“there you go,” robin breathes, gently settling your back to the rocks. “we’re safe here.” 

you swallow hard, the tang smell of blood on your drenched t-shirt makes your head dizzy, the murky air around gets harder to breathe and the voice of the horrifying creatures around adds more to your anxiousness. “we’re not,” your eyes flutter close as a tear escapes to your sweaty cheeks, “not while we’re stuck in here.”

robin lifts your shirt, being careful to not to hurt you while taking it off. you see how her  face scrunches at the sight. her face mirrors how bad it is, even though she tries her best to hide it. “you should leave me behind,” you breathe out, shaking as the cold hits your  exposed skin covered in blood. “ i’ll slow you guys down.”

you knew from the moment you jumped to the water right after robin that this wasn’t a good idea. you knew you couldn’t live with the guilt of letting her behind. she was your closest friend, you couldn’t just let her jump to the death. not without you. now you can not let yourself be a burden to her.

Reviews for 3 New Adult Novels

So I got a little bored and decided to take a short break from YA fantasy. I spent a good amount of time browsing the Kindle Unlimited catalog (I very recently found out that even if you don’t pay for Kindle Unlimited these books are still much cheaper than others. It’s like $3-4 for a book compared to the usual 9.99. Incredible). During my search, I came across the New Adult genre (seriously - why is Kindle Unlimited FILLED with NA books?) and because I’ve been needing to obsess over some steamy romance lately I picked up two of the most angsty NA books I could find plus one that simply had stellar reviews on Goodreads. And then I proceeded to finish all three books within about a week. To top it off, two of these books are like 700-page novels. It’s amazing how much one can accomplish when you have literally nothing better to do with your life, isn’t it? Yes, I am poking fun at myself. But it’s all temporary. I’m going to actually try my best to keep these three reviews as spoiler-free as possible, for once.

I’m going to start with Devious Lies by Parker Huntington, as that is the first NA book I finished reading this week. So this 700 page behemoth of a book features your standard enemies-to-lovers with a little bit of suspense/mystery added in for flavor. Oh, and sprinkled with some SERIOUS angst and brooding on top. It also features an age-gap romance, and is slow-burn. Devious Lies is basically about rich girl Emery Winthrop who, at 18 years old, is forced to forgo her rich girl life when her father goes under investigation for embezzlement and subsequently goes in hiding. When the embezzlement is leaked, this basically screws over everyone who’s employed by Emery’s father and everyone who invested stocks in his company. This includes a HUGE amount of people in the southern town Emery grew up in. This also includes the Prescott brothers, Reed and Nash. Reed is the boy that Emery had the biggest crush on her entire life, but Nash is ultimately the main love interest and POV that we see aside from Emery’s. 

After the whole embezzlement thing which is a huge factor leading to Nash’s father’s death, Nash is pretty much hellbent on seeking revenge on the Winthrops. By the time the story really gets going, Nash is in his 30s and has essentially built a multi-billion dollar enterprise and of course is one hell of an angsty playboy. Emery is around 22 years old, fresh out of college (paid for by herself) and gets hooked up with a job working for Nash. Nash finds out, and makes it his life goal to make Emery’s life as difficult as possible while trying to find out where her dad is hiding. The entire story is about the progression of their relationship and the secrets surrounding the embezzlement. 

So this is probably one of the better angsty love stories I’ve ever read. And that’s saying a lot because I’ve never liked angst all that much (tried it with The Cruel Prince and although I really didn’t like it I actually have been considering giving that trilogy another chance). Angst is usually so... unbelievably NOT well written at all b/c I feel like angsty characters are just angsty without a good enough backstory to defend it. This tends to be more so prominent in contemporary romance novels, or maybe that’s just because I’m a lot pickier when it comes to contemporary romance. But for Devious Lies, I think Huntington does a pretty good job at charging the main characters with believable and understandable angst. Nash grew up almost in poverty and his dad literally worked himself to death while watching trust-fund baby Emery grow up like a southern princess. The embezzlement destroyed Nash’s dad, so I can see why he blames the entirety of the Winthrop family for the hardships he faced growing up. Not to mention, Nash’s life story is the embodiment of a rags-to-riches story so of course he’s going to look down on Emery who supposedly gets millions of dollars per month just from her trust fund. 

