so, taehyung seems quite open to dating whoever he finds interesting, as long as he feels like their minds align. the ace is more of a seed that hasn't blossomed into anything substantial yet though, so while i do believe he'd be ready for the idea of it; there could be difficulties in it developing further. i see him more ready for a fling and casual dating, rather than a committed and devoted relationship. i can't shake off the feeling that for the longterm, he'd want someone who's a better match for him in terms of their financial means, their status, etc. i can see him still prefering to date a person who's somehow involved in the industry as well.

so in true yoongi fashion, he gave me the “whatever” feeling. like, he doesn't really care if it's a regular person he met at the café shop or not, he will vibe with whoever he vibes with. however! the reversed fool is telling me a clear “i'm not ready to take any risks though” he's very intuitive and good at figuring people out. so, he won't jump into any connection carelessly, and absolutely won't entertain a relationship where he feels like he's the one pouring into the cup more than they are. he needs to feel like it's a balanced union, where they're both on the same page. so it's like, if he feels like the person is only there to get him to.. idk, constantly buy them stuff, pull the good out of dating a bangtan member; best believe, yoongi will be out the door right away.

hm, i don't see hobi being fully against it. he usually doesn't discriminate or judge people based on superficial matters at first, and wouldn't necessarily let it stand in the way of love. however.. he does seem to have high standards, which i don't see everyone being capable of reaching. it's like, he gives in at first, but might quickly realize it doesn't work as well as he had thought. one thing that keeps coming through, is how he believes that in a relationship, the scale should be balanced. i can sense this being quite pronounced in a financial manner; i've seen this come through a few times now, where the members can at times, prefer dating someone who's in possession of their own financial means as well, since that'd rule out the possibility of them being taken advantage of financially. i also see him wanting his lovers to respect his need for autonomy when it comes to his career. he might feel like a person in a similar position would be more understanding and tolerant concerning his lifestyle.

i believe namjoon would take a long time to warm up to the person. like you'd have to earn one hundred percent and every single ounce of his trust, in order for him to feel like he can be with you in such an intimate way. i don't see him completely closed off from the idea, but he'd test the waters for a good while. like getting to know you and studying you thoroughly, to make sure he can figure out your motives before giving in. this man is smart. like if you come to him with any ulterior motives, best believe he'll see right through you. you can't trick him. i feel like him and yoongi are the most “no bs” members, that you just can not fool. i also believe he puts a lot of importance into intelligence and education when it comes his partners. so, usually seokjin is more openminded. i don't see him directly rejecting the idea in the past. but, i keep getting the queen of swords for him.. he might've gone through some negative experiences, which have resulted in him being extra careful about letting people in. he reads as very guarded and cautious when it comes to who he allows into his private life. telling you all, these men have a lot! of people who just wanna be with them for greedy and selfish purposes. it's genuinely difficult to be sure that the person is with you, for you only, rather than what you could do for them. they literally see bangtan as opportunities, and ways to climb up the latter, gather attention, get money, etc. so i truly don't see seokjin being very open to the idea. he'd be closed off, i see him being mistrustful about everything.. like “why do you wanna know this, why do you wanna know that?”

jin is immensely protective of his autonomy, and his career. he seems quite adamant in making sure people respect which lines they can and can't cross, and firmly separates his professional and personal life.

i got the king of cups reversed, which in a traditional sense would mean “no”. however, it's also giving.. if i'm not emotionally invested: no. if i am emotionally invested: yes.

though again.. i truly don't see him letting it get to that state in the first place; just rarely. i'd be genuinely surprised to hear him having had several committed and serious relationships that involved heavy feelings.

the card is also telling me about jimin's imbalance in emotions, and how he can have issues and insecurities about leaning into that side of himself more. it's almost like, he's lying to himself and deluding himself that he doesn't get jealous. although deep down he does. it's like, his heart and emotions win over his head and logic in that moment of jealousy, which can be something he doesn't enjoy.

i don't think he likes himself in an emotionally ridden state.. at all. he almost seems scared of it, because it can get quite dark, confusing and overwhelming for him. lol cute, the king of wands flew out immediately, so; yes. he seems quite confident in his ability to raise pets, especially dogs. it seems like he truly enjoys taking care of them, and holding the responsibility over them. it's very much giving a proud kangaji appa.

jk also seems to like the thought of putting their teamwork to the test; seeing how successful they could be at sharing the workload, and compromising together. almost like a test to see how well they would cooperate together as parents.

