You knew that envy was a negative trait. It’s one of the seven deadly sins, after all. But you couldn’t help but feel the cloudy pit in your chest as you observed your female classmates in front of you.
You considered them lucky. They adorned themselves with the most darling accessories, free of judgment. They were only limited to how much the school’s dress code would allow. Their uniforms remained plain, but the little extra pieces added to other parts of themselves gave their own unique little sparkle.
You especially liked this one girl’s bow. Her hair was tied up in a ponytail, decorated with a large, sparkly, pastel ribbon. You watched the dangly bits move with every little shift of her head, the sparkles catching the light beautifully. You were like a cat staring at a piece of moving string; completely hypnotized.
“Hey, (name)!” The voice of your male friend startled you out of your trance. “Whatchu staring at that girl for? You into her or something?” He teased, elbowing her arm a bit too hard for your liking.
“No! I was just…” You paused, contemplating if you wanted to tell the truth or not. You chose to be honest. “…looking at her hair.”
Your friend shifted his attention towards her. He gave a look of realization and understanding, followed by a laugh. “Yeah, I can see why. That bow’s ridiculous! It’s way too much, even for a girl.”
Your heart sank. Well, now you knew his opinion on things like that. And you now knew that he would not be very understanding if you told him that you were looking at it not because you thought it was ridiculous, but because you thought it was cute. You could picture his reaction if you ever told him that you wanted to wear something like that yourself.
“Yeah.” You sighed out the fib. You supposed that even in this day and age, boys liking feminine things still just wasn’t widely accepted enough. Especially not enough for you to live out your fantasies of bows, frills and sparkles.
~~~~
Opening the sliding door with your foot, you walked into the student council room, holding a massive stack of papers. Itsuki, the student council president and your friend, had asked you to retrieve them for her. So of course, you did.
You let go of the heavy papers; slamming them on a nearby desk. “Whew! Here you go, Itsuki.” You huffed.
“Thank you so much, (name)!” She smiled, and started looking through them. Without the large stack obstructing your view, you finally took notice of her appearance.
For most of her middle school life, Itsuki presented as very masculine. But for whatever reason, for the last few months, she had begun to embrace her femininity. Her previously neck-length hair had grown a few inches; reaching her shoulders. She had also started to wear a few girly accessories. Today, her hair was in a half-up-half-down ponytail style. The ponytail was held in place by a cute yellow ribbon.
You wondered why someone who was always so masculine had suddenly changed to be more girly. You also wanted to know how she did it. Itsuki was known for being princely, so surly it was a bit stressful to make that change.
Gathering your courage, you began working towards that question. “Can I ask you something?”
She stopped viewing the papers, and put her full attention on you. “Of course. What is it?”
You took a deep breath. “How come you’re more… girly… now? You used to look very boyish. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing! I’m just wondering!”
Itsuki smiled gently, and huffed out a laugh. “Well… it’s a bit complicated.”
Pulling out a chair, you sat down; an indicator that you were prepared to listen.
With that, she continued. “You know about my brother?” She asked. You confirmed you did with a hum. “Well, once he became sick and weak, I decided to fill in for him. I became what everyone expected him to be. To fit into that role even more, I made myself look like a boy. I always liked cute and girly things, but I felt like I had to leave all that stuff behind.” She frowned with that sentence.
You continued to listen. You had no idea her lore was that sad and complicated. But you nodded, a sign that told her to keep going.
“It wasn’t until after meeting some special friends, that I realized that I didn’t need to pretend to be something I’m not. So, I let myself like cute things again. And that’s where I am now.” She finished her story with a small smile.
“Wow. I didn’t know that.” You said. A small moment of silence went by. It was almost as if it was pressuring you to say something else. So you did. “So… you’re saying that you should just like whatever you want, no matter what anyone else thinks?”
Itsuki nodded. And after seeing your nervous expression, she walked closer to you. “Is something wrong, (name)?”
You finally broke. “I like cute and girly things too! But I don’t let myself enjoy them because I’m scared people will make fun of me!” The word-vomit just spilled out of you.
Itsuki went silent. It was clear she was shocked, but after moment, she smiled once again. “If I’ve learned anything, it’s perfectly fine for boys to like cute and girly things. It doesn’t make them any less cool, and it certainly doesn’t magically turn them into a girl.” She placed a comforting hand on your shoulder.
Not knowing what to say, you just stared at her. She saw that as her cue to say something else. “Hey, Tsubomi, Erika, Yuri and I are going to go to the mall to buy clothes. Wanna come? I know a shop that sells really cute things!”
It took a second for you to decide, but you eventually gave your answer. “Yeah!”
~~~~
(The Next Day)
“Are you sure you’re ready? You don’t need to force yourself.” Itsuki clarified.
“Yeah. If you can do it, so can I!” You said confidently.
You decided to show up to school wearing some of the cute accessories you bought yesterday. Itsuki had given you the courage to do so. If others judged you, so what? She and the other girls still accepted you for who you are. Itsuki had even come over to your house early. Both for emotional support, and to see if your outfit looked good.
Stepping out of your closet, you finally revealed your look. Your previously basic tie had been restyled into a cute bow. To match, you wore a headband with a bow on it. On your wrists were a few cute beaded bracelets, and finally, a sparkly necklace hung around your neck. You had also decorated your school bag; hanging a few cute plush keychains on it.
“So cute!” Itsuki exclaimed. She circled around you to see your look from all angles.
“Thanks! I’m actually really proud that I put this together. I think it looks really good!” You said.
