Hellsinki Metal Festival de Finlandia invita  por primera vez a una banda chilena 

El proyecto Come To Latin America (CTLA) lanzó METAL SWAP, una campaña que  promoverá la participación de una banda chilena en un festival de Rock en Finlandia  en agosto de 2024 y de un grupo finlandés en CL.Rock.  

El objetivo es promover la escena del Rock/Metal, hacerla más vibrante, y crear  oportunidades para el intercambio y la internacionalización de los grupos a través de  charlas y talleres. 

Come to Latin America (CTLA) es un proyecto de exportación de música heavy metal  apoyado y financiado por el Ministerio de Educación y Cultura de Finlandia. Tras la gira  latinoamericana de la banda finlandesa Where’s My Bible -ganadores de la versión 2022  de esta campaña, con votación de internautas de toda la región-, este año CTLA se  dedica a Chile y su escena de los sonidos pesados. 

En esta nueva edición, junto con organizar la presentación de una banda chilena en  Finlandia, se realizarán charlas educativas y se crearán instancias para conectar a los  grupos chilenos y latinoamericanos con sus pares finlandeses. Además, se promoverán  nuevas bandas cada semana a través de las redes sociales de CTLA. Todo esto, a través  de la campaña METAL SWAP. 

"Estamos muy emocionados de ayudar a promover la escena metalera chilena y en el  resto de América Latina”, dice Niina Fu, creadora de CTLA. 

Banda chilena en festival finlandés 

Está contemplado que una banda chilena de Rock/Metal participe en la próxima edición  del Hellsinki Metal Festival, a celebrarse el 9 y 10 de agosto en la capital de Finlandia.  

Las tres bandas chilenas candidatas para participar en el festival son Sobernot,  Demoniac y Alterhyde, las cuales fueron preseleccionadas por media partners y  periodistas especializados. 

Representantes del festival finlandés elegirán a la banda chilena, cuyo nombre se  anunciará próximamente a través de las redes sociales de CTLA y de los medios que  están apoyando esta iniciativa, como Rockaxis y Radio Futuro.  

En paralelo, se está eligiendo a una banda finlandesa para que forme parte del festival  CL.Rock, que se realizará el 10 de noviembre en el Estadio Santa Laura de Santiago. Los  candidatos finlandeses, elegidos por representantes de la prensa especializada y de  CTLA, se darán a conocer en agosto y la nominada será parte de dicho espectáculo. 

Oportunidades para jóvenes artistas 

El principal beneficio de METAL SWAP para las bandas es la visibilidad internacional y la  creación de redes con bandas de metal finlandesas. Además, esta campaña ofrece a  todas las bandas del proyecto la posibilidad de participar en cuatro talleres en línea  sobre internacionalización y desarrollo profesional.

Premio para los nominados 

Neural DSP, fundada por los chilenos Douglas Castro y Francisco Crespo, es una  empresa que recibió el prestigioso “Premio a la Internacionalización del Presidente de la  República de Finlandia” en 2023.  

Esta compañía ha desarrollado software y hardware avanzado de procesamiento digital  de señales para músicos, especialmente guitarristas y bajistas. Neural DSP donará un  premio equivalente a 6.000 euros, dividido entre las bandas chilenas y finlandesas que  ganen esta versión de CTLA.

La visita de Hernán Rojas, miembro del jurado de CTLA, a Finlandia 

El objetivo de CTLA es aumentar la cooperación de diversas maneras, incluyendo la  invitación de profesionales de la música a Finlandia. En la primera fase del proyecto,  participaron 100 profesionales de la música latinoamericana, entre ellos Hernán Rojas.  El año pasado, este reconocido productor musical chileno y actual miembro del jurado  de CTLA, visitó Finlandia en el marco del proyecto. 

El punto culminante de la visita fue cuando Rojas se convirtió en el primer  latinoamericano en participar en el Nordic Business Forum, una conferencia 

internacional de gran relevancia que reúne a más de 6.500 líderes empresariales  provenientes de más de 50 países. En ediciones anteriores, han participado en este  encuentro personalidades como el Presidente Barack Obama, Arnold Schwarzenegger y  George Clooney, entre otros.

En este viaje, Rojas expuso acerca del poder de la música y del rock como motor de  cambio en procesos educativos y organizacionales. “Un momento especial fue la  realización de un taller con jóvenes en el colegio Suutarinkylä, cuna de muchas de las  bandas de rock, pop y metal finlandés, comenta Hernan Rojas. 

“¡Esperamos recibir en el futuro a otros profesionales vinculados con la industria  musical chilena en Finlandia”, dice Niina Fu.

Cyberpunk Helsinki Sessions #3 and #4

For session 3 we began the campaign proper. Citrine got us a job with a metal band, Syóveri. They'd received a note telling them to drop out of the upcoming music fest Hellsinki, lest "The hammer fall", a spent russian 9x39 casing included with the note. They gave us about 4 days to find and deal with the culprits before the band hunkered down in a safehouse. We were given a few leads:

Ukko's ex, Anna: Syóveri's frontman Ukko was dating a metal groupie named Anna until he saw her out with a previously-unmentioned boyfriend. Between this lack of transparency and her previous theft of his treasured Moomin briefs, Ukko decided he'd had enough, and broke it off. We were asked to retrieve the briefs if at all possible.