This is an S-tier idea and, if you'll believe me, I have been toying with an idea very similar.

Darling!Daughter, I imagine, would be a surprise baby between Asteria and Jamie, born once again out of love but unintentionally created. Asteria is ecstatic to be pregnant with another precious child, another being born of the love shared between her and Jamie. Jamie is also happy, but in that cautious way we all know he is. He has made peace with his life, and even the way her parents are, he knows his daughter is a good girl. He fears terribly for her maturity, but for now she is small, sweet, and cute. Perhaps this new child, probably another treasured daughter, will be able to live more freely without the responsibilities young Atalanta has.

Atalanta, already aged 6, would be shocked and horrified to hear of a "new baby". Even at this tender age, she knows the reason she was created and what she is expected to do once she becomes an adult. This... new one is unexpected, a new variable introduced into the household. She might even think of it as a threat to her position as heir and daughter. Atalanta, needless to say, does not like any of this and treats even the mention of the pregnancy with derision.

At least, until the baby is born.

Of course it's another girl. She comes out just as lovely as her sister, but looking more like her father. She has Jamie's complexion, his thick dark brown curls, but the deep blue eyes of her mother. The moment she is born, her parents fell in love with her in much the same way they fell in love with Atalanta. Atalanta, on the other hand, refused to even see her new baby sister for as long as she could, but once their eyes met... all that thinly-veiled dislike was gone.

Darling!Daughter grew up even more cherished than Atalanta if that is even possible. Emotionally intelligent, straightforward, music lover, and patient Hyunjin would definitely want someone who is emotionally intelligent and competent but isn't overly emotional, again circling back to his attraction to those on the calmer side. He would want someone who's very straightforward in all manners, including emotions, and who wouldn't overwhelm him and can genuinely relax around. But he'd also want someone who can give him space when he needs it and is fine with that. Also, Hyunjin may or may not cheat. He's very loyal, that's for certain, but that's when he's committed and in love. He loves a lot, and he loves fiercely, but who's to say the love is truly there? I feel like if someone doesn't meet the standards he set in his mind, or his idea of perfection, or he just grows tired of them, he'll find those things in someone else's arms. Not because he's inherently a cheater, but all his non-committal, wishy-washy placements when mixed with his Aries Mars, and his tendency to lie to spare feelings, would drive him to cheat on his partner if he falls out of love in any way instead of breaking up, because he wouldn't want to hurt them. However, once he finds the one, I think he will have absolute loyalty. The only issue is...Finding that one. In conclusion...He needs someone who can put up with all that. And meet all those impossible standards.

Grinning wryly, her adoring fingers surfed throughout his pitch black hair. “I’m sure, Percy.”

“Think about it for a second, though.” Sitting still, he leered upwards. There was ample fondness in his eyes, as well as a certain mischievous glimmer. “Close your eyes, come on. I’ll help you picture it.”

“Percy, we really can’t go—”

“Humor me.”

She stared down at him with great skepticism—but not for long; as always, those smirking lips betrayed her façade of maturity. Even at their most puerile, Annabeth could rarely resist his pointless games. He preferred the blame on a slight suspicion that she might have a thing for him. Maybe just a little bit.

