Conversation
BVB Feiertagsmagazin w/ Erik Durm - English translation
Nobby: Here he is! I'm very happy you've found your way to me once again, Erik. So far you haven't won a "Goal or No Goal" game against me, that's why I'm especially happy you're here today and I hope it stays that way. Are you confident?
Erik: Yeah, it didn't work out the last two times but I think it's finally time that I kick your ass.
Nobby: I'm excited! (laughs) Have you analysed the match against Benfica, yet?
Erik: Yeah, we talked about it in the hotel. Obviously, we were all sad about the result. I think our approach and way of playing was very good. I think Benfica only had one shot on goal, that one header, and otherwise we didn't give them any chances. Still sucks to lose 1:0 but we're confident that we'll be able to turn things around at home in front of our fans and proceed to the quarter finals.
Nobby: Have you ever experienced such a match? Being so dominant?
Erik: I don't think so, I mean I've only been here for 3 1/2 - 4 years and I haven't experienced something like it in that way. We were clearly the dominant team, we created many chances, even top-class ones, but yeah, sometimes the ball just doesn't want to get in. Sometimes there are matches like that. Nevertheless we have created a lot of chances, which was very important for us, for the team, and like I said we'll turn things around at home.
Nobby: You played badly in Darmstadt and lost, you played excellently in Lisbon and lost. Which face will we see on Saturday?
Erik: Well, I hope the one we showed in Lisbon only this time we of course want to get 3 points, we want to win. It's important for us to continue our home run and yeah, we feel good. Of course Darmstadt was a slip-up. Unfortunately, sometimes there are such games where nothing works out and the opponents surpass themselves and that was the case in Darmstadt. But it's still our own fault as well. But I think in Lisbon we showed a reaction and I think we'll be at the top of our game against Wolfsburg. We had 4 days to take a break and...
Nobby: And the spirit/mood/morale is good?
Erik: Well, yeah after Darmstadt we all were dejected, Lisbon as well, but looking at how we played I think we can look forward to Saturday with confidence.
Nobby: That's what you have to keep in mind and if you play like that on Saturday we won't lose.
Erik: Definitely!
Nobby: You're up against Wolfsburg. You usually say you don't look at how the opponent is doing. But we should and have to do that: they have won 2 of their last 4 games and lost the other 2. How do you rate/judge the team at the moment?
Erik: It's difficult to say something about Wolfsburg. They definitely have improved during the second half of the season, they have played good games, sometimes it's a bit of a surprise/lucky bag but to be honest, I haven't watched a lot of Wolfsburg matches. I'd rather focus on our team so I think if we follow through like we want to and if we play like on Tuesday against Lisbon we will win and we don't have to talk a lot about the others, just about us and then things will work out.
Nobby: Erik, you're free of injuries, you're a regular in the starting XI. Apart from the two losses how much do you enjoy your current situation?
Erik: Of course I enjoy it a lot. It's important for every player to be free of injuries and get playing time. I get that at the moment so I'm very happy but as I said my health is currently still my main focus.
Nobby: (touches Erik's knee) Is everything alright?
Erik: Yes, everything's ok. (both laugh) And yeah our manager is satisfied with our current performance as well and of course I'm always very self-critical. Especially after Darmstadt I was very self-critical and wasn't satisfied with myself but nevertheless I'm fit, I'm healthy and I'm happy about every minute I get.
Nobby: Currently, you're playing in midfield as a winger. You played the same position in the U23. Do you feel comfortable there?
Erik: Well, the midfield postion is mainly an offensive part, I'm still also playing in the back five in the defense. We always shift around a bit which works pretty well. Obviously, Schmelle and I always have to run a lot but I think we both know how to do that. That's why this position fits us well and yeah, being involved at the front is always fun...
Nobby: You were a striker originally, weren't you?
Erik: I was originally playing as a 9 so not that much on the wings but-
Nobby: You know how to score goals
Erik: One can hardly imagine, yeah. (both laugh) I had some inhibitions when I played for the Dortmund amateurs, didn't quite work out with scoring but after that I've become a defender pretty quickly, thanks to Kloppo, but it's still a lot of fun to be able to make a difference in the offense.
Nobby: The Süd will be empty. That will be a weird picture for all of us, for you as well?
