How to Dress for Making Offerings to Lalla Malika?

Pictured: A real devotee of Lalla Malika. Note the purple djellaba with gold embroidery, the manicured nail, the detailed henna, the numerous pieces of jewellery which includes a ring with a purple stone, and the tiara.

💜 Wear fancy clothes in purple, pink, green, baby blue, multicoloured or with gold embroidery (purple is the most common).

💜 Shoes with embellishments are good too, especially if they're in one of her colours. I have a pair of pink ballet slippers with pearls, black rhinestones and small gold studs that I wear with my dress (a blush pink djellaba with gold embroidery). High heels and embroidered belgha are common.

💜 Female followers wear makeup when giving offerings. She's known for her love of cosmetics so her devotees honour this, applying lipstick, eyeshadow, blush, foundation, mascara, brow pencil, kohl and sometimes lipgloss (it's less for men to wear makeup but occasionally they do).

💜 One description of a female devotee's outfit:

"Iman sat at the center of the sofa, surrounded by cushions. She wore a long, elegant takšiṭa in violet with gold paillettes sewn specifically for the occasion. Her smooth hair fell over her shoulders, revealing long gold-dangling earrings. Her eyelids and lips were tinted in sparkling violet, and her nails were painted the same color. Around her neck was a long gold necklace with a large pendant made from a piece of ʿūd al-qumari — the incense for Malika."

"Iman made her entrance. Adorned in ceremonial attire (crafted a year earlier for this special occasion), a purple tulle veil adorned with sequins covering her face and shoulders, and wearing numerous bracelets and rings, among which stood out a large purple stone, she held a perfume bottle in her hand as she presented herself to the assembly, moving slowly toward the throne."

💜 Male devotees traditionally must be clean shaven, although occasionally you may see one with an extremely well-groomed beard (I can't find much information on this but assumably in some sects beards are allowed as long as they're extremely well maintained).

💜 Both male and female followers style their hair nicely. It doesn't matter if it's long or short, straight or curly, just as long as it's styled. Daughters and sons of Malika often go to the hairdresser before attending gatherings in her honour, but styling your hair by yourself is acceptable.

💜 Jewellery is worn by both males and females. Men often wear gold bracelets, watches and rings, and women go all out - earrings, bracelets, necklaces, chokers, and rings, frequently with purple stones or beads to match their dresses but not always. Any jewellery is fine as long as it's beautiful. Jewellery should always be purified before wearing for the ritual.

💜 Female followers like to wear rings with purple stones, as it's believed Malika wears a purple ring - I have read many accounts of followers saying they dreamt of her visiting them and giving them a ring. This ring must be purified in a specific way before wearing both as part of a ritual outfit and as part of one's daily wear.

💜 Women may also wear accessories like headbands and headscarves in her colours, as well as mdemma (gold or silver belts), embellished hair pins and even tiaras. Men sometimes wear purple scarves around their necks, and tarbouches.

💜 Women get henna done. This is often a part of the ritual itself - at parties in honour of Malika, there will be a henna artist present who draws designs on the ladies' hands. Malika prefers tree-fill over dot fill henna, and intricate artistic styles are strongly associated with her, especially Fassi style henna and delicate floral designs. Men occasionally get henna done too although it's less common.

💜 Women also like to get their nails manicured, often in purple. At a minimum nails should be neat and well shaped.

💜 Both sexes wear perfume and cologne. This can also be part of the ritual, with followers sometimes spraying themselves with perfume as they dance to her rih (a folk song in honour of her). Any perfume is fine, but she especially loves fine colognes, and her favourite scents are oud and sandalwood (several sources say she also likes pure musk, which in Morocco is commonly used as a solid perfume or in the form of attar).

💜 Even assistants at the ritual, despite their roles as mere servants, are required to dress their best: everyone present must honour Lalla Malika with elegance and graceful behaviour, devotee or not.

💜 Before putting on your ritual outfit, it's important to wash thoroughly. One account I read of people preparing for the celebration reads:

"The nails are cut, the unwanted hair is removed. On the face they come applied herbal masks and perfumed oils, the hair is treated with henna and clay. The body is entirely covered with a mixture of henna and water, rubbed with a grain glove thick, wet and rubbed again. This operation, which lasts about half an hour, is carried out with the help of the escorts or, in exchange for a few coins, a body cleaner. This removes all impurities from the skin. The glove is shown and inspected repeatedly with the woman, an operation accompanied by exclamations about how dirty it was with dead skin. Another service that can be requested within the ḥammam is massage, with oils essential, which may be required for pleasant relaxation. Then we proceed to the second phase: the treatment with soap and shampoo. The body is washed first with traditional soap, then with a finer flavored soap. Hair is washed, combed, smoothed. At the end of the bath, the woman goes to the hairdresser and make-up artist before returning to home."

