somewhere, in one of the books that joshua had stolen for you, with a well worn cover and soft pages, with faded ink painting the front cardstock, you'd read something that stuck with you. i want someone to promise me a million kisses.
it was one of those passing thoughts that embeds itself into your psyche, a physical thing lodged between the folds of your brain, making itself evident every time you tried to forget it. a million kisses... and you'd never had one.
hell, you'd never even wanted to. you were everything manticore wanted you to be; loyal to the greatest extent, dedicated to your training, dominating the rest of the x5 series by a long shot â well, alongside your best friend alec.
alec, who really kept you motivated and on your toes, because he was so effortlessly good. he could sprint the entire forest on the grounds' base three times while you'd be on your second. he could pick you up with ease, and often did, urging you to work on your strength that little bit more so that you could do the same to him.
he was lifting you with one arm, actually, when you'd both been called back to your cells abruptly. it was awkward, in a way, moreso than it would have been for any normal human being, because of how unfamiliar you were with awkward situations. having to be sat down so you could properly address the guard in front of you, the same one who'd just been watching the both of you try and lift each other like barbells?
it only managed to get worse, somehow, when you were both ushered into your cell, followed by one of the directors, a woman with short blonde hair and a fierce stare.
something about this felt like a punishment, or a bad omen. how could you know, then, what a turning point this was going to be for you? the both of you?
"stand down, 494, 490." her lips are quirked with knowledge she isn't sharing, her hands folded neatly behind her back. "no need for formalities. not... for this."
you know better than to say a word out of turn, and so does alec, but you feel his confusion radiating off of him, a mirror image of your own, in the way his shoulders tense back.
her lips curl higher, a tight lipped smile that looks almost sinister in the dull lighting of your cell. "you are both aware of the situation with our labs, i imagine," she continues, slowly, like she's waiting for one of you to piece it together. "all of our genetic data, up in flames, and no way to continue creating soldiers to uphold the legacy the two of you are sure to bring."
directors do not ever come in with compliments, especially so strong, without something up their sleeves. "unless..."
it's one word, but it hits you and alec like a wave. him first, as he draws in a sharp breath, and then you, your stoic expression faltering at once. unless they use their current x5s to make those soldiers.
"it's only natural to pair you two off, what with how... close, you've gotten, over these years." there was a shared trauma that rooted the two of you to each other. him, being a clone of x5-493, and you, of 491.
something was off in their coding, a mixture of genetics and dna that didn't mesh. people were tightlipped about 493 and the seemingly endless amount of death he left in his wake, but they were sure to remind you about 491, the only one who, seemingly, kept his head screwed on straight the rare times that it was.
i want someone to promise me a million kisses... did she feel the same way? did he manage a million before his life was taken? you couldn't help but wonder it, especially with how many times the words killer kisser were thrown in your face. maybe that was why you were so attached to the idea of being kissed. you were stuck on the outside of a secret, wondering how kisses could render a troubled man's mind silent for a little while.
you had zoned out without realizing, stuck in a past that didn't belong to you. "are we clear?" the woman asks, her eyes lingering particularly long on you.
your face flushes with shame. shame for not listening, for missing the entire purpose of this conversation because you'd been daydreaming about an obscene amount of kisses for one person to receive.
alec speaks up for you, saving you from a potential reprimand or punishment, as he often did. "all clear."
"good." her eyes stay on yours for a beat too long, like she's daring you to break, before she nods once. "you've got one hour."
and with that, she stalks out of the room, the guards waiting on either side of your open door stepping out of line to trail behind her. the door hisses shut, and then it's just you and alec. you should know why. if you'd listenedâ
"you could have been less obvious, you know," alec says with a scoff of laughter, as he breaks his straight-backed stance and crosses to your bed in the corner. he sinks down on it, strong enough that his weight bounces on the springy mattress, legs spread open as he made himself right at home.
you blink once, twice. "less obvious with what?"
"oh, i don't know," his lips twist in mock thought, before they tilt into a dazzling smile, "starin' off like you don't even know where you are."
"i was justâ"
"not listening. yeah, established, nelly." alec's eyebrows raise in his amusement, strong arms folded nearly over his chest. "you're gonna be confused as hell when i start taking my clothes off, then."
you splutter, wordless sounds falling out in a flustered heap. "what?"
his head falls back in a fit of laughter, loud enough that it echoes off of the walls. "god, you really weren't listening!"
"just spit it out! what are you talking about?"
slowly, the smile tapers away, his laughter trails off, and you're just looking at each other. "gonna have to copulate, you and i."
your expression drops. any trace of amusement dissipates, a cold, icy feeling of dread flooding your veins. no. no. you couldn't. not with him. not when it would ruinâ
a million kisses, a million kisses, a million kisses.
it always came back to that, didn't it? "no," you say aloud firmly, like your rejection can somehow reverse the fact that it has to happen. has to, because you would never betray a direct order. this was something being entrusted to you. "alec..."
"relax," he says, his hands up in surrender. "i'm not gonna just... force you to, nelly, c'mon." his hands fall into his lap again, a sigh leaving his mouth. "s'not easy for me either, this. i mean, you're my best friend."
was he suggesting that things would change once this started? that thought made your blood feel cold in your veins, ice crystallizing in the sinew, making your bones feel heavy and stiff.
"nelly." alec snaps his fingers, drawing your attention back to him and not the dread in your stomach. it always works, when he calls you the name he'd not-so-affectionately given you during training, once. negative nelly & smart alec. "c'mon, it's notâ it's not gonna be that bad. kinda bruisin' my ego that you're this torn up about it."
you choke on a laugh, your fingers lifting to run through your hair. "shut up, alec."
"'shut up, alec,'" he mimics back at you, one corner of his mouth lifting higher in a softer grin. "has that ever worked, nell?"
you shake your head, in exasperation and answer, finally crossing the small expanse of the room to drop down onto the edge of your bed next to him. his thigh is pressed up against yours, a warm, familiar comfort when everything feels uncertain.
it's loaded now, this silence that falls between you. heavy like a weight and thick like fog. his eyes are on you âyou can feel them, tooâ and it's jarring, how one direct order can flip an entire world on its axis.
you turn to meet those green eyes of his, and then alec's leaning in, suddenly, and it takes a blink for you to realize it. you startle, feeling hot and icy and flustered all at once. "iâve never done this,â you blurt out, and how fucking embarrassing is that, confessing it like a sin?Â
âin what world do you think i have?â alec shoots back, his eyebrows raising in punctuation to the question. âiâd rather it be with you than someone else.âÂ
your heart is racing uncomfortably quick, an unfamiliar flutter against your ribcage. âokay.âÂ
âyeah?â he asks, and his large hand lifts, too, to rest his warm palm on the side of your cheek. his fingertips graze behind your ear, tangling in your soft hair. âyeah, okay, nelly.âÂ
his thumb grazes gently over your cheekbone, like a final reassurance before youâre no longer dipping your toes into this idea but diving fully into its depths. his fingers on the back of your neck guide you toward him, until your breaths are mingling and getting to know each other.Â
your lips meet. the world stops.
it makes sense, now, how 491 could leash 493 with nothing but the press of her lips. it also makes sense why she stayed, despite all of the warning signs he must have given off, if alecâs lips were any indicator of how benâs were.Â
the kiss is tentative at best, at first. heâs not coming any closer, and youâre sat ramrod straight on the bouncy mattress, and the only thing connecting you besides your mouths is the hand he keeps on your cheek. you imagine that this is how first kisses always feel; awkward and uncertain, as this new kind of trust builds itself from the ground up.
one kiss out of a million. how were you supposed to kiss anyone else, now, when this one felt so special?
he pulls back first, but his hand stays on your face, the other sneaking its way across the space between you and landing on yours in lap.Â
ânot so bad, was it?â alec asks, a reassuring smile gracing his face. his thumb returns the gentle strokes over your cheek, his eyes sweeping over the expression you wear.Â
no, it wasnât that bad. but your mind isnât on the kiss but whatâs supposed to come next. âhow long are we supposed to⌠umâŚâÂ
youâd never been the shy type around alec, but suddenly now, it feels like every word is lodged tightly in your throat. suddenly, he feels like a stranger instead of your best friend, this territory unfamiliar and scary, in its own way.Â
âuntil youâre pregnant,â he says easily â and of course itâs easy for him, heâs not the one that has to carry a genetically enhanced baby to term. âbutââÂ
âno,â you say, raising a hand to cut him off. âno, i heard you.âÂ
âbut, we donât have to start now, nelly,â he slows his words down, like delivering the blow more gently will somehow lessen the sting. âwe donât. itâs⌠itâs an order, yes, but youâre still my best friend, and i want you comfortable.â
that did reassure you. youâd have to commit to the orders given eventually, but for now? this was just⌠a prolonged break in the courtyard, where you could hang out without precaution.Â
âkinda like this new development, though,â he adds, that wicked grin of his tugging up onto his mouth, as he wraps his arms around your waist and lifts you up. you barely manage to squeak out the noise of surprise caught in your throat, before youâre settled in his lap. alecâs always been strong, but itâs so different, having him use that strength with you. âcould get used to it.âÂ
âshut up,â you grumble half-heartedly.