Erik: Yes definitely! I mean, the atmosphere here in our stadium is always awesome. The süd being behind us is quite impressive. Especially when we play at home they encourage us and spur us on immensely. Yeah... it's such a shame that the Süd won't be there on Saturday.
Nobby: When you score a goal you'll still celebrate toward the Süd...
Erik: Yes! (both laugh) Yeah, if I score a goal, which for me doesn't happen that often, I'll still celebrate of course.

Valiant Effort Falls Short
Borussia Dortmund dropped out of the UEFA Champions League in the quarter-finals on Wednesday evening, losing 3-1 at AS Monaco after a 3-2 defeat in the first leg at home that was overshadowed by and rescheduled because of a terrorist attack on the players inside the team bus on Tuesday, April 11.
Dortmund would’ve needed to win with a two-goal advantage in minute Stade Louis II to make it to the semi-finals, a feat that seemed difficult but not impossible going by the first leg, when the Black and Yellows suffered from bad refereeing decisions for two of Monaco’s goals.
Head coach Thomas Tuchel chose his tried and tested formation with a back three and two wing-backs, Raphael Guerreiro and Erik Durm, who were supposed to provide width and additional cover against Monaco’s lightning-quick transition game.
Durm, however, early on showed some rust after missing a number of games with muscle problems. He and right-sided centre-back Lukasz Piszczek were basically run over by Monaco’s left-wing duo of Benjamin Mendy and Thomas Lemar. The former initiated an early goal for his side with a spirited run deep into Dortmund territory, forcing an awkward save from Roman Bürki.
The Swiss spilled the ball towards the centre of his box, from where teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe had no problems putting away his fifth Champions League goal of the campaign. Bürki would later redeem himself with a number of quality saves but will feel he should’ve done better in this situation after just two minutes.
After a short while of processing the goal, Dortmund came close to an equaliser that could’ve changed the complexion of the entire tie. Nuri Sahin, who started next to Julian Weigl in central midfield, clanged a brilliant free-kick off the inside of the post and, in an illustration of the misfortunes throughout the 180 minutes for Dortmund, the ball ran alongside the goal line instead of going behind it.
In the 17th minute, just three after Sahin’s attempt, Dortmund failed to engage Lemar, leaving the young Frenchman with far too much time for a pin-point cross towards Radamel Falcao. The veteran striker evaded Matthias Ginter’s marking with some excellent movement in the box and put the ball away with a precise header.
Tuchel reacted 10 minutes later, bringing on Ousmane Dembele for Durm and moving to a back four. Dembele rejuvenated his side’s play to an extent but nothing notable came off their attempts until half-time.
Marcel Schmelzer replaced Sahin at intermission, despite the midfielder’s being perhaps the best BVB player on the pitch to that point. With Sahin’s extensive injury history in recent times in mind, however, Tuchel probably deemed keeping him on too risky. Schmelzer’s presence moved Guerreiro in a central-midfield role.
Dortmund’s hope of mounting an improbable comeback flared up for a short while when Dembele got past Mendy with a nice move just two minutes into the second period, with the 19-year-old finding Marco Reus at a tight angle to the goal. Dortmund’s captain contorted his body magnificently and scored a superb volley goal.
Monaco took the hit on the chin and allowed Dortmund possession without ever being in real danger of a second goal coming, themselves waiting for a counter-attacking opportunity that was sure to arise as the game went on.
One of those was the dagger for the game and the tie, with Piszczek doubling up on costly individual mistakes in the build-up phase after the first leg, as he played the ball into Lemar’s feet with nine minutes of regulation to go. Lemar, arguably the best player during the 90 minutes, found substitute Valere Germain, who made no mistake and even nutmegged Bürki.
BORIS HORVAT AFP/Getty Images
Ultimately, Monaco deserved going through to the semis for their clinical finishing over both legs. Whenever they turned on the tempo, BVB found it almost impossible to prevent shots from good locations. Dortmund also made too many individual mistakes to expect more.
However, one would be remiss to fail to mention the incredibly difficult circumstances under which these two games were played from a BVB perspective. Having to play one day after an attempt at their lives was, as this writer and others argued, inhuman and disgraceful.
