i'm not 2 minutes into Hellraiser: Revelations and i already fucking hate everything about it, jesus fucking christ, this is going to be a miserable hour and 10 minutes. at least it's mercifully short, the shortest Hellraiser so far, i doubt much hell will be raised, but ig that is the tiniest victory i can get from this. but amazon put like six fucking ads in between the movie so i'm sure it's going to be like fucking 2 hours while actually watching.

Woah, two Hellraiser films in one night! It's like Christmas, but like, if Christmas was Hellraiser: Revelations and your parents hated you. So what make this, the ninth film, so remarkably special isn't just that it's bad, no. No no no. Bad, bad is something we can deal with.
This is a special kind of bad.
You see, Revelations includes a significant number of elements from the original film that I've found sorely lacking in the sequels. This one actually recreates a fair number of story elements that are unique to film one (and by extension, the original novella).
A pleasure seeker meets a mysterious figure who gifts him the Lemarchand Box. After being ripped apart by the Cenobites, he is revived through the spilling of blood which escalates into a series of murders at the hands of an accomplice to give life back to the pleasure seeker. The pleasure seeker ends up wearing another's skin as a ruse.
I think the best description I have for this one is unnecessarily exploitative. These films don't shy away from sex and violence, but in a very weird way, I don't think any of it actually adds anything to the movie. What exactly did that thing with the prostitute in the restroom actually add to this movie?
So there are two narratives happening. The first, which as I've outlined above, is basically the original Hellraiser's Julia/Frank plot and is background information which is periodically revealed to us as the second plot plays out. In the present, we have what feels like a standard home invasion, but where there's no invasion and everyone just sort of screams at everyone.
There's an interesting element in which our lead ends up stealing his friend's skin, who opens the Box and becomes a Cenobite. What I liked about this was that it actually shows us a brief moment where the Cenobites are doing Cenobitical things: we see a brief moment in Hell in which nothing is a plot to manipulate the damned, or punish a victim. It shows a brief glimpse of what is an actual Cenobite being taught and learning. This is actually kind of cool and flashes the world out ever so slightly more and would have been an excellent thing to expand on. The identity of this Cenobite is supposed to be a secret, but you've guessed the Reveal long before it's honestly worth setting up a Reveal.
There's an uncomfortable incest scene which is the exact moment you should have pieced together the Act Three Reveal, that Nico is wearing Stephen's skin.
This reveal, actually, this whole plot annoys me because I cannot for the like of me figure out what the point of the scene where he exposits in a trance is for, from a character perspective. Why would this character, if they are in a fugue state, speak as though he is not in fact, Nico in disguise? This feels like the writers had completely different intentions for these characters, then changed their minds as they continued, but did not go back and edit the script to accommodate.
I think I've keyed in on the biggest issue. This entire movie feels like a Rough Draft script written solely to get a script out. It feels like zero revisions were made and not a single person stepped in to polish it.
There's a return to basics that I did appreciate: The Cenobites are never actually given an Infernal explanation in this one. Hell, our live action Harry DuBois only uses the word "angel" to describe them. I love this interpretation of their purposes, which I guess makes sense since it is literally ripped directly from the first film.
I'm serious, this guy reminds me of Harry DuBois:
He's the vagrant who gives our leads the Box, which I guess technically would make him the Engineer, but, once again, that role seems to be had by the nail-headed Hell Priest.
We don't see much in the way of Cenobite design (truth be told, we don't see much of anything: this entire film's lighting feels like David Yates' most depraved fantasy; filters other than blue exist, you know!), but none of them are particularly new. Just rehashed versions of the nail-headed Cenobite, the Chattering Cenobite, oh look! There's a second nail-headed Cenobite!
So, why is this one so bad?
The best moment of the film is like thirty seconds long. The original parts of the story are boring, loud, and generally poorly written. The not-so-original parts are exactly the same as the first film, but they have chosen the exact worst ways to implement them.
I will admit, I saw exactly one turn on the Box that made me squee happily, if only because it was a corner turn and not the exact same two-move opening that has so royally pissed me off seeing. That's right guys, I got more joy out of a character making a move on the Box that was different than the opening sequence used in basically every other movie (any points this would have awarded us are lost because this turn exists in one scene, and the three other instances of the Box being opened return back to the standard two moves). It's a Puzzle Box, dammit! Is it really that fucking difficult to show this thing being opened like an actually fucking Puzzle Box??
I do not want to watch Judgement after this complete waste of time reboot. Officially it's a sequel, but this has reboot written all over it. Actually, this has "I'm about to lose franchise rights" written all over it.

