Not too sure how to feel about the result but at least got the new idea for Heatwave’s holoform out.
(@azula-nyx, @draqua Heatwave also has fangs, but they’re not as prominent as Chase’s (Chase’s fangs looked too blunt in the last doodle).)
(Also, @sarai-the-furry because I know what you are.)

Soul Eater has always been a bizarre case. on one end of the spectrum there's characters like Kilik Rung, Mira Nygus, and even major manga antagonist Noah. on the other end there's the infamous bg jazz band that are straight up minstrels (they look identical in the manga. this was not studio bones' artistic liberty) and the death scythe repping Africa named Dengu Dinga who wears a mashup of "african flavoured" clothing. and then there's Sid, obviously i can't pass judgement on what's good or bad design rep but there certainly was a scene where Maka literally calls him a "mean blue gorilla"..
sorry for rambling, but Ohkubo absolutely takes inspiration from graffiti art and hip hop aesthetics in his work which makes the antiblackness even more disrespectful
Feel free to ignore that ask if the topic is bogging you down btw, I didn't see your last post if you're done engaging with the topic for now feel free to delete it. Looking forward to what you do with strawberry moon <3
Oh dude you're good. I just needed a nap before I answered more lol. I'll try and answer as many of these as I can because I'm honestly enjoying the discussion even though I have to step away from it for a bit. It's triggering to me but not in a way that I can't talk about it, just bogs down my mind ya know?
Anyway, I've never watched Soul Eater so I had no idea of the Black characters in the show! I had to look them up and I see what you're saying. Mira is a stereotype because I'd consider her a sexualized Black woman in this context. Kilik is like 100% fine to me at a glance, like he just looks like a Black guy though there may be some writing I'm missing that still makes him a stereotype.
I had no idea that he was influenced by graffiti art but I TOTALLY see it now in his shape language. Sid is by far the worst since he still has the big white teeth and a more 'gangster' aesthetic. Especially considering the time period Soul Eater was released, it's in poor taste at best and still perpetuating Black stereotypes at worse.
Anime is it's own sub-genre of racism in animation. White people LOOOOOVE to say "oh it's a different culture and they don't know" LMAO YES THEY DO DON'T PLAY stop infantilizing Asians you fucking sickos.
Colorism alone is such an issue in Asian countries. I've lived with people from China, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, and the Philippines. I've heard first hand accounts of people from the Philippines being treated like lesser human beings just for having a slightly darker skin-tone and don't get me started on how Chinese imperialism has impacted Taiwanese people. I'm not going to speak for disenfranchised Asian people but it's easy to find if you look it up. But my point is if colorism is that prevalent, imagine how much worse it is when your entire culture has a history of being exploited to the point that blackface is a worldwide issue.
Also the Boondocks exists and though not a perfect example, it still has some of the best depictions of Black people in an anime style. There's no excuse to draw racist stereotypes when there's literally 5 seasons worth of overall solid Black character designs that can be referenced for other series.

WHAT I’M CURRENTLY WATCHING
It's been a while since I made one of these lists. But here I am with a new one, including the queer shows I'm currently watching. (As always, they're in alphabetical order, because that's just how I am, lol).
4 Minutes (Thailand):
This show is my current obsession. Period. The content on my blog being 99.999999999% about 4 Minutes right now says it all.
Addicted Heroin (2024) (Thailand):
I've seen both the original as well as Stay With Me, which were both fine. I was curious enough to see what Thailand would do with it, which is why I'm watching. And I'm loving it, so far.
I like Hero, even though he's an idiot. And I like the supporting pair. Hero's dad, though... No.
Battle of the Writers (Thailand):
I still have no idea what this show is about except for a couple of writers, two of which have a history together. But, I got to see three of my Playboy babes, so that's a win for me.
First Note of Love (Taiwan):
I'm spoiled with my beloved Taiwanese QLs right now. I'm even more spoiled that I have yet another very rare show where I can actually listen to the music played and sung without muting the damn thing. And I'm spoiled fucking rotten because I've got Charles Tu on my screen again.
I love everything about this show 5 episodes in, and it makes my Mondays a lot brighter (and my Mondays were fine before this, btw).
Happy of the End (Japan):
I like my Japanese shows dark and complicated. So, I'm obviously loving this.
Hidden Moon (Thailand):
I'm only one episode into this one so I don't really have much to say other than that I like the vibe and that it's visually stunning so far (always a plus for me).
I Hear the Sunspots (Japan):
I'm a bit torn with this one. But I love the representation of the deaf community because my great-grandfather was deaf.
(Kind of unrelated, but kind of not: My great-grandfather didn't know sign language, he just read lips. And he was always most comfortable around people who treated him like just anyone else.)
I Saw You In My Dream (Thailand):
Considering I only started watching this because I saw a gif of Ai wearing a Dream Theater shirt (which was my dad's favorite band before he passed away), I wasn't expecting much. But it's surprisingly enjoyable.
The only critique I have is that they ended this week's episode right in the middle of Ai and Yu kissing. Not that I think they'll go all the way in that particular scene. One of them will probably stop. But cutting the scene there... That's just rude. (I'm joking... But kind of not.)
Kidnap (Thailand):
I'm just one episode in so I don't have much to say other than that I love that Papang is in it. I always need more of him on my screen.
Live in Love (Thailand):
This is another one I'm only one episode into (the second one comes out today), so I don't have much to say other than that I really like the vibe so far.
