The Good Old Days Chapter 29: A Walk of Shame Looks Good on You
A/N: Hi, friends! Look, I'm sitting here waiting for bleach to process, so I got a little time to kill. But before we get into anything fun, we need to take care of some business first. Nothing bad. It's just a little housekeeping before I leave for Michigan.
I know I said you'd be taken care of while I'm gone. Well, I lied. I thought you'd be taken care of, but I'm going to be away from my computer and away from my desk and you're going to have to wait a couple weeks until the next update, ok? I hope that's alright with you. I really did try, guys. I tried my damnedest. So, we'll be back in August. I promise. And I love you x
I’m pretty sure I left Veronica in capable hands. At least I sure as hell hope so. Once my shift came to an end, I wanted nothing more than to go home and crash. Granted, I knew I’d be up half the night, worrying about Veronica and hoping she made it home ok, but I’m sure she’ll be alright. If all else fails, she can kick ass with the best of them. And Tessa didn’t seem like the type to steal one of Veronica’s kidneys. I hope things work out with those two.
All I wanted now was to go home and crash, though. It’s been a long ass day. And a long ass night. And all I wanted was my bed. That sounded downright heavenly. And maybe a drink or two. Just a little something, something to cap off the night. It’s not like I got to have one with the Old Man. I was busy working the bar. Even though I wasn’t technically supposed to. But I digress. Still, a drink sounded nice. Both my brothers had their vices. César smoked like a chimney and I’m not sure how legal Tony’s vices were. I knew he kept them in the house, but I wasn’t going to tell anyone. I don’t think he even knew I knew.
Once I got home, I went straight into the bedroom and fell into my bed without a sound. Good. I could use about twelve hours of uninterrupted sleep. But I knew better than that. I took a quick hit from the tequila bottle and shut my eyes. In a perfect world, I wouldn’t just get that twelve hours of sleep, but I’d have something better in place of my body pillow. But I knew that wasn’t happening. Unless one of my brothers were stupid enough to try and be my little spoon. We were close, but we weren’t that close.
The next morning, I woke up to an empty house. Tony and César weren’t in their beds. Mama had already left for work. I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. The world was my oyster. At least this time, I didn’t wake up wanting to walk into oncoming traffic, so I got that going for me. And even with this new lease on life (despite me still wishing like hell that Vanessa as on the next flight home), I needed a way to kill the day before I had to go play in the Narrows.
Breakfast? Maybe I start with breakfast. And it happens to be eleven o’clock. I knew where I could get the best breakfast in the city. Just down the block. I threw my shoes on and headed toward that beautiful, bright green oasis in the middle of this concrete jungle. Dios los bendiga…I’m home. Well, I’d always feel at home in the city I loved, but this? This seemed a little more like home than I could’ve ever anticipated in my life.
“Buenos dias, niño!” Abuela greeted me. And right there. Right there was the cure for what ailed me. If only I had the energy to come here yesterday morning. Maybe I wouldn’t have been in the funk I’ve been in since a flight left JFK for Rome yesterday morning. But I digress. I still had Abuela.
“Morning,” I melted inside.
“Regular order then?” she assumed.
“Si, por favor,” I nodded, “And uh…You know how you’ve been making my horchata with…”
“Espresso in your horchata,” Abuela knew me all too well, “Of course, Frankie. I can tell when you had a rough night. I’m not going to ever say no to you and you should know better than to even think I would.”
“Sorry, Abuela,” I giggled a bit. Yep. This woman would always be the cure for whatever ailed me. In this case, it’s depression and a certain kind of homesickness I’ve never had before.
“It’s alright, mijo,” she let it go, “You seem off. And not like you went out with Tony and César last night and came home an hour after closing time. Is everything alright?”
“It’s been better,” I brushed her off, “But nothing you need to worry about.”
Because that was for me to worry about. I didn’t need to put that burden on Abuela’s shoulders. As good as a vent would probably do me, she didn’t need that. And I didn’t really feel like getting into it. Abuela had enough to take care of. And I needed a distraction more than anything. That’s half the reason why I liked coming here. I watch Abuela carefully craft my newborn baby burrito with love while I get to throw down horchata. Occasionally, I get some words of wisdom from her. It’s a good time. Besides, this food truck had more than just Abuela memories attached to it. It had…
BAM!
I felt a tiny pair of arms wrap around my waist and a face in the middle of my back, “We really need to stop running into each other like this, Frankie.”
Gracias a dios, she made it home ok. And I’m assuming with both kidneys. There’s the other memories Abuela’s food truck has…It’s where it all began again. If I never would’ve met the little spazz at my hip, who knows if I would’ve gotten my second shot with her sister? But I don’t know…I think I like her sister. Just a little bit. And…Well…She’s not too bad either. I spun Veronica around and got a decent look at her. And she looked like hell, but in the best way.
“Let’s see,” I teased her a bit, “Last night’s clothes, hair a mess, a hoody that does not belong to you, smudged mascara under your eyes…What? No broken heel, Veronica?”
“No,” Veronica rolled her eyes, “You’re mixing me up with my sister again, Frankie. That’s a Vanessa thing. I don’t wear heels. More of a platform leather boots type myself, but that’s just me.”
“Still,” I threw an arm around her, “Walks of shame look cute on you, Veronica.”
“Last night was fun,” Veronica leaned on me, stilling a drink from my horchata, “I fucking owe you.”
“For what?” I giggled, “I didn’t do anything.”
“My ass, you didn’t!” she squealed, “Dude, it’s not every day someone like Tessa walks into a bar that I just happen to be at for the night. That kind of serendipity doesn’t happen for someone like me.”
“I’d be careful about whose love story you’re poking at there, Veronica,” I argued, “Because…Uh…Didn’t we meet because of a relationship that started that very same way?”
“We met right here,” Veronica reminded me, “Because someone was too chicken shit to call Vanessa on his own and needed a wingman.”
“Call last night me paying you back,” I threw a ten on the window, “Abuela?”
“Si, Frankie?” she popped out, “Necesitas algo?”
“She does,” I ordered for her, “Before she slurps down all of my horchata.”
“I’m a thirsty bitch,” Veronica shrugged, “Sue me.”
“Gladly.”
“I got dibs on Vanessa.”
“Dammit…” I grumbled to myself, “Alright. I respectfully withdraw and I’ll just be over here doing other things. Don’t worry about me.”
“You’re just mad she’d represent me first,” Veronica laughed.
“And Abuela,” I added, “If you wanted to add extra spit to her taquitos, I wouldn’t say no.”
“Francisco!” Abuela snapped, “No! Sabes que nunca lo haría!”
“It’s a joke,” I backed off, “Just a little joke. A little ha, ha. Sorry…I know you wouldn’t.”
“Es verdad…” Abuela wrapped my burrito up and got started on Veronica’s taquitos, “Honestly, Frankie…I’m disappointed.”
“It’s alright, Abuela,” Veronica let it go, “I knew he meant it with love.”
“So,” I wondered, “What happened after you and Tessa left the Narrows?”
“We went out,” Veronica’s face lit up, “There’s a club about five blocks down from her apartment building. Her band played!”
“I didn’t know she was in a band.” But I could tell she at least played by the state of her fingers.
“I didn’t either until last night,” she swooned, “And she’s damn good at it! I’ve never seen someone jam like that. She’s much better than any of the local bands around here. Hell, at one point, I didn’t think she even needed the rest of the band. She was amazing on her own. But it’s more than just that. You should’ve seen it, Frankie. She’s…She’s too cool for me. I know I’m a pretty cool bitch, but she’s even cooler than I am.”
“Shut up,” I settled her, “There’s no way.”
“It’s true!” Veronica went on, “When we went back to her apartment, she showed me this big, beautiful bong that she blew herself! And it was so fucking pretty. It was probably a couple feet long, but it was black and hot pink and a neon green and this really pretty smoky electric blue and I have never wanted something more in my life. Dear god, it’s gorgeous. We burned one and went to sleep. No sex, no nothing. Just…Neither one of us wanted to sleep alone and Tessa wasn’t going to make me go back home. So, we didn’t. So, I laid there with her and…Frankie, I almost cried. It felt so fucking nice for a change.”
“Well, I’m happy for you, kiddo,” I kissed the top of her head, “And I’m glad I could help. But like I said. You helped me get Vanessa. Why shouldn’t you get Tessa, too?”
“I appreciate it,” Veronica threw her arms around me, “Seriously, Frankie…I’ve never had a serious girlfriend before. I’ve had casuals, but never anything serious.”
“Are you already thinking serious?” I gasped.
“Kind of…” a quick flash of red brushed across her cheeks, “But I don’t need your judgment, Mr. I’ve known Vanessa for six months and I damn near proposed to her the other night.”
“I never said there was any sort of judgment,” I assured her, grabbing her order from the window, “Gracias, Abuela.”
“De nada, cariño,” Abuela smiled, “Please. Go on. This is the most excitement I’ve gotten all morning. I’m invested.”
“I need to be getting home,” Veronica winced, “Before I end up playing into Victoria’s kidnapping fantasies, too.”
“Alright,” I hugged her tight, “And again, my offer still stands.”
“I know,” she nuzzled into me, “If Victoria becomes too much for me to handle and I can’t suppress the urge to choke her anymore, I know where you live. I know where you sleep. I know where you work when you’re working legit. And I’m more than welcome any time I want.”
“That’s my girl,” I kissed her forehead, “I love you, Veronica.”
“I love you, too, Frankie.” Don’t get me wrong. I love Vanessa dearly. But damn, having Veronica here is going to be a major help to my psyche while she’s gone. Mostly because I don’t think Veronica’s going to let me be depressed and beat myself up for letting Vanessa go to Italy. That wasn’t my decision to make. Hell, it was barely hers. Because there’s no way this doesn’t reek of Victoria’s meddling.
Instead of getting pissed like I probably should, I reveled in the fact that she was getting a whole different life experience. And if anyone could relate to what that experience was, it’d be me. My first time in Spain in my cognitive memory was the weirdest culture shock. I had grown up in New York. I knew nothing about life there except from what Mama and my brothers told me. But I had nothing firsthand. Until I was processing everything at four years old. Getting on the plane, making a layover in London, wondering why the hell everyone talked so weird. It’s not that I didn’t know the language. Mama made damn sure of that. To the point where I remember her bitching at Tony or César for speaking to me in English.
But Vanessa wasn’t dealing with Spain. Vanessa was in Italy. I didn’t even know if she was there yet. She had to be. Unless she had that same layover last a little longer than what she’d like. Than what I’d like. But they happen. It’s not like we had control over that. Still, I went home to an empty apartment and thumbed through the TV, hoping there’d be something on. Something to hold my attention long enough while I ate. I mean, Willow was on, but I’d rather not watch Willow for the millionth time just because it was on.
Ring, ring.
Huh…It’s not often the phone rings. I got up from the couch and grabbed it, just to shut it up, “Bueno…”
“Buona sera, amore mio…” a soft, husky voice greeted me on the other end. And I’m not too proud to admit I damn near broke down, “Quanto mi manchi così…”
“Vanessa…?” I could hardly get her name out of my mouth.
