BETENSURED’S TEAM OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON
The PFA team of the season released a couple of days ago generated a lot of controversy (inevitably) seeing as a number of players had been omitted and some other players added. Obviously, ours will be no different as we cannot guarantee that the team selected- I mean, you can only pick eleven players- will fill all our readers the world over the utmost satisfaction. So, here goes.
ALISSON BECKER (GK-LIVERPOOL)
What a name to have! For a goalkeeper to have kept 20 clean sheets with two games left to play is mightily impressive especially considering that it is your debut season in the Premier League. He obviously had an average start to the season but has grown in leaps and bounds since then.
AARON WAN-BISSAKA (RB- CRYSTAL PALACE)
He has been one of the stand-out players this season and this is all the more obvious because he does not play for a top-six team and hence would have to do more defensive work. He is quick, very good going forward and very dependable at the back as well.
VIRGIL VAN DIJK (CB- LIVERPOOL)
It is difficult to argue about his level of influence on Liverpool as they have kept 20 clean sheets and going on to become one of the meanest defences in the League. He is very solid both on the ground and in the air, which is rare considering his height. He has also added a fair share of goals, some of them very vital to his club’s ambitions.
AYMERIC LAPORTE (CB- MANCHESTER CITY)
Laporte arrived around last January, around the same time that Van Dijk joined Liverpool and has grown to be a very dependable centre back with very good positioning and calmness. He also has great ability in starting attacks from the back with his accurate passing. His team has also conceded the second fewest goals after (guess who) Liverpool.
ANDREW ROBERTSON (LB- LIVERPOOL)
Ever since Robertson got into the Liverpool first team last season, he has not looked back. He is arguably the most dependable footballer in the League as he steadily produces top performances. He is a bundle of energy and always ready to assist in attack- making him the defender with the highest assists this season- and defend as well.
FERNANDINHO (MF- MANCHESTER CITY)
Fernandinho has been the bedrock of the Manchester City midfield for a while now. This season has been no different as he has admirably shielded his team from opposition attacks and his positioning is second to none. He also has a very good range of passing.
BERNARDO SILVA (MF- MANCHESTER CITY)
Bernardo Silva has proven to be very dependable, whether operating out wide or in central positions. His ability to wiggle out of tight spaces is uncanny and his forward thinking has also been key in Manchester City’s performances this season.
CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN (MF- TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR)
The Danish midfielder has been one of the more consistent players for Tottenham and in the Premier League. His ability to pick out a good pass is quite admirable and he has amassed 7 goals and 12 assists – one of the highest- so far this season.
EDEN HAZARD (FW- CHELSEA)
Eden Hazard has been the only reason (more or less) why Chelsea still has anything to look forward to at this late stage of the season. Chelsea’s season may be regarded as easily forgettable. For the Belgian international, this has been arguably his most memorable seasons: constantly scoring, assisting and getting around defenders.
SERGIO AGUERO: (FW- MANCHESTER CITY)
Sergio Aguero has notched so many vital goals – see most recent goal against Burnley- that has kept Manchester City on course to win the treble. He also had consecutive hat-tricks against Arsenal and Chelsea. The 30-year old is one of the most dependable forwards the Premier League has ever seen.
RAHEEM STERLING (FW- MANCHESTER CITY)
This has been the season that Sterling has proven all his doubters wrong as he has raised his game – especially this season- to the point where calling him the best player of the Premier League season would not be met with raised eyebrows.

THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUARTER-FINAL 2 ROUND UP PART - 2
Ajax knock-out another big team in style..
After defeating Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, there was the feeling that Juventus would be tougher to play against. In the Allianz Stadium, one would have expected Juventus to turn up the heat. Just like in the first leg, after Juventus went ahead via (no marks for guessing correctly) Ronaldo, Ajax response was almost immediate. In the second half, it was all Ajax. What was particularly ironic was the fact that Juventus rested practically the whole team over the weekend against SPAL- a game they duly lost- and Ajax still had to field their first team during the weekend because there is really no room for slip-up as PSV Eindhoven is hot on their heels. Yet, it was Juventus that played like they were jaded and did not have the legs to keep up with this youthful side from Amsterdam. The level of dominance was so glaring that the eventual score-line did a bit of a disservice to this Ajax team. Another impressive giant-killing victory for Ajax.
