I was talking about Sieg's type on his blog and it just occurred to me that Clara would indeed fall into it
Now I wouldn't ship with myself lol.
But I guess on some very primal level, he would not mind if their grandfathers did arrange for them to marry. He does think she is very cute.
Clara doesn't like him like that though LOL so...that might be a bit awkward. She'd be thinking of another man the whole time.

the waiting game
Lol, my laptop is at 2%. Look, I’ll be back in an hour to do my masterlist, I just really, really need to get this done because it should’ve been done many months ago.
It’s fine. Umm... yeah, nothing else to say :)
Trigger Warnings: child abuse, references to child abuse, death threats from a parent, bombings
read on ao3!
Jason Gideon always told new recruits that certain things about their jobs got easier with time and experience. He told them their hands would remain steady when they fired a gun and that the noise would not always make them flinch. He told them they would get used to late-night calls and sleepless nights. that they wouldn’t always find it so difficult when the people they loved walked away, unable to handle not knowing what was going to happen.
A lot of things about their job got easier.
The waiting game only got harder.
Because you learnt things
Gideon had been on the team longer than the other members put together. he knew what happened when each of his members ended up in the hospital. He’d made a point of taking Reid each time, just so he could be sure his order of events was correct.
Adrian Bale meant he’d had six less agents to remember.
That was supposed to have been the last time Aaron Hotchner ended up in the hospital, unconscious and barely breathing. Gideon had vowed to himself that no matter how difficult it was, Hotch would make it home to Haley and Jack every night.
But he’d failed.
Aaron hadn’t wanted Elle going home. he’d taken her to the same hotel Haley was in. Elle had felt a little uncomfortable being in the adjoining room, but her discomfort quickly faded. Haley seemed used to looking after Aaron’s second family and Jack was still willing to be held by strangers.
He’d swung by her place to make sure it was safe.
It hadn’t been, but he was the best shot in the BAU. No, not just the BAU, the entire Quantico building. He was so good that when he demanded that they passed Reid with flying colours, nobody questioned him.
There had been- in his words- a small scuffle but he was fine.
Everyone was too exhausted to argue or even notice. But Gideon knew he should’ve said something. He’d known Aaron Hotchner since he had been dragged in by David Rossi, somehow bright-eyed and cynical at the same time.
He should’ve known Aaron was more hurt than he was willing to let on. He always was. and he should have realised before he sent him into another building that contained an innocent civilian and somebody that they couldn’t really profile. Somebody that they couldn’t plan the endgame of.
It felt like Adrian Bale all over again.
Only everyone had known Aaron was going to survive the moment he pulled the oxygen mask off his face, demanded to know who was representing Bale in his trial before passing out again.
Now... none of that could be confirmed.
He hadn’t been able to stay conscious enough to ask for Haley.
“Tell me what happened,” he asked again. Morgan and Reid had refused the other six times he’d asked them. Six hours Hotch had been in the hospital. He still wasn’t awake.
“Gideon this isn’t going to help anyone, least of all you,” Morgan sighed.
“Tell me,” he demanded.
“He was carrying Rebecca out of the building because it was on fire. Then he suddenly dropped her on the grass and keeled over, one hand pressed to his side. Morgan grabbed Rebecca, got her out. I tried to help Hotch, but he told me to run. And I did. And then the building exploded and-”
And that was when he’d got the phone call from Reid. Morgan had phoned the ambulance the moment Hotch fell. Reid had phoned Gideon, barely able to string two sentences together. It was as though his eidetic memory and IQ had just been taken from him.
Reid looked away, unable to say another word. His cheeks were stained with tears, his foot-tapping the only comfort he was able to provide himself.
“He wouldn’t have got hurt if I’d gone home,” Elle whispered.
“You can’t blame yourself,” JJ murmured, but she sounded distant. Like she was trying to stay in liaison mode but couldn’t. She hadn’t even been with the BAU for a year the last time Hotch had ended up in the hospital. She’d been terrified then. Now she just looked tired.
“You shouldn’t blame yourself,” Gideon added, wishing he could see what was going on. But the door to the room Hotch was in had been closed, the curtains pulled around. “If you’d gone home, in the state you were in, you wouldn’t have won. It’d be you in there, and Hotch would be pacing outside blaming himself.” Besides, he thought to himself. The only person that should be blaming themselves was him. He was supposed to have Hotch’s back. He was the one that was supposed to be able to read all his tells without even having to try and profile him.
Hotch was still in surgery. In all the cases that had ended with Hotch landing himself in the hospital, the surgeries had been minor. When Adrian Bale had struck, he’d spent four hours in surgery. In Gideon’s opinion, the injuries sustained from that had been more serious.
Hotch had been in surgery for six and a half hours. That didn’t fit the pattern. It didn’t fit the pattern and Gideon knew this time that it wasn’t a good thing.
“You shouldn’t blame yourself either,” a soft voice said from behind them.
“Haley,” he whispered.
Haley gave them all a hesitant smile. It was clear she’d been sobbing and was only being held together by the thinnest thread. “How are you all holding up?”
The laugh Garcia let out was slightly hysterical. “Mrs Hotchner, we’re not important. You are. So is your husband. How are you doing?”
The corners of her mouth turned downwards. “I don’t feel like it’s hit me yet. I’ve known for a very long time there’s a chance he won’t come down and I’ve always prepared for that, but it just doesn’t feel real. I keep expecting him to walk out that door with his arm in a sling and a goofy smile because of the pain medication.”
“We’ll be here when it does hit. And we’ll help in any way we can,” JJ promised.
Haley nodded, shaking as she wrapped her arms around herself. “I know. Aaron always said that he wasn’t afraid of dying. Not when he knew his team would be there to tell Jack stories and stop me from resenting the only piece of him that I would have left.”
“Where is the little one?” Morgan asked, both to lighten the mood and to change the subject. They’d never realized how much Hotch loved them all. How much he trusted them.
“With my sister. We didn’t- after Boston- oh my god, it’s just like Boston isn’t it? He’s going to, he won’t- I-” she whimpered, the dam finally breaking.
It was Garcia that reacted first. It was a stark contrast, Penelope’s brightness against the subdued pastels of Haley’s pajamas- and Gideon wanted to be sick, she must have been ready to go to sleep when she got the phone call- but it was needed.
When Garcia pulled away, not quite letting go, Haley wiped her eyes.
“I’m sorry. It’s just, after Boston, we agreed that Jack- we hadn’t picked his name then, god it feels like yesterday, that we wouldn’t let him see us in the hospital. We wanted to let him believe his parents were invincible for as long as possible.”
Gideon knew that promise. he also knew that Hotch had promised to step down once Gideon returned. He had been selfish when he’d asked him not to.
“He’ll make it out,” Elle said.
She hadn’t witnessed Adrian Bale’s attack on Gideon. That’s how she was able to stay so positive. But everyone else had. They’d watched as twenty-two civilians had been taken hostage, as Hotch had gone into the building to try and negotiate with him, despite Gideon explicitly forbidding him to do so because Haley was waiting at home for him.
That was the one and only time Hotch’s anger had been directed at a member of the team. His eyes had darkened, his voice pitched lower than they’d ever heard it. He’d looked Gideon in the eye, no longer the scared recruit, and told him to go fuck himself.
He’d walked into the building. Without a vest. The only weapon being the gun in the holster that was attached to his belt. One of the hostages had been forced to take it from him. Aaron had given them the same encouraging smile he gave to all the victims they saved, to all the distraught family members that were scared of being the cause of their loved one’s end.
Adrian Bale had taken one look at him and laughed. That had thrown Hotch off. He had thought that seeing the lead profiler of the elite BAU team would make him sweat and give him what he wanted. He said as much.
