Check in on my (not very realistic) wish list for episode 139
1. Nobody dies in the potential battle against Lucien/the Somnovem? I will be fine with temporary unconciousness but please nobody actually dies? Will they even fight? What was going on with the cliffhanger? I have so many questions!
Hey nobody died! Nobody even went unconscious. Can't believe we have a part 2 to this epic boss fight. This showdown is awesome! At least we know what will happen next episode.
2. The group uses their new eye powers for something (group telepathy will be hilarious, especially accidental) or just in general goof off with their new eyes.

3. Beau or Caleb discover more new eye functions that we have not seen before (antimagic cone anyone? Does the eye location have any meaning? Lucien’s was also on the chest right?)

4. We get to see more of the party members’ new powers/abilities since they levelled up and got a long rest! Let’s gooo.
MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH thanks Cad. It's a new power we haven't seen before! Caleb knows gravity fissure now, apparently! Fjord and Veth also considered using new abilities before the break. Jester used contagion on Lucien! It was a nice try.
5. They get some sort of contact with/update from the material plane (i.e. their family, Yussa, or anybody else I guess just not Trent please), it’s been a while I wonder what’s going on over there. Has Jester’s parent trap succeeded fully yet? Has the assembly been investigated yet? Has Yussa figured out what the Nein did with his emergency exit gift? How are Yeza and Luc doing in the crime bar? Is the Dynasty looking into Essek? So many possibilities.

6. The M9 succeed in stopping the city from going to the material plane and find a way to potentially destroy it by the end of the episode.
It appears that them plane shifting the crest away actually does ensure that the city cannot return to the material plane, that's great news! Also, I assume destroying Lucien would be a good first step to destroying the city.
7. Beau and Yasha continue to fight like the power couple they are and to indulge in PDA in the flesh horror city (because why not). Bonus: we find out Yasha’s plans for Beau’s red cape/the cape is used by Beau in the episode.
The discussion between Beau, Yasha and Veth LMAO. Oh NO Yasha is fighting Beau again - that natural 1 though! The miss! Another natural 1! The power of love!!!! Yasha also used the battle cry to protect Beau!
8. Fjord and Jester continue to be domestic and supportive of each other in these trying times because they are great. Bonus: more Sprinkle/Artagan mentions or interactions.
Jester and Fjord starting strong with the dirty/natural 20's! Also "I'd rather you wear it" "Fjord, it's so expensive!" They are so cute. Ayy Sprinkle/Artagan both got fed the Heroes' Feast! The excitement over the ring finally working lol. "Imma cast it at 4th level" lol Jester really tried her best to remove his slow and it worked!
9. Obligatory wish for Essek’s fancy dunamancy or magical items (Bonus: STILL hoping to see more high-damage AOE offensive spells that Essek has never cast because of the party placement, dark star anybody?).
The trapped haste spell MmmMm. GRAVITY FISSURE YAY hot spell flavour is hot. THANK YOU for that dispel magic on Yasha Essek you are the best. Nice magic missile but he is out in the open oh nO he is charmed oh no is he going to dark star the party?? Wheww thank you Caleb for the dispel, at fifth level too! He was so going to dark star Lucien if Cad was not pulled.
10. Obligatory wish for Caleb’s polymorph spell on himself or a party member. Actually, let’s expand to any party member’s polymorph! Give me those sweet polymorph interactions.

11. The party tries to reach Lucien by mentioning Molly and Lucien actually having a physical reaction to their words.
Wow that was a physical reaction alright, definitely to Jester and Caleb's mention of Molly's name. Jester's song also had an effect. Everybody is trying yay! Well, it was worth a try. BEAU'S bonus action Gustuv talk made him lose a legendary action WOW. Fjord's, Caleb's attempt also succeeded. In round 2, Beau removed 1 legendary action, followed by Jester
12. Obligatory wish for Essek’s room in the tower (it will stay until it happens).

CAD what a good pep talk I love you. Path to the grave and also the reaction war caster blight, very nice.
14. I NEED MORE RP PLEASE like last week’s high intensity combat was fun but I miss one-on-one conversations give them to me thank you. Longer conversations are even better.

