The Cosquer cave, located near Marseille, France is a submerged cave system, accessible through a 175 m long tunnel situated 37 m under sea level. Discovered in 1985 by diver Henri Cosquer, the cave contains hundreds of engravings and parietal paintings dating from two different paleolithic occupations, one around 27 000 BP and the next around 19 000 BP. During the Paleolithic, sea level was 100 m below the cave entrance and the shore of the Mediterranean was several kilometers south.

Cosquer cave
The Cosquer cave is located near Marseille, France and was rediscovered by accident in 1985 by a scubadiver named Henri Cosquer. As you might have guessed, the cave was named after the discoverer. The entrance of the cave itself lies about 35/37 meters below sealevel which follows a 150 meters long slope up before reaching a huge chamber with perfectly conserved cave art.
Despite the cave being discovered in 1985, the paintings itself were only mentioned in 1991 after a diving disaster that took the lives of three divers in the cave, they died after they got lost.
The discovery of the art inside the cave was quite significant. No other paleolithic art has been discovered before in the region of Marseille and the fact that this cave's entrance is located under water can provide us with an answer. It is very likely that other similar caves in the region have been completely flooded after sea levels rose during the end of the last cold period of our ice age, this same rise of the sealevel also took Doggerland back into the seas.
The big chamber inside the cave consists of several images of animals. A total of 150 pieces of cave art have been discovered, 65 of which are hand stencils and other motifs/symbols. Most of the animals are quite familiar in other prehistoric caves such as bisons, horses and ibexes but this cave features more marine animals than other European sites. The cave is located right next to the sea so it makes sense that the art inside this cave represents more sea life than art inside caves further removed from the sea such as Chauvet.
Radiocarbon dating has dated the art inside this cave in two different time periods, 27,000 years ago and 19,000 years ago. In total, 177 animals are depicted in this cave belonging to eleven different species. There is also a rare depiction of a therianthrope (therian is Greek for wild beast and anthropos is Greek for human, these are half man/half beast beings) a human with a seal's head.
Unfortunately some of the submerged parts of the caves most likely contained cave art as well but these paintings have long disappeared thanks to the salty water and algae. What makes this cave so exceptional is the presence of marine animal paintings and tools to create these paintings such as a shell which still contains coal and a piece of calcite plague which once served as a lamp.
Just like all other cave art found in Europe, the purpose behind these paintings is still unknown (despite several theories existing, I might write about them later). Many of these caves, including the Cosquer cave, are hard to reach places full with danger. Our earliest European ancestors risked their lives creating art in these dark spots underground. What is even more stunning is that several handprints made by children have been discovered as well. This means that children were also exploring these caves but we might never know why.

Today the still existing residence of Petrarch is now a museum and - together with the source grotto impressively described by Petrarch - attracts numerous visitors every year. I don't think that Erich Koehler (who was an excellent Romanist) is of any use here. I only found the name of the author of the work I was looking for in the text. I had a bullfight there as part of a group, but I have to say that I found it disgusting. Then young bullfighters who were still in training were released on the bulls. They were sometimes very clumsy and the whole thing was a tough, quite bloody massacre in which the animals could only be sorry.
Hans Richter. A journey through a century
This shakes the anthropocentric perspective model of the Renaissance. The body, now in free-floating motion, is no longer the fixed point that determines the perception of space. The view from above blurs the surface relief, blurring the mountain and valley. The earth is increasingly changing to a flat surface on which familiar reference points can hardly be identified. It was also a good lesson in the cultural diversity and wealth of humanity, in the dignity and ingenuity of the African spirit, a lesson given in a huge city that was prevented from doing so by the power of history Establish exhibitions on African art. In the event of a collision with the picture hunters, they have the choice of working with them and having their picture taken or not. In the latter case, your reactions range from polite rejection to aggressive resistance. I congratulate Pachulke and Clélia on finding the solution and posting elegant allusions. I meant the city of Antibes, to which an anagram could be Bastien. The Camargue is home to several families of musicians, for example the Reyes and the Baliardo.

After an early sketch that van Gogh had sent to his friend Émile Bernard (JH 1370 in B2), he had started a (probably first) painting, which, however, failed and was only preserved as a fragment. While the nave, tower and facade were built in the Romanesque style, the Gothic choir was only created. Here is Henri Cosquer, professional diver, discoverer of the cave, and official badass. He found a small opening in the underwater cliff face in 1985 and swam into the narrow passageway without any idea of where it would end up, going back several more times before finally reaching the cave a few years later. He got lucky; three other divers died in the passageway while trying to get to the cave in 1991. It's now closed to the public to protect both the art and unwary visitors.
