Something I love about Rand is how unspecial he is

He doesn’t have any real merit or skill besides writing (and even then he never even had an ending for the campaign) and being just a slightly faster runner than the others

He’s just so average. He’s not special at all. He’s not part of the Hive like Rolan is, he didn’t learn magic and get a second chance at life like Kian did, hell he didn’t even realize the town was shaped like a hive

He never applied himself, he never did anything of note, he lived his whole life in the same town and he was just so ordinary

Does he get upset about that? Does he hate how he never did anything? Never even tried? Does he hate how normal he is while his friends are so extraordinary? Does he hate them because they’re everything he isn’t?

PD: William. I LOVE Dakota but William is just such an interesting character to me and the way he’s evolved throughout the campaign is sooooo OUGH idk man words are hard but HE (if I could have, I would have picked Ashe tho she’s so babygirl)

BitB: Rand. Hands down. I DONT EVEN KNOW WHY. He’s just OUGH he entered my brain and decided that he’s gonna stay around for a whILE. And as much as I love Kian, I just- idk I’m sad about the way he was played idk

Apotheosis: Rumi 5000000% bro nonbinary rep? That falls in love with a little silly guys who only knows how to talk about rocks and lizards? Yes.

Fated: Bra’ad my precious baby boy. I cry over him dude I love him I miss him he deserves the entire earth I could write essays about him and be sobbing by the end of all of them

Convergence: Alastyr. If I could I would have picked strangle but alas he’s an npc. Honestly I remember jack shit abt convergence and should give it a relisten but yeah

My favorite character from the main 3 from each campaign (That ive watched)

Riptide: Its a cross between Jay and Gill. Dont get me wrong, Chips great and all, but Gillion is silly fish and Jay is literally me. I would probably pick Hill but Jay is a VERY close second.

PD: Hands down Dakota. I love the guy. Im only on s2e28 so im not fully caught up but still. I used to love Wiwi so much and I still love him but Dakota is my boy.

Apotheosis: Rumi. Rumi is so just. They are described as perfect so much. They literally made a sex cult, in one night, that had 21 people.

BITB: This ones hard. I love them all. I think Kian and Rand are tied fir an EXTREMELY close second but Rolan is my boy. Like hes so silly and buggy and boy. Love the guy.

the amount of people i know who have said jay became their favorite riptide pc overtime or since the beginning is seriously not a coincidence. jay has clear and compelling character motivations and her place and role in riptide is essential. literally theyd all be fucking dead without jay ferin okay.

vyncent as a character is so fucking interesting to me because he starts off clueless and a little selfish but grows and develops to form his opinions of prime around his friends. that means so fucking much to me. every action he makes is clearly because of people he cares about. its what drives him. the conflict with X in s2 specifically shows this because hes grown. he goes from being virion sol wanting to just get home and save flora to being vyncent sol who just wants to get ashe home. fuck man

and of course, rolan deep. i dont wanna spoil rolans role in bitb for the unitiated who havent seen it but please fucking do. its seriously tragic okay. id go tk argue hes the main character of the pcs in that campaign because of what he means to the story in particular

and fuck man i cant wait to see my boy emizel in action.

Favorite PC from each of the boys?: This one is not going to be surprising at all. Alastyr Cross for Bizly, Kasper for Grizzly, William for Charlie, and Rolan for Condi. What can I say, I like convergence. I also love Flynn but my Flynn is almost entirely headcanons. Though a lot of them it was toss up between BitB and convergence.

Did the fandom give you any wildly incorrect assumptions?: With pd I thought they were less little loser boys and less pathetic. I also thought Will was 10x more emo than he actually is.

15. What WIP are you taking into next year with you?

Pretty much all of them lol. I have a few in particular I'm excited for, like a bitb aftermath fic that is so far sitting around 5k words (which is a lot for me) and a riptide superhero au i've been working on for about a year since I read Tommyinnit's Clinic For Supervillians. Also a fic where Gillion goes feral during a meltdown and accidentally hurts Chip and Jay, as well as a polypd vigilante au fic based heavily on some mha fics my friend keeps recommending to me. She closed the door with a slam and slid down to the floor, running a hand down her face. He reached up to flick the light on with his shotgun.

He looked around at the room.

“Well,” She muttered to Racheal, who had been hovering behind him for the walk over. “Time to make this place… livable.”

Chip was left staring at a short person with shoulder-length green hair, black armor, and a giant sword.

To reiterate: What the fuck?

