His lack of confidence in himself, always made it hard for him to recognize himself as the skilled detective that he truly is. This girl looked so impressed, too... he wasn't used to anyone looking so interested to talking to him. Maybe that's why, despite how awkward he's sure he's looking; Shuichi didn't mind talking to her. He also took note of her appearance, suspecting that she is a foreigner. Eccentric as she seems, she did seem very cheerful and kind. He thought it would be nice, to indulge her...maybe even make a new friend out of this. That'd be nice...

"I see....it sounds very promising. Then I'll definitely watch it once I can. I'm always happy to become invested in a new detective show. Oh...?" When she explains one of the things the detective in the show does , and if he's ever done something like that, or the even more insane actions of having a shootout with a Yakuza boss and his pet tiger, he laughs, giving a shake of his head. "O-Oh goodness, no, nothing that flashy! Especially the latter...those are pretty much the kind of things you will only see in detective shows, as, yeah, very unbelievable to see or happen in real life... Th...The 'craziest' thing I might have done is learn to climb mountains and swim up rivers to catch an old classmate's pet baby alligator.... other than that, the cases I typically take on are 'small', and not very flashy at all; that, or doing lots of boring paperwork. You could say I'm quite the boring detective in comparison. A-Ahaha....sorry the reality of being one is pretty disappointing sounding, huh..."

Not that Shuichi would exactly want to do such dramatic things on the norm for his cases. He'd much rather see the fictional detectives on TV or in books do that... Still, he felt a little bad that he practically might've shattered her excitement in meeting a real detective...

Her eyes light up as he mentions that while he may not be the celebrity in question, he is, in fact, a detective in truth. “Really?!” she blurts, balling her fists in excitement, only more overbearing now. “Then you certainly look the part!” Sonia hardly picks up on his meekness, simply assuming him charming and polite from his honest line of work (even though, to anyone else, it’d be clear he’s uncomfortable and doesn’t know what to make of her.) It may in part have been because she was used to people treating her a little different when she was in foreign countries; her blond hair and blue eyes stuck out of course.

So, if anything, she’s only more gratified when he kindly indulges her conversation. Listening to his explanation, she gets a better look at his visage when he finally gazed up; he certainly was handsome, especially with a smile. He had dark, silky hair and pretty lower lashes. Truthfully, she thought he’d maybe even look better without the hat hiding his face… (then again, what’s a detective without a signature cap?) The only thing that really stuck out to her was his age; could someone so young really be in such a serious line of work?

“It won many awards for its thrilling plot and script, it is a show I would recommend to most anyone… however, if you are actually a detective, I do wonder how believable the story would be to you.” Tapping her pointer finger to her chin, she hums. “There is one part where the detective is jumping from roof to roof chasing after the suspect in a mask. Have you ever done something like that, Mr. Detective? Oh, or have you had to have a shootout with a Yakuza boss and his pet tiger?“

In typical Nevermind fashion, the questions were asked with complete sincerity.

Mireille: Brother and Emma are going to be on stage?!

Today, I was taking part in one of my everyday pleasures: having tea with Prince Keith and Mireille.

Mireille was sipping her tea, but then shot up to her feet at the unexpected news.

Prince Keith and I had a similar reaction yesterday.

Mireille: When was this decided?!

Keith: Yesterday. While having dinner with Sonia, an author who I owe a lot to, had asked.

Mireille: The author herself did, huh…But why you two and not actors?

Keith: Well…

~~ Flashback ~~

It came up while we were enjoying some after-dinner tea.

Sonia: My new book's become quite popular, so we decided to have a special one night only performance.

Emma: Congratulations! I can’t wait to see it being performed on stage.

Keith: The new book’s about a spirit of a large tree who falls in love with a prince, dons a magic robe of visibility, and goes to seek out the prince for a moment of freedom and happiness.

(It’s a sad story, but those moments of happiness warmed my heart whenever I read it…)

Keith: I especially liked the last scene where the two desperately tried to convey their feelings for each other and have reread it several times. 

Emma: You always take your time when reading that scene.

Keith: Huh, really?! I wasn’t aware…I’m so embarrassed. But hearing how you notice those little things about me makes me happy.

He gave me a soft smile with red dusting his cheeks.

It was my favorite look on him and made my heart race with happiness.

(It’s like he doesn’t know he’s hit me with a counter attack)

Keith: Emma and I love your work, so we’ll definitely go see the performance.

Sonia: I’m happy to hear how much you enjoyed it, both as an author and as a friend. Actually, the script’s already complete.

With a beautiful smile that’d even charm the same sex, Sonia handed the both of us a script.

(Since she handed us copies of the script, that means we can look at it, right?)

Prince Keith and I both looked at each other, and then at Sonia with hope in our eyes.

Sonia: Hehe, you two always have the cutest reactions. Go ahead and take a look.

Keith and Emma: Thank you…!

Holding back my excitement, I flipped open the script and found a list of characters and actors.

My hands immediately froze on the spot.

I blinked my eyes to make sure that I wasn’t seeing things, but the text remained the same.

(Weird…Prince Keith and my name are on here)

Prince Keith and I looked at each other again, and then at Sonia in confusion.

