Thing I made for my Stolen Throne AU.
There are the 'extinct' species that lived on the Red Line during the void century on my AU.( 'extinct' is written like that because some still there descendents until the current time bit not 'pure-blood'. Also not added the Lunarians because they are canon species)
SOLARIANS: The solarians are the species that lived alongside the lunarians, they had big wings and horns. There discussions about the origins of they, some saying they are the results of the mixing of Lunarians and Onis and others that they are the precursors of said species. The main family are Drayce family, ancestors of the clan of D . Head at the time: Queen Moh-Key Drayce of Marijoise.
PHEONIX: The pheonixes are humanoid beings with feathers for hair and around their faces and limbs, they could also turn into a full bird form. They are taller than an average human and their bird form are at the side of the imperial eagle. Head of the time: Queen Amara Kafsi of Oreas. Another important person was Caleb Kafsi, Queen's Amara half brother and Moh-key's future husband
VAMPIRE: The Vampire are pale(not white, pale like a corpse) beings, they had a slow heartbeat and are know for their yellow eyes. They drink blood and eat raw meat. Are agile and sensible to sunlight(wouldn't kill them but make they sick). They also had a Island in the granline as part of their domains. Their life span was around 200 years old and they didn't age too much after some age. Head at the Time: Empress Persephone Sângerare of Sangria.
FEY: The fey are fairy like beings. They are small but taller than the tontatta being around 120cm–140cm. They are really know for their precision in shooting and their ability to hide. They had insect wings with the royal family having butterfly ones. They all could talk with the nature using the voice of all things. Head at the time: King Realta Bryn of Ardeen.
MUSE: The muses are a music, stories and science guied people, they are know for their bright red hair and purple eyes. They are not all female as some believe. They come after their founders the nine muses and for that they chose a path. Like if some are science aligned they said that 'they follow the path of Urania' or if they are music aligned that "they follow the path of Euterpe/Erato'. They are aways rulled by a triad. Heads at the time: The triad Lyric Aria( follower of the path of Erato), Cosmos Ananta (Follower of the path of Urania) and Opera Miseri (Follower of the path of Melpomene) of Helikon.

Eugene Onegin: a comedy in three acts
So I watched Helikon Opera’s Eugene Onegin again. I have not seen this much laughing in any other staging of Onegin! The singers acted emphatically, and in places it even had a sitcom vibe. I had great fun watching it.
The story of Onegin, if you think about, is quite funny. It’s the irony of fate! This production really doubled down on it, and it could be called Eugene Onegin: zero brain cells edition. Tatiana is immature and innocent, and she writes a very very melodramatic love letter to the hot&single new neighbor Onegin she’s just met and that she mistakes for her long awaited fairy-tale prince.
Tumblr media
Her sister Olga (who is portrayed as kind of an asshole) does not understand what all this drama is all about, she wants to have fun and that her bf would take a chill pill.
Tumblr media
“What the fuck are you accusing me for, Vladimir!“
Spoiler alert: Lensky does not take a chill pill. Instead he gets in a fight with Onegin, but that friend is a dick who mocks him, and so he calls him out. The other party-goers eat it up: what juicy drama! Some of the chorus where straight up laughing.
Onegin and his buddy monsieur Guillot show up late to the party (aka the duel) and make fun of Lensky’s and Zaretsky ‘s seriousness.
Tumblr media
You can tell a lot about the production by how Guillot is portrayed! He thinks this is all in good fun and has no clue how bad this is going to end.
The duet-canon is delicious in how Onegin is repeating the words Lensky is singing, but the meaning is completely different. Lensky is melancholic, mourning their friendship, while Onegin is asking “Bruh, why are we behaving like old enemies? Didn’t we, like, hang out all the time?” Only when they ask themselves if it wouldn’t be better to laugh it off and leave as friends, does Onegin notice that Lensky is serious about this. Dead serious. And by the time Zaretsky hands Onegin his gun, it’s too late to back out.
The comedy here is that neither doesn’t really want to do this. But they can’t imagine going back, and so Onegin shoots Lensky, and does not want to believe that Lensky is actually dead. Poor Guillot does not know what to do with himself, he definitely did not sign up for this, and so he awkwardly hides behind a pillar and just wishes he could sink into the ground.
Onegin’s solution to this is to leave everything behind and travel for a bit. But soon he’s back, and goes straight to the ball.
Tumblr media
No Onegin has had this much fun at the ball in Saint Petersburg. He dances and laughs - he has given up and does not give a damn about anything anymore! Until he sees her. Prince Gremin notices that these two have way more backstory than just  “oh we were neighbours,” and acts all jealous.
Onegin writes a letter to Tatiana (because that worked before!). But oh, the irony of fate: although Tatiana returns his feeling, it’s all too late. She’s married! Finita la commedia!
Only Russian comedies can be this tragic.

