something more modest, something grander

alfred's business, the rook's roost, while serving as a front for his (illegal) information brokerage hub and his (illegal) vigilante activites, serves both as a coffeehouse and a mut.ual aid center.

the coffeehouse is the main way alfred and team checkmate make money legally. here, they serve coffee, tea, and baked goods and have a pay-it-forward system meaning if someone wants to, they can pay for their own meal and if they're feeling generous, they also pay for another person's meal.

the mut.ual aid center, is more informal...paid for out of pocket, these are services that alfred, nell, and myungdae provides their community (newcomers are always welcomed though- they get a lot of students) for free. examples of mut.ual aid that they practice include:

nell fixing phones & laptops and other electronics ( and making fake ids if you need one )

myungdae tutors in reading, writing, and basic math

alfred keeps a pantry stocked with canned foods and kimchi in case someone needs food

once a month they host a mut.ual aid event in which they make a large batch of hot food for the people around to share and eat together. often other businesses in the area will come around and also offer their services for free ( ex. the hairdresser- this is usually when alfred gets his hair cut )

in return for their work, usually alfred never has to call a mechanic to fix the machines because,one of community members does it for him

another example is that when it comes to myungdae's adopted kids, they never need to worry about getting a babysitter because one of the moms in the community is always happy to look over them

as a result of years of doing this, rook's roost has established itself as a cornerstone, respected both by the community and ( we can plot this but i'm hoping also ) for the local gangs in the area. they don't discriminate amongst the poor who to help- someone is always guaranteed at least a warm meal and coffee. so if someone does try to mess in public with the coffeehouse...well there's a bunch of people who will not be happy.

because it's mut.ual aid, not charity, they don't accept donations....if you give something, they will be obligated to at least give you coffee in return.

there have been rich people and politicians though who have attempted to profit off of their work....alfred was quick to scare them off.

should something happen to the coffeehouse though....i like to think that the community would help alfred rebuild it <3

HI LYNNIE <3 <3 <3 i am here!! with ur chara development questions, specifically for my fav crazy girl, quinn :'D - feel free to skip any you're not feeling: Is she aware of the fact that she is slowly spiraling? Does that ever scare her/has she tried anything to stop her descent? Alternatively is this something she is starting to embrace?

𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐃𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐋𝐎𝐏𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐍𝐍 (𝟏/𝟓).

Quinn actually does know she is slowly spiraling. As she originally wanted to become a psychiatrist, growing up with a mother who was mentally ill. She went far enough in her education to be able to identify and diagnose the symptoms of psychotic disorders. It's actually what plays against her, because Quinn is an expert on the topic, she does believe it can and only should happen to others - patients - and definity not Her - the doctor - how ironic is that. Her deep knowledge and cold realism is painfully mixed with delusions she finds comforts in - delusions that come from her Pride as well as from the disorder itself, trying to minimize how badly it's getting in her head. There are three stages for a schizophrenic disorder and she can tell she is on the first : Prodromal. The phase comes with various mood changes, anxiety, sleep disturbances, irritability, anger, and behaviours on the spectrum of obsession-compulsion and dissociative episodes. Her sleep disturbances show with these nightmares she has been having recently - ones where she can't truly say if she's awake, if she's hallucinating or simply fully asleep, she often dreams of blood and other versions of herself. Irritability and anger come easier with time, especially in high tension situations, during a face to face between Naeun and the Black Fang gang for example - little hold on her emotions, reactions, it escalates fast and usually over the smallest details. Obsessive behaviours with this obsession over Felicity she developped as she spent nights and nights digging and following and digging into the girl's life and past. And finally, dissociative episodes when facing The Black Night, along with auditive hallucinations. In order to keep head in place, she has continous inner dialogues with herself, sitting down, trying to rationalize her thoughts, she spends an obsessive amount of time in front of mirrors as well, as if the sight of her own person helps to anchor herself into reality. This trick however won't work forever if what she sees in the mirror starts morphing, moving, talking out of hallucinations - that would sign the beginning of another stage. She refuses to become her mother, she's scared to turn into everything she loathed in the woman who failed to raise her. Quinn is a ticking bomb however. Especially with the path she chose, as a vigilante. In her case it's a paranoid schizophrenia to be more specific, and so, the deeper she will let her obsessions for justice and punishments gain her, the more she will use it as an excuse, the lesser she will see herself as losing her mind but "doing what's good". Anything or anyone who will show her opposition or point out her sick head will only increase her paranoid thoughts and new perception of this reality : believing the outsiders simply Don't want a better world like she does - she will flip the narrative and lose sight on what's truly going on with her.