Monster Next Door (Thailand):
I'm a simple girl. I would watch Big in anything as long as he's kissing boys, because this boy knows how to kiss boys.
The On1y One (Taiwan):
Again, I'm spoiled with my beloved Taiwanese QLs right now. And this one is everything to me.
I knew it would be amazing (it's from the same director who made Your Name Engraved Herein) so, no surprise there. And if I wasn't so busy screaming about 4 Minutes during the little spare time I have now that I'm in the middle of a big art project, I would be screaming about this show.
I only needed 10 seconds of the first episode to be hooked (them looking at each other was all I needed to be sold). 6 episodes in, and I'm in heaven.
Seoul Blues (Korea):
This is from the same creators of Blue Boys and Bad Guy and I'm watching it solely for the chemistry and the... how should I describe it? Mellow vibe?
The Trainee (Thailand):
I had a hard time getting into this one. Mainly because I can't relate to the whole office environment thing (I've always worked for myself). But somewhere around the end of the second episode or the beginning of the third, I was sold. Mostly due to the dynamics between the characters and that everyone is unique and flawed in their own way. Plus, the colors are amazing.
It's been a while since I had at least one new episode to watch every day (I think it was sometime before the summer), so I'm starting to get back to normal again. And I love it here.

SORRY i keep coming here to yell !! you got me thinking about cdramas (& t dramas) i enjoyed and then forgot about :"] i watched 如果奔跑是我的人生 earlier this year and the ending lost me, but i was quite captivated by its 20+ episodes before. it centres around parental relationships (asian) and, i don't know much about dance at all but a main character is a dancer and her story made me feel things. the performances were sick, in my unprofessional opinion! I'm Fine is a gorgeous ost track. btw.... i've started rewatching 不良执念清除师 again and i CANNOT RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY ENOUGH. i've been thinking about it (on ep 5 LOL) and i actually don't think the ending dropped the thread or ball or 链子 or however that saying goes (im fever SORRY.... i think it was cathartic and beautiful in the way a galaxy is— i just could not get enough of those guys T__T 不良执念清除师 is about sulky teen (??) guys moving through the world with so much heart. it's about LOVE and ART and how the living go on after tragedy, it's about how. how (PARDON ME....) we get to keep everything we've ever loved for even a fraction of a moment & what we are doing is worthwhile even if it is very small !!!!! it is a show that is, in Voice from IMBD's words, an outstanding Taiwanese drama that excels in every aspect, because it was made with so much care and love...(meta!) also, gay people
first of all No Apology thank you for coming to yell!!! you have a big heart full of love for the world and it moves me!!!! i went down this rabbit hole on m*dramalist after watching 我们的少女时代/our times (2015)-
(tangent incoming) this movie Shook the secondary 2 scene in singapore when it came out everyone and their dog was sobbing about it and i listened to 小幸运 Religiously despite never seeing it myself. Having Seen It Now, it is a sweet little thing and it makes me feel desperately old. it also made me CRY, what can i say i’m a sucker for distances and ships passing in the night and i was soooo happy when liudehua appeared and then adult xutaiyu showed up and he Fuck Ass Hair. my lord, his hair looked like SHIT. PICKLED SEAWEED……… i couldn’t cry after that because i was so busy clenching my asscheeks out of sheer despair FUCK HAIR AND. AND!!! A TOO SHORT BLACK BLAZER ON SKINNY JEANS??? I MEAN REALLY??? I KNOW 2015 WAS NINE YEARS AGO but i don’t recall fuckass hair being the in thing then…. this memory i do not have…. you have to understand how emotionally devastating this was to me…… (tangent end)
(tangent part 2) (please look at the way they styled this poor man’s fuck ass hair. i don’t care how earth shatteringly sweet they were in high school if my first love turned up ten years later and he looked like this i would simply walk away)
Tumblr media
(tangent end)
the point is, that i then went through vivian sung’s acting history to see what else she’d been in bc she was soooooo lovely and realized that 不良执念清除师 was in said history and then remembered this ask! and your heartfelt words about its story! and i was like Oghey, i watch—
just finished the first episode and mein gott yiyong is such a Teenager…… man i look at 18 year olds and i’m like i don’t remember being like that but i Know i must’ve been, once upon a time. but the range of emotions the script wrung out of him in one episode was kind of insane and his actor is kind of vibey as hell (perhaps this is my sign from god to finally watch your name engraved herein…) and vivian sung is still epic as hell and sooo goofy and i’m excited! i think of u in my head for some reason as the epic tight as hell short chinese dramas anon, i Trust your eyes. they’re good eyes. i’ve also locked down the first 20+ episodes of the other drama you mention here, especially because yang chao yue is in it and she was Breathtaking in the double T T T thank you for the recs! where do you find all of these? i don’t know but you must be doing good out in the world. be well anon. meet a chicken

Additional info about Ying Yue!
Hello everyone!! Yup it's me here again and since I have showed y'all my KFP oc Ying Yue, I thought might as well give some additional info about him! So have fun reading hehe.
Tumblr media
(Yes this drawing above is old btw from november 2023, like I told in the last post this was his time when I drew his design)
He's from the canton region so he has a cantonese accent, but can still very well speak mandarin, he likely speaks mandarin only when he's in the other regions or meeting the others. (he's also from Taiwan! So... cantonese-taiwanese, yeah.)