he grasps the collar of his shirt to drag you in. âorder received.â and his mouth closes around yours once again; your second kiss of a million.Â
â
Ëâ
âstop it, thatâs notââ you huff out a hard, frustrated breath, your fingers closing around alecâs wrist. âthatâs not what where your hands are supposed to go.âÂ
alec had you sat comfortably in his lap again, after the day prior, you both learned that, despite the circumstances, it was a nice place to be. you were close enough that you could smack him if you had to, and clearly, you did.Â
âsânot my fault that youâre being a tease,â he grumbles in your ear, his lips so close to the sensitive skin that shivers trail down your spine. âsittinâ all pretty in my lap, not letting me follow orders.âÂ
âoh, bite me,â you shoot back at him, your grip on alecâs wrist tightening as you yank it away from your ass. you can feel the heat of his skin even through the thick fabric of your camo cargos, and itâs completely distracting.Â
his free handâs finger comes up to jab you firmly in the sternum. âyou wonât let me.âÂ
âi thought this was hard for you, too,â you argue, reaching up to grab his other hand now, the former still tightly in between your fingers. you knew the second you let it go, heâd not-so-subtly slide it right back down to your ass all over again, and where would you be? a rock â you â a hard place.Â
alec snatches his hand back quickly before you can grab that one, his eyebrows bouncing once in his amusement. âtrust me, nelly, itâs very hard.âÂ
you stare at him, unblinking for a long few seconds, before it clicks in your mind â and the feel of what was very hard presses against the core of you. your hand releases his, and you smack him once with the left, twice with the right. âalec!âÂ
alec cackles, head falling back with his laughter. his hand, always so much quicker than you, catches one wrist, and then the other, in his lithe fingers. his other arm snakes around your waist and thereâs a blink before youâre suddenly flipped on your back.
on your back, and heâs hovered above you, your pinned wrist firmly above your head and pressed lightly into the mattress. âyouâre getting soft on me,â he pants, settled in between your legs, knees nudging them further apart. âyou used to beat my ass when weâd spar.âÂ
âyouâre playing dirty.âÂ
âam not,â he huffs out like a petulant child, âyouâre just not playing. too worried up in that head about all of the logistics here.âÂ
âarenât you?â you ask him, and itâs genuine; how had 24 hours passed, and suddenly this was something he could just accept? you and him, engaging in things that best friends didnât do. did they? âarenât you afraid ofâŚâ your face reddens, your turn now to feel like a little kid. âdoing it?âÂ
alecâs shoulders lift. ânot when itâs with you.âÂ
he says it so genuinely that you know itâs true, the confidence of the words enough to take your breath away.Â
youâd never thought of it like that. sure, itâs intimidating, breaching this gap of things youâd done and things you hadnât, but⌠with him, surely it couldnât be anywhere near as bad as you were thinking.Â
âplus,â he adds as an afterthought, âwe already agreed it wasnât going to change a thing, didnât we? sâjust work.âÂ
just work. it didnât feel like just work, but you were always reading too much into things, anyways. thatâs why you and alec just worked. he was the laidback to your on edge.
you sigh. heâs getting to you. heâs unnaturally good at reading all of your fears written in your eyes and unpacking each of them, explaining them to you so they werenât so scary anymore. âjust tell me what to do. we can lie to the directors again, if we have to, if you just wanna⌠i dunno, chill out. could kiss again.âÂ
âalec.âÂ
âsuggestion!â he raises his free hand in defense, before he lets it drop down to your thigh. âjust a suggestion.âÂ
it was a good suggestion, too. unfortunately for you, fortunately for him. you didnât want to get too comfortable in these uncharted territories, out of fear itâd all get muddled and then where would you be? too uncomfortable to be friends, too familiar not to be.Â
âkiss me.â your mouth moves before youâve even realized the words are out, floating between the two of you like a declaration.
he moves his hand from your wrists and lets it fall in the open expanse of your neck. his fingers are cold this time, even though your blood is hot. âyeah?â it feels achingly familiar to the gentle way heâd said it the day prior. âalright.âÂ
âalright.âÂ
is it supposed to be this awkward? firsts were always awkward. this had to be normal. if you started to think about how maybe it wasnât normal, and you were embarrassing yourself, and he was embarrassing himself, and everything was about to be ruined, youâdâ
alec leans in again, but he doesnât kiss you on the lips, like you expected. instead, his mouth finds your jaw, teeth grazing the skin lightly, lips pressing reverently on the bone as he sucks the little mouthful of skin between them.Â
you gasp, your eyes fluttering closed, eyelashes as soft as butterfly wings on your cheekbone. ârelax,â he breathes, hot breath on hot skin making you squirm beneath him, âi know what iâm doinâ.âÂ
âoh, do you?â you smile, a bit dazed as his tongue traces along the line of your jaw until he reaches the space beneath your ear.
âmhm.â he leaves a trail of wet, warm kisses down the side of your neck, then back up your throat. âthought about this all night. know what iâm doinâ.âÂ
oh. no wonder heâd been pretty accepting of their circumstances. alec spent all of night prior thinking about you, and how heâd pick you apart.Â
the thought makes another shiver run down your spine, a warm pool in your lower stomach. âalecââÂ
âhere,â he interrupts, halting your train of thought before it delves again. âput your hand here,â he pants softly into your sensitive skin, his fingers finding yours and guiding them underneath the gray fabric of his shirt. you feel every muscle on his abdomen, feel each flex beneath the cold touch of your fingers. âyeah, thatâs it.âÂ
alec straightens up a little so that he can curl his own hands beneath his shirt, tugging it up and over his head. it falls in a heap at his feet, and heâs on you again a second later, his lips marking a wet trail of kisses up your throat. once he reaches your chin, he continues the onslaught, capturing your lips in a firm kiss.Â
this one is different than the one the night prior. itâs more confident, sure of himself. his tongue swipes at your bottom lip, and in your surprised gasp, he tucks it between your lips. that part of the kiss is tentative, like enacting the things heâd thought about was more nerve wracking than heâd let on.
you smile. he drags his teeth across your puffed bottom lip. âoh, you like that?â he asks against the soft skin of your mouth, arrogance coating every one of his words. âmm, okay.âÂ
his hands run down your sides, hooking beneath your shirt and bunching it up in his fists. âthis okay?â he asks, lifting his head enough to search your eyes.
you nod, taken aback, almost, by the flood of black overtaking his irises. âitâs okay.âÂ
his grin is mesmerizing. had he always been so attractive? had he always looked like something sculpted and molded, just for you, and youâd only just noticed? âokay,â he echoes, and he nudges your extended arm with his elbow, âlift your arms for me.âÂ
neither of you really know what youâre doing, but he has a little bit of an upperhand, what with the fantasies heâd created in his head.Â
âwhat all did you think about?â you ask him, tracing your eyes over his face to keep from thinking about how he was undressing you, and you were slowly being beared to him fully.
alecâs eyebrows twitch, his eyes lifting from your bare skin up to yours again. âlast night?âÂ
âyeah. i wanna know.âÂ
he shakes his head. âno, nelly,â he laughs under his breath, his heavy-lidded eyes raking over your body again. âmânot lettinâ you know. youâre shakinâ in your boots already.âÂ
âwell, then what did you do? just lay in bed, thinkinâ about me?â you shoot back, your mouth dropping into a pout at the denial.Â
alecâs lips quirk. âsomething like that.âÂ
âalecââ youâre cut off by his lips pressing to yours again. his fingers run reverently down your chest, his touch shuddery as they graze over your breasts. he groans, and the air in your lungs stutters hard in your chest. every thought is shattering to pieces before you can think them, focused instead on the feel of his hands on you in places that you didnât think anyone would ever touch.
âi know youâre scared,â he mumbles in your mouth, his hand drifting lower, slowly but steadier than before. âso i want you in control. in caseââ his touch comes to a stop at the buttons on your camo cargos. alec pauses like heâs dazed, clearing his throat. âin case you want to stop. at any point.âÂ
heâs such an arrogant dickhead most of the time, one that youâve come to adore in every possible way, but here? now? heâs the sweetest person youâve ever met.Â
âhere, lift your hips for me,â his nimble fingers have already undone the button, before youâd even blinked, âgood girl â see? mâso proud of you, baby.âÂ
baby. heâd never called you baby before. your smile is immediate, even as you feel like youâre being electrocuted with how your skin is buzzing. his knuckles light a fire down you as they brush lightly against your thighs, your calves.Â
your hand lifts to rest under his chin, tilting his head up to look at you again. how many kisses is this now? you canât even think, now, not as you drag him in for another kiss. five? six? not enough, is the simple answer.
alec entertains the kiss for a few seconds before heâs pulling back, even taking a step away. your body chills at the loss of his heat, and the self awareness of how you must look to him. mostly naked, sprawled backwards on your bed, looking up at him with big, wide eyes. you open your mouth to say something snarky to him, anything to quell the heavy silence, when he whispers, âyouâre so damn beautiful, nelly.âÂ
he undoes the buttons on his pants quickly, shoving them down his muscular thighs and pooling at his ankles. itâs intimidating, staring into the eyes of someone who was your best friend through and through, while neither of you are wearing anything besides undergarments.Â
this was the guy whoâd talked you out of making any rash decisions after youâd had the insult of killer kisser thrown in your face, all because of the girl your dna was cloned from. who squeezed your hands and told you to fuckinâ ignore them. what do they know? whoâd been a cell apart from you in your psyops isolation, making sure he wasnât infected with whatever rotted benâs mind into darkness, and you werenât susceptible to falling into hi
alec steps around you to sink onto the mattress beside you, shifting backwards until his back hits the concrete wall, turning so that heâs facing straight forward. his hands pat his thighs, nodding his head in gesture â or maybe to get you to stop ogling him like he was someone new and not your alec.
âlookinâ at me like you donât know me,â he mumbles, reaching out to snatch your elbow when you donât move. itâs intimidating. sitting in his lap with so little separating the two of you? of course you were hesitating! âdonât be ridiculous. mâstill the guy you pushed down the stairs five years ago.âÂ
âthat,â you exhale shakily, as you sit down on his thighs, desperately trying to ignore the heat beneath you, and the heat between your legs, âwas an accident.â
âbull.â he moves his hands to the clasps of your bra, undoing each hook individually, keeping his eyes locked on yours. âi saw how you looked at me before you did it.âÂ
you bristle, shoving him back by the shoulder until his back presses against the cool concrete. âlike iâm looking at you now?âÂ
slowly, he tugs the straps of your bra down your arms, his grin faltering as his eyes drift downward at the same time. âyeah.â he clears his throat. clears it again. âyeah, like youâre lookinâ at me now.âÂ
your eyes follow his, and you suck in a slow, deep breath. somehow, the fucker had talked his way into taking your bra off without you even noticing. kept you distracted long enough to not fuss over it.Â
how many kisses out of a million could one man give? you hoped all of them. you hoped more than a million.Â
the silence is heavy but itâs less awkward now. most of the hard parts were over, and youâd already established there was no reason to be nervous, not with alec. never with alec.