Devious Lies is told from two alternating POVS, Emery & Nash, and I think the scene I anticipated the most was when Nash found out that Emery isn’t getting a single penny out of her trust fund and that Emery is actually living in poverty and working to survive, not out of boredom. We know that Emery’s life is incredibly tough from the very beginning, considering her family name is tainted and she owes student loans on top of helping fund someone else’s college tuition. Nash doesn’t find out about this until maybe past the halfway point of the book, and for me that was probably my favorite part of the entire book - the realization of how much of a complete ass he’s been to her and how she really is the last person who deserved to be targeted by his thirst for vengeance. This is also when their relationship hits a major turning point and finally dips out of the ‘enemies’ part of enemies-to-lovers. 

I think my biggest issue with Devious Lies is how unnecessarily long it is. I think it could absolutely be cut down to around 400 pages, since there were a lot of chapters (especially in the very beginning) that could’ve been very easily abridged or completely left out. The first several chapters covers major events from before Emery goes to college and Nash strikes rich, and from what I can tell these chapters are there to lay out character foundations. But Huntington really could have made these SO MUCH shorter and gotten to the actual story way quicker without sacrificing any character building. Just my two cents, although it seems like most reviewers on Goodreads agree with me over this regard. So despite some unnecessary chapters or parts that could have been left out, I think I’d still give this book a solid 4/5 simply because the author managed to write contemporary romantic angst without making me want to die of second-hand embarrassment. Not to mention, the big plot twists near the end of the story were quite well written and totally worth sticking around for in my opinion.

Second book is The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata. Apparently Zapata is like a god at writing sports romance, and this book was rated #1 on some kind of Goodreads list plus it was like 4 bucks or something so of course I had to check it out. This large book is around 600+ pages, but out of the three books that I’m reviewing in this post today this is DEFINITELY my favorite one of the three. I haven’t read a sports romance since I was 15 and obsessed with the Escape to New Zealand series, so I honestly didn’t know what to expect from this outside of mega muscle dudes and steamy sex scenes with said mega muscle dudes. But this book managed to exceed whatever I was expecting AND to my surprise only had one actual full-blown sex scene. Which was very tactfully placed and made for a beautiful end to a truly slow-burn romance. And by truly, I mean seriously truly slow-burn. My god, I don’t think I’ve ever read a slow-burn as freaking slow as this one. But wow it was so worth the snail pacing of their relationship. Speaking of the relationship, I need to talk about our two main characters.

We’ve got Vanessa who is super in debt and has been working as a famous football player’s (Aiden) assistant in every way possible for two years by the start of the story. She finally has enough in her savings to quit and focus on her graphic design freelance career, so she leaves and over a month later her boss is at her door asking her to marry him so he could get his US citizenship. The rest of the story is about the progression of their relationship after they get married and move in with each other. Unfortunately this book was written solely in Vanessa’s POV, and I say unfortunately because I would’ve really loved to have some Aiden POV chapters too. He’s not exactly a hardcore brooder, but he’s also not super open about himself either so at times it was REALLY hard to gauge what was going on in his brain. Despite this fact, it became really obvious that he was falling for Vanessa because he started doing more and more stuff for her as their relationship progressed. There were so two scenes in particular where all he did was just show up and be endearingly supportive and I was ready to bawl my eyes out over how uplifting it all was. 

The Wall of Winnipeg and Me is just one hell of an uplifting and puts-a-smile-on-your-face type of romance. It’s incredibly slow, and at some parts you may be like “oh my god jUST KISS ALREADY!” but when it all inevitably falls in place by the end you will realize just how worth it the ride was. Zapata does an amazing job of portraying a really healthy loving relationship where both members are just so supportive of each other and genuinely want the best for each other. They are actually relationship goals!! I was actually kind of SAD when I finished this book because despite the happy ending I just needed more wholesomeness. And even more unfortunately, there is no sequel and there is no add-on telling the story from Aiden’s POV. So for anyone who’s looking for a healthy dose of wholesomeness, wants something to tug at their heartstrings, and doesn’t mind just a little bit of sex, this book is 5/5 perfection.