15. Everybody being super freaked out/creeped out by the terrible flesh city thanks to Matt’s wonderfully detailed and awesome descriptions.
The damaged state of the city, how it leans towards Lucien's cocoon thing and Lucien's transformation... OH NO the stalks not the tentacle stalks.
16.  At least one of the party members get mind-influenced/charmed by some effect during the combat (well at least Caleb’s got mind blank and Veth got intellect fortress, but I would be surprised if there was no mind shenanigans).
Well, I knew it would happen. Gaudius, the eye of longing/love that did not affect Beau DID charm Yasha with a failed wis save and Yasha attacked Beau, again. However thanks to Essek it didn't last long!
17. Somebody check in a bit on Essek’s mental state because he is clearly not entirely desensitized as seen from last episode. At least he got a full rest so physically he is fine (just squishy, like wizards are).
Hey Essek got to open up a little bit before their final fight, so that was great.
18. Caleb uses more fire or his customized spells or just any cool spells in general I guess because what’s sexier than wizards NOTHING I’m still hyped from last week.
Gravity fissure already?? Sweet max damage, despite the save! Caleb you can literally just copy any spell you see cast can't you, high int wizard I love you. Also the use of that potion and the scroll were pretty smart too.
19. We learn more about Lucien’s motives and what he is actually trying to do, or more about the Somnovem’s different? motives because I was very confused last episode. Lucien wants to “parent” the Somnovem by bombing them with 10 intuit charges, like okay are you sure you are not trying to kill them? Then again, if that doesn’t severely damage the Somnovem I don’t know what will.
Well we now know that Lucien has all the Somnovem power inside himself now and is still very much wanting to bring back the city - at least he can't right now because of the threshold crest they got rid of last session. This clarifies a lot. I guess the "parenting" was to weaken the Somnovem for him to absorb them all into himself?
20. Obligatory wish for everyone to remain relatively happy and alive by the end of the episode except Lucien, and the episode ends on a terrifying cliffhanger as always.
I mean, should have known that Lucien cannot be killed in 1 session. Otherwise though, what an episode! What a session! Absolutely amazing.
Bonus:
ESSEK IS MAKING A JOKE LMAO I can't with this man, he is also giving everybody spells/gifts, cute - I guess wizards all have the save love language.
CALEB IS ABOVE 100 HP thank you Jester for that 17 roll from Heroes' Feast! I knew you'd do it. The feast was so crucial in their combat too, what a queen. Caleb always be covering his friends in his anti-aberration cone, and burning Lucien's legendary reactions. Great moves.
Veth are you... horny for Lucien??? LMAO
OH NO Gaudius on Essek this is the alternative Essek bossfight timeline OH NO but at the same time YES the angst- oh nvm Caleb thanks lol.
Extra - combat notes for my record:
Saves minus # eyes
Elatis - Excitement, pulling the target 120 ft towards Lucien + eye.
Ira - Rage, fireball effect AOE damage.
Fastidan - Disgust (wilting dull green) necrotic damage
Luctus - Grief (Dex save), slow spell effect.
Timorei - fear effect, but negated by Heroes' feast immunity.

WHAT A FIGHT! I can't wait for part 2 and hopefully that's Lucien's final form. I did not think that the Molly influence will have such a profound effect, but I sure am glad it did! Everyone was so amazing in this combat, I love it all.