âhere,â he says, his voice still coming out rasped even through his attempts otherwise to quell it. âhips up again fâme⌠yeah, just like that.â alecâs fingers hook into the waistband of your panties, pulling them down until theyâre caught where youâre straddling him. âleft leg up⌠perfect, baby, right one⌠perfect, baby. absolutely perfect.âÂ
the praise makes you feel hot. sure, heâd said things like this before, praising each of your actions when youâd done good at training, or came back from a mission successful. this is different. intimate.Â
"keep 'em up real quick, alright?" he murmurs, shifting beneath you enough to lift his own hips up, hands pulling down his boxers over his thighs. his hand slips, giving way to the nervousness he had buried deep, as it slaps against your bare thigh. "my bad," he chuckles lowly, kicking them off with the foot closest to the bed's edge. his fingers curl around your leg, kneading at the soft flesh. "you've got me all messed up in my head."
"enough to hit me?" you tease, your smile returning again to your lips. "that's cruel, alec. you said you weren't playing dirty."
"m'not," alec insists, his thumb catching your chin and dragging you down into a kiss, and then another.
you laugh on his lips, trying to shake free from his grip. "are too."
he sits up, chasing your mouth when you start to pull away, swallowing your lips in an onslaught of kisses. "i can show you 'playing dirty'." his hands slide down your sides, fingers brushing your ass as they firmly grasp your thighs, flipping the both of you so that your back is against the mattress.
you're strong enough to flip him back. to tackle him onto the mattress, to wrestle like you used to do when you were younger, and things were easier. you don't.
alec settles between your legs, using his hold on your thighs to lift your hips and align your entrance with the cock you have not looked at, nope, it feels too real toâ
your eyes fall anyways when his do, watching him line himself up. all of his nervousness is gone again, like he teeters between it, only ever seeming to get nervous when it comes to addressing you. what you are. what this means.Â
âstill okay?â at your nod, he nods too. âokay, sweet girl. let me justââ his hand comes between the both of you, grasping his cock between his fingers, as he pushes the thick head of it inside of you, his head falling back as your wetness coats it. âjeeeesus.âÂ
âwhat?â you ask breathlessly, shifting to rest on your palms, glancing from his face to where heâs pulling out of you.
alec shakes his head, a grin spreading across his face. ânothing. nothing at all.â he pushes in again, slowly, deliberately, this time keeping his cock inside of your tight walls. âjust thinking about you. always thinking about you.â his free hand goes to your shoulder, pushing you lightly back on the bed. âyou just lay back and relax, alright? get out of that head.âÂ
how were you supposed to get out of your head when now, the thing circling around in it is how he so casually declared that he was alwaysâ
itâs uncomfortable, as he fills you up. like something is wrong, doesnât belong. you were definitely wet enough to take him, but it doesnât stop the feeling of something being off that tingles up your spine.Â
âfuck, youâre so damn tight,â he groans, his voice as rough as gravel. alec rubs soothing circles into your skin with his thumb, before he lets his hand fall down to one of yours, grasping it in his. âsqueeze if you wanna stop.âÂ
even through the discomfort, you didnât want to stop. not only had the gap already been bridged, but⌠you liked it. liked him. more than you ever would have realized on your own. the further he pushes into you, still in that achingly slow pace as he lets your pussy adjust to the feel of him inside of it, the easier that adjustment gets.Â
your fingers play with his, tracing over his knuckles, as your breaths tumble out in soft little pants. everything feels like its at a boiling point, like itâs seconds from spilling over.Â
âyou asked why i wasnât scared,â he says under his breath suddenly, eyes lifting to meet yours through the deep dark of his eyelashes, once heâs to the hilt deep inside of you, his pelvis pressed to yours in a sharing of blistering hot skin. âdo you want to know why?âÂ
he finishes the sentence, and slowly pulls back until his cock rests halfway inside of your throbbing pussy. the movement makes you whimper in your throat, the sound of it rough already. his fingers clamp around yours in reassurance. âiâve thought about this a lot. thatâs why.âÂ
âliar,â you manage to rasp, a breathless moan of laughter punctuating the words, âyâdonât have to make me feel better anymore. iâm not scared.âÂ
âi always,â alec thrusts into you again, quicker this time, already pulling back out, keeping that slow, leisurely pace until heâs absolutely certain youâre alright with the next part of it all, âalways want to make you feel better.âÂ
another thrust in, and something shifts this time. you can feel every inch, and suddenly, a tremor of ecstasy replaces the full discomfort. you gasp, and he surges forward to hover over you properly now, like that one little noise was enough reassurance for him.Â
âalways want to take care of you, always want to make sure youâre happy,â alec continues, soft grunts slipping between his ramblings, âhell, iâve thought about putting a baby in you before. just not⌠in this setting.âÂ
the words shoot straight downwards, making your already aching pussy throb, clenching tightly around him. âiâm not gonna break, alec,â you say, forehead pressed to his. you dig your nails into the back of his hand, not squeezing it so he doesnât stop, but urging him further. âstop acting like youâre gonna snap me in half. iâve pushed you down the stairs before.âÂ
alec laughs, but it works. he pulls out further with each thrust, slams into you harder, burying himself deeply inside of your wet pussy. âyeah, you have.â the sound of skin slapping together starts to echo around the room with the change in his pace, interrupted only by his throaty groans and your soft moans and, god, isnât it awkward that there are guards outside? that this is what theyâre subjected to hear every day, until youâreâ
âyou wantedâ a baby with me,â you say, not as a question, and through the deep haze your mind is slipping into.Â
âwanted to do this. wanted to fuck a baby into you. see you full of me,â he answers, and it must get him going, the image he paints for the both of you, because he speeds up further, drives deeper, and you can feel the head of his cock pushing against your cervix, making you groan aloud into his skin. âonly at night, when it was just me, and i wished you were there, keeping me company. any time else, i could pretend like it was fine.âÂ
you laugh softly, shaking your head, and then heâs laughing too. âfucked up, schoolboy-manticore crush, huh?â his head falls further into the crook of your neck, pressing gentle kisses to your collarbone. âonly this place could get me daydreaming about filling this pussy up with my cum. could get me - wanting to fuck up our whole friendship, just to hear those pretty sounds of yours.âÂ
your face flushes at the filthy words, even as it only stirs your arousal further along. you can feel it in the base of your spine, and suddenly, by their own volition, your hips are pressing against his in tandem, meeting each of his thrusts inside of you. he groans, the sound hot and vibrating on the sensitive skin of your neck.Â
âlook at me, will ya, pretty thing?â he asks, nose nudging your chin up to meet his eyes. blackened pupils swallow up the jade green of his eyes. your lips part as the pleasure builds and builds, each of your noises crescendoing in pace with alecâs relentless thrusts. âgod, nellyââÂ
you tip your head up a little more, enough to catch his mouth in a warm kiss. âitâs okay,â you say against the soft pink of his lips; your turn to comfort him, even if thatâs the last thing he probably needs.Â
âyeah,â he mumbles on your mouth, stealing a fervent amount of quick kisses. it might as well be a million right then, with the way you canât clear your head enough to count.âsâall okay. more than okay. always okay with you.âÂ
âyou donât even knowââ you choke out, interrupted by the desperate moans falling from your lips, free hand coming to hold onto his side and keep him deep, deep, deep. âdonât even know what youâre saying,â you manage to laugh.
âno,â alec laughs too, letting go of your hand and moving it and his other one to hold onto your thighs again. âno i donât. lift this one up for me, yeah?âÂ
you uncurl your bent knee and rest it across the length of his body, and the new angle only makes it that much more intense. âmânot gonna last much longer.âÂ
alec is a nervous laugher. he canât seem to stop while he thrusts into you. your defense mechanism is panic, his is undiluted joy. you hope it never changes about him. âthank fuck.â he turns his head to press a soft kiss to your ankle. ââve been hanging on by a fuckinâ thread.âÂ
âseriously?â you cackle. âalec.âÂ
itâs sweet, really, how even when your entire dynamic flipped on its head, neither of you changed. just like youâd promised. youâre still laughing in the heat of the moment together, still teasing each other in every possible way you could. âtold you âve been thinkinâ about this,â he grumbles in his defense, the little pout on his flushed face only pulling you closer and closer into your releaseâs tight grips, âcanât even blame mââÂ
âoh, fuckââ you canât blame him, because you never gave him the time to pitch his argument fully, cutting him off. each breath you draw in is strained, in time with the pounding heâs giving to your clenching pussy. âoh, fuck, alecââÂ
âhey, language, pretty thing, thereâsââ one last thrust, harder than the others, his hips stuttering their movements as he pushes out a shaky exhale into your shoulder. your head falls back into the mattress, dug into the springs as you buck into him, his cock against your cervix as he spills his cum inside of you. the feel of him twitching inside of you, of the warmth seeping from your fluttering walls and warm down your spread legs, reducing you to a muddled mess of pleasure in his arms. unintelligible words on your tongue, pleads or his name or something, you donât even know, donât even know what you were trying to say.Â
alec brushes his fingers across your forehead, pushing the sweaty hairs off of your skin. âwas gonna tell you to watch your mouth, but iâm pretty sure you just swore me up and down in three different languages at once.âÂ
your limbs feel boneless, but you do manage to swat at his bare chest, heated skin on heated skin. âshut up.âÂ
ânah.â he scoops you into his arms, not yet having pulled out of you, as he cradles you to his chest. âweâre just gettinâ started, arenât we?â
the answer is that one man can give a million kisses, and it doesn't take a lifetime â just a director's order and a dream.