Adrian Bale said that when he looked at Aaron Hotchner, he didn’t see the lead profiler or bad cop. He didn’t see the head of the Seattle field office or one of the best shots SWAT had ever seen. He didn’t even see the hotshot prosecutor he’d began as.
Aaron asked him what he did see.
Bale’s response haunted everyone. He said he saw a boy too afraid of his own feelings to ever truly love anyone. He said the only reason Hotch had walked in was because he was too much of a coward to leave his pregnant wife but if he died in the line of duty, well that was different. He said Aaron loved Jason Gideon and all he wanted was his approval.
The camera was grainy, but the tremble in Aaron’s hands was unmistakable.
Morgan had tried to run in. It was Gideon’s arm that had stopped in. It was Gideon that had said they needed to wait to get Hotch out. It was Gideon that had misread Aaron’s body language and sent six of his best agents in.
They didn’t need eidetic memories to have the look of complete fear on Gideon’s face when Hotch was blown away branded in their brain forever. Or the scream he’d released when they finally uncovered the body, the rise and fall of his chest barely noticeable. Or to remember how Haley had arrived two days later because of problems with flight bookings, face devoid of any colour, the swell of her stomach a stark reminder of everything that would be lost if Hotch didn’t pull through.
Elle Greenaway only knew SSA Hotchner: the man that stared down unsubs, barked orders at everyone, carried a back-up weapon because he was just that good and never smiled. She didn’t know him as Aaron, the man that hated hospitals so much that every time he regained consciousness, the doctors had been forced to sedate him for his own benefit. Or that the only person that had been able to touch him was Haley, his mouth trying to form her name but never making it past the first syllable, despite all his years of spinning stories to a jury.
Or that the only reason Hotch carried a back-up was because very few people would notice it was there. John Blackwolf had thrown him off, made him doubt again. Gideon had found it difficult to convince him everything was fine, so he didn’t. He just dropped him home to Haley and watched from his car as Hotch became Aaron, falling apart in Haley’s arms.
“I know,” Haley whispered, pulling Gideon from his memories.
“Would you like anything to drink? I can go and grab you a coffee if you want,” he said, needing to do something other than watch his team fall to pieces. Aaron was the one that sat and reminded them they were human, that it wasn’t their fault. It was the reason they would call him mom. Gideon was just there.
Haley shook her head. “I want you to be here. In case you’re needed.”
Because of course he would be. Haley Hotchner was Aaron’s wife, so she was automatically listed as his medical proxy. But Aaron never wanted her to be burdened by his job any more than she already was. Which meant if something happened in the field. the doctors were to automatically defer to Gideon. Haley was consulted if it was something non-case related.
“Of course,” he said, as though it was the simplest thing in the world.
“Excuse me? Are you all here for Aaron Hotchner?”
“Yes,” Haley said, the first to find their voice as the profilers tried to work out whether the news they were about to be given was good or bad.
“He’s out of surgery, there were no complications there and we’ve got him through the worst of it. But he’s still not woken up, and his breathing is shallow, hence the reason we haven’t taken him off the ventilator yet. So as much as we want to hope for the best, I want you to understand there is a chance he may not make it. His body has been put through a lot in the past year.”
Gideon did not want to think about every injury Hotch had been forced to suffer through since returning. The collar of his shirts had never quite hidden the bruised skin where Perotta had touched him.
“Can we see him?” Haley asked. She looked so young. So vulnerable. Gideon swallowed. She’d never been forced to hide her emotions the same way Hotch had. She’d never been afraid of being profiled. He doubted she ever had been, Hotch was too honourable.
“My colleagues are still treating him. I think it’d be better if we waited until he woke up. You should all get some rest, you look exhausted.”
Haley shook her head. “I’d like to be here.”
“Of course,” the doctor said, turning on their heel and walking away again.
“I’m just going to phone Jessica and ask her to keep Jack for a little longer,” she said, voice trembling.
Everyone nodded and chose not to comment when Haley vanished for ten minutes, returning with red-rimmed eyes.
“He trusted me to save his life when I hadn’t even passed my gun qualification,” Reid said suddenly.
“I know. He told me about that. He said he knew you could do it, that it would just take a bit of a patience and maybe an extremely stressful situation. Apparently, you do your best work under intense terror. Not that he wanted the two of you to end up hostages He also blamed himself when you didn’t pass. Thought he’d scared you so much when you were practicing that you got in your head and just forgot everything, even though that’s impossible,” Haley responded.
Reid’s head jerked up in response. “He actually said that to you?”
Haley nodded. “He tells me about all of you. He sees Sean- you met him didn’t you, yes you did- in you. You’re both young. Got the whole world to explore and yet you chose to do the one thing nobody expected.”
“I bet he always has bad stories about me,” Morgan teased.
“He trusts you. More than you think he does. And he wants you to trust him as well. He doesn’t listen when I say you do; you just show it in a different way. All you profilers show things in a different way. That’s what I’ve learnt. That there are some things you will never see the same way.”
“What does he say about me?” Elle asked, genuinely curious. She’d only met Haley in passing; the day they bought Jack in. And the time they’d spent in the hotel could hardly count.
“A lot. He’s scared this job is going to take your sense of humour away. He thinks that you’re going to wake up one day and hate him for letting this job consume your life. He worries about all of you though.”
“He worries about all of us?” that was JJ.
“Of course. He thinks that he’s taking your chances at happiness away from you by calling you in at ungodly hours, disrupting your vacations, making you look at what happens to happy couples and innocent children- I really shouldn’t say anymore I just always assumed you knew.”
“We don’t profile team members,” Elle said, slightly defensive.
“I didn’t think you did. I just assumed he spoke to you,” Haley said, but there was no accusation in her tone. Just the smallest amount of surprise and confusion.
The members of the team started staring awkwardly in various directions, suddenly aware of how little Hotch actually shared with them. Only Morgan had even known Sean existed, and that was only because he’d knocked on the office door that one time.
Loud shouts from the room Hotch was in drew their attention. Everyone immediately stood, Haley and Jason moving forward so they would be the first person the doctor spoke to. They were too far away to determine the specifics of the conversation, but from the volume and range of voices they could hear told him it was a group of doctors and nurses.
The shouting stopped soon after though, and Gideon immediately knew that the silence could only mean that Hotch had been sedated. A part of him was glad the other man had woken up, but he was mostly wondering it that was the last time it would happen.
A few minutes passed. Garcia was humming to herself. Morgan was sat, staring at the wall, eyes glazed over as he ran through every moment that led up to the explosion. JJ was biting her nails. Gideon wanted to tell her to stop but he couldn’t. That was what Hotch did. Haley tugged her hand away and grasped it. Elle placed her hand on Reid’s knee. He stopped tapping his foot, looking up at her with the same confused look he wore when someone referenced pop culture. Elle smiled slightly. Gideon stood to the side. He didn’t deserve them.
The same doctor as before exited the room.
“He keeps asking after his father,” she said.
Haley immediately jumped out of her chair and went over before Gideon could get a single word out. Hotch had never mentioned his father after ending up in the hospital. Sometimes he asked if Sean was safe. Most of the time he asked for Haley. Never once had he mentioned his parents. Jason did not know whether that was a good thing or a bad thing, but despite every part of him wanting to hope, he knew he was aware of the answer and that he was just too cowardly to admit it
“You have to let me in there,” she said.
“Mrs Hotchner with all due respect-”
“No. I know my husband’s medical history. You can’t keep sedating him, not when he needs to be conscious to answer your questions and not when there are only so many drugs his body can handle. But he isn’t asking after his father because he loves him. He’s asking where he is because he thinks he needs to work out how much more time he’s got before he needs to start pretending again. Let me in there, and he’ll cooperate.”