Sonia: To be honest, the protagonists in this work were modeled after you two.

Keith: After Emma and I…?

(I did notice how the prince was gentle, yet strong, and a little awkward)

(Every time I turned a page, I thought about how cute and cool he was…)

Learning the secrets behind how the book was produced had me feeling more embarrassed rather than happy or surprised.

Sonia: When I mentioned it to the stage director, he enthusiastically said, “I want them to play those roles.”

Keith and Emma: …

Sonia: Why not enjoy the play as its actors instead of from the audience?

When my favorite author asks for help with promoting her work, of course I’m going to agree to it.

Keith: No, just one won’t be enough for Emma’s first performance. But doing every second would make the painters collapse, so why not one per scene?

Mireille: That’s true. Then, if we go with your suggestion, how many painters will we need—

A cup of tea in hand and eyes sparkling as bright as the sun filtering into the conservatory, Mireille started making plans.

I found myself smiling at how much she reminded me of Prince Keith when he was talking about plants.

Keith: …

Emma: Is something wrong, Prince Keith?

Keith: Ah, um…

Prince Keith’s eyes shifted from side to side before looking at me.

Keith: Sorry for bothering you.

I had heard it on the carriage home, but it must have slipped out again due to some lingering guilt.

I shook my head.

Emma: I didn’t turn Sonia down, so please don’t apologize. While it will be my first time on stage and I am feeling nervous about it, I’m glad I get to be involved with a work I love. More importantly, I’m looking forward to this once in a lifetime opportunity to be on stage with you. Let’s do our best to make this performance a huge success!

When I pumped my fists, Prince Keith’s brown turned downward and he gave a slight nod.

Keith: …Yeah. Thanks, Emma.

His apologetic expression was in some way different from the one before.

When Mireille noticed something was off, she clapped her hands together as if she remembered something. Her eyes were still sparkling.

Mireille: Have you two done a read-through of the script yet?

Emma: We were planning on doing that later.

Mireille: Is that so?! Then do you mind if I hear a little bit of it?

Emma: I don’t mind, but…

Keith: Ah……yeah, it’s fine.

Mireille: Yay! Thank you.

His eyes had wavered and there was some trembling in his voice, but he returned to his usual calm look when took the script from Liam.

Keith: Let’s start from the beginning.

Emma: Okay, it’s when you first meet the heroine’s spirit.

I flipped open the script and looked over the exchange between the prince and the spirit.

Hey. So, I saw your Chiaki & Fuyuhiko comic that I like to call "Look on the Bright Side" (since it didn't have an official name in the post itself), and I loved it. I loved seeing Nanami & Kuzuryu interact with each other with the former comforting the latter on Peko and complimenting on how brave he was to save his friend, the scene between Fuyuhiko & Peko during the latter's execution, and then the scene of you making a throwback to your DR3 rewrite from your Talky Talky Tuesday content where the DR2 cast witness Human Chiaki's death and chose not to help her because of how awful Junko's influence on them was. It was heartwarming, bittersweet, and terrifying all at the same time, and as @/self-in-dulled-gent put it in their reblog of the comic, the 4th & 5th panels depicting your DR3 rewrite is a cool and visceral indication of how far the DR2 cast had fallen into despair. Heck, both the comic & the rewrite even serve as inspiration towards my au/rewrite/reimagine of DR3's Despair Arc & how Junko corrupts the DR2 cast into despair. So, thank you so much for the inspiration. I really appreciate it.

With all that in mind, I have some questions I wanna ask you regarding both the comic & DR3 rewrite, if you don't mind.

May I have your permission to do a review on your DR3 Rewrite post for my Advian Reads & Reviews content (which in case you're curious about, AR&R is reading review series where I read something, like fanfiction for example, while also doing a review on it at the same time, giving my thoughts on whatever I'm reviewing as well as potentially even sharing my own stories)?

Will you ever showcase the bonus panel of the rest of the class witnessing Chiaki's death that you mentioned in the comic's tags?

Who is the 5th person on the right between Kazuichi & Hiyoko in the 4th panel (I'm assuming it's Sonia based on the hairstyle, but I thought I'd ask for some confirmation)?

Will we ever get to see the dialogue of Chiaki not resenting Hajime/Izuru for not helping her you also mentioned in the comic's tags?

Follow up on that previous question, do you think it's possible that we might also get to see if Chiaki resents her classmates for not helping her, or if she would also get it with them like she did with Hajime/Izuru?

How exactly does Junko kill Chiaki in front of her classmates? Does she still have her go through her execution like in canon, or does she kill her in a different way, and if so, then how? I ask because I saw Nanami had blood coming from her eyes & mouth (making it look like Junko literally pulled her eyes out), there's blood on her hoodie & left thigh, and she appears to have been stabbed on her right side.

And those are my questions. In regards to gaining your permission to review your DR3 rewrite, if you do grant permission, great! I'll be sure to credit you and give you a shoutout too if you do. 2: the bonus panel was actually everyone else's deaths (in SDR2) since they all sort of died alone, too. But it didn't feel relevant enough, I prrrrrrrrobably don't have the sketch anymore

5: I think Chiaki, if she got to see the events of SDR2 as the AI, wouldn't resent her classmates so much as feel sorry for them and be disappointed. At the same time though I think she might be shocked at what they're capable of. Maybe she can't help but be a bit bitter, who knows. Hajime/Izuru is a different deal since that guy literally got his brains scrambled, can't really blame him. (sort of like deleting all the save data, maybe?)