Basic Instinct
Pairing:Â Alec McDowell x F. Reader
Summary: You and Alec adapt to the realities of a human/transgenic relationship, especially during your pregnancy.Â
AN: Well, thanks to these lovely souls @winchestergirl2 @sunbeambarbie, and my patrons over on Patreon, Iâm back with more of the Being Human storyverse! This idea could become a series of loose one-shots as I come up with more ideas around this premise (navigating a relationship with a transgenic that hasâŚshall we say, animalistic tendencies).
Also, this is my first entry for Jacklesverse Bingo '24!~ @jacklesversebingo
Prompt: She whispers in his ear, and he breaks into a smile.
Word Count:Â 2.4K

Alec shrugs the snow flurries off his jacket and dusts off his hair. He works past the shiver that accompanies the icy slush running off his head and shoulders, down to his boots.
He doesnât mind the cold in these Seattle winters, but he hates slush. Itâs messy and muddy, and the gray, placid sky doesnât care about how many sectors he has to hit before his run of Jam Pony deliveries are done.
It doesnât care about how he has to spend a few extra moments dragging the soles of his boots across the faded welcome mat into his apartment, but you do. Youâve got a thing about tracking in mud across the wood floors, even if they are already cracked and squeaky in certain places.
He savors the warmth of the living room when he finally gets inside and closes the door behind him.
âHoney, Iâm home,â he calls out tiredly, but with a note of playfulness. He half-expects you to be napping, as you tend to do in the afternoon at this stage of your pregnancy, especially now that the days have gotten so much shorter. Itâs already pitch black outside, looking more like midnight than half past four.
To his surprise, youâre not only awake, but youâre zipping up the purple winter coat he got youâthe one that actually fits you over your rounded belly. Your head raises, and your face brightens to see him as you wrangle your shopping bag over your shoulder.
âHey,â you greet him, adding a kiss when you approach him at the door. âIâll be back in a bit.â
Alec stops you from moving past him with his hands meeting your waist.
âHey, whoa, whereâs the fire?â he asks, his brows furrowing.
âIâm just going to the market. We need a few things. So, you know, we can eat,â you say with a tease of a smile. âYou probably had a long day, so you can shower up and chill if you want. Iâll be right back.â
Alec makes a sound of refusal and doesnât let go of you when you try to keep heading for the door. You raise a brow at him in confusion.
âItâs dark as hell out there. Cold, wet, and muddy, and not to mention crazy traffic with people trying to get home,â he says. âAnd since I just came from that frigid hellscape, Iâm gonna have to insist that you stay here and warm me up.â
His hands begin to sneak under your jacket and sweater layers, and you squeal and squirm a bit as his cold fingers find your skin, teasing your sides. You bite your lip against a smile and push at his chest, no matter how impossible that may be. Alecâs tall, lithe frame might not look particularly strong, but thereâs no moving him once the transgenic plants his feet.
Just like thereâs often no changing his stubborn mind on certain things, youâve noticed, particularly in situations like thisâŚ
âIâll be right back,â you say. âAn hour, tops. Unless you want rice and canned tuna again, we need food.â
Alec pauses, his lips threatening to frown. But in a moment, a decision is made in his mind, and he grabs your bag off your shoulder.
âFine, letâs go,â he says.
You pause, watching him open the door and hold it open for you. You sigh at him, but you adjust your winter hat and slip on your gloves before you step outside. Alec once again locks the door behind him and joins you on the sidewalk, slipping an arm around your waist to guide you snug against his side.
Itâs both affection and protection. You can tell in the way he âcasuallyâ scopes the street, the neighborhood youâve lived in relative peace for the past six months.
Still, he positions himself between you and the road, where a van zips by. It veers widely to avoid a pothole, looking like it might just take the sidewalk curb along with it. Alec tenses for a moment, until the van finally passes.
âPeople are freakinâ crazy in this city,â he says, shaking his head. âJust because the streetlights are more suggestion than lawââ
âAlec, you drive like a maniac,â you point out. He scoffs at you.
âOh, donât even,â you say, cutting him off from whatever smartassed retort he was about to give. âRemember that time you ran into a chicken coop? You came home wearing bird shit and feathers in your hair.â
âOkay, but who keeps live poultry on the corner of a busy four-way intersection?â he grouses. âMake it make sense.â
Although you roll your eyes, itâs hard not to smile at your boyfriendâs antics. You two walk together amiably down to the market while he tells you about his day of deliveries. It weirdly makes you a little jealous. You stopped working after the whole Ames White debacle, when you were kidnapped. (You're still trying to block that traumatic episode out of your memory.)Â
First, it was just a challenge to figure out where you and Alec were going to live. Logan is generous to a fault, but you couldnât take up room in his apartment forever. He did make good on his promise to scope out the safest apartment you two could afford: a walkup on the moderately less skeevy side of town.
Alec hasnât outright tried to ban you from working, but you two agreed that it would be better for you not to return to Jam Pony, both for logistical and safety reasons. Ames White is dead, but the rest of his radical organizationâa damn breeding cultâis too well connected for Alec to want to take any chances. Theyâd likely known where you worked and followed you when you went to Alecâs old apartment that day.
All that aside, however, itâs a simple fact that your poor bladder wonât last five minutes on a bike. Itâs really all you can do to walk to the market. The third trimester hasnât exactly been easy on your body, but Alec hovers close behind you, making sure you choose whatever meat and vegetables you want, regardless of the price.
âHey, theyâve got turkey. Thatâs new,â he says, grabbing a large bird off the row of hanging poultry. The smell of its rawness triggers a bubble of nausea, making you turn your face away and cover your nose and mouth with a sound of disgust.
Alec quickly holds it away from you, but he has the guy running the kiosk bag it up for him. You stop him with a hand on his arm.
âThatâs too expensive,â you whisper to him in warning, your eyes widening. Alec gives you an easy smile.
âSweetheart, if thereâs one thing you and the baby need right now, itâs protein,â he reasons. âI was planning on picking up some extra shifts this week anyway.â
He gives the man the money without a second thought. You donât know whether to frown, or shed pitiful tears when he does stuff like that. Youâre still not altogether used to it, having someone who takes care of you for a change. Youâve spent most of your life doing that part yourself.
When Alec turns back around, grinning all proud as a peacock at the good deal he got and the haul he has slung in the bag over his shoulder, his expression falls at seeing the tears in your eyes.
âWhatâs the matter?â he asks, touching your arm. You shake your head with a smile.
âNothing,â you sniff and wipe at your face. âGoddamn hormones.â
Alec smirks, but before he can tease you, a broad frame knocks into you from behind. It wouldâve sent you to the ground hard if Alecâs reflexes hadnât been quicker. His arms come around you, firm but gentle as he rights you. He glances behind him and bristles with anger, his spine stiff and his body taut. You rarely see that kind of sharpness in his eyes.
Theyâre gentler when they turn to you.Â
âYou okay?â he asks with furrowed brows of concern. You have to catch a winded breath, but you nod, meeting his eyes. He doesnât let go of you until you get your balance back.
Then, his gaze flicks up to the man who bowled you over. He stands at the same kiosk Alec got the turkey from. Meathead is trying to buy the last one.
âAlec,â you warn.
âIâll just be a second,â he says. You reach for his arm and try to tell him that youâre fine, but itâs like a switch has been flipped inside him, narrowing his gaze. He slips out of your grasp and leaves you with the bag of groceries.
âDamn it,â you mutter.
Not even a minute later, Alec swings a quick, exacting fist. You wince as the larger man nearly breaks his jaw on the pavement.
You canât help but giggle and try to squirm away as he noses along your throat. It tickles. His arms are a loose, comfortable embrace in the familiar peace of your bed. Youâre swathed by pillows and warm blankets while Alec is tucked along your side. His long legs bend at a slight angle with his knees brushing your thigh.
âWould you stop already?â you say, swatting his thigh. You feel his smirk against your skin.
âHowâre my girls doing?â he asks. You chuckle. He was a bit stunned at first to find out that youâre having a girl. You thought he mightâve been hoping for a boy, easier for him to connect with someday. But the way he dotes on you sometimes, now, you can already tell heâs going to spoil your daughter rotten.
âWeâre good,â you reply.
He sighs and settles in comfortably against you. This is your favorite thing, and you think itâs his too. After a long day, itâs your time to just rest and be with each other, either watching TV or catching up about the day. Itâs everything and nothing at all.
Eventually, his voice interrupts the quiet again.
âYou smell different, you know.â
You quirk a brow at that one. âWhat do you mean?â
When he shakes his head, you feel the tickle of his hair under your ear.
âHmm, I dunno. Earthy, I guess,â he says. âPregnant.â
You have to laugh. âI smell pregnant? Not sure if thatâs a compliment.â
âOh, it is,â he nods. His lips press a line of tantalizing kisses down your throat and collarbone. You smile and curl up a hand to sink your fingers into his hair, gently massaging his head.
Itâs taken you some time to figure out exactly what a transgenic is, exactly, and youâve come to realize that all of them are spliced with a little something special. Each and every one of them, from Alec and Max, to Joshua and the others who live in Terminal Cityâwhether they look human or not, theyâre unique in some way. It gives them certainâŚtraits. Ones that betray the animal DNA they were partially created with.
As the events of this afternoon replay in your mind, your smile begins to slip.
âThat was too much today, at the market,â you tell him, now that heâs calm. âWhat happened there?â
Alec stills.
âNothing, justâŚyou didnât hear him. The guy was a smartass,â he says.
âWhat, couldnât handle a taste of your own medicine?â you quip, but you squeeze his arm gently. It rests above the swell of your belly. âNo, it was more than that.â
His jaw clenches; a telltale sign that he knows exactly what youâre talking about, even if he doesnât want to answer you. You turn your head and scooch back a little so you can see his face better. His playfulness is long gone, but he meets your gaze.
âI thinkâŚâ you whisper in his ear, tapping his arm with a finger, âthat you have a bit of wolf in your cocktail. Not as much as Joshua, obviously, but still.â
Alec blinks in surprise, and he breaks into a smile.
âOh, really? What gives you that idea?â he asks.
