Just Another Family Dinner

Alec smiled to himself when he stood in front of the mirror. Family dinners were never appealing to any of the Lightwoods, but that was in the past. The Lightwoods finally became the family they were supposed to be. Every sibling, except for Max who was still young, was heading to the dinner with their lovers. It was a beautiful sight, and all the gang was happy because finally they got to be a normal family, well, ignoring the fact that said family dedicated to erase evil and fight demons. Alec’s mouth curved up, he didn’t care if they weren’t normal, all he cared about was that he had all of his beloved ones by his side.

Evil defeated once again, the Lightwood’s decided to make a family dinner on one of the fanciest restaurants in the city. Of course it was Magnus’s suggestion.

Magnus was sitting at the bed, watching his boyfriend getting ready to go to dinner. It was a beautiful sight, and Magnus felt so lucky to be the one who Alec loved. His boyfriend was wearing a stunning black suit. Magnus did know that all men looked so much better in a suit, but hell, Alexander Lightwood was in another whole level.

A well fitted suit and a white shirt beneath it with the first two buttons unbuttoned. was everything Magnus needed to be drooling. He caught Alec’s gaze in the mirror and smiled. Now that he had admired his shadowhunter, Magnus went to the dressing table to apply his make-up. Once he was done he got up and took his boyfriend’s hand in his. It was a beautiful night and they decided they had the time to go to the restaurant like mundanes. Maryse, Robert, Max, Izzy and Simon were already sitting at the table laughing and talking.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.” Magnus said once they took their seats.

“Hi, mom, dad, guys, what are you talking about?” Alec asked.

“We were just guessing what couple would be the last to arrive.” Maryse said.

“We decided to arrive in the mundane way. We had time. And I’m a little offended because I have a perfect timing.” Magnus said.

“Right. Like when you got to the institute just in time to stop Alec’s wedding.” Everyone laughed at that. Even Alec. He really had been so wrong.

“I still remember that movie scene.” Simon said. “That was the day I began with the shipping.”

“Like I said, perfect timing. On the other hand, where are my biscuit and the annoying blond? You weren’t talking about that, am I right? Because I don’t know about you but my guess is that they are doing some reckless stuff.”

“Or naughty.” Izzy said.

Robert and Maryse just closed their eyes. Too much information. They all remembered that time almost two weeks ago when Izzy had found the couple in a very compromising situation. Of course she had to tell everybody. Now every time someone goes to the weapons room accompanied, they get suspicious glances. Jace and Clary appeared by the door and took their seats after saying hello to everyone.

The waiter came and took their orders. It was Magnus’s turn to warn Robert about the ingredients in his plate, he wasn’t going to like them. Robert changed his order, after thanking Magnus for his advice.

The food arrived and so did the drinks, all the family made a toast because once again they had defeated the enemy and were safe and secure with all the people they loved. Everyone was glad they could have a little time of peace for themselves.

The night passed with mockery and laughs and soon all the conversation went to the child memories.

“Yeah, but seriously, you think you have your smart boyfriend and everything, you see him like that and think he has always been like this, what you don’t know is that he was the one who slept in history’s class.” Jace said to Magnus. Magnus snorted.

“Yeah, I might have been asleep a few times, but at least I wasn’t trying to impress the girls.”

“Well, it isn’t my fault that girls found history so attractive.”

“You didn’t exactly were showing of your knowledge, more like your new movements with a sword.”

“Uh, what sword?” Simon asked.

“Simon!” All the Lightwood’s whispered-shouted.

“Hey, relax. I’m joking. ” Simon raised his hands in surrender. “I don’t know what age we are referring to, I guess I was just trying to figure it out if this was the beginning of the...”

“Book club?” Clary complemented. Clary already knew how Jace got his conquests; the book club was full of girls.

“Fun fact,” Max said, joining the conversation. “I really don’t know a person who doesn’t ask ‘do you read?’ to Jace when he mentions that.”

“You traitor! I do read.” Jace said, feigning betrayal.

“That’s a joke that never ends, you have to understand that.” Izzy said, sipping her drink. Jace looked at her with a mischievous smirk, Alec saw that and immediately knew what was about to happen.

“You mean like the joke about your cooking skills?” Sadly, they all had to laugh, including Isabelle.

“You are paying for that, you know that, right?”

“It was worth it.”

“But seriously, who can actually cook in this family?” Asked Magnus.

“I mean, there’s a difference between a person who cooks and one that literally burns everything.” Maryse said.

“Mom!”

“Sorry, dear. Magnus is right, we aren’t chefs but hey, you scared me more than once when you were at the kitchen.”

“Fair enough.” Izzy said.

“I know for a fact that I can’t cook, Maryse is a decent cook as well as Jace, Clary, Simon and Magnus.” Robert said.

“What?” Alec asked.

“Does that count? Magnus literally has magic in his hands.” Clary said.

“Yes, that’s what Alec says all nights.” Jace said, winking.

“Jace!” All the members of the family reprimanded him, except for Magnus and Alec, the latter was busy blushing while Magnus just stood there with an incredulous look. That reckless blond was so going to pay, but that would be for another day.

“Oh, right but when you eat my food I don’t see you guys complaining.”