Dortmund were then held for 15 minutes on the bus by French police on Wednesday evening, which surely didn’t help concentrating on football.
During the 90 minutes on Wednesday, German TV station ZDF reported that a reconstruction of the progression of events of the attack on Tuesday, April 11, has confirmed that there would’ve been multiple casualties had the three explosive devices been triggered just one second earlier, as they would’ve hit the bus in full force.
With those somber news in mind, every Dortmund fan should be glad the team used up their luck on the bus and had none left for two ultimately meaningless games of football.
Dortmund’s Champions League campaign ends under these unbearable circumstances, but, all in all, it has to be considered a fairly successful one. Given the relative inexperience of many players (and the head coach) at this level, making the quarter-finals is a decent result. Having won their group ahead of holders Real Madrid, while setting a record for goals scored, is a strong accomplishment, too.
Ultimately, the only important thing is that all of the players and staff members are still alive.

Huddersfield 0-2 Bournemouth: Ryan Fraser and Callum Wilson combine to down toothless Town
How Bournemouth missed Callum Wilson.
His goals, especially, but his presence also tends to have an acidifying effect on the team. So welcome Mr. Wilson, and for England also head coach Gareth Southgate.
The striker marked his return from a six-week injury-resignation by Bournemouth in a first half to take the lead from Ryan Fraser cross.
In the second half they exchanged roles, with Wilson sending the ball to his teammate for an easy finish.
English international Wilson scored his 50th goal for Bournemouth after excellent work by Ryan Fraser during the break

There must be something in the Yorkshire air because Wilson was seriously missed. He also has a happy skill to score against Huddersfield, while he scored seven in the last six league games against the Yorkshiremen.
Huddersfield looks like a team that has accepted their fate despite the fans and their clappers and despite their new manager. After all, Bournemouth are not world-class knockers.
To put this competition in context, only Fulham lost more on their travels than Bournemouth this season and Eddie Howe's men were on a series of nine defeats in the first division ahead of this game.
Since banking six points against West Ham and Chelsea, Bournemouth had not won in five, not to score in three of those and admitted 12 goals.
In other words, there were reasons for Huddersfield to feel a little optimism.
Wilson, who, otherwise, was at the center of the first significant attack from Bournemouth, picking up Fraser's pass and only shooting to see Jonas Lossl blocking his legs.
The last three matches between these two sides in the John Smith Stadium had produced a total of 15 league games, but there was little to indicate that there was a repeat on the cards.
Bournemouth looked good to play a guard game and to rely on the counterattack.
[Huismanager] Jan Siewert, put Chris Lowe in peace and he came close to making immediate impact with a run from the left followed by a cross that just sailed over the head of Elias Kachunga.
Huddersfield also had a penalty shout, Alex Pritchard convinced he had been soiled by Nathan Ake but referee Anthony Taylor had none of it.
Tempers began to frail and moods were not improved when Bournemouth defended Adam Smith fell from the field injured and moved on to the field for the dug-out to get treatment.
The Cherries could have extended their lead by the end when Jorgensen was called to clear the header of Nathan Ake, again set up by livewire Fraser.
On a miserable afternoon for Huddersfield, one ray of light. Substitute Aaron Rowe made his Premier League debut at the age of 18.

West Ham point denies Huddersfield back-to-back wins
West Ham’s Felipe Anderson scored a late equaliser at John Smith’s Stadium to prevent Huddersfield claiming their second win in six days.
Still buoyant from Monday’s victory over Fulham,[1] the Terriers started brightly and Alex Pritchard opened the scoring with just their second goal at home this season – and the first scored by a Huddersfield player.
The hosts then lost Chris Lowe to injury as the German midfielder was carried off with a suspected dislocated shoulder and West Ham had the better of the second half.
Anderson drew the Hammers level but they were unable to follow up last week’s win over Burnley[2] with another victory and secure back-to-back league wins for the first time since January 2017.
A point was enough for Huddersfield to move Cardiff back to third-bottom in the Premier League, while West Ham remain 13th.
More to follow.

Football: Salah back on the goal trail as Liverpool beat Huddersfield
HUDDERSFIELD: Mohamed Salah ended a four-match goal drought for Liverpool with a sublime strike that secured a nervous 1-0 Premier League victory away to Huddersfield on Saturday (Oct 20).