He can be sassy at times, especially sarcastic as well when others sometimes forgets that he's blind.
Ying Yue will meet Po and the panda will somehow manage to befriend him, yes. The two will have a brother-like bond.
He can dance and he actually likes it. And it's all CANON.
He likes rocks, LMAO. The reason why is that while he can't see them at all, he can feel it. And he loves all different kinds of shapes the rocks have.
He's a morally grey character. No, he is not the brightest even if he may seem like it y'all.
(More will be updated probs later!!)

The Eye..
it’s a trickhawk AU but rex is here too. trickhawkrex AU even.
ehrm okay so basically i got a bit too insane and like hey haha. here’s this. the three of them are young adults working for an agency known as the eye (fun fact: it’s a reuse of an old AU) which has one purpose and that’s to eliminate dangerous supernatural entities. and BY GOD will i use this squint a little at the misinterpretation/misuse of + modern day exoticism of asian mythology by mainstream media. and also to stab at my own hypocrisy (yet again) (as most of my original lore does)
... also monster hunter trope funny. yeah i’m probably going to private this because i feel weird about talking about lore entwined with cultural backgrounds online HAHAHA. do i just feel uncomfortable discussing the topic because i’m deluded into feeling like it’s going to be tokenised and capitalised on?! but also i don’t want to sandpaper them into pop culture!! like our backgrounds do matter & can be so important to context & not used as just a gimmick actually
Tumblr media
ehrm considering this takes place somewhere in the UK (might retcon/redevelop. i always struggle with working with real places, and ones i’ve never even been make me worried!!) the current brief background concepts (and BEAR WITH ME!! THIS IS SUPER BIASED. THIS A PROJECT BORN FROM BIAS) are
a) i was thinking trick is of anglo-indian (father’s) and malayali (kerala specifically, mother’s) ethnic heritage, with family in kerala? raised christian but disconnected from religion. that got made worse by the whole pseudo-yakshini thing where after they almost died, they kind of became halfway one and now ask their mother a lot about her heritage (before she got married, converted and immigrated. which by the way my aunt is a hindu convert to catholicism but she still creates shrines except for catholicism now. which is fascinating and i’m leaning into this a lot) i feel like it leans more into folkloric than religious but we’ll seeeee? i was thinking also trick and their mother both identify with queerness in some capacity and it’s something they talk about. trick moreso in social gender and body stuff and their mother moreso in sexuality. also! their mother is a professor of some kind (her original lore has her in some akin to sociology BUT. HM.), father in something government. which is vague. and there’s a lot of govt. jobs. so give me a MINUTE.
b) rex is from a taiwanese family with a taoist background. taoism mostly because i’m projecting a little bit again. i totally love being mixed and knowing nothing from either side guys. wow this hasn’t been showing in recent lore at all. anyways! rex is a international student whose parents are foreign (and they’re finance people) with a permanent residency in the UK. thinkin. his maternal grandmother and grandfather moved in recently too due to getting old and safety concerns. i’m not fully sure about this yet but yeah. also there’s abandonment guilt here. also his family tree is more like a family forest btw he has like 6 uncles & aunts on his paternal side. lunar new year visits back are hell for him. i may actually change this to be hongkong but i’ll have to think about the implications of that and kind of stare a bit at political stuff so hold up.
c) i’m torn between making hawks an international scholarship student or having immigrant parents and being raised here. hawks is also central asian, but i’m once again struggling to decide between uzbekistan and kazhakstan. because background is important but like not in a put-you-in-a-box way. agh, sorry i think i really dislike when characters are caricatures of cultures as an attempt at representation? i feel like this has been out into words before in a way better than i will though. anyways researching cultural and economic information is not something i’m awesome at so it’ll take me a sec. the family is irreligious but there are some ideas of spirituality her parents have that she also possesses. she has a half-brother. her family being nuclear and very estranged from her relatives due to her mother remarrying feels like crucial information to mention.
i want to also involve the culture of their setting too and the other non-native cultures that have been infused into it because i feel like that’s cool and neat for countries with large immigrant populations and. ponderous. hm. i feel like i lost the plot thinking about the background LAWL okay back to the beef of it. oh that was terrible to say.
PLOT CONCEPT?! > comically borrowing some ideas from The End Of Times which is an old dead lore world of mine. wait hey.. actually.. this can be referred to as the conceptual successor of that.
trickhawk is a lot worse in this by the way. hashtag mutual parasitism! so this is not the same as original trickhawk sorry not sorry.
The Eye is a publicly known agency that deals with supernatural threats that have suddenly become commonplace after some kind of seal was broken. workshopping this but it’s your usual lame “oooh myths are real and this ancient secret society that has been dealing with them forever gets officially recognised by global governments as an enforcement body but also like. it’s a sovereign entity with no official oversight and everyone is kind of worried about that actually.”
trick and rex were both employed by it around the age of 17 and have been partners since. they were part of a larger team as apprentices before going solo. rank at the lower levels of this organisation is probably relaxed and field agents get a lot of free roam since they tend to have unique abilities and also this used to be a SECRET society up until 30 years ago and stricter administration hasn’t caught up with it well.
trick is here as a result of being kind of afflicted by a curse maybe. yakshini-adjacent abilities that they gained at age 15 after getting straight up hit by a car, which have been freaking them out. they’re essentially partially undead and not pleased about it. supernatural ties are luckily an employable skill in this world so boom! that! and rex is here due to receiving a divinely blessed weapon which i think is also the cause of some guilt in his family. the power he wields has ties to the goddess mazu and oceanic themes. which fun fact! trick also values coastal symbols due to their family in kerala. i think it’s something that binds them.