just a reminder that even if myungdae is the black knight and has gone through more than his fair share of life-threaten situations, he is, in fact, kind of a coward when it comes to getting hurt-

aka the first time he needed to get stitches for his wounds as the black knight, it took alfred ( and nell on the sidelines ) about an hour to get him to just sit down so his wound could be taken a look at :'D

He knows Hyuk leads a rather stressful life thanks to his job and has little patience for incompetency, so it’s a comforting sight to see Hyuk more relaxed for once, a little looser…and on that note, I do think on the reasons they get along so well is because they both aren’t really a fan of small talk?? Like if there’s nothing to say, then they don’t feel the need to fill it?? Basically they can probably sit together for long periods of time doing their own thing.

( and bc I’m an overachiever ) In the black knight au, during the five years he was on the run, in a moment of homesickness, Patrick did once call hyuk’s cellphone from a payphone, but didn’t say anything. he really just missed hyuk’s voice and wanted to be reminded of home for a moment ;-;

Removing the hat, Myungdae sets it on the table next to Nell's computer. He doesn't look her or Alfred in the eye as he unties the knot holding his mask up. "I'm not quite sure what you mean."

"...You're doing it again."

"Excuse me?"

Nell sighs, hands dropping. "Look, I know you're not exactly the best at the vulnerability thing, but don't you think we deserve to at least know who he is?"

"He's a private detective looking into ANACHRON."

"Well thanks for enlightening us. I already feel so much more in the loop." Alfred scoffs, depositing his gloves on another table. "C'mon, we already know that. For one thing, he shows up enough that we had to give him a code name. And do you know how hard he makes my job? Guy's even more thorough than the police."

Myungdae peels his gloves off. Why doesn't that surprise him? There's a reason they call Hyuk at one point, one of Seoul's greatest detectives, down the drain.

"Myungdae," Nell says. "Every time he shows up, you lose your nerve. Even when you're not the Black Knight. It's like you're scared of him- you can trust us, you know?"

"At the very least, you can tell us who he is to you. Give us a reason we need to keep him out of this."

Myungdae rubs a temple. He turns around, bracing the ledge for the table. His leg is ACHING again.

"...I met him in college." He hears Nell's chair squeak towards him. The weight of the table shifts. Alfred's shoes come into sight. "He was my best friend. There and after we graduated."

Cheeks red from the punch that turned out to be a lot stronger than he realized, Patrick stumbles a step towards Hyuk. His sleeves are folded up to his forearms and the first two buttons of his shirt are unbuttoned. He beams at Hyuk and gives him a wide if not lazy smile. "I have a puzzle for you: what's stubborn, fast, and is known for its innate homing ability via magnetoreception?"

eu já te falei que pensei em vários kajsdhkasjfkfkas por exemplo, a minkyung e o seojoon com certeza brigariam por conta de terem ido treinar um sem o outro, ou até mesmo ir treinar com outras pessoas; a yoona e o myungdae com qualquer coisinha como ele estar fazendo um exercício de alongamento errado ou ter dormindo no meio de um filme; e o yoosik e a nayoung eu imagino brigando por ela não ser de responder mensagens muito rápido, principalmente quando ele começa a real gostar dela

15. me conte um fato aleatório sobre um dos seus personagens.

a yoona ama ver filmes da barbie quando bebe além da conta, principalmente quebra nozes e lago dos cisnes (o preferido dela), que foram produções que ela estrelou quando mais nova, tanto que quando toca as músicas ela levanta e tentar dançar mesmo sem sapatilha e com falta total de equilíbrio 

17. me conte um headcanon soft que você tem sobre o nosso ship.

eu pensei em algo sobre a yiseul e o kieran a um tempinho atrás que é tipo: imagina a yiseul estando em época de provas, e ela claramente está com medo de ir mal por causa da pressão tudo e tal, mas ao mesmo tempo ela não quer se preocupar o kieran com isso. então pensei o seguinte, um dia, que eles não combinaram dele ir pegar ela na escola, dela ficar estudando lá até mais tarde, só que ela ficou por tanto tempo lá que não viu passar as horas e nem as mensagens do kieran no celular. ai, quando ela finalmente termina de estudar e vai sair da escola, encontra ele lá, esperando por ela no carro! eu imagino que ele teria descoberto talvez por alguma amiga dela que ela ficou estudando até mais tarde, e resolveu esperar ela. eles teriam conversado e a yiseul finalmente teria pedido ajuda pra ele na matéria, ai naquela noite eles ficariam estudando juntinhos 🥺🥺🥺 (com uma recompensa depois, é claro rsrs)

