no one talks about hen and chim going "you didn't do anything wrong!" "you didnt do anything wrong first!!" in 7x03... the way they're so best friends

one of the things I love about tv writers with long careers is I get to see little glimmers of characters I love in the new thing these writers create. I see so much of Zoe and wash in hen and chim, Saffron would absolutely match taylor Kelly’s freak, I feel like if you split mal’s personality in half one half would be Bobby and one half would be Buck (Buck 1.0 especially also has a little dash of Jayne god bless him).

I love Eddie and Chims reaction to hearing Buck and Hen were drunk, it was a mix of concern and "why the hell are you getting drunk without me?"
(Did anyone make gifs of their reactions?)

do you think hen wakes up in the bunks sometimes in the middle of the night and sees chimney sleeping across from her and has to check his pulse. do you think chimney insists on being the person using the defib on every call. do you think about them healing together through every call, every person that they save after jonah

the more I watch season 7 the more I’m like. man. what was season 6a even trying to do. their weird fixation on not having any Hen/Chim and Buck/Eddie scene. that inexplicable Eddie/Carla episode. the potentially traumatic storyline for Evan-I’m-just-spare-parts-Buckley reduced to a bunch of blue balls jokes. like. where they were going. was the driver even in the car.

it would be hilarious if we got the hotshots spec right but the characters wrong. hotshots is bobby's storyline so it would make sense that it focus on him and athena, but that's too obvious. buck and eddie would be fun, but the wilson-han family is an option too

you know what I have realised about buck and eddie, is that yes Buck would save Eddie in a heart beat and eddie would do the same but the one thing that makes their relationship so special and different from those at the 118 is that they have the family dinners, they have quiet moments between all the crazy and they always turn to each other for guidance or a should to listen too which makes it a true partnership.
anon this ask was perfectly timed bc i was just thinking about this earlier today!! granted, it was in a different context (the context was the diazes potentially meeting buck in s7, knowing him as eddie's best friend and recognizing him as the person who saved their son's life during the shooting but not knowing how intimately connected he actually is to eddie and christopher and thus not fully understanding why eddie would choose to make buck chris's legal guardian)...but you get the gist. and like. while i am in no way intending to diminish any of the platonic relationships between the members of the 118 because all five of them (+ their spouses and families) love each other dearly, and they are a family both inside and out of work at their core....none of them are as ridiculously enmeshed in each other's lives at the level that buck and eddie are.
take henchim. chimney adores hen to the moon and back and hen adores him right back, but chimney is so clearly denny's uncle chimney, and the show has made it a point to frame him as such. the scene in 6x13 where chimney is sitting outside on the porch with denny speaks volumes when you compare it to buck, who steps in with eddie and christopher every single time. who goes home with them because that's his home too. buck, who isn't an uncle or another singular thing that can be defined, he's just eddie and christopher's buck. and this isn't to say that hen and chimney's love for one another is any less real.....just that it's so fundamentally different from eddie and buck's insane dynamic.

story-wise honestly if anyone would feel like he had to fall in line with gerrard it would be chim. NOT to protect himself do you hear me!!!!!!! but because he has custody of mara and they cannot jeopardize that for anything. so this is why eddie is the attack dog on the offense and why henchim’s destruction plan has to be quiet and underhanded.

thoughts on hen's relationship to her body and gender and especially the concept of pregnancy. in both times pregnancy was plot significant in the show (karen's ivf, then maddie's ppd) she seemed to have an... odd understanding of it, emotionally speaking.
with the ivf she couldnt grasp karen's grief and struggled to understand how karen felt her embryos as a part of her. hen referred to the whole deal an "idea," detaching it from the physical reality. that disassociation of the pregnancy as "a step on the way to a baby" from its reality as a bodily process stands out to me.
and then there's maddie's ppd. henchim's fight in late s6 may have been. uhh. out of left field and a pitiable reach for Drama but. i do find hen's attitude toward maddie's ppd salvageable when considering hen's broader relationship to pregnancy.
hen is a black butch-leaning lesbian. masculine women, lesbians, and black women are three groups of women who are among the most distanced from "femaleness" in society, and hen is all three. given this identity, i can see her growing up repulsed by/uncomfortable with her body and dissociating from it, just on account of living in a world that treats bodies like hers so violently. after being shot as a teenager, too, hen could have disassociated from her body to cope with the physical trauma. ultimately i have a hard time believing that, with the life she's led, she's had an easy relationship to her body and bodily autonomy.
going back to pregnancy, the association between femaleness=femininity=maternity has a long history of twisting people's relationship to pregnancy; with hen's history, i imagine that being especially relevant. i suspect the idea of getting pregnant has always been something hen was personally repulsed by. it's interesting how the idea of hen carrying henren's baby is never raised. it's not even a question, even though plenty of butch women do get pregnant, happily. it's just an unspoken fact is that hen would never get pregnant. it's a given.
so i suppose it's no shock that hen has a disturbed relationship to pregnancy that, unfortunately, she may sometimes on project on others, as with karen. her relationship to pregnancy is just one manifestation of her uneasy relationship to her body and gender, i feel

thinking about Jee-Yun and Mara going to gymnastics together. maybe Mara is still with Madney when the year starts. Jee's class happens right before Mara's. for logistics reasons they have to sit through each other's class. Mara likes to do her homework during Jee's class, so she's free when they get home. Jee likes to watch the big girls do their thing. when Mara is back with Henren, she still likes to be there at the same time as Jee. this day of the week becomes a weekly Wilson-Han evening. sometimes it's just Karen and Maddie with the kids because Henchim are on shift. one time Denny had a sleepover so the Weekly Wilson-Han Evening became Girls Night. the next year, Jee moves on to another extracurricular, but Mara keeps up with gymnastics.