The doctor seemed to understand that there was no way they’d be able to win that particular battle. They sighed, then extended one arm to the door. Haley ran into the room, everyone else congregating outside.
“The painkillers will wear off in a few minutes,” the doctor told them all.
Haley nodded, immediately going to kneel beside Hotch’s bed, gently taking one hand and holding it tight, He was paler than anyone had ever seen him. His stomach was a mess of bruises and burns, some recent, others marks from a childhood that never should have happened.
Gideon watched, tears forming in his eyes. Hotch looked younger with his eyes closed. The pressures of the year seemed to fade, only to be made even clearer by the damage not covered by the hospital gown.
“Why isn’t he waking up?” Reid asked, five minutes later. His voice was shaky.
Haley’s grip tightened minutely. “Baby?” she whispered.
Aaron didn’t move. His heartrate remained steady, the beeping of the monitor the only sound that filled the room.
The doctors and nurses were preparing to do the rest of what they needed to do. Gideon felt his own heart slowing down. Aaron’s heart was beating but his eyes weren’t opening and the rise and fall of his chest was a shallow as when they’d first found him after Bale and none of this fit the pattern-
“I didn’t mean it, I swear, none of this was supposed to happen-” Aaron murmured, head rolling to the side.
Haley gasped and let go of his hand, just for a moment, before she realised what she’d done and grasped it again. “Aaron?”
Aaron’s eyes fluttered open. He struggled to keep them like that. “Where am I?” he whispered, southern accent coming out slightly.
That fit the pattern of his recovery.
“Mr Hotchner, you’re in Lockhart Hospital. Can you tell me your birth name and date of birth?” a nurse asked, voice firm but gentle.
“Hospital? No, I can’t be in the hospital, he’ll find me. He said he’ll kill mama and make me watch but I swear I didn’t come here myself, where is he, I can’t let him hurt them, I can’t-”
One of the members of staff prepared an injection.
“Don’t,” Haley warned, shifting closer to him.
“Mrs Hotchner-”
“Just a moment. I promise. Hey sunshine. It’s me. It’s Haley. You’re safe, I promise. He can’t hurt you. He’s dead now. He’s not here, and nobody is going to hurt you. Everybody just wants you to get better. Your team are here. You remember them right? Agent Gideon, Doctor Reid. Garcia and Morgan and JJ and Elle? Yes, you remember them. Well they’re all waiting for you to recover because they love you. I love you too. And nobody is going to hurt you. Do you understand?”
“Haley?” Aaron whispered.
Haley nodded. “I’m right here sunshine. And I’ll be right here when you’re ready to recover. So take a deep breath with me, that’s so good, I’m so proud of you sunshine, just keep doing that. Are you going to close your eyes? Okay. Just please wake- when you wake up, remember that you’re safe. Can you do that for me?”
“Safe,” Aaron repeated as his eyes closed, unable to take the pain he must’ve still been in.
Haley didn’t let go of her husband.
One of the nurses tapped her shoulder then quietly asked if she’d be okay waiting outside as they prepared the room for the next time he woke up, as they were no longer keeping him sedated and he seemed to be breathing himself, which meant they could move on.
Haley nodded and let go of Hotch’s hand. When she faced the team, Garcia immediately embraced her, and she started crying again.
“Let’s go back to the waiting room,” Gideon said, unable to handle the sight any longer. Garcia didn’t let go of Haley, choosing instead to wrap her arm around her as they left.
“When Aaron was seventeen, his dad broke his arm and then refused to let him go to the hospital. He passed out in the middle of a lesson the next day and the school were forced to call an ambulance. He didn’t become coherent till they got there, and he wouldn’t stop screaming. I’d snuck in and was the only person he wouldn’t flinch away from,” she said once they’d all sat down.
Elle’s jaw dropped. Garcia started crying herself. Morgan looked away. JJ and Reid grabbed each other’s hands. They’d all assumed something had gone on in Hotch’s childhood- he never spoke about his family, he was always rougher with unsubs that they profiled as being abusive fathers- but there was a difference between making the inference and hearing it from the person that knew him best.
“He’s lucky to have you,” Jason commented.
“Allowing him to feel his emotions and letting him know that he’s safe is doing the bare minimum,” Haley said.
He didn’t have a comeback to that.
Thirty minutes passed before the doctor came back. It was good news. The profilers could tell.
“He’s awake and stable enough to receive visitors now,” they said.
Everyone jumped out.
“Go on,” Gideon said to Haley, who dashed into the room and hugged her husband.
He made a small sound of discomfort, but still tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear. “Hi Haley,” he whispered.
She laughed, sitting on the bed beside him. “You’re okay.”
He nodded. “Yeah. I’m okay.”
The rest of the team filed into the room. Reid looked ready to cry again.
“Spencer, you cannot blame yourself. I told you to run because I wanted you to, and if you hadn’t, I’d be furious at you for always trying to be the hero. Elle, the same goes for you. I took you to the hotel. Nobody asked me to go to your house, so stop looking at me like Im about to break. I’ll be fine,” he said.
Hospital painkillers had always made him lose his filter.
Garcia started laughing. “I’m sorry, it’s not funny, but sir your accent is coming through and it’s so hard to take you seriously when you’re laid up in bed with your hair all mussed and your accent but you’re still trying to tell them off and, it’s just, it’s confirmation you’re going to be fine.”
Hotch gave her a grin. Haley ran her hand through his hair, messing it up further.
“Thanks Hotch,” Reid said. He rocked on the balls of his feet for a few moments before muttering something that sounded suspiciously like fuck it and he too went and hugged Hotch. Haley shifted slightly. Hotch raised his arms to wrap around Reid’s back.
“Everything will be fine,” he whispered. “I promise.”
Reid pulled back with tears in his eyes but a smile on his face.
“No more close calls like that. You hear me?” Morgan chastised, patting Hotch’s shoulder.
Hotch rolled his eyes. “You aren’t the boss of me Morgan. I’m the boss of you.”
“Aaron,” Haley said.
He blushed, making everyone laugh. “Fine.”
The women of the team came over. Elle gave him a quick one-armed hug, whispering in Spanish so the rest of the team didn’t understand. Hotch wiped his eyes when she went to stand by the others. JJ hugged him gently, saying that he didn’t get to terrify them like that because he was mom and they needed him. Garcia’s heels made a comically loud sound as she walked over to him.
“You are the most self-destructive unit chief I know. But you’re also the most handsome, loving, sweet one as well. And I know you won’t stop putting your life on the line for our baby genius and chocolate thunder so let’s compromise: you can do dumb and reckless things but you’re not allowed to complain when we pamper you afterwards, okay?”
Hotch blinked a few times. “Sure Garcia.”
Garcia hugged him again, pressing a kiss to his forehead that left a pink mark behind. Haley laughed, which led to the analyst immediately shuffling over to the rest of their rag-tag family.
Gideon watched from the doorway as the rest of his team and Haley sat with Hotch, laughing and joking. He couldn’t bring himself to walk in there and comfort Hotch. Not when it had all been his fault. The team had saved an innocent girl. Hotch had pulled through again. There was a high that came with that, and he wasn’t about to ruin it for any of them.
But what happened when the high ran out?
Elle would realise her leader wasn’t the stoic man she once thought he was. Spencer and Derek would be forced to help Hotch pour his coffee and climb the stairs to his office because he couldn’t do it alone but he didn’t want to ask. Garcia would go home to an empty apartment, wondering which one of her family she’d almost lose next. JJ would have to deal with the media fallout of the case.