For this Juventus side, this is another opportunity lost. Juventus may win the Serie A with their eyes closed this season but they have not been at their absolute best for the most part. Most of their players are getting to the climax of their careers. Ronaldo’s superpowers may not be there till infinity as he will be 35 next year. The clock is ticking.
Manchester United blown away at the Camp Nou.
For the first ten minutes of this game, it seemed like Manchester United had a game plan. But once Rashford missed his chance and Lionel Messi got the first two goals, the rest of the game was just perfunctory. We all got the feeling that going to the Camp Nou and getting a result there may have been just too much for Manchester United but their performance left a lot to be desired. For Manchester United, all their focus would have to be getting into the top four. But with 5 losses in 7 games, the rot needs to be stopped for any chance of that happening.
For Barcelona, when you have a player that consistently makes the extraordinary look ordinary, you have a lot less to worry about. Liverpool will definitely be a bigger test. We cannot wait.
Liverpool make light work of Porto..
Liverpool did not need to do a lot to get a very good result in Porto. Liverpool was majorly on the back foot but the trio of Salah, Mane and Firmino just proved too hot to handle. Liverpool will feel like they can go one better than last year and win the most prestigious European competition. Next up: Barcelona.
Manchester City edged out in emotional rollercoaster..
In what eventually turned out to be one of the most entertaining Champions League games, Tottenham had the last laugh as there was some serious change of emotions towards the end of the game and no one would have been more relieved than Christian Eriksen. For Manchester City, this was a step too far as they were not in control of the game even after they scored early on and those two goals conceded early on proved to be really costly. The decision to play De Bruyne for only a few minutes towards the end of the first leg has eventually proven to be something that would be thought of with regret. Manchester City once again when it mattered most and you just get the feeling that this one will linger for a while. The quadruple is now a bust.
For Tottenham, playing without their talisman for most of the two legs and losing Moussa Sissoko during this match and still progressing is quite a commendable achievement. For them, the emotional rollercoaster was ultimately worthwhile.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – QUARTER-FINALS ROUND-UP
Manchester City may regret the spot-kick missed by Aguero down the line. Asides that, Manchester City lacked any form of penetration (especially from the middle third) during the game. In hindsight, Kevin De Bruyne should have started due to his eye for a good pass. Riyad Mahrez was not as direct and a Leroy Sane on the left and Sterling on the right would have been better. But that is all ‘ifs and buts’ at the moment. Manchester City will go to the Etihad having to overturn only a one goal deficit. The quadruple is on the line.
For Tottenham Hotspur, this was a good performance especially as Harry Kane came off injured during the second half. Their talisman would most likely miss the second leg of this crunch encounter but credit has to go to this team as they held their own and the quick feet of the likes of Lucas Moura will always give defenders something to worry about. Tottenham Hotspur handled themselves well the last time Harry Kane was out and they would hope for more of the same to ensure that their season ends on a high.
Liverpool make progress..
This game was a lot tougher compared to last season’s episode primarily because FC Porto did not just sit back and soak up countless amount of pressure. At times, they took the game to Liverpool (away from home) and had a number of shots on target, ultimately not finding the net.
Liverpool also scoring early- deflection or otherwise- helped settle things from the offset and this made the Liverpool players less anxious and just playing their game. The second goal, still in the first half, made Liverpool take their foot off the gas a bit in the second half. This tie is not over. Based on the events that have transpired in this UCL season and last, one cannot get too comfortable with a two-goal lead.
Ajax hold their own again..