6: the blood and amounts of it was more about the drama lol. But I thought the obstacle was like, a little too fantastical, not serious enough, so in my rewrite she straight up beats Chiaki to death with some kind of instrument. I think the image of Junko doing something so realistic (and slow) while everyone watches passively is even worse.

Shuichi was personally for the idea Ms. Yukizome had came up with. Being mentored by one of his upperclassmen first, before eventually doing the real deal in front of the Steering Committee; the latter being, in all honesty... absolutely terrifying sounding. If it were just regular school exams, with tests regarding different school subjects, that'd be one thing...but Hope's Peak was a special case, in which everyone would have to showcase their talent in some way. Being an Ultimate Detective, he is certain his exam will involve a case of some kind; perhaps solving a mock or real one. While he does not want to believe he would fail to do so... he's heard some of the horror stories about bad experiences some in the past had with their exams. And his confidence.... was still not the highest. Would that, and his general anxiety, only worsen the pressure he knows he will feel on that day? Just even entertaining the thought makes his stomach twist... but he snaps out of the thought, as he enters the library.

"Ah, Sonia-senpai." He makes his way towards her when hearing his name, returning the smile and wave. He couldn't had felt more relieved, himself, to have Sonia be the one to mentor him. Out of everyone in class 77, he was the closest with her. That, and with how kind and friendly she always is, always helped Shuichi to feel more relaxed, comfortable around her. As he sits down, he responds: "Of course. Thank you for arranging this meet up time for us. And funny you say that, because I was also worried if I was going to have a mentor that would be... challenging to work with, so I was honestly really hoping it would be you. I'm happy we both got lucky!" He chuckles, giving a nod in agreement. "I'm positive we will. I know you will be a great and helpful mentor to me, Sonia-senpai. Y-Yeah... but that just makes me look more forward to the next time we can have our little book hangouts."

But for now, he was going to have to prove himself for this practice session. His eyes gaze down at the folder she takes out, before looking back up at her when she begins. His expression is stern, focused; though it falters just slightly at the thought of being held back a year, if he does not do well enough to impress them. "U...Understood." But he couldn't let that scare him. To him, if he did, it would practically be admitting he's not completely confident that he will do a good job. A feeling he hates is all too familiar... he didn't want to fret about it. He just has to believe in his abilities, and in himself. So with a soft exhale, he gives his answer.

"Yes: to practice my skills, I thought I would try my hand at creating a case, myself. Specifically; I've come up with my own locked room mystery. A room that was locked from the inside... with the door being-or what should be-the only entrance and exit out of the room. Yet... the culprit was still able to somehow do so... Ah, I wrote down notes detailing everything, but I had chose to go with the classic 'locked bedroom in a mansion', for the setting."

Which is the small binder that he had been carrying under his arm when arriving here. "I wanted to challenge myself where that, even as the creator, it would not be easy to come up with a locked room that could be... more or less... possible to create and solve, without it being to out of the realm of possibilities."

It had been Miss Yukizome's idea, in collaboration with the instructor of Class 79. And more often than not, Miss Yukizome got her way: Mr. Munakata supported her always, and with his support came Mr. Sakakura's enforcement, to the point that Headmaster Kirigiri wasn't about to object. But her teacher's heart, Sonia supposed, was in the right place: she always looked for ways for Main Course students to foster relationships not directly tied to their talents, or at least not handed out due to their proficiency in them. That, and the biannual Steering Committee Review was known to terrify the younger students: apparently last year, someone in the 78th Class had managed a panic attack during their exam, startling both the Steering Committee and the onlookers, often involved in various businesses and organizations looking to employ an Ultimate after graduation. In short, it would be a negative look for the school if the pressure put on the shoulders of their Main Course students caused them to break in front of the very people whom they needed to dazzle.

So it had been Chisa Yukizome's idea for the new Class 79: allow members of the third year class, Class 77, to mentor the newest first year students. To prepare them for what it would be like to be watched, judged, and scrutinized by the very people who allowed them entrance into Hope's Peak Academy as well as their future employers and benefactors. An opportunity to observe their investments, so to speak. The school couldn't only run on the Reserve Course fees, after all.

The pairings had been assigned at random, though Sonia had let out an audible sigh of relief when hers had been handed out. Truth be told, she was worried she might be assigned someone who proved a challenge to get along with, like Iruma-san or Momota-san. But to her delight, she'd been assigned not just an underclassman but a friend, and hadn't hesitated to arrange for her and Shuichi to meet on an empty floor of the Hope's Peak Library after classes.

"Saihara-san!" She called quietly, giving him a smile and a small wave as he approached. There were a few other students working on collaborative projects, so their conversation likely wouldn't bother many. Still, it was only polite. "Thank you for coming. I was, in all honesty, concerned about how I might mentor some members of Class 79! But I do hope we shall work well together in this capacity, even though it is odd to be visiting the library for something other than selecting works of fiction to borrow."

