Helen Gallagher (July 19, 1926 – November 24, 2024) Stage and television actress, dancer, and singer. She received three Daytime Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, a Donaldson Award, and a Drama Desk Award.
On television Gallagher portrayed Irish matriarch Maeve Ryan on the ABC soap opera Ryan's Hope. She played Maeve for the show's duration, from July 1975 to January 1989, and was recognized with three Daytime Emmy Awards.
As the show progressed into the 1980s, the show's ratings — never at blockbuster levels — took a steep slide. ABC executives cancelled Ryan's Hope in 1989. Creator and head writer Claire Labine scripted the end of the final episode with Maeve at the family bar, singing "Danny Boy". Almost immediately after the cancellation of Ryan's Hope, Gallagher had a two-day guest stint on Another World, and has appeared in All My Children as a strict nurse and on One Life to Live as a sex therapist.  (Wikipedia)

I can't find the post, but a user said their headcanon Lip was jealous of Ian because of his relationship with Monica, the “closeness" they had, earning the title of the favorite kid by Monica standards, something something. That 1x10 scene with Lip and Monica tells you everything you need to know about his feelings towards her. He wants to love her but refuses, understandably so. And it's obvious Helene is ominously written to fill that motherly void Lip has. But I just constantly think of the line "I want to surround myself with minds like Youens and Runyon."
I'm rambling and not making sense but, I honestly believe Lip was Frank's favorite out of the boys. He hated Ian, only used Carl for personal gain and liked him for it, was too I'll to genuinely "value" Liam. Not to say that being Frank's favorite is ok 💀 Lip was obviously Youens favorite student, as fucky as their relationship was, and here comes Helene. He was Helene's "special student." What a way to feel like a favorite student by two professors that only feed the void your parents created.
Youens will always be an alcoholic no matter how much you wish he cared for you. His own daughter resented him. You're reliving what Frank created. And Helene, you want her to be with you, you nurture you cause your mom never could and she found a new kid to emotionally manipulate. Even if she had good intentions with him in S5, she took advantage of a vulnerable teenager. ANYWAY, back to Lip.
Really, wanting to be your professor's favorite student to see if it somehow fills that parental void. Only for both your biological father and "chosen" father to die, alcohol related deaths by the way. Then there's your biological mom who died and you never rebuilt your relationship with her because why would you. Not only did you find a mommy you could slide your dick in, the bitch groomed you, left you high and dry, just like Monica, and then you relapsed. You thought you could fill that Monica hole with her, but, just like with your "dads," you ended up with no mom either. I'm rambling, ate a lot of sugar and this is the result, I'm thinking about Lip again.
Lip I'm so sorry. You're a tragic fuck. I love you.

A sombre shot of Sam Reid and John Leary as Dale Jennings and Murray Gallagher from No More Lies, as well as some others ❤️

Next Thursday, it will have been three years since No More Lies first went to air on the ABC. It’s a funny feeling, seeing all these Season One episodes reach their third year anniversaries, as I have such strong vivid memories of watching this show as it first aired, whilst we were in lockdown. It truly doesn’t feel like that long ago, but according to time and mathematics, it is.

No More Lies really did strike a nerve. It’s brilliantly brave and searing storytelling around the plight of HIV and AIDS affected people and how the media represented - or rather, misrepresented - their stories and circumstances. This is why I love The Newsreader so dearly. It hasn’t portrayed the 1980s through rose-coloured glasses, and has sought to elevate the stories and perspectives that were either misrepresented or not represented at all during the time. It also demonstrates how easy it is to fall for misinformation, and I genuinely believe that this episode is a great lesson in media literacy. The whole show itself, but in particular this episode, should be used in schools and universities.

A part of my paternal family history is my Dad’s younger brother, who was a young gay man who contracted HIV during the 1990s. This was the decade in which medical treatment and antiretroviral therapies became available to significantly prolong the progression of the virus to AIDS in HIV-affected patients. He was thankfully able to benefit from these therapies and medications, which bought him two decades of life, longer than our Russ and Caroline would have lived for.

We sadly lost my paternal uncle Christmas 2012, when he was only forty years old. Through watching this episode with my Dad, it gave me the courage and the instigator for a discussion about my uncle’s condition, how people responded to it, and how it impacted his life. I’ll forever be grateful to No More Lies, and especially to Michael Lucas and Kim Ho, for giving me the opportunity to have this discussion with my Dad, which I had been hesitant to have for at that point nine years. Never underestimate the power of good media and the conversations and connections it can bring about. 💖🌟