For the umpteenth time in this UEFA Champions League season, Ajax Amsterdam Football Club has given a good account of themselves against one of the very top teams in Europe. They have played Bayern in the group stages, knocked-out the defending Champions in Real Madrid and also have played a draw against Juventus. Ajax surprisingly seems to have improved especially considering the first leg in the last 16 at home to Real Madrid where a lot of mistakes were made that ultimately cost them that particular game. Obviously, most of us would expect Juventus to finish the job at home. But is that not the same statement that was made when they went to the Bernabeu some weeks ago? Football eh?
For Juventus, on the one hand, this was a good result against one of the surprise teams at this stage of the competition. They could have had another after a Douglas Costa mazy run ended up with the ball hitting the upright. As earlier said, the team would feel that they could finish the tie in Turin.
Barcelona win at Old Trafford..
Obviously not the Lionel Messi master-class we had all expected to see. There was a lot of passing (clearly more by Barcelona) but there were very few chances created. Even the goal scored was deflected in by Luke Shaw. Manchester United played well, especially in the second half of the game but what could be a bit damning about their performance is that Barcelona did not actually need to do a lot to get the results they needed to take back to the Camp Nou. Nonetheless, credit should still go to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his team for putting themselves about. Putting Diogo Dalot on the lefy -where Messi mostly operates from in attack- was a good move as it did not leave the Luke Shaw overly exposed to the Argentine magician. They would have to give this type of performance (and more) if they want to stand any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals when they visit the Nou Camp.

At the heart of the enterprise is an algorithm that considers a huge range of factors. Broadly, there are two layers of data – primary factors include basic statistics like the average number of goals or the team's past performance.
Events like transfers, suspensions and injuries are also factored in. The secondary set considers data that might affect player motivation, like weather or life events.
The system is automated, functioning entirely without human interference or (crucially) human emotions.
It is founded on complex methodological models such as a modified Dixon and Coles model, and even takes the methods of its opponents into consideration.
Unsurprisingly we have attracted a lot of commercial attention.
You are welcome to join our winning team and make good money from your football passion.

Les Blues Still the Team to Beat Part - 2
If you have been following this international break very closely, you would have noticed one thing: Club football is way better to watch than international soccer. I mean, apart from the World Cup, what other international tournament does one look forward to in any given year? I know it is always a privilege for most players to represent their countries – probably the highest honour as a footballer – but can you really look me in the eye and tell me that Harry Kane does not have one eye on the mouth-watering Champions League quarter-final clash against Raheem Sterling, his national team-mate?
I believe I have digressed enough.
After easily defeating, it still looks like it is France that would probably win the next major international tournament which happens to be the 2020 European Championship to be held in (drum roll) 12 different countries to mark the tournament’s 60th anniversary.
Such is the depth of the French National Team that players like Alexander Lacazette, Benjamin Mendy, Adrien Rabiot, Aymeric Laporte, Anthony Martial (and co.) cannot make the team.
Now, this is not a dig at the other teams. The likes of England (who have seemingly continued to improve even after the World Cup), Germany (who seem to be recapturing some of their glory days after their very abysmal showing in their last major tournament), Belgium (whose ‘Golden Generation’ is not so golden anymore and need to win a major tournament to be remembered as one of the best national teams), Italy (who did not feature at the last major tournament and is looking like a very youthful team that can roll with the big boys), Holland (who also did not feature in the last tournament and have recently discovered some good form under new coach Ronald Koeman) and so on would also be in the tournament with good chances of winning it.
Even the European Championship holders, Portugal (just in case we are not on the same page) has not been playing very well partly because a core of their top performers are winding down their careers. To be more specific; Ronaldo, who will be 35 and then some by the time the tournament kicks off next year is their best and most consistent performer. He is also one of the oldest players in the team. Ronaldo is an irreplaceable player and his absence would most likely have a very detrimental effect on any team he represents.
Ultimately, the French National Team is a set of extremely talented and experienced players (and Coach) and has the ability to take on any team in the world right now. Oh, they are also the World Cup holders as well. Would they have the ability to go one better and lift the trophy come 2020? (we are not putting the chicken before the egg because they still need to qualify first) We will soon find out.

