That scene where Tyriant appears goes so hard if you theorise (as I do) that he's actually the reanimated King Arnout of Zwaardsrust.
We know Arnout was a knight, not to mention Tyriant is dressed in a threadbare purple robe, and the purple orb (of Zwaardsrust) is in his eye socket - purple is predominantly a recurring colour of Zwaardsrust, so it isn't exactly a stretch to assume when the King led the fight against the monster hoard, he would have been wearing his country's colours.
Now, just to hammer it home, Tyriant appears from where? Behind the empty throne in the room.
We also know (due to a side-quest) that the souls of those who died in that war are not all at rest, and in need of help crossing over. I imagine the spirit of a King, who couldn't save his homeland, is most certainly among them.
It certainly adds a deliciously dark angle where Jasper is concerned - Mordegon's right hand man. If this truly is the case, Jasper knows, and sent Tyriant in after him as what he likely hoped was a final dig at Hendrik.
That, if Hendrik struck the finishing blow, he would have killed the man who led the charge and saved his life all those years ago. Or, conversely, the man who saved his life would be the one to end it.
Edit:
Just to add to this (since I’m replaying rn), the sidequest monsters in Zwaardsrust you have to soothe are Deadnauts (the skeletal soldiers), and a book (Zwaardsrust: a Ruined Realm) in the Warrior’s Rest states:
“Now little remains of that once-great kingdom save the crumbling ruins. At night, the wind blowing through them sounds eerily like the mournful weeping of the slain king. A grim reminder of his tragic fate…”
It doesn’t seem at all hard to believe that Mordegon, probably using the same dark magic he did with Jasper and Mia, was able to transform what had previously been just a poor, mournful Deadnaut.
It’s easy to ask why the loyal king of a kingdom would switch sides, but you only have to look at Jasper and Mia. Mordegon is a master manipulator, and speaks to the insecurities in people’s hearts.
Jasper gets to be bigger and stronger than Hendrik. Mia gets all the gold she wants, and doesn’t have to answer to anybody - in fact, all of her gold monster servants are the vikings who made her life miserable!
And Arnout gets to help command an army he is told can never lose.
Update:
Tyriant’s helmet doesn’t just have horns (albeit one is broken off). It ALSO has prongs surrounding the base that make it look like… a king’s crown.
Oof… 🥺
OH. And checking his bio in the defeated monsters list is… INTERESTING???
“A king among undead soldiers, and one of the Lord of Shadows’ Spectral Sentinels. His soul has been so blackened by his countless cruelties that he shuns the light with a limitless passion.”

Im deep into dq11's post game and i have feelings
I wish you could see Dundrasil rebuilt. You get to rebuild Cobblestone, in one timeline Carnelian (and Jade) and Rab both talk about rebuilding their cities...
In the other timeline, Heliodor was never destroyed !
I want to rebuild Dundrasil and then go rebuild Zwaardrust so that no one has their hometown left in ruins !
Let's rebuild Cobblestone ! Then let's go rebuild Dundrasil ! And let's build New Zwaardrust on top of the old one !
#they would probably want to make hendrik the king but i dont think he would accept#i think we'd see the first timeine hendrik come back in a way#like he doesnt want to be a king he just wants to serve people#dragon quest#dq#dq11#dragon quest 11#dq11 spoilers#dragon quest 11 spoilers#not massive spoilers but eh

It is a travesty that Hendrik and Rab don’t keep their clown costumes. I’d have Hendrik as an angry clown all the time.