I address Hititor’s DM brain and ask: in the hypothetical event that Caleb *did* somehow end up last standing against Trent, would he in your opinion consider popping the glowstick on Allura’s staff? And if he did, do you think it’d be enough? I’m willing to bet loose change Trent isn’t a normal archmage stat block (see: Gelidon and her five billion HP) and I really want to know how Matt’d handle a PC and their nemesis getting nuked like that. Thoughts?
Okay it took me a solid 30 seconds to figure out what “hititor” was so I should probably put a name people can call me in my bio, huh (for those wondering I’ve usually gone by my first initial of M on the internet, so use that if you need to address me by a name. I’ll put it in the bio).
Anyway: to the first part, if he was truly last standing against Trent - like, everyone else dead or unconscious and unlikely to make it - I think he might, but if he had allies up I don’t know if he would. It’s a pretty extreme, and Caleb has slowly found a lot to live for as the scene with Luc showed this episode. Even when he brought up turning himself over to Trent it was because he knew he would probably not be killed, and it would buy the others time. (On the other hand he might if he wasn’t last standing on the grounds that Caduceus and Jester could bring him back if it got him). And his motivation has never really been revenge, although I think the line between “making it impossible to do what was done to me” and revenge can get blurry when it comes to like, what Caleb would probably like to do with Vergessen. Basically: I think it’s unlikely he would take that option unless it really was the only option with a chance of taking out Trent.
But anyway I’m more interested in what happens if he does.
For the sake of this argument we’re going to use a maximum-power staff (full up with 20 charges) and assume Trent is within 10 feet and is a L20 wizard.
In this scenario, Trent would take 160 damage (8 x 20). If his constitution score is maxed out and his health was a 6 on a d6 every time this wouldn’t be enough (220 HP total) but given he’s a jaundiced old guy if we go for a realistically built but robust wizard, with the default/average rounded up 4 HP/level and a con of +3, he would be at 80+60=140 which would knock him out at full health if he fails the dex save. Because I am assuming Trent has high charisma for all the lying, it’s unlikely both his con and dex are amazing. Either way, it’s quite literally a roll of the dice if it takes him or not, but assuming the rest of the Nein went down fighting and Trent doesn’t have tons of healing potions on him I think there’s a decent chance.
I should add: I think it’s possible Trent’s stats are a little jacked up but also a L20 wizard with a smart build is pretty bad as is. Were I to create this as a monster stat block, with the understanding that I’ve never DM-ed for high level players (yet) I’d probably keep HP at a reasonable level and just pile on things like legendary resistances and extra spell abilities, since I still want to make an evil wizard feel like the classic glass cannon. So he’d still have 5 cantrips, the whopping 22 spell slots of a 20th level caster plus one free 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level spell from Spell Mastery/Signature Spells, all class abilities, and some feats that made him more impressive (metamagic adept seems very possible; give him some residuum and dunamantic enhanced abilities to boot and/or throw in some extra wizard school high-level features - eg, if he’s an enchanter, also give him an abjurer’s spell resistance and the ability to overchannel like an evoker).
As for how Matt would handle it - if it were like, a TPK scenario as described I’d at least let Caleb know it worked if Trent was nuked, as his final vision before death (also: in this scenario...Caleb is killed outright if he fails the 50% save. He’d take 320 damage.) If not then I might not say that Caleb saw it, but I’d narrate it for the other characters anyway so like, the player would know.
I have to leave to go to the TAZ Honey Heist virtual show now but I may do some probability stuff tomorrow to see the chances of Caleb surviving and Trent dying, for funsies.
In conclusion: probably not the greatest choice, but very cinematic if it happens.

