5[/caption] Now that all the big fall races are over and the weather is getting colder, most people are ready to pack away their sneakers and hibernate. While some consider the winter an off-season, it’s definitely not the time to slack off from training. “Many runners simply take the winter off, but this is a huge mistake,” says Jason Fitzgerald, USATF-certified running coach. “Taking a season off — or barely running at all — prevents most runners from progressing.” Take elite Saucony-sponsored runner Tina Muir, for example. After running the Chicago Marathon in October 2014, Muir has spent time working on the little things to make her a stronger runner like building strength, improving her form, and practicing yoga. “This downtime between racing is the best time to do it,” says Muir. “You can’t throw a lot of this work in when you’re training hard since your muscles are already fatigued. And, this way, you don’t have to spend half the spring and summer getting back into shape.” RELATED: Hate Running? 25 Ways to Learn to Love It In fact, the winter is the perfect time to build a solid foundation for running. “Figure out what your weak links are and to focus on those things,” says Jay Dicharry, director of the REP Biomechanics Lab, author of Anatomy for Runners and USATF-certified coach. “It’s not good enough to just have a strong engine. You need to have a strong chassis too — mobility, stability and strength. That will give you a better body to run with.” So, what’s a runner to do when the temps start dropping and workouts get moved indoors? For starters, focus on these seven key areas this winter. These exercises will help you figure out the right way to move so that you’ll be ready for a strong season of running once the weather warms back up. 7 Tips on How to Run Faster by Spring
1. Maintain Your Base
No matter the season, you want to maintain some level of base fitness. Ideally, you’ll want to keep logging the same amount of miles you’re used to. “If that’s not possible, reduce mileage by 10 to 20 percent. It’s a good way to stay in shape while being on a mental break from harder training,” says Fitzgerald. Reducing intensity is fine, too, just remember: “These aren’t junk miles,” says Dicharry. There are three important things that happen in your body when you train at approximately 60 percent of your maximum heart rate, he says. First, you build capillaries, the smallest blood vessels in your body. More capillaries means more efficient blood flow to your muscles and greater surface area for oxygen to transfer from your bloodstream into your tissues. Second, you build more mitochondria, the energy powerhouses of your cells. More mitochondria means more energy you can use, Dicharry explains. Third, you teach your body to regulate its blood sugar levels better so that you use your energy stores more efficiently. RELATED: 7 Expert Tips for Pacing Yourself on the Run
2. Build a Strong Behind
Many runners are plagued with inactive glutes and weak hips. Due to the inordinate amount of sitting we do in our daily lives, our behinds tend to be unresponsive, compromising their ability to do their job when we need them, like during a race. In fact, research shows that weak hip and bum muscles are often to blame for running injuries. In terms of mechanics, strong glutes help you drive off the ground in order to run more efficiently. Single-leg glute bridges are a great way to strengthen this area. During the exercise, “Ask yourself, ‘What muscles do I feel working?’ Most people will feel it in their lower back, or their hamstring will cramp,” says Dicharry, which isn’t good. “You want to learn how to move and drive from your hips to lift and stabilize the pelvis. If you’re having trouble isolating your glutes, Dicharry suggests imagining that you are squeezing a quarter between your butt cheeks as you raise your hips off the floor. “It seems like a simple exercise, but if you can’t master the basic bridge, you’re going to do everything else incorrectly,” says Dicharry. Add in clam shells, hip hikes and lateral leg raises and you’ll be on your way to building a strong bum. RELATED: 6 Butt Exercises Every Runner Should Be Doing
3. Improve Your Posture
Your mother was right: Good posture does matter. According to Dicharry, balance, alignment and posture all directly impact our running ability and form. “Most of us stand back on our heels and lock out our knees. We just ‘hang out’ in our posture,” says Dicharry. “When you stand like this all day, you’ll start to run like this, too. And, poor posture can inhibit your hip strength by half.” In order to stand up tall, you first need to find a neutral position in your spine. Stand and become aware of where the weight is in your feet. “Then, drop your breastbone and the front of your ribs down and you should feel the weight shift off your heels to the other parts of your feet,” says Dicharry. “Most people will feel like their muscles must work to maintain this position.” Practice proper posture all day — when standing, sitting, walking and running — so that it becomes second nature and you can maintain this position even during a hard workout. Muir also suggests doing drills to help you concentrate on your form, which translates to more efficient and faster running. Muir’s favorites include high knees, butt kicks and side shuffles. RELATED: 6 Exercises That'll Seriously Improve Your Posture [caption id="attachment_63916" align="alignnone" width="620"] Photo: Pond5[/caption]
4. Build a Strong Core
Having a sturdy center helps improve stabilization and allows your lower body and upper body to communicate more effectively. “The runners I’ve trained who have focused on this have performed much better,” says Cheri Paige Fogleman, trainer for Daily Burn 365. “A strong core gives runners an advantage in that your form doesn’t break down when you get tired.” Fitzgerald’s “bread and butter” core workout includes everything from planks and side planks to modified bicycles and bird-dog exercises. He recommends doing a routine like this two to three times a week. RELATED: 6 Core Exercises to Make You a Stronger, Faster Runner
5. Practice Toe Yoga
Your feet play an important role in running. Not only do they absorb the impact upon landing, they also help generate the force required to propel you forward when you run. Yet, according to Dicharry, many runners have weak feet and poor foot coordination. How can you make your feet more resilient? Practice toe yoga! What exactly is toe yoga? It’s learning how to move your big toe and little piggies independently of each other. Keeping the ball of your foot on the ground, lift up just your big toe while your little toes remain on the floor and hold. Then, drive your big toe down into the ground while you lift up your little toes and hold. “One of the most helpful things to do is to learn how to use your big toe,” Dicharry says. “Being able to drive your big toe down is a critical skill. You’re isolating the muscle in the arch of your foot. Its only job is to stabilize the arch.” RELATED: How to Score Perfect Running Form Like the Pros
6. Try Something New
Aqua jogging, stair mill, spin class… “There are so many other modalities that can support running,” says Fogleman. If you’re not training for a race, it’s a great time to switch things up. “The more things you do that are different, the better athlete you become,” says Dicharry. If some form of cross-training isn’t already in your weekly routine, mix in your favorite low-impact activity (or try something new!). Just one hour a week can pay dividends come spring.