“And it does!”
“Not bad for a boy, huh?” You teased.
“Oh please.” She chuckled. “Gender has nothing to do with it.” With that, she grabbed your bag from your bed, and handed it to you. “This looks so much cuter too!”
“I know! I couldn’t decide which keychain to choose, so I just went with all of them.” You laughed, causing Itsuki to do the same.
~~~~
When reaching the school gates, your hands began to tremble. You hadn’t realized just how scared you were. What would your male friends think? What would the girls think? Would they think you’re creepy? What if you unknowingly violated the dress code, and get sent home?
A hand to your back stopped those thoughts. Seeing it was from Itsuki brought a sense of comfort, and it gave you the courage to continue walking.
You got some stares. Some laughs. Some points. But you expected it. But you admit, it really boosted your confidence when you heard a girl say “So cute!” to her friends, while gesturing to you.
Cue your male friend waving you over, then pausing when he processed what you looked like. Your shoulders tensed, but you pushed on.
“Hey, (friend’s name)!” You waved back, way too casually.
“(name)…” He looked you up and down, even eyeing your keychains. “What are you wearing?”
You thought for a second, before giving your response. “What I want.” And with a smile, you continued walking.
“Oh… okay then.” Your friend tailed behind you. He was clearly still aghast, but he seemed to not care enough to question further. For now, anyway.
You looked to Itsuki, giving her the biggest victory grin. She smiled back, giving a thumbs up for encouragement.
And with that, the start of your new, true self had officially begun.
Hiya saw your requests open (I love your writing)
How about Yuri & little brother precure reader (the same age as Itsuki)
How about with Itsuki’s fairy (forget its name but I do know it’s backstory) their was another one born with it that choose the reader (got quickly introduced with reader being close to Itsuki and finding out) making them cure breeze and their super close to their fairy how would Yuri react learning their little sibling became A precure and start growing A bond like the one she had with cologne (and maybe for some more sad points the new fairy tries to get close to Yuri too)
(Headcanons will be good)
A/N ~ Sure! I had a little difficulty getting this own started, but once I did, I was really in the zone. I really liked this concept! Maybe I’ll turn this into an actual oneshot one day. Also, I didn’t end up using Reader’s Pretty Cure name, but feel free to imagine it! Hope you enjoy!
At the beginning of these headcanons, Yuri isn’t a Cure yet.
~~~🌖~~~🌖~~~🌖~~~
~ When Yuri first saw you fighting as a Pretty Cure, she was both shocked and devastated. You’re her little brother, and she loves you. So the last thing she wanted was for you to go through the same pain she did. Her last battle would replay over and over in her mind, including the sorrowful death of her beloved fairy, Cologne.
Yuri: “A new Pretty Cure?”
(cure name): “Marine, look out!”
Yuri: “Wait a minute… (name)?”
Cure Marine: “Thanks! You saved my butt!”
Yuri: “Oh no…”
~ After the battle she waited until the others were gone to confront you. She hugged you, which was something she never did. She was always so distant after the disappearance of your father. She expressed concern, and begged you not to be a Pretty Cure. But of course, you couldn’t be swayed.
~ Yuri would be upset, continuing to try and push you to quit. But then, she met your fairy. That was the last straw for her. She would begin crying, telling you all her pains from being a Pretty Cure. You assured her that you were willing to bear the consequences, all for the sake of protecting the Heart Tree. That’s when Yuri truly realized that if anyone should be a Pretty Cure, it should be you.
(fairy’s name): “Cure Moonlight! It’s so awesome to meet you! I’ve heard so much about you!”
Yuri: “Who’s this?”
(name): “This is (fairy’s name), my fairy. They and Itsuki’s fairy, Potpourri, are twins!”
Yuri: “……”
(name): “Yuri?”
Yuri: “I’m sorry, (name). I just can’t look at them.”
~ Afterwards, she began coaching you. She bought walkie talkies, or some sort of communication devise to talk to you from a distance. Her critique is harsh, but very honest and helpful. She’d always congratulate you on any improvement or good attack. She may be stern, but she’s still kind.
Yuri: “(cure name)! Behind you!”
(cure name): “Ah! Thanks! That almost hit me!”
Yuri: “You need to be more observant.”
(cure name): “Yeah, yeah. I know.”
~ It would be moments with you and your fairy that would cause her to back away a bit. Her mental scar from loosing Cologne still hadn’t healed, so it caused her pain to see him and herself in the two of you. It would hurt even more when your fairy tried to interact with her. She knew they just wanted to be friends, but she just couldn’t bring herself to talk to them.
~ When her ability to turn into Cure Moonlight is regained, that’s when you really started seeing a change in her. She was happier, and wouldn’t distance herself as much anymore. It was fun when the two of you would fight Desertarians together. Especially since, being siblings, you were naturally in sync. Even though you and all the other Cures were a team, everyone could tell that you and her formed a duo on your own.
Cure Marine: “Look at them go!”
Cure Blossom: “Yeah. It’s like they can read each other’s minds!”
Cure Sunshine: “Should we help them out?”
Cure Marine: “I think they’re doing just fine.”
~ When Yuri finally allowed herself to interact with your fairy, it was shocking how quick their friendship formed. She adores them, and they feel the same. Since she doesn’t have a fairy of her own anymore, the two of you practically share them. But you don’t mind. Thanks to you, your fairy and the rest of your team, all the broken pieces of Yuri’s heart had been put back together, and she was healed.