âDo you want the list chronologically or alphabetically?â you say. Alec rolls his eyes, but you level him with a wry look. âSense of smell. Excessive protectivenessââ
âExcessive?â Alec raises a brow.
âNot to mention the biting, Count Dracula,â you finish, gesturing with a smile at the back of your neck. Thereâs a mark there that he refuses to let fade away.
Now, he becomes sheepish. His plush lips form a bit of a pout.
âI thought you liked that,â he says, his eyes glinting with mischief. You reach out a hand to cup his cheek.
âOh, itâs hot as hell,â you tease back. You draw him in, guiding his face to yours for a slow kiss, simmering with heat.
âBut itâsâŚpossessive,â you say, after you break from him. Your words are a mere whisper in the small space between your faces. âLike youâre claiming me.â
The green in Alecâs eyes have darkened a touch. They roam your face.
âWell, youâre mine, arenât you?â he asks. But his tone is deceptive. Itâs anything but a question.
Your lips curve into a smile. You thumb at his chin.
âYeah,â you reply.
Alecâs hand slides up your neck to cup your cheek, guiding you to him this time as he claims you in a more devouring kiss. He steals your breath, over and over, plying you with his tongue and with the weight of his body wrapping around you. He moves you gently onto your side and swipes your hair out of the way, so he can kiss his way down your neck.
He stops for a moment at that mark, where he grazes over the sensitive flesh with a hint of teeth. You shudder. Hot tingles run down your spine, pluming warmth and wetness between your legs.
âAlec,â you breathe, almost on a gasp. You feel him already hard and ready, pressed against you.
âI got you, sweetheart.â
His voice is smooth in your ear, but youâve known him long enough to hear his need. It echoes your own. You take his hand and begin to lead him where you want him, all while he buries his face into your neck and inhales your sweet, familiar scent.
âAlways,â he says.
AN:Â Short and sweet, but I had fun revisiting the Being Human world. I'd love to dip back in again someday! Until then, I hope you enjoy! đ

"I hate you." "You have a weird way of showing that." - Alec McDowell Prompt Response
Summary: You're looking for a way to set yourself up and blend in after breaking out of Manticore. Having heard the rumors, you seek out Max for help. In doing so, you come across someone you had never thought you'd see again.
Pairing: Alec McDowell x Female!Reader; Alec McDowell x Female!Transgenic Reader
A/N: Prompt from @creativepromptsforwriting (#941). I have been in love with the world of Dark Angel and Alec ever since the show aired. To me, it's completely fascinating, and I really wish it had continued. (I was a big Malec fan back then btw; Lomax just wasn't my thing) There's so much to explore, especially with Max herself and how the transgenic community was going to move forward now that the public was aware of them. And of course, Joshua, OC, and Alec. Great stuff. Originally, I wasn't sure what scenario would best suit Alec based on this prompt line but I knew it would definitely be something that would apply to him. As far as It's A Wonderful Life, I was listening to the Christmas radio show they aired back in the 40's as I was outlining this one and the idea sort of came to life on its own. Hope this one's alright.
This is meant to take place mid-s2 and I did use events from the Berrisford Agenda episode (2x11) as inspiration for the beginning. đ
Thanks to my beta @rieleatiel for her services. You rock, girl!

You made your way into the bike messenger shop, glancing around despite the busy, distracting din. Rumor had it that a transgenic named Max had a sweet hookup here, something a fellow transgenic like yourself could use, being on the run and all. You could get a job, make money, and more importantly: blend in; not to mention it would teach you the layout of the city, the ins and outs, and provide you with legal documentation to let you past checkpoints in case Manticore ever came looking.Â
So far, you hadnât spotted the dark brunette you had been told about, and you didnât sense any of your kind here. While a few people either walked past you, giving you a once-over as they did or stood there staring, all of them appeared to be human. Everyone else was milling to and fro, and you wondered if perhaps youâd been given wrong information. It had happened before so you were used to it, but this one you had really been hoping would turn out to be true. You could use a lucky break.
A man was barking out orders to a group of messengers before they dispersed, and his eye landed on you once they did. âYou need something, Missy-Miss?â
You assumed the crankpot was the boss so you carefully approached him. âUh, yeah, I was looking forââ
You were interrupted by yells coming from your far left. Your head snapped in the direction of the sounds and your eyes widened at what you saw.
There was the transgenic X5-494 backed up against the lockers, holding his hands out in a âwhoaâ manner and giving the women in front of him his most charming grin; by the looks of their faces, it wasnât working. âLadies, ladies. No need to fight.â
âYou didnât tell me you were already seeing Lena when you asked me out!â One woman seethed.
âHe asked you out?â Another woman, who you assumed was Lena, demanded. âI bet it happened right after we slept together, didnât it?â
âHe slept with you?â A third woman blanched.
âTell me you haven't been making the rounds through the entire company,â another woman scoffed in disgust.
You shook your head, watching the show. Typical 494. Even out here he was still getting himself into trouble. By the sounds of it, he more than deserved the wrath of the women he was currently faced with, but you were still taken aback by his sudden appearance. Just when you thought youâd never see him againâŚ
Before you knew it, the older man you had been talking to made his way over. âAlright, break it up! Break it up!â He forced his way next to 494 and glared at the ladies. âShouldnât you be working? You want your paychecks? Packages need to be delivered on time. Get going.â
The women grumbled and began to disperse, glaring in both menâs direction. âYou just wait until later, Alec! This isnât over!â 494 gave them all a sheepish smile while the other man scowled.Â
âOkay, okay! Youâve got deliveries to make. Packages donât deliver themselves so letâs go, keep it moving!âÂ
By the time they had all left, 494âs smile dropped and he seemed to deflate, gratefully clapping the manâs shoulder. âThanks. I think they were about to eat me alive,â he laughed.
âNot on my watch,â the other man promised. âHowâre you feeling, champ? You okay?â
âYeah, no, Iâm good. Just, you knowâŚâ He gestured to where the women had disappeared and bugged his eyes before letting out a nervous chuckle.
âYou shouldâve let them take a swing at him,â a brunette woman suddenly threw at them as she approached her locker, which was near the two men. âItâs not like he didnât deserve it.â
494 let out a huff. âThanks, Max,â he mumbled.
That name caught your attentionâso this was Max. It had surprised you to see 494 here of all places, but it made sense considering what X5-452 had set up here.
âDonât be like that, Missy-Miss,â the older man warned the woman. âThereâs no reason to have that kind of attitude.â
Max shook her head and discreetly rolled her eyes, zipping up her backpack. âSo what have you got for me today, Normal?â
Normal held out two packages for her to take. âThey need these by noon, not one second later.â
Max snatched the packages and nodded. 494 stepped closer to her. âIâll come with you,â he insisted, still seeing some of the dirty looks he was receiving from girls coming to and fro.Â
She made a face at him which clearly said that wasnât going to happen, and before she could voice that, Normal cleared his throat. âNot a bad idea. You could show him the ropes on that side of town and keep him from the estrogen mob looking to burn him at the stake. Heâs got that raw animal charisma working and itâs causing trouble.â This time you made your own face of disgust. And this guyâs name was Normal? Far from it.
âWhatever,â Max snapped and shoved a package into 494âs chest, hard. She turned and was about to leave when you stepped forward.
âMax?â You called.
Her eyes snapped towards you as did 494âs and Normalâs. âYeah?â She asked, seeming unsure.Â
You knew she was sensing who you really were just like you could sense her and 494 across the way, even if you hadnât just been watching them. You ignored 494âs eyes widening at the sight of you and the sudden tension in his body, making your way closer. âI was wondering if we could have a word.â
Maxâs brows furrowed and Normal glanced between you, holding up a finger. âNo visitors at work, Miss. You know the rule: packages need to be there by noon. Make it quick.â He turned and walked away, completely uninterested in whatever conversation you two were about to have.
Max stepped over to you, studying you intently. âYou know my name, but I donât know yours. What do you want?â
494 was standing right next to her, his eyes never leaving you. The surprise was still evident in his expression along with something else you couldnât quite put a name to.
You glanced around, making sure no one was paying attention to you, before turning and lifting your ponytail from your neck, letting her see the barcode tattoo you had. After a moment, you spun on your heel to find her appearing a little more receptive to what you had to say. âSo, you got somewhere we can talk?â
She nodded and glanced over at 494 before inclining her head in a direction she expected you to follow her in. You obliged, your eyes briefly flickering to 494âs, before he followed both of you.
Once you were outside in a semi-private spot, Max turned to you, her arms crossed. âSo, who are you really?â
âX5-498,â you answered.Â
Max glanced over at 494 before addressing you once again. âHow long have you been on the run?â
âSince you destroyed the base and helped 494 escape.â You nodded in his direction. Yeah, maybe you were still a little bitter about that. 494 looked like a deer caught in headlights.
âI didnât help him do anything,â Max insisted, her nose scrunching up in what appeared to be repulsion at the very idea.Â
494 ignored her and trained his gaze on you. âI thought you were dead.â
You smirked over at him and crossed your arms. âSorry to disappoint.â You noticed his jaw tighten and his eyes narrow at the jab.
âYou two know each other?â Max was looking between you but neither of you looked away from the other.Â
âShe was my breeding partner,â 494 informed her.Â
Maxâs eyes widened and turned on you. âWait, what?â
âYeah,â you agreed. âHe wouldnât have been my first choice, either.â
He snorted and the amused smirk you were more than familiar with began to appear on his face, yet he didnât say a word.Â
âOh-kay. Thatâs not super weird or anything.â She turned to 494. âYou had more than one breeding partner? Were you Manticoreâs stud horse or something?â She looked grossed out at the thought.