7. Hit the ‘Mill!
Don’t want to run outside? No problem. Try the treadmill hill workout, featured below, from CLAY Health Club + Spa. It will build glute and leg strength as well as increase fast-twitch muscle fibers. The result: You're able to run farther, better, faster and stronger. RELATED: 20-Minute HIIT Treadmill Workout to Get Fit, Fast
Your Winter Treadmill Workout
Before you start, you’ll need to determine your speed and incline for the workout. Find your goal pace-per-mile for the desired incline — six percent for this workout — and corresponding treadmill mph setting. After you finish your warm-up, step off the treadmill belt and bring your speed up to your hill sprint speed and your desired incline. Step back onto the belt to begin your hill intervals. Candle Magick
Lit candles help create a mystical and magickal atmosphere during a ritual. They bring the element of Fire, and can be used to release or initiate something. The flame, of course, can also be used to ignite incense or burn materials. The light of a candle can also serve as a beacon for invited spirits. However, the colour of a candle will have an effect on what type of energy it brings to the ritual, and thus some colours are better for particular kinds of spells. Below is a list of candle correspondences by colour, where you can choose which one(s) feels most appropriate for each situation, spell and ritual. (If you don’t have the right candle, using a white candle will generally cover your needs – since white contains all colours – but it helps if you visualise the desired colour throughout the ritual.) You can also carve symbols, runes, initials and more into the candle – things that represent the result you wish to achieve.
(Note – for the candle to have the most effective and focused energy, remember to cleanse, consecrate and charge it. There is a section detailing these steps in The Essence of Magick.)
Candle colours
White contains all colours. It symbolises purity and innocence, and the Maiden aspect of the Triple Goddess. Use for purification, peace, healing, truth and sincerity, cleansing, spirituality, clarity, wholeness and joy. It can also protect, repel negative energy, relieve tension and aid in meditation.
Yellow is the realm of intellect, inspiration and creativity. Use for confidence and charm, persuasion, wisdom, mental strength, concentration, communication, memory, logic and learning. It stimulates your personal power and self-esteem, and promotes cheerfulness and an optimistic outlook. Use it to invoke or represent the element of Air.
Orange is energising and promotes stimulation, joy and success. Use for good fortune, prosperity, power, action, energy building, and courage. Aids in legal matters, achieving goals, cleansing negative attitudes and bringing in happiness and enthusiasm. Also used for attracting friends and inspires emotional healing.
Pink represents all variations of love – friendly, romantic, spiritual, and universal. Use for love magick, compassion, forgiveness, joy, harmony, sensitivity, emotional and spiritual healing, and self-love. Promotes spiritual awakening and opening of the heart.
Red is the colour of fire and passion. It represents activity and action, blood, love, sex, fertility, potency, power, vitality, and courage. It instils energy and strength and can thus be used for health, vigour and defence. It also symbolises the Mother aspect of the Triple Goddess. Use it to invoke or represent the element of Fire.
Purple is a highly spiritual colour and is associated with psychic abilities, spiritual awakening, and ancient wisdom. It is the colour of the third eye chakra where your psychic vision and inner eye reside, so purple can be used to open your third eye in order to invite visions and enhance intuition. Use also for spiritual protection, healing, respect, honour, wisdom, purification, sensitivity, progress, spiritual growth and dissociating from the ego. Meditate regularly with a purple candle to reduce stress or insomnia.
Magenta is used to facilitate quick changes and fast results in spell work. Burn with another candle to increase the energy of that candle’s purpose and intent. Also used for exorcism and spiritual healing.
Blue is a soothing colour and is connected to spirituality, inner peace, and harmony. Promotes wisdom, truth, tranquillity, rest, healing, serenity, patience and kindness. Burned for dream magick and prophetic dreams. Encourages loyalty, understanding, and a peaceful home. Use it to invoke or represent the element of Water. Meditate with a blue candle to help focus your mind.
Turquoise is used for stress relief, focus and intellect. Aids in storing knowledge, improving memory, and finding logic in any situation.
Green is associated with nature, growth, and fertility, and is a symbol of the Goddess and her green earth. It is also a colour often linked to money and financial success. Use for luck and prosperity, abundance and generosity, earth magick, physical and emotional healing, rejuvenation, and renewal. Assists agriculture to encourage a good harvest. Use it to invoke or represent the element of Earth.