“We wouldn’t do that but what’s fair is fair.” Simon said.

“I still can’t believe I’m not in that list, though.” Alec said.

“Bro, we are cut from the same cloth, don’t question the Lightwood DNA.” Isabelle said.

“Damn it.”

Magnus put a comforting hand on Alec’s knee. “Don’t worry, sweetheart, you have me by your side, we are never going to die of starvation or poisoning.” Alec chuckled.

Life was good. He had a wonderful family, there was mockery instead of just politeness, and his parents had finally accepted their kid’s partners. Simon, Clary and Magnus were part of the family now, a family that each day seemed to know more mundane stuff. Alec was happy to learn, it seems that the little annoying mundanes weren’t actually annoying and had a lot to offer, and Magnus was just so glad that he could introduce Alec to this culture.

For Max’s disgrace all of his siblings remembered his childhood. He ended up with his hands on his eyes and red ears. Yes, one could be a charming and funny baby but why did all have to remember that time? However, he had seen plenty of photographs. “Clary, have you ever seen a picture with Jace running scared because of a rubber duck that mom was holding?” Everyone, except Jace laughed at that. It was even funnier because Jace had more than 10 years.

“Young man, they are little beasts, and I didn’t know it wasn’t real.”

“By the angel, I knew about that but I didn’t know there was a photo. I need to see it.” Clary said, laughing. “Oh, come on, it’s something I need.” She insisted when Jace just stared at her. Finally, he gave up and started laughing.

Alec smiled and thanked the angel that Max didn’t talk about him and Izzy, they had a lot of embarrassing photos. Why do all moms love to take photos of their children while bathing them? He didn’t get it. But he was glad Max seemed happy with just making fun of Jace.

The night was finally coming to an end. Everyone took their glasses and said cheers. They celebrated being together and being safe. All of them went to the Institute, except for Magnus and Alec. They took a portal home and collapsed on the couch.

“Well, the restaurant was fine, right?” Magnus asked.

Alec smiled. His boyfriend was a perfectionist and even more if all the Lightwoods were involved. It has been a while since they accepted him in the family and yet, the warlock was always trying to make everything perfect. “Of course it was. You are perfect.” Magnus just liked a little of reassurance. He knew the family loved him but still, it was very new to have a family like this. It made his heart flutter.

“Are you tired?” Magnus asked.

“Nope.” Alec answered, even if his body was feeling a little heavy. They had planned a movie night just for the two of them and he wasn’t going to miss it. “Come on, let’s see this movie you’ve been talking all week.”

“It wasn’t all week.”

Alec raised one of the eyebrows that Magnus loved so much. And the warlock went to find the movie. When he was done, he came back to the couch and snuggled close to Alec. The shadowhunter’s head rested on Magnus’s shoulder when the movie began. Magnus waved his hand and a cup of hot chocolate appeared in their hands.

A romantic movie. Sappy, funny and, in Alec’s opinion, amazing. He would be damn if he admits to his fellow shadowhunters that he actually liked the movie, but it was just Magnus and yes, by the end of the movie Alec felt light, happy and so lucky. He laughed when Magnus made jokes about calling him by a nickname. All the options were awful. And he asked Magnus if would’ve liked to be courted the way it was made almost fifty years ago. Magnus’s eyes sparkled when he said he thought it was something beautiful. Perhaps Alec could do something like that for him. For example, he never wrote a love letter, could he do it now? Maybe.

“What are you thinking about, sweetheart?” Alec shook his head. “Nothing.” At Magnus’s incredulous expression he continued. “I was thinking that I really liked the movie, and how much I love you.”

“Aren’t you adorable? Attacking me with that sweetness of you, it should be illegal.” Magnus kissed his nose.

“Me? Adorable?”

“Yes, mighty, brave and bold shadowhunters can be adorable, Alexander.”

“All right, but you are adorable too.”

Magnus thought, not for the first time, how lucky he was. If someone had told him ten years ago that a shadowhunter would find him adorable and be his boyfriend he would have laughed and declared them out of their mind, and yet here he was, feeling happier than he ever had. Magnus kissed him slowly. Alec smiled into the kiss, making Magnus smile too. The warlock really enjoyed all the kind of kisses they shared, because behind them there was love. It was Magnus who broke the moment.

“Next time you are picking the restaurant.”

“What? No.”

“You’re telling me that after all this time we’ve been together you didn’t learn anything from me.”

“If I recall, you were the one who just two hours ago was asking if the restaurant was fine.”

Magnus kissed Alec’s lips, silencing him.

“Just a warning: next time we go to the institute I’m so going to find all the pictures of you as a child.”

“You’ve seen plenty of them.”

“I said all of them.”

“I’m almost sure you indeed had seen all, it’s not like we had tons of pictures.”

“It’s for science.”

“Oh, yeah?”

“Yes. And hey, I don’t know why you are so afraid. We’ve seen the pictures together.”

“I’m glad Max didn’t tell more of the stories behind the pictures.”

“Why? I’m almost sure Clary and Simon already know enough.”

Alec chuckled. “More than they need to. I need to keep the mystery.”

“Shadowhunters.” Magnus said, as if that explained it all. Perhaps it did.