Last book will be one that I just finished reading about an hour ago, The Kiss Thief by L.J. Shen. Now this one I kind of had to debate on for a little bit before I ultimately decided to read it. I found it on Goodreads around the same time I found The Wall of Winnipeg and Me, but after reading its synopsis the first time I got a little bit turned off by it. Not sure why, and I’m not sure what changed my mind but I ended up giving it a try earlier this afternoon and well well well what do you know I ended up reading it all in almost one sitting. The Kiss Thief, like the previous two books I reviewed in this post, is also a New Adult book (with more graphic scenes than Deviant Lies actually) featuring an enemies-to-lovers relationship between a 19-year-old daughter of a mobster and a 30-year-old US senator. Yep, that’s an 11-year age gap right there. Probably one of the most drastic age gaps I’ve seen in a book, but hey I guess some people are into those. The Chicago mobster’s daughter is named Francesca, and her dad gives her away to Wolfe Keaton for marriage due to reasons that become apparent much later on in the book. This book not only depicts the progression of Francesca and Wolfe’s relationship, but also of Francesca’s growth from a sheltered child into a woman. 

Francesca pretty much grew up as a princess, went to an elite boarding school in Europe for most of her life, and was super sheltered. To top it all off, she belonged to an incredibly old-fashioned “traditional” family where women were not expected to go to college but instead stayed at home and pumped out heirs while their husbands told them what to do. Francesca basically grew up her whole life thinking this was her destiny, along with marrying her childhood crush Angelo. But she gets thrown into Wolfe’s arms pretty quickly and early on in the book, and all hell breaks loose as these two absolutely chaotic crackheads go head-to-head with each other. Wolfe is seeking vengeance (why are all the angsty romance novels always centered around seeking revenge?) over something Francesca’s father did, while Francesca just wants to go home and be with Angelo. But things start to change when Francesca realizes Wolfe is actually willing to offer her certain freedoms that her father would never allow. Some of these freedoms include learning how to drive and going to college. 

While Wolfe is ultimately the hero to our heroine, he’s such an asshat for maybe the first 50% of the book. He’s broken (just like every single male love interest in every single book ever) for reasons that occurred in his past, he’s hell bent on revenge, and he’s vowed to never take a wife or fall in love. Obviously this all changes once he is engaged to Francesca, whose own stubbornness, willpower, and innocence takes him on one hell of a roller coaster of emotions. These two, and their relationship, are incredibly explosive but good god half the time they are SO toxic for each other. Their relationship is like the epitome of that one couple you know where they keep breaking up and getting back together again, or they keep getting into fights due to miscommunication, or they keep cheating on each other because the other did it first. When their relationship is good it’s pretty dang good, but when it goes south everything just turns into a living nightmare. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this book to people who are easily triggered by toxic relationships (and I mean truly emotionally toxic relationships), but outside of that it’s definitely not a bad read at all. The progression of Francesca and Wolfe’s relationship is actually relatively unique because it’s anything but linear. There are so many ups and so many downs, which makes the peaking points even more heart-wrenching in my opinion. Especially towards the end, the scene between Wolfe and Francesca’s father. Oh god, my heart couldn’t take it anymore. After this book I’m going to need to find a nice YA fantasy book that tones down the romance. And the steaminess, because The Kiss Thief definitely had PLENTY of those. I think of the three books I reviewed in this post, The Kiss Thief is the most graphic (although tbh I think its sex scenes are the most well written of the three). I’m thinking this book gets a 4/5 from me because while it’s good, I didn’t think there was anything about it that made it really special for me. It simply told an entertaining story, it had a unique progression of enemies-to-lovers, and the character progression of the heroine was fairly believable. 