So, I kind of finished my random Hellraiser movie-watching madness, and here is my personal list of ordering the Hellraiser films from best to worst:
1. Hellraiser (1987)
2. Hellbound: Hellraiser ||
3. Hellraiser (2022)
4. Hellraiser: Hellseeker (VI)
5. Hellraiser |||: Hell on Earth
6. Hellraiser: Bloodline (IV)
7. Hellraiser: Deader (VII)
8. Hellraiser: Judgement (X)
9. Hellraiser: Hellworld (VIII)
10. Hellraiser: Inferno (V)
11. Hellraiser: Revelations (IX)
I know everyone has REALLY different opinions on these lol This is just mine. Ramblings below.
1. Hellraiser (1987)
If you're not rating this at the top, what even are you doing? OG. Classic. Great. Yes, they have visibly worked with different tech regarding the make-up, fake blood, etc. It just adds to the charm. Also: Kirsty <3
2. Hellbound: Hellraiser ||
This goes hand-in-hand with the first one. It also has that part with Kirsty getting the Cenobites to protect them, which is great. 10/10 no notes.
3. Hellraiser (2022)
Sorry, not sorry for putting it this high. It's just so pretty. And the cast is great. Overall eye-candy. I mean, I have a soft spot for Goran Višnjić in this (liar) in general. And Jamie Clayton just really made the role of the Priestess her own. I think with some of the Pinhead re-casts the issue was that they just put another guy in there, but with her, she really owned the role. The references back to the OG are subtle, and overall I think it did the original film justice.
4. Hellraiser: Hellseeker (VI)
I would be lying if I said the Pinhead & Kirsty scene didn't influence me to rate it this high. But also, I feel like this is the film that Inferno was trying (and failing) to be. You have the plotline with the police, and the cheating husband, but you actually care about what happens to the characters because it's Kirsty and his husband not just random people with no backstory. I'm going to say it again: I personally enjoyed Trevor's suffering and Kirsty getting blood on her hands. There is also something to be said about the early-2000's anxiety about surveillance.
5. Hellraiser |||: Hell on Earth
This still has a very similar vibe to I & II, which is a plus. I get that people think Pinhead is OOC here. Personally, I think his behavior could be explained by what happened to him. To me, it was hilarious that he basically let the human part of him die to save someone else, got stuck in a statue and his brain-to-mouth filter just disappeared. And then the human part kept haunting people. You also have Terri and Joey whom I love dearly.
6. Hellraiser: Bloodline (IV)
I appreciated the backstory, and I appreciated Angelique. Also, as I've said before the space-station setting didn't feel overly gratuitous. Imo it served a purpose and added to the narrative saying "we are so far in the future and these angels/demons are still here". At this point in the movies, it felt really good to get a little history lesson too about where the box was coming from.
7. Hellraiser: Deader (VII)
I would not call this (or the rest on this list for that matter) a good film. There was something personally relatable and therefore terrifying to me about this movie. It leans strongly on the idea that the ones you should be afraid of the most are human and I like that. The subway car scenes are also fun, but I'm taking minus points for the Hungarian name in the address that the guy pronounced like it was an Italian city. Oh yeah, and if you are claustrophobic... good luck?
8. Hellraiser: Judgement (X)
Very bizarre, but not half that bad? The scenes followed a plot that made sense and were enjoyably done. Pinhead wasn't OOC despite it not being Doug Bradley, of course. The guy with the glasses was also fun. Bonus points, because Kirsty can make deals, but Carter can't :P At the same time, this film is nowhere near as good as some of the older ones.
9. Hellraiser: Hellworld (VIII)
Just. No? I mean, part of me appreciates the geeky "fandom" setting and the 2005 technology. But. No. It's like Teen Wolf meets Hellraiser, and that is not a compliment (although I like both but... no) I just have an incoherent "this tasted bad" feeling about this movie lol If I had to articulate it, I would say that the plot felt very unfinished.
10. Hellraiser: Inferno (V)
So boring. I wasn't opposed to the concept because I think the question: "What does the police have to say about all of this?" is a good and valid one. But man, the execution sucked. I had zero sympathy for the main guy, but I also didn't feel gleefully malicious as I did with Trevor. Yeah, I can't recommend this one.
11. Hellraiser: Revelations (IX)
Ugh. First of all, the protagonists are two spoiled brats, whose troubles offer nothing interesting. Like, okay, you had a temper-tantrum and opened the box, congratulations I guess? Kirsty was more mature than this in the first movie. Second, and I'm sorry to say but this is the worst Pinhead recast out of them. He looked like a boy in his father's shoes. Tbh the cenobites all look worse. The plot also moves too fast and the references back to the old stuff are really clumsy. I'm sorry but I hated it.