I reblogged this but I wanted my tags here as well actually
my main problem with objectification isn't that it's degrading and dehumanizing but that not enough people get weird and intense with it

Some of my Hendrik headcanons:
1. Very opinionated on what constitutes the perfect remoulade
2. Once won a cured meat eating contest by accident during his snack break. Wasn’t even competing, he was just close enough to the main stage for everyone to make the assumption, and bet on him
3. When lost in the woods during his “mushroom foraging saved my life” scare, absolutely consumed at least one psychedelic shroom and was visited by the apparition of Horse Hendrik - not sure if it would be funnier for that to be a majestic Hendrik looking centaur, or merely a regular horse with Hendrik’s face
4. Before their miscommunication-driven spat, Jasper and Hendrik likely got into all sorts of mischief in the castle while growing up: Hendrik the long suffering friend who always says yes, and Jasper being the conniving ringleader of the pair. Hendrik ofc was always the only one to get into trouble because Jasper would scarper at the last minute
5. Hendrik recoils at the sight of seafood. Fish is fine. Prawns, lobsters and the like are absolutely not, however. Far too visually similar to insects for him to go there. Which made negotiating the seafood paellas in Puerto Valor while he was training there an entertaining sight for everyone else involved
5a. On this note, Sylvando has absolutely thrown at least one prawn at Hendrik, who shrieked at just the right pitch to shatter a nearby church window
6. Hendrik has absolutely traversed the castle halls at night during the summer months in naught but his boxers on a midnight haunch of venison run. Has absolutely bumped into Carnelian and Jade who were doing the same, except for desserts and sweets. And they had the decency to be fully clothed. Cue hilarity
7. Hendrik and Jade balance each others phobias perfectly. Hendrik can reach the top shelves so Jade doesn’t need to get on a ladder. Jade can catch and get rid of the bugs in Hendrik’s quarters.
7a. She has absolutely put some in there on occasion just to test a theory. The theory is “does Hendrik’s caterwauling extend to the outer reaches of the castle’s perimeter on discovery of a live cockroach in his desk drawer?” The answer is: yes
8. Hendrik inevitably infodumps about his horse whenever the opportunity presents itself. “Were you aware that Obsidian is nineteen and a half hands high? Truly he is a majestic creature beyond compare.”
9. Hendrik also very likely named his horse according to the Heliodor naming conventions whereby nearly everyone is a precious or semi precious stone (Jade, Carnelian, Jasper, Ruby, etc…)
9a. This is especially poignant given that after losing his homeland, Heliodor became his new home 🥺
10. Laments of Princess Jade’s “tomboyishness” (e.g. in the JP character book), but absolutely secretly enjoys a woman that can kick his ass (also Jade)
11. Sketches realistic horses to relax - when he’s not “reading” to achieve an altogether different kind of relaxation… (again, the character book pretty much alludes to him ‘cracking one out’:
“Stress relief: Reading”.
💀
12. Absolutely crushes on the princess Jade, but is content to be a volcel bc he cannot have her - and would never presume he would ever be allowed to in the first place
13. Again, going by the JP character book, Hendrik is no follower of fashion, and so Jasper has not only designed their matching armour, he has also in the past tricked Hendrik into wearing “very fashionable formal wear” when they were to attend banquets and parties together - only he always made sure Hendrik was wearing last year’s fashion
14. Hendrik is the sort of gentle giant that cats flock to him - something made all the more hilarious given his terrible cat allergies.
14a. Man-hating cats always seem to love him. NPCs are always remarking “oh, but my cat usually HATES men!! :0” as one jumps into his lap, trapping him there out of politeness as he fights not to sneeze, and his eyelids begin to swell

Hate dq11's act 2 intro storyline for Jade. It's gross, it's not funny or charming, it's just gross anime lecher trope, and it didn't need to be
In none complaints but rather pondering, I wish there had been a way to not forgive Hendrik at first go. I think it would have been interesting for him to have to earn it, same as the king.
Not grovelling or anything but like, come on, these people made the Luminary's life hell. And you can argue that the king was possessed but Hendrik has no excuse. Unthinking, unquestioning loyalty to an evil authority is an act of evil. He just turned off critical thinking.
Obvs I don't really expect this from a dq game, but I'd still love it
#dq11#dragon quest xi#anyway prayer circle for female protagonist option in dq12#the Luminary could have been a woman!!!
