everyone mentions a dream to be born into a royal family, but it isn't as glamorous as it seems. austin fox was the second born of three to anne & charles fox after an older brother and before a younger sister. his grandparents were basically a king and queen with their hollywood status. until their passing in which his parents took over the title. they were a family known around hollywood; for their talent, beauty and english accents. his mother did a lot of music and acting, where his father sole did actually, similar to their own parents. before this (with his grandparents still mostly focused on) the family was close spending a lot of time together like any family, but with his parents following the same path it wasn't long until things changed. his spent less time with his older brother, as he took up acting as well and more time with his sister as they bonded more over not wanting to follow suit in the family socialite name.

as a teenage he went to boarding school to have a bit more privacy and he was pretty for the idea. during his time there, austin ended up discovering his bisexuality but he had a bit more of a preference for men. for a time almost believing he was gay and the idea of coming out scared him, so he only told his sister and best friend. this is also when the two surprised austin, getting him his dog, who was everything to him. mentally it helped him a lot as well, he'd talk to his dog sometimes as if he was writing in a diary/journal.

once austin went off to university/college with the goal in mind to become a writer, he ended up getting his first real and long term relationship. enjoying the privacy of it during his two years of uni. after he introduced him to his family and while having all the support and love, his parents talked to him about how things could go upon coming out. it'd effect the whole family, as well as himself and to think through. this caused him to keep it hidden, scarred how things could change, despite his desire to be out and proud.

spending a good few years together until the topic of marriage and kids came in and austin panicked, ended things and spiraled. doing things to help him not think of it all as an escape. after a month his parents found out and he was practically exiled from the family as they panicked over their image (as well as austin's) without fully thinking, where he left london and moved out to maine. all he had for money was inheritance from his grandfather, and his mother would keep giving him money to make sure he could afford basic living until he found work. he managed to get a job at a local radio station which lead to his own radio show and podcast. despite missing london and his family, austin is happy with his life now living on his own and doing a job he loves, just his social skills need more work.

I think because Kate and Kaia follow each other on Instagram, as his publicist people thought Kate had a hand in getting Austin and Kaia together.

Since those two just seemed to randomly start dating. They weren't even friends before. Kaia was with JE and then BAM! was with Austin a month later. Since people always suspected Austin and Kaia were a PR relationship, given how quick Kaia jumped to Austin, they think Kate had something to do with it.

Also Kate being close with Kaia, especially at the beginning, made some in the fandom uncomfortable. I don't know if it's normal for a publicist to be super close with their clients significant other. Unless their married, then I get it.

During the Bikeriders press tour, Austin had Alex (who works with Kate and her company) handling Austin's appearances. Kate went to Australia with him though. Now this is all speculation: There was talks Austin had moved on from Kate, since he was having issues with Kaia. Again, going back to Kate being too close to Kaia. I don't know if that was true. It looked like could've changed his PR team when those L&S articles came out back in May. But I think Kate is still with him. Kate does have other clients, Nicholas Galitzine in particular. Declan has always done as was expected of him. At least, partially. It was no surprise to either of his parents that he disagreed with the actions that the wraiths were taking but this was the path they had chosen and therefor, Declan and his sister were expected to go along. It was cowardice in his eyes and a stupid tradition that they both refused to let go of. It seemed foolish to him and a waste of time apart from that he knew they were on the wrong side of history. The people behind this cause had lost not once but twice already. Why were they still on their side? Why the need to cause so much hurt and pain? The idea that they were still trying to continue an old way of thinking that just seemed backwards all around was ignorant to him and that was something that Declan has never had much patience for. Close-mindedness and ignorance and pointless harm.

Sometimes being a little too smart for his own good even as a child. He's never been someone to not call his parents out though over time, he's learned to keep his mouth shut if he doesn't want to end up under specific people's radars. In all honesty, only doing it for his sister who always begged him to go along with things out of fear of them suffering the consequences at the hands of the wrong people, specifically the leaders because they both knew their parents would do nothing to protect them.

