Argentina cruise, Brazil scrape through in 2026 World Cup qualifiers

Argentina was held to a 1-1 draw by Venezuela on Lionel Messi's return, while Brazil revitalized their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a last-minute 2-1 victory over Chile on Thursday.

Messi, who missed Argentina's previous matches in September due to injury, appeared to lead the world champions to victory when his free-kick set up Nicolas Otamendi's opener in the 13th minute in Maturin, Venezuela.

However, Venezuela, buoyed by their home crowd, equalized in the second half when veteran striker Salomon Rondon headed in a cross from Yeferson Soteldo, beating Argentina goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

Despite dropping points, the 2022 World Cup winners remain on track for qualification for the 2026 finals, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With the tournament expanding to 48 teams, the top six finishers in South America's 10-team qualifying round will secure a spot at the finals. Argentina leads the standings with 19 points from nine matches, three points ahead of second-placed Colombia, who suffered a surprising 1-0 loss to Bolivia on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Brazil faced a tougher path in their qualifying campaign. Chile, sitting just above the bottom of the standings, stunned Brazil with an early goal from veteran striker Eduardo Vargas, who scored with a looping header just two minutes into the match.

Brazil equalized in first-half stoppage time when Savinho crossed for Igor Jesus, who headed home. As the match seemed destined for a draw, substitute Luiz Henrique scored a low shot from the edge of the area in the 89th minute, securing a 2-1 victory for Brazil. This win moves Brazil up to fourth place in the standings, with 13 points from nine games, still six points behind leaders Argentina.
