Years ago, I remember reading a blog on slash film 10 years ago about a r rated puppet film called #happytimemurders (that was supposed to Star Cameron Diaz at the time) was in development hell. Finally in 2018, the movie is out and it’s everything I imagined it would be. I love The Muppets and everything Jim Henson have created. I also like R rated comedies that’s done with a different medium (Team America World Police, South Park, Ted 2, Sausage party, etc) and this one fits on the list. Now the film isn’t super hilarious but I love the approach it took for a buddy cop comedy/puppet movie. I hope #HensonAlternative continues to produce content like this. It was a fun experiment. I enjoyed it. Not as much as Who framed Roger Rabbit but it definitely was a good time. I don’t know if it’s worth seeing on the big screen tho. Worth watching on an airplane or streaming it online or rental from a kiosk. It should be fairly obvious that Jim Henson is one of the greatest influences on my life. So, when I found out the Henson Alternative STUFFED & UNSTRUNG show was coming to Austin, you can imagine my excitement. The show was not only hilarious....but technologically astounding. They did a scene using digital puppetry, something Jim himself had worked on and since then the Henson Company has really made breakthroughs. There were over 80 puppets on stage for the performers to choose from. Every puppeteer was at the top of their game. They even performed two classic Henson skits "I've Grown Accustomed to Your Face" (originally performed by Jim & Jane Henson) and "Java" (originally performed by Frank Oz and Jim). Tears in my eyes every time I saw Jim's name on the screen. And as we just lost Jane last week, that skit was particularly meaningful. So wonderful to see Jim's legacy continue on through his work. I cannot thank these talented people enough.
