if you can stomach it i would recommend watching the body cam footage of the sonya massey killing, i'll try to describe it but it's hardly possible. you can't truly understand the type of extreme, completely volatile aggression that happens with cops if you haven't seen it, and it's captured here very harrowingly.

several officers are in her house, calmly talking with her about her id and vehicle papers for some time. it's routine administrative stuff, no acute danger or stress whatsoever. one of them tells her to take her pot off the stove, remarking that they don't need a fire in the house now, she walks over into the kitchen and complies. he suddenly backs off towards the front door despite already being several feet away. she asks him where he's going, he says "away from your hot, steaming water." she repeats "my hot, steamin' water?" in an amused tone. then adds "i rebuke you in the name of jesus," in a similar tone while pouring the water down the sink. the atmosphere is completely calm, you might even say amiable.

she's at this point still separated from the cops by her kitchen aisle and several feet of additional distance. the cop prompts her to repeat what she said, she repeats her reply about rebuking him in the name of jesus [edit: i didn't phrase this right in the original post; this phrase is not really a joke but rather used similarly to 'perish the thought'- ie rebuking his implication that she would harm them]. she doesn't even realise there's been a complete 180 in his head. he goes "you better fucking not, i will shoot you in your fucking face," she's stunned by the sudden abusive language for half a second, immediately he draws his gun directly at her head, she gets out a panicked "sorry!" and ducks behind the aisle, he rounds the corner into the kitchen specifically to advance right next to her, immediately fires 3 shots at her head from above at minimal distance. she's dead where she stood, or cowered rather, by the sink in her nightgown.

after a few seconds you hear the click of him turning on his body cam, saying "she came at me with a pot of boiling water." for the recording. he also nonchalantly tells his partner there's no need to get a med kit because it was a headshot. it's one of the most clear cut cases ever and it's fully recorded only because his partner did already have the body cam on throughout.

They go to a bar and someone starts getting too pushy with Gaz? Gaz could deal with it on his own but he really doesn't feel like causing a scene and this guy is just really struggling to take the hints he's giving him. John pushes himself between them and leads Gaz away with a tight hand on his shoulder. "Sergeant, with me."

They have to work with another team, the other Captain is talking to Soap and very pointedly mentioning an open space available on his team. Price knows Soap would never take it but it makes his blood boil regardless. He very shamelessly interrupts their conversation, talking over the other man. "MacTavish, Riley was looking for you. Better go find him before he kicks off, isn't known for his patience." Ghost isn't looking for Soap. Hell, Ghost isn't even bothered by the other Captain trying to offer Soap a job because Johnny would never take it but John will be damned if he lets that Captain talk to one of his men as if he isn't their Captain.

Everyone knows Ghost and Price have a weird relationship but no one really gets it, John won't hear a bad word against Simon's name and Simon isn't anyone's mutt but if John tugs on his leash, he'll bark. Simon takes a pretty brutal hit on a mission while keeping an eye on John and it leaves John enraged. "Riley, if you're gonna get killed then it'll be by my bloody hands."

The way Neil Josten switched into Nathaniel in order to process and handle the abuse and trauma of being found by his father's people and the reality of his looming death will never not fuck me up, he literally said I can't handle this but maybe the Butcher's son could. And then. And then!! The way those two versions of himself coalesce into Neil Abram Josten (legally recognised) after Nathan is dead and the truth is out? The Neil Josten we see in The Sunshine Court has all of the attachments of Neil Josten, the slow unraveling of family and care but all of the hard edges of Nathaniel, unflinching from the reality of the world he lives in and the decisions he has to make to keep his life. Nathaniel would never have stuck around long enough to care about Jean Moreau and call a hit out on his abuser. Neil would never have trusted those resources available to him (or potentially the trail it could leave) in order to deal with the problem in one brutal but efficient move. But Neil Abram Josten reforged could, would and did.