You remember breaking, an awful shattering bolt of not-quite-pain, and then the dark stasis of a sylladex.

You suck in a breath on reflex, and start coughing, rolling onto your side and then off the surface you were lying on, onto something hard and cold like bathroom tile but rougher.

You have a voice. You have a back. You’re coughing. There is cold, hard stone under you, and you can feel it. Your fingers curl against it.

Holy shit. You have a fucking body again.

Dirk, because of course it’s Dirk, pulls you into a sitting position with a grunt—you haven’t had limbs in three goddamn years and they are somewhat protesting their abrupt re-existence—and crouches in front of you. He’s not wearing (you) his shades, so you can see the clear amber of his eyes, the eyes that used to be yours, and the minute furrow of his brow. It’s the way you—he looks when he’s worried, which makes no sense. 

(Your thoughts are moving so much slower than you’re used to.)

“Hey,” he says. 

You opt for the most pertinent question, which is to say “What the fuck?” again. Dirk scratches at his wrist. A nervous habit you remember having once. Grounding pain. (God, your mouth (your mouth!!) still tastes like blood.)

“You broke,” he says. “I did—something, god knows what, it’s probably not replicable, I fucking panicked, but it held you until I could figure out how to fix it, and then I brought you here and waited for the light show.”

Okay, that explanation…raises a lot more fucking questions than it answers. You look down at your body (your body!!), which is draped in pale, trailing green silk. Definitely not the Heart colors that are everywhere on Dirk’s stupid planet.

“You fucking…godtiered me?”

Dirk nods. 

“How?” 

He looks uncomfortable. “Roxy could explain it better than me. Something about unique object classes and external dependencies.”

“You are so fucking bad at answering questions,” you tell him. 

“I didn’t know if it would even work!” he snaps. “I don’t know what you want me to say, dude. The Denizens did something with the game code and here you are, ready to micromanage all of my stupid choices like the insufferable prick you are but with opposable goddamn thumbs this time.”

You look at him. There are dark circles under his eyes, deep purple and unflatteringly pouchy, and his lips are cracked: the intimately familiar signs of a hyperfocus spiral, where you—he doesn’t sleep, and eats or drinks only the bare minimum to keep himself from passing out. His hair is drooping, unstyled and a bit greasy-looking, lank around his ears and neck. 

You reach up to your own hair. Tug a lock down into your peripheral vision. It’s curlier than you remember, and darker. There’s a red tint to it now, not orange like in movies but a true, deep red like in the ads for henna dye that used to pop up on the sidebars of archived forums. You…aren’t sure how you feel about that. (You wonder if your eyes have changed too.)

“This fucking game doesn’t do things for free,” you say. It’s a question, and it isn’t. Dirk looks away and down.

“Don't worry about it,” he says.

What the fuck did he give up for you?

“You hate me,” you say, and hate the way your voice cracks in the middle of it.

Dirk stands up. “Yeah,” he says bluntly. “But you said you were afraid to die.” Like it’s that simple. He holds out his hand to help you up, and after a moment, you take it.

one: by and large i don't think skrael is really a makeup kind of guy. gender yes, presentation no. but he's old, and if not particularly vain (at least in appearance), he stillcalls himself a god; i think he'd probably clean up pretty good, especially if he's trying to look fancy.

two: bellroc however. hot shit. knows it. striking looks, even when they think they're unusually (unsettlingly, unpleasantly) tall. loves adornment of all kinds: clothing, jewelry, makeup.

but what if some of that makeup was a very ancient design? things they remember from beyond a lifetime ago, from a little village that was the biggest city in its world. half trends from their town, half styles they saw from their mother. swaggy eyeliner bc humans is the same. flower-petal drops to fill out their brow, elegant and arching but never quite close enough to meet. safflower tint, just a hint of red on their lip, to complement and heighten the framing brightness of their hair.

other pieces of it, though. they never adopt quite all of what ren wore as a married woman—bellroc, after all, for a very long time would consider themself neither. but parts of it. maybe things ren would have worn at the closest thing to "marriage" she and beril had. a cheeky bit of line, done in henna, visible only by carelessness, just below the bottom of their ribs. (it dips down to their navel—how scandalous!) nails colored with plant dye and then with magic. dimple-marks, to highlight their mouth, and advertise beauty.

