this turned so long please forgive my autism

not even necessarily bc the neiderman books start with fallen hearts, i just feel like heaven ends up this mutated evolution of a vc andrews protagonist where she has to have her way being a total fuckin brat

and heres the thing!!!! reading web of dreams is So Repugnant im on my second runthrough and i feel like neiderman loves to do this thing where he almost parodies andrews’ original voice— we’re met with these frail little waifs who suffer Endlessly and then they die bad.

and i mean, considering cathy and audrina being andrews’ authentic protags, this could be considered an accurate, if broad, way to assess her work.

it’s in the details of it, though; heaven in book 3, annie and leigh are all subjected to cartoonish levels of horror; tony tatterton as an antagonist is admittedly interesting if not complex but neiderman makes a mistake in book 5 of just presenting him as an unrepentant predator. it makes him lose all of that complexity for me. if he’s just hurting these girls without any reason, why do i give a fuck if he dies?

jillian, additionally because of book 5, just seems like an absolute monster. like comparable to my actual mom. her exchanges with leigh are nonsensically self-centered.

the one dynamic i really find interesting in the later books is jillian’s dynamic with tony. did she actually offer up leigh like that??? da mystery…

i think a hallmark of andrews’ authentic work is that evil parents are people as much as they are parents. i mean hell, kitty and cal in book 1 hooked me for the entire series. they are awful and gross and reading what they’re like is uncomfortable but i still recognized it as a genuine sad moment when kitty died, or when cal has the conflict he does (though cal is ……. yikes.)

i could go on for ages. it turns out these books are the only ones i can stand while i’m at work lmao. i keep trying to start mary by nat cassidy but a cis man writing about a menopausal woman put me off quick

Anyone else watched this series on Lifetime?? Like I read the books 2929291718272828 times. Just about literally. I read alllll the books. This series and many more. This and Ruby are my fav. I've watched the first 3 movies of this series and while I know some stuff is missing and a LOT feels rushed, they hit the high points. Ruby is coming out next weekend and I have it set and ready to record lol.

so i was curious about the director of route 666 and what exactly he was thinking and. it got weird. paul shapiro directed route 666, and it was the only spn episode he ever did. but he worked on dark angel (no episodes with jackles but he was on the show), smallville (multiple jackles episodes), and tru calling, which renamed one of its characters jensen after he auditioned. shapiro's most recent credit is on tv adaptations of two books, titled heaven and dark angel. the main character's name is heaven leigh casteel. at this point I think every person in the us could do six degrees of spn separation.