Salah has struggled for consistency this season, and was a doubt for the trip to West Yorkshire after suffering a hamstring problem while on international duty with Egypt during the week.
But in the 24th minute he steered in Xherdan Shaqiri’s pass to score his 50th goal in English club football, ensuring Liverpool ended Saturday level on points with league leaders Manchester City.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could be pleased his players showed the strength of character required to see out victory over a team coached by his long-time friend David Wagner, but there were only fleeting glimpses of the free-flowing attack that lit up the Premier League last season.
Then again, this was something of a mix-and-match Liverpool line-up.
Perhaps with Wednesday’s Champions League home match against Red Star Belgrade in mind, Klopp freshened up his front line, restricting Roberto Firmino to a late substitute appearance.
Sadio Mane was not risked after having surgery on a broken thumb during the week, so Daniel Sturridge made his first league start for Liverpool since last November, and midfielder Adam Lallana his first since New Year’s Day.
GENUINE CLASS
Klopp had warned this match, against opponents without a home goal since April, could be a trap, and he was right to be wary. Wagner knew just how to make life difficult for the title hopefuls, setting Huddersfield up with a back three and leaving them tight on the visitors’ front trio.
It was to Liverpool’s credit that they fashioned a goal of genuine class to break down stubborn opponents midway through the first half.
Shaqiri collected Joe Gomez’s ball from the right-back position, and played an excellent pass for Salah, who timed his run perfectly and found just the right angle to slide a shot past Jonas Lossl and into the far corner.
For Salah, it was a moment of relief in what has been a testing season.
But Huddersfield, in the relegation zone and without a league win so far this season, responded well and were unlucky not to have equalised by half-time.
Jonathan Hogg struck the post with a fine 25-yard drive as Liverpool failed to clear Erik Durm’s cross, while James Milner escaped a loud penalty appeal when he diverted the ball with his thigh onto his arm.
Right at the end of the first half, Alex Pritchard thought he had ended the Terriers long wait for a home goal, but was rightly ruled offside as he slotted past Alisson following a Hogg header.
Huddersfield continued to threaten after half-time, with Laurent Depoitre – seeking to end a run of one goal in 27 matches – guiding a header from Florent Hadergjonaj’s cross, which Alisson held comfortably.
Salah remained a threat when Liverpool got the ball to him, and almost added a second goal when he collected Sturridge’s diagonal ball on his chest and steered a shot just beyond the far post.
Lallana, still getting back to the pace of Premier League football after a series of injuries, came off with just over 20 minutes left to be replaced by Fabinho, making his Premier League debut after a £39 million (US$51 million) move from Monaco.
The visitors still had to survive a scare after that, with Steve Mounie diverting fellow substitute Isaac Mbenza’s cross over the bar on the turn as Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren both failed to clear, but Liverpool got the job done.

Arsenal and Bayern Munich charged by Uefa for fan behaviour
Stewards had to clear the pitch of paper and streamers thrown by Bayern Munich fans inside the first minute of Tuesday’s tie
Arsenal and Bayern Munich have been charged by Uefa following the behaviour of their fans in Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 tie at the Emirates.
Bayern have been charged with the throwing of objects after their supporters delayed play by launching rolls of paper onto the pitch.
The visiting fans were protesting over ticket prices.
Arsenal also face charges after a supporter invaded the field during their crushing 5-1 second-leg defeat.
Bayern Munich fans held up a banner which read “without fans football is not worth a penny”, having made a similar protest in a Champions League group match at Arsenal last season.
Disciplinary proceedings have also been opened against Napoli following their 6-2 aggregate loss to Real Madrid at the Stadio San Paolo on Tuesday.
The Italian club have four charges against them; the use of a laser pointer, blocking stairways, throwing of objects and setting off fireworks.
All cases will be dealt with by Uefa on 23 March.
Aubameyang hat-trick sends Dortmund through
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s hat-trick saw Dortmund easily overturn a first-leg deficit against Benfica in the Champions League last 16
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a hat-trick as Borussia Dortmund thrashed Benfica to ease into the Champions League quarter-finals.