Haley would hold her husband, wondering how much more he would be able to give to his job before he broke. Before it broke them. Aaron would have more scars that he’d never be able to recover from.
Gideon would be forced to watch as they all returned to work, scared fractured but incapable of walking away. David Rossi had always said there would be people waiting in the wings to take over, but Gideon didn’t agree. Only the people that had seen the depths of depravity were willing to put themselves through the horrors of profiling.
Aaron looked up and met Gideon’s eyes. He looked terrified.
Gideon smiled. He had to.
But he knew.
He knew Elle would break. He could see she was already struggling with the guilt. He knew that one day, probably soon, he wouldn’t be able to look at his team without seeing their scars or the people he’d failed.
He knew Haley wouldn’t be able to handle her husband’s job forever.
Jason Gideon knew that each member of his team would fall in their own way. He did not know whether or not they would be able to get up. He did know, however, that it would be another round of the waiting game.
And it would only get harder.

So so- James gets sick (you decided how sick he is loll) and Walter/Stolas/both take care of him
Im sorry sickfics are just so wholesome
Takes place before William, Grelle and Ronald were reapers (or even alive at) – For the reaper realm is sort of more in a colonial era vibe, but in the human world it’s currently 1568.
James is a character that’s had one appearance in my Black Butler Fan-Comic Will to Live – Stolas is an upcoming character – and Walter is a fan character that’s formed on our discord server lol.
Hope you like this!!! I kind of hinted at Walter’s existence and helping, but I ended up writing more about Stolas trying to get James just to go heckinnn rest lol. Hope that’s okay!
=====
Anyone who worked anywhere within the reaper realm in England would tell you their general manager was being particularly nasty. There was a rumor going around that his eyes were turning red with rage, Red.
Stolas, being the current head manager of the London Reaper district of course ended up hearing about the rumor. One of those little things that would come up during coffee breaks. Sometimes rumors spread quickly, many of them ended up not being true or over exaggerated… all of them had been there are REALLY long time after all, and sometimes rumors were the only thing that made their grueling jobs a little bit interesting.
This one… however, made Stolas sigh, he knew James too well, if those under him are especially scared of him at the moment, something was up.
Many of his coworkers thought Stolas was insane for remaining cheery with James, or they feared him too by proxy. Stolas wasn’t stupid, he knew why everyone was scared of James – James did it on purpose for Christ’s sake. However, since he had come on some 200 years ago and had many an interaction with the guy, finding himself unphased by his scare tactics... (he had seen men much more monstrous than James after all), he couldn’t help but feel some sort of…. Sympathy? No, that might not be the word? Maybe sometimes he just got a glimmer of the kind of man James could be and wanted to reach out and pull that glittering little gem out. He just hoped he wasn’t seeing something that wasn’t there.
He gazed at the large grandfather clock ticking away in the corner of his office, such a device was new to him, but he had picked it up a little quicker than James had who had kept time by candle for much longer than most of them.
He had 10 more minutes before his break would be over…
Stolas closed his large book he had snuck in to read on his breaks, it was one on the Tudors he had gotten quite lost in. Normally more ancient societies piqued his interest, but it was harder to get good accounts… he half wished he could just explore those ancient cities and discover their secrets himself. But… alas… here he was, not that he could have gone far in his human life either.
He downed the last bit of his tea before sitting up, making sure his ink well was covered and his quill was secure for when he inevitably came back to work.
He walked out of the London office and down the hall, tapping on James’s office door cheerfully, barely waiting for a grunt before coming in.
“What do you want?” James accused, looking up from his paperwork.
Now he did look quite the sight, more tired and grouchy than usual – and judging from the redness of his nose, it was irritated.
“Well now, I had heard you were especially difficult to deal with, and now I know why!” Stolas said, pushing his glasses up his nose and grinning.
James sighed, leaning back and rubbing his left eye slightly, they looked a bit bloodshot.
“Maybe if everyone did their job correctly…”
“Yes, then you wouldn’t be so cross all the time, blah blah blah, I’ve heard the script.” He took a few steps forward, leaning on James’s desk, something only he seemed to get away with. “You’re sick.”
“You’re pissing me off.” James snipped back, baring his teeth.
Stolas shook his head. This man was like trying to be friendly to a wolf on a good day, a rabid one on a bad day.
“Why don’t you just take the day off James? If your sick its not as if you can help it.” Stolas offered.
“I can get up, I can walk, I haven’t sprouted any pustules, not that reapers could get such a horrible thing thank god…” He paused, rubbing his hands together as if having the urge to wash them. “Unless I keel over, I’m still coming into work. Any reaper disease can’t be serious, it won’t kill me.”
“You’re a stubborn man James.” Stolas said, deciding to state the obvious. “What does Walter think?” He asked, furrowing his brows.
Walter was supposedly a ghost from James’s old life that followed him around. Stolas wasn’t entirely convinced he existed, or if he was a ghost in the sense of something James had been through that haunted him, or perhaps was his way of coping with the state of things. He cared for James enough that he didn’t want to try and tell James what he was or wasn’t experiencing… he couldn’t see through his eyes after all. If Walter was real… well… maybe it was good that James still had someone around to keep him grounded. If he wasn’t… what could he really do about that?
“Walter can mind his own business too.” He growled stubbornly, seemingly reading the same sentence on his paperwork a third time over, getting more frustrated.
Stolas narrowed his eyes, he slammed his hands down on the desk briefly, startling James a bit as he suddenly crossed over to his side of the desk, leaning down from his decent height and pointing his finger only inches away from James’s face.
“Either you let me take you home willingly, or I pick you up and carry you kicking and screaming.” He said very seriously.
James’s eyes widened before turning into a glare, leaning up and meeting his gaze with his own threatening one. “You wouldn’t dare.”
“Wouldn’t I?” Stolas grinned.
James didn’t have time to run. He growled as Stolas tackled him and lifted him up out of his seat, having no problem lifting the bearded man up onto his shoulder.
“STOLAS SANTORI YOU PUT ME DOWN RIGHT NOW!” He barked.
Stolas chuckled, he could tell all of James’s teeth were razor sharp just from the tone of his voice.
“You stay out of this!” James then barked, seemingly pointing at thin air in irritation, and Stolas was almost sure the air got colder.
Stolas walked towards the door, ignoring James struggling. “Last chance, I can put you down and you can go with me and retain some dignity…”
James stiffened and stopped flailing before sighing and going limp. “Fine, FINE! Just put me down or I swear I’ll have you- GAH!!”
Stolas followed his order and let James fall off his shoulder, only barely catching his balance.
James breathed heavily before coughing a bit, trying to straighten his hair and jacket. “If… If I’m penalized for being gone today…”
“I’ll take full responsibility. You can say you were kidnapped.” Stolas responded, walking out into the hallway with James in tow.
“…If I were to say you kidnapped me and disrupted my work… you could be put on trial.”
Stolas simply slipped his glasses off, cleaning them as they walked. He knew the halls well enough by now he probably could have found his way around without being able to see at all.
“If it happens… it happens.”
“How can you be so calm about such a thing?” James snapped before sneezing, grumbling, and pulling a handkerchief out of his coat pocket to blow his nose into.
“If that’s my fate, who am I to argue with it. I prefer to do what I think is right James, not what is easy or safe. And right now… seeing you rested is what I believe is right.” He said, looking down at James sincerely as they walked out of the building.
James hung his head for a moment, grinding his teeth slightly before walking again to head to his assigned home, Stolas not far behind.
“You’re a fool.” He said simply, and quietly.
Stolas just laughed. “Maybe. Most people seem to think so for getting within 2 feet of you.” He said softly, nudging James with his arm.
James felt miserable, he was annoyed, and on some level, he was scared.