She opened a folder to reveal a written form, soon to be filled out by her and every other member of Class 77-B with their assigned first year, depicting plans for exam project evaluations and the steps they'd take together to prepare the first year for the challenge. "Now," She began, as professionally as she could in the company of a friend, whom she'd rather ask if he'd visited a new exhibit devoted to Agatha Christie that was currently touring Tokyo. "What have you come up with thus far to show your recently-acquired knowledge or projects related to your talent? Perhaps I may be able to assist: unfortunately, our teachers are not joking when they tell you that if you fail to impress the steering committee, you may be held back another year."

Ones like Kuzukoma (Nagito x Fuyuhiko), Komazumi (Nagito x Mahiru), etc. Or my favorite Nagito BroTP of him and Sonia. They'd have such comfy tea dates. Rarely did they ever get annoyed when they were about to talk with Mari, but with how she was going on and on about the princess that she had bad history with and speculating on Sonia's company, they were getting a little annoyed.

"No, no... Gacchan isn't like that and neither is Hina-chan. They're both the sweetest guys ever. Gacchan has these adorable hamsters that are always with him that are called the Devas, and they're all so sweet! ... yeah, yeah, hehe, those are aaaalways really cute, right? Amai should make some for your skrong! Hm... but Amai doesn't know what they eat... you'll have to tell me later. Gacchan would probably really really like to see it, too! He loves aaaall animals so much and he always has so many treats for them with him and they all love him so much... hmm... it makes Amai swoon over him every time....

"Hina-chan is suuuuper cute, too, though. He's so sweet to me, and he always makes sure that Amai is taking care of myself. Haruka's mother made sure to call everyday, though with how much there was to report on and how busy her mother was, she didn't always have the chance to yap about her lovely and perfect girlfriend to her mother.

"No, mother, this is nothing upsetting, quite the opposite in fact. ...yes, I suppose you could say that, though it is, in truth much more than simply a close friendship. I'm convinced that she is my soulmate.

"There is a kindness and compassion to her that I have never seen in another person before, and with her respect for the dead... I can hardly think of anyone more sublime than her. The air of mystery that surrounds her only makes me all the more enchanted by her, and her expertise with ghosts and spirits...." She sighs softly before listening and chuckling. Why TOTK Ganondorf is the best Ganondorf in the series

This became a bit of an essay by accident hehe

Goes without saying: HUGE MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR THE FINAL BOSS AND ENTIRE STORY!!! All the gifs used are my own, and even though they're a bit crunchy, feel free to use them as you wish!

Anyways, starting at the start.

The Character

I'm not exactly a long time Zelda fan (botw was my first proper zelda game), and therefore didn’t know that much about Ganondorf before I saw him in the trailer and decided to research the lore like a crazy person. Based off of that, I think that Wind Waker Ganondorf is the best by far.

He had such an interesting aura to him- less like a power hungry madman and more like a wise old king who was also very evil, and his motivation made it difficult to see him as a true villain. As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. His whole plan revolved around the fact that the Gerudo people, his people, were left to suffer in the desert while the rest of Hyrule prospered, and he decided to take action. At least, that's what I remember. Please correct me if I have that messed up!!

Anyways, I think that motivation is what makes WW G-man cool- he's a total asshole, yes, but he has this kind of twisted honour that almost makes you feel bad for him. And this brings me to my one little gripe about TOTK Ganondorf- he doesn’t really seem to have a motivation? At least, not that I heard of. So in that sense, he doesn’t really feel as driven as WW Ganon. We never learn WHY he wanted to rule over Hyrule, he kinda just did. He wanted power, that much was obvious, but that was it. On the other hand though, it’s always fun to have a villain who’s evil for the sake of being evil, and it didn’t detract at all from his presence in the game.

And boy, is he a PRESENCE. Some of his lines are incredibly cold- "I will rule. That is what a king must do" WITH THE ORGAN IN THE BACKGROUND AND HIS DEMON KING TITLE ON THE SCREEN, or "Do not look away, you witness a king's revival" (the line that drove the whole community insane for a little while- if you know you know) as he draws his sword with all the confidence of a centuries old evil incarnate.

Even better- "I will be taking far more than your arm this time", as if Ganondorf, through the Calamity, hasn't taken away everything Link knew and loved already. This dude is crazy.

(And a little bonus that I found out about right before posting this- apparently in the Japanese version, he does have a very clear motive? But it was lost in translation? I need to research that a bit more though. If you know anything about that, do tell!!)

Now, with that out of the way...

The Build Up

Thematically, I think that the build up to his fight is pretty awesome, even compared to the other three G's. If you did the entire story (geoglyphs included) beforehand, then you know that this dude:

a) straight up killed someone with his bare hands (he wasn't holding the knife when he killed Sonia, so I kind of just assumed he broke her spine or something)

b) is so powerful that 7 of the strongest warriors in Hyrule WITH secret stones couldn't defeat him, and was only taken down by sealing his power away- which is still only a temporary solution

c) lived on after reawakening despite being an actual emaciated corpse

d) was so busted that even in (kind of) death, the essence of his power (the malice) that leaked out of his seal was strong enough on its own to completely DECIMATE Hyrule

So yeah, I was a little scared on my way down because I knew this guy was going to kick my ass (spoiler alert: he did).