Jongyul e Myungdae vivem dando presentes estranhos e inesperados um para o outro, então acredito que é um empate. Headcanon da rodada: eles trocam “presentes” muito, muito mesmo. Geralmente são coisinhas que eles mesmos fizeram ou estão trabalhando em; ajuda eles a se inspirarem mutuamente.

Do they have any pet peeves?

For someone who can be difficult to be around ( aka there are just not a lot of environments that he feels comfortable in or can even tolerate ), he doesn’t actually have that many…mostly because he tends to zone out if he’s not in Black Knight mode so he wouldn’t know :’D

That being said, people who like to scare off the pigeons for fun is probably one. He also hates analog clocks and especially the sound of ticking clocks, but that’s less of a pet peeve and more of a legitimate fear.

Their comfort read? (could be a book, magazine, comics, etc)

Greek and Roman mythology of any kind- he devoured them both in secondary school and has now returned to them because they’re familiar to him, he knows what happens, and therefore that makes them safe. It’s the reason when the university asked him what literature he specializes in, he picked Greek and Roman Mythology because he knows them both like the back of his hand.

If the book they are reading turns out to be shit, do they push through  just for the sake of finishing it, or do they move on and find something else?

Myungdae barely reads anything that isn’t related to his classes so even if he does like the book he’s currently reading, he might forget to come back and finish it 😢 that being said, if the book he is reading isn’t that engaging, he’ll probably just drop it and find something else to do ( when the brain fog isn’t kicking in :| ). it does frustrate/upset him though not being able to put the energy into finishing everything he read because that’s what he used to be able to do and now?? he can’t even summon the willpower to even start a book :’(

Their comfort tv show / film

He doesn’t watch a lot of tv shows/films because a lot of media has content that makes his body shut down…that being said, Nell has dragged him over for a Jane Austen movies/series marathon once and he quite enjoyed it <3

Thankfully, I do not have many similarities with Myungdae because bruh, he’s been through a lot, I promise you, my life is much stabler <3 that being said, this is going to intersect with Patrick too, so we both work in academic settings although I work more in administration- he’s a teacher.

We’re good at keeping a cool head in the face of crisis.

We’re also both very content to stay in the background and do our own thing.

What brings you the most joy about writing this character, right now?

I don’t know if I can say writing him brings me joy necessarily since he’s really going through the wringer and that hurts…BUT I will say, it is very interesting to me to be able to write and explore this version of him since in his main verse, he’s much more stable, a very tranquil person in essence….whereas here I get to see what happens if that tranquility is taken away. How does he react to that, how does he cope with it and essentially how does he move forward?

That, and of all of my characters, he ( Patrick ) seem to bring out the most ‘literature’ side of my writing if that makes any sense…whereas say someone like Mana and Lam would be more direct, straight to the point, Myungdae tends to be more…roundabout, elegant, one might say ( although simplicity doesn’t mean it’s not elegant ), I think a better comparison is he speaks the way you might expect an orator would. Sophisticated. Makes me wish I could write like that in my writing outside of Tumblr :’D

Who would win in a fight, you or them?

Hands down, Myungdae, but if I did win, I’d then have to go through at least two, three more people, you know who you are :’)

additional hcs regarding annie's backstory

cw for literary gore & mentions of abusive mental wards

so, when her co-worker/colleague was beheaded, not only was it a clean cut, but also the head landed in her lap. she still has nightmares about looking down at her lap and feeling the blood pour over her legs

one of the major reasons this hostage situation lasted for two weeks was due to incompetence on the politicians and the police's part. the law enforcement delayed in making the rescue despite having the numbers and the force necessary to overpower the kid*nappers.

outsiders would note that the police assigned to the case were simply lounging outside the barrier and not doing anything else.