494âs eyes briefly flickered over to her. â498 and I were paired off long before you got there.â
âBut then, if you were already paired off, why were you paired off with me, too?â Your gaze snapped to Max who looked genuinely confused for a moment before realization hit her. âOh, right. It was all part of your big plan to get me to trust you so I could accidentally kill Logan. Got it.â
494 shrugged unapologetically. âPretty much.â He turned back to you. âRenfro gave me the mission and told me if I didnât succeed, then thatâd be it for me. I was already on thin ice with them. So, she assigned me to you, Max, and I did what I had to do.â
âAnd he left me to die,â you supplied, gracing her with your smirk.Â
His jaw dropped before he closed his mouth and pressed his lips into a thin line. âI didnât leave you there to die,â he protested.Â
âLeaving me there to burn to death constitutes as leaving me to die,â you countered. He glared at you but you ignored it. You noticed Maxâs eyes constantly moving between the two of you and you decided youâd get to the point of why you were here. â452, Iâm here because word on the street is that you have a way of helping fellow transgenics like yourself.â You motioned towards 494. âI was hoping you might be able to help me as well.â
She looked taken aback. âI donât have anything set up like that. As a matter of fact, Alec here only got the job because of Normalâs weird worship of him.â 494 gave her a smug smile which made her roll her eyes. âBut as far as other transgenics go, I donât really have anything in place to help like youâre thinking. Sorry.â
You nodded, figuring as much. You thought it had been unlikely but you had hoped anyway. All you could do now was remain on the run until you could find a place where you could seamlessly blend in. âThank you for your time.â
âJust hold up a sec,â 494 entreated you, but you ignored him.
You turned to leave when Maxâs voice stopped you. âWait.â You glanced back and found her watching you, compassion twinkling in her eyes. âMaybe thereâs something we can do.â She quickly glanced at 494 who was giving her a look. Max rolled her eyes at him but lifted her chin when addressing you. âI wouldnât put you with this one because it sounds like youâve been punished enough already.â
494 shot her a glare to which she only smirked. You couldnât help but smile yourself; perhaps you would like this 452 after all.Â
âBut I think I have an idea of where you can stay. Itâs temporary and youâd have a roommate, but we can see about getting you a job and getting you set up properly. Logan can help, too, with papers. If youâre serious and you plan to stay, that is.â
494 watched you intently. You thought it over for a moment. This proposal was better than anything you had going for you right now. Hell, you would have even stuck yourself with 494 again if it meant youâd have a place to sleep and something to eat, safe from Manticore for a while. You gave Max a nod. âThank you.â To your surprise, 494 seemed to relax a bit at your response.
She smiled and turned, indicating you should follow. âYouâll be with Joshua for the time being. Heâs pretty easy to get along with,â she assured you, her tone softening a bit. You could tell she was fond of the guy she was mentioning.
âJoshua?â You questioned, looking from her to 494.
494 stayed in step with you as you all made your way out onto the street. He shot you a smile as Max retrieved her bike. âYou like dogs?â
Joshua did indeed turn out to be a decent roommate. He was kind and thoughtful and actually a little funny. Truthfully, you hadnât been prepared to find a dogman as your new temporary roommate, but once you found out about his history, you found yourself feeling compassion for his situation. You were glad he had managed to escape the destruction of the base that night.Â
Max kept her word and set you up with a job as a bike messenger at Jam Pony (apparently a couple of the girls 494 had been involved with decided to up and quit for some strange reason), which gave you access to all of the legal documentation youâd need to get past certain checkpoints in the city. Sheâd introduced you to her friends Original Cyndi and Sketchy, who would also turn out to be your coworkers. Normal viewed you as another hooligan he was forced to pay for standing around and not doing your job just like the rest, though despite his warped assertions, you actually did get your work done. You ended up going on runs with 494 and Max to get to know the ins and outs of the job. Outside of work, you kept your distance unless your help was needed. Max and OC had invited you to Crash a couple of times, but you bowed out, especially when Sketch seemed a little too invested in your joining them. You also met Logan and Asha, neither of whom you cared for very much; still, they were important to your fellow transgenics and Logan was helping you, so you kept your thoughts to yourself. All in all, you were settling into life in Seattle and beginning to blend in. And you avoided 494 like the Plague despite his couple of attempts to approach you and strike up a conversation, so everything was going pretty swell.Â
You had even found a new place you liked to escape to every now and then. You knew the Space Needle was also Maxâs favorite spotâshe had told you as muchâbut after a long day, you liked to get to the highest point and look out over the city you now were beginning to call home.Â
It was one such peaceful night when 494 found you.
âThought Iâd find you here.â He carefully lowered himself down next to you.
You didnât respond and instead focused on the feel of the cool breeze gently blowing through your hair.
âIâm glad you made it out,â he admitted.
You shot him a look before returning your attention to the city.Â
âI am.â He rested his forearms on his knees and looked out towards the city skyline. âI know what we had wasnât of our making, but it wasnât all horrible, was it?â
You let his question hang in the air. No, it hadnât been all horrible, but it was still a messed up situation you both had been thrust into. Based on what youâd learned about his sessions with Max, copulation hadnât needed to happen due to the background plan. You and 494 werenât so lucky after a while, just like every other pair of breeding partners in the facility. By the time Max was recaptured and brought to the base, Renfro and company were already starting to side-eye the two of you and wanted to know how you hadnât gotten pregnant yet. Almost every other pairing had been successful or reassigned if they werenât; you were arousing too much suspicion by your constant failure to report an impregnation despite your successful copulations. The truth was that you and 494 did what you could to prevent it from happening. You had no desire to add to the ranks of Manticore transgenics and neither did he, something you both had been on the same page about since the first night youâd been thrown into a cell together.
You hadnât fooled yourselves. This wasnât about love or any attraction you had for one another, nor was it even a fun roll in the sheets; you both would not have chosen each other if youâd had a say in any of it. This was all about science and genetics, and it was purely clinical. That didnât mean that there werenât a few moments here and there that you snatched for yourselves: a laugh here, a tender moment there, a camaraderie forged between you in flipping off the organization that had created you and controlled you since your first breaths. So no, it wasnât all horrible.
Which is why you didnât protest or move away when you felt him subtly shift a little closer to you. You nearly smiled at the action; 494 had always sought a connection between you, something that superseded the physical. You couldnât count the amount of times after your sessions that you had both held onto each other: you still remembered how he would wrap his arms around you and pull you close, letting out a content sigh as you ran your fingers through his sweaty hair, scratching at his scalp in the way you knew he liked. And he would make sure every inch of him was still touching you on the uncomfortable cot suspended from the wall, before the guards were due to come back and retrieve him. How he would chatter away about different subjects, doing his best to engage you.
âI went back for you,â he murmured.
Surprise ran through you as you turned wide eyes on him.Â
âOnce they revealed the baseâs location and I was able to get free, I went back for you.â He stared at you, swallowing compulsively. âBut by the time I got there, it was too late. I thought you were gone.â
You could see the truth of what he was saying in his green eyes, but you refused to give in that easily. You huffed out a snort and turned back to the view. âMore like you were hoping.â
Out of the corner of your eye, you could see him shaking his head. âI never wanted you gone.â
You ignored him and continued your ritual of observing the city, allowing silence to fall between you. Only when he slowly took your hand into his did you turn a glare on him and finally speak:Â âI hate you, you realize that, right?â
âYou have a weird way of showing that.â He nodded his head towards your intertwined fingers.Â
You rolled your eyes but you didnât pull away. âDonât you have a harem to get back to? Or whatâs her nameâŚAsha? Now that youâre free to choose who you want to copulate with. You didnât seem to have any issue finding willing partners before I showed up.â
This time, he was the one who snorted. âJust passing time.â
You finally did pull away, grimacing. âEw.â
He let out a nervous-sounding laugh. âI just meant itâs all been casual. Nothing serious.â
You side-eyed him. âGood luck with that.â You got to your feet and were about to leave when he grabbed your hand to stop you, forcing you to look down at him.
âY/N,â he murmured, using the name Max had picked out for you. It wasnât your favorite, but you needed something to go on the paperwork for Jam Pony and the papers Logan was acquiring for you, so you figured it would do. Perhaps youâd even grow into it and it could be a decent identity for you.
â494?â
He shot you a glare. âAlec.â
Right. Max had named him, too. That was something heâd mentioned on one of the runs you, he, and Max had gone on. You had smirked at Maxâs explanation of that choice while 494 had rolled his eyes.
âOkay then. Alec?â It felt weird to call him that yet at the same timeâŚit felt like a good fit.
His thumb tenderly stroked against your skin and he watched you. âJust wanted to see how it sounded. Using our names instead.â
You nodded. You could understand that. All of this was new andâŚfragile in a way. Any moment you could be found, you could either be killed or worse â brought back to another base. However, from what youâd heard, the former was more likely to happen these days. Max had encouraged you to start thinking about what you wanted out of life, and so far, freedom was certainly at the top of your list. You might be free right now, but you werenât really free, not with your captors still out there who viewed you as their property, to apprehend or destroy at will. You had a feeling that Alec knew that just as well as you did, no matter the optimistic picture Max tried to paint for Joshua or any other transgenics she might come across.
He tugged on your hand to urge you to sit back down next to him. You resisted for a moment but then decided to oblige. What did a few minutes more matter in the scheme of things? He snuck an arm around your shoulders and pulled you closer. Had it been anyone else, that arm would have been ripped from its socket by now.Â
Alec gave you a small smile and leaned down to press a kiss to your hair, flooding you with memories of every time heâd done just that. Other memories made appearances, too: his sharing with you about his side hustle of trading things with guards for certain comforts, something he actually used on your behalf a few times; his laugh and kiss to your head when both of you had gotten a little too much into one copulating session, almost making the two of you forget to take your usual precautions; his promise of getting you both out of there together if you could hold out just a little longer; his expression when he told you that he thought Renfro had a mission for him that would keep him out of your barracks for the next few nights but that heâd do his best to see it through quickly and return; the last time youâd seen him when heâd exchanged a look with you across the yard before you and your unit were led away for more drills and testing, you thinking back to the worry youâd seen in his expression and since you didnât know the cause, it created your own set of worries â 494 never let it show if he was ever worried or scared.Â
You werenât sure how to feel about any of this. Yes, you and Alec had history but it had been forced upon you. Although you had forged some sort of connection during it all, it didn't mean that either of you were looking to continue that or see where it went on the outsideâespecially now that you were able to choose for yourselves. Still, that connection hadnât simply ceased to exist just because you wished it would⌠Especially not when he was trying his damndest to restore some piece of it, right here and right now.
