i continue to go to the teen wolf subreddit and regret it. i apparently enjoy punishment.

derek hale should've been allowed to connect with his sister and malia.

he should've been allowed to talk about his traumas and show vulnerability. even just a little bit.

it's ridiculous that he never gets to say page's name when peter can just go about pulling lies out his ass and jennifer uses paige to try and garner his sympathy.

one of my favorite derek moments is in riddled where he talks to scott about speaking with talia and telling him about the hales being protectors of beacon hills. it's so soft and it connects derek and scott as people.

he should've been allowed to talk about his dead sister and his dead family. it doesn't ruin his character. it would've enhanced it.

he can be multifaceted.

learning more about the hales as people would've deepened the lore and helped the world building.

imagine if we'd gotten the names of those kate had killed? of the human kids. of the werewolves inside.

if we'd gotten to know a little about laura hale and what she was actually like instead of her being the dead girl in the woods.

if cora and derek had actually had one fucking moment of "i thought you were dead and i'm glad you're not"

if malia tate got to figure out what being a hale was to her and what that legacy meant outside of peter because she had a right to it too. and if her and derek formed a we hate peter club that met on thursdays for after school milkshakes where he helped her with school work.

if derek got talk to someone, anyone and not be isolated and alone and the audience locked out all the damn time.

but no we needed another tortured male character who never got peace.

here we can see the wheels turning in peter hale's mind as he decides how he's going to lie his pants off without catching on fire.

having re-watched visonary now i think they tried to explain cora a little bit but it's weak.

she is the one telling stiles the cold open story of derek encountering hunters, peter saving him and them hiding under the nematon for two days.

she says: "waiting. hiding. that's what were told to do when the hunters find us. hide and heal."

and they tried to explain why derek had zero idea who deaton was in the 1st season by having cora say this:

"they keep us connected to humanity but they're a secret even within in the pack. sometimes only the alpha knows who the emissary is. derek and i had no idea about deaton."

the world will never know because teen wolf's timeline is made of duct tape, string cheese and the little slips of paper you get from fortune cookies.

If Cora was Stiles' age, wouldn't she have been in his grade before the fire? He knew of Derek and the Hale family but it just seems like Cora was written in last minute.

here is what the timeline establishes:

all of season 1-3B takes place in 2011.

the hale fire was six years prior to the start of wolf moon. stiles is speaking hyperbolically when he says it was 10 years ago. we know it was six from what derek tells scott in magic bullet.

derek: six years ago, my sister and I were at school, and our house caught fire.

it's established that cora was 11 at the time of the hale fire in 2005. this comes from frayed during her and peter's conversation.

cora:  you've known me for seventeen years! peter: i knew you for��eleven, leaving the last six unaccounted for. and i'm not particularly fond of things unaccounted.

she's 17 in visionary.

visionary takes place during the fall 2011 semester of the main pack's junior year.

in comparison to the others:

allison turned 17 in the tell which takes place at the end of january 2011. allison says she was held back due to all the moving around. she's the oldest in their cohort.

lydia turned 17 on march 19th in party guessed during season 2 on the worm moon. we know it was her 17th birthday due to the conversation lydia and natalie have about lorraine's ashes in time of death in season 4 which takes place during the spring semester 2012 of lydia's junior year.

natalie: because she wanted you to do it... when you turned eighteen. don't ask me why. but, since there's only a few weeks 'til that, i suppose now is as good a time as any.

stiles would've turned 17 in april according to his official birthday of april 8th.

scott didn't turn 17 until september as is official birthday is september 16th.

malia turned 17 on november 28th making her the youngest of their cohort.

other odds and ends:

theo was in the fourth grade with stiles and scott making him their age. his birthdate is incorrectly listed as 1998.

jackson was born june 5th so he turned 17 between seasons 2 and 3A.

malia was 9 years old at the time of the car accident that killed her mother and sister which puts it in 2003. 2 years before the hale fire.

now while we can acknowledge the real reasons why cora's timeline is so shaky is because they winged a lot of it but what's the fun in that? here on buckybarness dot tumblr dot com we do teen wolf academia.

now one does wonder how scott, stiles, lydia and isaac didn't know cora but there could be viable reasons for that.

i discovered that the law changed in california in 2000 to raise the kindergarten enrollment age to 5 years old by september 1st. prior to this if a child turned 5 on or before december 2nd they could enroll.

they all would've started kindergarten in 1999.

this might be why scott and malia are in the same school year as lydia and stiles rather than being in the year behind.