UHM SO. trick and rex meet hawks in school and gets called away to deal with a supernatural thing that happens to be in the vicinity, hawks stubbornly and unfortunately gets involved. finding out what trick is, hawks offers blood to trick for a ticket into the agency which she believes will help her out. why. great question. I’M FIGURING THAT OUT.
hawks getting involved in some level of magecraft (something not innately magical employees of the eye tend to do) as a result of needing to succeed makes her siphon magic off of trick who constitutes as a magical creature. yay they’re both parasites. this is not symbiotic as they’re both being harmed? rex kind of is there to heal both and maintain the cycle. FYI rex’s divinity does contrast a bit with trick’s more malevolent mythic nature but. thinking of how yakshinis have different regional interpretations. thinking about that but not doing anything with it.
anyways oh my god this is so cringe and tropey AND UGH I HATE IT BUT I WANT TO THINK ABOUT IT FOR WHATEVER REASON. them as a trio dynamic is so appealing to me all of a sudden. also trick’s exaggeratedly friendly obsession with hawks in this AU is hitting me some kind of way. (it’s me going “oh i saw a character dynamic i like but it’s not me-coded enough. going to do it my way now”)
also! new tag.

went to the pop toy show with an enabler ( ˶°ㅁ°) !!
we managed to dodge the crowd by going on the last day of the event. didn't even have to queue for wristband collection?? we just walked right into the hall. a lot of booths were also holding discounted clearance sales, so that's an additional bonus.
bought my first designer toy..... it's a cheesebox for chi. chi has been glued to it ever since i brought it home. does chi think of cheesebox as a friend?? or as an emergency food source?? i'm not sure.
fish and chips for lunch @ p.s. cafe ↓↓
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the banana butterscotch bundt cake doesn't look like that when it's served btw. i did the halving (usually disastrous) and plating myself. somehow it turned out pretty good??
accidentally ordered still water instead of iced/table water. gg $10 for expensive water.
eggplant lasagna for dinner @ da paolo gastronomia ↓↓
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i rly appreciate meatless lasagnas!!! it was good.
this time we ordered sparkling water on purpose just to sample it. expensive water taste test.....
toy loots:
cheese box from boxboxlab + bonus sketches - i received two(!!) sketches from the artist. he gave me one even though i was just browsing?? the second one came with my purchase. also had the artist sign cheesebox!! hehe.
taiwanese snack crying fellows blind box (got a mantou with egg and a silver thread bun) - $5 for one blind box?? a steal. didn't get the one i wanted but it's ok mantou egg is cute too.
burger blind box (got the charcoal bun) - ingredients are all separate parts so if i had gotten more than one bun, i could swap the ingredients around.
spider cat pouch from abaoabaoabao - it has a mouth!!! with a set of spiky teeth!! so cute.

Okay since prompts are open and congratulations on 1K btw!!
Thai- A TinnGun (My School President) fic where Tinn and Gun are happily living together, best moments in their life and has settled down. Tinn seeing Gun happy is what makes his heart full.
...till Tinn woke up and realizes it's only a dream because in real life, Gun died because he was raped and murdered while going home. And the last thing he received from him was: "I'll be home soon. I love you!"
Taiwanese- a MODC x ShiGu nsfw fic where after ShiGu tutored them to help to their academic needs, the gang then rewarded him with rather, a wild very nsfw one afterschool. (Aka did it in the classroom after class). Kinks include taking turns and filling him up (aka breeding)
Thanks!
I will add them both on, but the Non-con aspect of the first prompt will not be done as i DO NOT write about that. I hope that is still fine

F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers
Tumblr media
Of course I will watch whatever version of Boys Over Flowers comes along. I cannot believe I still have not gotten tired of this storyline. I must say, that the first version I saw was not the best, the Korean version with bad acting and the abusive love message was not the best, but those were other times. The newer versions have modernized the story and I like the female main character more and more.
Tumblr media
I always enjoy the best friend with the playboy set-up, in this case interpreted by Kaning and Kavin. I was whooped since the moment he called her chipmunk hahaha. It was too short for me at the end, I wish I could see more between them but I know that in most of the adaptations it has been like this -not much focus on this side couple.
Tumblr media
I also like Gorya. She had the feisty attitude from the main character that we love so much and the famous scene where the female character kicks the male and he falls for her was done splendidly here.
Tumblr media
The Who Am I OST is my favorite! I listen to this song quite often because I enjoy it so much. They all look very cute in the video btw.
Tumblr media
I thought Gorya and Thyme had wonderful chemistry and they were also funny. His fashion choices were a bit too intense for me but the other guys were always well dressed.
Tumblr media
The mom was quite intense and at the end the show was too much of a novela for me. I was not so happy with the ending. Even so, I enjoyed and will miss the show. Maybe we will still get a remake by nother Asian country or one of the countries that have done the other versions. Now I am actually curious to retake the Taiwanese version. The female character there was pretty bad ass as well.