Being sorted into Ravenclaw was something in itself that caused people's eyes on him. A Montague that didn't end in Slytherin was strange but many people didn't know that it was a close call. His father knew that his son had specific way of speaking, reading people and could pin point things others missed and so he made sure that Declan enhanced those skills and helped recruit students from within using the fact that perhaps people would be more trusting of him since he did not end up in Slytherin. Declan was expected to do this whether through manipulation or force. This made Hogwarts a very unpleasant experience where instead of focusing on just being a kid, he was expected more of the older he got. He tried to stay away from it, tried to brush his father off or pretend like he was doing as told but not following through but eventually his father grew impatient and began to use punishment as a means to get his son to do as he was told. His sister tried to plead with him but this just made Graham push his son even more and his mother easily turned a blind eye which started his resentment for them both.

His sister didn't posses the same skills that Declan did. She wasn't exceptional with her magic nor was she skilled with her words. She had strength, determination and stamina. So when she graduated, she became part of the first circle. One night when she was sent out to help recruit more of the creatures with the lies of being promised rights, she was attacked and killed. Something inside Declan died when he found out the news. A need for vengeance grew in him. If he didn't agree before, he much less did so now but he began to focus more on figuring out how to turn against the wraiths and ensure that they got what they deserved.

He focused on becoming the perfect soldier so that he'd be trusted more yet staying in the background to ensure he wasn't suspected of by anyone. He observed and made sure to wait until it was the proper moment to act. Upon graduating, he found himself studying under the department of magical enforcement as a means to get into the Wizengamot. It wasn't an easy task as his last name still lingered to cause him issues though he was an exceptional liar when needed as he had been trained to be. This made it easy to pass the tests presented to him and with his knowledge and dedication he found his way in. People assumed it was to get his hands in on the ministry and help to keep those captured out of Azkaban by having a voice in their court cases but truthfully, Declan wanted to be the one to condemn those who had a direct impact on his sister's death personally.

Somewhere along the line, he found himself within the erinyes after being recruited. He agreed to work as a double agent and becoming a child of hermes in the process. He isn't sure if vengeance is really the best reason to turn against his family but in truth, he doesn't care. His parents let his sister die without any remorse for something that wasn't even worth it or perhaps the fear kept their guilt at bay, he wasn't sure and he didn't care. Not anymore.

Wanted Connections: An extended hand: This would be someone who's seen past Declan's facade of working for the wraiths that are currently with the erinyes and instead notices the anger in him and offers him the opportunity to join and help bring them down.

Is it casual now?: Declan tends to sometimes use his ability to flirt to get his way though many would see this as manipulation. This person is someone who things have gone a little too far and emotions are now involved but being as Declan is so focused on his goal, he keeps them at bay and never really lets them in. Moving from Kentucky to Lima was never something that Sam had ever thought would happen until it did. With his father picking up a new job in his Sophomore year of high school that was meant to come with nice commissions, it was a no brainer that the family pack up and move; the peace of mind of the extra money was worth the moving to a small town in another state.

School has never come easy for Sam. Sometimes words blurred together and concentration was hard. Keeping focused on school was difficult at the best of times, and even harder again when the topics were boring. What was easy were sports, music and drawing. When class was a bore, Sam would whip out his notebook and doodle away. Konstantinos Spiridakos came to America on a student visa. He lands at the college in Willowdale, where he meets and befriends Wilden Lightfoot. It is many years later, however, before the Spiridakos family crosses paths with the Lightfoots, yet again. This time, it is in a place called New Mushroomton, just outside of Detroit. Konstantinos is married now, has two young children - Lyra, who's six, and Angelo, who is three - a lovely young wife, Daphne, expecting a third child, and the shine of hope in their eyes.  It is only once they set down roots, in a small apartment in an impoverished area of this small, Detroit suburb, that the Spiridakos family realizes that, perhaps, America was not the dream Konstantinos had initially believed it to be. 

