as much as im annoyed by the potential implications of the mhj/hybe drama i do feel like theres way too much speculation rn ... rlly doesn't sit so well with me that everyone is bashing on mhj alone (im not supporting her either though) and not bang sihyuk too. some hybe stans rlly js worship the guy and idk why . its not like he's innocent too. like those texts from him are so annoying too. abt if she's satisfied that nwjns is so popular and also abt trying to rival aespa / bp alone ...
hybe has sm power and r known for their mediaplay so i rlly do wish people would keep that in mind instead of doing their own speculation to bash on mhj . we don't know fs if she's the reason behind seunghan, youngseo, etc .... it seems so forced that everyone just collectively is making stuff up on their own theories and pissing on her. like im all for it when everything's done with but it's giving misogyny to me ughhh idk how to explain it eitherr without sounding like a mhj stan I PROMISE IM NOT TAKING HER SIDE T_T i just cant help but feel like poeple find it easier to hate and bash on women sometimes. even me scrolling x nowadays feels so annoying. literally feel so bad for illit and nwjns rn.
personally i was a teeny annoyed that illit had a similar image to nwjns w their nostalgia/coquettecore (also though just seems like cute/youthful concept is making a cb in general in kpop) but only because their songs on super real me were the exact type of songs i liked most from nwjns (super shy, hurt etc. the softer less peppy songs compared to hybe boy) so it bothered me that there was an implication that nwjns might be forced to distance itself to a more differing concept to keep some contrast btwn the two ... but ik that's not illit's fault at all (literally love the girls sm im a runext fan ^^) i feel like i can understand the upset that illit was getting a similar concept when every other grp before illit in hybe had more defined concepts seperating each other. but once again that's all hybe's doing ...... seeing the choreographers supporting mhj too makes it seem like not even the nwjns team or even all the staff were on board with the references in the choreo either...
anyways i do hope this controversy doesnt impede on either grps promos :( and i rlly hope everything gets sorted out... im srsly hoping this doesnt turn into a 5050 situtation again but with nwjns i was so upset when that happened . was curious on what your thoughts were or if u were keeping up with everything?
i feel like i've seen a good amount of people bashing them both but we could have different tls maybe !! but yeah i don't know why there's so many hybe stans 😭 it's been this way for a long time + armys idolizing bang pd back when bts was the only group under bighit. i feel like everyone needs to just accept that all these companies are trash and you can't be defending ceos
i do get what you mean because women are often criticized far more when those same things would be overlooked if a man did it,, however i don't think that's the case here 😭 because 1. she has an extensive history of s3xualizing minors back from when she was in sm and 2. it was revealed that she and bang pd bought out source music to debut a girl group so it's not that far-fetched to say that she could have sabotaged the trainees from source music, especially after she said that she didn't want to debut sakura because she was "too old." some of the other theories people are making definitely don't have much of a basis but i think most people also recognize that the main victims of all this are newjeans and illit + the other groups mhj dragged in with her. so yeah i wouldn't call it misogyny that people are going after min heejin, and honestly i'm even more surprised that people just forgot about how she sexualized shinee, red velvet, jisung, and newjeans and only started calling her out after this incident 😭 she's always had a LOT of defenders and personally i've never felt the need to defend billionaires :/ also mhj's a businesswoman who knows how to play the media herself. you can see it even in her press conferences; she's bringing up different groups to take attention off of herself and talking about her "relationship" with newjeans to garner sympathy from everyone
i think hybe definitely was shady for greenlighting illit's concept when it's clear there was inspiration from newjeans. i personally just assumed they discussed this with ador but i guess not?? so weird that they don't act like proper adults in that building. i'll also say that i don't think min heejin's concept for newjeans is original or considered "hers" but since most people associate that concept with newjeans, it's safe to say that illit's creative director probably got it from newjeans anyways. another thing about hybe tho is that i don't think they've been doing strong concepts for their groups. txt did have a strong one initially but bighit just stopped trying for them (probs bc their team got moved to source music 🥲) i think belift did a good job with keeping the vampire concept for enha consistent and i was initially scared that it would stop after hybe fully acquired cj enm, but i think they've recognized that enha just has too much connected to their vampire concept (their webtoon, storyline for their music videos) but enha's also been neglected by hybe a lot so screw them 🚶♂️
i hope this issue doesn't mess with comebacks either :/ it's like suspiciously right before newjeans' comeback, which throws me off because i feel like there's always some shit min heejin's pulling right before or during their comebacks (ex: inserting herself in the OMG music video at the very end) and it's so weird to me how she always talks about them as if she's the sixth member 😭

you should be hoping sm doesn't pull on DJJ the same crap they pulled on CBX instead of asking why a fan would want them to leave the company. LSM was literally a money launderer.... the good music will follow an idol no matter where they go if they are talented. so you shouldn't be worried if jaedo leaves sm. if you are a fan, you need to be by their side, not sm's. what if sm doesn't pay them too? if sm was scamming CBX out of their money you don't think they are doing to other artists? if i remember correctly LSM was hoarding all the wayv money for himself 😭
I'm not on SM's side, I don't work for them, and I'm not a company stan.