The hosts trailed 1-0 on aggregate from the first leg but Aubameyang levelled the last-16 tie after just four minutes with a header at the back post.
Winger Franco Cervi twice came close to scoring a vital away goal for Benfica before the interval.
But Dortmund took control after Christian Pulisic scored on 59 minutes.
The 18-year-old winger brilliantly chipped onrushing goalkeeper Ederson after being slid in by Lukasz Piszczek.
Aubameyang, who missed a penalty in the first leg in Lisbon, then swept in Marcel Schmelzer’s low cross two minutes later before an unmarked Marc Bartra hit the post from a corner.
The Gabon striker completed his treble with five minutes remaining as he turned in Erik Durm’s sublime pass.
Dortmund have now lost only one of their last 12 European home matches under coach Thomas Tuchel as they reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2014.
‘We didn’t want the first leg to annoy us’
Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel: “That was the perfect time for ‘Auba’ to get his hat-trick.
“It was a sensational performance. I love goals like his first one because they need such good timing and Auba is always there with his nose for goal.
“We had a great start, then we lost our way after 25 minutes, but the second half was a top performance.
“We didn’t want to let the first-leg defeat annoy us, now we are in the last eight and we want to go further.”

3 things we learned from Borussia Dortmund’s 4-0 win over Benfica
Dortmund overturned their first leg deficit to reach the Champions League quarterfinals.
Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday, overturning a 1-0 first leg defeat with a 4-0 win at home to Benfica. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completed a hat-trick after a Christian Pulisic strike broke the visitors’ stubborn resistance early in the second half, with the final score eventually flattering the victors.
Benfica supporters were left fearing the worst when their first leg lead was nullified within five minutes of kickoff. An Ousmane Dembélé corner was flicked on at the near post by Pulisic and flicked in at the far post by an unmarked Aubameyang. It was a goal of embarrassing simplicity, and it doubtless gave Dortmund the early momentum.
But despite seeing plenty of possession in the following few minutes, the hosts struggled to create anything with it. The longer the half wore on, the more Benfica grew in confidence, their superb organisation giving rise to slightly more attacking swagger. Their first great chance came midway through the opening period, though Nélson Semedo’s low cross was met by a tame effort by Franco Cervi, and Roman Bürki got down to save.
The Swiss goalkeeper was called into action again just past the half-hour, when a deep Pizzi free-kick was met with a powerful Luisão header. Unfortunately for the veteran Brazilian, his effort was straight at Bürki, who made a comfortable catch. It proved the last real chance of a tight first half, with Benfica having recovered from their early setback in admirable fashion.
Within a couple of minutes of the restart, Benfica gave Dortmund another huge scare. A low cross from the right was swiped at by Łukasz Piszczek, with the loose ball popping out for Cervi on the edge of the area. The Argentine attacker should’ve buried the ball in the back of the net, though a crucial hesitation allowed Piszczek to atone for his error and make a crucial block.
Cervi was made to rue his error just short of the hour, when Dortmund sucker-punched Benfica on the counter. Ederson made a smart save to deny Aubameyang, though was powerless to stop a smart Pulisic chip seconds later. Dortmund had ridden their luck, but had the aggregate advantage once more.
It took them just a couple of minutes to add a third, with Benfica's defence — so well organised in the first half — punished for switching off once more. A first-time cross from Marcel Schmelzer on the left was gleefully gobbled up by Aubameyang, who was left with the simple task of tapping beyond Ederson from point-blank range.
Benfica’s swift capitulation all but killed the tie, with the Portuguese champions unable to muster a response. All that was left was for Aubameyang to complete his hat-trick, which he did so with five minutes of normal time remaining. It was another tap-in for the Gabonese international, who converted Erik Durm’s low cross to cap the victory.
Borussia Dortmund: Roman Bürki; Marc Bartra, Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Matthias Ginter 88’), Łukasz Piszczek; Marcel Schmelzer, Julian Weigl, Gonzalo Castro, Erik Durm; Christian Pulisic, Ousmane Dembélé (Shinji Kagawa 80’); Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (André Schürrle 86’).
Goals: Aubameyang (4’, 61’, 85’), Pulisic (59’).
