Hawthorn

Did anyone else get majorly creeped out by Hawthorn even before he got all evil n shit? I just feel like I should like him, but I can’t. Narratively speaking, he’s amazing. A dragon weighed with the guilt of the enslavement of two tribes, exiled from his homeland and thoroughly alone, only to be stripped of his sanity by his only friend: The Breath of Evil. It’s an awesome storyline that only gets more interesting the more you think about it, and the way Hawthorn subtly tries to convince the protagonists to drink the Breath of Evil tea that he makes is wonderfully written. The only thing is, while I want to hate him as a villain, I just hate him because he’s freaky. He doesn’t regret his decision at all. Another thing about him that I realised after I read the book again is that he has a major obsession with Sequoia. He talks about her constantly, and he even has a wooden carving of her in his house. It just feels like instead of trying to heal, he’s formed an unhealthy parasocial relationship with the idea of his queen. I don’t know. A lot of fans love him but I just can’t. He’s so creepy, but not in a good way. I want my book villains to scare me by being evil, insane, and genuine.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT????