I'm also a freelancer, a person who prefers financial instability to working for a company and following someone else's rules. Never lasted more than a year in an institution.
You, fans who cry your faves need to leave their company this instant, are very naive and detached from reality. Many of you don't even yet pay taxes or feed a family.
Good music doesn't follow nice idols. If it was so, the talented yt singers and indie artists would have showered the world with bangers and got money from their talents. Instead of singing covers in local bars and their tiny yt channels. Somehow it is "factory produced" pop-stars and rappers instead who get famous.
There is no "dating app" for producers. You need to know people, have connections, or be the one everyone sends their demos to. It was hated by the fans Chris Lee who travelled around the globe and collected all those European and American producers. It is SM's money and reputation that makes aspiring Korean producers send them their tracks in hopes of being chosen.
There are very few songwriters among idols. Even fewer idols who can be a manager or a CEO. There are more than 3 hundred idol companies in Korea, and only 5 or 7 are really successful. Even Pledis with self-producing 17, an idol group second only to BTS in popularity, was bought by Hybe (i.e. they had to sell themselves otherwise they couldn't continue).
Look at Jessi. She is very talented, she is good at variety, she knows a lot of people in the industry, she writes her own songs, and she struggles non-stop. She was scummed by one of the people who she hired, an orginiser for her concerts in Europe.
Look at Kang Daniel. He was and stays one of the most popular idols in Korea, he is a phenomenon. He opened his own company, he works like a horse on tv programmes to promote himself. And even his album sales started to go down.
2019: 500,134 copies sold
2020: 603,961 copies sold
2021: 320,114 copies sold
2022: 404,261 copies sold
2023: 171,552 copies sold
Where is Chungha?
I'm not saying it is impossible to become famous on your own, or that staying with one's company is always the best choice. No. It's business. Both sides use each other. Being a part of a big company has its downsides. Being independant or a part of a small company also has its downsides. SM is not strong in acting area, so leaving it as an actor (D.O.) or musical actor (Kyuhyun) makes sense. When it comes to idol music though?
You mentioned CBX.
On June 3, Ten Asia announced that Baekhyun has established his own company called "I&B100" and founded it on June 23 of last year before the issue of renewal contracts with SM was raised. Baekhyun will continue to work "separately and together" with SM through his own label during the contract renewal period. On June 19, SM and the three members announced that both parties had resolved their differences over contract dispute and the members had decided to stay with the agency.
Why the talented and super famous Exo members "resolved" their differences instead of leaving the hateful company? Because they are not stupid. They fought for their rights and improved their terms, but they still need SM's resources, the money that participation in Exo will bring. Baek's company is a production company. He can safely run it, make trial tests, learn the craft. And only later, when everything is running smoothly, when he gained reputation and trust, he can go into real independant sailing.
OK. Doyoung or Jaehyun leaves SM today. Where will they go? JYP? YG? The most famous and successul current soloists are Taeyeon, Baekhyun, Taemin (SM/Kakao), IU (Kakao), BTS guys and PSY. PSY has his own company, but Jessi left him, Hyuna left him, his boy group released only one EP and dissapeared. He is a bad producer and CEO, apparently.
Open their own companies? Doyoung didn't even finish school. He wants to be a CEO one day and he will. However, right now he has neither the capital, neither the fame to pull it off. Everything he gained was through SM. It is not enough to find a good song. You need investors who will pay for your MVs, you need album distributors and streaming platforms, you need PR managers who will look for tv-appearence opportunities and BA deals. You need translators and editors for YT content. Will Doyoung find them all on the street? With tens of years of experience under their belt?
NCT got their own centre. The right way for Doyoung is not to leave SM, but seize this centre, get producing and creative control over it, get all the executives under his thumb.