Benfica: Ederson; Eliseu, Victor Lindelöf, Luisão, Nélson Semedo; André Almeida, Pizzi, Andreas Samaris (Andrija Živković 74’), Eduardo Salvio (Jonas 64’); Franco Cervi (Raúl Jiménez 82’), Kostas Mitroglou.
Goals: None.
3 Things
1. Take a bow, Christian Pulisic
Though it wasn't Christian Pulisic's liveliest match in a Dortmund shirt, the American international nevertheless delivered when it mattered. Drafted into the Dortmund starting lineup in place of the injured Marco Reus, the 18-year-old arguably netted the decisive goal of the biggest game of his side’s season so far — and he certainly took it well. It’s not often coaches are comfortable relying on teenagers in the latter stages of the Champions League, though Thomas Tuchel will know better than anyone that Pulisic is no ordinary teenager. He’s not just a star in the making, but a star full stop.
2. Momentary errors cost organised Benfica
This Benfica side were arguably the weakest to make it through into the Champions League knockout stages, with their run testament to the organisational abilities of coach Rui Vitória. Indeed, their first half performance here was one that Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid would’ve been proud of, with their two strikers tirelessly working back behind the ball, and their midfield four sitting narrow to deny space for the likes of Julian Weigl and Gonzalo Castro to form triangles with Dortmund’s attacking trident. They’ll be kicking themselves for their costly lapses in concentration shortly after the halftime whistle, which undermined their impressive earlier efforts.
3. Dortmund’s attack could benefit from greater variation
Though Benfica certainly deserved credit for their first half defensive display, they may well have been helped by Dortmund’s tactics. Tuchel's formation lacked real width up top, with Ousmane Dembélé and Pulisic forming a narrow two behind centre-forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. It meant Benfica’s midfield four could sit narrow and stifle Dortmund by sheer weight of numbers, when a wider attacking shape could've forced the visitors to play a little more expansively. It will certainly give Tuchel food for thought heading into the quarterfinals. At present, it appears that Dortmund are much more effectual on the counter attack, and a more defensive strategy could serve them well against the bigger boys.

Huddersfield Town 0-1 Liverpool: Mohamed Salah's strike earns narrow win
Mohamed Salah ended his worst scoring run in a Liverpool shirt to decide a hard-fought victory at Huddersfield that helped his side keep up with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
Salah’s 50th goal in English football came courtesy of a smart low finish, as he put away Xherdan Shaqiri’s through ball in the 24th minute to dampen a mood matching Huddersfield’s bright start.
The Egypt forward was visibly buoyed, having failed to score in his previous four appearances, but as a team it was Huddersfield who reacted more positively as they twice came close to equalising before half-time.
Captain Jonathan Hogg smashed a long-range drive against the post before Alex Pritchard was marginally offside when lifting a finish past Alisson, while a penalty appeal for handball against James Milner was turned down.
After the break, Laurent Depoitre saw a header well held with his side’s first shot on target, while Salah fired wide when presented with a tough chance to finish at speed on the counter attack.
There was a league debut for the Reds’ £39m former Monaco midfielder Fabinho but even with his introduction Liverpool failed to ever totally assume control of a tie substitute Steve Mounie almost snatched away from them.
With five minutes to play, the Benin striker rashly blazed over from inside the box after a cross spilled through unconvincing blocks from Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren.
Victory sees Jurgen Klopp’s side move level on points with fellow joint leaders Manchester City. They trail Pep Guardiola’s side on goal difference, with the defending champions 10 goals ahead.
Huddersfield, who last season defied the odds to avoid relegation, remain without a victory this term and are now two points from safety and 17th.

Kane double gives Spurs victory at winless Huddersfield
Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham beat Huddersfield to keep the winless Terriers bottom of the Premier League.
The hosts started brightly but went behind when Kane headed in Kieran Trippier’s right-wing cross.
Spurs added a second when Danny Rose went down in the box after slight contact from Florent Hadergjonaj, and Kane sent Jonas Lossl the wrong way with the resulting penalty.
Laurent Depoitre hit the bar, but in truth the hosts were well beaten.

Everton and Huddersfield share points
Everton came from behind against Huddersfield to maintain their unbeaten start to the season in a disappointing game at Goodison Park.