The rules that governed the city itself were, to put it mildly, ugly. To put it bluntly, they were cruel. The city presented itself as Magick friendly, but the stringent rules and regulations placed upon any Magick were, oftentimes, dehumanizing. The Spiridakos children were taught early on, despite this, to wear their Magick status as a badge of honor, unable to hide it away; it was actively illegal to do so, and would have resulted in hefty consequences none in the family wished to face. 

(Satyr, while not dangerous, had been misinterpreted by myth and false information. Fun-loving, occasionally mischievous, nature spirits, they were now equated to lecherous, hedonistic drunkards. It was this misinterpretation that often found Konstantinos unable to find work, the children unable to find many friends, and Daphne so stressed about her life she lost her child.) 

Life for the Spiridakos family isn't sparkling, but it does become better upon relocating when Konstantinos finds a job - after fleeing from a group of anti-Magicks that had threatened the children, of course - and meeting Laurel Lightfoot.  Konstantinos remembers the name Lightfoot fondly. His children learn to, as well. 

The Spiridakos and Lightfoot children get along like a proverbial house on fire, Ian and Angelo, Lyra and Barley. The children played, got into (and out of!) trouble. Thick as thieves, they were, and Angelo adored his friends. When he’s about ten and Ian eight, however, Ian leaves. The Lightfoots leave. 

For a while, it leaves a bit of a rift. People Angelo cared about – Ian, Barley, his mother – kept leaving. He didn’t quite know why, if it was something about him, or just the place they lived, in general. He learned from that, though. Keep yourself a bit harsher, a bit aloof. Make yourself unapproachable, even mean, and people won’t want to hurt you. Won’t want to leave. 

For a long time, well into his teenage years, Angelo projected himself as a bully, as someone with a temper and an anger under his skin that kept people at a distance. It wasn’t until he was just out of high school, or nearly, and lonely that he realized how much he’d really lost, what he’d messed up having to hide behind thick walls and multiple layers. The only time he was himself was when he flew to Greece to visit family and his mother, when he could find her. Daphne was aloof during those visits, almost timid, like she didn’t want to know the young man her boy had grown into. Like she was afraid to face what she had left behind. He’s twenty-four, now, though. 

Angelo is steadier, calmer. Still with a chip on his shoulder, sure, but he takes it out less on the people around him, those he cares about.  When he was about twenty-two, give or take, Ian Lightfoot reached out. They spoke, reconnected. Became friends again, if you could call it a friendship.

(Angelo certainly hoped that he could).  And, well, he heard all about Swynlake.  So, he figures, why can’t he make a detour, stay for a while? Catch up with Ian properly, see what this town has to offer. Hell, maybe he’ll even decide to stay, for a little while.

Baby boy Blake was never the golden boy as much as he tried. Since he was born, he caused nothing but trouble for his mother at least; his father never paid much attention, being honest. He was born during a camping trip; Ms. Dietrich started with contractions and even bleeding while swimming in the lake. She was hurried to the hospital and because of that, he was named Blake which means Son of Lake.

He was second to an older brother named Quade: the football star in high school, the one everybody talked about and you cannot blame them! He was quite the charmer, quite the… manipulator. Blake always stood in his shadow, but he didn’t really mind, Quade was the only one who ever really paid attention to him. You see, his father was an important business man while his mother was basically a socialite back when they lived in New York before he was born. They moved to Moorbrooke because little towns were in that season. Blake’s dad kept going to NY to keep up with his office job and sometimes the mother would go with him to update her wardrobe. ( more to come on the parents later ).

The matters of normies never affected them much until there were some news about a possible gang in town and still, it was a rather unimportant thing... until they took Quade.        SPOILER: Quade is alive.

The family mourned so much for a month and afterwards, they just closed Quade’s bedroom door and kept it like that forever, ignoring the memory of their son and ignoring their pain. Blake didn’t find the truth of what happened to his brother until he was around 17 years old. Quade came to him in the shape of a beast, not quite literally, but on his window appeared the silhouette of a man with a mask. Long story short: Quade was alive, he had faked his death by hands of the gang to start anew as the new leader said gang that had been terrorizing Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont. This gang was called THE PACK and their distinctive nature was the use of animal masks to hide their identities; Quade as leader, was the only one allowed to use a human skull mask.