This romance had endured almost ten years so far, and he was more certain of their everlasting love than he was certain of anything else in this life; however, something he had come to understand over the years (and especially in these dreary graduate days), was that a calm, stable love life had to be fueled like an engine, nourished like the body, and tended to like a garden. It was different from the fiery love of their tumultuous youth, who was its own distinct and tireless beast—a beast with fangs and bleeding claws that slashed through villains seeking its destruction. It had been violent by force; summer after summer and year after year, there had always been something standing in the way of their peaceful romance: the gods, the monsters, the prophecies, and all else, as if the universe couldn’t stand to see himself and Annabeth together.

Percy brewed her morning coffee in the exact way that she liked, or he washed her favorite thermos without being asked. She helped him with school when all sense was dethroned by ADHD, she kissed him in the morning before dashing off to work. He always touched her like something sacred. She made him feel so needed and important. If “forever” could only be like this, forever, then he was all the more eager to be her husband for the rest of his days.

Jake Sim's Perspective Reading

On to the next person for this reading series. I will say his energy is not as easy to break through as Heeseung, as for Heeseung I got messages rather quickly, but for him, there is a harder layer to get through here. Now, I don't only channel through cards, but I also can get messages, during this whole process. I also meditate on the energy to see if anything comes through as well.

Now, for these readings I do like to think of a main theme song, like I did for Heeseung. Although, he quickly gave me one. I had to dig to find one for Jake. the song that popped up was Hold My Heart by Sara Bareillas, with the lyrics, "I'm crying, is anybody listening, does anyone know how to hold my heart." This could indicate he wasn't emotionally nurtured growing up, yup going there, or he doesn't feel anyone understands his hurt or pain. So, we'll see if this has relevance throughout this reading. I also got the message hardened soul, which can indicate he is a hard shell to crack.

I am also seeing the Strength card in my mind when I think of him. Now the card I am thinking of is the card that popped up in that reading that showed a need to overpower women. What I am getting is there is some insecurity here that stems from not getting the support or validation from his Mom (all alleged, no facts) Going with what I am getting. I hate getting this feeling or going too personal, but it may be the only way to explain his side of things, so got to go there. Now his energy is pulling me to do the heavier decks first, unlike Heeseung, so we are going to start off strong, I guess.

So, I like to elaborate on the things I said about his Mom. I won’t say she was a bad Mom, but parents are human, and they may not always provide the emotional support and validation a child needs. This may be the case here, so this may be where his insecurity stems from. Which then gives him this need to want to overpower women. I do feel he isn’t aware of this or has addressed this as it can take a while to heal childhood wounds. I just felt the need to express this as this will help understand him a bit better and where he is coming from.

So, I am getting he tries to hide his true colors, maybe this has to do with his insecurities, but I am also getting this struggle to face himself. It is like he molds himself into something or tries to fit a mold. He cages himself in. His inability to face himself and show his true colors can lead him astray, or lead to disastrous results. It is like he falls for the trap each and every time, an endless cycle. Women can be tempting for him, maybe someone to conquer. Maybe they are a trigger for him, but how he is with women is a lesson he needs to learn. His relationships may trigger childhood wounds, as all romantic relationships will do, but for him it is a huge lesson for him. This is what he should work on healing, if not, his relationships will not end well for him and create despair for him. I am getting a lot of cards of showing a facade for him. There is a strong insecurity here, and that his need to show a better version of himself, even though he is flawed, seems to be very important to him. There could be some pent-up anger, or passive aggressiveness with him. I do see him being cool, calm, collected most of the time, but out of nowhere blow up and get very upset. Honestly, I do this too. It comes from lacking emotional maturity, calling myself out here too. I feel there could be anger he may have of someone, but may direct it at someone else, this could relate to romantic relationships. This could also be pent up frustrations from his childhood that he hasn't resolved.