(bad buddy schedule anon from earlier) excellent thank you for the info :) I feel like I'm gonna get invested so I want to wait until it's all out haha! as an aside--I really like your drama posts and it seems like you have good taste, do you have any recommendations other than the shows you've been watching recently? I kind of don't trust the wider internet lol
Hi again! Thank you so much, that's so sweet!!! 💖 I'm happy you asked! I watched a lot of dramas and while with bl especially it's often a hit and miss, I definitely have a few recs.
I not sure which ones count as recent because I've binge watched so much stuff lately and time has no meaning, but I think - bad buddy aside - I've been mainly posting about kieta hatsukoi, utsukushii kare and not me, so I won't mention those. (Except that I did. Just now.)
I made a list! It turned out longer than I anticipated even though I tried to keep it short ;_; so I'm just gonna add a cut here
Thai bl
3 will be free
A tale of thousand stars
I watched a lot more thai dramas that were okay and mostly enjoyable, but these are my favourites!! They have genuine interesting plot besides the gay love story ('Not me' has that too btw!!!!!). 3WBF has a poly throuple of sorts and they are on the run from the mafia, really thrilling, badass female characters. And ATOTS is also directed by P'Aof, who does bad buddy. I should also mention 'He's coming to me', also by p'aof and with ohm pawat (pat from bad buddy) in the lead role. It's a cute ghost love story!
Korean bl
Color rush
To my star
where your eyes linger
I also watched 'Light on me' and I did like it, but for some reason I didn't finish it. I'm also not the biggest fan of love triangles, that was a little annoying imo. Still recommendable though I guess
Some other good kdramas, not BL
Beyond evil
The devil judge
Strangers from hell
These three belong to the 'merciless evil devil from hell' mega fandom, alongside with 'the merciless' but I haven't watched that one yet. I love this fandom mashup though! They all have a similar vibe that I like to call "morally gay" lol. I mean, you sure they aren't bl????
Zombie detective
Coffee prince
These two are plain fun! Zombie detective is what it says on the tin - he's a zombie and a detective! It's silly and endearing with a very subtle romance, I hope they make a season two. Coffee prince is just a really sweet romance drama from 2007
Taiwanese bl
We best love: no. 1 for you
We best love: fighting mr second
Your name engraved herein
We best love is my favourite thing!!! I love it so much. The sequel is not as good as the first one, but I still liked it. I have a weird aesthetic crush on zhao shi yi. Honestly don't remember much of YNEH but it was good and very emo I think.
Jdrama
Cherry magic
Cherry magic is so popular do I even need to say something? I hated the author guy, at some point started skipping his scenes. Otherwise 10/10 love the aroace rep.
Nobuta wo produce
Dele
Smoking
Okay okay okay, nobuta wo produce, dele and smoking are imo criminally underrated dramas!!! At least on tumblr, I know nobuta was really popular in japan back then. I suspect dele might be more well known there too? I hope so because it's really really good and I love it!! I wish they would've made more seasons, the concept of this story is so clever and unique and the two leads have wonderful dynamic. I really recommend it, it's a gem. Smoking is a little brutal but my goodness, it has the most beautiful found family bonds.
Alice in borderland
Giri/haji
Alice in borderland, so so good. Very popular since it's a big production, I'm sure I don't need to explain it. I'm so stoked for season two. Giri/haji is actually british japanese, it takes place in london and tokyo, they switch between talking english and japanese a lot. It's a crime drama involving mafia and there are cool swords and lgbtq+ storylines
Cdrama
I mean. Do I have to say it. The Untamed. The untamed!! It's been almost two years since I first watched it but wangxian still hold me captive, what can I say.
Go ahead
Guardian
Detective L
Go ahead is a comfort watch, definitely. Really sweet and funny unusual family constellation and a slow burn romance. Guardian kinda gave me Torchwood vibes, I don't know why. I'm a bit disappointed with how they handled the story in the end, it felt a bit rushed and idk I would've made a few different choices in the story telling but aside from that, really fun modern fantasy, really gay.
Detective L, now this one I love so much!!!! Featuring the actor from guardian as detective Luo Fei, early 1930s in shanghai. It's very obviously inspired by sherlock holmes, but he's actually a likable character. His assistant is policewoman Xiaman, the first female detective at this station and she is badass!!!! Their romance is subtle and really adorable and sweet, but foremost they have a wonderful friendship dynamic. It's funny and silly and they bicker and tease eachother a lot. The crime cases are so well written and the costumes/settings/visuals are just 10/10 . I don't think many people have seen Detective L so I need to give it a bit of a boost :)
Ah I probably forgot some dramas, but those are the ones I could think of. If you wanna know more about any of these hmu ! Or send me an ask, or anything. I do appreciate it <3

Guess who’s back with another tier list!
So I found another Black Lagoon tier list, this one including both Fabiola and Ginji, and this time I decided to go a different route with the list. Maybe some time I will use it to make a new, actual tier list, but today I decided to talk about probably one of the most confusing things about Black Lagoon (especially in the anime): the language barrier!
...So basically this list is just what languages the characters are speaking based on what I picked up on over the past decade of being a fan of this series.
This list was inspired by the fact that people watching the anime tend to be very confused on what languages the characters are actually speaking because unfortunately there is no perfect dub of Black Lagoon that actually shows what characters are actually speaking at any given time. Don’t get me wrong, still one of the best English anime dubs of all time, I’m in full agreement of that, but both the Japanese and English dubs of this anime fall apart when the language barrier becomes a key component in the series. And honestly it’s not their fault. I imagine translating this over to anime must have been hell for both dubs.
