2018 Kia Stinger GT joins Roadshow's long-term test fleet
"If there's a more audacious new car this year from a major automaker, we have yet to drive it." That's Roadshow reviews editor Jon Wong talking about the new Kia Stinger, the car that won Vehicle of the Year in our 2018 Shift Awards. Indeed, the Stinger is one of the most talked-about cars in the industry right now. We've had the opportunity to drive it both at home and abroad, but a car this important -- and this heavily discussed -- is absolutely worthy of an extended test. That's why we've added a 2018 Stinger GT to our long-term fleet.

How we spec'd it
Kia offers the Stinger with two engines across five different trim levels, and for our long-term test, we're going all-in. That means our test car is a Stinger GT2 with all-wheel drive, an all-inclusive trim that stickers for $52,300 including $900 for destination. All GT-trim Stingers come with the same powertrain: a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available on every version of the Stinger for an additional $2,200, and while we love the idea of spending a year with a rear-wheel-drive car, this thing will probably end up doing winter duty in Detroit, where all-wheel-drive will be super-duper helpful. Picking the top-level GT2 means we get the full smattering of premium amenities. Our car has heated and cooled Nappa leather seats, a heated steering wheel, LED headlights, a sunroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, power liftgate, upgraded Brembo brakes, 19-inch wheels on summer tires and more.

On the technology front, the GT2 is similarly rich with features. Front and center in the cabin, an 8-inch touchscreen display houses a full suite of infotainment tech, including built-in navigation, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. There's also a head-up display, and an LCD display inside the gauge cluster controls myriad adjustable vehicle settings. Driver assistance systems are in similarly high supply, the GT2 packed with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic collision warning and more. Here's hoping we don't have to test that last one. All that's left to do on a Stinger GT2 is pick your color. And while we adore the vibrant Micro Blue Pearl and slick Ceramic Silver, we decided to go for the endlessly photogenic HiChroma Red with the full-black interior.

Initial impressions
The Stinger arrived in Los Angeles in late February, and after a couple weeks with yours truly, was handed off to news and features editor Kyle Hyatt. Between the two of us, we've put about 1,500 miles on the Stinger so far. Straight away, we're big fans of the Stinger's cabin, though we regret to note that, with only 3,000 miles on the odometer, there's already a pronounced rattle coming from somewhere in the back (Kyle says he's determined to find it). Otherwise, things are mostly peachy-keen inside the Stinger. "Interior finishes are lovely," Kyle writes. "Everything you touch is nice and well thought out." I concur, there's a lot to like here, both in terms of comfort and personalization. The seats are great, and super supportive. And we both enjoy the configurable aspects of various systems. You can change the head-up display colors, the entry-exit chime and even adjust the number of times the turn signals will flash during one-touch lane-change signaling.

That said, the low-slung shape creates a few issues. "Long-torso-having drivers may suffer from a lack of headroom, would love to see the driver's seat adjust down further," notes the decidedly tall Kyle Hyatt. I can't say I have similar issues, at 5 feet, 8 inches, but I do agree with my colleague with another big issue: visibility. "Visibility sucks, rearview camera helps. Side cameras would be wonderful. Blind-spot detection is a life-saver," Kyle writes. It's worth mentioning that Kia will offer a 360-degree camera -- as well as wireless phone charging and heated rear seats -- on the new, special edition Stinger Atlantica. We both like the powertrain, the twin-turbo engine providing tons of thrust with a robust exhaust note. This is a car that eats up highway miles with aplomb, as we've seen on a couple road trips thus far. It's an absolutely exceptional grand tourer. But after a couple of spirited runs through Southern California canyons, we have a few quibbles.