The little gauntlet of monsters to fight as you descend was pretty sick, and serves as a fairly good warmup for the army later on. The silver lynel totally caught me off guard though. As you get closer to the lowest point in Hyrule, you end up amassing some of the most powerful weapons imaginable thanks to all the silver enemies, which got me feeling so goddamn strong! That's important later.

And eventually, getting to the Forgotten Foundation and realising that I was back in the prologue area as that scary music started back up sent chills down my spine.

And the music. THE MUSIC.

Give this a listen (youtube because soundcloud links are jank, sorry)- skip to about 2:00 because that's the bit I'm talking about!

As you get deeper and deeper, the music gets more and more intense- and if there’s one thing I absolutely adore about TOTK, it’s the dynamic music throughout (see example: THE DUNGEON THEMES). The use of music that changes as you go- and this is by far the best example.

At first, you don’t really notice it while you’re preoccupied. You’re more focused on weapons and monsters and all that mess. But the first time I really noticed it was, as I said, when I realised I was in the prologue. The cut up voice clips and the drone in the background are a little creepy, and remind you of what happened the last time you tried to fight this guy,

Then, it starts to develop once you walk past the mural. There’s the choral singing, the drone in the background picks up into something with more melody, and the entire run up to the boss is completely enemy free- it gives you time to let the circumstances sink in as the music swells and you approach the heart of the depths. Also, the music builds as you get deeper and deeper, which from what I know is a subversion from the usual "music building as you climb his tower" or whatever he's in normally. Very nice.

Idk about you guys, but I slow walked down there for the DRAMATIC EFFECT.

At about 3 minutes into the video is how it sounds when you dive into the imprisoning chamber, where it all started (and I'll talk more about the parallels between this and the prologue another time... THE TORCH AUGHHSYWJHFH) and keep trucking on through the gloom, the horror movie piano kicking in as you walk through the final tunnel and stand on the precipice overlooking the dark, unknown pit below...

And jump.

Then the track finally reaches its climax as everything starts to overlap, the bells and organ (i think thats what it is?) screaming at you in the background as you fall, making the song feel like an epic of vengeance. There's so much dread, and an underlying ominous/threatening feeling that encapsulates the fact that Ganondorf is the embodiment of an ancient evil, one that has tormented Hyrule for centuries- but at the same time, there's an element of finality and inevitability, because you're going to put that evil down, and make up for all the grief and the death and loss that constantly follows in his wake.

I mean, just listen to the last 30 seconds or so of that track and tell me you don't feel excited. In awe. Because I deadass teleported back up to the mural just to hear it again.

I think I got a little carried away there, but moving on to the bit you probably came here for…

The Fight

Phase one - The Demon King's Army

Remember how I mentioned that the earlier monsters and busted weapons make you feel powerful? This is basically that x10.

The whole sequence feels very epic, ESPECIALLY after the build up, and with the appearance of the Sages mirroring the attack of the Champions from BOTW, it almost feels like victory is assured already as you cut down hordes of monsters with practically no effort, all while the strings in the background kick in and get more intense with every wave.

This serves to make you feel even more like God- taking out waves and waves of fairly tough enemies made me feel like I was on top, like nothing could stand in my way. It's pretty cool, a good way of integrating the monster army you keep seeing in the cutscenes, and manages to keep the energy from the descent going pretty well, while also being a casual reminder that this Ganondorf bloke can summon world ending horrors at will. ESPECIALLY when the dungeon bosses come back to life and force the Sages to stay behind.

Phase two - The Menace Unleashed

Once again, the music goes absolutely crazy. The first phase feels intense, but still like the fight is only just beginning. Just an ambient drone, near silent as he approaches, picking up as you start to duel. No one is here to help- no Sages, no Zelda- just Link and Ganondorf, a rematch that's been in the making since 2006.

If the army battle makes you feel powerful, then the first few seconds of this fight are what takes that power away- because this guy is a total damage sponge and moved a lot faster than I could predict. Additionally, you can't fast travel outside to heal gloom hearts if you have medallions set up (i thought i was so smart for that too), so if you used all of your sunny food during the army, you're doomed.

Most of his attacks in this phase are fairly simple, with only one or two for each weapon he can wield (and tbh the switching weapons really threw me the first time), but like I said, he goes pretty fast. Therefore, if you're like me and can't differentiate some of his tells, you're also going to lose a lot of hearts very fast. And did I mention he gives you gloom hearts instead of normal damage? Again, no sunny food = death of the instant kind.

On top of the general stress of trying to get the timing down, there were a couple of moments in this phase alone that had me yelling something along the lines of "WHAT THE ACTUAL SHIT"- one of which being some of the tricks he pulls under certain conditions. For example; a standard looking sword attack where he swings once, then as you lower your shield to get a hit in, as you naturally would, he swings at you again. He also kicks you if you hang too close, and fires off some of his gloom attacks faster if you're trying to attack him as he charges. It makes him feel more like an actual person you're fighting, and stops you from hanging close and swinging wildly the whole time.