One important thing to mention: I do not claim that this is 100% accurate. This is what I’ve picked up on as I read the manga and watched the show, but obviously there may be other languages these characters speak that either I missed or was just never really addressed in the series. Also in several places I filled in the blanks myself because, well, obviously English isn’t going to be the first language for, for example, Ibraha.
I also remember reading in a few places that it was confirmed that English is a common language in Roanapur, but I cannot find the official source that said this. This is one of the reasons why I’m not claiming that this is 100% accurate, because while I do think this is probably what was intended for the story, no proof means no proof at the end of the day. But it’s also worth noting that--spoilers btw--the United States basically runs the city behind the scenes, so that’s something to keep in mind.
Another reason why I’m not claiming that this is 100% accurate is because human beings are fallible and as shown in some of my corrections below I know I’ve made a few mistakes here and there in the list, and there could be more that I’m missing or that I’ve got wrong. At the end of the day, this list is not to be seen as a definitive answer to the question of “What languages do these characters speak?” but rather something to look at to get a better understanding of some of the more confusing parts of Black Lagoon wherever language is a key component in the story.
One final note: at one point I refer to the main mob bosses of Roanapur as the Big Four. This is just a name I came up with to describe the balance of power among the four mob bosses, so it’s not an official name as far as I’m personally aware. I figured I should point that out to clear up any confusion.
So with that being said, here’s the breakdown. Expect lots of spoilers.
Revy speaks English, and a small handful of words or phrases in Cantonese (as mentioned in The Wired Red Wild Card), and that seems to be it. She is the most likely person to tell some to speak English when they speak another language to her, or to just say that she doesn’t speak whatever language they’re speaking. In the Japan arc especially, if you’re reading the manga or watching the Japanese dub, it’s clear that she doesn’t understand what most of the Japanese characters are saying. Canonically the vendor she has a shouting match with is actually shouting at her to speak Japanese and she thinks he’s insulting her (and her being unable to talk to the vendor is why Rock goes back and forth between them in the first place to talk about the fixed game), she never actually communicates with Ginji or the kids verbally (she talks to them, but they don’t understand each other’s words), when Rock asks her if she and Ginji can work together in the anime’s English dub when they enter the bowling alley he’s actually asking if they can communicate (Revy basically says when the action starts, they’ll be in sync without needing to talk to each other), and the dude who’s like “I GIVE UP, SERIOUSLY, I GIVE UP” is actually desperately trying to say he gives up in English. Also if you’re only familiar with the English dub, this video is a great example of why this arc is so confusing for everybody, and why the English dub was like “Fuck it, we’re not bothering with the language barrier subplot.”
Benny speaks English. He’s also Jewish, so it’s possible he may know Hebrew or another Semitic language.
Eda speaks English. She’s a CIA agent who claims to be from Alabama and is shown to be very patriotic when in CIA mode. Not that I’m saying this automatically means she doesn’t know any other language, but I haven’t seen any proof that she does.
Lotton... is mostly speculation based on everyone else, particularly Sawyer and Shenhua. I don’t even think he has an official nationality, he just... exists.
Sawyer speaks English. She is British and her name is of English origin. It is possible she speaks a Chinese dialect as well since she seems to do jobs for the Triad and befriends Shenhua, but she seems to be more freelance than a member of the Triad so this isn’t very clear.
Rowan is also mostly speculation. His name is of Irish origin, his last name is likely Pigeon, and Revy can understand him.
Chief Watsup is the chief of police in Roanapur and is the only recurring character in the show who is actually Thai. He can communicate with both Revy and Balalaika, so whether or not he speaks English depends heavily on whether or not Revy and Balalaika speak Thai (and given that Revy says in The Wired Red Wild Card that she only speaks English and a tiny bit of Cantonese, it’s more likely that he knows English).
Yukio and Ginji speak Japanese and do not appear to speak English. It is ignored in the English dub of the anime, but everywhere else it is often brought up that Revy can’t understand what they’re saying and they can’t understand what Revy is saying. To add on to what I mentioned above in Revy’s section, also consider that Yukio curiously asks Rock if Revy is Japanese when they first meet, with the thought in mind that the first thing Yukio and Ginji see when they first meet Rock and Revy is Revy shouting in English at a Japanese vendor who is yelling at her to speak Japanese.
Mr. Kageyama obviously speaks Japanese, and I assume he speaks English as well as he seems to be able to speak to both Dutch and Balalaika, the latter of whom is confirmed to not know Japanese.
Chaka canonically speaks both Japanese and English. Not only can he and Revy understand each other, but being able to speak English is one of the things he brags about to Revy when they first meet, saying something along the lines of “Can’t run a place like this without being able to speak English.”
Takenaka obviously speaks Japanese, more than likely speaks English as he’s able to communicate with Revy, and likely speaks Arabic as he has allied himself with Ibraha.
Ibraha obviously would have Arabic as his first language and he presumably speaks English as well (and possibly French as he’s from Lebanon, but this isn’t relevant). The important thing is that he does NOT know Japanese, because it is implied that THIS is the reason why he gets angry out of nowhere during the interrogation. Takenaka and Rock are speaking in Japanese during the interrogation (signified by a change in font in the manga, which would only be important if the language barrier is important to the scene) and Ibraha interrupts by saying something along the lines of “Even I know this is no longer an interrogation!”