"Needs more sway bar, particularly in the rear, and could use a stiffer sport suspension setting. Car bounces mid-corner and is very easy to upset," Kyle notes. But on the other hand, "Comfort mode is great, even on crappy LA roads." We both find the upgraded Brembo brakes to be fine most of the time, but they heat up rather quickly. It makes us question the possibility of overall brake fade if used aggressively for extended periods of time -- something we'll have to test in the coming months. Still, as a daily driver, the Stinger is exceptional. It's powerful and poised, and is genuinely enjoyable to toss around on back roads. We never get tired of driving it. Ever. Good thing, as we've still got 11 more months of Stinger life to enjoy. Vehicle Testing, the Motor Trend Way
One of the evergreen questions we get from readers and viewers concerns our testing regimen. “How do you get that 0–60 time?” “Do you use a dragstrip?” “Who drives?” “What equipment do you use?” “Do you ‘correct’ for weather?” Beyond these basics, many ask why numbers so often vary from one vehicle-testing outfit to another. Below, we answer all of these questions and probably even answer some you didn’t know you had.
The Basics
When: Only after each vehicle is “checked in” does a wheel turn in the name of testing. First, we top off the fuel with the manufacturer-recommended grade of gasoline. This is typically the same one the EPA has used and published for their fuel-economy estimates. This is also the grade of gasoline shown in our charts on the Recommended Fuel line. However, in Southern California, “Premium” grade means 91 octane is the best we can get from commercial pumps, not 93. This sometimes means not meeting manufacturer-supplied acceleration estimates, but not often. Occasionally, when a vehicle like a Nissan GT-R or McLaren 720S hasn’t been engineered to run optimally on 91, we’ll allow a can of octane boost to be added, or if a racetrack dispenses higher-octane gasoline, we’ll use that for lapping. For electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), we also top off the battery packs with an electrical source a couple hundred yards from the test surface. For hybrids, we attempt to charge the batteries as best we can by driving a few miles in charge-optimized or charge-retaining mode, if available.
Next, we ensure the tires are inflated to the manufacturer-recommended pressure, often stipulated on the doorjamb or under the fuel door. Occasionally these displayed values are for the maximum number passengers and max cargo load (not what we’re looking for), so we often dive into the owner’s manual to locate “normal” cold-inflation pressures. Because hot-lapping a race track is a “special circumstance” with different safety concerns and goals compared to our routine testing, we use the manufacturer-recommended hot-tire inflation guidelines. This way we can check the pressures during the event to ensure we’re getting the most from the car. As a safety precaution, we ensure all the lug nuts are at their manufacturer-recommended tightness with a professional torque wrench. Underhood, we check oil and coolant levels and for obvious signs of “that ain’t right.” Finally, we jot down the vehicle’s VIN, odometer reading, tire specifications, and other various attributes/available settings for posterity. Finally, we put each vehicle on a set of calibrated Rebco racing scales and record corner weights, their sum, and the percentage front/rear distribution. This is what is quoted in our articles and shown on our specifications panels as Curb Weight.
Who: Instrumented testing is different from road testing. It requires years of track experience, specialized skills, and instinctive muscle memory to extract the best performances from all the different types of vehicles we test: compact cars/hatches, sedans, wagons, crossovers, sport utilities, pickup trucks, and yes, sports cars, supercars, and an occasional hypercar. There are currently three staffers (each with more than 20 years of testing experience) who are qualified to perform Motor Trend’s instrumented testing: technical director Frank Markus in Detroit (weather permitting), testing director Kim Reynolds, and road test editor Chris Walton, the latter two both in Southern California. Associate road test editor Erick Ayapana is in the process of training up (and is showing great “feel” and talent) to fill in should any of our regular test drivers be unavailable.
Where: We test in dry, temperate, still weather for the most part. Our Southern California home usually cooperates on the first two fronts, and when winds kick up, running in two directions and averaging the acceleration results mostly cancels the wind effect. Some testing takes place in extremely cold, hot, or humid weather, and the effects of these parameters are compensated for with our weather-correction protocol (more about which follows). Next, we use a flat, level surface with consistent pavement. For straight-line testing, this means at least a half mile for ample shut down and braking. For handling tests, the ideal minimum “black lake” size is 300 by 800 feet. We try to use the same venue whenever possible for ultimate repeatability. Today, Auto Club Speedway/Dragway in Fontana, California, is used for the vast majority of our 250-plus annual tests, and Mojave Desert–adjacent Hyundai-Kia California Proving Ground and Honda Proving Center, plus FCA Arizona Proving Ground are used for our Of The Year programs. In the Detroit area, we use Milan Dragway and occasionally General Motors’ Milford Proving Ground. In a pinch, we’ll use local dragstrips, and we make it a rule to always run in the direction that is opposite to the race direction. Why? Because dragstrips aren’t the real world. The launch area is often “rubbered in,” and as with much of the race surface, it’s also coated with a non-representative traction aid. And believe it or not, street tires actually do not hook up well on the race-prepped surface and lose traction more easily than on plain old pavement.