The hosts enjoyed most of the possession, but failed to register a shot on target, before Philip Billing gave the Terriers a surprise lead in the 33rd minute when he headed past Jordan Pickford from a corner.
Huddersfield’s lead lasted just 87 seconds as Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised by the same method, diverting a Lucas Digne cross past the diving Jonas Lossl.
Toffees boss Marcos Silva introduced Ademola Lookman off the bench in the second period, and the 20-year-old created the best chance of the half when he produced a tantalising cross that just eluded Calvert-Lewin and Gylfi Sigurdsson with the goal at their mercy.
The result lifts David Wagner’s side out of the relegation zone into 17th, while Everton climb one place into seventh.
Everton struggle to break down resilient Terriers
Huddersfield came to Goodison Park with a gameplan, and they executed it perfectly.
Wagner’s men sat deep with 10 men behind the ball straight from kick-off, inviting pressure from the hosts as they tried to break them down.
Everton had 59% of the possession in the first half, but they failed to create anything of note, and defenders Seamus Coleman and Kurt Zouma had the best opportunities.
Calvert-Lewin was brought in to replace their suspended top-scorer Richarlison, and although the youngster got off the mark for the season with the equaliser, Everton lacked the trickery and guile to break through their organised opponents.
In fact, the hosts, who lost Theo Walcott to injury in the second half, only managed a single shot on goal in the whole game.
Richarlison will still be missing for the meeting with West Ham but Silva could turn to Lookman, who impressed off the bench.
Huddersfield attack remains a concern
Huddersfield avoided relegation by four points last season – and the objective for the new campaign will be to retain their Premier League status once more.
A battling point at Goodison Park is exactly the type of result the Terriers will need. The visitors were set up to limit their opponents’ success between the lines, and as Wagner acknowledged afterwards: “Our formation worked.”
But while they took the lead from a set piece, they posed very little threat from open play.
Coming into the game, the Terriers had failed to score in 23 of their 41 Premier League games – more than any other team in this period.
Billing’s header was only his side’s second goal of the season, and Wagner admitted not “creating more opportunities” was his one concern about the day.

Berahino ends goal drought as Stoke knock out Huddersfield
Saido Berahino ended his two-and-half-year goal drought as Stoke City knocked Premier League Huddersfield Town out of the Carabao Cup in the second round.
Huddersfield made 10 changes from the side that drew with Cardiff and their winless start to the season continued.
After a goalless first half, Berahino – a £12m signing in 2017 – scrappily got his first Potters goal as he netted after James McClean hit the bar.
And Juninho Bacuna’s bizarre own goal made it 2-0 deep in to stoppage time.

Borussia Dortmund advanced to the final of the DFB-Pokal for a record-setting fourth time in a row on Wednesday evening, beating rivals Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena, 3-2. The Black and Yellows will face Eintracht Frankfurt on May 27 in Berlin’s Olympiastion as they attempt to win the first piece of proper silverware since 2012.
Differing runs of form since the last meeting with Bayern on April 8, a game Dortmund had deservedly lost 4-1, were enough for most to expect a competitive match on Wednesday, even though Bayern remained pretty clear favourites in the eye of the public and on the betting markets.
Dortmund head coach Thomas Tuchel was confident, however, ahead of the game and selected a team that reflected this mindset after going with a rather defensive 5-3-2 set up in that meeting earlier this month.
The 43-year-old opted to go with a back four this time around, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos returning to the starting XI after suffering from muscle problems in his abdomen. In midfield, Julian Weigl and Gonzalo Castro manned the centre, while Raphael Guerreiro and Ousmane Dembele played on the wings. Tuchel clearly identified Bayern’s wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery as the main source of danger for his side and tasked his own widemen to help out their full-backs against the two veterans. Up front, Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang played off each other and served as first pressing lines, even though Dortmund only situationally applied pressure high up the pitch.
Especially after the first 10 minutes or so, they almost exclusively committed more than one man in pressing situations high up the pitch when Bayern’s back-up goalkeeper Sven Ulreich was on the ball, the former Stuttgart No. 1 looking extremely uncomfortable in possession all game long.