Different idols suit different companies. Soyeon wouldn't be given the free reign over her group in SM. It's because Cube failed with CLC, they risked it and tried to trust her talent of a producer. G-Dragon wouldn't become G-Dragon in SM either. And 17 became self-producing because Pledis was postponing their debut, didn't have money. On the other hand, Taeyong wouldn't have become Taeyong outside of SM. If Soyeon is a dandelion capable of growing through concrete. He is a capricious rose in need of a glasshouse.
SM is a company built by its artists as much as by the staff behind the scene. The older idols walked for newer idols to run. Taemin had to fight for the right to have more influence on the production side of his albums. Key fought for his vision. Kai invested his own resources. Seulgi and Taeyong? Practically produced their first albums. Shinee, even 127 gave out snacks to their first fans to slowly build a fanbase. Riize sold their single 1mln+ and are on top of brandrep after half a year after the debut.
Compare Hansol and Sungchan. One left. One stayed. Where are they now?

I would love to hear your takes on how different groups/companies produce songs differently (or how they might be similar)!
there are definitely differences in terms of like what they mostly pay attention to in terms of the instruments used, vocal layering and arrangement and etc but i think in the end there are always gonna be similarities bc of how well... it's the kpop industry and companies will want to produce something that is trendy so i think in the end there's always a formula on how songs are made especially kpop songs i think there's a certain sound that kinda makes you go "oh this is kpop" and i am not talking about them singing in korean but rather the melodies that are used and etc but kpop as many people know it's not a genre of music in itself kpop is an industry bc, i am pretty sure this has been discussed and many people know, that there are many different genres in the kpop music like some groups do more edm, some do a more pop sound, some are more rnb or rock and etc i think you get where i am going with that!
(also side note i hate when i am looking for what the genre of a kpop song is and it simply says kpop and it's quite annoying) but anyways i think the differences start from there. but in terms of companies separately i have noticed a lot how songs from sm groups usually care a lot about vocal harmonies and there are many instances in songs where you can listen to harmonies in a song the example that comes to my mind is definitely exo's tempo bridge where that section is just harmonies and it's probably are very good harmony arrangement whoever came up with that deserves all the flowers and when people mention tempo i always think about that bridge it's very memorable!! also 127's superhuman intro is a good example too like the whole production of that song is still very insane to me! but in general i feel like sm tries very different types of music for their groups and they are not afraid to do so and i am pretty sure they work with a lot of producers internationally so that's why there's always something new they bring to the sound of a group and that's why most sm groups have something new and fresh every comeback but with that subtle sound the group is known for which is always very interesting to me as for jype... i think their songs for the groups in general are very performance driven if that makes sense like u can tell they were made to dance and perform in my opinion that's why there's just sections of songs where you have a part that spacious or with just the instrumental playing i am thinking about wannabe by itzy specifically but also likey by twice also has that type of instrumental built for a dance break and i think it's mostly bc their groups are groups that have a lot of focus on the performance aspect and end up making songs thinking of that specifically there's definitely nothing wrong with that honestly i think it's very interesting! not even sure if i want to talk about yge production bc... all i know of yge production is teddy and let me tell u.... he is genuinely needs to stop making the same sound or.... yge desperately needs to bring new people bc omg... i am not even gonna get into the whole bp think bc.... there's a lot but definitely it's sad how songs produced by their producers lack something interesting especially over the years they have been lacking something it's sad! idk much about treasures's and ikon's music but from what i know the members participate in their songs and honestly from what i heard from treasure's music... it's pretty good (going crazy soty) yeah but in general for the future they should start investing on getting new people to produce music for their groups bc atp the sound is becoming too similar and they need a new start! for hybe.... well this is complicated since hybe is a lot companies in one (😭) and there's not a way to really say what their production style is bc their individual companies have ways to do music differently even tho their producers appear in some of the groups music
#gonna continue this on the next rb bc....#there's a character limit HELP#but thank u so much for asking this in advance it really had me thinking#asks#anon

Weird question because I'm sure you don't talk about EXO much but I'm an EXO fan and have been since 2018. What's your opinion about the hate that SM gets from fans of SM groups? I know they're not a perfect company and they've made a loooooot of mistakes towards their artists some that proved tragic and also business wise but purely speaking as an EXO fan, I don't understand why SM gets constant hate from fans. Yeah they could treat certain EXO members better imo but that said, they've done nothing but give EXO the best writers, producers, choreographers they could ask for. Their discography is almost flawless as I'm sure you feel the same about SHINee and the members as soloists. I'm Baekhyun and Kai double biased and their albums are great. EXO subunit groups EXO-CBX and EXO-SC are also great. SM has also backed them with great teams. I know Lay didn't resign with SM but but he's also very successful in China and is CEO of his own company there so it makes sense he wouldn't resign with SM again. He did say his company was working on a deal with SM where they can work together and essentially still be part of EXO I take it so all of that said, do you as a SHINee fan see anything that I can't regarding SM mistreating them? I mean if it rains, SM is somehow at fault for some fans it seems. Do you think the hate is warranted or do you think this is the result of entitled overly dramatic instigating international fans?