As well as that, he taunts and mocks you when you get hit- make any misstep or stumble into an attack, and he'll laugh and insult your skill while he casually walks up to you like the absolute gigachad he is. It's not like the Twilight Princess walk where it feels a bit slow- this walk made me feel THREATENED. Circling in the opposite direction when he circled me with the spear made me feel like a pro swordsman. On one hand, I thought the taunting was super cool as a mechanic! On the other hand it made me want to kill him even harder.

And the other moment that made my jaw drop? This guy. Can DODGE your regular attacks AND FLURRY RUSH. And by flurry rush I mean take a really tough/fast swing at you. BUT STILL.

For as long as I can remember, the perfect dodge and flurry rush have given Link an unfair edge over most enemies and bosses- it's an opening to deal mass damage with no counters. It’s made link OP against everything the game throws at him- up until right now. This highlights the fact that Ganondorf is no pushover- him and Link are evenly matched, and you’ll need some actual consistent skill to take him out. The good news is that your own flurries are still pretty powerful, and 5 or 6 are enough to start the next phase.

As the fight progresses and his health starts to go down, the music starts to build up more (at about 1:25 in the video above)- the barely present drums starting to speed up and get louder, accompanied by sporadic piano, more choral snippets, and an ominous undertone as their duel grows more intense, eventually building to a climax and slowing down a tad (2:45) as he activates his secret stone and transforms, beginning the third phase.

Phase three and four - Master of the Secret Stone

Well this one was certainly something. Once again I jumped out of my seat and YELLED when his health bar started to refill past the normal amount, all the way off of my screen. It just didn’t stop. There are no words to describe the primal fear of realising how insanely busted this dude was. I tried to get it on the gif up there, but that made the video too long to convert :(

The music here is my favourite bit of the whole phase- as you face down the powered up Ganondorf and his phantoms, you hear the familiar but melancholy motif of BOTW/Dark Beast playing around the same time the Sages show up once again to deal with said phantoms (at about 3:22). For a second it's just that- melancholy, encapsulating the same kind of hopelessness that followed Calamity Ganon 100 years ago. But at the same time, as your squad comes to assist, you're reminded of the Champions and their aid, and suddenly it feels like you could still turn the tides of this seemingly impossible battle. Just like you did with the Calamity.

Yes it was cool, and yes I nearly cried.

The phantoms were actually the worst for a minute or so- it takes a while for the all of the Sages to appear and lighten the burden, meaning that you end up needing to take on 2-5 of these guys at once as well as the real deal. This got me killed more times than I'd like to admit. Once all the Sages arrive, the arena becomes a complete warzone with everyone duking it out at once, the real Ganondorf’s attacks start to get faster and harder hitting, and he starts to dodge and rush you more often- even dodging more of your attacks and forcing you to flurry him, so if you don’t have your timing down, this is awful. Not to mention, it's very easy to lock on to the wrong Ganon, which makes it harder to block the real attacks with a shield.

And also, this is the point where he starts destroying literally all of your shields in just a few hits, meaning that if you can't dodge or parry, then it's only so long until you're left defenceless.

Aside from that, this phase plays out like the Phantom Ganon fight in the Castle until you get his health bar down about halfway, when he recalls the phantoms and biden blasts the Sages away, beckoning Link forwards and starting phase four, which is basically phase two again but insane.

This is where the fight- for me, at least- became incredibly difficult, since Ganondorf not only dodges your regular attacks, but also dodges your flurry rushes and counters with his own EVERY SINGLE TIME, forcing you to flurry rush again to hit him. Not only does this require perfect timing, but is also the only way to damage him for the remainder of this fight (unless you cheese it with arrows or sneak in some hits in while he's switching weapons- but the latter is dangerous since he still attacks faster when you're close).

A little video to emphasise the flurry rush thing; the timing for that second dodge had to be dead on. What you can't hear is me yelling something along the lines of "GOD, FINALLY" after dying to this phase many times and mashing the y button like my life depended on it. LOOK HOW FAST THAT MF IS ON THE SECOND ATTACK

The soundtrack becomes super crazy again, this time using the motif of Calamity Ganon/the Blights (starts at 5:00, and you can also hear it in the video above) and bringing back that sense of hopelessness again- but this time with with a strong side of excitement since you're now in the final stretch of the fight. Because the Blights were supposed to be the equal match for each Champion, this bit of the theme makes it feel like Ganondorf is an equal match to Link- which I know I've said already, but that's kind of the thing that's blown me away the most about the whole battle.

It's the fact that you can't just wail on him and spam flurry rushes without him countering you in some way- which in this case mostly consists of him dodging you and attacking back at an insane speed. This isn't like Calamity Ganon where you just hit and dodge for five minutes, this is an actual proper swordfight, and exactly what I'd been hoping for from the final boss!

Additionally, the Blight/Calamity motif (well, more like entire theme) represents his ties to Calamity Ganon, the force of nature that took Link 2 tries to beat (with death included), and it's use in this part of the battle tells you that right now, Ganondorf possesses the same level of destructive power as that thing- and he's sure as hell going to make sure you know that.

As well as the whole "dodging the flurry rush and forcing you to pull it off twice" thing, he also pulls out a few more projectile based attacks. These aren't too bad (WE GET THE RETURN OF ARCANE PING PONG FROM OOT), but he usually follows them up with a quick swing, making them a distraction that takes a while to get used to.