“Hi, baby…” her voice broke a bit. It’s good to know I’m not alone here, but that was one of the worst sounds in the world. I couldn’t tell if those were tears of joy or tears of pain. I’m going to go out on a limb, cross my fingers, and say it’s joy.
“Fuck, it does my heart good to hear your voice again,” I gushed, “Are you alright? You doing ok?”
“Ok as I can be, I suppose,” Vanessa reported, “I mean…It’d be nice if I was there with you, but…”
“I know, I know,” I settled her, “Can’t get what we want. But look on the bright side. We got this.”
“Yeah, we do…” I swear to God, I heard a smile in that girl’s voice. And in that moment, I knew everything was going to be ok.

GOBLINS ➝ BECHLOE.
TAGGING ➝ Chloe Beale, Beca Mitchell.
LOCATION ➝ Beca, Chloe and Amy’s apartment.
TIME FRAME ➝ 2/10, afternoon.
WARNINGS ➝ None.
NOTES ➝ Beca comes home to find Chloe and five new babies.
CHLOE BEALE
Although they’d smiled politely and thanked the woman who had come into the clinic mid-morning with a box of newborn, abandoned kittens, everybody had actually been kind of mad about it. For all she knew, their mom had simply gone to find food, and would return to find her kittens gone, but they were here now, and there was nothing they could do to reverse her actions—if the cat had returned, she would be long gone by now, and her babies wouldn’t smell like her anymore. This, of course, meant that they now had five helpless kittens to provide twenty-four hour care for, and without considering the shoebox she lived in, Chloe had jumped at the chance to volunteer.
After checking them all over, they all seemed to be in generally good health, and were each given tiny paper collars in different identifying colors—red, blue, green, yellow and purple—before being bundled into a new, bigger box with fresh blankets, and Chloe had been dismissed early to get them home and settled. Considering they couldn’t yet open their eyes properly, it wasn’t like they needed toys or food bowls or anything; the clinic provided her with plenty of kitten milk and syringes to feed them, then the rest was pretty much up to Chloe.
Navigating the city with a box of kittens proved to be a task, as did opening doors, but once they were safely out of the cold and closed away in the apartment, Chloe cleared a space by her side of the pull-out bed to settle their box, then set a timer for every two hours on her phone for scheduled feeds.
By late afternoon, changed out of her scrubs and into a standard winter comfort outfit of leggings and a sweater, Chloe sat cross-legged on the bed, pouting at the soft whines to ring from the box beside her as she scrolled through kitten care tips on her laptop. “I know, you’ll get more milk soon,” she cooed toward the box, leaning over to admire the tiny black and white blobs sprawled out in their makeshift bed.
BECA MITCHELL
Another day, another frustrating shift at the office. While Beca wasn't a fan of physical activity in general, she was low-key grateful for her studio commute as the musical decompression time on the subway plus the several block power walk to and from her subway stops helped blow off some steam. So she wasn't in the worst mood by the time she got home, all things considered.
Especially because her apartment had heat. And food. And…
"Chloe?" Beca cast a confused wave at her roommate as she set her laptop bag down gently by the foot of the bed. Then she carefully removed her headphones from around her neck and shrugged off her blazer. "What's up, you okay? Are you sick or--"
The tiniest mewl interrupted Beca and her brow furrowed as she followed the sound toward the other side of the bed. "Uh, what…" Taking a few steps over, her hand flew to her mouth and barely muffled her gasp at the sight of the tiny creatures in the box. "Dude, oh my god!"
CHLOE BEALE
In hindsight, maybe Chloe should’ve texted her roommates to at least give them a heads up about the kittens, but she’d been kind of preoccupied all day, so the thought had just slipped her mind. It wasn’t until she heard the door opening that it registered to her, and Chloe bit back a grimace as she took in Beca’s reaction. She couldn’t tell if it was a good one or not.
“Before you say anything,” she began quickly, pushing her laptop aside to instead swing her legs over the side of the bed, body now facing the box. “They were abandoned. Some lady brought them to us this morning, and they don’t have their mom, so now someone has to take care of them until they’re big enough to take care of themselves.” Chloe pulled her lips inward. “Don’t make too much noise, okay? They’re really tiny, you might scare them.”
BECA MITCHELL
Beca may have perfected her hard-ass exterior over the years, but while she held firmly to her belief that most people suck… she'd always had a soft spot for animals. Some of them even melted that badass persona right into mush. She couldn't help it.
"Oh my god, okay." Beca kept her voice low and toed off her boots before lowering herself to sit on Chloe's side of the bed beside her. "Poor babies! They're so freakin' small, holy shit. I've never seen a cat that small." And there were five of them!
All of this information processed a little too slowly as Beca tried shaking off the shock and she cut Chloe a glance, blinking. "Wait. Does that mean we're taking care of them until they're big enough?"
CHLOE BEALE
Pleased that Beca at least didn’t seem angry, Chloe’s expression softened, and she glanced between the box of kittens and her best friend seated now beside her. “I know, they’re newborn,” Chloe explained, keeping her volume low so as not to wake the ones that were still sleeping. Technically, they all should be sleeping between feeds, but already some of them were a little more lively than the others. “We don’t know when exactly they were born, but it can’t be more than a couple days. You see how they can’t really open their eyes yet?”
Peering into the box, Chloe pulled in her lips again. “Umm, yes,” she nodded. “I mean, I’m taking care of them. It would be awes if you could help, but you don’t have to. They do need to be fed a lot, though… Every two to three hours, in fact.” Chloe paused, nose wrinkling as she shot Beca an apologetic look. “And that’s every two to three hours, including during the night.”
BECA MITCHELL
Beca nodded without hesitating. “Shut up, nerdface. I’m not gonna let you do this shit by yourself--it sounds like a lot of work. And I’m here already. I’d be a dick if I let you do this all by yourself.” Not that Chloe needed to ask. Seriously, Beca never thought twice about helping Chloe, that’s how it had always been. She caught her lower lip between her teeth for a bit, seemingly losing her restraint. (At least she didn’t let out the squeal. She had a cool image to maintain.) “So can I hold one??”
CHLOE BEALE
Chloe knew Beca was a softie for animals—who wasn’t?—but she still felt a certain sense of relief in response to her reaction. It was much better than she’d expected, considering they were going to have a lot of sleepless nights ahead of them. But Beca was her best friend, and Chloe knew that she’d always have her back, so it really shouldn’t have surprised her.
Her lips relaxed into a warm smile. “You can, but you have to be extra careful, okay? In fact…” she paused, picking up her phone to check the time. “They’re due another feed really soon, maybe you could feed one or two of them?” Pushing herself up from the bed, Chloe bounced toward the small kitchen, then directly to the fridge to grab the kitten milk. “There are a couple syringes by the box, grab those and we can fill them. Feeding them is so cute, Bec. They make the sweetest little suckling noises.”
BECA MITCHELL
“Oh, um--sure!” Her reply tinged with a sudden injection of anxiety. “They’re so freakin’ small,” she noted as she peered into the box once again. “What if I accidentally crush it or something?” Beca wrinkled her nose, knowing the concern was likely a dumb one--she had pretty small hands, after all. While Chloe set up the milk, Beca hurried to change into her pajama pants and a soft t-shirt, wanting to get comfy before handling the baby kittens.
CHLOE BEALE
Chloe chuckled quietly as she got to work on carefully heating a saucepan of water. “You won’t. They’re also less fragile than they look… But I mean, don’t, like, squeeze them or anything,” she frowned, focus on preparing everything she needed. While Beca changed, Chloe set a fresh container of milk into the pan, keeping the heat low, before shuffling back toward the bed to plop back down into her previous position.
Grabbing the small notebook she’d been recording their feeds (and other habits) in throughout the afternoon so far, Chloe pulled it into her lap, opening it up to scan over her earlier notes. “I’m guessing you’ve never fed a kitten before?” she questioned, lifting her gaze toward Beca. A shot of excitement ran through her at the idea of getting to teach her something, even if it was just how to syringe feed, so Chloe wasn’t going to waste any time, and leaned down to carefully scoop up the first meowing kitten.
“This one’s name is Green for now,” she said in a soft voice, pulling her hand close to her chest and glancing down toward the black and white blob with a small, contented smile on her lips. “They’re all named after the colors on their collars,” Chloe hummed, reaching out with her finger to delicately stroke over the kitten’s tiny head. “Do you want to hold him? His milk isn’t ready yet, but I bet he still loves cuddles.”
BECA MITCHELL
Beca had to bite back her smile as she watched Chloe go into vet mode, writing her notes and analyzing the situation. “Nope. Can’t say I have, Dr. B. Good thing I’ve got you to teach me.” Pride shined in Beca’s eyes as she watched her best friend handle the kitten with such gentle care. Chloe would be an incredible vet, and it was super awesome she found something she had so much passion for and could make a career out of it.
“Green,” Beca repeated, a slight smirk twisting on her lips. “Like the Green Goblin. Dope.” Her spine snapped straighter when Chloe asked if she wanted to hold him, and she couldn’t resist shooting Chloe a sheepish smile as she made grabby hands toward the baby. “I’ll be real careful. Promise.” She carefully helped transfer the kitten into her hands, gasping as she brought him against her chest. (Mindful of her sore nippes, as always lately. Thanks, Stacie.)
“Hey there, little dude!” Beca whispered, carefully stroking the soft fur on his back before dropping a kiss to his head. “I’m Auntie Beca.” Well, so much for not getting attached.
CHLOE BEALE
It was perhaps kind of pathetic, the way Chloe’s entire body would tingle with pride whenever Beca called her that particular name. To be more relatable to their clients, everybody just used each other’s first names at the clinic, so she only really got the doctor title at home, but it always made her feel incredibly warm.
“Yes, exactly like the Green Goblin,” Chloe grinned, the reference going entirely over her head. “There’s also a Red Goblin, a Yellow Goblin, a Blue Goblin and a Purple Goblin.” Her gaze was down on the kitten, but glancing over to see Beca so eager and excited made Chloe’s heart flutter in the strangest way. She couldn’t resist cracking a bright smile in response. “I trust you, Bec.”
Cautiously handing him over, Chloe watched the way Beca interacted with the kitten, and did all she could to bite back her grin. “Auntie Beca,” she giggled quietly, reaching out to run the pad of her finger over Green’s head again. “He’s so cute, right? He’s definitely one of the more lively ones already. He has one brother, Blue,” she explained as she rose from the bed to go check on the milk. “Then the rest are girls. Do any of the others look like they’re awake?”
BECA MITCHELL
"He's so freaking small," Beca marveled, continuing to card her fingers in what she hoped was a soothing rhythm through his fur. While Chloe tended to the milk, Beca peered back into the tiny kitten box. "Um… it's hard to tell since their eyes are all still closed but it looks like purple's squirming around a little." Beca refocused her attention on the green collared baby in her hands, hitching her voice up an octave in an uncharacteristically gooey sort of way. "You hungry, buddy? Dr. B's fixing you up some grub right now."
CHLOE BEALE
Careful not to let the milk get too warm, Chloe pulled the container from the pan, testing a small drop on the back of her hand like regular baby milk. “Oh, really? That’s good, Purple has been the least lively so far,” she commented, turning off the heat and bringing the milk back over to the bed with her. Although she really wanted to say something about Beca’s adorable baby voice, she held it back, and instead just grinned as she reached for two of the syringes.