Jone Vinkeri: Music journalist who prefers to interview drunk. Syóveri are teetotalers, so they were passed over for an interview in favour of a nazi metal band, Helheim. The band have held a grudge ever since.

The runners-up of the Hellsinki entry competition. The festival committee keeps the losers a secret, so we would have to find out from them. The band requested that we keep their circumstances a secret from both Vinkeri and the committee.

We decided to pursue Anna first. We parked outside her building, but couldn't see anything useful inside with Cordoba's drone. After failing to tail her to work that morning, we elected to search her apartment. Finland's disc tumbler locks aren't really pickable for schlubs like us, so the only way in is to look for improperly-installed locks that can be jimmied open, or to find an alternate entrance. After getting caught by a kid from another apartment, we managed to pose as maintenance workers. The kid told us it was possible to get in through the back window. Loco climbed up and let us inside. We searched the place, but it was almost completely sterile. Like an airbnb. Scarcely any sign of occupation there, and no moomin briefs. Just a closet full of rockabilly t-shirts. We figured either she was a fed or we got the wrong place, since Ukko was as confused as we were.

We went to talk to the festival committee about the contest's losers, with Maxx and Citrine posing as foreign journalists. Vikeri was there with them. They were excited about the idea of the finnish music scene being well-known internationally, and in our claim that we were writing an article on the contest's runners-up. They told us the first runner-up to Syóveri was Kurie Váki of the one-person experimental electronic music group Inconel: A reclusive auteur known for her insistence on her Totalised Artistic Vision, for undergoing throat-surgery for extended vocal ranges, and for her use of machinery for instrument samples. She could be found in the jungle-themed nightclub and artist's coop The Urban Jungle.

Leaving our weapons at the door, we entered the club with only the barest idea of what we were after with this lead. Citrine chatted up a nervous dweeb at the bar, Antti, who told us the coop, the Psychadelic Monkey Village, was accessed by bungie-jumping from the roof, and into the floor above the bar. He brought us up and showed us how to do the jump. He skipped out on the jump, using his key to take the elevator. Using his key, we regrouped with Cordoba and Loco, and asked Antti to show us around. He was suspicious about our motives, but complied. We found Kurie's floor, and barged into her unlocked apartment. She was in the middle of work, and was understandably frazzled by the intrusion.

Loco, who'd been curious about branching into recording BDs, asked if Kurie knew about them at all. She directed us to Gerard on the floor above. Loco proceeded to neg Kurie about not using the emotional manipulation of BDs to aid in realizing her Totalised Artistic Vision. She seemed to give it some thought. Maxx asked if she had anything to do with the death threats. She was surprised and pleased that she'd made it as far in the contest as she had, and was annoyed with us for assuming some indie nobody would be responsible for the threats. Citrine was upset with our negative energy and bad vibes. Kurie suggested we look into the nazi band Helheim, though she wasn't able to tell us anything about them apart from the fact that they suck, and that the lead singer (Antero Valkiapáá, brother of soon-to-be-released war criminal Juhani Valkiapáá) possesses the band's only claim to fame, in the form of an "Exit Only" ass tattoo (Though Maxx could swear she'd heard it was "Exit nly"). We thanked Kurie for her time and apologized profusely.

Wanting to pursue her BD lead while we were there, Loco led the group upstairs to Gerard's place. He seemed terrified of us, and we noticed he matched the description we'd been given of Anna's boyfriend. He'd seen us searching the apartment on their cameras, and assumed we were hitmen. It turned out Gerard and Anna had a side hustle where Anna would sleep with indie musicians, covertly record a sex tape BD, steal some personal effects, and then sell it when the musician hits it big. We let Ukko know, and he said he was willing to split the sex tape profits with Gerard. Gerard also returned the pilfered moomin briefs. In return for letting him keep his setup, he agreed to help Loco with BD recording.

We were able to find out where Helheim practiced from the festival committee as part of our "research", and sent Citrine to act like a groupie and get them talking. She accompanied them back to their apartment for drinks, with Maxx, Cordoba, and Loco following behind in Maxx's van. The bandmembers got loudly drunk, thoroughly harshing Citrine's vibes, and bragged about a suppressed SR-3M they'd gotten through Antero's connections. They seemed thoroughly under the impression that they'd been close to winning the entry competition, and made loud promises of vengeance. Citrine got them to show off the gun, emptying the mag, and prompting them to dig up the ammo boxes they'd hidden outside the building to reload it. The rest of the group, clad in ski masks, beat Helheim to the cache, swiping the ammo (Which happened to be 9x39), and ambushing them. The party "kidnapped" Citrine, and made the band hand over the empty gun, piling into the van with the stolen ammo and speeding off.

We celebrated with Syóveri, having tracked down both the source of the note/casing and the moomin briefs within the span of about 24 hours. Our job wasn't over, but we'd made a great start.