if they'd had the foresight they should've had allison turn 18 in season 1 and have her a legitimate full year older than the rest because like she's only 3 months older than lydia so it seems a bit odd she's so embarrassed by turning 17 when she has a birthday so close to lydia and stiles. for someone turning 18 and being a sophomore due to being held back? that'd be embarrassing to someone in the american school system.

now cora could've been born in late 1993 to early-mid 1994. she could've been a grade ahead if she was closer in age to allison than to scott. i do strongly suspect that talia and corrine had overlapping pregnancies and being pregnant at the time is one of the reasons talia coerced corrine into keeping her pregnancy with malia.

the tates could've had malia start school later than the rest because she would've been 4 at the start of the year rather than 5 even if the law at the time allowed it. she just joined the rest as juniors when she returned to society because it made sense to keep her with the friends she'd made and she was 17.

if cora was in the grade above she could've been in middle school while the others were still in elementary school or maybe both malia and cora attended different schools due to zoning.

maybe they were homeschooled.

we'll never really know but it's interesting to think about.

I am so confused about the timelines in teen wolf. How old should Cora be?? Did the fire happen at day or night?? Why were Derek and Laura the only ones not there?? I wished we got way more Hale family flashbacks especially since they had an actor that could of done it :(

i've always suspected in my heart of hearts that part of why jeff didn't reveal much about the hales in the main show was because he did want to possibly do a prequel series at some point but it never materialized.

the teen wolf timeline can be difficult because jeff davis sometimes doesn't understand how linear time works but we know enough.

cora is 17 years old in 3A. she was 11 years old at the time of the fire in 2005 and she is the same age as the rest of the pack.

why don't scott, stiles, isaac, boyd and lydia know her? we don't know. my leading guess is she went to a different school due to zoning.

as for why derek and laura were at school when the fire happened? ;¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hi! Where is it said that Derek wasn't in BH for his senior year? I've seen this a lot, but I can't remember it from canon. Love your posts in the Sterek tag, good discussions!

oh my sweet summer child. teen wolf never tells you these things explicitly so on this episode of heather versus the teen wolf timeline we'll be discussing derek hale's age.

derek was very much 16 when the fire happened. i do not understand how people think he was older.

the parallels between derek and scott are very, very obvious and pointed. one of the big reasons scott and derek clash in season 1 is because derek has a difficult time seeing scott as scott. he projects a lot of his anger at his younger self onto scott.

like code breaker pretty much confirms this:

"you're not in love, scott! you're sixteen years old! you're a child!"

you just know derek wishes he could go back to tell his 16 year old self this. kate and her actions weren't his fault but derek cannot let go of the shame and guilt at this point. he isn't there yet.

i think another thing that makes it obvious derek was 16 when kate got her claws into him is bringing ian nelson back for s4.

visionary is again heavy on the parallels between scott and derek. we understand that derek is a child here. he's a high schooler. so kate de-aging derek to the age where he'd trust her? the implications couldn't be more clear. the audience is meant to associate ian nelson with high schooler derek.

in magic bullet derek tells scott: "six years ago, my sister and i were at school, and our house caught fire."

wolf moon takes place in janurary 2011 so six years previous puts the hale fire occurring in roughly late 2004/early 2005. i personally go with early 2005.

stiles's obsession with the hale fire/derek also makes sense if it occurred after claudia's death claudia died in early 2004 shortly before his 9th birthday. this would've been an event that captured his attention for multiple reasons.

derek's quote from magic bullet also informs us laura was still in school. some argue he means college or something which i don't believe. derek couldn't have graduated before laura.

i think laura was a senior and derek was still a sophomore and that this took place only months after paige's death and his grief was taken advantage of by kate.

laura didn't know what happened or who was after them. she took her little brother and fucking ran as far away as possible only returning 3 months before wolf moon to investigate.

i think kate was sent to beacon hills by gerard to look into paige's suspicious death because he had been in town when it happened along with the three other packs.

remember he attacked duecalion and was clearly aware of kali and ennis too. he knows they killed one of ennis's pack members brutally and being the smart, devious man he is might have put the math together like peter did. teenagers are perfect candidates for the bite and ennis had just lost one and than an otherwise healthy girl dies in suspicious animal attack at the same time a bunch of alphas were the same place?

remember what kate says in code breaker when confronted by chris?

"i did what I was told to do."

kate was following gerard's orders.

in conclusion though, derek didn't graduate from beacon hills high school as he and laura had left by then so those aren't his initials.

stiles is just sentimental and missing derek so he gets gooey at seeing the same initials.