I am not really sure he ever felt protected, and there is this need to protect his energy. I agree, his energy gives me way too much information, please work on protecting it! Although physically he can shield himself, energetically he is an open book. I am just getting there wasn't a gentle, loving protective figure in his life. There is a lot of stuck energy this boy has, and if energy is contained and gets stuck it could lead to illnesses, so he may want to work on clearing out this energy. I agree his energy is stuck, because every time I read for him, the same strong message pops up. There is a message for him to work on healing and integrate this into his life. I really wish I knew this boy in real life, so I could tell him all this. He really needs to heal his wounds, if not, he will have a battle with who he is and how he may treat relationships with women. Healing work/shadow work is very hard, but it needs to be done to become a better and happier person. I just keep seeing the card Fated to Suffer from my one deck in my head, he did get that card. This means that may be his fate if he doesn't heal. I would suggest for him to practice mediation, this may be helpful for him on his healing journey.

He utilizes his career as an idol to gain this validation he craves. He craves the attention. But for him to transcend and reach a higher level of awareness he should work on healing, yup lots of cards of healing here coming up for him. There is something about giving and receiving love in a healthy manner. To find value in his loving relationships, but also find value and love within himself. Not sure he has much love for himself either. He will need to release the skeletons he has, do some shadow work to remove the stagnant energy that keeps him in a loop. Okay, I will finish off with some Tarot cards, because it just seems there is repeated themes here. Which means this is important lesson for him to learn.

Jesus, they really want to stress the importance of his connections. He got all cups from this deck, so yeah, this shows he is a very sensitive and emotional persons and that connections he has will teach him a lot about himself. So, I am using a deck with keywords on the card, and for the 2 of cups he got, the keywords intimate connections and romantic connections stick out, this indicates relationships will be important to him on his life journey. I can see him being very heavily influenced by his emotions. So, I also got a card with Pisces energy, the words that stick out are, overly emotional, sensitive, romantic, moodiness and can't let go. These could be things he may need to address with how he goes about things. And last, he got the King of Cups, which is an emotionally stable card, which is great. Generally, he is pretty emotionally stable, caring, loving and compassionate. He can be very intuned with his emotions, but this energy can also create a barrier to their emotions, so it can be hard to get deeper with him. So, he might make it hard to penetrate through to deeper levels of him.

Okay, so I was drawn to another deck as well, now why they drew me to this?, because girl, he isn't seeing this, and this deck is for your own personal journey, but maybe they want you to know. So, once again, another card about validation is popping up, the card wants him to recognize that validation is within himself, not externally, so it is important to seek validation from within, his validation is enough. And once again, another card of him needing to release some things, be it negative and limited thoughts about himself, or self-criticism he may have. He should create an open space filled with love, abundance, positivity and opportunities. They also suggest him doing morning rituals or practices that help him tune in to himself *cough* mediation I am guessing. He should take space for himself first thing. He should not rush first thing or look online first thing in the morning. But focus more on what is going on with him and be still for a bit, before going about his day. I know that will probably be hard for him, but that is what I got.

Okay, this was long. This wasn't as heavy as I thought it would be, wasn't too bad. I am glad I did this, because I felt I humanized him a bit more here, because my readings of him put him in a negative light and that is not my intention, so hopefully this sheds light on him.

Based on this request:  I do have a story request for your the hobbit book. I was thinking of possibly the reader staying at Beorn’s and the grow to love each other overtime and they eventually admit it to each other.

Warnings: Mostly fluff, slight angst(?), first time writing Beorn. Reader is described as being shorter than Beorn. Beorn is theorized to be anywhere from 7'3"(220.98cm) to 12'(365.76cm) tall.

Pairings: Beorn x reader

When you had first accidentally stumbled upon the house in the woods, you thought you would die. After all, there was a giant, great bear right on your heels. You managed to find a small space to hide where the bear couldn't get you. A few hours later, after the bear had left and you calmed down, you were approached again by a very large man. While you were intimidated, he did not seem to want to hurt you. In fact, upon hearing your story, he offered you a place to stay.

       You grew to enjoy working alongside Beorn. You cooked together,  took care of the livestock and ponies together, and kept bees together. But your favorite thing to do with Beorn was work in his garden. For such a large being, Beorn was as gentle as could be with his garden. He talked to his plants, nurturing them the way a parent would a child. He taught you about the various things he grew and how to care for them. 