Do u think that Kylo is going to die in the final film? It's a year in the future and possibly Kylo and rey have been talking throuhgnthe bond but it seemed to me that rey cut that tie and will be ignoring him. Rey might be the one that kills Kylo based in spoilers I've read. I love reylo but got this sad feeling that we won't get a happy ending
I’m not the least bit concerned, tbh, nonnie. I’ll be frank, Ben is from three legacy bloodlines: Skywalker, Solo and Amidala. And that’s just one of the marketing reasons why he won’t die. Solo is beloved as is Luke and Leia, and though the Prequels weren’t well liked, Padme was a major component in creating the conflict as it currently stands in the Sequels and even with the mistakes she made in story, she was a powerful insight into the greater plot, especially with this dialogue here in RoTS. She saw that the inability of communication was the source of the war and she ultimately realized just how dangerous that was when stating this quote below.
“So this is how liberty dies… with thunderous applause.”
Another reason is Ben Solo was designed to be understood. His backstory is based on a failure to listen within the Skywalker family. This to me is the most glaring factor of all. We are meant to understand Ben’s struggle: his mistakes, his own self loathing because of these mistakes and his reluctance to accept the possibility of redemption. Ben is the aftermath and the reflection of a grandfather’s sin, which condemned every descendant thereafter. Leia, Han and Luke suffer as well. It would make no sense to tie up their ending in the Saga by killing their future and that’s just within story. As a moral message to the viewer, Ben is the journey to integration. And to top it all off, we are shown this through the eyes of a nurturing character, Rey, the symbol of water and sunlight, two things that stimulate growth and are – not ironically – mediums of rebirth.
The Skywalker line has lived in tragedy since Anakin fell to the dark side and this entire story would be a waste of time – and bad writing – if Ben Solo didn’t set things right and return to his true form, which is both dark and light; but make no mistake, he is Ben Solo and he carries his family with him. The entire premise of the SW story from what I’ve gathered over the year I’ve been in fandom is that it was wrong for both the Jedi and the Sith to stick to their single, rigid way of thinking, to see the world under only one set of rules when, in point of fact, there are no rules and the true order is acceptance of life as it is – true form. One isn’t meant to control a thing. One is meant to experience a thing. That’s Ben’s arc: accepting both halves of himself and becoming truly conscious of his place within the Force, experiencing it with eyes wide open.
Nah, I’m not worried nonnie and you shouldn’t be, either. ;D