How the Mighty Nein Play D&D:
Caleb:
Player:
Has read all of the sourcebooks and thus know them by heart. Still, surprisingly, does not comment on when someone uses a rule wrong. At least not out loud. Still has a tendency to make decisions for the group without asking first. Does not take notes. Will remember all the details anyway. Likes to play casters for the versatility. Big fan of druids especially, they’re hard with lots of different spells with tactical uses, and they have wildshapes. Does not like to talk a lot in roleplay, ‘cause he feels awkward, but if he does it turns out he’s pretty good at it.
DM:
As stated, knows all the rules. Plays by all the rules. Likes to do accents, but he’s bad at them all. Combat is slow and methodical. He can pause for a while in the middle of the enemies move and just think, but in the end he’s so good at the strategy that he has to lower the CR of his enemies to compensate. Has worldbuilding as a hobby, so by the time people are playing there’s an entire world with very intricate detailing to explore. Stories are very grounded in that finicky detail, like economics or business or strategy. Ever seen Spice and Wolf? (You should, it’s great.) It’s like that.
Beau:
Player:
Did not expect to get this invested. Now she’s up all night researching strats and optimisation guides. Most likely to multiclass. Enjoys playing offensive spellcasters for the tactics. Started off feeling dumb when roleplaying, but warmed up to it when everyone else started doing it. Never does an accent. Takes constant notes. Wants her nat 1’s to be described with as much loving detail as her nat 20’s. Flirts with every described sexy lady. Usually plays a sexy lady, sometimes a sexy enby. Once played a dude and had a hard time because on one hand she had to flirt with dudes ‘cause she is never in her life gonna play a straight character, but on the other hand: sexy ladies! From then on, if she plays a dude, he has to be bi.
DM:
Lots of combat. She has drawn battle maps and painted minis (with Jester) and has picked out clever combos of enemies for an interesting challenge. Also a lot of politicking. Not as much goofy voices as intrigue and spy games. Plans some great mysteries. Caleb’s pretty much the only one who can keep up with them because she packs them so full of small clues and hints that are easy to miss but integral to solve the puzzle. Will be disappointed when she finds out that characters the planned to be suave come off as creepy according to her players.
Nott:
Player:
Works hard at the roleplaying but doesn’t seem to get the hang of it. She has a good feel for her character but when someone tries to talk to her in character she freezes and stutters. Ends up preferring to talk in third person. Hoards dice. Very superstitious about them. Likes to play tanks so she can protect people. Sometimes she brings Luc and he can play a mascot critter l. Sometimes Yeza comes along and plays a healer. Nott will death glare the DM if they even come close to potential danger.
DM:
Has so many good ideas, and throws plot twists at you like you have no idea. Might come up with a plot twist in the middle of an arc and try to sneak the fact that it wasn’t always the plan past the group. Still very nervous for every session. Does not have a poker face. Picks favourites (mostly Caleb, sometimes Jester, maybe someone else too) and rewards them with special loot and more narrative attention (Caleb does not really like the attention, Jester really does). Sometimes Luc wants to play with them and she just can’t say no. That means an instant ban on cursing and some very easy fights. Sometimes Yeza brings snacks and gets roped into playing. He played when he was a kid, but hasn’t done it since then.
Molly:
Player:
Throws himself into roleplaying. Likes playing high charisma characters, especially bards and warlocks. Will seduce anything, especially since that means flirting with the DM. Most likely to pick up the Lucky feat since he likes saying fuck you to fate and deciding his rolls for himself. Second most likely to play a Halfling, after Nott, for the same reason.
DM:
Will seduce the player characters with every NPC. Most likely to wing a session. Has not read a single sourcebook. Also doesn’t know how the world works, so the world design might throw any players for a loop. Is this how politics work? Idk, it sounds fun anyway. Does not do any research and is proud of that fact.
Yasha:
Player:
Just glad to be here. Doesn’t speak a lot so the DM might get worried that she’s not enjoying herself, but when they talk to her afterwards they find that she’s been having a great time, she’s just more confortable with other parts of the game; like combat. Prefers fighters over casters, but is fine playing either a tank or a dpr, whatever makes her feel like she’s making a valuable contribution to the party.
DM:
All of her NPC’s have really standard “taken from a first name generator” names. Was really nervous for her first session, but found that DMing a game was a really nice way to make her friends happy, you can stick as close to or as far away from the rules as it suits you. That doesn’t mean she can’t bring out a real moody atmosphere or brutal boss fights when it counts.
On the flip side, might run a super fluffy game because expressing affection for people is so much easier through acts than words.
In general good at the “yes, and-“ game.
Caduceus:
Player:
Doesn’t really get the rules. What he does get however is characters. Not playing one, necessarily, he has a basic concept that he’s slowly working on fleshing out, but other people’s. He finds the roleplay between players absolutely fascinating, and sometimes forgets that he’s even playing ‘cause he’s so busy listening to everyone else.
Unsure of why all these numbers are necessary. Math? Dice? Why? He does think that how ever the dice rolls was the Correct outcome for the situation. Prefers not to play casters because remembering spells is a Lot and he’s a bit slow at reading and doesn’t want to make the whole group wait for him in combat. Probably likes Monk because it’s pretty easy but he still gets to have a high Wisdom.
DM:
Brings food. Brings candles. Brings music. Brings pillows and extra dice and tea for whoever wants. Has thought up deep characters that reflects parts of the soul and people he thinks relates to his players. This may just be therapy with dice. He does not know how to run combat. Would never fudge dice. A TPK is just fate, it was their time to go.
Fjord:
Player:
Has made the most badass character concept. Backstory reads like a checklist of interesting stuff the character’s done. Has an accent. Enjoys the roleplay, both with fellow players and the NPCs.
Enjoys getting out of his own low-self-esteem head and being useful and badass, which is why he might take low rolls badly sometimes. Likely to promote other people’s characters to do tasks because they’re good at them. Really enjoys the team-as-family aspect and group rapport. Plays a lot of Paladins because 1. They are naturally badass and heroic. 2. They get to fight and have magic. 3. He gets to fight in melee and still have his high charisma. He plays a lot of part-casters in general.
DM:
Accents, all of the accents. And mannerisms. Likely to use Mask of Many Faces to show you what a character looks like. Walks around when he talks, for full roleplay range. Plans setpieces and huge moments. All NPCs have recognizable quirks and a lot of personality. Generally likes very high concept and trope-y stories and characters.
Jester:
Player:
Gets really into her character concept. Most likely to react to things in real life with how her character would. Would try to romance other characters. Also enjoys the fighting, and especially describing her moves (gets -really- into the HDYWTDT). Would also be likely to derail the game with dirty jokes if she gets bored. Don’t put her next to Molly. Hoards dice because pretty. Nott steals dice from her so she steals them back. Don’t put her next to Nott either. Very versatile in class selection, enjoys both physically smashing face and magically smashing face. Her character concept don’t usually take into account what her class would be. Least likely to play a healer.
DM:
Do you want to act out a romance novel? All of the NPCs will be weird and quirky and probably pastiches of people she has seen at her mom’s place, but will be surprisingly deep if you press. She has painted minis for fighting and will get really into describing all of their awesome combat moves. Will put traps everywhere.