“You can feed Green while I feed Purple?” she suggested, carefully measuring out the correct amount of milk into the first one, then set it down on the bed beside Beca. She did the same with the second, before reaching into the box to scoop up Purple, the obvious runt of the litter. “Hi, baby,” she cooed, bringing the smallest kitten up to her face to take a look. “I don’t think your brothers and sisters let you get much milk from your mama, huh?” Chloe pouted, setting the kitten down in her lap on her back legs with her hand securely holding her upright.
“Okay, so this is how you feed them,” Chloe began, grabbing the closest filled syringe and guiding it toward the kitten’s mouth. “Nice and gentle,” she just above whispered, finger pushing delicately on the plunger. “You just do one little drop at a time, otherwise they might not be able to swallow it properly.” Chloe watched the kitten for a moment, then glanced toward Beca. “You try.”
BECA MITCHELL
“Just you wait,” Beca said, eyeing the tiniest of the litter. The ‘runt’ or whatever. “Purple’s gonna be the toughest cat there’s ever been. Small and scrappy as fuck. Nobody’s gonna dare mess with her.” Was Beca projecting? Nope. Not even a little bit.
She paid close attention to Chloe’s kitten feeding process, only getting somewhat distracted by how adorable she--it was, her whole… vet thing. She’d always been a good teacher (especially when it came to choreography), but helping Beca learn how to care for newborn kittens was pretty damn cute.
“Here we go, Goblin. Milk time.” Gentle as ever, she repositioned the kitten and held up the syringe, pressing out one drop for him. She brightened when the tiniest pink tongue poked out to lap it right up. Beca giggled. “Delicious, huh? Here ya go, have another drop.” Beca remained hyper focused on the kitten, feeding him one drop at a time. She figured Chloe would stop her when he had enough.
CHLOE BEALE
“Small and scrappy,” Chloe echoed, brows rising playfully. Beca was totally describing herself. “She’s gonna have to be scrappy when they start sharing a milk bowl, I think Red is going to be super greedy. She’s already the biggest, and she really, really loves her milk,” Chloe chuckled quietly, glancing toward the open page in her notebook.
Although focused on feeding Purple, she couldn’t help but let her gaze drift toward Beca, at first watching to make sure she knew what she was doing, but then lingering, because there was something almost irresistibly adorable about Beca Mitchell syringe feeding a tiny kitten.
Not that Chloe would ever think of her best friend as irresistible in any other instance, of course.
“This is cute now,” she hummed, gaze moving toward Purple again. “But how do you think you’ll feel about it when we have to wake up every two hours during the night?” Chloe paused then, sending Beca an apologetic look. “I really can figure something else out. Maybe Amy will switch beds with me until they’re a little bigger and don’t have to have regular night feeds?”
BECA MITCHELL
“Well Purple’s gonna have to show Red who’s boss. I believe in her.” Beca cast Chloe a quick smirk before refocusing her attention on her little Green Goblin, who was basically the most adorable creature Beca had ever seen.
“I’ll make it work,” Beca said with a shrug. Though honestly, if literally anyone else in the world asked Beca to deal with waking up every two hours for at least a few weeks, she’d laugh in their face. Chloe… played by a different set of rules. (She always had.) “I mean, how many chances will I get to raise baby kittens like this? It’s pretty awesome.” She pulled a grimace at the suggestion, shaking her head. “Oh god, please no. Waking up every two hours is cake compared to sharing a bed with Amy. She’ll dutch oven me to death.”
CHLOE BEALE
The apologetic expression melted into something more appreciative, with Chloe shooting Beca a small, genuine smile. “Thanks, Bec,” she nodded, turning her focus back to the feeding kitten again. “I’m just worried you’ll be tired at work. I’m gonna bring them to work with me and come home between classes,” Chloe explained, tip of her pointer brushing soothingly over Purple’s head. “I can also weigh them and stuff at work, and I bet some of the others will help out there, too. It was weird that nobody seemed to want to take them, though.” Her nose wrinkled, though she shook off the thought; Chloe had always been the first to jump at the chance to help, after all.
Glancing toward Beca, Chloe motioned to her chest, gaze instinctively dropping for the briefest of moments, though she quickly picked it back up again. “Still sore?”
BECA MITCHELL
“I’ll figure it out,” Beca muttered. “I can always hook myself up to a coffee IV at work, it’s fine.” She cast Chloe a tight-lipped smile before glancing back down to the kitten lapping at the milk droplet. “He seems like he’s worth it. They all do.” She peered over the side of the bed into the box of the three remaining kittens, all who seemed to be asleep at the moment.
She blinked at Chloe’s question, following her gaze and puffing out a chuckle. Her cheeks warmed and she rolled her eyes. “Yeah, it’s been a rough week. Tattoos are healed up by now but this sucks so far.” Beca sighed. “They’ll get better I guess. Eventually.”
CHLOE BEALE
“True,” Chloe shrugged, cracking a grin. “Sounds very healthy.” In spite of everything, she wasn’t trying to talk Beca out of it. In fact, she was very grateful for the help; it felt like a strangely nice bonding activity of some kind, taking care of the kittens together. While she watched Beca and Green from the corner of her eye, Chloe’s gaze drifted toward the box, sad smile tugging at her lips. “They do. I just feel bad for their mom. Their real mom,” she corrected, lifting the kitten up to talk in a baby voice, “I guess we’re your foster moms now, huh?”
Being careful not to let her gaze slip again, Chloe only nodded to Beca’s response. “Mm, when I got my navel piercing it bled for a whole week.” She paused, a look of horror creasing onto her face. “Wait, they’re not… bleeding, right?”
BECA MITCHELL
“I mean, captaining the Bellas for three years was pretty much like herding cats most of the time anyway. This shouldn’t be much different.” Beca’s heart cracked with empathy when Chloe mentioned the kittens’ mother, but then thumped harder at Chloe uttering the phrase foster moms. Like--both of them, doing this together.
She wrinkled her nose with sympathy and shook her head. “No, no bleeding. They’re just, like--super fucking sensitive? Especially in the shower. Yikes.” Beca winced. “I guess they’re not as sore as a few days ago, so that’s good.”
CHLOE BEALE
Chloe giggled at the mental image, head nodding along in agreement. “I guess. Kittens are crazy, though. Like, even more than the Bellas. Especially when they get a little bigger and want to run around all night.” She really had gotten them into something here, but there was something exciting about it too, sharing this big task, and Chloe couldn’t quite put her finger on exactly what.
Her eyes immediately shot back toward the kitten, because Beca totally didn’t mean that kind of sensitive, but Chloe’s mind began to race somewhere it definitely shouldn’t. “Mm,” she hummed nonchalantly, keeping herself busy with shaking the syringe a little bit to keep Purple awake. “Then they’ll be better in no time. Be thankful you’re not a cat, if you were then the kittens would be suc—” She caught herself, trailing off and pulling the syringe carefully away, before settling the kitten down on its belly. “Gonna let your brother and sisters have some now, pretty girl?”
BECA MITCHELL
“I dunno, dude… drunk Bellas might be on that level.” She chuckled, a few specific college memories flashing in front of her eyes. (Literally flashing, in Stacie’s case.) Green Goblin yawned and licked his lips once more. Beca snickered. “Speaking of--are you milk drunk, buddy? You look like you’re ready for a nap.”
Beca’s eyes popped wide and she blinked at Chloe, amusement twisting up the corners of her mouth as she scrunched up her nose yet again. “You’re such a weirdo,” she reminded Chloe for what must’ve been the ten thousandth time throughout their friendship. “Yeah, let’s switch it up. I’ll take Red.”

Royal Punch (chapter 11)
“Dimi. You are upsetting the little ones.”
Dimi looked at Aura with a grim expression on her face as she stopped sweeping the stable. The wife of her godfather was holding a griffin cub she was studying to see if the newborn animal was healthy. The cub began to cry, and so did the other three cubs that were hiding under the wings of their mother who growled while looking at Dimi.
“I’m not doing anything.” The human princess returned to sweeping.
“You are scaring the little ones, they can feel you are upset.”
Dimi sighed. The downside of her animal empathy powers were that they could feel all of her negative emotions as well. And cubs were extra sensitive to that. “I have a right to not feeling cheerful.”
“Oh, you most certainly do.” Aura returned the cub to her mother and siblings. “But you don’t have to be here while being... moody.”
“I’M NOT MOODY!” Dimi snapped at the sphinx woman.
That resulted in all of the four cups crying loudly. Aura narrowed her eyes as she made a now-look-what-you-did gesture.
Dimi groaned as she dropped the broom. “FINE, I’m going outside.”
The human girl sat on the chopping stump near the stable. She looked at the forge. Smoke came out of the chimney, meaning that Ivan was still working. This suited her just fine, since that meant she didn’t have to see him just yet. She was almost as angry at him as she were on her father.
“So, you wanna talk about it?”
Dimi looked to her left. Aura stood and looked at her somewhat worried with her arms crossed.
“Talk about what?”
“Well, you are clearly upset about something. And you are not talking to Ivan about it, that’s not a good sign.”
“That’s because Ivan is part of the problem.”
“Really? What did he do?”
“He DIDN’T tell me that my dad was a spineless jerk.”
Aura lifted both her eyebrows. “Ouch. Harsh words. Where is this coming from?”
“I met a gorgon today.”
Aura’s left eye twitched. Dimi luckily didn’t notice. “A gorgon? That’s... nice.”
“It was, until she explained to me that humans killed a ton of her ancestors, treated them like garbage AND that my dad didn’t do squad to make up for it.“
“Ah. I see.” Aura leaned against the stable. “That’s rough, kiddo. But what is Ivan to blame for here?”
Dimi scoffed. “He didn’t tell me! For so long I wanted to get my dad back, and NOW I know that he is a cowardly jerk!”
“You wanted Ivan to call your old man that?”
“YES! Wait... no? Yes? Ah...” Dimi looked dumbfounded. “I don’t know! Look, I wanted the truth!... I think!” Dimi slapped her forehead. “Dammit, I’m not suppose to be angry at him!”
“Who? Ivan or your dad?”
“BOTH OF THEM!” Dimi stood up and kicked a bucket.
“Dimi...” Aura wondered if what she was about to say was a bad idea. “Ivan and me talked a lot before getting married. He wanted me to know everything about him before the wedding. We talked about things he might not tell you. You want to know about what he thinks of your dad?”
Dimi stood with her back to the sphinx for a couple of seconds before she turned around and walked over to Aura, leaning against the stable. “Sure. Yes.”
“Look, you have a right to be angry about not being taught about the negative aspects of your family history. Trust me, I can relate.” Aura narrowed her eyes. “History is not exactly appreciated where I came from, I know what it is like to hear the ugly truth. And sure, your dad was sort of a pushover. But I think you should consider that before your dad became king, he was just, well... a normal guy, I guess. Just regular Pater the Human. He grew up in this little town as a normal guy without much talent for human magic either. And then he met a girl who was ANYTHING but regular, one who actually fell in love with him. A princess. They decided to start a family together. But you know the problem with marrying a princess? You become royalty. Worse, you become a MONARCH if your wife die. Pater assumed he was just gonna be the husband of the queen, that he was gonna look pretty and nothing else. But then his wife died and he had a whole KINGDOM to be responsible for. Not everyone is cut out for that sort of responsibility.”