Dortmund’s more positive approach almost paid immediate dividends after just four minutes, when Guerreiro played a fast ball across the face of goal towards Aubameyang, but the Gabonese missed his first great chance of the game, thanks in no small part to a sliding Mats Hummels.
Arturo Vidal whizzed a shot just to the far side of the post after 13 minutes and Bayern started to take more and more control, when Javi Martinez played a pass into the feet of Guerreiro, who had anticipated another backwards pass to Ulreich and wanted to put the ‘keeper under immediate pressure.
Guerreiro’s attempt clanged off the post and, luckily for Dortmund, Reus was the first man to react and poke home, while Bayern’s retiring captain Philipp Lahm almost took out his ankle trying to clear the ball off the line.
The hosts took the hit on the chin and kept putting more and more pressure on Dortmund’s back line without creating anything of substance until the 29th minute. Martinez made up for his earlier mistake following a corner. Bayern cleverly boxed out in the area and so the Spaniard didn’t even have to jump to score with a thumping header.
He wasn’t going to be the only centre-back to score, as team-mate and former BVB captain Hummels added a second for Bayern four minutes from intermission. Martinez shifted play to the left side with a long ball, with Lukasz Piszczek isolated against Ribery. That was a bit of a recurring theme, as Dembele struggled with his defensive responsibilities far more than Guerreiro on the left — Robben was basically a non-factor all game long.
Ribery pulled back for Hummels with the outside of his boot and the Germany international coolly slotted home to give his new side a deserved lead at the time. If anything, Dortmund could consider themselves lucky to be down by one goal only, as Martinez had hit the post after another corner and Sven Bender had made a perfect last-ditch tackle on former team-mate Robert Lewandowski to prevent an earlier second goal. Roman Bürki made one of his most important saves against the Pole in stoppage time of the first period, too.
Dortmund clearly needed to settle themselves at half-time and Tuchel switched things up a bit, going for even more of a counter-attacking approach by introducing the athletic Erik Durm on the right wing and moving Dembele in a more central role at the expense of Castro.
The introduction of a more defensive-minded player on the wing in Durm allowed Piszczek to focus even more on Ribery, with the Frenchman much less of a factor in the second half.

Still, the hosts had the upper hand and it felt a third and presumably decisive goal was merely a matter of time.
The two key situations of the game, though, took place after 61 and 63 minutes, respectively. First, the banged up Hummels left the field with Jerome Boateng coming on. The long-time Dortmund man had been the best player on the pitch with a masterful performance that showed his former fans just what they’re missing out on since he left for Munich.
Two minutes later, Bürki invited Bayern to score with a horrid pass to Weigl under immense pressure from Thiago Alcantara. Lewandowski got on the ball and laid off for Robben, who beat Bürki from the middle of the box. Incredibly, “Iron Manni” Bender managed to deflect the shot onto the bar with a heroic effort. It was the kind of goal-line clearance that fans will talk about for years — think Jürgen Kohler against Manchester United or Neven Subotic against Bayern at Wembley.
Bayern’s wasting of prime opportunities was bound to be punished and, sure enough, Dortmund just that in the 69th minute. Dembele and Aubameyang, who both had more than quiet nights until that point, combined for yet another goal to equalise out of the relative blue for BVB. Dembele’s cross was weighted so perfectly that his striker only needed to nod home gently from less than three yards.
Now Dortmund were suddenly on the up and quickly added what would prove the decisive goal just five minutes later. Guerreiro and Reus forced Lahm into a rare mistake around the halfway line and BVB rolled a three-on-three counter towards Bayern’s goal.
Reus did well to hold play up long enough to find Guerreiro, who immediately returned the ball. Reus almost stumbled and lost the ball but had the presence of mind to find Dembele. The 19-year-old, who had done close to nothing for about 65 minutes but was suddenly threatening with every touch of the ball, sent David Alaba the wrong way with a juke move that opened up a shooting lane for his left foot. The ball kissed the crossbar on its way in and Dortmund had an improbable lead again.
Bayern threw everyone and everything forward in the final 15 minutes (plus no fewer than six of added time) but, apart from a Robben shot saved superbly by Bürki, mustered very little that made Dortmund sweat. In a sign that truly everything was possible for BVB, Xabi Alonso was even booked for simulation after three minutes after Dembele had put them in front.