Time passed as you stayed with Beorn while you were trying to figure out where to go and what to do. Some days, you felt like a burden to the skin-changer. Still he never said anything like that to you nor did it seem that he was tiring of your company. You often caught him staring at you in what appeared to be deep contemplation. Like you were a riddle he couldn’t solve. One day, you would figure out exactly what Beorn was thinking.

Beorn had given you your own patch of land to grow flowers alongside his crops. You were tending to those flowers one morning when you felt Beorn’s eyes on you again. “Is something wrong?” you asked him, straightening up. He cleared his throat as if he were embarrassed to be caught staring. He paused for a moment, contemplating his words carefully. Given his usual brash nature, you were happy to wait for him to get his thoughts together.

“I have discovered something. Something unusual,” he replied after a bit. You cocked your head to the side as you gazed up at his face. “Oh?” He nodded and brought a hand up to his chin, the manacle on his wrist jingling slightly. “The thought of you…leaving. It does not please me. At all. I find myself getting rather angry at it. I had heard of feelings like this, but did not believe in them.” 

His confession threw you for what felt like hours. His intense gaze never left your face as he watched you take in what he’d said. “I…are you saying that you care for me?” You could have smacked yourself at how unsure you sounded. He nodded once but then his brows furrowed. “Perhaps care is not a strong enough word. I believe what I feel for you is deeper. Much deeper than simply caring.”

You felt your entire body heat up. Was he really saying what you thought he was? “Beorn? Are you telling me that you might love me?” He thought for a moment before confirming your words. “Yes. My love for you has grown, I believe, much like the blooms you have tended to. A tiny idea, a seed, of what life could be with you by my side for the rest of our days began this and now, like your flowers, I feel something blossoming and maturing in my heart that I have long thought was incapable of such things. And now I need to know if the same can be said of you. Do you-Could you…love me?

A smile crept its way to your lips before you could stop it. Beorn simply stared at you until you realized that you hadn’t answered him after nearly a minute. “Beorn, of course I could love you. It is possible that I already do and have been denying myself the joy of it, thinking you would eventually tire of me and I would have to leave.” You removed your gardening gloves and slowly reached over to take one of Beorn’s hands in yours.

“We could live a thousand ages and I would not tire of you,” he admitted slowly. You beamed up at him as tears of joy pricked at your eyes. Beorn smiled down at you but suddenly stiffened. Your brows furrowed as he straightened up and sniffed the air. “What is it?” you asked in confusion. 

“Orcs. Get inside, bar the door, and don’t come out until I return.” You knew better than to argue. Instead, you merely agreed and Beorn turned to leave. Before he got too far, you called out to him. He glanced back at you over his shoulder. “I love you,” you confessed. He smiled again. “And I you. Now go. I shall return.” You quickly ran inside, the door barely closed behind you when you heard the growling of a great bear. “Be safe,” you whispered. You had no idea that, very soon, a company of dwarves, a wizard, and hobbit would change your lives completely.

I notice how (most of) the fandom likes to pin Mirabel as motherly but...Camilo's right there. I can see him getting strict when he needs to be or blurts out the right advice at the right time...which literally shocks everyone when he does but still. In other words, he's the "mom/dad" friend that everybody needs at the right time.

Mirabel isn't the town babysitter; she has her own things going on. And I know she loves kids and all, but she strikes more as an older sister/ "aunt who gives you the candy you aren't supposed to have" kind of gal than a motherly type. Don't get me wrong, I honestly think she's good with advice too, but Camilo comes in a close second.

Yet, there's literally a tag on ao3 that's "Mirabel Madrigal acting as Antonio Madrigal's parental figure" that belongs to 94 fics. It's not a lot but still.

I'm okay with it being an au and all, have your fun, but Camilo takes care of kids on a regular basis. Shouldn't he be the one that's seen as parental?