“So WHAT?!” Dimi narrowed her eyes. “It was STILL his responsibility. And he screwed up.”
“Well, he did do some good things. He made better laws for foreigners like me. the only reason to why I was allowed to move into the kingdom of Nesredna after I deserted the army was because of king Pater.”
Dimi looked shocked at Aura. “Wait, army? You were a soldier?”
“I will tell you some other day. What you need to understand is that your dad became QUITE unpopular after that little law change, so he decided to play nice so to say. Give his subjects what they wanted. And most of these subjects were humans who hates gorgons, minotaurs and others.”
“Why would Ivan then even agree to raise me?”
“Your dad was his best friend. They grew up together like brothers. And when no one else gave a damn about Ivan, your dad pulled MANY strings to help him out.”
“With what?”
Aura hesitated. THAT she thought Ivan had to tell her if she needed to know at all. “That’s... grown-up stuff, Dimi.”
“Whatever. I’m still angry.”
“That’s okay. You are entitled to be angry.” Aura laughed. “You are a teenager for gods’ sake, you are SUPPOSE to be mad at your parents.”
“NO, I’M NOT! I’m not SUPPOSE to be angry at my dad. I’m suppose to miss him.”
“You should especially be mad at him if you miss him.”
Dimi was about to say something. Then, she just sighed and looked defeated.
Aura placed her clawed hand gently on Dimi’s shoulder. “Being angry doesn’t mean you don’t care about him.”
“Whatever.” Dimi looked at her feet to evade eye contact.
“Would you... heh...” Aura smiled awkwardly. “Would you like a hug?”
“I’m not a baby.” Dimi scoffed. Then she looked the lion-woman in the eyes. “... Actually, a hug would be kinda nice.”
The sphinx embraced the human girl who awkwardly hugged back.
“Okay...” After the hug had lasted for a couple of seconds, Dimi gently pulled her herself free from Aura’s embrace. “That’s enough Ah... thanks.“
“Don't mention it.”
***
“OW! Damn it all to hell!”
Ivan blew on his finger that he had hurt with his hammer. He was normally not that clumsy. In fact, he wasn’t clumsy at all when it came to his work.
Then again, it bothered him how angry Dimi had been. Or he assumed that she was angry? In fact, he was unsure if she was angry at him. Ivan had no idea what went through that girl’s head. He partly felt bad about not going looking for her to see how she was doing, but he assumed she wanted some space from him.
Or maybe she didn’t?
“Why is it so hard to figure out how young women works?!” Ivan yelled as he fetched his hammer to finish the horseshoe.
“Tell me about it, we can’t figure ourselves out.”
Ivan turned as he heard Dimi’s voice. She had just entered the forge. She looked at him and looked at him with an expression that was somewhat hard to read.
“Hi.” Ivan didn’t know what else to say.
“Maybe you should take a break? I can take over for a while.”
“Sure...” Ivan shrugged. “That would be... nice.”
Dimi took the hammer from Ivan and looked at her feet. “I’m not mad. Not at you, at least. Just... confused?”
Ivan shrugged again. “That’s fair.”
The human girl and the bull-man smiled awkwardly at each other, not sure what to say. Dimi then tied an apron around her waist and started hammering on warm steel while Ivan went to the house to prepare dinner.
Aura was already doing so when Ivan entered the house. “Hey, darling. Did you and Dimi talk things out?”
“Something like that.” Ivan kissed his wife on the cheek. “I wonder who told her about Pater.”
“Dimi met...” Aura hesitated. “A new friend. They talked about her negative feelings toward Dimi’s father. I decided to talk to her about it and tell her what you told me.”
“Ah...” Ivan looked worried. “Did you tell her about... Veronica?”
“No, absolutely not. IF she needs to know about that bitch, YOU should tell her, not me.”
“I don’t mind her knowing about Veronica as such.” A grim expression appeared on Ivan’s face. “But I don’t want her to know about my mistakes.”
The next day...
“I’m telling you, Dimi, Oswald is the cutest Satyr in the kingdom. Sure, not as cute as my Cobalt, but I think you would like him.” Amethyst followed Dimi to the former bakery while she tried to convince her to go on a double date with her and the dwarf she was currently in a relationship with.
“Amethyst, I’m...” Dimi sighed. “I don’t have time for stuff like that. I train and I work and I rather wanna spend my free time with you.”
“Yes, and I do think you should spend it with me. AND Oswald.”
“I don’t know him.”
“Yes, and we can fix that.”
“Right now, I want you to meet Ruby. I think you will like her and she needs a hand fixing up her new place.”
“More than happy to. It is about time we got a place where we can go to eat locally.” Amethyst smiled about the thought of a restaurant in Jadedale.
She stopped smiling when she spotted who she assumed was Ruby.
The young gorgon stood with her back against Dimi and Amethyst as she was adjusting her dark glasses when she was taking a break from cleaning a window. One of the snakes on her head hissed. Ruby turned around and noticed her new friend and a dwarf had come to lend her a hind in fixing up the place that was gonna be her very own eatery. “Hey, Dimi! Glad you came, I could use a hand here.”
“Sure, no problem. I brought a friend to help.” Dimi smiled at Amethyst as she waved a hand at the snake girl. “Amethyst, this is Ruby.” Dimi stopped smiling when she noticed that Amethyst looked like she has eaten something she couldn’t stomach. “What’s wrong?”
“Hello, nice to meet you.” Amethyst made a half-assed smile at Ruby(who gave the dwarf a tired look) then turned to Dimi and pulled her arm. “Dimi, could I talk with you privately for a sec?”
“Ah, sure?” Dimi looked at Ruby who narrowed her eyes the same way she did when Dimi pointed out that she was a gorgon. “Ruby, we will be back in a sec.”
“Sure, whatever.” Ruby sighed as she went inside with her bucket and wet rag.
Amethyst dragged Dimi a few steppes away from the closed down bakery before she gave her a stern look. “Dimi, how did you meet her?”
“Ah, in Onyxville?”
“No, no. I mean how did you meet her?”
“Ah... when some creatures were ganging up on her?”
“Alright. Why did they gang up on her? Did you ask her that?”
Dimi gave the teen dwarf a blank stare. “Ah, no? I kinda think it was unimportant why anyone would.”
Amethyst groaned. “Dimi, you can’t be that naïve. Did you consider that maybe that gorgon did something? That she had it coming? That she was... you know... asking for trouble?”
Dimi’s blank glare was replaced with an angry one. “No, it didn’t occur to me. Why would you even think that?!”
“Dimi, she is a snake person! Doesn’t the snake part bother you just a little? Everyone knows that gorgons are violent, their freaky hair has a mind of its own, they steal, eat up animals while they are still alive-”
“AND WE HAVE AN AMAZING SENSE OF HEARING ON TOP OF THAT!” Ruby yelled from inside her house.
Amethyst blushed while Dimi gave her an angry glare.
Dimi was so angry she was practically steaming. “What the hell is WRONG with you?!”
“Dimi, I didn’t mean to upset you-”
“Upset me?!” Dimi pointed at Ruby’s soon-to-be restaurant. “You just called Ruby a criminal, violent snake-monster!”
“But she most likely IS one!”
Dimi grind her teeth. “If Ruby is a snake-monster, then maybe YOU are a freaky, bearded BIT-”
SMACK!
Dimi’s cheek turned red after Amethyst had made a small jump to reach the human’s face in order to slap her.
The human and the dwarf glared angrily at each other before Dimi smiled mockingly and said; “I dodge punches for a part-time job. You only stroke me because I LET you do it.”
“SOD OFF!” Amethyst stomped away while steaming like a kettle.
Dimi sighed as she watched the dwarf leave. She entered Ruby’s shop to be met by the gorgon at the door. The puddle at the floor around her mob indicated she hadn’t done much while Dimi had talked with Amethyst. “I’m sorry about that.”
“Nothing you should be sorry about. Hey, should I mob the floor?” Dimi said with a tone that indicated that she didn’t think they should mention the incident.
“Ah, sure.” Ruby handed over the mob. “Hey, while you do that, how about I warm us up something to eat? How does turkey ragoût sound to you? I made some earlier.”
“What’s ragoo?”
Ruby smiled. “Give me a few minutes.”
After a while when Dimi had just begun drying up the floor, the human could smell something amazing and stood up from the floor to see Ruby holding a wooden bowl in each hand. Dimi took one and saw a sort of stew in it. The two of them leaned up against a wall and Dimi took the spoon from the bowl out and took a mouthful of the “ragoo”. It tasted unbelievably good.
“Ruby, on behalf of everyone who lives in the village, I wanna thank you for moving to Jadedale. This restaurant is gonna be a success!”
Ruby smiled bitterly. “Glad you are an optimist.”
Three days later...
Ruby threw another knife that impaled the opposite wall. She groaned as she stepped out of her kitchen and looked to see if someone had entered the restaurant.
As expected, no one had.
She kicked a chair that stood by one of the four tables in the room. She was frustrated, but not surprised. Moving to a smaller town had not helped at all.
Her savings, as well as her dad’s savings, had been wasted for nothing.
She had gone to the city square to do shopping. The only good thing to say about Jadedale was that people at least just gave her looks of dismay instead of downright insulting her. Bottom line was that no one wanted to associate with her unless she actually talked to them, and they would keep it short.
“I’m moving to the ocean to live with my parents...” The young gorgon made a sigh of defeat as she sat on the floor and felt helpless.
***
“Feast your eyes, ladies. It’s vegetarian night!”
“BOO!”
Ivan smiled like a watermelon as he placed the pot with spicy carrot soup on the dinner table while Dimi and Aura shoved their disapproval by making thumbs down gestures.
Ivan shook his head. “Don’t you boo at this soup. It is my grandpa’s recipe. Nectar of gods I tell you!”
“What kind of god, a rabbit one?” Dimi smirked as she poured soup in her bowl.
“Ivan, I want meat tomorrow, you hear me?” Aura sipped the soup of her spoon. “You can eat all the vegetable you like, but I want MEAT when we go out to celebrate our anniversary.”
“OH, that’s right!” Ivan placed his spoon in the bowl. “We still haven’t agreed on where to go. There are plenty of places we could eat in Onyxville.”
Aura made an awkward smile. “Except for Pie House.”
“Oh, ABSOLUTELY NOT the Pie House. Never setting my foot inside that place again.” Ivan made an awkward laugh.
As Dimi had finished her soup, she realized something. “Hey, I have an idea for where we could go.”
“Sure, we are open for suggestions.” Ivan smiled at aura as he poured more soup up for himself. “Right honey?”
“I think Dimi very much has a say here.” Aura grinned, revealing her sharp teeth.
“Well...” Dimi coughed. “We don’t have to go to Onyxville. We have a place where you can buy food now in Jadedale. And I had food at Ruby’s that was great.”
Ivan and Aura seized smiling right away. Ivan looked as if he was about to choke on the soup. Aura looked worried at Ivan.