“I AM TIDESTRIDER, HERO OF THE DEEP, AND I COMMAND YOU TO STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AT ONCE!” the Hero proclaimed loudly. They (He? She? No, best to go with ‘they’) waited a beat then stepped forward. The action shook Chip out of its trance and forced it back to the real world, which, unfortunately for Chip, - also known as the villian Houlding - meant hanging upside down in a museum getting caught stealing a magical artifact by a superhero brandishing a giant fucking sword at it.

The Champion stared deep into the blue eyes of the redhead with the bow, growling and pinning her against the wall. She held her hands out in a placating gesture, speaking in some foriegn, dry sounding language. The Champion narrowed her eyes, almost insulted. As if they were going to fall for the fake surrender. That was one of the first tricks he was taught to defend against in his training.

He felt something touch his shoulder suddenly and he jerked away, raking a clawed hand against the abdomen of the redhead and growling. They turned around to see the scrawny boy, looking terrified and betrayed.

The Champion bared her many rows of shark-like teeth. Easy prey.

Okay. So they both knew his face and name, he’d apparently stayed the night, and the heroes didn't want him anymore. His breaths were coming out shakily and ragged, his heartbeat pounding in his ears. Wraith reached up and ran a hand through her hair and she whimpered, melting into the touch even as she struggled to breath.

“Dakota, look at me, please,” Wraith said gently. He was so different from how he was in fights, it almost threw Dakota off. When she didn't look up to Wraith, Variant gently placed a hand under her chin and guided her head upwards.

He could pull away at any time. They all knew he could. They all knew he wouldn't, couldn't. She needed this.

She needed them.

3. Favorite musical artist / group you started listening to this year?

My music taste is not a great barometer since I generally listen to podcasts at work instead of music now and what music I do listen to is often showtunes (for fuck’s sake Trai), but let’s go with my very late in the year visit to a CD store yesterday. (Yes, I said a CD store; we have one of those ‘round these parts.) Lo, the spoils:

Queen, Sting, and Springsteen are artists I’m going to start becoming familiar with, as I’m reading a Freddie Mercury biography and visited a Springsteen exhibit a few months ago, and both of these things have made me realize, uh, I’ve got a lot of gaps. (And why Sting? Because of Constantine. Yes, I’m that sad.) Elton John is also on the list to become more familiar with.

6. Episode of tv or webisode that defined the year for you?

“Therapy Patrol” (Doom Patrol, Season 1, Episode 7). It was literally everything, everything I could have wanted from the show. Doom Patrol is a show about trauma, and I’ve watched way too many shows that only pull out their characters’ traumas when it’s convenient, or pretended like characters are magically healed when it’s no longer interesting to the writers to explore what they’ve been through. This episode of Doom Patrol is literally the characters sitting down and realizing they have to talk about and deal with their shit before it destroys them. Even with that, it still manages to be respectful of the characters who don’t want to talk, who get to talk about their experiences later with the people they trust. It’s a Rashomon-style episode that uses that style to hilarious effect, and Brendan Fraser and Matt Bomer get to do particularly emotional work. Larry’s speech (cw for some brutal talk of period-typical homophobia) was 1000% career best work for Matt that had to have been very emotionally difficult given how close it treads to his own background, and he knocked it out of the fucking park. (Also, April Bowlby’s comic timing [”it was a LITERAL FURNACE!!!!!”] is fucking phenomenal.)

11. Something you want to do again next year?

Conventions! BroadwayCon 2019 was the first convention I had been to in ten years and it was an absolute fucking delight. I intend to go back next month if I can. Folded into that will also be cosplay. I did a very lowkey Donald from The Boys in the Band cosplay for BroadwayCon that I’ll be bringing back, and I’m working on a Larry Trainor cosplay for any comic conventions that come up. Characters I would love to cosplay in the future are Roger from Rent, John Constantine, and both Elliot and Darlene Alderson from Mr. Robot.

13. How was your birthday this year?

I had to work on my birthday itself, but my birthday “thing” that I did was taking myself to Torch Song on Broadway on the 5th (the day before it closed) and then meeting with my friend Sarah afterwards to get some cookies at Schmackary’s. Torch Song is a really emotional show and I cried a lot, but the performances were uniformly great, and Sarah and I talk theater a lot so it was nice to have someone to discuss it with after (with some really delicious cookies that made up for the crying). Her presents to me (which she did not have to get me at all!) were a book a friend of hers wrote and a framed picture of us from the Boys in the Band stage door, which doubled as a BITB in-joke because she put it in a silver frame engraved with “something personal” and the date we went to that performance, because Michael’s gift to Harold is a picture of himself in a silver frame that Harold says is inscribed with something personal. (I had also given her a BITB in-joke gift for her birthday last year, so I’m assuming this cycle is just going to perpetuate until we wring it dry.)