“Shut up, mister ‘I survived the Big Bang’.”

“I’ve never said that. And I am not that old.”

“And yet, you go around telling people that you’re 500, 600, even 800 years.”

“You know what? Once, my shadowhunter boyfriend told me something about ‘mystery’, maybe he was right?” Alec smirked. He loved the teasing. He loved the playful relationship they had. The seriousness they could have. The competitiveness. The laughs. He loved everything. He loved Magnus.

“He is always right.”

“Mm. He is also funny.”

Alec snorted. “He sounds like an awesome guy.”

“Yeah, he is. I’m so lucky.”

“I think he is the lucky one.”

Magnus pecked his lips. Alec barely suppressed a yawn. Magnus laughed.

“Let’s go to bed, darling.”

Magnus got up from the couch and offered his hand to Alec. Alec let himself to be led to the bedroom. Sleep had taken over Alec’s body. He sat on the bed and watched his boyfriend undress. He liked that Magnus didn’t use always his magic. If he had time, he would do things like every other human. Alec’s lips were forming a little smile, from the moment he saw Magnus get dressed for dinner he thought he looked breathtaking. His cobalt suit along with the black shirt had him sneaking glances at him all night. Oh, how much he liked his man in a suit. His man. Every time he said that was as good as the first time, he was so happy that finally he could say that out loud. It was amazing. When Magnus finished he came to see his boyfriend.

“I am the one who’s getting you out of that suit, am I right?”

Alec’s smile told him everything.

He exaggerated his movements, that had the Nephilim smirking. When he was done he helped Alec to climb on the bed and covered them with the sheets. He took his boyfriend in his arms and Alec just snuggled closer to him while humming.

“Good night, Magnus. Love you.”

“Sleep well, darling. Love you too.”

Magnus kissed his temple and smelled his Alexander’s hair. He was finally at home and he knew this life with Alec was his happy place.

After contemplating for a while, decided to embark on attempting to translate the novel of ALSB! Tbh I’m pretty terrified because it’s 60+ chapters of commitment and I’m not sure if I can even last five……….. Eeps, no promises!!

Also I’m still working on improving sentence structure and arranging the english translation in coherent sentences when doing translations, please do bear with my being a total utter novice ):

Chapter 1

Comrade Old Chen, aka my dad, retired officially this year in February. Old Chen who had been working tirelessly for his entire life couldn’t sit still after staying at home for half a month, and coincidentally the Senior Citizens Club in the county was recruiting members, so he went. Once he went, he realised that he at fifty-plus years of age was considered to be youthful and the backbone in the Senior Citizens Club where the average age was seventy years. Hence, Old Chen’s enthusiasm that had laid dormant for a long while was set aflame. Everyday, he would ride his bicycle and go to the Senior Citizens Club to organise entertainment activities for the elderly. That wave of enthusiasm was an entire time of burning passion.

Except that before his passion had burnt time, time/his years (on in age) first made a display of strength and authority. He, that old man, while climbing a stool to hang up an event banner, stepped off into air and fell.

I received my mum’s phone call just as I was standing by the main road looking at the advertisment signboards, and was so frightened that my whole body was covered in cold sweat though it was a really hot day. Even though I was always being beaten by Old Chen when I was small, and I had also thought of beating Old Chen when I grew up, but I really did love Old Chen.

While rushing to the hospital, I was crying while long-windedly telling the taxi driver about all the good things about my dad, till the 7-feet-tall robust-looking taxi driver was extremely moved. The whole journey, he was stepping down on the accelerator to its maximum extent; when I paid the fee he took the initiative to round down the fee. He said, “Girl, remember my car’s license plate number, XXXX, next time, please don’t flag down my car anymore, I have an extremely long-winded wife and mother at home, so once I hear someone chatter on I tremble. Please forgive me, and I hope your dad recovers soon.”

……

When I reached the hospital, crying, my mum so happened to be paring apples while scolding my dad. “An old skeleton like you, the backbone?! If you fall one more time I’ll directly push you to be burnt, you can upgrade from being the backbone to being bone ashes.”

I clutched the doorframe, tears pooling in my eyes. “Mum, how is Dad?”

Mum lifted her head and took a look at me. “Tch, take back your tears. What are you crying for? I raised you up with a hand full of faeces and a hand full of urine (NOTE: meaning to endure all kinds of hardship), not for you to have a hand full of snot and a hand full of tears the moment you encounter some problem.”

I took back my tears, and went to greet that old fellow who had been bullied long-term. “Dad, are you alright?”

My dad anxiously gazed at the apple in mum’s hand. “Not alright. Your mum has pared three apples already, and has not even given me one to eat.”

I saw that I wouldn’t be able to get an answer about what exactly had happened from their mouths, so I simply picked up the thermos bottle and said, “I’m going to get some hot water.”

I carried the thermos bottle and made a beeline for the inquiry counter, not caring about my mum who was shouting at me from behind, “This damned child, the bottle is full!”

Perhaps my appearance was overly malevolent, for the nurse quickly got a doctor to come over. The doctor, with zero emotion on his face, related my dad’s circumstances to me. He said that my dad had fallen on his waist, and his backbone was now pressing against a nerve – basically that my dad needed to be operated on, and that I was to prepare 30000 RMB.