In conclusion I recommend Devious Lies and The Kiss Thief for those looking for an angsty romance, and The Wall of Winnipeg and Me for those looking for wholesome slow-burn that will leave your heart feeling kinda fuzzy.

you check back in august and cristina says there are positions open in the fall. it was pretty easy as they accepted you right away. you do this bat shit crazy thing where you try to balance the two. planetary internship Tuesday Thursday Friday and McDonald’s the rest of the days. you even do opening shift during the weekends (4am-12pm).

you’re mostly quiet during your internship. you participate in riyl’s. you mainly talk to cristina while mailing. you don’t open up much until hayoung joins in november i think. mcdonalds is the same as usual, but your sleep schedule’s FUKED UP.

you hear in december that maria (who worked in publicity) is quitting. cristina encourages you to apply. you talk with adam and the interview tbh goes horribly. not like you didn’t have anything to say, but everything you said was wrong LOL. you also talk to george and ben and they lay out what press does but you dont catch any of that.

christmas office party happens and you drink a lot. you open up a lot to EVERYONE, iNCLUDING BEN about your love life (embarrassing) you’re obviously too drunk to drive home, but you stay over the night with nik and alison (goth bless their souls)

you check in with adam on the position occasionally until feb. 2019 when he breaks the bad news. the position’s filled. like how can you be surprised? but you’re still upset. you’re able to turn this as a positive to use your experiences to boost your resume.

you continue to work at mcdonalds and interview at places until you get a random email from adam exactly one year after you first emailed cristina about the internship. adam offers you the job. ofc you accept. you quit mcdonalds and start with planetary on may 1.

learning publicity is one hell of a learning curve. heck, you’re still learning how to do shit even now. but you’re thrown on the deep end with Luna. not your fault. not totally kristen’s fault. but that was a crazy client. 

anyways, your sleep schedule’s still fucked up because of your commute. but at least you have free weekends now! 

some highlights of 2019: you finally get a macbook! but you have a galaxy s9 as a phone lmfao. placements in The Line of Best Fit and Paste! you get absolutely entranced with warehouse raves. you literally go to at least once a month. falling in love with queen of jeans and linking up with their publicist Jamie Coletta (she’s super cool and the best at the game), going on two (2) dates with a really nice girl named sara. you got in your head and probably fucked that up. but it really wasn’t the time. christmas party 2019. same shenanigans but this time you don’t drink as much. you really look for places to move out to with ryan and he finds a house that angeli and linda live. two people are moving out and the rooms go for $500 and $600. you get the $500 room and are set to move in on Feb 16 2020. news of a disease called coronavirus is first detected in china. this will be important later.

oh 2020. what a shite year. if i told myself the things i’ll write down below i would not believe it. but here it is. everything that has happened so far in 2020:

first cases of coronavirus appear in washington on january. you’re not too concerned about it. 

you’re working this country artist aminah hughes and land a placement in american songwriter for January 31 (1st time!). there are some issues and they post it one day later, but you weren’t as attentive as you should’ve been over the weekend.

adam talks to you about it the following monday (2/3) in a really calm matter but you beat yourself up over it. so much so that on your way home, you totally don’t notice a pedestrian crossing galloping hills and eucalyptus and run them over. everything feels like a blur, but you’re able to talk to the police, karen, and kimberly (state farm) about it. you take tuesday-thursday off.

you move in (night before you saw bored lord and octo octa until 3am wtf). you don’t have a car (for obvious reasons), but you’re able to commute to work via bus/subway (which you would’ve done anyway cause you love public transportation lol)

you’re able to return to normal life mostly until middle march. cases of the newly named COVID-19 have spread throughout the united states and you hear of workspaces transitioning over to work from home operations. planetary soon follows suit. our last day in the office is march 13.

literally the week after you start wfh animal crossing new horizons comes out. that keeps you busy for like two, three months tops. it’s also a nice way to keep in touch with friends. 

your first therapy session happens on march 31. you’re able to talk about the accident, but it’s quickly directed to self-esteem. it’s an ongoing process, but you’re slowly advancing. it’s not linear, but it’s better than doing nothing.