He lowered his head to meet your eyes and you could feel something familiar inside your chest squeezing a little bit. You told yourself that it had to be heartburn from the chicken stew youâd eaten for dinner earlier, and not anything to do with him at all. âIâve missed this,â he quietly admitted. âJust talking and being together. Didnât you?â
You gave him a look of disbelief mixed with amusement. âI donât really think we did all that much talking as I remember it.â
That cocky smirk of his was back. âTrue.âÂ
You rolled your eyes and he laughed. You enjoyed the familiar sound that caused more memories to wash over you. You would never admit it but the bond youâd shared had actually been the only good thing to sustain you when you were running after the explosion. Youâd hoped that wherever he was, he had gotten away and was safe. You knew he hadnât been in his barracks; youâd checked amidst the chaos.Â
Thinking back to that night, you rested your head back against his shoulder and stared out into the night. His lips tipped up in a small smile and he laid his head up against yours, following your gaze. You both stayed like that for the next hour until he murmured to you, âCome back with me?â
You turned to frown up at him. Was he for real? âReally?â
âNo, not that, I just meantâŚâ He ran his free hand over his hair. âI didnât think Iâd see you again and now youâre here. I didnât really know how to ask you before without it sounding like that. But I want to show you my place.â He gave you a bit of a proud smile.
You considered it. It would be interesting to see what kind of setup he had going for himself. That had been something you had talked about back in your bunk at the base as he held you to him, his hands roaming your bare back. âYou sure Alecâs groupies wonât mind?â
Alec smirked and shook his head. âI donât have any roommates or regular visitors if thatâs what youâre asking.â
You smirked right back and leaned in, making his eyes drop to your lips. âI wasnât,â you whispered before dropping his hand and getting to your feet.Â
He got up as well, grinning over at you, that familiar fire lighting those sharp green eyes. âJust think: no guards to bribe, no need to keep it down, no time limit, no metal cot we both have to try to fit onâŚâ
You snorted. âSo you really are asking me to go back with you for that reason.â
âNo, I really do want to show you the sweet setup I have.â His smile then turned wicked. âBut if that were to happen, I wouldnât exactly be against it.â
âUh-huh.â You rolled your eyes and crossed your arms, looking away from him. You did your best to hide your own smile when he wrapped his arms around you from behind, resting his lips near your ear.
âSo what do you say? Let me show you my apartment. I got a couch, a bed, a tubâŚâ Â
âOoh, a tub?â You pretended to be impressed though you werenât pretending too much. If a tub was considered a luxury before the world went to hell, then it was an even rarer commodity now.Â
âYep,â he huskily whispered as he brushed a kiss to your ear lobe. âAll the hot water and soap you could want.â He trailed his lips down your neck, making your eyes shut halfway. âAnd Iâve got glasses, plates, a coffee table⌠I even have a stereo.â
You dug your teeth into your bottom lip when he found that spot on your neck that he knew you loved. âA stereo?â
âFor music,â he explained, pressing a kiss to your jawline. âAnd I even managed to score some whiskey from years back, pre-pulse. Youâll love it,â he promised before nuzzling your cheek. âCome home with me.â  Â
You stared out over the horizon, unsure if you should give in to what he was tempting you with. Before, at Manticore, the sex had been clinical and while there was a connection between you, given the circumstances, it made sense to stick together like glue. But now⌠âI donât know if I should. Weâre out now and everythingâs changed.â
He spun you in his arms, his brows furrowed as he cupped your face with his hands. âNot for me. I meant what I said to you in there, we were gonna get out together, find some place to blend in, and make it work.â
âBut we didnât get out together,â you whispered, gently removing his hands from you before stepping around him towards the door.Â
He grabbed your hand. âY/N.â You glanced back at his earnest expression. âI did come back for you. When everything exploded and I didnât hear or see any trace of you, I thoughtââ
âI know. I went to look for you, too, once I managed to get out of my barracks.â His eyes widened slightly in surprise. âThat guard, Hayes, he let me out. He said something about a deal you had in place with him if things went wrong while you were away on your mission.â You dropped your gaze. âIt mustâve really cost you, so⌠Thanks for that.â You squeezed his hand before letting it go and making your way inside the abandoned building.  Â
You didnât look back; there was no point. When you thought back to that night, you remembered Hayes sneering at you as he opened your cell door, spitting something about telling 494 that he owed him something better than cigars and the usual contraband this time. You didnât bother thanking the man who treated you and every other transgenic on the base as nothing more than freak science experiments that were less than human, and you booked it towards the male barracks, fighting your way through when you needed to. You would never forget the relief you felt finding the specific bunk you were looking for empty, that was then followed by the feeling of betrayal, which quickly shifted into acceptance. You hoped he was alive out there somewhere, whether he had made it out before you got there or he had already been out in the world on his mission. You had chalked up your time together as a weird yet not so bad interaction and kept running. Youâd even seen Hayesâ dead body on your way out, his throat torn apart, almost as if that too was closing the book on this messed up chapter of your life.
And thatâs what youâd done: closed that chapter of your life and attempted to move on, to do what you could to figure out your own life. You never expected to see 494 again, let alone find him living his life, a harem of women around him. It had stuck a finger into that particular wound for a moment before the blanket acceptance was back in place. Your relationship was exactly as youâd thought it had been for both of you: something that had been forced upon you by your creators and you both had tried to make something good out of it (just not the child Manticore had wanted). And now, it was over. You both were on the outside and it was time for you both to go your separate ways, figuratively if not literally. Heâd done right by you in that last moment and youâd escaped, gotten free, and lived. What more could you ask for?
You were just about to scale down to the next level when his hand landed on your shoulder, making you look back at him.
âY/N, come back with me to my place. I want to show you something.â
You gave him a look. â494ââ
âAlec,â he corrected. âIâm not talking about sex, though if you wanted that at some point, like I said, Iâm more than willing.â He lifted his hand to cup your cheek and he stared into your eyes, willing you to agree. âI really want to show you something.âÂ
His thumb tenderly ran along your bottom lip in a familiar gesture that had always preceded a kiss before he left you for the night. A part of you hoped he would repeat the action but when he didnât, you were more relieved than anything. Your body yearned for hisâthe familiarity, the comfortâbut you still didnât think you should fall back into old habitsâit could only end badly, whether he ended up getting bored or one of you (or both) were found by your enemies. You felt incredibly torn. Truthfully, you werenât quite sure what you wanted when it came to him.Â
âPlease,â he added. âCome over.â
He looked so determined, so earnest, that you found yourself slowly nodding in agreement.Â
His handsome face lit up with a bright smile. âI promise, youâre really gonna like it.â He urged you to follow him, scaling to the next level down with you right behind him. You hoped he was right, and you also hoped you would finally get some sort of answer for yourself on whether to explore this new great unknown with him with the former Emerald City as the backdrop in contrast to your cramped cell or to close the book on him for good.
You had to admit, Alec had a nice apartment. It was bigger than youâd imagined and he had told you the truth: he had glasses, plates, a coffee table, a couch, a bed, a tub, the so-called stereo (which he turned on for a minute to show you how it worked), and the whiskey heâd promised. As you drank from your glass, marveling at the taste, you glanced around, nodding.
âNice,â you complimented.
âThanks.â He took your hand and led you to a corner of the living room where a box sat tall on some sort of stand. He released you to go over and stand next to it, turning to beam over at you. âWhat do you think?â
Your eyes roved over the box with a glass front, confused. âItâsâŚgreat?â
He gave you a look as if you should know what it was before smiling wide again. âItâs a TV,â he crowed.Â
Your brows furrowed in confusion. âTV?â
âYeah, you know, to watch movies and TV shows, that kind of thing.âÂ
You peered at it, wondering just how it worked. Youâd heard of movies of course, but youâd never seen one. Did the images just appear on the glass when you turned it on? Was there something that needed to be selected or perhaps inserted somewhere?
He proudly laid a hand on top of it. âI managed to get ahold of it after one of my customers Iâve been selling synthetics to heard about some old lady dying nearby who had one. I headed right over to her place and got this beauty.â He smiled down at it.Â
âYouâve been selling synthetics?â Of course he was still hustling, even out here. In Manticore, it had been a necessity; out here, if it helped him get nice digs like this and set him up, you had to give him credit for keeping it going and getting creative.
âAmong other things. Oh, and look.â He gestured down to another smaller box sitting in front of it. âI was also able to get a VCR. It took me a few months to get a lead on one of these, but I got it.â He chuckled and turned a wide smile on you.Â
You returned the smile, still unsure of what a VCR was.
âAnd the best part,â He took your glass from you and placed it on top of the TV before he grabbed something from behind it and shoved it into your hands. You looked down at the rectangular object and spied a familiar image you had only seen once before, when you were on the run from Manticore the first time. Your eyes widened; something you had told Alec about one night after copulating a few times and he was falling asleep, him tiredly rubbing your shoulder as you laid your head on his chest, one of the nights heâd bought more time for you both⌠The sight made the corners of your eyes sting, yet you forced yourself to keep the tears at bay. He had heard you that night even while nodding off and heâdâ heâd managed to get his hands on it. âItâs that movie you told me about,â he began. âItâsââ
â--A Wonderful Life,â you finished in an awed whisper. You reverently traced the picture youâd seen a hundred times before Manticore caught you. You ignored the rips and stains surrounding the rim of the image and focused on the man whoâd caught your interest in the first place. He looked happy, staring down at his wife, the two of them surrounded by their children, one hoisted up behind him and holding onto him for dear life. They all looked happy, which was something youâd never had or known. Youâd never had a father, never knew your mother, and youâd never had a family, not like the one portrayed in the picture. Sure, you had dozens of brothers and sisters, but you werenât a family. Manticore would punish you if any of you had even uttered the word. You were soldiers in training and that was it.