I asked some more questions about the specific details of the situation. The doctor looked at me and said, “Even if I told you, you wouldn’t understand. Just prepare the money and leave everything else to us doctors.”

I asked again, “Then when can we do the operation?”

He said impatiently, “Join the queue, when it reaches your turn, we’ll do it.”

I was itching to spit a large mouthful of thick phlegm on his face, then tell him, “I’m sorry, I have tuberculosis.”

But I couldn’t do that, I could only fish out a few hundred RMB from my pocket, and submissively shoved the money towards him. “Then I’ll have to trouble you to take care…”

He glared at me and pushed away the money. “What are you doing! I can understand your feelings as a family member of the patient, but this is not in line with the rules! If you do not feel reassured, I’ll just find some free time to explain the situation to you in greater detail.”

I was beside myself with guilt, thinking that I was really gauging the stomach of a gentleman with the heart of a vile person (NOTE: meaning to view the actions/intentions of a great person/gentleman through the lens of one’s own stingy/mean/evil worldview), the doctor was just naturally ill-tempered. Just as I was profoundly examining my own personal integrity, that doctor turned around to leave. Before he left, he lifted his chin and gave me a look. I pondered for a long time whether he was cramping or if there was another meaning behind that action, till I finally copied him and lifted my own chin, upon which I understood – there was a CCTV installed on the wall……

I was just about to ask the nurse where the office of that doctor was when my phone rang. When I took out my phone and had a look, my heartbeat sped up like stepping on the accelerator while going downhill, I almost wanted to go to the cardiology department and register (to see a doctor).

Jiang Chen, my ex-boyfriend.

Trembling, I reverently answered the phone. “Hello?”

After saying hello for a long while, I could only hear a bunch of assorted random noises. It seemed like he had accidentally pressed his phone. I was about to hang the phone up when I heard a sweet female voice. She was saying, “Doctor, my chest hurts.”

It was only then that I recalled – Jiang Chen was a doctor, and he reportedly was a little famous now too. I hung up the phone and agonised for ages, finally deciding that rather than staying here experiencing the dark side of my home country’s medical industry, I might as well transfer to the hospital where Jiang Chen was. At least on account of how I had peeled thousands of tea eggs (NOTE: a common Chinese food - tea-infused eggs!) for him back in the day, he more or less had to show some consideration, right……

When I returned, I told my mum about this matter. She asked, “Is Jiang Chen that child that you had a case of puppy love with?”

Uh… the points you remember sure are unfathomable.

Mum asked again, “If we transfer to the hospital he’s at, will he help? What I’m saying is, do the two of you still have mutual affection?”

That sure was a question that hit the nail on the head. I stammered, “He definitely will help… It’s just that…”

“Just what?”

“It’s just that this seems a little like ‘that which scissors cannot sever, and, sorted out, is tangled again.’” (NOTE: a line from a poem “Crows cawing at night” by Song dynasty poet, Li Yu. Refers to one being unable to make a clean break, allowing feelings/emotions to fester. Translation for this line taken from “A Book of Chinese Verse” by A. R. Davis)

The old lady scoffed disdainfully. “Stop dragging literature in when talking to me, if you can’t sever it, shave it off completely! You will contact him now, and get your father to transfer hospitals tomorrow. I cannot endure these bastard doctors here anymore.”

I was originally depending on my mum to tell me with great affection, “Child, we must have backbone. We won’t provoke ex-boyfriends.” Sure enough, I had overestimated my mum.

Jiang Chen didn’t express any astonishment when he answered my phone call. I guess doctors are all like that, having seen and grown accustomed to great winds and waves (NOTE: meaning turmoil, dangers and difficulties). Corpses and internal organs all don’t scare him, how could he possibly be scared by me, an ex-girlfriend?

Stammering, I told him about the circumstances, and lastly said, “Can my dad transfer to your hospital?”

“Sure.” His reply was forthcoming and direct, causing me to be too embarrassed to bring up the matter of me peeling tea eggs for him.

He then said, “Prepare all the items, I’ll get a vehicle to fetch your dad to transfer hospitals right away.”

After that he was silent for a moment, before asking me, “Are you alright?”

Alright.

After hanging up the phone, I clutched my chest and leaned against the corridor wall, panting heavily. Beside me, a young nurse came over to support me. “Is anything the matter?”

I shook my head, feeling extremely gratified that I had at long last seen a ray of humanity in this hospital.

She continued speaking. “Who were you giving a call to on the phone just now? It seems like you are going to transfer hospitals? Which hospital management do you know? Can you introduce me to go there? I still have one more month till the end of my internship, and I haven’t found a hospital to hire me, can you help me, my grades are actually really good, it’s just that I am unwilling to sleep with the hospital directors…”

Faced with her pestering, I was truly at a loss, and could only say, “Actually the person I called was the cleaner of Centre Hospital, I agreed to sleep with him before he agreed to help me ask if it was possible to transfer hospitals.”

In order for him to practise and achieve a handwriting that would allow him to evade responsibility even if he wrote a wrong prescription, I had once forced him to copy my handwriting, but regretfully, he never managed to learn the true essence of my handwriting.