14. Favorite book you read this year?

Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin (+ the entire series), a close second being Less by Andrew Sean Greer. Tales was one of the best reading experiences I’ve had in a long time and I’ve gushed about that elsewhere (and on here…). Less won the Pulitzer so it hardly needs me to promote it, but seriously, that book was so good and I feel like that Pulitzer has the potential to turn people off. Don’t let it. It’s an incredibly funny and moving book about a gay man turning fifty and looking back over his love life and career, as well as having to confront his privilege and learn not to take himself and his setbacks so seriously. I’m still thinking about it months after finishing it and I definitely want to reread it and the Tales series (and the rest of Armistead Maupin’s work) in the future.

15. What’s a bad habit you picked up this year?

I had been getting a bit too invested in not being noticed or asked after by people who I had looked at as friends (the bad habit), so I picked up a better one and just started unfollowing on Facebook the people who were causing me stress. I had barely done that in the past and I felt better once I had, now that I wasn’t letting these people take up space in my brain. Learning to let go of people like that and to focus on the people I felt a more genuine attachment to instead really led to some rewarding conversations that I cherish.

24. Did you keep any New Year’s Resolutions?

Cosplaying was one, so as simple as my Donald “cosplay” was, taking that to BroadwayCon was one, and the neat thing was that Sarah and I doing BITB cosplay possibly inspired others to do it; a girl got in touch with us after saying we showed her that people would be interested in it.

On a more personal note, I came out to friends and family. For the last several years I had been feeling more and more like my future partner wouldn’t necessarily be a man, but I’d thought of myself as straight for a long time, and I didn’t know how to deal with what I was feeling. A friend made some remarks on her podcast that made me aware that there was more variation to bi identity than I thought, because I’d internalized a lot of bad shit from biphobic media and bi erasure in the general culture. I started making tentative steps at looking at stuff online, and after telling the first person I ever did (you), I told two of my other close friends several months later, which put me on the path to settling on pansexual as a label. When I looked back at certain things in my past, I realized that I’d always been noticing women in addition to men, but that gender was never really a factor in the attraction at all, so that’s the label I feel comfortable with for now. I understand myself a lot better now, and friends of mine have outright said to me that I seem a lot more comfortable and confident in the last few years. At the start of last year I was an emotional disaster area where this topic was concerned, so to be ending the year (and the decade) out to most people in my life and feeling comfortable enough to claim that identity feels good and better than I have before.

For Rolan: I love the funeral, Condi pops off and is incredible in that scene I adore it so much. I also love the scene with him and Rand at the tree when Rolan remembers all the things that add up to make it clear that he isn’t the original and that he isn’t human. It’s so so well done I love it

For Kian: his song to Becky and the whole scene with her under the tree, it’s where we see him act the most like the real him and I love it. Also the work that Grizz puts into the song is perfect, I just love that song and I wish it was released for public it’s amazing

For Rand: so many of his, I love him so much and he’s my favorite of the boys, but I do really love the scene where he’s looking at the map of Galloway and his dnd books and seeing that the town looks like a brain is so—that scene gives me goosebumps every time I love it. Bizly figuring things out is such a peak dnd moment where the dots are connecting and I just love it :)

Gilion: TAIL. Also I really like the orange markings bc ✨contrast✨also he’s a short king. Not a headcanon but I REALLY love the man bun. Boob window is awesome, until it becomes overly sexualized :/ also man’s absolutely has sharp teeth

Chip: I really love the new design. Wouldn’t change a thing except people keep forgetting about his PINKY. Also SCARS. Man’s has SO MANY SCARS. Honestly this kind of goes for everyone. I love scars <3

Jay: soot rings under her eyes from goggles/ grease smudges. She tinkers all day, she’s gonna be messy :3 also she would have so many flyaway hairs dude. Also if the corset was a little more functional and study rather than just being for aesthetics.

Bitb boys: I really love the transing of genders. In every direction lmao (although ftm Kian is probably one of my favorite things). Also Kian has so many shinies (jewelry). Rand wears his hair in a half up ponytail thing. Also I kinda enjoy the idea of him having a slight lazy eye, but maybe I’m just projecting ajfbsjfnofa. I really like the idea of them having friendship bracelets but let’s be real- they all would have broken within a year.

As for dislikes: I don’t think there’s anything I super don’t like. I’m very chill when it comes to headcanons, and if you’re excited about something, I’m probably also going to be excited