And finally, as a last little surprise, getting hit by any of his gloom projectiles in this phase takes away one of your maximum hearts. PERMANENTLY. Not like the gloom hearts, where you can get them back and then heal. Nope. That shit is gone gone.

Once you finally whittle down his ridiculous health bar, we launch into the customary "massive beast" style phase as he straight up just rips the secret stone out of his head and eats it, giving up his mind, body and soul for the sake of defeating Link, becoming a Dragon and escaping through the top of the arena.

Phase five - Draconified Demon King

So like I said above, the Demon Dragon is basically Dark Beast 2, except it's so much cooler! The cutscene does a great job of highlighting the insane size of this guy- it's like 3x the size of the already massive elemental dragons and emerges from the depths in a way that eerily resembles the Calamity, right down to the glowing yellow eyes. And yeah, that's probably the point, but it's still cool.

Luckily for Link, Zelda/the Light Dragon swoops in and rescues him from the jaws of death (literally), taking him high up into the air so he can attack from above. It's an absolute spectacle, and the epic style remix of the game's main theme that plays makes it even better, instilling the same level of awe that Dark Beast does- at least for me.

Just like DB, the fight has you up against a massive malice/gloom infused monster (the dragon, in this case), getting close and attacking it's weak points and then finishing it off by destroying the secret stone on it's head. There's a lot of downtime, which is kind of to be expected with this style of fight, but I honestly don't mind because these colossal battles are supposed to feel less like a Dark Souls boss and more like a victory lap- like a "you're Link, the legendary hero, slaying this massive beast in the name of Hyrule" kind of thing.

My personal favourite bit of this whole phase is the fact that when you dive down to the Dragon's weak points, Zelda dives down next to you to get underneath and catch you afterwards. So sick. I also really like the use of skydiving! It pairs super well with the music and made me think of that final trailer we got in April- like THIS is the epicness we were promised.

(and also dodging the fireballs was way more fun than slowly sidestepping a laser. sorry dark beast, but i gotta say it </3)

Final thoughts

I'm gonna be honest: I kind of forgot to compare his fight to the other 3 mainline ones, but doing that now would make this way too long! I just love the TOTK fight so much and needed to get it out.

While I'd still say that each Ganondorf (in the mainline games) has their own unique trait that makes them cool: OOT Ganondorf is the original, and the most cunning, WW Ganondorf has the best character and TP Ganondorf is the most evil by a mile- TOTK Ganondorf feels like a combination of those best traits (minus the characterisation) paired with the greatest final boss I've ever seen in a Zelda game, which makes him the best for me.

The first phase in particular was my favourite- wayyyyy back in April when I saw big G in the trailer, my first thought was "oh man i hope we get an actual sword fight boss instead of calamity ganon 2.0" AND MY PRAYERS WERE ANSWERED!!!

Ganondorf literally just rolled up, delivered some cold lines, and then kicked my ass with his cool sword. Many times. And I think that's exactly the kind of boss fight he deserves. I'm just so happy that it feels like we're in an actual duel, mano a mano, instead of just being able to chance a win like with Calamity.

a continuation of the last ask and your response: but what if it does become a point of contention between richie and eddie because richie is (rightfully) traumatized and concerned about leaving eddie alone and wanting to make sure he’s recovering but eddie is so tired of being smothered and even though it’s so different from his mother or myra he can’t help but feel the similarities and they have to come to a conclusion that they both have stuff they need to work on. i just love dysfunctional post-canon reddie where yes they’re in love with each other but they also underestimate how difficult it’s going to be to actually be together

ohhhhh yesss!!!! as much as i love writing cute and fluffy post-ch2 reddie, i think it’s also so so important to remember that their relationship probably wouldn’t be perfect right away. it would honestly probably be far from perfect. they haven’t seen each other in 27 years, and they have both gone through their own traumas in those years, and it will definitely take them both some time to work through their own and each other’s!

like im imagining the tension has been building up between the two of them for a while, and eventually one day eddie kind of snaps and compares richie to his mother or myra in a moment of frustration. this of course would hit both of them pretty hard, because richie KNOWS everything that sonia and myra have done to eddie, and the last thing he wants to be is just another iteration of control and possessiveness over eddie, and he’s hurt that he has made eddie feel that way. but he knows that this is a sensitive area for eddie, and he feels guilty about it, but he just can’t help but worry whenever he thinks about all the times eddie just narrowly missed death.

and eddie doesn’t really know what to feel, because he KNOWS that richie is just trying to care for him, but even though it is richie that doesn’t change how eddie feels about being fussed over about his health. he obviously doesn’t want to compare richie to his ex-wife, or even worse his mother, but he can’t help it. being smothered, no matter by who, has that same effect on him. he is traumatized, and that doesn’t magically go away. he loves richie, and he can appreciate that richie wants to make sure he’s okay, but eddie needs him to know that he’s not quite ready for that yet.

Keith and Emma: Huh…

The one in front was nice Prince Keith, not wicked Prince Keith.

Sad music could be heard in the distance and within the wings, actors waited for their cue.

The audience was so engrossed in the story that they didn’t notice that something was wrong.