Jiang Chen handled the discharge and hospitalisation procedures all by himself. My mum and I had nothing to do, so the both of us, each with an apple in hand, squatted at the hospital entrance and chatted.

Mum said, “That young lad is worthy of having me watch him grow up, he’s really not bad.”

I expressed my contempt for her shameless conduct in attributing that young lad being not bad to her watching him grow up.

She then said, “Such a decent good, how did you miss out on him back in the day? It was clearly almost about to succeed.”

I took a bite of my apple. “Dad is all alone in the ambulance and bored, you should go and eat an apple for him to watch.”

Mum gave a long sigh and diligently ran towards the car. As she ran, she shouted, “Old fogey, your daughter made me come and eat apples for you to watch.”

Jiang Chen so happened to see this scene as he came out holding receipts of all sizes. Smiling, he looked at me. “You sure are filial.”

I raised my head to look at him. He was standing in front of me, half-stooped and lowering his head to look at me. His hair ends drooping low were bathed in a soft glow in the morning light. He smiled at me easily (NOTE: referring to ease that comes with much experience), with a deep dimple squeezed in his left cheek, as if it was just yesterday that we had a meal and watched a movie together.

I averted my gaze. This was a dimple of great evil. Back in the day, my little heart of affection was intoxicated precisely by this dimple. Thinking back now, I just felt that I had been defrauded by that tiny pit on his face.

Ever since I could remember, Jiang Chen’s existence was as matter-of-fact and expected as the electric pole at the entrance of the alleyway. He stayed in the building opposite my house, and was the mayor’s son. He was class monitor, had good looks, could play the piano, could write calligraphy, had good grades, and spoke pleasant-sounding Putonghua/Mandarin.

Television and novels would term a boy and girl who lived near each other since young like us as green plums and toy horse (NOTE: a Chinese idiom meaning childhood sweethearts), in addition, this was generally divided into two categories – the first was the type that were kind to and loved each other, with the two people being as close as siblings, scooping out a hornet’s nest together and getting stung by hornets together, stealing sweet potatoes together and getting beaten up together, till they suddenly look back and realise that their friendship had long since slowly progressed to love; the other type was those who hate each other, with the two of them fighting each other, tit for tat, where seeing the other from afar would make one just itch to rush forward and bite the other, where once one seized the opportunity, they would pull out the other’s bicycle gas valve, till they grew up and suddenly realise – ah, so this is love.

Unfortunately, Jiang Chen and I were neither of the above, for an endlessly long time, he and I were just neighbours who stayed opposite each other. Everyday, he would play his piano, and I would read my Chibi Maruko Chan comic with great relish. Occasionally if I forgot the contents of my homework, I would go and press his house’s doorbell. He was always very mocking, and would say impatiently, “Why didn’t you remember it yourself?” Perhaps it was because I was begging him for a favour, so I never bickered with him. But then again it’s also entirely possible that it’s due to me not liking to bicker with people since young. I as a person am extraordinarily unperturbed.

During the summer between Junior 2 and Junior 3, our class secretly organised an outdoor cooking activity after exams behind our teacher’s back. During the outdoor cooking, Jiangchen and I were allocated to wash the sweet potatos. There were 40 people in the class and we bought 44 sweet potatoes. Jiang Chen washed the first four, then stood to one side entertaining himself by skipping stones.

I squatted by the lakeside vigorously suppressing my rage as I washed the sweet potatoes. Just as my anger was rising while I was washing, a small slab of stone landed in front of me, splashing my whole face with water. When I raised my head however, Jiang Chen had assumed an air of nonchalance, as if nothing had ever happened. “How much does it cost?” Jae sighed, struggling to keep up with Brian’s excited pace.

“I think you just have to buy a drink,” Brian nodded. He didn’t even have to look back to know how unenthusiastic Jae was about the situation.

Then again, it took a lot for Jae to get actually enthused when it came to Brian’s ideas.

“But like...is there a price range for the drink?” Jae questioned. “Or can I survive off of cheap beer for most of the night? I hear they have Pabst for a dollar a glass-”

“Jae, I think you’re hipster is showing. Does anyone actually drink that anymore?” Brian chuckled, turning the corner at top speed.

“No, my broke is showing,” Jae grumbled. “But that didn’t stop you from making me get out of bed.”

“It was seven in the evening!” Brian gasped. “I wasn’t sure if you were going to bed really early or waking up really late.”

“Plot twist,” Jae sighed. “Both, I was doing both.”

“Well, I’m happy to see you were so happy to join me,” Brian muttered.

“Can I live tweet this nightmare?” Jae grumbled. “Hashtag someone please save me from the kang.”

“I knew I should have taken Wonpil,” Brian sighed, shaking his head.

Jae gasped and immediately halted his steps. He reached up and dramatically grasped his t-shirt above his chest. “You take that back. You take that back right now Brian Kang.”

Brian paused as well and spun around to look at his older member. He rolled his eyes and grabbed at Jae’s wrist. “I’m sorry, now come on, we’re going to be late.”

“Are you going to introduce yourself to people as Brian?” Jae asked, dragging his feet. “Or Younghyun? Or Young K? Oh please tell me you’re introducing yourself as Young K.”