Best of 2024 Makeup Here are some of my picks for the best of 2024 Makeup. Buxom Power Line Lip Liners The Buxom Power Line Lip Liners are my favorite lip pencil formula and have been for the past several years. The shade range is very limited, unfortunately, and could certainly use more cool tones. Hush Hush Henna (pinky-brown that is neutral-warm on me), Magnetic Mauve (a my lips but better color, a cool toned pink mauve lilac), Powerful Plum (vampy plum), and Recharged Ruby (cool toned red) are my most used shades. I turn to Nyx and Half-Magic Beauty for the other colors I need in my lip pencils arsenal, such as blue, purple, and black. Does the liner plump my lips? Not that I can tell, but the formula stays put for me and gives me nice, crisp lip lines. I also appreciate the blending brush on the other side of the pencil for when I’m attempting an ombre. LYS Triple Fix Blurring and Hydrating Skin Tint Foundation Stick I’m so grateful to the people who recommended the LYS Triple Fix Blurring and Hydrating Skin Tint Foundation Stick to me! I love stick foundations and I prefer them for daily wear because sticks are fast to apply, much like a pressed powder foundation is for me. There’s been a hole in my makeup collection ever since Milk Makeup Flex Stick was discontinued. I searched for replacements but nothing worked well for me until LYS. What amazes me is that it works best with no primer underneath! So that’s a step I can skip with LYS. Love this! The Best Way to Apply Stick Foundation I’ve found the best way to apply stick foundation for me is not to drag the stick on my face. Instead, I run a brush across the stick, then buff the product into my skin. I use far less product than if I had directly applied the stick to my skin. I use the Anisa Pinnacle Foundation Brush (I won this in a giveaway and would absolutely repurchase) to apply LYS, as well as most of my foundations these days. KVD Lock-It Edge Concealer Brush #40 is what I use around my brows and eyes to blend out my foundation. What About Under Eyes? I’m 46 years old, so the skin under my eyes is delicate and prone to creasing or caking if I don’t delicately apply the thinnest layers of product in that area. I find that the LYS Triple Fix Blurring and Hydrating Skin Tint Foundation Stick works best if I don’t apply it there. Instead, I apply Rare Beauty Positive Light Under Eye Brightener under my eyes to minimize creasing. The Eye Brightener blends into the Stick foundation with no issues. One/Size Attention Seeker 3D Blush Trio The best blush formula that I’ve found all year is the One/Size 3D Blush Trio in Attention Seeker. The cream formula melts into my skin to give me a beautiful, cool toned pink blush. The coordinating powder is great for setting the cream. Attention Seeker blush has gotten me more compliments and questions about what blush I’m wearing than anything else this year. Unfortunately, the entire line leans very warm, so I don’t foresee myself picking up any other shades. The best thing about the One/Size 3D Blush Trio is that it actually has a clear lid to prevent any powder from mixing into the cream section. Normally I don’t buy a mix of cream and powder unless the palette offers that feature. One/Size On Til’ Dawn Setting Spray My pick for the best setting spray of the year is the One/Size On Til’ Dawn Setting Spray. It works in hot, humid Florida and keeps my makeup in place through yoga. It does make me feel like I’m spraying a can of hairspray on my face. My tip is to take a deep breath and then hold it before you spray your face. After you spray your face, use a small fan to help it dry down quickly. While I do still use Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, it’s only with my eyeshadows to help intensify color. It doesn’t irritate my eyes, so it’s perfect for me to use to foil eyeshadows, or create liner with an eyeshadow. VE Cosmetics Innocent Lip Gloss The VE Cosmetics Innocent Lip Gloss (received in PR) is my favorite gloss shade and formula of the year, followed closely by Half-Magic Beauty Magic Drip Glitter Lip Gloss. Innocent wins because it’s an enchanting multichrome gloss that shifts shades of pink, lilac, blue, turquoise, and purple. It looks amazing on top of every color. It’s non sticky, very pigmented, and very long wearing for a gloss. Half-Magic Beauty Magic Drip Glitter Lip Gloss The Half-Magic Beauty Magic Drip Glitter Lip Gloss is a very close second to VE Cosmetics in formula. It’s a very smooth formula with multidimensional sparkle that is not sticky or tacky. It doesn’t migrate around my face onto my teeth or chin. I wear Y2k Cherub (cool pink with multidimensional sparkle), Frosty B*tch (neutral icy peach with multi-colored reflects), and Problem Child (sheer black with multi-colored sparkle). However, it’s a very limited shade range and I would like to see them add a cool-toned red. Y2k Cherub is great for cool-toned makeup looks.  