Bandcamp establishes “Bandcamp Day”, 24 hour periods in which the site’s share of profits go directly to artists/labels. Started in April, will continue through the end of 2020. All the money I would normally spend on concerts goes here now. That and I fall to the hands of food delivery apps (door dash wins)

your campaign with Atta Boy gets going. first track premieres at Atwood Magazine (2nd time! [1st time was with sophia st. helen, another awesome client]). band’s super happy about it (even mr. josh brolin himself gave a shout out [bias ofc]). by the end of may you land their second single on THE MOTHERFUCKING FADER (1ST TIME OBVIOUSLY). 

everything else is going surprisingly well for the most part (except for elp, but i don’t wanna talk about those fucking idiots) despite the ever-changing landscape of music journalism. huge blogs are letting people go while smaller sites are remaining mostly the same. 

On May 25, George Floyd is murdered by Minneapolis police which sparks the biggest wave of activity in the Black Lives Matter movement since Michael Brown’s death in 2014. organizing/activism is still going on to this day (7/28). 

For me personally, I’m making a conscious effort to highlight Black artists on my Bandcamp days and general sharing of music. I also joined a book club (6/18) and read “Are Prisons Obsolete” in its entirety. We’re currently reading a comic series called Bitch Planet. Deep and meaningful conversations.

the family hears news of Lola’s declining health. June 23rd (Manila time) is the day she passes away. We’re all able to say our last goodbyes via facebook video call. this is the first time i see my dad cry.

funeral takes place on june 27th. we’re able to partake in the ceremony via zoom. the first and only funeral i “attended” online (so far).

I start “fixing” myself physically. I went to physical therapy from 6/8-7/7. the exercises do wonders to my knees (ty dr. bailey!). also saw a dermatologist on 7/10. really quick appt. kinda felt rushed imo, but i was given a special sunscreen that works so far? also recommended otc meds like claritin.

ended campaign with atta boy. really sad to see them go. currently coordinating with their new managers on a possible podcast and press setup. 

and that’s pretty much it! it’s a lot of shit, i know, but it happened all within 2 years. overall i’d say we were pretty successful in finding a big-girl job and MOVING OUT, WHICH I THOUGHT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN LMFAO. as for the shit you were hung up on with angelica, you’re so much better now, but you think about the good memories from time to time. sometimes it gets you down, but you’re thankful for the memories (come through fallout boy LMFAO AHAHA FALLOUT AMIRIGHT) and you learned from your mistakes. maybe it will be another two years before i leave another update, might be less, might be more. 

but i’m extremely proud at how far i’ve come.

Imperfect-Study's Study Survival Guide

Disclaimer: I’m an Aussie so some of this advice will relate more specifically to VCE than other international systems. Also this is what works for me personally, it may not work for you.

1. COMPLETE PAST EXAM PAPERS I can absolutely not stress enough how valuable these are, I complete as many as I can possibly get my hands on. (For Victorians, VCAA has previous exam papers for every year and every subject published on their website. It’s a new study design this year for most subjects (2017) so keep an eye out for any questions on topics you won’t need to know. You should also be able to find stacks of “unofficial” papers from various companies) -I didn’t usually worry about time limits or being under exam conditions. Reality is that your parents are going to interrupt you to ask you to unpack the groceries or you’re in the middle of babysitting your siblings or something. There’s nothing wrong with completing sections at a time.

-The more you do, the faster you’ll become. Your thinking processes will become more efficient, you’ll write faster, and you’ll begin to whip through any multiple choice sections.

-If you really struggle staying within time limits, my psychology teacher recommends practicing “one minute per mark” e.g. Only spend 4 minutes on a question worth 4 marks

-I found, especially with my science classes: one mark will equal one dot point.

-Try to stay within the space you’ve been given. Sometimes you haven’t been given enough space or you need to go over to get your point across but most of the time you’re just not being concise enough. Work on it and think about how you write your answers before you commit them to paper.