Acceleration Testing
How: We typically switch off traction-control systems and experiment with launch-control systems when so equipped. We do not pull fuses to deactivate any such systems if there is no standard way to do so. We run from zero to the maximum practical speed increment above the quarter mile. As does the NHRA, we subtract a “1-foot” (about 11.5 inches in reality) rollout from the launch to replicate dragstrip time measurement equipment. Dragstrips from coast to coast and the NHRA started the whole quarter-mile acceleration craze, and these remain the best practical and legal way for most owners to test their own cars. We want our numbers to match those acquired in this way. We experiment with launch techniques (brake torquing automatics to fully energize the torque converter, varying the launch rpm and amounts of wheelspin on manuals, etc.), then shift as quickly as possible while depressing the clutch and lifting off the throttle in three-pedal manuals. If there’s a sport/sport plus mode, drag race mode, sport drive, or any other performance-enhancing setting, we’ll start with those and work backward to see if it indeed helped. They often do not. We don’t “speed shift” manual transmissions. To date, only two manufacturers (select Chevrolet and Porsche vehicles) have engineered a “no-lift-shift” protocol that allows the driver to keep the throttle fully depressed while momentarily pressing the clutch and shifting to the next gear at or near the tachometer’s redline. We do use these manufacturers’ standard performance-enhancing feature.
We record data to an SD card with Racelogic’s Vbox satellite data-acquisition system, sampling at either at 20Hz or 100Hz (meaning 20 or 100 data points per second). Because the test driver can view/review each quarter-mile pass and iterate techniques to arrive at the best result, the number of runs varies. In the end, we typically select a vehicle’s single “best” acceleration performance (or best pair of passes on a windy day), but sometimes that’s a judgment call. Why? One pass might have the quickest 0–60 time and another might have the fastest quarter-mile time or speed. They’re usually the same run. However, there are times when we need to pick one over the other, and we never blend two different runs.
Weather Correction
Why: In an attempt to ensure fair comparisons between cars with internal combustion engines tested in the high-desert heat of summer and the dense cold of a Michigan winter, we record ambient weather conditions using a Computech RaceAir system. With that data tied to each vehicle, we then use the Society of Automotive Engineers’ SAE J1349 procedure as a guide to correct all acceleration results to standard operating conditions: 77 degrees F (25 C), 29.2348 inches mercury (Hg) barometric pressure (99 kPa), and zero percent relative humidity. This procedure also levels the field for multiple cars tested on a given day that might start out cool and humid but become blazing hot and dry for the 10th car tested. Some of our competitors use this same correction method, some do not, and many others do not use a weather correction at all. Other than car-to-car variations, this is the main reason published test numbers often vary for a given model of vehicle. It’s worth noting that the correction factor is reduced for turbocharged engines, for hybrids, and turbocharged hybrids because electric motors and turbochargers are not affected much by swings in barometric pressure (turbos reach a preset boost pressure regardless of intake air pressure). Because supercharged engines tend to add a fixed level of boost, they get the full J1349 correction. So far, pure battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell cars have no correction applied to them; although we know that they’re affected by hot ambient temperatures, we don’t yet know (nor does anybody else) how to reliably correct for it.
Example 1: Two identically equipped 2018 Dodge Durango 4 R/T sport utilities separated by 2,000 miles and just 7 pounds in curb weight were tested a week apart in December 2017: one in sunny Southern California (72.1 degrees F, 6 percent relative humidity, 28.70 inHg) and the other in chilly Michigan (29.3 degrees F, 74 percent relative humidity, 30.21 inHg). Because the Durango R/T’s naturally aspirated engine loves cool, dense air, the Michigan test vehicle was much quicker than California tester—until we applied the J1349 standard. Here, the correction factor added time to the Michigan data and subtracted from the California data. Look below for how the final computed results agreed.