Review #59: Die Fledermaus at Helikon Opera
15 May 2020, recording from 27 December 2017
A popular production where the audience gets served champagne and vodka.
It’s a kind of production full of jokes that aren’t funny if you’re not tipsy and not physically there.
But! It’s Die Fledermaus! It’s full of bangers! And mid-show they had three performances from special guests, whose names I unfortunately did not catch, but they were so goshdarn impressive. Especially the Mongolian singer, holy crap. So it was occasionally enjoyable.

Did you during your Onegin project discover any hidden gems? Recordings that aren't as wildly popular as the ones from MET or Mariinsky, but nevertheless worth the watch/listen?
Also did you see the one from Helikon opera: https://youtu.be/fOnlTvzoBu4 and what are your thoughts?
Ah! Thank you so much for asking about my Eugene Onegin Project! It was such a joy, and I thank you for recommending me so many that I watched. (Including the DNO, which ended up being the last of the Project. I have so many feelings about that production and I really ought to spew them forth at some point.)
So, hidden gems on video. I think it’s no secret that I despise the Carson that literally every other person loves, and adore the Warner. And the recent Mariinsky is just fantastic. Yes, I saw the Helikon, and it’s a really interesting take. I think what impressed me most about it, actually, is how well the designers made use of the space in the small house.
But other videos of note are the Komische with Asmik Grigorian, and the Polish National production with Rucinski and Opolais. Both having interesting staging ideas and excellent sing, especially that second one, which I’ve watch several times.
youtube
The only other thing to note on video recordings I saw is that the Tcherniakov and Glyndebourne should be avoided.
Audio recordings: You know, all the old-school Bolshoi/Kirov recordings just blend together in my head in a pleasant but unremarkable mush. Obviously, the Dima/Shicoff/Focile is one I’ve listened to a ton, because Dima.
But recently my favorite has become one I’ve never seen anyone else talking about—Allen/Shicoff/Freni.
I fucking love it. And speaking of Freni, the recording with Brendel and Dvorsky (and Ghiaurov) is also amazing, and my go-to live Onegin on Spotify.
Thank you so much for asking! (And helping me find so many of these. 😊 )

I’m realizing just how much Russian opera I’ve seen over the past few months. Up to now, most of my familiarity with this canon has been through audio recordings, so it’s very exciting to get to watch full productions. It’s been giving me a lot to think about, re: what the big themes are in these works, and how they come to life onstage, and what I personally find effective and why. Here’s a crude rating of everything I’ve seen so far, as a start. Note that even the things in the last three categories had aspects I enjoyed, I’m not that much of a curmudgeon. (To be updated.)
I need to watch this again right now: Onegin [Mariinsky 2015], Prince Igor [Met 2014], The Queen of Spades [Mariinsky 2015]
Very, very good: Betrothal in a Monastery [Mariinsky 2016], Sadko [Bolshoi 2020], War and Peace [Mariinsky 2003], War and Peace [Opera Australia 1973]
I’m glad I had the chance to see this: Boris Godunov [Met 2010], Khovanshchina [Mariinsky 2012], The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh [DNO 2012], Onegin [Met 2013], The Tale of Tsar Saltan [Mariinsky 2015]
Meh: Mazeppa [Mariinsky 2019], Onegin [Met 2007]
Oddly compelling but I don’t really like it: Mazeppa* [Helikon 2017], Onegin [DNO 2011]
Nope: Onegin* [Komische Oper Berlin 2016]
*I didn’t watch all the way through.
To watch: The Queen of Spades [Moscow Stanislavsky 2016], War and Peace [Moscow Stanislavsky 2013]