I like Frosty B*tch for neutral to warm leaning looks. Problem Child is perfect for when I want to wear black. Black Moon Cat’s Meow Palette I was sent the Black Moon Cat’s Meow Palette in PR, however I would have purchased this for myself. I did purchase the palette to gift to a friend of mine. You can see my live brush swatches here. It’s an awesome, unique, cool-toned leaning palette. If you like Black Moon’s matte eyeshadow formula and cool tones, you’ll enjoy the Cat’s Meow palette. Final Thoughts I hope you enjoy my winter makeup inspiration and the mini Best of 2024 beauty reviews that I shared. 2024 has been the most challenging year of my life and I’m grateful to be closing the chapter on it. Best of 2024 Makeup Here are some of my picks for the best of 2024 Makeup. Buxom Power Line Lip Liners The Buxom Power Line Lip Liners are my favorite lip pencil formula and have been for the past several years. The shade range is very limited, unfortunately, and could certainly use more cool tones. Hush Hush Henna (pinky-brown that is neutral-warm on me), Magnetic Mauve (a my lips but better color, a cool toned pink mauve lilac), Powerful Plum (vampy plum), and Recharged Ruby (cool toned red) are my most used shades. I turn to Nyx and Half-Magic Beauty for the other colors I need in my lip pencils arsenal, such as blue, purple, and black. Does the liner plump my lips? Not that I can tell, but the formula stays put for me and gives me nice, crisp lip lines. I also appreciate the blending brush on the other side of the pencil for when I’m attempting an ombre. LYS Triple Fix Blurring and Hydrating Skin Tint Foundation Stick I’m so grateful to the people who recommended the LYS Triple Fix Blurring and Hydrating Skin Tint Foundation Stick to me! I love stick foundations and I prefer them for daily wear because sticks are fast to apply, much like a pressed powder foundation is for me. There’s been a hole in my makeup collection ever since Milk Makeup Flex Stick was discontinued. I searched for replacements but nothing worked well for me until LYS. What amazes me is that it works best with no primer underneath! So that’s a step I can skip with LYS. Love this! The Best Way to Apply Stick Foundation I’ve found the best way to apply stick foundation for me is not to drag the stick on my face. Instead, I run a brush across the stick, then buff the product into my skin. I use far less product than if I had directly applied the stick to my skin. I use the Anisa Pinnacle Foundation Brush (I won this in a giveaway and would absolutely repurchase) to apply LYS, as well as most of my foundations these days. KVD Lock-It Edge Concealer Brush #40 is what I use around my brows and eyes to blend out my foundation. What About Under Eyes? I’m 46 years old, so the skin under my eyes is delicate and prone to creasing or caking if I don’t delicately apply the thinnest layers of product in that area. I find that the LYS Triple Fix Blurring and Hydrating Skin Tint Foundation Stick works best if I don’t apply it there. Instead, I apply Rare Beauty Positive Light Under Eye Brightener under my eyes to minimize creasing. The Eye Brightener blends into the Stick foundation with no issues. One/Size Attention Seeker 3D Blush Trio The best blush formula that I’ve found all year is the One/Size 3D Blush Trio in Attention Seeker. The cream formula melts into my skin to give me a beautiful, cool toned pink blush. The coordinating powder is great for setting the cream. Attention Seeker blush has gotten me more compliments and questions about what blush I’m wearing than anything else this year. Unfortunately, the entire line leans very warm, so I don’t foresee myself picking up any other shades. The best thing about the One/Size 3D Blush Trio is that it actually has a clear lid to prevent any powder from mixing into the cream section. Normally I don’t buy a mix of cream and powder unless the palette offers that feature. One/Size On Til’ Dawn Setting Spray My pick for the best setting spray of the year is the One/Size On Til’ Dawn Setting Spray. It works in hot, humid Florida and keeps my makeup in place through yoga. It does make me feel like I’m spraying a can of hairspray on my face. My tip is to take a deep breath and then hold it before you spray your face. After you spray your face, use a small fan to help it dry down quickly. While I do still use Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, it’s only with my eyeshadows to help intensify color. It doesn’t irritate my eyes, so it’s perfect for me to use to foil eyeshadows, or create liner with an eyeshadow. VE Cosmetics Innocent Lip Gloss The VE Cosmetics Innocent Lip Gloss (received in PR) is my favorite gloss shade and formula of the year, followed closely by Half-Magic Beauty Magic Drip Glitter Lip Gloss. Innocent wins because it’s an enchanting multichrome gloss that shifts shades of pink, lilac, blue, turquoise, and purple. It looks amazing on top of every color. It’s non sticky, very pigmented, and very long wearing for a gloss. Half-Magic Beauty Magic Drip Glitter Lip Gloss The Half-Magic Beauty Magic Drip Glitter Lip Gloss is a very close second to VE Cosmetics in formula. It’s a very smooth formula with multidimensional sparkle that is not sticky or tacky. It doesn’t migrate around my face onto my teeth or chin. I wear Y2k Cherub (cool pink with multidimensional sparkle), Frosty B*tch (neutral icy peach with multi-colored reflects), and Problem Child (sheer black with multi-colored sparkle). However, it’s a very limited shade range and I would like to see them add a cool-toned red. Y2k Cherub is great for cool-toned makeup looks.  