“Ah... Ruby’s?” Ivan began to blink nervously. “That’s right, I forgot that we... have a new creature in town.”
“Yeah, she is great. And I had her cooking before, we should totally go there tomorrow.”
Ivan bit his lower lip. “Dimi, I’m not sure I would be... comfortable about that.”
Aura slapped her forehead as she mimed the word No with her lips.
Dimi raised an eyebrow. “What’s that suppose to mean?”
Ivan realized he had messed up. “Um, it means that... I just think we should go to a place we are familiar with since we rarely go out that often.”
Aura slapped her forehead three times more.
“... I don’t believe it.” Dimi stood up and pointed a VERY accusing finger at her godfather. “You are just as bad as everyone else!”
Ivan blinked. “What is that suppose to mean?”
“You know EXACTLY what I mean!” Dimi slammed a fist on the table. “I always loved how everyone in this little town got along despite the many diverse species. But not I realize it is because it was all the good species lived here. As soon as this nice girl moves into our supposedly very welcoming community, EVERYONE give her the cold shoulder because she just so happens to have scales!”
“Dimi, be fair now.” Ivan tried to use his I’m-older-thus-smarter voice when he wanted Dimi to accept something he was about to explain. “I don’t know your new friend, but have you considered that maybe there is a reason to why people don’t... trust that kind of creatures?”
Aura sighed as she rolled her eyes.
Dimi gave Ivan a glare that could set a house on fire. “Suuure. I bet there are plenty of good reasons to why no one likes gorgons. Hey, I bet there are good reasons to why people think minotaurs eats babies!”
Ivan looked shocked at the human princess, then looked at his wife for backup.
“Don’t you look at me.” Aura waved a clawed finger. “The kid has a point.”
Ivan stood up and looked at the girl with anger in his eyes. “Dimi, that was uncalled for. That was not fair.”
“You are right, Ivan. It is so not fair. It is not fair when people talk smack about you behind your back in Onyxville. And it is NOT fair that people assume Ruby is trouble when she has only been here for less than a week and done nothing wrong. It’s not fair that no one gives Ruby a chance.”
Ivan opened his mouth. Then he didn’t say anything since he was unsure what to say. He closed his mouth so he wouldn’t look stupid. He lifted a finger, then lowered it.
“Ahem.” Dimi and Ivan turned their attention toward the sphinx woman. “If anyone would like to know what I think, then I think going to Ruby’s sounds like a lovely idea. We get a nice meal as well as supporting the local economy.”
Ivan looked at his wife. Then at his protégé. He sighed as he sat down. “... She serves vegetarian food?”
***
Ruby stared at the still closed door as she threw a second knife at it.
“Move to the countryside, he said!” Ruby sneered as she took aim. “Creatures will be more welcoming in a smaller town, he said! Start fresh!” Her snakes all hissed in anger along with the teen as she impaled the door with her knife. “Bunch of ignorant, self-righteous, butt-scratching HICKS!”
Ruby was about to throw another kitchen knife... and almost had a heart attack as the door was opened.
A minotaur looked terrified at the knife in Dimi’s hand. He gulped as he raised his hands above his horned head. He looked at the young gorgon who blushed and looked very embarrassed.
“Oh, NONONONO!” Ruby bit her lower lip as she smiled. “I wasn’t... It’s a cook thing!”
“Hello...” Ivan smiled awkwardly at the snake girl. “Do you have a table for a party of three?”
“Sssuuure...” Ruby looked at the empty chairs. “I can squeeze you in.”
“Name is Ivan, I’m the town blacksmith.” Ivan stepped inside. He was dressed in a green jacket. He looked at the knife attacked to the door before returning his attention toward his host. “I’m here with my wife and my goddaughter that I believe you know?”
A lion-bird-woman stepped inside along with Dimi. Both of them in dresses that weren’t expensive but looked nice.
“I’m Aura.” The sphinx made a warm smile as she grabbed Ruby’s hand and shook it firmly. “I heard your ragoo should be divine!”
Ruby laughed timidly. “Oh, you won’t be disappointed, madam. I promise you that.”
“Madam?!” Aura laughed. “Dimi, I LIKE this girl!”
Ruby pulled herself free from the handshake as she looked at the bull-man. “And I hear you are a vegetarian, sir?”
Ivan wanted to kick himself. This gorgon was a nice young lady. “Yes, you have any soups or salads?”
“Oh, I have something much better.” Ruby looked very please. “Ever tried ratatouille?”
Ivan looked baffled. “Rattoo what?”
Ruby chuckled. “Give me a few minutes and you are gonna have a new favorite dish, sir.” Ruby looked at Dimi. “And ragout for you?”
“Absolutely!” Dimi sent Ruby a big grin.
“Alright, give me a few minutes and... oh. right.” Ruby went to the front door and pulled the knives free. “Gonna need these...”
Dimi resisted the urge to giggle as Ruby went to the kitchen. She immediately lost the want to laughed as she front door was opened once again and two dwarfs entered the establishment.
“Come now.” Amethyst’s mother Agate gently pushed her daughter toward the table where Dimi and her family sat. “Go on.”
Amethyst sighed as she walked toward the table, not looking Dimi in the eyes. Dimi however stared at the teen dwarf.
“Dimi...” Amethyst groaned. “I had a long talk with my mom... and she pointed out that maybe judging creatures because of garbage she has been told by idiots may not be that smart. That I should be more unbiased when I meet new creatures. And that I was just being rude and should be more open minded. And...” Amethyst looked up and stared Dimi directly in the eyes. “I’m sorry. I was a jerk.”
“Am, I’m sorry I made fun of your beard.” Dimi stood up from the table. “But I’m not the one you have to apologize to.”
Amethyst looked like she wanted to shrink into nothingness. “Do I have to?”
Dimi nodded. “You don’t have to like her, but she is my friend and you insulted her.”
Dimi offered Amethyst a hand that the dwarf girl reluctantly accepted as she walked toward the kitchen.
“Ivan...” Aura decided this was a good moment to talk with Ivan about why he had had issues coming in the first place. “I know you didn’t want to come here because you kept thinking about Veronica when you heard about Ruby.”
“Oh, PLEASE.” Ivan shook his head. “I was being stupid, I realize this now. That Ruby girl and other gorgons can’t be held responsible for the actions of one woman.”
“I didn’t want to say anything.”
“Well, I’m glad Dimi did.” Ivan sniffed. “Hey, I think I can smell eggplants!”
***
Old man Sunmut the Satyr and Greg the Goblin looked at the restaurant from a distance.
“This would NEVER have happened back in my day.” The old goat man looked at the little building with a judging look. “Here I thought Ivan was a smart lad.”
“Yeah, and the dwarf family too?” Greg sighed. “Some people have no standards.”
“I’m telling you, they will all come out turned to stone.”
“Hear ya, hear ya.”
The two creatures said nothing for a while.
“... smells kinda good though.” Greg gave Sunmut a look.
“Yeah...”
The goat and the goblin exchanged glares.
“Ah, to heck with it!” Sunmut tightened his grip around his cane. “I’m old, it’s too late for me to fear death. I’m going in!”
“So am I, I’m STARVED.”

Making Amends
#8 With Bucky as requsted by NOBODY BECAUSE I READ THE WRONG PROMPT AND DIDN’T NOTICE UNTIL AFTER I WROTE IT! FML!!!!!
Person A: Why won’t you just accept my apology?
Person B: Because you shot me!
Person A: Only a little bit…
Hydra had no sense of class. None. It was bad enough that they kept shooting at you when you were on a mission, but on a date? Rude. Rude and tactless. What was worse, it was your favourite restaurant, the one with the really good pasta and the cute waiter who always gave you extra parmesan.
The fuckers didn’t even wait until after desert before they attacked.
“Oh hell no, you might have fucked with my restaurant, my waiter and my dessert but i draw the line at trying to kill my boyfriend!” You snarled, body slamming an agent who had been stupidly trying to sneak up on Bucky.
The two of you tumbled to the ground in a flurry of limbs and swearing and by the time you hit the floor, he was dead and you were still angry.
“So glad I’m more valuable to you than cake.” Bucky scoffed, easily taking down his own self-assigned portion of the bad guys.
“Yeah well, cake only makes me happy while I’m eating it. You’re always there.” You told him.
“So I’m higher on the list because I’m more reliable?” He asked.
“That and I can eat cake but cake never eats me back.” You laughed, extracting your gun from it’s thigh holster and aiming it at an agent who was currently grabbing for a hostage. A very familiar hostage.
“Sorry!” You yelled, just as you pulled the trigger.
It had to be done. The only way to stop the bad guy from hurting your favourite waiter was to shoot through Bucky. It was his fault for being in the way really. Or so you tried to convince yourself. The bullet clipped the edge of Bucky’s thigh, grazing the skin, and continued on its upwards trajectory to rip through the jugular of its intended target.
“Brings a whole new meaning to customer service, right?” You said cockily, grinning at Alec.
Your victorious and frankly witty display was dampened by Bucky swearing at you.
“You just fucking shot me!” He growled.
“I grazed you, to save an innocents life! It’s barely worse than a paper cut!” You insisted.
You weren’t lying. It wasn’t even a centimetre deep, maybe two inches long. It would be healed in a matter of hours thanks to the serum.
“You couldn’t have shot around me?” He snapped.
“I’m not Angelina fucking Jolie, this isn’t Wanted. I can’t curve bullets, what did you want me to do? Let him die?”
Bucky mumbled something that sounded suspiciously like ‘yes’ and stomped over to the bodies to make sure they were dead.
“Thank you.” Alec the waiter finally managed to blurt out.
“Yeah, don’t worry about it.” You said dismissively, standing up and running after Bucky.
“I’m really sorry if it helps?” You told him.
“It doesn’t.”
“But I’m really reallllyyyyy sorry.” You pouted.
“Good for you.”
“Why won’t you just accept my apology?” You whined.
“Because you shot me!” He rebutted.
“Only a little bit…” You defended yourself.
“I’m not mad, because you’re going to make it up to me.” He growled.
“Oooh, kinky.” You laughed.
“It will be.” He said with a wicked grin.
“So shooting you equals kinky sex. What happens if I stab you?” You snorted.
“You get to use your mouth for something other than annoying me.” He said like it was obvious.
“And if I hit you with my car?” You asked.
He slapped you on the ass and gave a suggestive smirk. You winced, making him chuckle.
“I don’t make the rules doll.”
“Kinda feels like you do…” You pointed out.
“I’ll call Steve, have him send some low level agents to clean up this mess and have Tony pay for the damages, you go get your boyfriend to box up our dessert.” He said, looking pointedly at Alec the waiter.
“Fine, come on dear.” You said, holding your hand out to Alec and wiggling your fingers.
The nervous waiter grabbed it immediately, almost crushing your fingers as you dragged him into the kitchen. He was so awed and grateful that he boxed up the entire cake for you.
“This, this is why I love you Alec.” You said, gazing adoringly at him.
You carried the cake back to the car, ignoring the slew of police and agents arriving on the scene and very carefully placed it on the backseat, giving it more care than a newborn baby would get. When you swung open the drivers side door, it smacked into something and you looked up in alarm at Bucky.
“NO! I hit you with the door! That doesn’t count!” You protested.