Hello EXO Anon!
I think it's very fashionable to hate on SM for the smallest things. In all fandoms, I think there's quite a healthy number of "damn the man" stans who love to shit talk the powers that be. Because that's what SM, Hybe, YG etc are - they're "the man" who supposedly have all the power and call the shots, and when anything goes wrong it's their fault but when everything goes right, it's the artist who clawed their way to success, right?
As always, I'll be brutally honest in my reply. I think SM has done a fair (and I use that word carefully) job of learning from horrific mistakes and creating a talent agency that does look after its talent. It promotes from within, for example Changmin taking an director role and BoA working with younger talent to ensure their voices aren't drowned out by management. Is it a perfect place? Not by a long shot. Is your workplace perfect? Mine isn't even close LOL.
I can understand how a "hate SM" culture arose, however, given all the things that have happened. I'm not going to list them here because any quick google search will bring up a plethora. I judge SM in the present. I see senior artists getting great opportunities to take artistic direction in their work. I see younger artists working incredibly hard but again, getting opportunities to develop their craft with top talent. I do see inklings of changes with girls groups. GoT was perhaps misguided with the whole mean girl shtick but I don't think the tough attitude we see from Aespa, and the enriching meta world they're involved in, should be overlooked in a country where women have a lot less agency than their male counterparts.
And the other thing I see at SM is a lot of variety in the art they're putting out. When I watched NCT The Link, I was astounded by the solo performances. Each artist brought different vibes — they weren't all crazy kinksters like Johnny and Taeyong, but this more adult content was side by side with different music and performance styles.
And I agree that in terms of quality of music, such as EXO's discography, SHINee's, etc, the quality is astoundingly high. That's not to say there aren't duds or songs I don't vibe with, but there's a lot of well-crafted music with meaning and artistry behind it. I don't get the cookie-cutter feeling. Look at Red Velvet's MV for Feel My Rhythm and the countless art references in there. Maybe the sound of the song doesn't feel new for a girl group, but the content of the MV, even if perhaps flawed by trying to do too much, hit many different levels. It's not 14 year old girls singing about someone looking at their cookie. Yes, I'm going there.
SM shed the questionable pedo-oriented content and Hybe picked up where they left off. This is where a lot of the criticism comes in because Hybe is supposed to be a new, forward-thinking company that puts its artists first. SM hasn't debuted a minor since the producer Min Hee-jin, who is NewJeans' creative director, left.
On the balance of things, I think SM fans have a lot less to complain about and they lose sight of reality. I don't know if this happens in EXO-L spaces, but in Shawol spaces, there's a lot of victimization of the members. Since Key's last comeback, it's all been about how he had to claw his way forward with that comeback and then everyone just copied him, when in reality the retro-futurism concept, although uniquely and superbly executed, was hardly new when he used it, and SM repurposing their props/creative ideas is not exactly a crime. It's likely the same product designers etc working on the next project. What is remarkable is that Key did his own creative direction, in essence, and he was given the space to do that and has been given the space to do creative direction from at least 2015 when he started designing costumes. He's not a victim. He's a creative working in his industry and excelling in it. 💀
Re Lay not resigning and the company — there's basically laws in China that make it necessary for actors and talent to operate their own studio. The studio becomes a legal entity for them. And that entity can take responsibility for bad fan behaviors legally speaking. I'm no expert but I would imagine Lay leaving to create his studio would help him work safely in China given the legal landscape. As far as I understand, this has all come up after the YiZhan controversy that highlighted the negative behaviors of large fandoms, and the government wishes for actors or singers etc to be ultimately responsible for that behavior. This is my understanding but people are free to correct me if I've got it wrong.