But despite all that… he smiled.

Remember that Time I said I would Show You that mock trope page I made?
Here it is.
IT’S ALL FOR FUN! And I do include references to actual RP’s, so you might find yourself in here lol!
Might as well post it here too for mobile purposes.
Kallion:
A Saiyan time patroller from Planet Vegeta.
Action Survivor: Just barely survived Planet Vegeta’s destruction due to being marooned on another planet.
Survivors Guilt: Big time, though she tends to play it off, if not outright denying that she has it. Kallion has…issues about the circumstances of her survival.
Innocent Blue Eyes: Compared to the more common dark eyes of other Saiyans, emphasizing her gentle nature.
Fish Out Of Temporal Water: Was born several years before Planet Vegeta’s destruction, but is now living in Conton City nearly a century later. Though she’s happy now, her early days at the time patrol made for a difficult adjustment.
Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Gentle girl to Giblet’s Brooding Boy.
Involuntary Shapeshifting: As any Saiyan who still has their tail, one look at the full moon will have her turning into a Great Ape in no time.
My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Downplayed, and largely averted. Kallion points out that while she was always far more gentle than what was typically expected of Saiyans, and she lacked that ruthless killer instinct, she is still a battle-crazed idiot. On the other hand, she theorizes that her experiences weren’t all that unique to begin with. I.e: Gine and Tarble.
All Girls Want Bad Boys: Between Giblet and, yes, technically Trunks as well, Kallion seems to have a type. The real kicker is that she doesn’t escape this platonically either– Bardock is a hell of a father figure to have. She even lampshades this herself; “How come I only ever get attached to emotionally constipated men?”
Scars are Forever: A prominent one on her left cheek. It’s unknown exactly what the circumstances were, but she assumed she got it while a Great Ape. Countless others are scattered all over her body as well.
Intergenerational Friendship: With Bardock, her mentor. He also happened to be her father’s best friend.
Proud Warrior Race Guy: Saiyan!
Sole Survivor: Of her crew, who left her behind and returned to planet Vegeta on Frieza’s orders. Needless to say, she was lucky to be abandoned.
Tyke Bomb: Typical of most Saiyan children.
Golden Super Power Mode: Super Saiyan, naturally
Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: It’s in the job description.
Dating Catwoman: Her and Giblet.
Action Mom: In the future, having kids doesn’t slow her down at all.
Mama Bear: Becomes fiercely protective of her baby boy Keel, a trait which only continues to grow in the future.
All-Loving Hero: Willing to give most people and creatures alike the benefit of the doubt….save for Frieza, Mira, Cell, Towa…obvious villains aside. Also loves animals.
Bad Powers, Good People: Being a Saiyan, she has a natural unlimited potential for battle and power. Along with the added layer of being able to turn into a vicious giant ape. Yet, she’s kind and mellow.
She’s Got Legs: Muscular and flexible.
Nice Girl: In spite of being a full blooded Saiyan of the PTO age, she’s kind hearted and easy going. Kallion, in general, has a difficult time hurting people unless pushed. Granted, she can be surprisingly short tempered.
The Apprentice: To Chronoa, as well as Bardock, and eventually Shallot.
Archenemy: Considers hers to be Towa, Frieza, and Suuja.
Badass Adorable: 5ft of Saiyan rage.
Bare Your Midriff: Typically in her casual attire.
Berserk Button: Good hearted as she may be, Kallion is still a short tempered Saiyan. What gets her is usually picking at her insecurities, insulting Chronoa or Trunks, making even the slightest threat toward her children, or dragging innocent people into conflicts.
Big Eater: Saiyan!
Blood Knight: Again, Saiyan!
Came Back Strong: As with every Saiyan, coming back from the brink of death brings with it a hefty power-up known as a zenkai boost.
11th-Hour Ranger: Her job as an elite time patroller.
Glass Cannon
Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Being all of 5ft, she’s this standing next to most of the men she knows. Special mention goes to Arugla, Taeta, Scaro, Giblet, Bardock, Trunks…
Lightning Bruiser: Speed is her greatest advantage due to her size.
Platonic Life-Partners: With Arugla, Taeta, Scaro, and debatably Trunks.
UST: With Trunks. There’s an obvious attraction, and she trusts him more than anyone.
Slap Slap Kiss: However, her and Giblet….
Opposites Attract: Her and Giblet again.
Slasher Smile: Often right before a fight.
Tranquil Fury: The first time she went Super Saiyan.
Token Good Teammate: Didn’t end well…kind of.
Took a Level in Badass: Gained a significant amount of confidence during her time in Conton City.
Wild Child: From age 6 to 12, after being marooned on a swampy planet by her old crew. When it became obvious that no one else was left to come get her, she fended for herself.
Blue is Heroic: Blue eyes, blue clothing, blue armor…
Defends Against Their Own Kind: Technically, whenever she’s fighting against a rogue saiyan in history.
Determinator: Can get to wonderfully self destructive levels.
Pregnant Badass: Hell, she’s confused as to why she’s apparently supposed to stop fighting after finding out she’s pregnant with Keel.
Socially Awkward Hero: Spending your formative years as a feral child will do that to a girl.
Idiot Hero: Socially awkward, romantically oblivious, no sense of self preservation? Yeah.
Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: So, your crew abandons you to die. Then THEY end up dying, you live and get stronger, and end of recruited by an elite time force where you get to work with the greatest heroes in history. Thanks, old crew!
Recruited From The Gutter: Found as a wild 12 year old girl living on a backwater planet with little intelligent life besides herself.
Undying Loyalty/I Owe You My Life: To Chronoa, Trunks, and the Time Patrol. Kallion is incredibly grateful for the second chance they gave her.
Wacky Parent, Serious Child: The wacky parent to the much more serious minded Keel.
Because You Were Nice To Me: What sparks Giblet’s attraction to her, along with the fact that she was never afraid of him. This trope is also the initial reason for her crush on Trunks.
Villainous Crush: Again, Giblet.
First Kiss: Giblet again!
Friend to All Children: Even before having her own, she had a soft spot for children and got along with them well.
Child From the Future: Keel, her equivalent of the Toki Toki City/XV1 Hero. Not that she initially knows.
Back-To-Back Badass: With Arugla, Taeta, and Trunks typically.
Desperately Craves Affection: Downplayed, but still there.
The Power of Friendship: Comes with the territory
Remember That You Trust Me
All Of The Other Reindeer
Motor Mouth: Usually when she’s nervous or meeting someone new.
Lady of War: It’s in the blood, after all.
Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sanguine
Beware the Nice Ones
Like A Daughter To Me: Bardock refers to her like this almost word for word.
Freudian Trio: The Id
Innocent Fanservice Girl: Has no qualms with people seeing her naked, and doesn’t understand why others would be offended by her being nude in her own home or bathroom.
Attack! Attack! Attack!
Wide-Eyed Idealist: To a point.
Too Hungry To Be Polite
Stupid Good: Hooooooo boy.
The Pollyanna
Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: Due to growing up alone, her knowledge of sex and things related to it is slim to none. As a result, actually experiencing those feelings causes her to momentarily freeze and panic. She gets better.
Oblivious to Love: Related to the above. Romantic gestures tend to fly over her head unless it’s spelled out.
Insecure Love Interest: Which directly feeds into the above two examples.
Battle Aura: Yellow or purple.
Strong Family Resemblance: Her mother’s spitting image. In teen Keel’s timeline, she has a daughter of her own who looks just like her as well.
Stepford Smiler: Type 1: “The character seems to be happy, cheerful, is always smiling, and seems to live a perfect life - but inside they are melancholic, if not outright depressed.”
Sink-or-Swim Mentor: Bardock, who has no problem beating her into the dirt during their very first training session.