He fixed you with a wolfish grin and leant around the door to pin you to the side of the car.
“Oh, it counts doll… It counts.”

A/N: I got this template from tenseoyong and I could not find the original creator to give proper credit to. I was waiting for someone to FINALLY request this for V. Like he's the most fatherly (?) of them all in my opinion!!! And he's all in for having 3-5 kids so don't even fight me there.
A = Announcement.- How do you tell him and the world that you’re expecting?
You didn't know you were pregnant until you were about four months in. It was rare but it happened for you two and you had felt no symptoms the entire time. He'd be so pumped for the arrival of twins but he's lowkey stressing because he feels like he has less time to prepare and that he "lost four months."
B = Books.- Did he read the books?
He doesn't read the books and he never will. He's more like a 'wing it' person so he'll go with the flow of things. Somehow he knows everything about the process of birth??? Did he study this before or something bc he really knows his stuff?!?!
C = Cuddles.- Who cuddles the baby more?
He definitely would. He's just so happy to finally have a little version of him and you running around. Whenever he holds the baby he daydreams about things they'll do together. Until he gets soft when it's time for them to go to school for the first time, leave for college, get married and oml take the baby away from him he's crying and smiling at the same time.
D = Daddy.- His reaction to being called Daddy and it setting in.)
You know that gummy smile? Exactly his face when he's called 'daddy' for the first time and it's not in bed ;)))
E = Empty.- Who goes to the store when you guys run out of supplies?
He would volunteer to babysit while you go out but when you come home with your arms full of bags he'd scold you for not letting him help. He didn't know you all needed that much and if he had known he would've went along to make it easier for you.
F = Feeding time- Who does feeding time?
He's all for it. Pretending the food is an airplane and the baby's mouth is the airport. Little plane noises and loud cheers when the baby eats well. All him.
G = Grumpy baby. - Who is better at dealing with a grumpy baby?
There are just some times a grumpy baby can't be calmed so you two go back and fourth to try and but your baby back to sleep while the other is doing something productive like cleaning, laundry, sleepinggggg.
H = How?- how many kids does he want?
"3 if we don't have time but 5 if we do have time" my ass. V wants at least five but that's probably not going to stop him from having more.
J = Jokes.- best dad joke?
Probably stole it from Jin but its, "What do you call a fish with two knees? A two-knee fish!!!"
K = Kisses.- His favorite place to kiss the baby.
He kisses their hands while they are laying on their back and he's just tickling their stomach and they giggle so loud; it's just really cute how v and his children are so close.
L = Little.- How he feels when he holds the baby for the first time.
Literally his world freezes and all he can focus on is his first born in his arms; how they instantly stopped crying when the doctor put them in his arms, how tiny they really are, their hair, eyes, nose, mouth, their teeny tiny fingers and toes. He soaks it all in and he'll never forget how the baby looked. Not even when he is old and frail.
M = Mommy.- what does he call you?
V would definitely call you "momma" along with the baby but he'll bump up the couple pet name game a lot bc he falls in love with you more nd more everyday and the kids are absolutely disgusted by how much skinship you two do. Like V is always hugging you from behind and kissing your cheek and he'll kiss your lips when the kids groan how gross it is when he kisses your forehead. A smirk on his face.
N = Nappies.- who deals with the really bad diapers?
It's all a team effort. He'd act like a doctor in surgery, even pulling out a face mask if it was that bad. You'd hand him the diaper, wipes, etc. when he asked for one; like an assistant would. Lowkey it's just really funny watching you two do childcare because it's always fun for you guys and you make a game out of it.
O = Onesies- Who likes to dress the baby in ridiculous outfits?
He will make sure his kid is fly as hell, but you draw the line at a gucci belt. Why would a baby need a belt???
P = Pet names- names he calls the baby.
"Chubs" bc of their chubby baby cheeks that grandma's love to pinch. Each kid gets a new nickname, one that relates to their personality, traits, etc.
Q = Questions.- How many questions does he ask the nurse?
He wouldn't ask the nurse anything, the only questions he have he'll ask his own mom. She did such a good job raising him and his siblings why would it be different for his own child?
R = Rely- what is the biggest thing you rely on each other for?
(This one is always so hard for me to write for idk why but it is) Ok so I guess you both would want the other to side with you on how to raise your child? Let me explain a bit. Let's say you tell the kid 'no' about something but then the kid goes to v and he says 'yes' to whatever it is. You two want to be on the same page as the other and want proper communication through out the entire family.
S = Sleep duty. - who gets up when it’s really late at night?
Teamwork makes the dream work. You both would take turns but if for some reason one of you is sleeping through the baby's cry the one that is awake will so it. Let's be real one of you will wake the other up and plea that they do it.
T = Trepidation.- fears as a new parent.
He'd be really nervous about saying the wrong thing here and there and scaring the child in some way. He'd be looking at the big picture about everything, how his actions now could affect his child's future. He really just worries his child will be unhappy because of him.
U = Ultra sounds.- His reactions to the ultrasounds.
He points out the baby before the nurse does and she's just like "Okay no one ever sees the baby first bc it's difficult to see but I guess this dad has some super powers or smth" and he marvels at the photos for weeks, printing extra out just to give them to his managers, the other members, his family. And if it's around the holidays, the baby's first picture is being printed on to Christmas cards.
V = Values.- what is the most important value he wants to teach your child.
One of the many things he hopes his children take from him is that he doesn't want them to have to depend on anyone for anything when they grow up. He wants them to have their own backs and to be able to take proper care for themselves for when he is gone and can't do it for them.
W = Water.- Who gives the babe the baths?
Man V is in the bath with the babe in a pair of swimming shorts and washing his and the baby's hair simultaneously. He has no other time to shower since he's busy being a dad and a celebrity at the same time.
X = X-mas- what do you guys plan for the holidays?
It would really depend on how old your baby is or if you were still pregnant. If you were still preggers he'd prefer to stay at home, just in case the baby wants out. But if the baby was a newborn he'd also prefer staying at home, his first Christmas with his new family would be special to him. but if the baby was more like a toddler he'd go and visit your and his parents, letting his son or daughter run around with their cousins whom they only met for the first time that same day. Either way he wants to get professional pictures done and they are hella cheesy at that.
Y = Yelling.- How many fights do the two of you get in?
It's not like loud arguing fights but when you guys are mad at each other you guys only talk when you have to. It sucks for V bc he values communication but when the baby is there he doesn't want to argue in front of them. If the fight started in the beginning of the day most likely it'll end at night when the baby is asleep and you guys are talking quietly in bed, trying to figure out the source of the problem. He hates going to bed angry so it will get resolved or else he is not sleeping a wink that night.
Z = Zoo- How crazy is the house after the birth?
It's just a mess. Somehow there is baby food on the ceiling. Dried wipes are everywhere. Toys all on the floor. It gets even worse when the baby learns how to walk.

Millz
“That’s a pretty color; all of our dresses will be like that?” I asked Darnell after showed me what she wanted the bridesmaid’s dresses for her wedding to look like.
We were in the TV room in my house since I wasn’t allowed to leave to be on my feet for no more than an hour. Trouble was out doing whatever he does during the day, the only kid here was Malachi and he was in his little rocker minding his business.
“The bridesmaids yeah, but you’re the maid of honor so your dress will be made different. It’ll be the same color though.”
“I should’ve known y’all was going to have blue and white everything; fake ass crips.”
“Fuck you,” Darnell laughed. “It’s going to be bomb and lucky for you it’s a year away so you’ll have your body to yourself. You won’t be all swollen in my wedding pictures.”
“That’s great to know.” I sat back against the couch letting out a deep sigh.
“What is wrong with you?” Darnell looked at me confused.
“I’m bored; the only time I leave the house is to go to the doctor. He doesn’t let me do anything else, and I’m fucking hungry.”
I’ve been on house arrest oh my bad bed rest for two months now and it’s annoying as fuck, just like I knew it would be. For the first few weeks Trouble stayed with me but it would be unrealistic for him to be here all day every day with me for the next few months. The only reasons I haven’t gone coo coo for coco puffs is because Malachi is here and taking care of him gives me something to do.
“What did you eat today?”
“A nasty ass egg white sandwich, no salt no pepper, no cheese just dry ass egg whites.” I answered her while rolling my eyes.
“You sound upset,” She laughed.
“This shit aint funny, I’m never getting pregnant again. I’m done for real.”
“Oh please, you’re going to pop out that big head boy then get knocked up again. Just watch and see,”
“Shut up,” I chuckled. During my last appointment I found out that I was having another boy and it was a bittersweet feeling. Sweet because the sex really didn’t matter too much to me and it was bitter because it’s enough boys in this house already; another one definitely wasn’t needed.
“Can you have sex?”
“Yeah but he doesn’t want to with his scary ass. He’s really taking this bed rest shit too literal.”
The morning I was released from the hospital the doctor gave me specific instructions about what I can and cannot do. Now I was told that I couldn’t go to work, and I couldn’t be involved in anything that would stress me out.
I don’t know what the fuck Trouble was listening to because he’s on some extra shit. When he is home if I’m on my feet for more than an hour he’s fussing at me to go lay down. He’s too damn scared to have sex, talking about he doesn’t want me doing too much. Mind you I ask my doctor every time I see her can we have sex and she says yes, while he’s standing right there but he’s not trying to hear that shit at all.
“So he’s scared to fuck you?” Darnell questioned then busted out laughing like something was so damn funny. “All of this, is the exact reason Zaria is going to be an only child.”
“Yeah right,”
“I’m dead ass; Xavier and I are completely fine with her being the only child.”
“You don’t want any more kids?”
“Not really, I mean if it happens we’ll be happy about it but we’re not planning on having more. Besides, Trouble has newborn; you and Gianna are both pregnant. Another baby is not needed in the mix right now. Between the mommy and auntie duties I already have I’m good.”
“I feel you; I ended up with this many kids by default. It’s not like I’m just out popping babies out.”
“True, what is going on with baby boy’s mama anyway?”
“Nothing, she meets Trouble somewhere every Saturday to see him and it’s going to continue to be like this until she gets it together.”
After Nicki did all that bullshit at our house Trouble took it to the family lawyer I told him about and filed to get custody of Malachi. He was awarded temporary custody with Nicki only getting supervised visits with him on Saturdays.
I feel bad for a little bit because Malachi is her child and I remember how I felt when Cameron told me he was going to go for full custody. That shit eventually faded away because Nicki brought it all on herself, nobody told her stupid ass to come to my house drunk causing a ruckus.
“You don’t go to their meetups?”
“No, I don’t need to see that bitch. I’m trying to avoid stress not have the shit sitting right across from me.”
“Well I hope y’all get all that baby mama shit worked out. The kids are good right? I know you said Dyce was still acting different.”
“Yeah, that same funk he was in around Christmas time is back and its worse.”
Dyce and Darius’ fourth birthday is this weekend coming up and Dyce isn’t happy. He was fine up until a few days ago then his attitude flipped the script. He acted the same way around the Holidays. The closer it got to Christmas the worse his attitude got. I know it’s because his father isn’t here and I don’t know what to do about it because that’s not something I can fix.
“You’re still having their birthday party here?”