It would be funny to see the slacker get fed up with someone's antics and start scolding like a parent would. I'm sure when it happens it makes the person do a double take because it's not something he does often. Rarely even.

So, when it does happen, it's shocking.

It would be nice to have Camilo be painted as someone who is emotionally mature. Maybe not to the extent of Mirabel, but like I said, he takes care of children. That has to make someone emotionally mature to some extent.

It would be nice to see Camilo not painted as a jerk for once. Sure, he's incredibly blunt but not a jerk! And yes, he's a teen boy, he's going to feel emotions like one, but we SAW him giving tea to his mom when she was freaking out.

Not jerk teenager would do that unless they were forced too. Camilo isn't forced, he wants his mama to be calm so SHE can feel a little better. We can see that by the way he's talking to her.

It would be hilarious to see Camilo using a chancla on someone (maybe a bully who's harassing Mirabel) and ending it with-

camilo definitely has a more nurturing side and we see it as early as the opening song! Whilst I wouldn’t go as far to say he acts like a parent he definitely knows how to discipline children and is just naturally good at dealing with them! I would love to see more content that talks about how caring camilo is (I am sick of the jerk camilo thing he’s not heartless guys!) I can definitely see him as more experienced with kids than mirabel as he’s the babysitter she’s more just the fun one who hangs around with them! it’s a very different dynamic as we don’t really see mirabel necessarily looking after kids only entertaining them! As for your point on camilo being emotionally mature I would have to agree! the mothers wouldn’t trust him with their kids if they thought he would be irresponsible! he definitely knows how to scold them even if it’s surprising when it happens! As for mirabel 100% agree! she definitely strikes me as someone the kids would view as the cool older best friend much more than a parental figure. They don’t want to make her mad because in their eyes she’s cool! she’s fun and entertaining and they don’t want to make her mad! it’s not the case of a parent where it’s they know they’ll get in trouble for it! that’s partly what inspired my camp counselor au lmao! the fact mirabel is so good with kids in a way she makes them feel validated she doesn’t reprimand them she is someone they view as a friend! The mirabel is antonios mother fic genre is one I completely avoid i love their relationship because she is so much more of an older sister figure to him! I would describe Mings personality as that of a caretaker, very kind and nurturing, he is always thinking of others to the point the only thoughts he spares himself are negative ones, he is also the most emotionally mature even if it doesn't seem like it, when it matters it is he who is always the bigger person.

This persists to how he is now but he definitely lost a lot of his optimism, he is more melancholic, more soft and slow. Less impulsive and always three steps ahead of everyone while sleeping with both eyes open as that once boundless trust is gone.

Ehm. I must say I could never find questions about fics and characterizations I wrote annoying 🥹🩷💞 Quite the contrary sweetie!

So, thoughts on how (yandere) König would be with kids, pregnant reader etc under the cut 🥰

How would Konig be with kids? With the way they go at it like animals, the reader is bound to get pregnant, right?👀

Ummmm yes, first of all I'm a horrible person for not writing my smut with sex ed purposes in mind. I usually skip the "Where's the condom"/"When's the last time you had an STD test?" convos unless they serve a narrative purpose. I have no excuse, I'm just lazy like that 🥲

So we have to start with the assumption that reader uses some type of contraception or then König has like an assortment of condoms in his pocket at all times. Kids would be a choice for them.

If and when they get a kid or two, König would be a hot & cold dad. He doesn't have a role model for good parenting (I suspect with the way I wrote him, his mother was abused in some form or another too and didn't/couldn't protect herself or her child from abuse). It makes König distant at times: confused and shut down one moment and extremely affectionate the next. The kids would have a high risk of forming an anxious and/or disorganized attachment style (very similar to Königs).

Would he be happy? What gender would he want? Would he spoil them?