“Why did I do this? Why did I do this to myself?” Brian whispered. “Invite Jae, you said. It would be fun, you said.”

“I am the wingman of your dreams, Young K,” Jae snickered. “I was made for this moment.”

“You know you can’t be a wingman when we’re speed dating,” Brian grumbled. “We’re going to be on our own.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Jae said, furrowing his brows as he paused again. “So you’re telling me...we can’t be a tag team duo?”

“This isn’t wrestling,” Brian groaned. “I assumed you knew what speed dating was.”

“I mean...I’ve never actually done it,” Jae hummed. His eyes were wide as he searched Brian’s face. “I don’t have enough dad jokes for this.”

“Time to unlock the emergency vault,” Brian nodded. “Cause we’re here.”

You readjusted in the uncomfortable bar stool and cringed. A solitary bead of sweat was cascading down the back of your knee. It caused you to shiver, and you let a light groan escape your lips. It was a sure sign that you were nervous.

You would be lying if you said you hadn’t been at least a little bit curious when your friend had brought up the idea of speed dating. You had both been single since before you came to Seoul, so in theory, it made sense. You still hadn’t expected for her to sign you both up for the nearest speed dating event she could find once your discussion had ended.

You had always planned on living intentionally. You would never find love if you didn’t get out there and actually open yourself to it, so here you sat, a nervous mess at a night club in the middle of Gangnam.

“Hello and how are you!” the speed dating organizer called over the hum of conversation buzzing around the room.

You looked up nervously from the cocktail you were prodding at and toward your friend who had quite literally drug you here. She was smiling brightly as she tossed her perfectly styled hair over her shoulder. If she wasn’t your friend, you would have hated her. She looked like she had her life completely together without a single nerve in sight. She caught your eye as you analyzed her and winked, shimmying her shoulders as a signal for you to calm down.

“Ladies and gentleman, welcome to our Seoul singles event!”

The crowd that had gathered around cheered and began to clap. The organizer grinned as she looked around the room and nodded. “Yes! I know we’re all very excited. Let me lay down how this works! Each of you have been given a sheet of paper. Write down who you are meeting with, circle the names of the people you feel you connected with the most! At the end of the experience, we’ll take your papers and match you up accordingly. You will only be given each other’s contact information if it was a mutual match! You’ll be emailed your matches within the next few days, and it will be your chance to contact each other then!”

The group of daters cheered again to signal their understanding. You, however, couldn’t make a sound. You looked down to your name tag, firmly placed on your right chest pocket. You made sure to adjust it, even though it was already perfectly visible. You took a deep breath and nodded to yourself. It was healthy to step out of your comfort zone...wasn’t it?

“You have five minutes with each date!” the organizer continued. “At the end of the five minutes, I will hit the buzzer and you will move on to the next date! You will have ten dates in total, understood?”

Just shy of an hour talking to strangers. Just what you wanted to do on a Saturday night.

“And...begin!”

“You look like a reasonable person,” the next man sighed as he placed his beer glass down on the small table separating the two of you. You looked up to his name tag, albeit upside down. You were careful to scrawl his name on the appropriate line of your date sheet. Jae. You only had one more line beneath his at this point and could finally relax. You could see the light.

“Um...thanks?” you hummed, tilting your head. This was a strange opener.

You had been sitting for longer than your butt would appreciate and began to fidget in your chair. You had heard just about every opening line or pick up in the book at this point and were exasperated with the thought of having to sit through ten more minutes of this.

“Frankly, this beer tastes really bad,” he continued. “And five minutes is not the ideal amount of time to get to know someone.”

“Agreed,” you nodded, stirring at what was left of your own drink.

“Do you like pizza?” Jae asked, focusing intently on your face.

You blinked in surprise and slowly began to nod. “I’ve been known to.”

“What about puppies? Do you like puppies?” he asked.

“Who doesn’t like puppies?” you whispered, furrowing your brows.

“Satan probably,” Jae nodded. “So I came here with my friend Brian, you know, the guy who sat down before me?”

“Right,” you confirmed, still not quite following his line of thought.

“I also see that you did not circle his name,” he nodded. “Now, if I could be so bold, what do you say we blow this popsickle stand?”

“...go on,” you hummed, looking casually over your shoulder. You eyed the organizer walking around with her buzzer. You then looked toward your oncoming date at the table over and sighed.

You readjusted your gaze to look back at Jae. A grin began to tug at the corner of his mouth before he bit his bottom lip. He scooted closer to the table and by extension, closer to you. He looked you in the eyes as he dropped his voice. “So there’s a pet shop a couple blocks down from here. We can pet all the puppies we want until they close. And right next door is this little Italian joint that has subpar pizza. I want to take you there.”

Your eyes grew wide as you stared at him, unsure if he was extremely confident or batshit crazy.

But he was pretty gorgeous. Your eyes gazed over his lightly colored hair, gracefully disheveled as it fell over his forehead. His dark eyes were covered by large frames, but they made his face even more interesting. His cheekbones and jawline would probably slice you open if you touched them, and his smile was absolutely to die for.

Was it wrong to trust him just because he had a pretty face?

