You know, since watching the new season of Heartstopper I really want to listen to "ur so pretty" by Wasia Project all the time because it's a great song but I can't! Because every time I hear it I remember that the lyrics "I'm so scared that the moments we shared/won't happen again/I don't want this to end" play in the background of Nick processing how Charlie was bullied and his subsequent self harm and frankly if anyone needs me I'm over here on the floor curled in the fetal position

seven, heartstopper, & the love of queer childhood
Please picture me in the trees I hit my peak at seven
Seven has been one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs since it came out in 2020. Its placement on the album, the structure of its lyrics, and even the production highlight the themes of a childhood bond that stretches beyond concrete memory and, in my opinion, the experience of being a queer kid.
Month ago, Alice Oseman said in an Instagram story that seven is a Tara/Darcy song. When I watched s2.ep8 of Heartstopper and seven came on as Tara and Darcy repeated declared their (romantic, sapphic/lesbian) love for each other, I cried. As it continued over the prom "after party" scene, I sobbed.
At its core, Heartstopper is about queer youth and found family, bonds that go deeper than the average teenage friendship. There's a lightness that runs through the show, even as difficult subjects are navigated. Darcy's abusive mother, Nick's struggle to support Charlie, Charlie's suffering mental health. So much queer media gets driven to dark, hopeless places. There's a reason the Bury Your Gays trope is so infamous. Heartstopper is subversive in its joy and hopefulness. I can't think of a better Taylor song to fit that message than seven.
I've been meaning to tell you I think your house is haunted Your dad is always mad and that must be why
I think you should come live with me and we can be pirates then you won't have to cry
While these lyrics aren't included in the scene, I think the context matters (especially the next line but we'll get to that). There's this innocent perspective of living in an unsafe or abusive home, that, regardless of the actual cause, leads the narrator to ask the muse to run away with them. In an earlier episode, Nick and Charlie talk about running away to Paris together. In the comics, Darcy jokes about moving in with Tara. During the sleepover in episode 1, the squad jokes about moving in with Tao. Heartstopper is about more than just Nick and Charlie. Since season one, we've seen the group find each other or become closer. The reason the show works is that, despite the realities of homophobia, transphobia, mental illness, etc., there is joy and safety and protection in the friend group.
Or hide in the closet
When the lyrics come back after an instrumental break, the edit of the song/scene highlights this lyric. Which makes sense, considering a major theme of the season was the realities of coming out and being out. But you won't have to...hide in the closet isn't really about being out and open to the entire world or your family. It's about not having to hide around the people who truly love you for who you are.
During the fight between Darcy and her mother at the end of ep7, Darcy yells My friends love me. As in, "even if you don't love or accept me the way I am, I know the people who do." The moment over which seven plays is the moment where Darcy lets down her guard long enough to accept and give that love from/to Tara. And then we watch the rest of the group give and accept that love with each other.
Passed down like folk songs, the love lasts so long

Okay so i have seen endless tiktoks and (rightful!!) excitement about the Wasia Project’s ‘ur so pretty’ in ep8 of Heartstopper and how it made people (including me) cry BUT I have seen absolutely NOTHING about Seven by Taylor Swift being in the same episode and how it creeping in whilst Darcy and Tara are coming to terms with Darcy’s unaccepting parents was completely and utterly devastating!!!
I know it’s likely because it’s wonderful that the Wasia Project is getting rep as they completely should be, but Seven being so situationally accurate for the scene it was in made me such an emotional mess and I LOVED it!!!

some little parts of heartstopper s2 that i love
the soundtrack - but like specifically the exact moment songs start in important moments - fall in love with a girl when tao and elle kiss in the louvre and seven when tara and darcy talk in ep8. the timing is perfect
mr farrouk looking directly at the queer friendship group when he tells them not to get lost. accurate.
speaking of accuracy - the complete state of dissarray the boys' hotel room is in the entire time. beds are never made, clothes on the floor. its not addressed but its so hilariously accurate for a bunch of teens without parental supervision
issac's entire storyline
(i know this is also in the comic) there isn't drama for the sake of drama, which is super refreshing - especially with queer characters
everyone's acting but especially Kit freaking Connor's.
whoever in costuming said 'yea we'll have then in the coolest knitted cardigan/jumpers/vests but with a plain t-shirt underneath.' i felt seen lol.
the way nick and charlie talk about what they want/don't feel comfortable with.
the where's wally book
the princess diaries reference when tao and elle kiss in the louvre
it really feels like every single plotline with the main cast aren't ones i've seen before/ aren't falling into tropes and overused plots for queer characters
nick asserting that he is, in fact, bi.
the scene after the formal/prom at nick's house with the paris squad
also speaking of the paris squad - the queer students gravitiating towards each other.
the different levels of coming out and being out, which is a nuance i've pretty much never seen in tv before heartstopper. there isnt just in the closet and out to the whole school. there's questioning and not out, questioning and out (nick last season ig), knowing you are queer and not out at all or out to your partner, out to your friends, never planning on coming out to your parents, out to one parent, coming out to different friends at different times.

the last twenty minutes of s2 ep8 of heartstopper is just perfection. it's gorgeous, it's beautifully acted, it's heartwrenching and joyful and difficult and easy, it's about found family, the musical choices are perfect, it feels settled in a way the end of season one didn't (by design). in conclusion i loved it

Okay you know that one heartbreaking scene in heartstopper ep8 where Nick steps towards charlie looking 🥺 with his face all bruised and asks Charlie if he wants to eat lunch together and Charlie says he can’t but he sounds like he is gonna cry 🥹? Imagine 6 episodes of that level of sandess, pining, trying to do the right thing/move on while being heartbroken. That is how young royals s2 felt to me 💔