the excuse given by the authorities was that they were 'waiting on orders' to which the politicians also said that it was a precarious situation and therefore required 'great delibration'

as the sole survivor amongst the victims, annie was stashed into a mental ward especially when it became apparent that she was severely traumatized; unfortunately, the director of the hospital was also in cohoots with the politicians responsible for incident and he was exploiting the patients....combined with being cared for by an incompetent staff ( which annie herself knows since she was studying to be a doctor to begin with ), annie was treated more like a prisoner there if anything

basically, they wanted her to disappear from society because she was a reminder of their failure over handling the situation

and as for her perpetuators? well, they're still in prison, but they're alive. and remorseless too 🙃

since his own hunger games, patrick is proficient with a knife and prefers to keep a pocket knife on hand and under his pillow too. if he's not reading, then he's probably carving something out of wood with it- nothing too fancy. it's a good way to keep his mind off of, well everything :'D

patrick’s hunger games

bc unfortunately, i had ideas on how patrick survived the hunger games and what life looked like for him afterwards:

he had a mentor, but while there was an escort and his district partner to help him out,  he basically looked out for himself and rely solely on himself for the games.

he’s knew from the very beginning, his chances were low. he might have been one of the older tributes but...he wasn’t very strong. or athletic. he realizes early on, if he wanted to survive he had to be shrewd. observant.

while he learned the basics of using a knife, he didn’t focus as much on combat skills so much as on survival skills: how to make fires, distinguishing between the edible plants and the poisonous ones, how to treat wounds. how to make traps.

befriends the male tribute from district 8; they bond over a love for reading...for a moment he considers making an alliance with him

scores on the lower-average side for the rankings, but manages to charm a far number of ppl during his interview.

his games take place in an abandoned university ground. a mixture of nature with manmade buildings. he avoids the first bloodbath because he knows he won’t be able to beat the careers- manages to escape with a backpack, which he uses to smack a tribute out of the way. it comes with a hook and some rope.

teams up with the female tribute of his district for the first half of the games before they split when they’re down to six tributes.

becomes a dark knight ( haha *winks at black knight au* ) figure in the arena- while with his district partner, he spent that time figuring out where the generators are

a day after they split up, he makes his move. he sets off the traps. three tributes are gone in one day. he also pisses off the career pack too as he managed to take out one of the three remaining. one of the four tributes he killed in one go is the male tribute from district 8 ( if he feels any regret there, he doesn’t acknowledge it ).

the career pack kills his district partner in retaliation....he comforts her in her last moments. the look in her eyes haunts him.

people like an underdog in these cases so he gets a few sets of supplies for his traps. they’re down to the final three tho....the two remaining careers temporarily revive their alliance to take him down.

he manages to kill one by sheer luck. he stabs one in the gut. the other, he lures under an unstable pillar which collapses on them both. the final career tribute is dead and patrick comes out with a fractured leg. the last thing he sees before he’s pulled out of the arena is his fingers stained with blood.

the aftermath:

the capitol adore him for his cool and collected demeanor that he retained both coming in and out of the games. the districts, including his own, hate him, however, for him retaining his polite demeanor, which is interpreted as callousness.

this is not helped by the fact that all the tributes he mentors, none of them come back alive.

when he comes home, his dear friend and his parents are there to welcome him back... nothing is the same though. his adoptive parents basically disown him especially since he is rewarded his own house in the victor’s village.

he doesn’t blame them. they’re scared of him. he would be too.

all mentors have their way of coping. patrick’s way happens to be burying himself into the meager collection of books he has amassed over the years. and writing. so much writing to the point that his hand aches. and occasionally going to the community home to read to the kids there. even if they don’t like him all that much.

it’s okay, he doesn’t really like himself much either. but he lives on, even with the nightmares. even with the stained fingers.

someone has to take this...cursed position. it’s his punishment for surviving, he justifies it as. still he can hear it. the unhappy murmurs amongst the people, the sounds of revolution.

the girl with eyes of fire sits across from him on the way to panem. discreetly, he begins to sharpen his knives- he’ll be ready when it starts.

ironically, even tho nell isn't technically fluent in speaking korean, she is fluent when it comes to reading hangul. this is bc when sarah jane was alive, nell decided to start learning korean in an effort get to know her better. however, since there weren't many korean speakers in her area and bc nell was a very awkward and shy teenager, most of this learning ended up just being reading rather than actual speaking practice :'D

she kept up with reading hangul even after sarah jane died as a means of tracking down the origins of that particular video.
