The basic tldr of this setting is What If back during Bigger Longer & Uncut, Kenny's wish to change everything back to how it was before the Canada vs. America war didn't completely cancel out the prophecy about Satan reigning over earth... but rather just delayed it. And now, in modern day South Park (post-Nobody Got Cereal?) Satan's dead... so when an accident while Terrance and Phillip are on tour causes their demise in Colorado, there's nobody even ruling over the hell that breaks loose, it's just pure chaos.

Why is the south park subreddit like... that? I suppose this is more of a rhetorical question, ik the real answer is "South Park is one of the most popular cartoons of all time, so naturally it has a lot of casual fans, who tend to flock to Reddit" but also like. C'mon now. 80% of posts are just quotes. Then yu see someone ask a question there or try to start a discussion or share their art and at least half of the comments are just quotes and gifs?? Speaking of art, most of the fanart posted there gets ignored/downvoted to hell for some reason. To be fair, I'll give the redditor fans some credit where credit is due: They put into perspective how obsessively invested the more fandom-y fans are in sp. Every few months I see a post on there that's like "Wait, Craig has BLACK hair??" or a "Ermmm who's that?" caption on a screenshot of Terrance Mephesto. Fascinsting

I don’t know how I feel about the songs in HH, they’re catchy and the vocal performances are good, but the lyrics are really bad and don’t move the story forward, happy day in hell just starts out of nowhere and doesn’t tell us anything new about Charlie’s dream that she hasn’t said over and over in first 10 minutes. Charlie repeats herself so many times in the first episode it’s like she’s a broken record. We’re introduced to the world building and town in hell but the problem is the storybook already told us about hell. If they wanted to make Lilith a powerful presence there should’ve been missing posters or statues of Lilith if she’s was the one to rule hell and empower it with song or even news outlets about Lilith but there isn’t. Also none of these locations ever come up or is important to the story, Charlie forgets about cannibal town and she has to be reminded what it is. The princess of hell whose been living thousands of years doesn’t know about cannibal town?

I was rewatching South Park big and longer the song Mountain Town immediately gives us synopsis of the story and what’s gonna transpire, with the boys getting ready to watch a movie with the moms singing about how South Park is so great because it’s isolated and redneck from city life that their boys are “safe” and innocent while the boys sing how their parents don’t teach them anything and singing merrily how crappy South Park is and the highlight of their life is watching Terrance and Philip. Cartman gets punished and installed a chip that shocks him if he curses for singing Kyle’s mom is a bitch and as a result of the song the towns plans on installing chips in all the kids. you can be a fan of Broadway and musicals but they doesn’t make you an expert on songwriting or storytelling especially if all your doing is just making animatic mv thumbnail for the songs

The idea of how musicals work is one I realized I had to tackle in my essay(s) around the music, and needing to build the concept of how and why musicals have such a distinct formula was necessary for any of my points to land.

It's doubly hard when you are writing out these ideas rather than explaining with examples that people can hear or see right in front of them. Being a written medium, I can't suddenly cut away to a sound, or an example. Being a tumblr blog, I am limited in the amount of media I can use per post.

So I can only hope that my attempt at explaining why musicals are comprehensible to those who lack a robust understanding of musical theory or opera.

“Who is Hollis Robinson?” You asked, the name completely unfamiliar to you. “The boat clearly belonged to her and Groff clearly killed her and planted evidence, to no surprise whatsoever.”

Sarah frowned slightly. “I’m pretty sure she’s in business with Rafe. He said something about Goat Island and… and this development investment?”

“Goat Island?” Cleo repeated the name, laughing slightly. “Creative, I guess.”

“Wait, didn’t the Genrettes own Goat Island? Passed down from generations?” Kiara pointed out, her eyes moving from Pope to JJ. 

Pope nodded. “They read the will the other day, when Cleo and I went to clarify information on the rezoning. It’s being turned into a protected state park, since there’s no living Genrette left.”

“Except there is…” You trailed off, gaze dropping down to the boy in your arms who gained everyone’s attention at the moment. He shifted uncomfortably with the attention. “JJ?”

He shook his head slightly, practically shrinking into your body as much as possible. You frowned, letting your head fall to rest against his and continuing to hold him closely.

“We need to get out of here. Get off this island,” Cleo directed. She was no doubt itching for another chance to avenge Terrance, and going after the crown would give her that opportunity. 

“I mean, I could be down for a little Moroccan vacay,” Kie added with a shrug. Her fingers picked at the hem of her shorts, something she did when she was nervous and you didn’t blame her for feeling that way.

“We’re gonna need a bigger boat. Hell, a ship maybe. You know how far Morocco is? Way, way, way out there.”

Les Mis ramblings

I saw the Arena tour of Les Mis back in September and basically spent the last several months down a 19 Century France rabbit hole… with no end in sight. Including reading through the 1810 Penal Code.

I’ve wanted to see Les Mis for years ever since I fell down a Terrance Mann rabbit hole watching the Dresden Files in 2007 (points vaguely at my header) and listened to any thing of his I could get my ears/hands on. Unfortunately the West End isn’t just down the road or an affordable jaunt on my limited budget and the one time I did get to go to London the sibling won out in the Phantom v Les Mis debate. I have seen the film and a couple of the staged concerts and bits on youtube. 

Anyway in October 2023 I got asked ‘Did I fancy seeing Les Mis on tour since it was coming to Belfast?’ in September 2024 for my early 2024 birthday and hell yeah. 

Tickets were booked and I realised it wasn’t the show and assumed it was going to be a concert version so was a little bit disappointed :( Then casting was announced and I knew mum would love to see Michael Ball and Alfie Boe so another point in its favour, well until we checked dates and realised we had booked the sole evening performance they weren’t doing in Belfast. 

However, and it is a very big however, Killian Donnelly and Bradley Jaden were wonderful as Valjean and Javert and they really knocked it out of the park. Personally to be honest I think we got the better end of the stick though I'd still like to see Alfie Bow at some point. I was spellbound the whole way through and really didn't notice the time flying.

I did laugh when Raymond Walsh opened his gob as Grantaire and hundreds of heads all swung to stare at him with the clear single thought of “He’s local!”

Just one problem now I’ve seen it I want to go again and again but can’t so have taken to Instalking about half the cast…. whoops.