Still, this image piqued your interest and many nights, you found that you couldnât stop staring at it. It was in an old theater, a place youâd managed to find while running the first timeâthe same place you took shelter in and eventually turned it into your own setup. There were other people throughout the theater whoâd had the same idea, but they pretty much left you alone once youâd fought off the biggest guy in the group who had stupidly tried to take your food from you. Once youâd seen that poster, it created a yearning in you for something you had never known, something you never imagined wanting. You didnât need parents and you didnât need siblings, but you did crave family⌠Something that became more and more apparent the more you studied the image, imagining what that life would be like.Â
Which is why it was so cruel when Manticore recaptured you and immediately thrust you into its breeding program. Not only had they taken your life from you since conception, viewed you as their property that they were determined to see some sort of return of their investment onânow they wanted to take whatever life you could create from you and control it, too. You werenât going to let that happen. As a matter of fact, youâd fought 494 off the first night they sent him into your cell. It had taken him by surprise because heâd thought you both were on the same page: you had orders. But heâd quickly learned that youâd rather die than follow those particular ones. Heâd maintained his distance until a guard came to retrieve him, and as heâd glanced back at you one last time as he stepped across the threshold, you knew then that you were marked for death. A soldier refusing to obey and follow orders was no good to the organization and more importantly, of no use. Thus, it took you by surprise the next day when 494 confirmed the success of your copulation the previous night to your superiors which led to him being brought back to your cell later that night to continue.
From there, even though it took a little bit, youâd both talked and began getting to know one another. Youâd learned that he didnât want to spawn any kids for Manticore anymore than you did. Eventually, a bond began to form between you and of course, so did an attraction. The night you got hit with your first heat since being recapturedâthanks to a splash of feline DNA in your system, something youâd always been able to manage on the outside beforeâthings had changed between you, and 494 no longer had to lie when reporting that copulation had been successful. Nonetheless, the entire time youâd been back in Manticoreâs hands, youâd never forgotten about that picture and what you truly wanted: your freedom, a life, and eventually, familyâhappiness. You wanted to be happy just like the people in the poster.
And now here you were: on the outside, free for the moment, attempting to build a life, and this picture had somehow made its way back to you, right into your very hands, real enough to literally touch. âHow did you get it?â
âOne of Maxâs fences gave me a line on where I could find one.â
You glanced up to find him watching you intently. You gave him a small grateful smile and you could see relief flood through his expression before he covered it with a smile of his own.
He cleared his throat. âI got it before you showed up, butâŚI never watched it. I couldnât bring myself to. It felt wrong to watch it without you, especially after how you talked about it, so itâs been sitting in that case for months. I hope it still works.â He let out in a quiet chuckle.
You placed the box down on top of the TV and approached him. He watched as you cupped his face with your hands and pulled him down to you, your lips meeting for the first time since seeing him again. That all-too familiar feeling flooded you and this time, you didnât fight the smile that made its way to your face. âThank you.â
âYouâre welcome.â This time, he was the one initiating a kiss, and he snaked his arms around your waist, pulling you into him.
Only when you both needed air and he pulled away to trail kisses down to your neck did you tease into his ear, âSo exactly how many girls have you shown this movie to?â
âNone,â he breathed, nibbling on your earlobe. âI told you, I didnât want to watch it without you.â
âYou expect me to believe that you havenât shown the TV or the VCR to any other girls?â You chuckled.
He pulled back to meet your eyes. âOkay, yeah, fair enough, Iâve shown them both of those, but not that movie, I swear. That was always yours.â
You knew you should be disgustedânot only that he had been such a callous player in your absence but also because he had used similar moves on youâbut right then, you decided to throw all caution to the wind, even if just for one night. Seeing the movie picture again had reminded you that you needed to take happiness wherever you could find it, because thanks to your life, who knew how much longer you had?Â
âSo,â you whispered huskily as you ran your fingers through his hair. âWhat were you saying about a bed and no time limitâŚ?â
His eyes lit up with that familiar fire and he smirked. âOh, hell yes.â He kissed you harder than before and picked you up, making you laugh into his mouth, as he used his transgenic speed to get you to the bedroom.Â
You watched the images on the screen in awe. You and Alec were sharing a blanket to keep your nude bodies warm as you sat in his embrace, the only light in the place coming from the TV. He had his chin resting on your bare shoulder, watching the movie intently with you. The man from the movie poster, George, was telling the woman, Mary, how he was going to travel the world and he was listing off his dreams right before she threw a rock at the abandoned house they were facing. When they started singing, Alec began to frown, but you? You were completely enraptured. Youâd never seen or heard anything like this before.Â
In the beginning, the tape had seemed like it didnât want to work, black and white tears in the image as it played, but thankfully Alec knew what he was doing with the equipment and how to get it working. Ever since then, your eyes hadnât strayed from the screen once, even when Alec had tried to get a second round going, promising you he could pause the film and you could finish watching it later. When heâd failed to garner your attention, heâd pressed a kiss to the back of your head and settled behind you, letting out a quiet sigh of contentment as heâd burrowed into your neck before rejoining you in watching the movie.
When George told Mary that heâd give her the moon, Alec rolled his eyes and dropped a kiss onto your skin. âThatâs lame,â he muttered.
You turned to look at him. âWhy? Because he wants to give her anything she wants?â
âNo. Because heâs going to lasso the moon. Lasso the moon? Really?â
You laughed and he smiled, leaning in to kiss your cheek. âAlright, sure, itâs cheesy, but the message isnât.â
âItâs not?â Alec moved to kiss your ear.
âNo. He likes her that much, heâd do anything for her. Kind of nice actually,â you ended in a whisper as you turned back to the screen. You let out a soft chuckle when the old man interrupted the couple and told George that he talked too much and he should kiss Mary already.
Alec, who had glanced back at the screen to watch that part of the scene, turned an affectionate smile on you before leaning in to nuzzle your cheek. âStay here tonight,â he urged.
Your eyelids dropped halfway when he moved his lips to your neck and you dug your teeth into your bottom lip. âI canât. Joshua will be worried.â
âThe big guy will be just fine, trust me,â he promised, his lips gliding back to your shoulder. âI want you to stay.â
You thought it over. You both had reacquainted yourselves earlier quite nicely so that wasnât an issue. Just like Alec had said, it had been amazing to be in a bed for once, not under the pressure of a timeclock or having to worry about prying eyes and listening ears milling around. You didnât have to separate soon after you were finished if the guards Alec usually bribed werenât on shift that night. Here, you were free to just be and let things take their own course and that had been a phenomenal feeling. As for what came next⌠you werenât too sure about that. You hadnât done a lot of talking since Alec carried you into his bedroom and playfully dropped you on the bed, knowing it wouldnât hurt you. You had let out an incredulous laugh and he mirrored your grin before heâd been all over you.
You watched as he pressed tender kisses to your bare skin before glancing up at you hopefully. You took his face into your hand and he leaned into your touch. Seeing that, you decided to state your one condition if he truly wanted you to stay. âNo more girls.â You refused to look away as you threw down that gauntlet. While he never said he wanted anything more than tonight with you, you needed him to know that if this did somehow go past that, you wouldnât be wondering just who he had in his bed or on his couch a few hours before you would arrive at his front door. Or who he might bring back to this apartment to show his TV and VCR to.Â
He stared at you for a moment until the corner of his lips tipped up into a bit of a smug smile. âNo more girls,â he agreed.
You tilted your head at him, studying his expression.
âWhat?â He laughed.Â
âJust like that?â
Alecâs smile grew and he leaned in to place a kiss to the corner of your mouth. âJust like that.â You werenât the least bit surprised when he suddenly turned you around in his arms to face him, one hand keeping the blanket over you, cocooning you both. He wiggled his eyebrows playfully at you before covering both of your heads with the blanket and leaning in for the kill.
âWhat about the movie?â You laughed as he began to kiss your neck.
âThatâs the great thing about tapes. We can watch it again anytime we want,â he murmured, his hands starting to roam your body insistently.
âSo we can watch the lasso the moon part again?â You teased.
He groaned into your neck, making you laugh. âYeah, we can, if thatâs what you want,â he grumbled, sounding like he was going to majorly suffer when you watched it again.
You pulled back, smiling, and cupped his face. âI want you,â you told him earnestly. And you did. You wanted more nights with him like this, you wanted what you two had managed to create back in your cell. Studying him now, you could see the man who had become almost everything to you back then, whoâd kept you going during the rough moments, who ended up looking out for you even though he usually lived by the unwritten rule of only ever looking out for himself. Â
His eyes stared into yours and a small smile began to form on his face. âThen stay,â he urged.
You pretended to think over it for a minute and when you grinned over at him, his smile was already mirroring yours. âOkay,â you answered playfully, as if he had only posed a simple question like asking you if you wanted a drink or not. You moved up to kiss him and bury your fingers in his disheveled hair. âNo lassoing the moon required,â you murmured to his lips.
He rolled his eyes and quickly maneuvered you onto your back with him right on top of you. He smirked down at you, leaning in to kiss you. âIâll give you something better than the damn moon,â he mumbled into your mouth, making you laugh.Â
You didnât want the moon or the stars (except the ones Alec made you see exploding behind your eyelids from time to time) or anything else that grand. What you wanted was simple: everything right here in front of you at this moment. A life that was your own, a job that helped keep money coming in, a roof over your head that offered protection from the cold, the wet, and intruders, while offering you a safe space to rest your head at night; food in your stomach, clothes that fit, and the feelings that coursed through you every time Alec kissed you.
Post-pulse Seattle might not be Bedford Falls and you might not be George Bailey or even Mary for that matter, but you were free, you were building a life, and you were happy. And someday, if you lived long enough, you might even get that family youâd been yearning for. From the look of things, between Joshua, Max, and now Alec, you were hopefully already starting to form something akin to the idea. And really, what more could you ask for?