Brown is the colour of earth, and holds a grounded, balanced vibration. Assists in clear thinking and decision-making. Promotes concentration, intuition, material gain, wealth, common sense, and stability. Also encourages intuition and telepathic abilities. It is said to help locate lost objects. Also used to protect and heal animals.
Silver (or grey) is a neutral colour and can be used to deflect and neutralise negative influences. It brings protection against otherworldly entities, stabilises energies, and promotes inner peace and serenity. Also a symbol of the Goddess, and can be used to invoke any female deity.
Gold is associated with the God and solar deities. It is believed to attract the powers of cosmic influences. Encourages success, wealth, communication, persuasion, victory, masculine energy, and confidence. Use when invoking any male deity.
Black absorbs all colours, and is often used to absorb or banish negativity. It reverses curses and hexes. Use for protection, banishing, repelling black magick, and ridding of bad habits. It enhances inner strength, resilience and self-control, and can be used in meditation to delve deeper into the unconscious. Also burned for powerful healing and support through loss and grief. Represents the Crone aspect of the Triple Goddess. (INFORMATION FROM

La Famille Lafay
La Propriété de Lafay
The Lafay estate is as sharply divided as is the current owning family, an unforunate consequence of the split attention lavished onto it. The sprawling manor home is itself a dim and dark place, sumputously furnished, with the large window drapes seldom drawn and heaving tapestries, lavish rugs, and dark paintings decorating its interior. It is a thick and oppressive space, though every inch of it is in technical good taste. It is a refined space of honor and history and very much beholden to old customs--the domain of the Marquis, who watches over all from within. Despite the few rooms offering reprieve (the sitting parlor and a few bedchambers among them), the space is far from an easy one.
And yet the grounds of the estate are quite charming, bright, and well-kept. The garden and orchard are in good order, the plants are healthy and lively--spritely, even, invested with the very essence of bonne vie itself come spring--the lawn well-manicured and the trees all neatly cut and shaped. This is perhaps because the world outside of the manor was one cherished by its youngest occupants, the Lafay children, and is now kept up by gardners and caretakers of their choosing. Many a pleasant afternoon can be spent out of doors on the estate’s sprawling gardens, if the manor’s interior can be stomached for long enough to pass through it to the gardens.
Philipe Lafay The Marquis de Lafay
A hard and universally intolerable old man, the Marquis’ health has long been failing him; alongside his now-ailing strength and inability to sleep, the Marquis has developed a rattling cough. Those close to him both fear and hope it will be his undoing.
If there was a time when the Marquis was not so cold and distant as he is now, it is in the far past, perhaps reaching even into ancient history. For all his adult children’s lives, he has never been anything but cold, reserved, distant, strict. More concerned with ettiquette and appearance than warmth of feeling or sincerity to self, the Marquis has ruled his family with an iron fist, seeing to it that they get the finest of education, present themselves only in the best of fashions (postures, speeches, attire, decorum), and always at the price of their mental, emotional, and sometimes physical stability.
In spite of harsh words and harsher ways, the Marquis has managed to keep his family alive, well, and out of debt, often at the expensive of a disowned or disinheirted relative or two. At present, his son-in-law Gabriel Allard and his children stand as the heirs of the Lafay estate and fortune.
Sabine Lafay The Marquise de Lafay
The Marquise is a lady difficult both to like and dislike. She is tepid and waifish, seemingly always either lackadaisal, lackluster, lacking in energy, or all three. A thin woman, she is often mistaken for being quite sickly--and sometimes she even is. While she can amuse, when she so chooses, with her rather lukewarm wit, she keeps mostly to herself. She takes no stand for or against her husband, her children, or even her own person. She is as removed as her husband, yet is not nearly so aloof: only distant.
As may be surmised, she is hardly a presence--noticed or missed--in the lives of those around her.
Adelaide Allard The Countess de Allard, former Countess de Lafay
The eldest of the four (known) Lafay children, Adelaide is a laughing, vivacious presence, known and loved by many--herself included. Although vain and self-involved, she is never intentionally cruel; thoughtless and sometimes unkind, but never cruel. She is a radiant woman with a personality to match, all shimmering laughter and bouncing curls, bright eyes and fluttering eyelashes. A flirt and a coquette, Adelaide is not above toeing the line of propriety, particularly at large social gatherings like parties, operas, symphonies, and social dinners.
Until the time when she met her husband, Count Gabriel Allard, Adelaide’s younger brother was the apple of her eye. She doted upon him as one might a favored pet, dressing him and giving him lessons in literature far above his then-tutelage, showing him the art of dancing, hapischord, and even of her needlework (which was good, but far from elegant). Adelaide was courted, wooed, and married in short order, despite her coquettish ways, and has since been happily the Countess de Allard. She seldom visits the family or the estate again, and always at either the cajoling of her husband or out of guilt and sympathy for her younger siblings.
Robine Lafay The Countess de Lafay
The only younger sister her brother ever knew in person, Robine was griefstricken at his disownment and subsequent absence from her life. A small girl, both in stature and in size, Robine takes the whole of the world onto her thin shoulders. She is by far the most level-headed of the Lafay children, excelling in mathematics and music especially. After her brother’s excommunication from the family and the birth of Cecelia, and lacking her elder sister’s guidance, Robine acted as the best sister she knew how to, withstanding the worst of her father’s ire in Cecelia’s place. She is protective and loving, kind and well-spoken, charming and sincere, with a smile to make the flowers grow and a voice to make the boulders weep.
