maybe it’s just the books i’ve been selecting from him (no country for old men, blood meridian, the road), but cormac mccarthy always seems to gravitate toward stories that cover a lot of land. vast stories. everything i’ve read from him has been about a journey told through vignettes. the setting always has more vivid description than any one character (except for The Judge, but he is a symbol for all manner of things and he’s based on a historical figure, so it makes sense he is actually described well enough you can see him. it also makes him scarier that he is in such sharp clarity whilst The Kid is blurred). usually his main characters are left entirely to the imagination, outside of little descriptions like The Boy scribbling fangs on his face mask with crayons, yet the world is described in a way that is almost painterly. he uses language like a paintbrush. it is so beautiful.

the road feels a lot gentler than his other stories did. quieter. blood meridian immediately gets in your face. it’s visceral and messy. everything is oversaturated and blood soaked. the road… it feels like you are watching a movie in black and white.

it’s thematically similar to No Country for Old Men imo. The Boy is desensitized to the darkness and violence of their world, while The Man is mourning a world that once existed but no longer does. The Boy doesn’t mourn because he’s only ever known the world as it is now. on the surface it is a post-apocalypse story, but i think it might actually be about the universal experience of growing too old to connect to the world, and mourning a way of life/world that you can never go back to. the past is a place The Man used to live, a home country he cannot return to. inevitably everyone will have to endure that, it has nothing to do with the apocalypse.

there are all of these scenes where they happen upon corpses and The Boy looks at them and asks practical questions (“should we look for food?”) and The Man tells him to move along. he reflects on his childhood (all these scenes with colour, contrasted with their grey and dead world) and you are forced to see the difference between his childhood and the childhood The Boy is afforded which is altogether uglier and sadder. this must be what it feels like like raising a child in the modern world, especially for one who has seen so much change.

that’s just my opinion so far. i’m not even 100 pages in yet so take it with a grain of salt.

Katniss is such an unreliable narrator. She says "Then something unexpected happens. At least, I don't expect it because I don't think of District 12 as a place that cares about me" girl you deliver strawberries to the Mayor, you hunt and trade for the district, when you fell at Prim being chosen someone caught you, when you went to Prim people parted for you, when you volunteered EVERYONE stopped. Idk how to tell you but I think you're a pillar of the community.