“Yeah, Trouble’s mother and Alex are going to come over and help me decorate the house that morning while he takes them out to get haircuts and stuff.”
“What’s the theme?”
“Paw Patrol, i got somebody to dress up like the damn dogs to keep the kids occupied or whatever. I let them both invite five people from their class to be there so it won’t just be family. It’s going to be really cute and annoying at the same time.”
“Aww, those are your babies you know you love spoiling them.”
“Spoil my ass, the most money I’m spending is going to be on decorations and that’s only because of how I am.” I don’t like for things to be half ass, if I’m going to do I’m going in for it. It was going to be like a damn Marvel fest in this bitch when I’m done.
“Hopefully it’ll have Dyce is a better mood.”
“I don’t know what to do about it. I know the hurt he feels about his dad being gone but he’s four years old. Is it weird that I didn’t expect it to hit him so hard?”
“I wouldn’t say it’s weird but some kids are more advanced than others. You’re finding the way he’s taking it weird because Darius isn’t acting the same way.”
“Well yeah, they’re the same age.”
“Yeah but they’re two totally different kids. I’m not saying Darius is stupid because he’s smart too but Dyce is like another level of smart. How many 3 year olds talk and acts the way he does?”
“I just thought of it as him being too damn grown,” I shrugged my shoulders.
“No he’s smart so he knows what his father being dead means and it’s hurting him. Ooh and look just like you instead of just being hurt he’s turning it into anger.” She said then looked at me with a side eye.”
‘What? Why you looking at me like that?”
“I used to think Dyce was like Uncle Darius but now that I really pay attention I’m seeing that he’s just like you.”
“What?” I looked at her confused.
“Dyce acts just like you nigga, you heard me.”
“I don’t know about all of that.”
“Yes you do Dyce is like you, stubborn, mean, and short- tempered. Darius is just like Prophet, he doesn’t listen to no damn body with his hard headed ass but he’s a good kid.”
“Darnell shut up and just tell me what I’m supposed to about him and his attitude.”
“Talk to him, and I mean really talk to him Millz. Don’t think that because he’s only 3 that he doesn’t understand certain shit. That little boy is far from stupid, he’s smart and he understands the things going on around him. You better recognize that shit.”
***
Looking down at my side I smiled when I saw Karma with her arms wrapped about my leg. The rest of the kids were running around the living room having fun but she was off to the side. I knew it was only because Dyce and Darius were busy with their friends from school and Zaria wasn’t here yet.
It’s been a little over a month since Karma has officially moved in with us. I have custody right now and I plan on going for full adoption pretty soon. One thing about Karma is she’s really shy; it takes her a cool minute to warm up to people. Once she’s comfortable her personality really shines through. Karma literally has to be the sweetest little girl I’ve ever come in contact with and I always wonder where the hell that comes from because both of her birth parents were far from sweet.
Fortunately for me she has a good relationship with her brothers; she’s obsessed with both Malachi and Trouble. If she isn’t up under me she’s following Trouble around the house and he loves every minute of it.
“What’s wrong?” I asked her.
“I want a hotdog,”
“Okay go in the kitchen and tell Siah to give you one.” She nodded then ran out the room.
“She is so cute,” Imani said while she held Malachi in her arms. ”What is a Siah though? Who is that?”
“Trouble, she can’t pronounce Messiah too correctly so she calls him Siah.” I answered her.
“Oh, what do Darius and Dyce call him?”
“His name, well Darius calls him by his name. Dyce hasn’t really been fucking with him too heavy.” I said while shaking my head.
“Why not?”
“He’s not Cameron,” I said simply.
Before Cameron’s death Dyce was fine around Trouble, he would talk to him and everything. After his dad was gone he distanced himself from Trouble; he rarely speaks to him at all and I know it’s because he’s still mourning the death of his father. I leave it alone for now because I understand but the moment his little ass crosses the line we’re going to have an issue.
“Aww poor baby, you need to talk to Dyce. That boy walks around looking depressed.”
“I know I’m going to handle it.” I told her just as the doorbell rang. I got up and walked out of my perfectly decorated living room and went to open the door.
“Hey munchkin,” I smiled when my eyes landed on Zaria. I got down as low as I could and hugged her. Once I let her go she went running to the living room.
“You got a house full huh? It’s mad cars outside; we had to park around the corner.” Darnell said in a joking tone when she and Xavier walked in.
“Yeah which means I have a few of melanin-deficient people in here so keep it cool. I don’t need these bitches talking shit about me at PTA meetings and shit.” Dyce and Darius invited 10 kids from their class to the party so it was 10 sets of parents in my house right now. 5 out of those 10 were white which is weird because I’m not used to entertaining white folks I’m not making money off of. keeping their cool. As long as they kept it that way we’re good.
“I got you,”
“Where’s Trouble?”
“I put him on hotdog duty, as a matter of fact Xavier you can go help him. Please.” I smiled at him.
“I should let his ass do it by himself but I got you.” He started to walk towards the kitchen patting his pockets then stopped. “Shit I forgot my phone in the car I’ll be back then I’ll go help him.” He kissed Darnell’s cheek then went out the front door closing it behind him.
Darnell and I went into the living room where the other parents were sitting down talking among st each other.
“This is really cute; damn can you do Zaria’s birthday for me?” Darnell asked me as she looked around the living room.
“Or nah,” I answered.
“That’s messed up,” She shook her head at me.
“No it’s not. Oh we can do their parties together; Karma’s is a week before Zaria’s.”
“She’s a Leo too?”
“Yeah, it’ll be way easier that way instead of us both throwing big parties. We can just do one nice cute one; they’re only a year apart and joined at the hip already so I know they like the same things.
“Cool with me, less money for me to spend.”
“Cheap ass,” I chuckled.
“Millz,” I looked up to see it was Kason calling me. “Trouble said are you ready to give out cake?”
“Yeah,” I looked over at Darius and the boys he was playing with but Dyce wasn’t with him.
“Is Dyce in the kitchen?”
“Nah, he never came in there.”
“Alright, tell him I’m ready but give me a minute.” I got up and went upstairs to see if he dipped off up there.
When I got to his and Darius’ bedroom I opened the door and saw him lying on his bed.
“Dyce,” I said his name but he didn’t move. I went over to the bed and turned him over. When I saw tears on his face I got extremely confused, he was just fine and playing downstairs.
“What’s wrong? Why are you crying?”
“I want my daddy,” He said in a low voice but I heard him loud and clear as if he screamed it at the top of his lungs. Honestly it hurt me because I can’t fix it, there’s nothing I can do about his dad not being here.
I pulled him onto my lap the best way I could despite my stomach poking out.
“I know you want your dad. I want my dad a lot of times too. You know what Uncle Nasir told me when I used to cry for mine?”
“What?”
“That he’s watching everything I do, and he wants to be happy. I know your dad wants you happy too, he wouldn’t want you sad and crying on your birthday.”
“Why is he in heaven?”
“He’s in heaven because a very bad man hurt him; he was too hurt to stay here so God took him back to Heaven with him.”
“Is the bad man going to hurt you too?”
“No, thanks to Messiah and your Uncle Vick he’s never going to hurt anybody ever again.” I answered him then kissed his forehead. “I know you miss your dad and I know it hurts your feelings that he’s not here but I promise it’s going to get better, okay?”
“Okay,” he nodded his head. “Is Siah your boyfriend?”
“Yeah, I thought we talked about that already?” I asked with a laugh.
“Is he your husband?”
“No, but he probably will be one day if he plays his cards right.”
“Is he my new daddy? I don’t want a new one.”
“Dyce what are you talking about?”
“Dari said Siah is our new dad,”
“Is that why you’ve been acting funny? You think he’s trying to replace your father?” I asked, it wasn’t even really directed towards him; it was more so a rhetorical question. I figured that’s why he’s been distant from Trouble lately but he’s basically confirming it for me now.
Before I could say anything else the bedroom door closing caught our attention. We both looked up to see Trouble standing there.
Trouble
“How long have you been standing there?” Millz asked me when she and Dyce looked up.
“That doesn’t matter. Let me speak to him for a minute.”
Hearing him ask his mother if I was his new dad really put things in perspective for me. For the last few weeks he’s been acting different. He wasn’t really talking to me or coming near me period. I went in front of her and kneeled down so I was face to face with Dyce. I figured it was because of how he feels about his father so I never said anything; this whole thing just gave me the confirmation I needed.
“Go ahead and speak I’m not stopping you.”
“I mean as is you go downstairs and check on everything while I talk to him.” I could tell she wanted to fight me so she could be nosy but she was taking her ass downstairs.
“Millz, go downstairs.” I said again just to let her know I was dead serious. She took one look at my facial expression then nodded. She eased Dyce off her lap then I pulled her up from the bed.
“Don’t be up here all day,” she said before opening the room door and leaving out.
I sat on the bed then pulled Dyce in front of me so we were face to face. “Listen to me; I don’t want you to think I’m trying to take your father’s place because I’m not. You have a father and he loved you very much; I love your mother and a big part of loving her means loving her children. I’m not your dad, you don’t have to call me dad if you don’t want to but I am going to be here for you, your brother and sister. Okay?”
He nodded looking me straight in my eyes. It was fucking with me a little bit because I didn’t know if he was trying to see if I was serious or if he was the one trying to send a message.
“We good? You alright now?”
“Yeah, we good.” I held my fist out for a pound and he gave me one. I kissed his forehead then stood up.
“Alright come on so you can have some birthday cake.”
“Can I open my presents?” He asked as we walked out of his room.
“After everybody is done with their cake it’s fine with me.”
We went down to the living room with everybody else. Millz lit the candles and turned off the lights so everybody could sing happy birthday to the boys.
After giving out cake I wanted to get to these gifts so these kids could get the fuck out of my house before that cake fully kicks in and they tear some shit up.
***
“Thanks for helping me cleaning up man, I appreciate it.” I told Xavier when we got done getting the living room back to normal. Everyone was long gone but he stayed back to help me clean up.
“It’s nothing; I knew you weren’t going to let Millz clean shit up so I figured I could help while Darnell kept her busy.” He told me.
“Is this really life man?” I asked with a laugh. “I’m living with a woman and four kids with another one on the way.”
He laughed shaking his head. “Aye sometimes life catches you off guard. Look at me; I’ll be a married man come next year.”
“Shit if things work out the way they’re supposed to I’m going to be right behind you.”
“I’m happy you two niggas finally stopped playing, dramatic as a muthafucka but liked each other that whole damn time.”
“Everybody can’t be you and Darnell man,” I said thinking back on how Xavier and Darnell got together. It’s actually finny because he was on her from day 1. I vividly remember him telling her she was going to be his wife, and his ass was right.
“I wasn’t about to play with that girl, I knew what I wanted and went for it. It took you a minute but you got it together so that’s all that matters.”
“You right about that.”
“I’m about to be outta here, I know Z upstairs knocked out.”
“Aight, how’s the thing you put in the basement?”
“Cool, I checked on it a minute ago. Darnell aint said shit to her either so you’re good.”
“Good lookin’ man,” We slapped hands then he went upstairs to get Darnell and Zaria. When they came back down he was carrying a sleeping Zaria in his arms and Darnell was behind him yawning like she had a long day or some shit.