I like Frosty B*tch for neutral to warm leaning looks. Problem Child is perfect for when I want to wear black. Black Moon Cat’s Meow Palette I was sent the Black Moon Cat’s Meow Palette in PR, however I would have purchased this for myself. I did purchase the palette to gift to a friend of mine. You can see my live brush swatches here. It’s an awesome, unique, cool-toned leaning palette. If you like Black Moon’s matte eyeshadow formula and cool tones, you’ll enjoy the Cat’s Meow palette. Winter Solstice Ceremony Look I wore Frost themed blue winter makeup to the Winter Solstice Ceremony that Dave and I attended at the Lotus Pond with many of our friends and community. I’m 46 years old, so the skin under my eyes is delicate and prone to creasing or caking if I don’t delicately apply the thinnest layers of product in that area. I find that the LYS Triple Fix Blurring and Hydrating Skin Tint Foundation Stick works best if I don’t apply it there. Instead, I apply Rare Beauty Positive Light Under Eye Brightener under my eyes to minimize creasing. The Eye Brightener blends into the Stick foundation with no issues. One/Size Attention Seeker 3D Blush Trio The best blush formula that I’ve found all year is the One/Size 3D Blush Trio in Attention Seeker. The cream formula melts into my skin to give me a beautiful, cool toned pink blush. The coordinating powder is great for setting the cream. Attention Seeker blush has gotten me more compliments and questions about what blush I’m wearing than anything else this year. Unfortunately, the entire line leans very warm, so I don’t foresee myself picking up any other shades. The best thing about the One/Size 3D Blush Trio is that it actually has a clear lid to prevent any powder from mixing into the cream section. Normally I don’t buy a mix of cream and powder unless the palette offers that feature. One/Size On Til’ Dawn Setting Spray My pick for the best setting spray of the year is the One/Size On Til’ Dawn Setting Spray. It works in hot, humid Florida and keeps my makeup in place through yoga. It does make me feel like I’m spraying a can of hairspray on my face. My tip is to take a deep breath and then hold it before you spray your face. After you spray your face, use a small fan to help it dry down quickly. While I do still use Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, it’s only with my eyeshadows to help intensify color. It doesn’t irritate my eyes, so it’s perfect for me to use to foil eyeshadows, or create liner with an eyeshadow. VE Cosmetics Innocent Lip Gloss The VE Cosmetics Innocent Lip Gloss (received in PR) is my favorite gloss shade and formula of the year, followed closely by Half-Magic Beauty Magic Drip Glitter Lip Gloss. Innocent wins because it’s an enchanting multichrome gloss that shifts shades of pink, lilac, blue, turquoise, and purple. It looks amazing on top of every color. It’s non sticky, very pigmented, and very long wearing for a gloss. Half-Magic Beauty Magic Drip Glitter Lip Gloss The Half-Magic Beauty Magic Drip Glitter Lip Gloss is a very close second to VE Cosmetics in formula. It’s a very smooth formula with multidimensional sparkle that is not sticky or tacky. It doesn’t migrate around my face onto my teeth or chin. I wear Y2k Cherub (cool pink with multidimensional sparkle), Frosty B*tch (neutral icy peach with multi-colored reflects), and Problem Child (sheer black with multi-colored sparkle). However, it’s a very limited shade range and I would like to see them add a cool-toned red. Y2k Cherub is great for cool-toned makeup looks.  I like Frosty B*tch for neutral to warm leaning looks. Problem Child is perfect for when I want to wear black. Black Moon Cat’s Meow Palette I was sent the Black Moon Cat’s Meow Palette in PR, however I would have purchased this for myself. I did purchase the palette to gift to a friend of mine. You can see my live brush swatches here. It’s an awesome, unique, cool-toned leaning palette. If you like Black Moon’s matte eyeshadow formula and cool tones, you’ll enjoy the Cat’s Meow palette. Final Thoughts I hope you enjoy my winter makeup inspiration and the mini Best of 2024 beauty reviews that I shared. 2024 has been the most challenging year of my life and I’m grateful to be closing the chapter on it.
