I always help my parents on Halloween because they live in a part of town that gets an insane number of trick-or-treaters. I mean, seriously insane. If Halloween falls on a Friday or Saturday, we get over a thousand trick-or-treaters. This year was relatively quiet, so we’re estimating that we only had about 350.
Ever since I graduated from trick-or-treater to candy giver, I’ve tried to keep a mental tally of the most popular/interesting costumes each year. It always entertains people when I share my results, so here goes...
Superheroes dominated the night once again, for at least the fifth year in a row. I’d say the most popular ones this year were: (1) Spider-Man (by a landslide); (2) Captain America; (3) Superman/Supergirl; (4) Black Panther; and (5) Ant-Man.
Belle was by far the most popular Disney princess. Minnie Mouse must be having a moment though too because she was the most popular Disney character altogether.
The most popular family-themed costumes were (1) Black Panther (by a landslide) and (2) The Incredibles.
The most random costumes were (1) a whoopie cushion; (2) a basket of dirty laundry; and (3) a bottle of bleach. And no, unless they met up later, the laundry basket and bleach girls were not together.
The semi-obscure costumes that the wearers were excited that I got were Janet from The Good Place, Helena from Orphan Black, and Newt Scamander (The boy’s father thanked me profusely for saying the right name because his son was sad that people had been calling him Harry Potter all night).
The most popular classic costumes were (1) witches (by a landslide); (2) vampires; and (3) angels.
Skeletons are apparently having a moment because they were one of the top costumes tonight. All kinds of skeletons – skeleton brides, skeleton ghosts, skeleton zombies, even a princess skeleton. It was enough to make me think that there must be some kind of skeleton-themed pop culture phenomenon that I haven’t heard about yet.
I would say Adventure Time has the most passionate fans this year based on the amount of time the group I saw must have spent making/planning their costumes.
Formerly popular costumes that I didn’t see at all this year include Elsa and Anna, Thing One and Thing Two, Harry Potter, Rey/anyone from Star Wars actually, Ghostface, and Iron Man.