Blake was inivited to join him and since Quade was the only one who accepted him, he said yes. Anything for his big brother. He joined The Pack under the identity of HELLHOUND. While using the mask, far from being a regular mid-twentieth boy, Blake became a strategist and a killing machine with guns and cars. He was the image of anarchy itself disrupting order and creating mayhem anywhere he stepped. Gunshots, arson, uncontrollable parties and so on. Hellhound followed the leader’s rules with eagerness as long as he could rip apart and destroy whatever or… whoever.

But nobody knew! For everyone else, he was still one to go to church every Sunday, attending cocktail parties to pass the time and getting ready to join his father’s company; although he had secretly started taking some online courses and clases of history and literature because his main goal in life was to become a poet.

A strong Gryffindor, Blake is playful and madly loyal; one to pull at your hair during mass but one to follow the rules when he is under Quade’s orders. Bad Boy ‘til the end, he has a reputation for getting in trouble, but nothing ever too damaging to actually get arrested. Not a favorite of the cops most likely. Secretly sweet and with a secret knack to bake and write, but these are not hardcore so people don’t really know about them. Loves attention, used to get in trouble at school so his parents paid attention to him.

Over the years, French author Charles Perrault’s 1697 folk tale Cinderella has been adapted countless times. It was a Disney animated musical (Cinderella, 1950), Cinderella was even a fella (Cinderfella, 1960), a high school student (A Cinderella Story, 2004) and a celebration of diversity with a non-white cast (Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, 1997). In Ever After (1998), which featured historical characters from the 16th and 19th centuries, Anjelica Huston was the quintessential wicked stepmother, and Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella (2015) adaptation featured Lily James as an empowered young Ella, the girl covered in cinder who loses her glass slipper at the ball and falls in love with a charming prince till they live happily ever after.

The latest adaptation, based on director Kay Cannon’s screenplay, sidesteps the clichés yet ticks the boxes of wicked stepmother and stepsisters, a charming prince (played by Nicholas Galitzine) and a lot of pop songs. However, in Cannon’s updated Cinderella, the fairy godparent is genderless (played by Billy Porter) and this Cinderella, played by singer-songwriter Camila Cabello in her movie debut, is no whimpering wallflower. She’s got dreams and ambition to become a fashion designer. Her happily ever after is not dependent on a handsome prince.

A new role model

When asked about how their version of the classic is different from previous versions, Cabello says via an email interview, “It’s a totally new telling of the story. I feel like other fairy tales have values that are old-fashioned and don’t reflect the independence and strength of women accurately. This version has definitely been updated for a 2021 audience and world. The spirit of the story is there, with the characters and some themes, but it feels much more current in its values.”

Featuring a CEO Cinderella, a diverse cast of townsfolk, a line-up of princesses from around the world (don’t miss the cameo by Japanese comedian Naomi Watanabe) and a fairy godparent whose costume merges masculine and feminine elements, here’s a classic tale upended to become a modern-day story of female empowerment. “The modern, fresh take on a well-trodden fairy tale allows us to discuss contemporary issues and themes and hopefully make this version more relatable to audiences. The modern songs are an amazing contrast to the period aesthetic that is represented in the costumes and setting. I also think the film brings more humour than we've seen in previous fairy tales, which is largely due to Kay Cannon and the array of comedic actors in our cast,” adds Galitzine.  

From the trailer, it appears that this version is far more empowering for Cinderella. “Definitely, and this version of Cinderella is way more relatable to young girls and women who might be able to see something from the character’s experience in their own life,” says Cabello, who describes her Ella as “empowered and ambitious, with dreams of her own. It’s a Cinderella in which she saves herself. She doesn’t aspire to be a wife or a part of the royal family, she’s too busy working on her fashion empire.”