What Is Going On At Chelsea Part - 2
Back when Maurizio Sarri was appointed as the new Chelsea Manager, it was greeted with great positivity especially after taking into account the way things reached a bitter end with Antonio Conte. From ostracizing Diego Costa (telling him that he was not needed anymore via a text message) to the alleged intense trainings amongst other issues.
Appointing Maurizio Sarri seemed like a masterstroke. Maurizio Sarri had just come from Napoli, a team that played swashbuckling football while also being very competitive, while also almost winning the Serie A in the 2017/2018 season, eventually finishing the season in second place, four points behind perennial League winners, Juventus. One key thing that Sarri should be given credit for was the way his team managed the departure of Gonzalo Higuain-their Argentine striker that had just finished the season with 36 League goals- by tinkering with the position of Dries Mertens, the little Belgian winger.
Chelsea (and Sarri) got off to a terrific start of the season, losing their first game in November the year before. It seemed like ‘Sarri-ball’ had come to stay for a long time. It also seemed like Chelsea was a genuine contender to compete for the Premier League title alongside Manchester City.
Fast-forward a number of months later and things do not seem as rosy and upbeat anymore.
Jorginho does not look like an astute signing anymore and there are people (fans, supporters, ex-players and pundits alike) that have been clamouring for Ngolo Kante, arguably the best defensive midfielder in Europe, to go back to his original position at the base of midfield.
Things went from bad to worse when Manchester City put six past them in what was Chelsea’s worst performance in the Premier League. Afterwards Sarri could not even provide insight as to what happened. Chelsea has also lost in the Carabao Cup Final- to Manchester City gain, albeit putting in a very good performance compared to the last time the teams met, the FA Cup 5thRound to Manchester United at home and lost to Everton just last weekend. The weekend before that saw them play out a 1-1 draw thanks to a last minute Eden Hazard equalizer. They (obviously) are no longer in contention for the Premier League. They are also not even in control of their destiny when it comes to Champions League qualification as they sit in sixth, three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal. Chelsea seems to be saving their best performances for the Europa League, where they have made the quarter final stage. Maybe (just maybe) Chelsea sees this as one of the ways to secure Champions League football next season especially as the team seemingly cannot raise their game in the Premier League.
Ultimately, this is not what Chelsea (and Chelsea fans) foresaw when the season began but this is ultimately the reality of the way things stand at the moment. Would Maurizio Sarri still have a job especially considering the fact that he claims to be clueless (at times) when results are not going Chelsea’s way?
We would find out soon enough.

What Is Going On At Chelsea

THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LAST 16 (2) REVIEW
If you saw the first leg of Juventus’s first leg Champions League last 16 encounter at the Vincente Calderon against Atletico Madrid, you would not have felt the need to see the return leg. There were already whispers that spending 100 million Euros on a 34-year old to win the Champions League was a waste based on results of the first leg. If there is one thing you would guarantee in the last five years, it is that Ronaldo never shies away from the big stage, especially in the Champions League. Juventus looked like they meant business and took full advantage of their hunger, their talisman netting a hat-trick and fully deserved their win. All of a sudden, Juventus is back in the Champions League business.
For Atletico Madrid, the approach to this game was very negative right from the onset. It seemed like this team, with all their talent, were intending to sit back and defend for 90 minutes. Even after going two goals down, there was always the chance that they could score a goal and the aggregate score would ultimately be in their favour. But that was not the case. This was probably the most un-Atletico Atletico Madrid performance witnessed in a very long time. In hindsight, they only have themselves to blame.
Manchester City demolish Schalke..
The score-line of the first leg looked like it was a close tie and that Schalke could possibly spring an upset on the Premier League Champions. Manchester City made sure that hope was dashed in the first half. Raheem Sterling and co. were too hot to handle on the night with Schalke so poor, you would be wondering how they managed to even score two goals in the first leg – come to think of it, both goals were penalties and Manchester City had to play most of the second leg with ten men.