She is also the most diligent in her work, from her childhood studies to her painting, needlework, music, and correspondence. She kept in the most constant contact with her brother, and as a result was the most hurt when her father (unbeknownst to her) blocked their communication--when her brother, in short, stopped replying. Robine is now of a suitably marriagable age and will do whatever is in the family’s best wishes, even if it is not in her own, or her heart’s. She straddles a fine balance between dreaming optimism (especially in her high hopes for compassion and the human spirit) and concrete realism (especially in her future prospects).
Cecelia Lafay The Countess de Lafay
The youngest of all the Lafay, known and otherwise, Cecelia is a wild and puckish spirit, with all the force of her sisters’ charms and a hard determination all her own. She is a force to be reckoned with; strong-willed and stubborn, she has all of the Marquis’ steely impetuousness and none of the graces of his station. A wild and exuberant girl, chatty and warm-hearted, Cecelia would sooner follow in her brother’s footsteps than those of her mother, either sister, or even her father. She hopes to explore the world someday and has yet to realize that she can hardly do so without some proficiency in math...or reading...or languages...or music, or needlepoint, or any of the other things which currently bore her.
There is a rumor, as vicious as it is scandalous, that Cecelia is in truth as in spirit more her sister’s daughter than her mother’s. Robine has gone to great lengths to be more of a mother to the girl than the Marquise--yet it seems doubtful that dark-haired, dark-eyed Robine could have given birth to so light and fair a child.

CANDLE MAGIC
One of the easiest of the natural magic arts is candle burning. It is simple because it employs little ritual and few ceremonial artifacts. The items nescessary for candle magic can be purchased at any department store and the rituals can be practiced in any room. Most of us have performed our first candle magic as children. Blowing out the candles on our birthday cake and making a wish is magic. This custom is based on the three magical principals of concentration, will power and visualization. The child who wants his wish to come true has to concentrate (blow out the candles), visualize the end result (make a wish) and hope that it will come true (will power). The size and shape of the candles you use is not important. However, highly decorative, extra large, or unusually shaped candles may cause distractions and an inability to concentrate on the work at hand. Most prefer to use candles of standard or uniform size. Candles sold in different colors for domestic use are ideal. The candles should be previously unused. The reason for this being, vibrations picked up by secondhand materials or equipment may disturb your magical workings and negate their effectiveness. Some prefer to make their own candles for ritual and magical use. This is practical, because not only does it bestow upon the candle your own personal vibrations, the mere act of making your own candle is magically potent. Candle wax and molds, together with wicks, perfumes, and other equipment; can be purchased at some department stores. The wax is heated until liquid and then poured into the mold through which a suitably sized wick has already been threaded. The wax is then left to cool and the mold is removed, leaving a perfectly formed candle. Special oil-soluble dyes and perfumes can be added to the wax before the cooling process is complete to provide suitable colors and scents for a particular magical ritual. Stores, which sell candle-making supplies, may also provide do-it-yourself books explaining candle making to the beginner. Once you have purchased or made your ritual candle it has to be oiled or 'dressed' before burning. Dressing the candle establishes a psychic link between you and the candle through a sensory experience. By physically touching the candle during the dressing procedure, you are charging it with our own personal vibrations and also concentrating the desire of your magical act into the wax. The candle becomes an extension of your mental power and life energy. When you dress a candle for magical use, imagine that it is a psychic magnet containing both a North and a South Pole. Rub the oil into the candle beginning at the top and work downward to the halfway point. Always brush in the same direction downward. This process is then repeated by beginning at the bottom and working up to the middle. The best type of oils to use for dressing candles is natural. Some occult suppliers will provide candle magic oils with exotic names. If you do not wish to use these, you can select oils or perfumes from your own sources. Virgin Olive Oil is suitable for this purpose. Oil soluble perfumes, sold by craft shops for scenting candles, may also be used. The candles you use can be chosen in accordance with the magical properties of color. The simplest form of candle magic is to write down the object of your working on an unused piece of paper. You can use colored paper, which matches the candle. Write your petition on the paper, and as you write down what you want to accomplish through candle magic-- a new job, healing for a friend, a change of residence, a new love affair, etc.-- visualize your it coming true. Visualize the circumstances under which you might be offered a new job, imagine your employer telling you that your salary has been increased or conjure up a vision of your perfect love partner. When you have completed this, carefully fold up the paper in a deliberately slow fashion. Place the end of the folded paper in the candle flame and set light to it. As you do this concentrate once more on what you desire. When you have completed your ritual, allow the candle to have completely burned away. You do not need to stay with the candle after the ritual, but make sure that is in a safe, heat resistant holder where the hot wax will not cause damage or fire. Never re-use a candle, which has been lit in any magical ritual. It should only be used in that ritual and then allowed to burn away or returned to the Earth (buried) afterwards. If you are conducting a magical ritual, which involves two people (such as a healing for a person some distance away), then the second person can be symbolically represented during the ritual by another candle. All you need to do is find out the subject's birth date and burn the appropriate candle for that zodiacal sign. These are as follows:

Cord Spinning (Working Towards Patching Holes in the Veil)
A Durational Performance by Goo-Witch (Shelby Burchett) and Robin Kosel for Flesh Crisis at The Drugstore, Curated by Jessica Borusky