“I get it,” Jae nodded. “I can see in your eyes. Why go with this guy? He could be a serial killer. Granted, his hands are entirely too feminine and soft for any sort of homicide, but I still don’t know his life. He offers me puppies and food and the next thing you know, he’ll be luring me into his passenger van, never to be seen again...

...but then again, if we both bounce now, I can save you from the special kind of terrible homeboy next to me offers. I’ve heard him tell a story about how he saved some orphans from a fire about seven times now, and I’m pretty sure that shit is made up. So help me, help you.”

You grew anxious as you looked up again, narrowing your eyes to see that there was only a little over a minute left of your conversation. You looked back down to Jae’s face when he wiggled his brows, patiently waiting for an answer.

“Have you shopped this idea around to the other girls you’ve sat with?” you asked, finally finding your voice.

“They already had their questions lined up,” he sighed. “It would have been rude of me to interrupt...

Plus none of them had eyes as incredible as yours.”

“Do you think hitting on me will seal the deal?” you chuckled.

“At the very least I thought it would maybe speed up the process,” Jae grinned. “As we have about fifty seconds left. So what do you say? Ready to get banned from any more speed dating events?”

“I...well...” you hummed. You looked toward your friend, looking pretty intimate with Jae’s friend Brian. You were amazed at how close she could manage to get with someone in a manner of five minutes, but he looked entranced. You looked to Jae and bit your lip, slowly allowing yourself to nod.

“Let’s get out of here.”

#48 The Age Gap Part 2 (Harry Styles)

I feel I should have increased the gap, but what the hell!

Word Count: 2,000

Summary: Harry is a younger guy, and well the girl he likes is unsure.

PART 1

We did end up heavily making out in our little corner that evening. The only reason we stopped was that my phone rang and it was time to go home. He did say he hoped to see me again, and I spent the rest of the night wondering if I should call him because I was the older one or if he should call me because he was the guy. In the morning, Sophia and Vicky saw me with suspicious smirks knowing my escapades of the previous night, and I couldn’t help but tell them to shut up. They rolled their eyes.

My first class was spent analysing if I was immature and maybe sexist? To think that the guy has to call, how stupid was that? Why can’t I? Then, the reason that it has only been a few hours, well it has been 12 hours, but wasn’t that too early? I didn’t want to look desperate. But, I was desperate so, I asked Vicky for his number. She did send it, after teasing me a couple times. But, he called me before I could.

“Hello,” I asked. “Who is this?”

“So, umm,” that heavy voice, I recognised it instantly, “so, I spent the last few hours analysing whether it was too early to call you, or that if I should wait for yours, or you know if I should just go ahead because I enjoyed a club evening after a long time.”

“Really?” I asked, smiling to myself.

“Yes really, but I realised the real reason for calling you,” He said.

“And what is that?”

“I still gotta prove that younger guys are better!” He laughed. “I have so many points! And, I have to convince you!”

“Yeah, I do need to be convinced,” I hummed.

“So, when do your classes get over?”

“In an hour, yours?”

“Mine just did. Meet me near the Museum in an hour n half? I’ll take you in, I know you haven’t been in,” He said.

“How do you know that?” I asked, surprised. Museum as a first date, this guy was playing my cards right.

“I am a lawyer, I do my research.”

I rushed to the loo as soon as I finished so, I could fix myself. Trying the best I could, I calmed myself and gave myself a pep talk. “Get it together!”

The museum wasn’t far away, but I didn’t want to be late. It was never nice to be late. I waited near the steps looking around if he was there. “Up here,” I heard his voice. He stood if a baggy white sweater and those torn jeans, pulling the museum door wide open.

“Hey,” I said, as he kept his hand on my waist, taking me inside.

“You look pretty,” He said, kissing my cheek.

“You look pretty as well,” I smiled. “So, where are we going first?” I asked.

“Oh, first we are going to a secret place,” he took my hand, and we walked a while before he stopped in front of a huge door. He pushed it open, and I found myself staring wide at the huge wall of the aquarium with all kinds of fishes swimming in. I walked in front and kept my palm on the glass. It was the backside of the actual exhibit in the front.

“This is beautiful,” I looked at him. He stood with a bottle of orange juice and two wine glasses. I looked behind him, and I couldn’t believe he’d do that for me. There was a rug he had placed in the room, with a basket of food, and a plate of grapes.

“I realised that we drank yesterday, so I wanted to keep it light,” He said, taking my hand.

“This is amazing,” the only light in the room was from the aquarium and the three candles Harry had lit. It was really pretty. “Orange is my favourite juice,” I said, as he smiled, his dimples in shaking his head.

“So, we have homemade sandwiches. I made them, I make amazing sandwiches. We have grapes, and we have ice cream. I’m sorry, it’s not too fancy, but it’s month end and I-”

“It’s perfect. You couldn’t have done this better. I’m all yours,” his smile just widened, and I swore he blushed.

“Sandwich,” he handed it to me.

“Thank you,” he could make a mean sandwich. I had to agree, I almost moaned. “You should be a chef!”

“That was my second option,” He said. “I was talking about benefits on call.”