Ultimately, Schalke’s door to possibly qualifying for the quarter-finals was shut. Emphatically.
Barcelona advance…
Barcelona advanced to the last eight after beating Lyon in the last 16 with Messi on-song. The only little scare they had was when Lyon scored a goal to halve the deficit on the 58th minute. All in all, it was an easy night for the men from the Nou Camp.
Liverpool dominant in the Allianz Arena..
Bayern Munich needed to keep a clean sheet (which was going to be hard) but ended up chasing the game for the most part. This current Bayern team has no urgency, no leadership. To put their performance into context; Up until Franck Ribery left the pitch on the 61st minute, he was Bayern Munich’s most dangerous player. Franck Ribery is going to be 36 in April! (I know, I know, there is a 34 year old player that scored a hat-trick for Italy’s biggest team, but that is not really the point). Bayern Munich was suspect in some games in the group phases of the Champions League and were only going to last for so long. Till next season.
For Liverpool, they were full of running and energy and took full advantage of the space that Bayern Munich behind while pushing forward and Sadio Manewho was full of running, was duly rewarded with two fine goals. After Mane’s first goal, the game was set-up nicely for Liverpool to sit deep, defend (something that they have been doing very well this season) and hit on the break. Credit to Klopp and his men. It may get tougher from here.

The Definitive Guide to 1×2 Betting in 2019
What is 1×2 betting?
Football markets are many and can be diverse depending on your preferred bookmakers.
However, you have to be knowledgeable in the type of market you want to stake your money upon.
The 1×2 market can be acknowledged to be the most popular market among bookies in the gambling world, not because it is the easiest to make money, but because it is very easy to learn.
This article aims to beams the searchlight on what exactly 1×2 market means, its merits and demerits and how you can make enough profit from the market.
What is 1×2 Market?
One of the many great aspects of 1×2 football betting is that is very easy to learn. Even a novice online gambler can pick up this betting market quickly. Let us explain what the market itself stands for:
• Stands for home to win the match
X stands for the match to end in a draw
• stands for the away team to win the match
Let’s say Chelsea is playing against Liverpool at the Stamford Bridge, ‘1’ means Chelsea will win the match at home ‘X’ means the match will end in a stalemate while ‘2’ means that Liverpool will wallop the blues at the bridge. Like most bet types this match is determined by what they play during 90 minutes and added time, Extra time does not count for you to win this bet. Therefore if you staked on Chelsea to win, if the match is 1-1 after 90 minutes plus added time and it goes into Extra time, the bet is lost.
What Are The Merits of 1X2 bet type
1. 1. The main advantages of playing this bet type are that there are no technicalities and it is very easy to learn and play. All you need to know is that a small team is playing with a big team (e,g Barcelona against Huesca), the probability that Barcelona will beat Huesca at home is very high.
2. This bet type is offered by virtually all bookmakers around the world, and 90% of sports have it. Be it basketball, hockey, horse race or soccer, you can always play 1×2 markets.
3. The odds attached to this market are very predictable and this market can be played as singles
4. This bet type is very easy to forecast
What Are The Demerits of 1×2 bet type
1. 1. This bet type can be very risky because in life nothing is certain. A typical example is when Real Sociedad defeated Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, the odds must bookmakers gave Real Madrid was 1.20 while Sociedad was given 15 odds who would have thought that that result will happen.
2. 2. Odds attached to this bet type although predictable, but can be very small and discouraging especially when staking on big teams to defeat weaker ones. Whenever Manchester city plays the lower teams in the league let’s say, Cardiff or Brighton, the odds is usually 1.10 to 1.15, what gain will you make from that measly odd?. Therefore most people are put off by the odds attached to it.
3. 1X2 bet types is a deceptive market type. Let me explain. For instance, if you play 5 x(draws) in a ticket as multiples, you will make a huge profit if the ticket greens , because draw odds are very high, however, except you have an idea of fixed games ,how will you be able to predict 5 straight draws and be successful, the probability of such ticket coming to fruitfulness is low.