Example 3: A twin-turbocharged 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio was tested on a hot 91.2-degree day in the high desert, 23 percent humidity with a low barometric pressure of 27.26 inHg. These conditions, applied to the above Corvette, would result in a fairly substantial correction factor. Turbos, however, receive “half” the usual weather correction (as the turbo with a blow-off valve naturally compensates for barometric pressure but not for the heat).

What its like to own an 3rd gen Miata.
I own a 2008 mx-5 GT with a power retractable hardtop roof.
2.0 liter DOHC MZR engine with a 6 speed automatic transmission with sport mode and paddle shifters. Obviously rear wheel drive with 17 inch alloy rims.
I've had it a little over a year and I bought it with 97k miles and so far its siting at 105k miles. I beat the shit out of it all the time and never had issues.
Reliability: not once has this car never started for me. From enduring 95 degree summer days and -5 Degrees with -10 degree wind chills in the winter, and driving on Chicago roads, this car is durable. I haven't had to replace any parts. No issues to speak of at all. I'm a young guy and I tend to beat it up and for a 10 year old car with over 100k miles I am impressed needless to say.
Handling: Like any Miata of previous and future generations it handles like a dream. I haven't owned many cars (09 mazda 6, 07 eclipse, 09 Altima, 05 buick century) in my short life so I don't have much to compare. It goes where you want it to. I love that the steering wheel gives feed back so you always know what your tires are doing. Its the heaviest Miata but only by 200lbs. However other owners have complained about the body having too much distance to roll during a hard turn. I would agree but a 300$ set of sway bars easily fixes that. Drifting is pretty fun and easy to accomplish.
Power: stock 158 hp isn't much, but for a car so light its definitely enough. Car and driver clocked the mx-5 0-60 at 6.5 seconds while other sources put it closer to 6.9. The Mzr is a tough bastard. I recently had my catalytic converters fail so I replaced the manifold with headers and wider downpipe. here are some photos The new exhaust does add an extra kick you can feel. I'm just disappointed with how loud it is. It gets very raspy
Comfort and utility: It has heated leather seats, power windows, mirrors and locks. it has a button on the door handle to lock and unlock. its not a push start but you dont need to insert a key to start it up. its a little plastic handle that attaches to the ignition that will start the car if the key is present.
It has 2 seats which are bucketed and very comfortable, but for some reason it has 4 cup holders, 2 of which are pretty intrusive of interior space because they jut out an inch and a half from the door. The top folds down in a cabin behind the seats so trunk space is not affected. If the top is up the space behind the seats can be used for storage of some small tools or packages but goodluck fishing them out once they are back there.
surprisingly the truck is a good size and can fit a suitcase and 2 full back packs! I can even operate the top with bikes strapped to the back
so to sum it up -
TL:DR - Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy a miata, and I've never seen a sad person in a Miata

But it doesn’t cost much of anything, it’s easy, and, yes, diminishing the impact you have on the world will make a difference. Follow these 25 tips for a cheaper, more efficient and, of course, greener life.
1. Set your thermostat comfortably low in the winter and comfortably high in the summer. Install a programmable thermostat that is compatible with your heating and cooling system.
2. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. They produce 75% less heat (i.e. energy) than regular light bulbs and can last up to 10 times longer.
3 . Air dry dishes instead of using your dishwasher's drying cycle.
4. Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use. This is not bad for your computer and hasn’t been since the days of mainframe computing.
5. On average, idle machines use 11 percent of a home’s electricity. Turn them off! Plug electronics into power strips and turn thepower strips off when the equipment is not in use.
6. Lower the thermostat on your hot water heater to 120° F.
7. Take short showers (5 minutes) with high-efficiency showerheads. Skip the bath.
8. Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.
9. If you’re buying a new car in an urban center with bumper-to-bumper traffic, check out a hybrid. If you usually use your car for long stretches on the highway, an efficient gas engine—or better yet, modern diesel engine—may be even more eco-friendly than the hybrid. And while you’re driving around in your old vehicle be frugal with the gas and brakes. Speeding ,rapid acceleration and braking wastes gasoline.
10. With nothing more than proper insulation, most homes can cut their bills by over 30%. Check the insulation levels in your attic, exterior and basement walls, ceilings, floors, and crawl spaces.
11. Check for holes or cracks around your walls, ceilings, windows, doors, lights and plumbing fixtures, switches, and electrical outlets that can leak air into or out of your home. Caulk and insulate everywhere.

16. Set your thermostat as low as is comfortable in the winter and as high as is comfortable in the summer. Make sure you’re winter temperature is not higher than your summer temperature and vice-versa.
17. Clean or replace filters on furnaces at least once a month.
18. Bleed trapped air from hot-water radiators once or twice aseason. If you don’t know what this means, call a professional.
19. Place heat-resistant radiator reflectors between exterior walls and the radiators. And make sure not to put heat-absorbing furniture—like a couch—in between the radiator and the room.
20. Turn off kitchen, bath, and other exhaust fans within 20 minutes after you are done cooking or bathing.