Verbal Tic: Has a habit of ending sentences with “yeah?” and “ya know?”, as well as starting with common sentence fillers like “well,” or “uh”. Ya know?
Obfuscating Stupidity: Kallion is a weird case. While she’s uneducated and misses innuendo, she can be very intuitive. There’s also her habit of dodging uncomfortable questions by acting like she doesn’t understand. To quote Mariko; “Sometimes I wonder if you play dumb, or…”
Did you think I can’t feel?: Rips into Giblet with this almost word for word after he still accuses her of using and manipulating him for the Time Patrol.
Dead Guy Junior: Not her, but her son is named for the only member of her crew who was kind to her– and died as a result.
Book Dumb: She is very much uneducated, due to her circumstances. Learning to read was never a priority until she was 12.
Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Android 22's blue, but the blue to Mariko's red.
(To be added on continually whenever I think of another or as I see fit! FOR FUN!)

The era has changed, so the ways of the past can no longer be applied to solve the same problem! That's the essence of Kyuranger episode 23. The 'Rivalry of the Reds'...
- LOL at that opening intro speech. Spada's blatantly saying that Tsurugi is "so arrogant"! So what's going on with our bossy 'Sleeping Beast'? He is hungry. But instead of stopping down for some chow down, he takes his 'team' (Chef and assistant? Duh!) to... a TV Station. Wait, HUH? Is this a company visit to... TV Asahi? Nope, he's taking over Jark Matter News, and broadcasts a news about his heroic triumphant over Don Armage in the past to the... whole universe. Yes, using his Phoenix Station as the satellite. CONVENIENT! - Lucky is still mulling over Tsurugi's words that they should stop fighting. Of course, the livefeed announcement about Don Armage's secret surprises everyone in the Orion. Fortunately, Balance and Champ have discovered Eris, so hopefully that means they can clarify Tsurugi's bold statement. As soon as they can get her to talk, that is. LOL. Worried that Tsurugi's action might endanger the crew at the TV Station, Commander Xiao immediately dispatches an away team to the Station. - Clearly, Tsurugi's action is pissing off many people. Including Don Armage himself! The Shogun immediately commands his Vice-Shoguns to eliminate him, and the long-necked Tecchu is the first to head out. But publicity-hunter Malistrate Mediatsuyo-Indaver steps in to steal his spotlight before hand, attacking Tsurugi's team, as well as putting the civillians in danger. Precisely like what Xiao has feared. Trivia: Tecchu might be the only one speaking for now, but these three can be considered as 'Special' antagonists. How so? They are voiced by former Sentai heroes! Tecchu is voiced by Hiroshi Tsuchida, a now-regular VA for the franchise who debuted as Saizou/ Ninja Blue in the 1994 "Ninja Sentai Kakuranger". The female one, Akyanba (direct katakana romanization for now, not Over-Time's version), is voiced by Arisa Komiya. Fans would easily recognize her as Youko Usami/ Yellow Buster in the 2012 "Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters". And last but not least, Kukuruga (also, direct katakana romanization) is voiced by Naoya Uchida, the most 'veteran' of the three. He was Tatsuya Midorikawa/ Denzi Green in the 1980 "Denshi Sentai Denziman". Now a prolific stage actor, with "Les Miserables" and "Sakura Taisen V" as some of his most memorable performances. "It's SHOWTIME!!!" XD... - Tecchu's arrival changes thing. The fact that a Vice-Shogun, a higher rank than Menaster is joining the battlefield, means Don Armage is getting serious. But instead of focusing on rescuing the civillians, Phoenix Soldier gets all riled up to fight him. He's hinting that he and Tecchu have a history. They have battled before! But oddly, the latter doesn't seem to have ANY recollections of that. First Don Armage, now Tecchu? What's really happening here. - Tsurugi's action is placing everyone in jeopardy, and Aquila Pink ends up getting injured for shielding a crew member. Obviously, Lucky can't accept his reckless behavior, putting innocent lives in danger. Yet the older Red insists that "You won't be able to save the universe without some sacrifice". OUCH! Basically, it's the 'trolley problem' of saving the greater number of lives. Intriguingly, Tsurugi then tells the story of his old allies, who once acted as 'shield' for him before. One ended up never able to fight again, and another died. Now I don't know about you, but I'm more than certain that one of these two people he's referring about, has since become the new face behind 'Don Armage'. It's almost always, those closest to the hero, right? - Avoiding confrontation (Lucky almost punches him), the gang decides to walk away and return to the Orion. Thankfully they arrive just in time. After going through a bit of... 'situation', Balance and Champ are finally able to convince Eris, and ask her to extract some information to the team. At the same time, Tsurugi opens up about what happened in his past to Raptor and Spada (Yes, Xiao DID send them to do this after all). And well... - Tsurugi is telling the truth. It is confirmed that after gaining immortality from the Phoenix Kyu Globe, he indeed united the universe. He then led 88 Warriors (from each Constellation system) aboard the Argo, to defeat Don Armage whose Jark Matter began disrupting the peace. A battle hard fought that took the lives of almost everyone, Tsurugi ended up sacrificing his immortality by turning it into power to kill Don Armage. Eris then added, that Sir Olion was a surviving member of Tsurugi's force. This is likely the information she wanted to share before, but then the team got distracted by Scorpio. Judging from the silhouette, I think Olion is the one standing on Phoenix Soldier's right. Can we assume that he's the one who could never fight again then? Hmmm... intriguing. Eris assumes that Olion realized Don Armage's revival, and thus entrusted the Carina Kyu Globe in her safekeeping. He was also the one who put the badly injured Tsurugi to cold sleep prior to that. NOTE: Over-Time is still using the romanization 'Sir Orion', but I've decided to use the name 'Sir Olion' anyway, even if to set him apart from the Rebellion's ship. - This is where things get a little... melancholic. Turns out, Tsurugi is telling the Kyurangers to stop fighting, so that they won't suffer the same fate to his 88 Warriors. That's why he wants to handle things on his own. In a way, Tsurugi's harsh attitude is basically meant to protect the Kyurangers! Hold on, is this some kind of... a lone survivor's syndrome then? Aaaawww. But Lucky has a different ideal. He says it out loud to Tsurugi, that the Kyurangers are fighting together, simply because neither one of them can do it alone. An acknowledgement to why all these time, the entire team is needed to take down one Menaster. One is stronger with friends, he means. The power of UNITY!!! Of course... he somehow missed the point that it's exactly what Tsurugi did before with the 88 Warriors. And that it... didn't work. But let's save that discussion for another time... - Interestingly, Lucky's point is then put into solid proof almost immediately. Metal Death Worm that Tecchu sends out, is defeated through a rough co-op of him and Phoenix Soldier. While the other Kyurangers take down Mediatsuyo-Indaver in a very impressive (and neatly choreographed) group effort. Even the giant battle, requires all mechas because a Consumarz is added into the fray. In the end, it's about teamwork all along! WITH Phoenix Soldier among them. LOL. - Just like Ryutei Kyuren-Oh with 3 members absent, this time we're not seeing a complete set of Kyurangers at the battlefield either. Balance and Champ are still in Planet Keel, and Stinger stays behind on the Orion. So Ryutei-Oh heads out with Ophiucus as Scorpius replacement, while Kyuren-Oh with Aquila as Taurus' substitue. And speaking of Aquilla, the long awaited has come. The pink Voyager detaches as arm, and forms... a WING! Giving Kyuren-Oh aerial ability to chase the flying Consumarz. This gimmick was possible from the start, but was never used in the show until now. NOTE: By the way, Ryutei-Oh's combination in this episode with its LightBlue-Purple-Gray color scheme, could be a strong nod to those Extra Heroes on "Kyoryuger". As for Gigant Phoenix... I got very excited about the "Thunderbirds" nod, and the BGM song last week (which is NOT used in this episode... bummer), that I forgot to point out something. Its design is very similar to the style of a Machine Robo Rescue. And if you're looking for a more global comparison, it looks a lot like Transformers, instead of a Super Sentai robo! - Post battle, the friction isn't getting a solution just yet. Tsurugi still goes on his separate way (along with Spada and Raptor, of course). The Rivalry of the Reds is pretty much ongoing, due to their different point of views. However, it seems Lucky begins to warm up to needing the Phoenix, while Tsurugi himself is slowly warming up to having other people around. In fact, the latter's having a sweet 'Legendary Curry' moment with his team! Knowing this, I doubt it'll take long for them to work out their differences...