How do you determine when to play 1×2 bet types?
We will start with how to play 1(home win):
You have to be very careful when playing a home team to win straight, this is because even though a team is at home soil, some teams are actually not at their best when playing in front of their fans. Some also have issues with the bad pitch at their stadium and other factors like bans given to fans to home matches and weather conditions. Whichever the case, you have to study if some of these factors are affecting the team you wish to carry to win at home straight.
Moreover, some leagues have very good home team winning records and away win occurs a few times. Some of these leagues are The Iraq league, the Nigerian league, Albanian league, and some African leagues. It will do you no good to play away teams to win in these league no matter the team that is playing except you want to lose money. Therefore it is advisable to play the above league teams to win 90% of their home matches.
Also note that there are certain teams that their homes are like a fortress which can rarely be broken, some of these teams include TNS of wales, Young boys of Switzerland, Juventus of Italy, PSG of France and Al Ahly of Egypt. These teams have an 80% winning ratio at their home turf in their league matches.
Furthermore, consider the opposition teams are playing before you play a team to win straight at home, Even when PSG is playing at home to Barcelona in the champions league, will it be in your best interest to play PSG straight win?…NO!!!
How do you know when to play X (draw)
Playing a straight draw is very profitable to buy a highly risky game. Just playing two or three draws with a little as 10 dollars can yield much, this is because draw odds are very huge, ranging from 2.95 to 7.00 odds, do you know how much you will make if you combo three 7 odds together, that is a lot!! However, caution must be your watchword when playing draws, consider the following:
1. Leagues: Some leagues are masters of the draw, meaning that if there are ten matches in a week, at least five will be drawn, some of such leagues include South American leagues and some lower divisions in England. You will have to forecast properly to know the exact team that will be playing draws and hope your guess is right.
2. Form: Checking the league’s form and past games will let you determine if a particular team will play a draw or not. Also, past meeting among two teams can be a pointer to how a match can end.
3. Strategy and team tactics: Some teams plan ahead to play draw especially when they play against a stronger team. A typical example is an Inter Milan team under Jose Felix Mourinho who went on record of drawing 15 matches in the league. The coach is known for his conservative strategy especially when he comes against attacking teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid. These are some of the things you should consider.
Picking draws is not usually advisable, but whenever you choose the bet type, don’t pick more than 5 draws at most!
How to know when to play 2 (away win)
Playing away team to win on a match day usually comes with big odds, this is because it is assumed that winning away games are usually difficult than home games. To play away team to win, consider the following:
Opposition: which type of opposition is your preferred away team facing?.is it an attacking side or defensive side? Are the strugglers in the league or an above average team?, Do they have injury issues at their defense or suspensions to their best players? Knowing the answers to these questions will guide you to know if you should play your preferred away team to win straight or not.
1. Competitions: Winning away in European competitions is very difficult, particularly if it is the knock out stage, most teams make sure that they have put on their best performance on their home soil than away; therefore you have to be cautious of playing away matches in competitions like European games or the CAF champions’ league. If you ask me, don’t stake high on those competitions on away to win a match.
1. What is at stake? This is a very important question to ask when betting on away teams to win not considering the opposition. Even if Manchester city is playing Huddersfield, are they relegation-threatened? If they (Huddersfield) are fighting for survival and Manchester city is fighting to win the league who has more to lose?. Why must you even stake on such a match where you know it will be very difficult?. Stay away from matches that the stakes are high like the scenario I presented above. Upsets happen and they happen more when a relatively weaker team is relegation bound.
Which bookmaker offers the best odds for 1X2 bet type?
There are various bookmakers who offer the best and reliable odds for a 1×2 bet type, however, it is advisable to stake on this option early on because bookies reduce the odds when the matches draw nearer and some team suffers suspensions and injuries. Some reliable bookmakers who offer this market type are:1xbet.com, Williamshill, bet365, supabets, betfarm, betfair, and sportybets. The odds offered by these bookies on this type of bet are similar to one another and stable to a large extent.
