Happy one year anniversary to Coco! This movie has really done so much to me, I felt like I had to do something for it! If anyone hasn’t seen it yet, I strongly recommend you do! You won’t regret it! Gross personal ramblings under the cut :’D

If you would have told me a little over a year ago, my career path would be flipped on its head, I would have never believed you. For my entire life, I’ve wanted to be a vet. I went to college for Biology for exactly that reason. I could think of no better life than bringing happiness to people and animals through medicine. 

But, after working in the field for a little over a year, I saw that the profession was not at all what I thought it was. Granted, I still hold a great deal of respect for vets and what they do, but 90% of the time, they are not delivering good news. They’re telling someone their dog has cancer. They’re telling someone their young kitten has an incurable disease that cannot be cured and that leads to a slow, painful death. The harsh reality of this profession hit me hard. I knew it wasn’t all going to be playing with puppies all day. But I never expected that.

For months, I was in what I classify as a “mini depression”. I found myself laying in bed a lot, not really wanting to do anything. Everything seemed so pointless. For the first time in nearly a decade, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. But then, on dreary, damp day in May of 2018, I was flipping around on my cable box for something to watch. Then I saw Coco listed. I had wanted to see it, but the time of year with school kept me from doing so. So I decided not would be a good time. Nothing else to do.

I absolutely LOVED it! I watched it multiple times over the next couple days until my rent was up. But then I realized, during that hour and a half or so the movie was running, I would forget all about my stress, my problems, my depression. It took me to another world for at least a little bit of a break from the real world. And that break made me so happy. And that was exactly what I had been looking for! Ultimately, I want to use my life to make the world a better place. I want to make people happy. And now I had another way to do that. I could give people that escape from their problems that this film had given me through the power of animation. And although I have a lot of improving to do, I’m looking forward to something again for the first time in a long time.

This movie has inspired me to return to college for Animation and in doing so has given me a new purpose, a new hope. So to me, this is so much more than just an animated movie. This movie is a part of me.