I think kids would calm him down even more than the long-term relationship/eventual marriage. König isn't the most mature person, but he would "grow up" very soon after becoming a father. Kids would not offer a magical gateway out of his traumas and restlessness by any means, but he would surely find a measure of peace with them, forget his own demons for a moment while watching them grow. I believe he would leave the caring business for the reader (mainly because he isn't exactly a nurturer) but he would play with his kids a lot and spoil them with new toys and other material things.

König has no preference when it comes to gender, but he would have very little or no concept of gender as a spectrum: boys would simply be treated as boys and girls as girls. Which also means that girls get the princess treatment while boys are taught how to use weapons 🙄 Boys would also get to see the stern version of dad more often.

He would worry a lot about them getting bullied at school, especially boy/s (all in all he would project onto a boy sooo much). He would be worried every time they return from kindergarten and school and look for signs of trouble and distress. He would want to teach his boy/s to fight and very likely forces them to start boxing or wrestling at a very young age.

How would he treat the reader while pregnant? Would he want more? Do you think he could ever give up his job to spend more time with his family?

Once he gets over the abyss-like realization that he's going to be a dad, König would become the proudest, most excited and fussing partner there is. He would be the kind of man who forbids a pregnant woman from climbing too many steps – no matter what modern science and studies say about these things. He would follow most of the advice with a military-like orderliness and then suddenly brush some things off by claiming he knows what's best for his lady and the baby (e.g. too much physical activity is dangerous so reader must never exert herself).

He would prefer one, maybe two kids because more would cause him too much stress. He would escape the buzzing family life to work because home has become (funnily enough) "too chaotic". Then again if he had only one kid it would make him want to spend more time at home. He would spoil the shit out of an only child.

König loves his job and would never quit it but he would certainly accept, even ask for more and longer leaves to be with his family. He would also try and get reader to quit her job so she could be a stay at home mom while he provides for the family. 👀

One of the compliments I often get on my writing is just that — my writing. My word choices, my sentence structure, my imagery, my rhythm, my originality, etc. Now, I never thought I'd reach a point where I’d become that good at the craft itself, especially not in a language that's not even my native tongue. Partly because of imposter syndrome but also because I'm usually such a perfectionist that I never thought I’d dare to write something that doesn't strictly and stiltedly follow the rules.

Sentence fragments? Words used in unusual contexts? Odd or highly specific imagery? No can do!

Except, clearly, I can. I should, even.

And I want to share one of the monumental pieces of writing that made me realise that. And it’s not even a whole work. It's just one sentence, really:

"Han fattas mig."

Now, that probably looks a bit weird to those of you who don't understand Swedish, so let me explain.

That's a quote from the children's book Ronja the Robber's Daughter written by the famous Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. It was published back in 1981 and while I didn't actually read the book as a kid, I DID watch the Swedish live-action movie many times. But, even then, it took until my adult years to fully grasp the utter and heart-breaking brilliance of that quote.

For some context, the book/movie is about Ronja who, surprise surprise, is the young daughter of a robber chief. That quote is said by her father, Mattis, when one of the old robbers of their clan suddenly dies. Now, this old robber, Skalle-Per (uh... I guess the translation would be Bald Pete?), is clearly a father figure for Mattis. A wise old man who, while gloriously snarky, is also incredibly nurturing and emotionally mature. Which stands in stark contrast to Mattis who is the somewhat traditionally dominant, macho man. He HAS to be, on account of being the chief for a clan of rough and tough robbers. They, in many ways, complete each other, where Skalle-Per is kind, thoughtful, and sensible while Mattis is brash, violent, and impulsive.

Now, predictably, when Skalle-Per dies, Mattis throws a full-on tantrum. The kind that shows just how inexperienced he is with dealing with emotions without Skalle-Per to help him work through them. And, since the whole problem is that Skalle-Per is now dead? Mattis has absolutely no idea what to do.

He starts pacing back and forth, crying, flailing his arms, and yelling things like: "He's always been here! He's always existed, and now he doesn't!" And no amount of calming words from his wife soothes him and, eventually, he says that line:

"Han fattas mig."