Finally,1×2 bet type is available to interested stakers and punters alike both online and in shops/outlets, however your ability to be prudent, and hardworking will determine if you will make enough profit with this bet type or not.
If you are a huge staker, it is advisable you stake this bet type only as singles, using them as multiples although brings more money but is highly dangerous, stake high on singles and be contented.

Editorial: Germany: Time For a Change Part - 1
If you have been following National Team Football for the past couple of weeks, and by weeks I mean the last one year, you may have noticed certain things happening. For example, Germany winning the Confederations Cup in 2017 with their ‘B Team’ with minimal fuss.
Now, the record goes thus: The team that wins the Confederations Cup does not win the World Cup come the following year.
That in simple terms meant that since Germany won the Confederations Cup, B-Team or otherwise, they were not expected to win the World Cup. But many expected them to, including yours truly.
Also, since 2006, the World Cup winners did not get out of their groups by the time the group stages of the subsequent tournament ended. See Italy after winning the 2006 tournament, Spain in 2010. You could also add France to that list, winning in 1998 and getting knocked-out four years later. But things like that never happens to the German Machine. Oh, were we wrong!
What happened at the World Cup was absolutely shocking. Placed in a relatively easy group with Sweden, Mexico and South Korea, everyone was already looking forward to the knock-out phases for Germany. Leroy Sane surprisingly was left at home and it was Julien Brandt that took his place. In their first game, they lost 1-0 to Mexico and everyone (including yours truly) thought that this was just a blip in Joachim Low’s and Germany’s tournament defence. Then the second game against Sweden came and they won 2-1 thanks to a very late free-kick winner by Toni Kroos and everyone kept talking about ‘resilience’ and ‘spirit’ and the German machine. Germany seemed to have turned a corner. If they had turned a corner at that point, the corner was then blocked by a South Korean side who had nothing to play for after losing their first two games. Germany, being the machine that they are knew that they had to win to stand any chance of qualifying. They did not only ‘not win’, they did not score and lost 2-0. The Germans never get knocked out of competitions like that. The last time that happened in a World Cup was in 1938.
Most of the blame fell on Mesut Ozil, who was vilified for very poor performances by every member of the German National team. Some German legend even went as far as saying that Mesut Ozil had stopped playing for Germany way before the World Cup began (two years actually). Mesut Ozil duly retired. Toni Kroos spoke about the Ozil situation, and recently about Leroy Sane. Things are still the same in Germany. Recently, they played France and were held to a draw despite playing poorly. Over the weekend, they played against the Dutch who has not played in the past two tournaments (the World Cup and the Euros) and are just in a rebuilding process themselves. The Germans duly lost 3-0.
Who is to blame this time? A lot of players have underperformed over the years and it seems that the German talent pool is drying up. Apart from the goalkeeping department, there is not a lot of strong competition in other areas. Germany has not had a very good striker since Miroslav Klose retires. Timo Werner keeps getting moved out wide and Sandro Wagner has retired (his goal-scoring record stands at five goals in eight games).
Is Joachim Low to take most of the blame? The truth is that the coach gets the plaudits when the team does well and should also get the stick when things are turning bad. The Germans are running out of whom to point their fingers to. Could Joachim Low be next?

Is Juventus the Best Team In Europe Right Now Part - 1
When you have won the last seven Serie A titles with little or no competition after not winning any for about 10 years, all would seem to be well with the world right? Well, you are wrong. Very wrong. Juventus does not play like that. Juventus is currently top of the Serie A standings, winning eight from eight games, defeating their closest rivals this season (and last) in Napoli and are currently six points ahead. Also, they are top of their seemingly tough Champions League group with two wins from two, scoring five times and conceding none. That makes it 10 straight wins from 10 in all competitions. With all these statistics flying around, the Holy Grail of Club competition (The Champions League is what I mean, for some of you that like to guess) has always eluded them. To put it in context, Juventus has played in two of the last four Champions League finals and has lost both, once to Barcelona in 2015 and then to Real Madrid in 2017.