Overall: Tsurugi's presence continued to disrupt the balance of the show! Not only he's bringing a heft of altered history to the fray, he's also attracting scarier and more powerful enemies. As the kids nowadays are saying, "Things just got REAL". Despite the occasional attempts at humor, this episode felt tense and serious in general. The friction between Tsurugi and the Kyuranger felt loud and clear. But that's exactly why I think it's a great episode! As I've always said, conflict makes people grow, and in this case, it helped the Kyurangers to realize that they are nothing without each other. Next week: Rumble of the Reds. The 12 Stars are alligned... PS: A new trailer for the Summer Movie is shown after the episode. The opening sequence has already included scenes from it too. Not a surprise, because the movie is set to premiere this weekend, on August 5th, 2017. I think this movie looks fun and epic, so if you happen to be in Japan, don't miss it out, okay!
Episode 23 Score: 8,2 out of 10

Ermanda’s Inner Sanctum: Scorpion 3.16 “Keep It in Check, Mate”
Happy Valentine’s Day guys! This episode was hilarious on one end and bittersweet on another! It was amazing and deeply moving! I am still thinking about everything and all I can say right now is poor Happy! I promise to provide some of the laughs we got from Walter and Sly in this post and not make this review totally angsty. But to begin, here’s a song that encapsulates my feelings over the angst in this episode…
River of Tears by Alessia Cara
Ralph & The IQ Crew
Ralph has a dilemma. Two girls have asked him to the school dance, but he doesn’t know which girl to take because he doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. Who is this kid?! Ralphie-boy is growing up before our very eyes! Instead of going to Paige for advice, he consults with the boy geniuses, aka. IQ Crew. Love the moniker! Of course, they give him analytical advice which doesn’t seem to hit the emotional markers. When Paige walks to her desk and hears the end of their conversation, she wants to know what’s going on with Ralph. The boys try to uphold a bro code, but that doesn’t bode well as Paige manages to get Sly to spill the beans. I just knew that would happen! 😂😂😂 Paige is saddened by the fact that Ralph doesn’t come to her. Toby explains that he was seeking the advice of people who think like him. But she was still salty about it and got her words handed right back in response! 😂
In the end, the IQ Crew rallies again to push Ralph to show his mother how much he appreciates her wisdom and help. This turns into Ralph asking his mother to teach him how to dance to prepare. And Paige is extremely excited that her son finally comes to her for a matter of the heart! I am so here for emotionally-stunted geniuses giving love advice to a genius! It is a really cute moment! And who else was giddy over Ralph and his reasoning behind the tie colors?! This kid is too stinkin’ cute! Can we get a moment where Ralph shows off his new moves?!
I like that the writers focused more on a family love story in this episode with the adults and a sweet, innocent one with Ralph. In the series’ last Valentine’s day episode, it centered more around Ralph and one classroom crush. But this time, the girls ask him! Everybody loves Ralph! 💜💜💜
Walter & Sly: Egomaniac Central
The amount of comedy that spews from their competitiveness and bickering this entire episode can not be described in many words. It is all too hilarious!!! I have to use gifs and song references!
Sly and Walter engage in robotic arm wrestling…
Sly’s mechanical breakdown leads to this…
After the case debriefing, we learn more about Walt and Sly’s chess tourney from 5 years ago.
Walter and Sly prepare for the wild card under Cabe’s orders.
Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better) sung by Ethel Merman & Howard Keel (from the musical Annie Get Your Gun)
Anyone else see a link to a previous episode in the song selection?! 😉
The chess tournament montage…
Eye of the Tiger by Survivor 😂😂😂
Walter and Sly’s game argument shifts to taunting and a battle of the egos. Walter sneezes on the chess pieces as he did 5 years ago!
Oops!…I Did It Again by Britney Spears
SON OF A BUTCHER! 😂😂😂😂
Sly wins the game and unleashes his “Chess Vulture” victory dance!
But Sly’s antics cause Walter and him to get disqualified! 😳😱😱😱
They fail in their original plan to extract Natalya because their egos got too big. 👀
Thankfully, they administer another plan to get Walter back into the tournament and communicate the coded message to Natalya! She is saved!
I just can’t stop laughing at these two! They are friends and brothers (by marriage/law) and they certainly act like it! 😂😂😂 Good stuff!
Toby’s Gambling Saga
Even though this has been present from the beginning of the season, the writers are making it very clear that Toby is not gambling and is serious about refraining in activities that would trigger the impulse. He is not taking his promise to Happy lightly. This definitely points more to the possibility that the dean of the “University of Bruno” will be making an appearance to collect and places Toby in a precarious position that could parallel with Happy the desire to protect others from individual decisions. I will expand more on this later. Let’s get to the really juicy stuff!
Father of the Bride
I am still emotional about Patrick’s situation. I should have anticipated strong feels since the first scene is set on the garage rooftop where epic emotional moments go down! While it totally sucks that Patrick is gone as quickly as he comes, every moment he has each season with Happy is emotionally impactful.
Side note: I say, “see you [Patrick] next year” when the next cool Happy/Quintis thing happens,” since Scorpion likes its parallels. Anyways… 😉
In 1.12 Dominoes, Happy cried and embraced Patrick when he revealed that he knew who she was while she was working with him. (This is one of my all-time favorite Scorpion scenes.) Episode 2.13 White Out was happier because they reminisced over Grace, Happy’s mother, and Patrick gave Happy some encouraging advice that helped bring Quintis back to life. Now here we are in season 3 with another dilemma that brings out strong visceral responses from Happy the entire episode. Reminder: this is one of our robots amongst the geniuses. 😉
Natalya: [Chess] was a good place to hide until I learned that when it comes to people you love sometimes there’s no refuge. Sometimes there’s just pain.
This phrase possesses so much meaning for Happy Quinn. Happy is on edge this entire time just thinking about an escape plan for her father. She’s trying so hard to make sure her father stays in her life this time. In retrospect, her idea is terrible because it doesn’t account for the emotional ramifications of distance and a sudden life change with unresolved legal problems. If Patrick follows Happy’s plan, he would have to live his life always looking over his shoulder. He wouldn’t have the freedom to be in her life as he is right now. This would also impact his role as father-in-law to Toby and future Quintis children. So once again, Patrick makes a really tough decision that separates him from his daughter for the greater good. I wish he said something to her before he decided to follow Cabe’s plan for him, but it makes sense why he did not. It is the same reason why Cabe doesn’t stop Happy from trying to save her father. Patrick sees that she would do anything to ensure his freedom, so he saves her from making a very costly mistake. I only hope that Happy can learn to be okay with her father’s perspective and choice in this situation. Nicole (aka. @webuiltthepyramids) addresses some of the same points in this post.