Hello it's me again with another Onegin ask! (I love reading your answers <3) You've probably answered this before, but what are your (current) top 5 favorite Onegin productions?
Thank you for asking & those nice words! 💚💚 I might not be an Onegin expert, but I love sharing my love for the opera.
Here goes (house, year, Onegin, Tatiana):
1. Met 2007 Hvorostovsky Fleming
This is a surprise to no-one. I play it on loop constantly! There's just no one like Hvorostovsky to sing Onegin, I literally lost my mind the first time I saw it, and I haven't regained it since. I play bits and pieces of it every day (especially the final scene), I can't get enough of it!
2. Mariinsky-2 2016 Bondarenko Goncharova
The costumes here are all over the place, but everything else? Chef's kiss! The characterization was done right, (especially Olga!). Another favourite detail was how Eugene showed up to the Larins' party way overdressed - the costumer Gets it! Also the polonaise??? Fantastic. And they did the duel right!!
3. WSO 2018 Markov Bezsmertna
I saw this one live (shout-out to the 3€ standing seats!) and I'm so happy it got recorded so I can revisit it whenever I want. I knew Markov was great, but Bezsmertna?? BEAUTIFUL performance!! Her voice is AMAZING. And even though it was kinda modern adaptation, they made a normal duel - take note, directors!
4. Met 2017 Mattei Netrebko
I really like the artists here... The production doesn't do anything weird and lets the artists shine. This is the one I'd recommend to Onegin first-timers.
5. Helikon Opera 2016 Isaev Tolkmit
This is the wildcard of this list, it's different from anything else I've seen (but in a good way!) I really vibe with this one, it's fresh and fun.
I'm glad that Eugene Onegin is a popular opera, so that there are many productions to choose from. What all my favourites have in common is that they did the duel right (even if I'm peeved by the rifles in Met 2017). You can't make an EO without the duel, and it often falls between the cracks. It's about the will-they-won't-they shoot, isn't it? Listen to the music, that's what it's saying!
I know there are so many productions for me to discover <3 Though there's always a tug-of-war in my mind when it's time to watch EO - do I rewatch a production I know I love, or do I roll the dice and watch a new one?

Review #55: Eugene Onegin at Helikon Opera
11 May 2020, recording from 2016
Fun fact: the production was reconstructed from a 1922 production.
This was a really good one! Loved the heck out of it! All the singers were amazing and the set and costumes were really nice!
Tatiana’s letter aria was great. Loved the expression of Instant Regret as soon as her letter was sent off. And Onegin’s rejection was so wonderfully painful. Tatiana didn’t get at first that he was in fact rejecting her because all the talk about how she would have been a perfect wife were he to settle down and how he liked her etc sounds on the surface level nice enough to fool an infatuated girl. And Onegin of course thought his feedback on her confession was constructive and solicited.
During Tatiana’s nameday ball, Onegin was villanous. Overdressed and bored, he was intent on destroying the night for Lensky. Even when their quarrel was drawing a crowd, he did not stop taunting Lensky, who hurled insults at Olga and stormed off.
Onegin did not take Lensky’s challenge seriously, and sauntered onto the grounds giggling with monsieur Guillot, both openly mocking Lensky’s and Zaretsky’s dead-searious approach to the duel.
Tumblr media
Here’s a screenshot describing the dichotomy. Lensky, devastated, wonders how they had so suddenly become enemies, and Onegin, scoffing, echoes his words, still finding the whole affair ridiculous. Only when they ask if they could reconclie does Onegin realize that this is not a conflict they can laugh off. When the pistols are handed out, only Guillot is amused -- he realizes the seriousness only when Lensky is confirmed dead. 12/10 interpretation, would watch again. (And I have.)
Timeskip Act III -- now there’s a new century, and the upper crust is dressed in dazzling 1920′s dresses. Onegin goes from a ship straight to the ball and plasters on a smile and dances, but is unraveled at the sight of Tatiana. He listens to Prince Gremin’s possessive aria, and when the partygoers leave, Onegin in a frenzy writes his letter to Tatiana.
And the final scene is, in both acting and direction, so freaking good. I’m out of words to describe it. It’s Eugene Onegin at its best.