Hellraiser IX: Revelations (2011)
I wish I could gather up the noodle-brained dung beetles who assembled Hellraiser: Revelations into a pot and cook them alive. I thought Hellraiser: Hellworld was bad. Compared to this, it's genius. Just when you’ve reached the lowest, most punishing level of the inferno, they mix things up by adding elements of a “found footage” horror and home invasion horror to the franchise. I paused the 75-minute feature to yell at it so often it took me two hours to finish it.
The families of Nico (Jay Gillespie) and Steven (Nick Eversman) are in shock after the boys disappear while vacationing in Tijuana (repeatedly and gratingly pronounced as “TiHWAnna!” by Nico). At the center of the mystery is a videotape featuring a tall man covered in leather with pins protruding from his face and scalp (Stephan Smith Collins). When Steven, reappears at his parent's house with the Lament Configuration Box, they're relieved; unaware the suffering has only begun.
There’s nothing to like about this movie. They don’t even have Doug Bradley back as Pinhead but this casting controversy is the least of this film’s worries. The characters guarantee you will hate the film with a burning passion. Steven, our protagonist encourages Nico to cheat on his girlfriend... and his girlfriend is his sister!
There’s barely anything going on in this movie, and what does happen makes no sense. Two young men disappear in Mexico, a private detective has been assigned to track them down but the police haven't been informed? If they had been, wouldn't the home video of at least two people being murdered... have been taken in as evidence? Logic takes a prolonged vacation in this picture. I dare you not to clench your fists or gnash your teeth during the final scene. It's one idiotic decision after another. Sitting there silently would cause your skull to burst into flames so don't even try.
I can’t get over it. These guys get a mysterious puzzle box from a smelly Mexican hobo, he tells them to open it up... and they do it? The guy missed out. He should've tried to sell them magic beans! It’s the worst Hellraiser film. It also showcases the worst elements of a “found footage” horror movie. There is no reason for the two young men to be shooting the video they're shooting. The camera being there creates inconsistencies in the story and the tape's discovery makes no sense. It also contains the worst elements of a “home invasion” horror story. You despise the future victims but feel no joy when they get slaughtered. I had some praise concerning at least an attempt to show the “pain and pleasure the realms of which you cannot fathom” thing that only a few of the entries have done, but that would be like saying that the vibrations of you getting hit by a car made the day 1% less rainy for an ant that was about to be stepped on.
I haven't seen all of the Hellraiser pictures. Based on the ratio of failures to successes, and how bad the bad ones have been, I don't think I need to. This is an awful franchise. If you’re going to watch any, just watch the first one and if you're really a big fan of it, watch Inferno too. Everything else is torture, particularly Hellraiser: Revelations. (On DVD, March 8, 2015)

October Project IX: The Call of the Old Nightmare Day 30
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
From The Adventure of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)
I feel like this is one of those things you watch as a kid, but you only remember the last bit of it with Ichabod in the forest at night. Bing Crosby narrated it and there is little to no dialog. The music is used to express how the characters are feeling and it works really well. I almost wish more animated projects would do that. The sound design and editing worked really well. The artwork was good and the backgrounds were neat and detailed. The forest at night was quite well designed. There were lots of comedic gags with the horse running away from the headless horseman, and with Brom and Ichabod near the start of the story. It was a bit much for me.
BuzzFeed Unsolved: True Crime (2020)
S7, Ep3. The Suspicious Death of Harry Houdini
This was an interesting video dealing with background on Harry Houdini and his death. I am counting it since he died on Halloween and worked to expose fake mediums during the Spiritualism movement.
Overly Sarcastic Productions (2020)
Halloween Special: The Wild Hunt (2020)
All things lead to Odin apparently. This was a neat video about the different legends of the wild hunt throughout the world.
Atop the Fourth Wall (2020)
Pinhead vs. Marshal Law
Linkara should have gone with the Nightbreed/Hellraiser crossover. This comic was bad, but I liked his points about deconstructing superheroes and how if you want to see a good version of it watch Megamind.
Longbox of the Damned (2020)
Star Trek (Gold Key) #21
There are Cyborgs Mummies and one of them tries to take over the enterprise. What more needs to be said?

a recycled Hellraiser movie, now with racism and more misogyny and boring sex scenes and even less edge than the worst franchise entries so far! truly awful.
has the artlessness of Star Wars Episode IX and Wrong Turn 5 combined and blended together, painted over with even more empty aesthetic signifiers and franchise iconography, to make a movie with essentially no personality (the greatest crime of a Hellraiser film, even Hellseeker at least had a personality, as derivative and terrible as it was) or creative voice that feels like it goes on forever even though it's barely even 70 minutes without credits.

And as a major surprise, AMC FearFest will include the upcoming Child’s Play sequel Cult of Chucky! The news comes as a shock considering the film is first being released on VOD October 3rd, yet it does make sense once you consider it’s limited release. Creator/director Don Mancini has stated his desire to continue the killer doll series past Cult. What better way to get more audience exposure than to broadcast on a major network? Purely speculating, I believe Mancini might be making a power play to generate enough buzz to return the Child’s Play series back to the big screen.
As a fellow fiend and horror diehard, I can point to the annual AMC FearFest as the launchpad for my fandom. Of all the horror films I’ve seen in my lifetime, many I first saw on the marathon. I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping FearFest will be around to provide new generations of fans the same gift!