2. GO THROUGH YOUR COMPLETED EXAM PAPERS AND EXAMINER’S REPORTS This is just as important as completing the papers themselves. Here’s some specific advice: - If you’re going through the 2016 Biology Exam and see that only 16% of the state got full marks on a cellular respiration question, you should study cellular respiration inside out. Make it your strength. Cohort’s don’t change much, weakness don’t change year to year. If you see that under 50% of the state is getting full marks on questions about a particular topic, you make sure you know that topic and you’ll have one up on most of the state.

-Make a list of every topic you got wrong, be specific (do this for every test or set questions you do for a class). Note if you got it wrong because you didn’t read a question or if you didn’t know enough about a topic. You’ll see patterns. In math, I kept on missing out on the end of a question that mentioned how many significant figures to round to; I picked up my mistake and fixed it. In biology, I regularly got questions about whether a solution was hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic wrong: I focused on osmosis for a while in my bio class and got better. There’s always a pattern in your errors. Find it.

-Look out for topics that reappear pretty regularly. Questions about that topic can be VERY similar in each exam E.g. If you go through VCAA biology exams you’ll find pretty much the same transcription and translation question every year. I became familiar with responses out of examiner’s reports for these types of questions and was able to use them out in my exam (or at least apply them). It’ll make you feel more familiar with your exam when you sit it, maybe even make it more predictable.

3. DISCIPLINE > MOTIVATION

For the first 2-4 weeks of the year motivation will have you studying from the minute you get home til the second you shut your eyes to sleep. You won’t even feel like having breaks. Next minute you’re in the midst of the month of hell (i.e. May), you have three assessments this week, you managed to get an hour of study done this weekend. I don’t really think of discipline in the normal way when it comes to study, for me it means knowing how I work best and how to keep myself on track without relying on random energy spikes.

-Get in the habit of breaks from the very first day of term 1. You may not feel like it because you’re well rested, fresh off the beach, and motivated to get sh*t done. But take them. You’ll get so so sick of studying early on and you’ll burn out well before Easter holidays.

-Work out when you work best. If you are one of those people who can get up at 6am and work productively (please tell me your secrets) then do that. I study in the afternoon, usually from 4:30-5:00pm onwards.

-Work out how long you’re able to work at your best each day.I study 45-60 minutes per subject (I have 4 ¾’s) with 10-15 breaks in between. A guy in my class will study in 20 minute blocks with 5 minute breaks in between. Sometimes I don’t worry about timing myself and will just have breaks after I’ve completed a task. Don’t be afraid to change it up, especially if you’re tired.

-Also this may be contradictory to my main point, but “if you don’t feel like painting, don’t paint” (Credit to random ATAR Notes guy). You need to keep an eye out for when you need to take a night off. Sometimes you just need to take a nap. Interpret that quote however you want, it just felt like good advice to me.

4. COMPARE THE PAIR I’m really conflicted about comparing myself to others. VCE is a system entirely structured around rankings. Your study scores are ranks based of where you sit in the state which are based of where you rank in your class. I’m a very competitive person, so comparing myself to others motivates me. However there’s a line to this. It’s significantly less stressful to run your own race. I can’t just tell you to stop comparing your marks to others, because I know it just isn’t that easy. Just try and recognise your own progress too.

-Try working on your perception of failure. Harness it to motivate you to do better next time.

5. TEACHERS Your teachers teach the same content every year, they know it all back to front. Use them.

-If at any point in time you think “I don’t get this” write it down, sticky note it, set a reminder to ask your teacher about it. Question, question, question.

-Learn their approach to teaching early on. My math teacher lets everyone work at their own pace while my health teacher is free with detention slips when worksheets are handed in late. Try and get on their good side.

-Your teachers mark your assessments, if they hint at anything to do with how they mark, write it down and keep it in mind. Also they may have previously marked exams for VCAA, if so they’ll what you need to include it certain types of questions to get full marks. They’re like a walking, talking previous-exam report. Ask for their advice.

-If you really struggle learning from your teacher, ask your classmates (remember you guys are a team NOT competition), visit forums, and seek out other teachers who also teach the subject. Even if your teacher is great do this. The more people explain something to you, the more you’ll get it and the easier you’ll remember it.