Magic:
River boat of the Styx: summons a small wooden raft, able to fit a maximum of 3 people inside of it. The boat is made completely out of wood, and has the full utilities of an amazing wooden boat.
Wisp Manifestation: Yuko is able to bring out the spirits around to aid him in his attacks, the type of utilities he has are dependent on color.
Blue: has water-like properties.
Red: increased force on impact.
black: causes feelings of dread.
White: increases slashing damage.
The wisps can be thrown and are around the size of golf balls.
scythe: 8 feet long, blade is quarter of an inch thick, and is one foot in length
Description: Yuko stand at 6 feet flat, his eyes changing color to various shades of red when, changing depending on his mood. His personality is generally laid back, finding enjoyment in almost all things. He smokes from a metallic pipe, and is extremely quick to anger due to his Sin being Wrath.

Lunatic Blue Eyes: Allows “Loony Inaba” to manifest himself from Music, also allowing him to take weaponry in and out of their own private mirror world.
Description: Stands at a height of 5'8. Music has sapphire colored eyes, is never seen without his dark brown cap. Music normally wears a black overcoat and tends to wear two silver earrings in his right ear. His fur color is a pitch black. He has a slight obsession with smoking, one that was attempting to get cut, he instead smokes catnip, just don’t let anyone know it.

Description: The little girl stands at a height of around 3'10, her favorite colors are light grey and black, normally being her colors of choice for her clothing. She generally wears long dresses and blouses, always keeping her hair long and neatly placed around her shoulders.

His body can dissipate into a more ethereal form of clouds.

Drinking Chains: The locks and chains around Sludge’s neck are able to stretch out to a maximum of four feet, the chains can sap the energy of a person, leaving them with a feeling of wanting to drink alcoholic beverages.
Smallest horns, strongest strength: Sludge possess strength enough to lift and throw 30x his weight, the strength stemming from the horns on his head. As they grow longer, he gets stronger. They can be cut off, but can regrow to ‘full’ height within a month.
Description: Sludge is roughly around the height of 5'4, always seen wearing his bartender outfit or a sleeveless plaid shirt along with a purple kilt. He has horns just underneath his ears and wears a lock and key around his neck along with chains. his fur is a soot-like grey. The chains when stretched out can reach up to 4 ft.

Dark Ax: A two handed weapon with the ax head stretching roughly 1 foot, the blade half an inch thick.
The pole is about 5’4 from bottom to top.
Description: He’s a ram who stands at 6’ flat, wearing more ‘comfortable’ clothing such as jeans and long sleeve shirts. His fur is a light brown and he has a dark brown spot on his left eye. He tends to be extremely laid back and lazy, rumors of him falling asleep while cooking all in reality are true.

Time Manipulation: Using a piece of silver, along with intense training from his former master, Ali is able to stop time for up to an hour while doing harsh physical labor. He can interact with all inanimate objects and adjust them to react within normal time. (I.E. throw a knife, in stopped time, and it flies when time is resumed. If he touches a living being, the being can move freely within the stopped time as long as they remain within 15 feet of the butler.
Description: Ali is a white lion who is 6'2, always seen wearing a suit. He tends to walk everywhere with a silver platter, always smiling and being quite kind to anyone he comes across.

It's all up to how creative the user is. It's an art form easily picked up, but hard to master. It is taught in downtown Silver Turn at the Makantash Theater  
Description: Vivi stands at 5'6, his light yellow scales are his second most predominant feature, the most noticeable thing are his eyes which shine a glorious emerald bright and true. River boat of the Styx: summons a small wooden raft, able to fit a maximum of 3 people inside of it. The boat is made completely out of wood, and has the full utilities of an amazing wooden boat.
Wisp Manifestation: Yuko is able to bring out the spirits around to aid him in his attacks, the type of utilities he has are dependent on color.
Blue: has water-like properties.
Red: increased force on impact.
black: causes feelings of dread.
White: increases slashing damage.
The wisps can be thrown and are around the size of golf balls.
scythe: 8 feet long, blade is quarter of an inch thick, and is one foot in length
Description: Yuko stand at 6 feet flat, his eyes changing color to various shades of red when, changing depending on his mood. His personality is generally laid back, finding enjoyment in almost all things. He smokes from a metallic pipe, and is extremely quick to anger due to his Sin being Wrath.

Smallest horns, strongest strength: Sludge possess strength enough to lift and throw 30x his weight, the strength stemming from the horns on his head. As they grow longer, he gets stronger. They can be cut off, but can regrow to ‘full’ height within a month.

He has horns just underneath his ears and wears a lock and key around his neck along with chains. his fur is a soot-like grey. The chains when stretched out can reach up to 4 ft.
