thinking about the fact that wren actually vibes with introverts a lot? i think they enjoy the fact that they're quiet and wren's allowed to talk as much as they want AVJBID

but also they enjoy finding out things about people, and they usually can't read introverts as well as their extraverted friends, so there's a small air of Mystery(TM) that keeps them entertained for a while. if that friend is interesting in general, they'll definitely stick around longer tbh!

wren’s view on alcohol is that they’re just. pretty chill about it. they like the rush of excitement that kicks in after a while, so they’ll definitely indulge if alcohol is available in a social setting, but thanks to their background as a circus performer---surrounded by other performers, whose physical prowess was a detrimental part of their income---it’s been ingrained into them that it’s not something to have in excess.

listen this is SO important.  i just love that about wren.  their hope isn’t naive and it isn’t dependent on anyone or anything beyond themself.  they know that if they want things to be fixed, they need to fix them themself---and it’s often that they struggle, or have no clue how to get it right, but by god they won’t give up until they have.  things will get better OR ELSE.

words elude me today but im Thinking heavily about gilmore and how much he just Adores art. man-made art, in particular, is as fascinating as it is alien to him, even after all this time. he will pay people to create---either their ideas or his own---for the simple purpose of watching them create. he loves the creative process and the fruits of it, and he thinks humans are undeniably creative creatures.

he also loves to see human creativity in high-pressure situations. to him, this is only a fun game. to humans, it could easily be a lawsuit. he is often advised against executing these particular visions.

i think the one person they experience this the most with is their friend louise, who is naturally social and driven and studying somewhere far away from them, which only deepens their fear of losing her. i could talk about their friendship for hours tbh ahksbkd

anyways. i headcanon that the magic hour circus exists in the same universe as every other circus in different media.  it’s come across the ni.ght circ.us.   the ticket sellers got into a brawl bc both circuses had rented the same property on the same dates and had to establish dominance.  also the ringleader found it funny and did not bother to stop them .

wren actually needs physical activity or else they might disintegrate. they don't exactly work out, they just walk around and climb and run (from the consequences of their actions) a lot. they rlly are in motion most of the time bc they have a LOT of excess energy that they dunno what to do with!

wren has endless beef with their dad for being a better cook and not even writing down his recipes before he went and disappeared.

i see the trope of “characters with abandonment issues often distance themselves from others to avoid getting hurt all over again” so many times, and while i think it’s fantastic characterization, wren is just sitting here like 

“nah, i think i’ll befriend everyone immediately and if i get hurt i’ll just cling harder :)”

wren could be bouncing around all day.  i cannot stress this enough.  especially if they have company.  wren is someone with Boundless Energy and if u agree to hang out with them they could fit so many activities into a single day.  a few hours, even.  they could talk to u late into the night.  people energize them and they absolutely could keep going until someone (not them) ends the interaction.

i have Very few braincells atm but both wren's parents disliked traditional school for very different reasons, thus why they decided it wasn't necessary to send wren to school if they could just receive homeschool education in the circus.

some notes on wren's costume for halloween bc they think it is ✨a look✨:

Impermanent glow-in-the-dark green hair dye. It doesn't glow too much bc their hair is dark, but it does leave some iridescent highlights in their hair that they absolutely show off by letting it loose on their shoulders.

Their hat. It's truly no joke that it can shift to practically anything: all one has to do is imagine it, and the hat will do its best to deliver. Wren instructed it to change into the upper half of an angler fish's head: big, bulging milky eyes, long fins, a wire with a green marble at its end. Wren will light up the marble occasionally using illusion magic.

They glued some paper around crafting wire and onto a black face mask to use as a gaping mouth framed by long, thin teeth. In the dark, the mask creates a nice optical illusion on its own, but with an extra sprinkle of Wren's magic it truly becomes depthless and unnervingly akin to deep-sea horrors. When they pull their hat down their face, the sight is a genuine marvel.

The least remarkable thing about their outfit is the loose black shirt they've thrown over themself, which is far from unintentional. Something so plain will more easily draw people's attention to the more exciting parts of their costume, after all!

Using a bit of transfiguration magic, Wren has managed to cover their arms and exposed neck with a fine coat of glittering, fish-like scales. Simus warned them to take pictures of their bare arms and neck so they'd face less difficulties turning back after the fun was over. Wren was surprised with how seamless the scales felt on their skin.

Finally, they stole borrowed something from the circus: their grandmother's fish-scale leggings. She used to monitor the water train back in the day and had plenty of costumes with oceanic themes. The circus often keeps old costumes in hopes of reusing them, so after a bit of asking around and begging Nadége, they happily got their hands on them. The magic on them has worn out slightly, but they still give off a pretty convincing illusion of actual green-and-gold scales.

so wren isn’t a big fan of physical affection, and i believe that’s largely a sensory issue.   they just... do not like the feeling of skin on skin.  or of someone pressing against them and restricting them with a hug.   in a romantic relationship, this is slightly different, because while they do want physical affection, it’ll take them a while to initiate it and won’t be fully comfortable with prolonged contact until much later.   kissing also feels gross so they’ll generally avoid that as well.

Sonthi's parents were Matthew Chater and Sai Kwanjai Joonkiat! They met when they were kids, during one of the circus' visits in Thailand---it was one of those childhood friendships that spark immediately and last about as long as it takes for the parents to grow fatigued and call it a night. Sai fell in love with the circus, but the thought of travelling with it as a performer didn't cross her mind until it reappeared in the same field she'd last seen it all those years ago. Matthew and Sai stumbled into each other again, then, and Matthew helped her reach Gilmore for a chat through a series of misadventures and a lot of magical doors! Matthew was very uncertain and nervous about the whole thing at first, but he soon discovered that Sai was unbending once she set her mind to something, and he had no choice but to tag along for the ride.