The Veil is the barrier between this world and other non-physical planes- worlds of spirits, magical beasts, alternate realities. The past year has brought on extremely negative, surreal, chaotic, and otherworldly experiences for many people. Many practitioners of the magic community attribute the events of the recent past to the 'thinning' or total collapsing of the Veil. The Goo-Witch seeks to provide a platform of communal power and unified identity through creating small spells via 'cord magic’.Cord magic is a very old form of magic that is often overlooked. In traditional cord magic, Cords are braided together while concentrating on a desired end. The Goo-Witch will continuously spin cord throughout the evening while focusing her intent on positive and radical change, inclusion, and feminine power. Viewers will be encouraged to add to the community cord that the Goo-Witch spins by choosing materials from the space that represent their own magical intent for the year to come and adding it into the spun wool. The spinning of the magical cord will be a continuous performance throughout the year- collecting as much positive and powerful energy from others to begin to patch the Veil and protect those who have felt the effects of it's thinning.Magical elements to add into the wool: Cascarilla: spiritual projection and shielding, invocation Lavender: cleansing, happiness, healing, good luck, meditation, stability Bay leaves: warding off evil, stopping unwanted interference, anti-jinx Onion: prosperity, endurance, protection, banishing, ending bad habits, dispel anger in others Geranium: love, acceptance, bringing balance, release anxiety, combats depression Rosemary: healing, protection, purification, strength, stress relief Clove: protection, exorcism, love, money Lemon Grass: anti-enemy, ant-jinx Sage: cleansing, healing, money, prosperityColor Correspondance: White: Safety, protection, transformation, enlightenment, connection to higher self Black: creation, rebirth, absorbing energies, patience, binding, stability, neutralizing forces Brown: Security, friendship, animal magic, endurance, grounding, strengthening, solidifying Blue: Increase wisdom, wealth, joy, opportunity, patience, peace, truth, loyalty, meditation Orange: relieving depression, increasing opportunities, mental alertness, breaking down barriers Shots by Jason Zeh

Leo-Virgo note #02
Leo/Virgo Cusp: Individuals born on the cusp of Leo (the fifth Sign of the Zodiac) and Virgo (the sixth Sign of the Zodiac) are ruled by both the Sun and the Planet Mercury. The attributes of these two combined Signs result in a good-natured disposition and natives who are inclined to take life easy, being well-satisfied with both themselves and their station in life. These cuspians make for good neighbors who would never dream of meddling in the affairs of others. Usually highly intelligent, Leo/Virgo subjects are methodical and inclined to be hard-workers. Indeed, this particular cusp combination has produced some exceedingly successful physicians and teachers. The Leo/Virgo cusp combination, also known as the Cusp of Exposure, corresponds symbolically to the period of human life at around the age of thirty-five. Here, there is an interesting blend of the introvert and the extrovert...a mix of the practical and earthy qualities afforded by Virgo coupled with the more intuitive and fiery traits of Leo. The end result is often a quietly inspired individual who keeps his or her light within. Some of these cuspians emit a muted or even nondescript first impression which often conceals a far more flamboyant tendency. Others come across as exhibitionists, but are really sensitive and private individuals. There is a tendency here to hide certain personal qualities or facts...possibly for years. Nevertheless, the inner flamboyance is apt to emerge periodically in even the most introverted of these cuspians and during such occasions, they will reveal themselves to the world, totally aware of what they are doing. Many Leo/Virgo natives eventually come to realize that self-concealment is futile since the more they attempt to hide, the more those around them appear to be taking notice of what they are are (or are not) doing. By aiming to be more transparent and allowing others to see what they truly are instead of going into hiding, these cuspians may well be able to even out their swings between introverted and extroverted behavior. Leo/Virgo natives born into unremarkable surroundings...or at the bottom of the social ladder...can sometimes be late starters in the struggle to move up in the world. Even when such ascension is initiated, it is only through tremendous tenacity and willpower that they can maintain momentum. Indeed, it is not unusual for these cuspians to succumb to their worst fear...a life of boredom and mediocrity. The belief of Leo/Virgo subjects in themselves is frequently inversely proportionate to the belief of the world in general regarding these individuals. In short, as soon as they begin to gain self-confidence, it seems as though others begin to take less notice of them and while applause is not crucial to these cuspians, they do possess a burning sense of their own worth no matter how quiet or self-contained they may be. It is characteristic of these individuals not to reveal the truth about themselves or make grand displays of their real inner feelings until they attain their goals, whether such goals be social or professional. Indeed, it may well be that this desire to divulge can be the fuel which powers the drive toward a goal, since those who reach the top and have carried lifelong secrets are prone to be found out...and usually through their own statements and behavior. To some, this tendency is perceived as a peculiar blend of narcissism and masochism...a strange mixture of self-indulgence and punishment. In truth, these natives are a rather curious blend of intoverted and extroverted tendencies...modesty coupled with flamboyance, for example...and a capacity to see both the large and small picture in almost every situation. Thus, they are often outstanding observers and judges of character. They know how to watch in silence without drawing attention to themselves. In addition, they frequently excel at recording their impressions in thought or word and then expressing them at a later date after long periods of rethinking. Associates and co-workers are likely to depend upon the judgment, objectivity and brilliant memory of these natives and when they are able to achieve emotional stability, Leo/Virgo subjects can be the most dependable and reliable of friends. It should be noted that there is a danger here for Leo/Virgo cuspians to alternately use concealment and revelation as a weapon or ploy to get their own way and they need to realize the childishness and non-productivity of such games. The solution to this often comes when they meet just one person...or a very few...who are willing to accept them exactly as they are. Thus, through