“Oh yeah, dating younger men,” I said, “You’re two years younger-”

“One and a half, but benefits,” he said, “date me, a younger guy because we are learners. Whatever you say, we learn and try keeping an open mind, and you know, learn from your experience.”

“Aah, I see, so I’m like this guide for life,” I said, sipping my drink.

“Exactly, the showing of the ropes can happen both ways,” he nodded.

“But what about sex?” I asked. “It’s a serious thing. Older women – more experience, and I have none.”

“But, you see I have experience. And, this just means that we can learn and become masters by knowing each part of each other which an older guy won’t get because you know, they want to experience and they’re unwilling to try,” He was calming all my fears in one go, and taking it all humorous way.

“Then, us young men love to impress. We will always keep it up,” he stood on his knees, “and you’ll be the centre of my attention,” he looked straight into my eyes, kept one finger on my chin, and kissed me softly. “we are less jaded, so not many bad relationships.”

“Wow, so many benefits, but what I don’t see is why would you want to date me?” I asked. He was hot, he could have anyone.

“I like you.” He said, simply. “Isn’t that enough?”

“Are the grapes for me?” I asked, looking away.

“The first time I saw you was in Dr Keller’s class. I came to meet this girl I was seeing from your college at that time, about five months ago? Yeah, anyway, I was roaming around, and I saw this girl stand in the centre of the circle, and tell a story about a young woman warrior pretending to be a man to protect her life for half her life. She shifted it to the importance of telling stories, and how it connects us across cultures to each other. She did it so passionately. I kept thinking about her for the entire time until I saw her again with one of my friends. I forgot about how I was dumped that day after I was cheated on. I am very committed? I don’t know why I say it like it’s a bad thing, but I am and, I don’t find people like that anymore.” I looked at him, my eyes wide in surprise.

“Anyway, I don’t know. Hearing that girl speak with so much passion just made me forget everything. So, I finished my classes every day for the next week, to come to your college and wait for her to speak. I never joined in because I just wanted to hear her speak with that passion and, she did every day. It was a new story every day. I remember all of them – the little boy with the lost puppy, the tech guy who dies, it was all beautiful and so addictive to just listen to her speak. The next day I came, and the workshop was over, and I couldn’t find her again...”

“Why didn’t you come meet me before?” I asked.

“I didn’t know you, and I was Sophia’s friend, and I knew about her roommate. Sophia speaks about people she loves and their problems when she is drunk, and she talked about you. I didn’t know how to reach you.”

“You feel very straight out of a book to me,” I said, looking at him.

“I’ve heard that before,” he gave a sad smile. “Come let me show you around...clear this later.” We walked through the halls of history, paying attention to the artefacts and Harry telling me a little story he knew about the said person. I felt that he was giving up on this. His face was a bit sadder, not that happy when he started off. I think I gave him the vibe that this won’t work out between us. I wondered if it could. As much as I was mature, I wanted to be taken care of as well at times. But, can’t we do that both to each other? With no said compulsion. Our age wasn’t that far apart, and we could gel with each of our friends. And, as much as I analysed it, the warmth in my heart of rightness at the moment said enough about how I felt. He had marketed himself to me. Put himself on a platter, in a way. I had nothing to lose. We stood in a small room, spacious enough for three people, looking at the painting, “to be honest, I don’t think this is as old. They say that the original was stolen and I kind of believe it...”

“I think I see it,” I said, “the benefits of dating a younger guy and everything. I think we have analysed it well, and you’ve presented a brilliant case. But, I have to tell you that I am very headstrong. I don’t like people who act entitled. I can cook, I cook alright. I think I’ll be amazing at sex, at least I think so. I get into this phase where I take a step back and start shutting down as soon I get very close to someone, so you have to know when we get to that phase, you just have to hold me and kiss me and stay, and I’ll come right back..”

“I’ll take you...” he said, with a nod.

“I wanted to say the same thing.” I said, “Now, that we have established that the younger way is to go for me, I’d like to take you as well, and –” He pushed me against the wall before I could get another word out. I smiled, his lips on mine, wrapping my hand around his neck, and getting slightly on my toes to kiss him properly.

“Hey, you two, not in here!” we heard the security guard yell.

“Fuck,” Harry giggled and took me out of the room. We sneaked into the same room, and I helped him wrap up.

“How did you get in here?” I asked.

“Oh, my dad’s the manager,” he said.

“Does he know we are here?” I asked stopping. It would be so weird.

“Yeah, he knows I borrowed it. But, I promised him no sex.”

“Oh shit, this would be such a perfect location,” I whined, sarcastically.

“Really?” He stopped, licking his lips. “You’re joking.” He pouted, realising the truth. “Don’t tease me.”

“We could sneak in one day...” I smirked as we entered the maintenance hallway.

“We are breaking most rules anyway,” he said dropping the rug and his bag and kissing me again, against the wall.

Now at the end of this year my car has depreciated to 1500.00. It makes no sense as a lot of people have licenses for ID only and do not have a car (because they aren't allowed or can't drive): By law if you have a driver's license you are supposed to carry insurance whether you own a vehicle or not. It's usually called non-owner's liability coverage. Because of this law they would be able to suspend your license if your company cannot provide proof that you have coverage.