All of the canonically English-speaking cast can understand Roberta, Garcia, and Fabiola, whose first language is obviously Spanish. Rock and Fabiola both act as interpreters in different points of the series. It’s also worth noting that Lovelace is obviously of English origin, which suggests to me that the Lovelace family in particular has a very ethnically diverse background.
Rico communicates with Revy and Eda, but judging by his name he probably can also speak Spanish (or possibly Portuguese, but Spanish is more likely as there are many Spanish speakers in town).
Balalaika and Boris obviously speak Russian, but they can communicate with the English-speaking Lagoon Company as well as Roberta.
Hansel and Gretel are Romanian, can communicate with several English-speaking characters including Revy and Eda, and are working for the Italians.
Verrocchio obviously speaks Italian, and presumably English as well as he’s part of the Big Four of Roanapur (this again ties into the idea that English is a common language in Roanapur). Also where IS Ronnie the Jaws? Or Abrego for that matter? This list said “All Characters.” False advertising smh
Bao is Vietnamese, but often speaks to characters that don’t speak Vietnamese (e.g. Revy).
Mr. Chang would likely speak Cantonese as a leading figure of the Hong Kong Triad and would likely know Mandarin as well. He can communicate with Revy, who according to The Wired Red Wild Card only knows bits and pieces of Cantonese and likely not enough to hold a whole conversation. He is also the CIA’s lapdog, so unless Eda speaks Cantonese they are probably talking to each other in English.
Shenhua is from Taiwan and as such would most likely speak Taiwanese Mandarin. She speaks with Revy who makes fun of her for her thick accent and way of speaking when she speaks English. She also might speak Cantonese as well since she works for the Hong Kong Triad.
Ahbe from the WWII flashback obviously speaks German.
Sir Alfred the old Nazi fuck would also speak German, but he’s able to talk to Dutch over the phone and he has American Neo-Nazis doing his bidding so he likely speaks English as well. He is also apparently living in Spain so it’s possible he might also speak Spanish.
Caxton and Yolanda speak English as they are constantly speaking with known English speakers throughout their appearances. Caxton in particular is about as ‘Murican as it gets without being a negative stereotype. It is unknown if they know any other language.
Jane is almost always speaking with English speakers. She is from India, so she likely also speaks Hindi. She is also part of an international team of counterfeiters, so it’s likely she knows other languages as well. After I made this tier list I remembered she also speaks German at one point and I think Theo was also from Germany, so she probably speaks German fluently as well, but I’m not redoing this list.
Leigharch speaks drugs... and presumably English and Irish as well.
Rock pretty much knows every language that ever existed in the history of mankind. He is basically the go to guy to translate anything. That being said, Japanese and English are the languages he’s most fluent in.
Dutch knows English, and--spoilers for L’homme Sombre btw--probably French as well, and also probably one of the many languages spoken in Burkina Faso, especially if he was born there (which I sadly didn’t think about until after I made the list). This arc is still ongoing in the manga, and more than anything I’m just excited to see Dutch's backstory being explored. It was long overdue. (Now we just gotta hope that the same happens for Benny.)
As I mentioned in that caveat, Roanapur is in Thailand, and it’s possible the people living in Roanapur may know Thai, but actual local Thai citizens are a rarity in Black Lagoon (with Chief Watsup being the only recurring Thai character), and American influence is so strong in the city that it’s probably the reason why people drive on the right side of the road with steering wheels on the left side, in a country where people drive on the left, and why US currency is accepted along with Thai currency, so that’s worth pointing out.

Vent: A Disgrace to Europe.
This is going to be another serious post. Due to its content, and my own anxieties surrounding the situation, I won't be posting anything else today after this. No photoshop btw this time.
30 years ago, we saw the dissolution of the United Soviet Socialist Republic with the resignation of Mikhail Gorbachev and the disbandment of the regime. It was a fight to get that point, with KGB coups and political civil unrest throughout the nation of Russia. When it was done, however, an age of freedom and interconnection not previously seen in the nation quickly swooped in and provided Russia and the rest of the world with a: democratic, independent, informational and beneficial intercontinental connection (thanks, internet).
In the time that these connections weren't around, genocide, famine and tyranny reigned across the Soviet Union undeterred by international interference. Among these tragedies was 'Holodomor,' the Stalinist strategic famine imposed on the Ukrainian Soviets. Why? Well, not much is known in documentation, but what is known is that it was an intentional culling with the intent of Russo-domination and a singular ideology. A cultural genocide with the intent of expansion and power.
Today here in Canada, Ukrainian survivors and families of Holodomor strongly connect with the Western world in solidarity for what happened long ago. The aforementioned dissolution of the Soviet Republic simply reinforced our connection with a nation oppressed by an authoritarian regime intent on ascertaining power.
In the years of diplomacy and work that the world has built up to never again see the light of conflict like the World Wars, or the tension of the Cold War again, Russia and their disgraceful 20yr Emperor Putin has taken it upon themselves to squash the peace we've worked for. Former KGB agent Putin and the nationalist Russian census have yearned for the return of the Soviet Union, and they're starting with their heritage's closest relative (that wants nothing to do with them anymore).
Wasn't always like this. My uncle of Ukrainian background once tolerated Russia in spite of their impact on his family. Since 2012, and I'm assuming especially now, the same can no longer be said. Russia is a disgrace to Europe.