-Don’t be afraid to send them emails, they take their job home

-Ask them to mark any extra questions you do out of your textbook. You often will not have the answers yourself and they can give you feedback

6. GET AHEAD DURING THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS Phew I feel like this stuff is getting out of order by now, but here we are. Doing this will take a whole heap off pressure off you at the start off the year.

-Number 1 thing to do is to complete set holiday homework. There’s nothing worse than starting the school year behind in your work.

-Read your English texts. I had four novels. Write or find chapter summaries for them. Reread them if you have time. You need to be familiar with the characters, themes, and plot. You do not want to be reading 1984 in the middle of August.

-Skim through your textbooks. Summarise chapters.

-Start a list of terms you need to know for each class

-Practice writing, doesn’t have to be essays or anything. The worst thing is coming back to school feeling like you’re wording your sentences weirdly.

-Get to know the study design. Know what you don’t need to know. 7. ACTUAL STUDY It took a more that a few paragraphs to get to the point. -I hate cue cards, they don’t work for me at all. If you haven’t used them to study before, don’t spend hours writing them out for a whole textbook. Try them out with a few definitions and if they work then continue. Don’t force it just because it’s a popular technique.

-I don’t usually hand write notes, it takes a lot of energy and I get sores from pressing on the paper too hard. I type out my notes. It’s up to you as to what you do

-To memories a concept I’ll retype a whole document paragraph by paragraph to remember it (with the paragraph i’m copying scrolled up out of sight). If you prefer writing then try rewriting each paragraph. (This is my main study method)

-To do well you need to know your content and how to play the game. I can’t specifically tell you how to do this but you need to know how to answer questions. This goes back again to doing practice exams

-Have a conceptual understanding of the context. Memorisation can only get you so far. It ultimately comes down to being very familiar with content. To explain: By the time I completed four units of VCE biology I had been introduced to around 600 new terms. Every year there is at least one question that’ll ask for a definition. Now biology is already a very content heavy subject, I couldn’t go out and learn 600 definitions by heart. In the exam I was asked to define ‘vaccine.’ I didn’t know the textbook definition of ‘vaccine,’ but I knew about vaccines, I knew a key word would be ‘attenuated.’ So I came up with a definition from there. Ultimately you need to be able to apply the information you know to unknown situations.

-Immerse yourself in the subject. Make posters and stick them on your fridge and on the toilet door. You may not even read them, but the topics will always be in your face keeping your knowledge fresh in your mind

-Look at as many sources of information as possible, if you see the information in different forms you’ll develop a far better understanding of it. Read your textbook, old textbooks, your notes, company notes, teacher PowerPoints, articles. Trade notes with your friends. Watch YouTube. 8. LOOK AFTER YOURSELF I actually hate that I’m putting this in here. So stereotypical of a study guide.

-have little control of what food I eat, I get what I’m given in my household. So if I’m not eating well I can’t change that. I’m sure nearly all students are in the same position. As much as I would love to have a detox juice for breakfast it’s not going to happen. Just make sure you’re eating enough energy-wise

-Life gets in the way of exercise. I walk to and from school every day and this is enough for me to have a break and think.

-Get to bed before midnight. Sleep is the one thing I will stress about to you. If you aren’t getting enough rest you will burn out. School is tiring even when you’re getting 8 hours of sleep. I’m still working on this one (btw it’s 12:48am atm). School is so much more enjoyable when you’re well rested.

-If you’re overwhelmed, take a long bath or shower. You need to give yourself some time out sometimes

9. ORGANISATION

-I recommend having a diary or at least a notebook where you can write things down

-Write down every piece of set homework, even if you think you’ll remember it because you probably won’t.

-My diary is more of a to-do list. I write down everything that I want to get done in a week, including set homework and study. That way when I have free periods at school and when I get home I know exactly what I can do with my time.

-Highlight important events such as tests and due days so you won’t forget them or look over them in your planner

-Apart from my diary, I write very specific to-do lists for each day. This is especially helpful on weekends and holidays when you don’t have the routine of school

-Pack your bag the night before. It’ll mean one less thing you have to do in the morning and 10 minutes of extra sleep.