To say that they have had some bad luck in the Champions League would be an understatement.
Going further back, between 1995 and 1998, Juventus played in three finals, winning against Ajax (1996), then losing to Borussia Dortmund in 1997 and the Real Madrid in 1998. Then in the 2002-2003, they played against AC Milan, losing on penalties. That means since the rebranding to the Champions League in the 1992-1993 season, they have played in six finals, winning once. That is not a very good record.
But it seems things are about to change. Across Europe, there are just a handful of unbeaten teams in Europe’s top 5 Leagues: Paris St. Germain, who have always failed whenever big teams come to town; Liverpool, whose front three seems to have seriously dipped in terms of their productivity; Chelsea, who are playing some beautiful football but are still adjusting to life under Maurizio Sarri; Manchester City, who have started slowly but are still underdogs in Europe and have already lost at home to Lyon this season in Europe and Borussia Dortmund; who are taking full advantage of Bayern Munich’s slips and are enjoying a new lease of life under Lucien Favre.
Also, the big teams in Europe seem to be all faltering at the exact same time: Real Madrid (Champions League winners for three consecutive years) has not won since September 22nd(heck, they have not scores since then, which amounts to five games); Bayern Munich under Nico Kovac has not won since September 25th and has scored two goals since then; Barcelona who has not won any of their last four League games.
To cap it all up, Juventus went ahead to sign (arguably) the best footballer on the planet in Cristiano Ronaldo. No one needs to tell us that he was not signed to win an eighth consecutive Serie A title for them. If that is not a statement of intent from Juventus, then I have no idea what is.
It is still early days in club competitions, especially the Champions League, but the stars seem to be aligning for Juventus. Can they get over the line this time?

Manchester City win Carabao Cup..
Well, nobody thought that the result would be 6-0, just like the last time that these two sides met. Chelsea defended well for most of the game and were really on the ascendancy. Ultimately, the game ended in penalties. There was obviously the bewildering spectacle of Kepa refusing to come off after being continuously told by Maurizio Sarri come-off. Jorginho missed (with his funny run-up), Aguero, with his poor penalty, did not miss, David Luiz missed, Sane missed and Sterling scored the winning penalty kick. Manchester City celebrated their first trophy of the season. Second, depending on who is counting.
Monaco on the come up..
Since Leonardo Jardim took charge of Monaco after he was initially sacked by the same employer a few months ago (I know, that does not sound right), Monaco has been on a mini-resurgence. It just kind of seems that between the time he was sacked and re-appointed, he has had time to reflect and formulate some sort of escape mission- that would also mean that he had the knowledge that he would be re-appointed and that Henry would not do a very good job. Against Lyon, a team that impressively held mighty Barcelona to a goalless draw, they scored twice, Subasic, their goalkeeper, saved a penalty and they kept a clean sheet. This would have been like a miracle if this happened in December for instance. Ultimately, it seems that they are currently on course to stay in the Ligue 1.
Barcelona (and Messi) turn on the magic..
We are always assured of goals whenever Barcelona plays Sevilla. This weekend, it was no different. Sevilla showed their substance but sometimes, when you have arguably the best player in the world, all that is required is for him to show up. The player I have been trying to describe is Lionel Messi by the way. Messi ended the night with three sublime goals and an assist to boot. With Luis Suarez’s powers seemingly waning, Coutinho still trying to find his feet (even after a year), a lot rests on the shoulder of Lionel Messi, and to a lesser extent, Ousmane Dembele. Whether it is sustainable for them to win the Champions League is yet to be known.
Real Madrid ride their luck against Levante..
To say that Real Madrid played well and deserved their win will be a gross disservice to the Levante players. They created tons of chances, hit the crossbar twice and were seriously to lose to two penalties, particularly the second one that made Real Madrid to win the game. For Real Madrid, they played badly and still one. It is just one of those days at the office especially considering the fact that Levante had already won this season at the Bernabeu.
For Levante, play like this every game and they will probably be in the top half of the table come the end of the season.