Once they were gone I went upstairs to the bedroom where Millz was sitting up in the bed on her laptop.
“What are you doing?” I asked her.
“Nothing, I’m just looking at some of these pictures. You’re done cleaning up?”
“Yeah but I got something for you.”
“Something for me?”
‘Yeah, well it’s partly for you and partly for the kids. I’ll be right back.” I went down to my man cave and went over to the cage and unlocked it.
“You ready to surprise your new mama?” I said to the all blue nose pit bull puppy I was holding. “I hope she likes you and don’t kick your ass out.” I went back upstairs but stopped in the hallway right by our room door.
Taking her ring from my pocket I hooked it on his dog collar then put him down. I opened the door just enough to let him inside and give me room to peek.
“What the fuck?” I heard Millz say after a few seconds of silence. “Fuck did a damn dog come from?” She got up off the bed went over to the dog and picked it up. She grabbed the collar and when she touched the ring and looked at it her mouth dropped so I took that as my cue to walk in.
Millz looked up at me with her mouth still wide open as I walked up to her. “Close your mouth baby.” I grabbed the ring off the dog collar, put him down then looked down into her eyes. “I love you, I love the way you take care of my son, I love the way you take care of your kids and I love them with everything in me. I respect you, I respect the woman you’ve grown into and I want you to be the one I spend the rest of my life with so,” I went down on one knee grabbing her left hand. “Will you marry me fat mama?” I asked making us both laugh.
“You get on my nerves,” she laughed wiping the tears from her face. “Yes I’ll marry you.” I slid the ring on her finger then stood up and kissed her on the lips. “You ready to become Mrs. Garnett?”
“Yeah I guess I ‘m ready for that,” she said with a big smile on her face. “I love you,”
“I love you too.”

We stopped fighting. (Newt Imagine)
She couldn't really explain at what exact time everything went to hell with him. Newt had already been nine months in the glade when she arrived. There weren't many gladers as now. Fifteen at most. Elizabeth had been the first girl but not the last one definitely. She thought maybe if she had been the only she-bean nothing would've happened and she could be in a good relationship with him these days. But things didn't work like she wanted. Things worked as the Creators wanted.
Within the first three months everybody knew they shared something. You could see it in their eyes, both hers and his. Something sparkled when they saw each other. The others gladers wouldn't say it often but at least once they had admitted they saw how Newt's eyes filled with some kind of magic when she looked at him. Or even when she smiled. They helpped each other to grow as better persons. It took some time at the begining of course, she wouldn't trust at the first. But when weeks went by, step to step they all learned how to keep working as a society. Then an almost imperceptible strong connection between she and him started to grow.
Eighteen months had passed since the beginning of the maze and everything kept growing, the Glade, the society (with some losses), the woods, the sistem of work. And so had their relationship. The gladers had started to bother them and make jokes about them. A small group annoyed Newt saying he was a coward for not asking her to be his girlfriend. He used to get really mad and tired of listening all of them talking about his life but she was always there to calm him down and change his mind. She talked to him till they laughed of the boys for talking all the time about them. She used to say they had nothing else to talk about. Thing is they were fine and pleased with whatever the level of the relationship was. They knew something happened between them. Oh hell... they knew perfectly well they felt a lot of amazing things for each other. They could literally feel the chemistry fluing. Everyone could honestly. But they felt comfortable, they didn't want to change things for the moment. They were happy and that was all that mattered for them.
All had seemed getting into place. At least she had allowed herself to think that, given they were still in the maze, but she was happy because of him. And vice versa. Now getting back to her wondering about being the only girl, almost every three or four months a girl was sent to the Glade. That wasn't the problem. First of all looking for girlfriends and boyfriends was no one's priorities, in second place even the new girls immediately noticed that thing happening between the couple and third of all sooner or later they always joined the rest of the people who made fun of them and wanted them to get together officially.
Problems arrived when the Creators sent a thirteen years old girl named Christianna. The moment the box's doors opened they all knew she was trouble. She was the youngest ever sent, she was already a crying mess, as anyone else you might think, but what made the difference is that the instant she saw everyone's heads popping up she started yelling like a newborn baby. Literally. And it didn't stop for the longest twenty minutes till Newtie got her to shut up and cry silently.... well better like sobbing.
That moment was historical for the Glade, someone should have recorded all the Gladers sighing in relief when the unbearables cries stopped. Gally even fell on his knees to the ground and thanked the Universe out loud with open arms. Maybe if Newt hadn't been too sweet or pacient to the little girl, she wouldn't have developed such an intense and childish crush on him. And Elizabeth would have saved herself all the bad times. But it's said over there that all those "what if" don't exist, what happened is the only thing that could have happened and it had a reason to be. So anyway little Chrissy had "fallen completely and utterly in love" with Newt. Of course at the beginning he took it as something platonic, he cared for the girl as a sister. He thought it was cute and he devoted a lot of his time to her.
Actually it wasn't that bad till Chrissy saw she had "competition". Soon it had started to bother her when she saw them together. When she saw how Newt hugged Elizabeth, when she paid attention he always had her grabbed by her hand, or that he smiled differently when he smiled to her. Also he spend most of his free time with her. So as any other child would have when jealous, she had begun to interrumpt their moments and make silly stuff.
It had happenend for the very first time in the bonfire of the greenie who came after Chrissy, while some were in the sand circle and others dancing, Minho, Elizabeth and Alby were talking and laughing at Minho's words. Newt had came behind her and slipped his arms around her waist resting his chin on her shoulder. She was still laughing when she had turned her head to look sweetly at him, her laugh calming down to a lovely smile. A smile full of love just for him. She had pecked his lips very quickly and they had continued listening to Minho, who of course had made a silly remark about what just happened.
Initially Chrissy had watched the scene with curiosity. Her brain had received new emotios she hadn't felt yet. She had kept her eyes on them while her brain processed the new information. A frown along with a pout had made an appearance on her face. She'd crossed her arms and with a pouty face she thought what to do about it. When a useful idea crossed her mind she'd immediately stood up and walked in Newt's direction. On the way she had prepared herself, got her eyes glassy and her pout had never faded out. She'd tugged at his hoodie from his back and he'd turned his head to watch her. When he noticed her crying eyes he'd let go of Elizabeth and he'd bended on his knees to look at her given she had her face looking down. He'd grabbed her gently by her shoulders and asked her subtly what had happened. She'd waited a second to answer, just to internally cheer he had gotten away from Elizabeth and to add more suspense to her lil show of fake sadness.
—I miss my parents... I don't want to be here Newtie.—she exaggerated even more her pout and inhaled sharply through her nose.
—Oh... it's okay sweetie. —he'd hugged her and she'd wrapped her arms around his neck. She'd looked up and saw Elizabeth looking at them with cuteness written all over her face. Which had surprised little Chrissy a bit. She thought it would bother her that Newt was now hugging her. She needed it to annoy the older girl. But she was determinated to make her plan work anyway. So she kept it going. Everytime they were together she would go to him with a lame excuse. First times it would be subtle and he wouldn't tell her no, he couldn't. But of course after some weeks it had begun to be a real pain in the ass.
Elizabeth had been working a lot in the Glade for two particular weeks where everyone had been kind of moody. For some reason the boys were a lil tense between each other and add a few girls in her period suffering cramps and bad moods too. So she hadn't seen Newt, who was overloaded with work too. Alby had been testing him to put him as Second In Comand. They'd barely greeted each others in the mornings when they were in different ways to or from breakfast or work. One of those mornings she had been sitting on a table drinking some coffee to wake herself up when Gally'd came and sat infront of her with his breakfast.
—So. How is your lover boy Liz? —he'd made one of his characteristics grimaces raising one eyebrow.
She'd been rubbing the tiredness from her eyes then looked up at him. —I don't know shank. We haven't really talked in a week or so... I have barely saw him actually. —her voice was a little raspy still. She'd laid her face on one hand holding her head trying not to fall asleep on the table.
—You look tired girl. —Liz had remained still looking at him with an expression that said 'seriously?'.
—Really? Maybe because I have been working my ass off... and why is everyone in such a bad mood? Even Fry almost snapped at me. —they both had looked at the boy at the back of the kitchen yelling at the last Greenie.
—I don't know shank but you're right, they are all at the edge. —Gally'd looked around at the other tables to watch the gladers. —Then I'm the "grumpy" one. —Liz'd laughed at him as she stood up and patted his friend on his big shoulder before heading out to the Gardens. When she was arriving her area of work Newt'd walked in a quick pace in front of her. If she hadn't stopped he would've crashed her. —Hey —she'd mumbled. He had looked at her never stopping his steps and answered an empty "hey".
—Well good morning to you too, how have you been? I'm fine thanks for asking —she pretended a conversation with him in a low voice as she grabbed some seeds.
—You're chatting with imaginary friends yet Liz? You're ready to go to the Maze now —Zart'd laughed as he patted her back as a greeting. She'd smiled back. —Hi Zart, good morning.
One more week had passed with a lot of hard encounters between gladers. Loads of hard work, bad quality sleep and poor social skills. Finally a new Greenie would arrive that day. Alby had gathered them all while having breakfast and spoke to them.
—I know there had been a few tough weeks with extra work and we have been all a bit... susceptible because we are all tired but that has ended, good that? Relax a bit, get back to normal pace and don't get over stressed about anything. We'll have a new Greenie today and as always a good fun relaxing bonfire tonight. Thank you for being pacients. I'll help Fry so tonight you'll have some nice tasty meals in gratitude. —everyone'd begun shouting in excitment and happiness, some boys'd whistled and hit the tables making annoying loud noises. Alby'd smiled and nodded with his head.
Liz had been done with her part and she was sitting on the Tower with her legs hanging at the edge. She'd been getting a real break from work and relaxing her body and mind watching the view from the highs. She had been so deep in her world she hadn't heard Newt coming up the stairs. She'd turned to see who was when he'd opened the gate from the floor. She'd gave him a small smile and turned back around. He'd made himself comfortable next to her in the same position.
—Hey... —as she hadn't answer he'd kept talking. —I'm sorry I've been absent the last... three weeks but I'm here now and ready to make it up for the time apart from you.... —he'd smiled at her and so had she.
She'd pushed him lightly by his shoulder —I missed you, Slinthead. —Newt laughed as he slided his left arm to hug her and drag her against him. After he kissed her head as she hugged him back by his torso. They had lingered there for a long time watching the sky change colours and the life in the glade get ready for the party. Chrissy was a ball of fire by dinner time. She had been watching them and her young blood was boiling. She had intended to interrumpt them again but one of the girls, the closest to Liz, foresaw her intentions and fooled the little girl for once.
—Hey lovebirds! Dinner is ready! We have a Newbie to welcome don't be rude and come down to show some manners! —they'd heard Alby's voice from behind so they were poking out their heads to see him, Alby'd smiled at them and turned around to walk away from the Tower and back to the crowd.
They'd looked at each other as a silent agreement to go with the others. She'd been ready to stand up but he'd grabbed her face quickly and kissed her with so much love she had wanted to froze the moment and stay like that forever. After the sweet kiss she'd smiled and stood up. Liz'd given him her hand for him to take it and help him stand on his feet. Her smile had never faded.