acceptance, love and trust, these cuspians can eliminate the need to play "hide-and-seek." Unfortunately, emotional immaturity is apt to plague Leo/Virgo natives until they fully accept the challenges associated with attaining adulthood. Subjects of this cusp combination are never altogether happy or content with less than the very best and finest of furnishings for their homes and this love of nice things is also likely to extend to their choice of wearing apparel. In short, these natives are extremely fond of elaborate displays in dressing and, at times, may well carry this fondness to undesirable extremes. Leo/Virgo cuspians possess the vitality and ambition to be successful in their endeavors and are industrious and efficient when working for a good cause. In addition, they are are practical, logical and immensely creative. They are also gregarious and social, being fun-loving souls who live life with much enthusiasm. The natural leadership found in many of these subjects, coupled with their administrative prowess, helps to ensure that any project undertaken will be successful. These are people who are very good at understanding the deeper meaning of what others say. They rely on logic rather than emotion in making decisions and are reliable and diligent individuals. However, they can sometimes appear "picky" or overly critical toward those who are not as discriminating. Being decisive and direct, the Leo/Virgo cuspian is optimistic regarding personal successes. They do have a tendency to exaggerate problems and overreact to stumbling blocks, but are generally positive people with an inherent pride and streak of stubborness which keeps them from giving up. These individuals have the ability to analyze and then take appropriate action. They are selective and discriminating, but are constantly and quickly moving. The personality of these cuspians is warm-hearted and outgoing. They are cheerful, self-assured, studious and sensible in business dealings. It should also be noted that the female Leo/Virgo native in particular is likely to be easily convinced by arguments set forth in a plausible and persuasive manner. In this combination, the exuberance afforded by the Sun (planetary ruler of Leo) combines with the quickness that Mercury (planetary ruler of Virgo) applies to the analytical ability of the Virgo make-up. The result is an individual blessed with an intuitive nature wherein the Sun brings out the favorable aspect of Mercury, while the inherent Virgo harmony counteracts the chief weakness of Leo natives...indolence. Here, the Virgo curiosity is tempered by the sympathy of Leo, making for individuals who are open and above-board in their dealings. However, these cuspians can suffer through their own self-importance. The more the good points of these subjects, then the quicker they are to recognize such through their ability for self-analysis. Thus, the egotism of the Leo/Virgo native is apt to swell proportionately and the fact that such is justified only makes it worse for them if it rouses the animosity and jealousy of others. Leo/Virgo cuspians tend to be good actors, writers and lawyers, but less likely to excel in the field of medicine (a traditionally favorable Leo career) due to the over-sympathy of their highly imaginative minds. However, these individuals will meet with success in the business world and possess great executive prospects since they are sufficiently forceful to command interest and respect. In short, they apply a methodical attention to detail and adhere to a practical and well-organized routine. Leo/Virgo cuspians are good organizers and tend to be quite popular people who are even inspiring at times. The closer an individual is to the Leo side of this cusp, then the more basic will be the Leo traits, with the influence of Virgo turning such traits toward a practical application not usually found in the basic Leo nature. However, as this cusp moves toward the Virgo side, the inherent Virgo characteristics rapidly takes over, although good nature will persist and produce willing workers. Although skeptical of extravagent claims and promises, some Leo/Virgo subjects are prone to fall victim to gambling and may well be brash and extravagant at the gaming table. They also tend to be rather health-conscious and may be quite concerned with diet and hygiene. However, this interest in health usually ensures that these cuspians take good care of their mental and physical selves. In their leisure time, Leo/Virgo individuals prefer to play in groups rather than going solo. It is less important to them that the exercise be interesting, so long as it is effective and social, and their perfectionism coupled with physical strength will make these cuspians strive to excel in whatever sport they choose. Within this cusp combination is found the passion and fire of Leo absorbed by the earthiness of Virgo and thus, turned to generative uses. These subjects are in great sympathy with nature. In short, they are "children of the soil" and adore the sun and fresh air. These are cuspians who are at their best mentally and physically when they can live an outdoor life. They are fond of outdoor exercise and outdoor pleasures, finding considerable enjoyment in the care of lawns, plants and gardens, etc. In terms of ailments, Leo/Virgo cuspians are most susceptible to disorders of the stomach and circulatory system. With regard to relationships, Leo/Virgo cuspians are devoted but can, on occasion, be rather jealous souls. However, they are not particularly flirtatious. The greatest strength of Leo/Virgo cuspians is probably to be found in their creativity, attention to detail and inherent desire to be of service. They will pick up on the "little things" that others most likely miss, and thoughtful gifts or unique solutions to problems are second nature to those who fall under the influence of this cusp combination. In addition, the committment of these natives to help others makes them one of the most giving characters to be found in the Zodiac. The most important lesson to be learned by Leo/Virgo natives is to curb the desire for display and smug self-satisfaction. As with all cusp individuals, these cuspians tend to be attracted to others born on the cusp...particularly those who fall within the Pisces/Aries and Taurus/Gemini combinations. Overview: -- Possess the fiery, energetic and aggresive traits inherent in Leo -- -- Possess the rational and meticulous traits inherent in Virgo -- -- Tend to be highly secretive -- -- Able to accurately determine the right time to do something -- -- Experts at the art of effect -- -- More discriminating than most individuals -- -- Less overtly sensual than most individuals -- -- Reluctant to allow others to share in personal feelings --

These ancient symbolic seals may hold the key to deepening your connection to your yoga practice.