(Did wicked Keith just decide to switch out? But why?)

He was so serious during rehearsals, so he shouldn’t have suddenly switched.

There was still some time before the next scene. The prince and the spirit stared at each other for the time being.

(I need to regain my composure now)

Keith: …

(Ah…)

At that moment, the look on Prince Keith’s face and his aura changed.

He became the prince who had fallen for the spirit, someone I saw many times during the rehearsals between the two of us…

Within the silent theater, the final scene began.

His gentle gaze that made all worries and troubles disappear locked the spirit’s heart in place.

Keith: ‘—If that’s the case, then let me heal your wounds. Even if it takes years, hundreds of years, even when this body can’t maintain its form and returns to a spirit.’ ‘I will love you.’

‘You stole my heart the first time we met in the forest.’

(To the spirit who had been alone all her life, the prince, who persisted with the love within his heart despite being of a different race, was as radiant as the sun and more beautiful than any jewel out there)

(Just imagining it made me want to lose myself in it)

As if to celebrate their love and communicate their feelings, actors appeared from the wings and danced like flowers.

And then the curtains fell—

The round of applause let us know that the performance was a success.

That night—

After getting ready to turn in for the night and sitting side by side in bed for a while, we were still stuck in the aftermath of the performance.

(It feels as if I was just in some magnificent dream. I really was on stage)

(I was shocked by wicked Prince Keith’s surprise, but it was still a precious experience)

Filled with happiness and relief, all the tension left my body as I leaned against Prince Keith.

Emma: Sonia was really pleased.

Keith: ‘This will improve the sales of my new work. I can still continue with being an author.’ She was in a really good mood when she said that at the party.

Emma: Speaking of being in a really good mood, the director was too. He’s invited you to perform on stage again.

Keith: “His” acting was so compelling so I’m happy he’s getting recognition.

Emma: You’re both getting recognition, you know?

Keith’s eyes widened and gave an embarrassed smile.

Keith: Since you were watching so closely, if you say so, then I guess so. I’m feeling a little more confident thanks to you two.

Emma: Just a little?

Keith: A…a lot more?

Emma: That’s what I think. I thought you looked so majestic and radiant on stage.

I leaned against his burly body and he patted my head.

(It’s like he’s thanking me)

Keith: By the way, I asked him why he switched out. But like I expected, he didn’t tell me.

Emma: Hehe, he’s a wicked one.

(But based on the look on Prince Keith’s face, he was aware)

I was the same. Something I heard between rehearsals came to mind.

Emma: I was surprised when you didn’t look nervous at all on the first day of rehearsal and showed a natural performance the director was looking for.

Alter!Keith: It’s probably because I’m used to acting like someone else.

Alter!Keith: That said, I’m just going through the motions.

Can’t compete with someone who really loves the piece of work.

Regardless of how skilled of an actor you are, it’s hard to perform with the same degree of emotion, interpretation, and enthusiasm as someone who loves the work.

(Perhaps that’s why he swapped out during the most important part of the performance)

He was my rehearsal partner and remembered the lines and actions, so there wasn’t an issue.

(But the main reason for that scene was…)

Keith: I especially liked the last scene where the two desperately tried to convey their feelings for each other and have reread it several times.

I found myself smiling as I guessed the reason why he didn’t tell him.

Keith: Also, Mireille asked us to come over to her estate some time. No doubt she’ll show us the painting.

Emma: I feel a bit embarrassed, but I’m looking forward to how the painting turned out.

Keith: Me too. I haven’t seen Mireille look that happy in so long…I’m glad I stood on stage. Ah, but it’s a little disappointing how the spirit’s face was covered by a hood.

Emma: She hid the fact that she wasn’t human until halfway through the story.

Keith: …I was a little relieved by that fact though.

Emma: Huh?

Keith: Your outfit and makeup made you look so lovely. I shouldn’t be thinking this, but I didn’t want anyone else to see you. I wanted to keep that look all to myself. 

Emma: Th…thank you. That makes me so happy.

My heart suddenly sped up and I averted my gaze.

(Why am I like this? Why are Prince Keith’s words making my heart race…?)

(I’m glad he didn’t tell me that before the performance)

Keith: Let’s go to sleep.

Emma: Yeah.

When we got under the covers, Keith tucked me in and gave me a kiss on the lips.

Even though this was part of our routine, my heart sped up even faster.

(Prince Keith looks nervous. His cheeks are a bit red)

Thinking back, I realized that it’s been a while since we lay in bed together since we were occupied by the performance and official duties.

(There were days where we didn’t even share a kiss…that’s why my heart’s racing)

Keith: Sorry…Emma.

Prince Keith suddenly planted his hand on the bed hovered over me.

The golden eyes gazing down at me were filled with heat…

(We can’t go to sleep like this)

Keith: I tried controlling myself, but after touching you, I couldn’t anymore. Can I kiss you again?

Emma: …Yes.

His soft olive-colored hair grazed my forehead and our lips met.

Our kiss gradually deepened and his tongue entwined with mine, bringing pleasure.

Even though we were just kissing, I found myself rubbing my thighs together and a large hand stroked my leg.

I wrapped my arms around him and pulled him close enough to feel his heartbeat.