So long as that dictator is still in power, peace in Europe is now but a stillborn dream. Unfortunately, Russia carved a ways for him to stick around for whatever remaining years he has to make the world a shittier place.
And if that wasn't enough? Chinese tensions with Taiwan are escalating too as their air force intrudes Taiwanese air zones, just-in-time to make the international situation surrounding Ukraine all the worse. As time goes on, things are looking progressively more dire for world peace, thanks to the tight grip that these nations have on their power-hungry, radical minds.
As if Chinese influence wasn't enough of an issue, in areas like America, things are a lot more domestic for the continent. In a post-Trump North America, where elections are meddled with by an infiltrating Russian influence, we've got numbnuts like Tucker Carlson blatantly spewing off pro-Putin BS like no tomorrow. Ukrainian dictator this! Putin's not invading that! Of course, seeing as Trump was Putin's lil shmuggims, every one Trumpoid in America is going to forget the history of the nation and the threat they pose to democracy, in favour of blindly supporting whatever Mr. Combover has to say. Alas, once the tragedies of Ukraine are blatant, Carlson back-peddles on his crap likely to keep his sponsors with him. It's a load of disingenuous bullshit.
The situation in Ukraine is nuanced. No one party is innocent as we look back to what started this mess. National politics in the nation were unstable with Russian identity/Ukrainian independence for a while, and the situation has been difficult to resolve diplomatically. But nothing, nothing warrants what is happening now; The innocent lives and integrity of a nation, being forced to the mercy of Russia's bombings and assault. It's an invasion, not a military operation. Let's not sugar coat their crap.
I pray for the safety of the Ukrainians, and their ability to persevere through the oppression of those god damned attackers. Godspeed, Ukraine, love from Canada.

1. That’s quite a kiss for a proper, serious historical. But then I suppose you don’t hire a Taiwanese star if you want really bad kissing.
2. Vic Chou was my first ever drama crush as he was the ML of my first ever drama Mars (still one of my all time faves.) Back in 2006, before some tumblr users were probably even born, I read the manga, wanted to see if there was an anime and discovered there was a live action instead. I found it and the rest is history. If someone told 2006 me that 15 years later I’d be swooning over him as a future Song emperor...eh why not?
3. I find it interesting how they stick a somewhat cliche fairy tale romance into a pretty serious period drama only to turn it inside out in a very dark way. If this wasn’t a situation where we know Liu Er eventually becomes Dowager Empress and dies of old age, I’d be up for the narrative contained in the first episode because it has such a lovely dark tinge. I am not even talking about the fact that Zhao Heng is love’s young dream to her but not a great husband to his actual wife - she has just given birth to a son and heir and secured him a place as the Crown Prince and while he is unfailingly proper and polite to her, he has zero warmth towards her or hesitation to bring a new wife in when she’s barely recovered from childbirth. (Though it’s probably a very realistic set-up when he and his official wife were an arranged marriage; propriety is the most you can expect - to wish for love and warmth, let alone monogamy, is a pipe dream.)  No, I am talking how it’s sort of a fairy tale set up. She is a peasant girl who fishes out a bona fide royal prince out of the river.
Tumblr media
And not just any royal prince, but a gorgeous one to boot (I have never found someone who looks like that in a river, dammit!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And she, a peasant girl from Shu (and one that already gave birth too though I believe miscarried, but definitely no pristine high born virgin) wins his heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And he brings her with him to the capital and not just that but literally asks the Emperor for the permission to make her a wife.
Tumblr media
And is loving and devoted and sweet and spends all his free time with her.
Tumblr media
Sure, he already has an official wife (and possibly concubines) but it’s a polygamous society so Liu Er has seriously hit the fairy tale jackpot. I did crack up like mad when he tells her this though:
Tumblr media
“Yeah, we will be together forever. You, me, my wife, and all my concubines.”
Anyway, so far this is basically Song Dynasty Cinderella. Except his child gets stabbed in her care and of course the Emperor condemns her to death and despite the Prince’s pleading she is given a cup of poisonous wine and that’s the end for her (or not since we know it’s ep 1.) Because a peasant girl with no family or backing would not walk into a happy fairy tale with a handsome prince but get tripped by one of a million dangers in the capital...and I love that.
Tumblr media
The pacing of ep 1 was all over the place btw. I know this is 61 eps but I am wondering if it was cut down even further from 70 or 80 and they just cut down in the beginning. Because we are thrown in medias res which is fine even if my knowledge of the Song Dynasty is basically wikipedia-based; if this was a show set in medieval Russia or England or France of Italy, I wouldn’t be as lost as I am. The medias res thing I actually like. But also the amount of stuff ep 1 cowers is something we normally get a dozen eps for - we get the earthquake, the Emperor picking a Crown Prince, the secret that the Emperor killed his brother, our ML going to walk, getting caught in an earthquake, being presumed dead, being saved, falling for FL, bringing her back, his baby being assassinated and FL drinking poisoned wine. I mean - that’s more plot than entire actual dramas have! The actors are all excellent, the cinematography is beautiful, and honestly even one ep and with such a pace I already see them as fully living and breathing people which is very impressive, but it feels like a survey course or maybe a Cliffs’ Notes version. I really hope this is sort of the prologue and the pace calms down - otherwise they are gonna be able to cover the entire Song Dynasty in 61 eps with room left over.