We often see statues of ancient yogis, gods, and goddesses sitting in meditation and holding their hands in certain positions. Or we may go into a yoga class in which the teacher encourages us to sit in silence with our hands perched on our knees, index fingers touching thumbs, and wonder: What do these hand gestures have to do with meditation? Turns out, quite a bit.
Hasta Mudras—literally meaning seals, stamps, or gestures—are sacred hand movements that have been used for thousands of years in many different traditions as a way of deepening one’s practice and awakening the power of the Divine. Today, Hasta Mudras continue to be important tools to free up energy (prana) and direct it to areas of the body that need healing. Every mudra has a particular purpose and moves the energy in a specific way throughout the body to create subtle physical, mental, and emotional changes. For example, if you come into your meditation practice feeling agitated or anxious, placing your palms face down on your thighs will usually calm and ground your energy. If you feel sluggish or sleepy, a palms-up mudra might enliven you.
Nubia Teixeira, founder of the Bhakti Nova School of Yoga and Dance, says that our hands are an extension of our hearts and connect our innermost thoughts and prayers to the outside world: “They are how we reach out, touch, express, heal, work, cultivate, cook, paint, write, play music, and hold one another,” she writes in her book Yoga and the Art of Mudras. So it makes sense that Hasta Mudras can help you positively direct your thoughts and actions to bring beauty into your life and the world around you. Mudras can help you “evoke the presence of a great goddess within you so she can empower you physically, allowing you to feel her force and echo her voice. With this personal experience imprinted in your heart, you can then be empowered to be your strong, true self,” Teixeira writes.
Yoga, as well as Buddhism and other spiritual traditions, teaches that all reality is made up of five elements collectively known as tattvas—earth, air, fire, water, and space (or ether)—and that the relationship among them informs how all cosmic life unfolds. It’s a divine composition at play—or, in the case of imbalance, at war—within each of us. Mudras are a valuable tool to create harmony among the internal tattvas and help you focus in on whatever aspect of your life feels challenging.
According to Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, each finger on either hand connects to and balances a different tattva. So when you assume a mudra, your fingertips create an energetic circuit that simultaneously connects and stimulates the elements associated with those tattvas that you wish to activate. The thumb, which corresponds to fire, offers the warmth of the breath. When the index finger (which is linked to the air element) touches the thumb, it enhances the movement of the breath throughout the body; the middle finger (space or ether) and the thumb together increase spaciousness; the ring finger (earth)-thumb connection (also called Mother Earth Mudra) brings a sense of stability; and finally, the pinky finger (water) joining with the thumb can improve circulation.
Then Teixeira offers a practice that invites you to explore how these hand gestures can change your experience of yoga asana, get the prana flowing, and perhaps awaken a deeper sense of self-awareness. Teixeira begins with a simple ritual, the Lotus Flower Offering, which is a salutation to akasha (ether), the most subtle of elements. Invoking ether with this mudra and reciting the accompanying prayer while sitting in Half Lotus allows you to open space for the other elements to creatively expand.
LOTUS FLOWER OFFERING
LOTUS FLOWER OFFERING
Sit in Ardha Padmasana (Half Lotus Pose) either on the floor or with hips elevated on a blanket. Cross your right leg in front of your hips, placing the top of your left foot on your upper right thigh. Place your right foot under your left knee, switching sides on different days—sometimes with the right foot on top and other times the left.
This mudra, Alapadma, represents the offering of a fully bloomed lotus flower, or poola. Open your hands wide, and then gently curve your fingers to create a round shape like the petals of a lotus flower.
LOTUS FLOWER OFFERING
Silently offer the following prayer: “With gratitude in my heart for the blessing of becoming and for the certainty of returning, I take refuge on your ethereal lap, oh Mother, and I ask you to please whisper your messages to me and allow me to foresee what you want me to manifest.”
KAPITTHA AND SUCHI MUDRAS
SARASVATI BIJASANA (STANDING) WITH KAPITTHA AND SUCHI MUDRAS
The mood for this pose is sweetness. It represents Sarasvati Devi, the riverine goddess of knowledge, music, and art, bringing her waters of inspiration to cool the pain of separation.
Mudras
Begin with both hands in loose fists. With your left hand, form Kapittha Mudra by resting your thumb gently against the tip of your index finger. This pose represents Sarasvati Devi holding the top of her celestial instrument, the veena. Use your right hand to form Suchi Mudra with index finger pointing straight out and thumb relaxing on top of the middle finger, suggesting Sarasvati Devi plucking the veena strings.
Asana
Stand tall with your feet slightly turned out. While bending your knees, transfer your weight to your left foot and cross your right knee behind your left. Look over to your left side, pointing your right foot to the sky while sitting a little deeper into your hips. Hide your right knee behind your left as you move your hips a few inches to the left. Now add the position of your arms and hands: Your left hand should be aligned with your forehead, with the tip of your index finger pointing toward you. Your right hand will hover in the air, in line with your right hip. Point your index finger toward the center of your body.
SARASVATI BIJASANA (STANDING) WITH KAPITTHA AND SUCHI MUDRAS
Prayer
“May I flow on your riverine streams of inspiration, held by your hands of wisdom, and become capable of appreciating your art.”