So does that leave Galitzine’s prince simply holding a glittery glass slipper? When asked how Prince Robert is different, if at all, from the legacy character of the charming Prince, Galitzine explains, “It is often said that the prince’s role in these fairy tales is singular: to marry the princess. But while finding love is one aspect of Prince Robert’s story, his quest for freedom is more important. He’s a man who feels trapped by his circumstance, stifled by the responsibilities of the crown and the role he is expected to play. He’s figuring himself out for a lot of the movie, and Cinderella really aids in this. Bringing a level of humanity and vulnerability to him was so important in differentiating him from other princes. I also feel we tried to make him a little edgier than princes before him through the music and costumes.”

Costume drama

The fashion-obsessed will find it hard to separate Cannon’s 2021 Cinderella from the costumes, not just because fashion is Ella’s dream profession, but it’s also her mode of expression. Working with the costume department and taking on the part of an aspiring couturier were among the highlights of Cabello’s experience on this film. “I loved my work costumes! They were so comfortable but still had Ella’s swag to them. Ellen Mirojnick and her team were so passionate and full of joy for what they were doing. They were so in love with Ella and the values she represented. In a time where women’s self-expression is so limited, she uses fashion to express herself. Even when she’s dressing for work she has accessories in her hair and puts unique details in her corsets. I think it shows how much self-expression and authenticity are important to her. Obviously, the story has romantic themes and I think that shows in the costumes. They’re very romantic, magical costumes—but designed with Ella’s character in mind. As she makes her own clothes, there were considerations about how she might have made certain decisions or designed things in a certain way. She even makes her own ball gown.”

Costume designer Mirojnick, who brought alive the world of Bridgerton with her clothes, also had the edgy Porter to work with, and she took inspiration from the monarch butterfly to create the godparent’s (named Fab G), gown with wings and custom Jimmy Choo boots.

Cabello equally loved working with Porter and all that his character represents. “His version of the Fairy Godmother is genderless. After all, magic doesn’t have a gender. Fab G guides Cinderella and helps her dreams come true…but she gets there by staying true to herself along the way,” she explains.

Of all his co-actors, from Cabello to Minnie Driver and Pierce Brosnan, British actor Galitzine was most in awe of Brosnan. “Working with Pierce Brosnan and Minnie Driver was just a dream. A bit of a pinch-yourself moment. They are icons but are so down-to-earth and giving. I was just trying to soak up as much knowledge from them as possible. Minnie is so funny, and Pierce is my James Bond. I should have asked him for some tips if I ever throw my hat in the ring for a future Bond,” says the 26-year-old, perhaps not entirely in jest. On his co-star Cabello, he adds, “I feel so lucky that Camila and I clicked straight away. Even from the chemistry test. We have a similar sense of humour and a willingness to learn, which bonded us throughout the process. To me, Camila is an old soul and carries herself with such wisdom. I love working with actors like that.”

Modern day fairy tale

The lead actors, our digital cover stars for the month, agree that it’s time to update fairy tales and align them to a 21st century audience, where girls and boys of today feel seen in popular culture. Cabello says it is about time that ��little girls can see themselves being represented in Aladdin or The Little Mermaid.” Galitzine adds, “The idea of the damsel in distress is fast becoming obsolete. I think young women want to see themselves, and indeed their hopes and dreams, represented in characters. This film does an incredible job in bringing diversity in its cast and crew, which I think is integral in the process of updating these fairy tales for a modern-day audience.”

So do either of them believe in ‘happily ever after’? Galitzine says he believes that relationships take work: “Nothing is ever perfect. You have to make compromises and sacrifices, and it won’t always be as glamorous as the fairy tales may suggest. But I do believe there is a person out there who will love you for all your imperfections and messiness. And those kinds of people will be with you for a very long time.”

Cabello, on the other hand, agrees with the film’s updated take that an individual’s happiness is not dependent on another. “I guess the idea of ‘happily ever after’ is part of the old ideals of fairy tales, where the princess is destined to be with a prince, and that’s where her happiness will come from. But I like to think we’re redefining that idea with this film, and that you can be happy in yourself and with your own ambition. That being said, I am a huge Disney fan, so I will always be happy that I got the chance to be in this movie.”