ALL DIS TEW MUCH!!! 😭😭😭😭😭
At the end of the episode, Cabe is distraught that he couldn’t avoid the inevitable given all of his inside contacts. But Toby reminds him of his uncanny role to the entire team, not just Happy. He is and will always be Papa Cabe, the man who has had their backs since the day he was assigned to their detail even when real parents failed. He’s family! On that account, Happy’s growing relationship with Cabe and his involvement in Patrick’s situation is the writers way of setting Cabe to fill the role of father of the bride and walk Happy down the aisle.
On another note, Cabe’s deal for Patrick is two years jail time after testimony. Does anyone else find the time stamp peculiar outside the parameters of this offer? Of course, a lot of you think that this reference signals a 2-year delay in the Quintis wedding to accommodate Patrick’s release. While this is a possibility given how Happy breaks down, several statements in the episode convince me otherwise, like Toby saying, “Happy’s gonna get through this pain if we help her.” Therefore, I find the time stamp intriguing for a different reason because you know I can’t deny a parallel. Let me explain. When Toby discovered that Happy was married to Walter, Walter revealed that he and Happy had to remain legally married on paper for two more years in order to receive his citizenship. If they stuck with their original plan, did not push for an expedited review of Walter’s citizenship application, and Quintis still got engaged between that time and now, then the two-year sentence would not have been a major hindrance to the Quintis wedding because her father would likely be released in time to give her away. Now Walter was set on the original fraudulent marriage plan until Toby confronted him about the gravity of the wait and how it negatively affected him and Happy after the pregnancy announcement. This pushed Walter to ask Cabe to petition for an expedited review, which was a major risk given the extra scrutiny. Fortunately, everything worked in their favor in a realistic manner. As I look at this episode, I sense that we will see a similar scenario where Happy gets something good in the end and it happens when she least expects it. If the writers can set up parallels like this with other relationships (both platonic and romantic) in season 3, then I think this outcome is highly probable. I also anticipate major cyclone feels as we get closer to the main event(s). Hence, this time stamp is an interesting and clever writing choice.
Patrick & Toby Parallels: Plot Foreshadowing w/Happy
This is an expansion from the “Toby’s Gambling Saga” section. One of my first character analyses in this fandom on Tumblr was the similarities between Toby and Patrick in relation to Happy. It was released at the top of the S2 hiatus, so one part is off as it relates to Happy and Patrick. This is a Scorpion parallel that excites me because it’s psychologically juicy. Happy’s choice in a mate is almost Freudian-like: a fulfillment of a subconscious childhood desire. Yet, I did not anticipate that Patrick would be back to inadvertently help Happy by breaking her. You can read it HERE. Maybe I should revive the hashtag in that post! Lol!
As I mentioned earlier and in previous reviews, the small quips about Toby’s gambling tendencies and other similar gambling references suggest that we will learn more about Toby’s issues as the Quintis wedding approaches. Patrick’s choices in his alcoholism days have come back to haunt him. The fallout negatively impacts Happy and him. A similar thing can be said for Toby. It is likely that these hints tell us that something from Toby’s gambling past will resurface and negatively impact Happy and him. It’s only a matter of time. However, the redeeming factor in all of this is how S3 Happy will handle this. Let’s review her behavior trend!
S1 Happy carries a lot of animosity towards her father because he gave her up for adoption when she was 2 years old. She eventually reaches out to him without revealing her identity. S1 Happy is afraid to date Toby because she doesn’t want to destroy her friendship; says she needs time. Toby’s confidence and persistence pays off when Happy finally agrees to a date. When he’s absent by accident, Happy is not forgiving and squashes any hopes at a romance between them.
S2 Happy keeps Toby at arms length even though she secretly engages in an OOC activity to fill a void in her life that Toby once did. Toby gets advice from Patrick on how to possibly get her to come back to him. Happy says yes to Toby again, first with help from Sly and a final push from Patrick. Happy gives Toby an ultimatum about his gambling tendencies: he must choose her and their relationship or gambling.
This season Happy has been more open and vulnerable than we have ever seen. Shan (aka. @scribeshan) reminds me in conversation that she never blames Patrick or his past for this predicament. She directs all of the blame for this fallout at Cabe who is trying to help find the best way to minimize the collateral damage. This is extremely important (and quite moving tbh) for three reasons. One, it fits perfectly into the father-daughter dynamic between Happy and Cabe. Shows how easy it is to blame the ones giving you hard truth for your pain and the fallout of any actions taken from that dark place. Two, it depicts Happy’s choice to use emotion to guide logic, whether she is aware of this or not. Three, her behavior in this episode suggests that she may not blame Toby if his past comes back to haunt him and will mobilize her efforts to help him. I can’t say that S1 or S2 Happy would be so forgiving. It’s a really promising prospect!
THESE LINKS GIVE ME LIFE!!!
Drabbles…
Hello rooftop scene featuring Happy and her two dads! And boy, did it deliver on the emotional impact! Welcome back, Patrick!
Wardrobe recycle! Happy is wearing the same jacket from 3.08 Sly and the Family Stone. This jacket is soft which is interesting considering that Toby called her a softie in 3.08 and in this episode we see her invest her heart into her efforts to save Patrick. #symbolism 😉
Mom problems: Paige is feeling all kinds of salty about Ralph not coming to her about girl problems (matters of the heart). Kinda funny considering her heart thingo… 😱 Huh, wha… what I say?! 😜
Agent Markman: We owe it to Natalya to keep her safe. We have to get our code word, “green beans.” Sly: Code words… green beans is two words. 😂😂😂😂😂
Toby: That is not a coat hook. That is a coat “rook.” Me: Scorpion coming again with these rare feats of superhuman strength (well for these geniuses) that has me questioning when they were acquired. Lol! Regardless, I am not sure I would want to piss off Sly because it looks like he can be ruthless when cheated in an adorable, competitive way! 😂😂😂😂😂
Walter: One, I do not have the ability to aim my mucus. Two, you could have just cleaned it off. S: Not without touching it! 😂😂😂😂😂
The team lands in Sardovia. Toby calls to check on his lady love because he picked up on markers of concern from Cabe. I am so glad we get to see this again from Quintis! 😍😍😍😍
Toby calls Happy his lovebug! 😍😍😍 I thought of the same song as well, Caroline (aka. @scorpion-life)! Here you go guys… Lovebug by The Jonas Brothers
Happy working to reduce her father’s stay in county lockup has me all up in my feelings! And the convo between Cabe and her about her plans gives me all the concerned, caring father and genius, rebellious daughter feels. When Cabe says to Happy, “you’re supposed to be brilliant; act like it,” I was like, “girl, you better listen to your surrogate daddy in order to help your bio daddy!” The writers are really cooking things up between these two and I love it! 💜😭💜😭💜😭💜😭
Guys! It’s Paul K. Daniel, Elyes’ body double, with a premiere role! He did great! So funny! 😂😂😂
S: (inserts mouth guard) I must break you! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
S: We just checkmated ourselves. Me: No kidding dummies! 👀 😂😂😂😂
T: (jump starts vehicle) Look what I learned from my main squeeze! Me: 😍😍😍 *swoons forever*
When Patrick gets arrested… make it stop 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 Happy: You need to walk me down the aisle. Me: WHY WHY WHY!!! Why is this happening to the most redeemable parent of the cyclone?!! Happy just wants her daddy to be a part of the happy days in her life! This sucks balls man! Excuse me while I go cry a puddle of tears and agonize over the foreshadowing of this moment and celebrate Jadyn’s acting…
With Patrick gone, this means that Happy controls the garage and tow truck. I wonder if she’ll use this to her advantage in the future - as another place to store car parts and other mechanical items or a secluded place away from the work garage to work on something special.
Walter stopping Ralph to tell him, “good boy,” gives me all the feels!