SIMHAMUKHA AND SUKACHANCHU MUDRAS
SARASVATI BIJASANA (SEATED) WITH SIMHAMUKHA AND SUKACHANCHU MUDRAS
Mudras
In this pose, the goddess is holding her veena with slightly different hand positions. The left hand forms Simhamukha Mudra, the lion’s-face gesture, with the thumb and little finger pointing up. Meanwhile, the index, middle, and ring fingers point toward the face. The right hand is in Sukachanchu Mudra with all fingers circled like a wheel—the thumb and middle fingers touching.
Asana
Standing while holding your mudras, cross your right foot in front of your left, leaving 12 inches between the feet. Bend your knees, and sit on your left heel or foot as you bring your left knee to the floor. Cross your right leg on top of the left. Repeat on the other side.

Prayer
“I meditate upon you, Sarasvati Devi; your light awakens my intellect, your beauty awakens my heart; your voice transports me into the divine reality.”
This pose represents Sarasvati Devi soothing our souls with her music. It lullabies us into remembrance and reunion.
UTTHITA HASTA PADASANA WITH BHRAMARA MUDRA
Bhramari Devi is the goddess of the bees. This pose calls upon her strength and power.
Mudra
Take the nail of your index finger to the base of your thumb. Connect the tip of your middle finger to the tip of your thumb, stretching out the ring and little fingers for Bhramara, the bee mudra. The high vibration of a bee, its sounds, and its effects on our environment mean that this hand gesture is associated with the crown chakra and higher realms.
Asana
Stand with weight evenly distributed between both feet, and engage Bhramara Mudra in your left hand, keeping your arm relaxed. Lift your right foot (option to use a belt for support), then stretch your right leg out to the side. Keep your hips even and down as you lift your leg and find your balance. Then lift your bee hand gesture above your head, and shift your gaze to your hand.
Prayer
“Bhramari Devi, may I hear your sweet subtle sounds reverberating upon my crown chakra and clear my mind. May I open my crown chakra and connect with the highest, where I can remember creation and channel creativity.”
ARDHA PATAKA MUDRA
ARDHA PARIGHASANA WITH ARDHA PATAKA MUDRA
This pose symbolizes your ability to bridge differences and distances and links the spiritual to the material.
Mudra
Hold your palms flat, then bend your ring and little fingers inward while extending your index and pointer fingers. This mudra—Ardha Pataka (half flag)—represents the banks of a flowing river upon which we will build our bridge.
Asana
Come into kneeling position, pressing the tops of your feet down. Bend your right knee at a 90-degree angle, then open it to your right side, placing your foot on the earth with your toes pointing to the right. Bring both hands into Ardha Pataka, then rest your right elbow on your right thigh and lift your right hand to heart level. Raise your left arm up above your head, palm down, as you bend deeper to the right. You can look forward or add a slight twist by shifting your gaze to the sky. For a more challenging variation, straighten your right knee, centering your right heel on the earth, and point your toes skyward.
ARDHA PARIGHASANA WITH ARDHA PATAKA MUDRA
Prayer
“May I be a bridge for those who feel separate from you, Divine Mother. May I provide peace to others with my words and comfort to others with my actions.”
PUSHPAPUTA MUDRA
ANJANEYASANA WITH PUSHPAPUTA MUDRA
This pose collects the waters of purification from the spiritual realm to cleanse your eyes and mind.
Mudra
Bring your palms flat with fingers together, then bend your fingers slightly to make the shape of a bowl. Bring the outer edges of both of your hands to touch.
This is a mudra of giving and receiving; it means a “handful of flowers.” As you hold it, imagine that you are inhaling and taking the light into your heart via your hands. As you exhale, offer the light of your heart to the world.
Asana
This pose is named after Hanuman as Anjaneya, the son of Anjani, a beautiful Apsara (celestial dancer). This expression brings a more feminine embellishment to Hanuman’s asana and honors Anjani’s beauty. Kneel, then step your left foot forward, aligning your left knee over your heel. Lower your hips to a Low Lunge while bringing your hands to Pushpaputa Mudra. Slightly bend your back to open your heart to the sky.

ANJANEYASANA WITH PUSHPAPUTA MUDRA
Prayer
“As I inhale, I receive abundance. As I exhale, I give generosity.”
FLOWER MUDRAS
Hastas (hand gestures) that embody flowers can help you close your practice and reflect on the beauty of nature.
A flower is the epitome of creation. It offers itself fully and presents itself openly, which teaches us to share our gifts without restrictions. In the impermanence of life, we can all offer the unique and full authentic expression of our souls to benefit the world.
Tambula Mudra
Tambula Mudra symbolizes seeds sprouting during the spring. Stretch your index finger forward and place your thumb at its side, curling your other three fingers toward the center of your palm.
Pushpa Mudra
Pushpa Mudra represents the blossoming of a flower. Bring your thumb, index, and middle fingers together, curling your ring and pinky fingers toward your palm. Then bloom by opening up your thumb, index, and middle fingers.
Hamsasya Mudra
Hamsasya Mudra mimics picking a flower, either to smell, offer, or place in one’s hair. Connect your index finger with your thumb, then open your other three fingers.
Padma Mudra
Padma Mudra symbolizes a full-blooming lotus flower. Start with your hands in Prayer Mudra. Connect the heels of your palms and sides of your thumbs and pinkies, opening your ring, middle, and index fingers out in the shape of a lotus flower.