And there is no direct translation I can give you that fully conveys the amount of raw, almost childlike, grief in that one sentence. This sentence was the one that made me realise that following the rules doesn't matter because, strictly speaking, this one doesn't. The words used are unusual to the point where they're even a little odd at first glance but, once you look deeper, also so incredibly impactful.

The rough translation would probably be "I miss him" but, as said, that doesn't convey the sheer desperation that those words do in Swedish. First of all, it throws the words around, completely changing the focus and weight of the sentence. "Han" is "he" and "mig" is "I." So saying "I miss him" reverses the order where the emphasis SHOULD be put on "him" but the main subject of the sentence now becomes "I" (i.e. less about the loss and more about how "I" am feeling). In “Han fattas mig” the “he” is the most important part.

Second, you have the word "fattas" which, yes, directly translated means "missing." But not the kind of missing that we Swedes normally use for grief. We have another word for that called "saknar." If you miss someone who has died, you'd say: "Jag saknar honom." Which is basically the same as the English “I miss him.” The word "fattas" is for a completely different context — a much more mundane one, with almost no emotional stakes. It's what we use when a piece is missing or something is lacking a required component. Kind of like you would say: "This stew is missing something" when it doesn't taste the way you want it to. But it can also mean "lost" as in "there's one puzzle piece missing."

So when Mattis says those words, he doesn't say "I miss him." He's saying: "He is a part of me and he is now missing," and "he is a part of me and I lost him," and "he is a part of me and now there is a hole where he used to be."

He is saying: "I will never be complete again."

Because "fattas" is also the word we use when something is missing and the thing won't be complete until you add it/return it/get it back. And, in this case, since the man in question is dead, you know Mattis will never get that chance. He will never be whole again. Which, sure, is a rather terrifying take on grief, but also not an untrue one. Grief will lessen over time, but the loss will still be there.

And this isn't me doing some sort of complex linguistic analysis — I don't have to. Because it's all there. It's so simple yet so effective. And yet, somehow, no one had really thought to use the word "fattas" to describe grief before. Because it's just a simple and mundane word we use for entirely different things, not big, painful emotions, right? Except Astrid Lindgren did. And while she no doubt did so to make it easier for children to grasp the concept — since most kids can relate to the feeling of losing something in the context of "fattas," which is much more direct and real than the elusive emotion of "saknar" — it also changes how an adult can view grief and loss.

Not even "I lost him" can fully encompass the absolute BRUTALITY of the grief found in the sentence "Han fattas mig."

And that is why I give fewer and fewer fucks about the rules. Now, obviously, I doubt I'll ever come up with something as brilliant as this sentence (it honestly rocks me to my core sometimes) BUT it's worth trying. It's worth being creative and experiment with the words you know and in what order you place them. Just maybe, you'll end up with something really cool. That's not to say you should ignore any and all rules, but it's okay to play around. It's okay to do the unexpected.

I think it's important to remember that. Writing is creative. We write to express things — to find ways to describe and explain complex emotions, grand adventures, and sweeping love stories. It connect us and gives us a way to share our experiences, thoughts, and feelings. And, sometimes, the set boundaries won't be enough. Sometimes, we might just need someone to look at how we describe grief and go: "I can make it simpler and, at the same time, so much more painful."

And it doesn't always have to be complex. It doesn't have to be difficult words and purple prose. Sometimes, all you need is three words so easy that a child can understand them and, somehow, you will describe a sense of loss so deep and so fundamental to that character that you KNOW that they will never be the same ever again.

So experiment. Be bold. And, above all else, have fun.

And, one final heart-wrenching fact to wrap this all up: The actor who played Skalle-Per — Allan Edwall — was in almost ALL of the movies/shows based on Astrid Lindgren's books. He played different roles, of course, but he was a staple — synonymous with her works. And, when the actor died back in 1997, Astrid Lindgren was asked how she was handling the loss and her reply was the same as Mattis’s:

"Han fattas mig."
