Album & EP Recommendations

It’s been a quiet week for new album releases, as it looks like everyone’s been saving their album drop for the end of April. This means unfortunately there’s no new recommendations this week, but on the bright side the next couple of weeks are looking very busy indeed. In the meantime, here’s a recap of some of the albums I’ve really enjoyed in the last month:

The Line Is A Curve by Kae Tempest

“I had a hunch from the teaser tracks that this was shaping up to be my favourite of Kae’s records and one of the Albums of the Year so far, and it seems indeed that my gut was right. Stunning, exquisitely crafted instrumentation and delicate, spellbinding lyrical majesty.”

Melt My Eyez See Your Future by Denzel Curry

Tracks of the Week

Heart Attack by Editors

It may have been quiet on the albums front this week, but thankfully we were gifted a tonne of great new tracks to tide us over, led by this excellent new one from Editors.

Heart Attack arrived alongside the news that award-winning electronic artist Blanck Mass has now joined the group full time, following 2019’s Blanck Mass Sessions, which featured reimagined versions of their last studio album Violence. He is not wasting any time making his presence felt either, as Heart Attack is a pulsating, synth-driven mini-epic, but with a typically Editors’ style anthemic chorus to keep the old school fans happy too.

It’s a sensational track, but it’s elevated even further by the mind-melting and utterly hypnotic AI-generated video that accompanies it. Created by pioneering director and visual artist Felix Geen, it’s a psychedelic, colourful and utterly dazzling work of art that simply must be seen to be believed – probably my favourite music video for a long time.

Free In The Knowledge by The Smile

The project from Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, as well as Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, has been creating a wild buzz ever since their electric debut on the Glastonbury livestream last summer. With great track after great track continuing to drop since, anticipation for the upcoming album has been locked at fever pitch for a while now - and thankfully we now have a date for its imminent arrival.

On the 13th May, their debut album A Light for Attracting Attention will finally be made available, with all previously released singles - Skrting On The Surface, The Smoke, You Will Never Work In Television Again and Pana-Vision (which recently debuted on the Peaky Blinders’ finale) - all making the final tracklist. Alongside the album news, the band also gifted another track, Free In the Knowledge, which may just be the best one yet.

Acoustic-driven with some hugely atmospheric and spellbinding orchestration, it arrived alongside a cinematic video filmed by director Leo Leigh – son of legendary filmmaker, Mike Leigh.

Sidelines by Phoebe Bridgers

The woman who continues to do no wrong – to coincide with her performances at this year’s Coachella in which she was joined by 2021 Mercury Prize winner Arlo Parks for a couple of duets, Phoebe also released her typically stunning new track, Sidelines. Taken from the soundtrack to Hulu’s new adaptation of Sally Rooney novel Conversations With Friends, it sees Phoebe further broadening her sonic landscape and offers fans possible insight into where she may be heading on her next record.

Down by Hot Chip

Elsewhere this week, Dance heroes Hot Chip announced their new album Freakout/Release, due to drop this August. The first teaser for the album is the opener, Down, which features an addictive groove reminiscent of their early hit Over & Over, but with some added soul-influence provided by a brilliant sample of Universal Togetherness Band’s More Than Enough.

When We Were Young by Architects

Shortly due to embark on their first UK Arena tour, metal behemoths Architects have dropped an anthemic new single this week. Their first new music since last year’s apocalyptic metal opera For Those That Wish To Exist, the band have hinted this is the start of their new era rather than an off-cut from that project. If it is the start of the next phase, then they continue to be as hard-hitting as ever, with the track boasting a huge singalong chorus and pummelling heavy riffs.

Memory Fracture by nothing, nowhere

Another heavy one, as emo-rap superstar Joe Mulherin (AKA nothing, nowhere) dropped this brutal banger this week. With melodic rap verses, but gut-punching, heavy rock swells and distorted vocals on the chorus, Mulherin’s music continues to have no boundaries. This is another excellent track from him and with each new release he continues to showcase his talent for innovative, emotive, genre-bending songwriting.

Morbid Fascination (Piano Version) by Blood Red Shoes

And finally, one of my favourite tracks of the last twelve months has had an ambient makeover this week. With the original song taken from their excellent 2022 album Ghosts On Tape, Blood Red Shoes have now re-released the album’s lead single as a haunting piano ballad and it’s, somewhat incredibly, even better than it was before – stunningly atmospheric and completely jaw-dropping.

Who are your favourite angels, God's of destruction and supreme kais introduced in the universe survival saga?

Cus is my favourite angel. She’s just really adorable and seems to have the most personality, and I like that she actually seems to care about the people in her universe. Shows that the angels aren’t inherently neutral, emotionally detached entities.

Marcarita is probably my second favourite, I just love her design and that she’s a Harley Quinn reference. Typical Toriyama there. Sour probably has my second favourite design, I don’t know if it’s just the yellow clothes provide a good colour balance but something about it just really stands out from the other angels in a good way.

I’m not sure who’s really my favourite God of Destruction (Well, of course it’s Beerus, but you said ones introduced this saga). Quitela most likely, him being a yellow mouse who’s a manipulative chessmaster is just really silly, but in a way that’s charming and interesting. Feels very original Dragon Ball to me. Him being legitimately cunning, considering his ploy with Sidra and the assassins, definitely helps make him look like the smartest of the Gods.

Heles though I think I prefer as a character. While the general descriptions of her being beauty obsessed may make her sound like a stereotype, she’s not really obnoxious about it and it actually seems to translate as her being genuinely good natured and well meaning, and seemingly having a good moral compass (Makes me really wonder why she props up Ribrianne so much, considering how selfish she can be). I like how reasonable and supportive of her team she seems, and her mannerisms are pretty fun to watch.

Belmod and Geene would probably be my favourites after them, Belmod because I like his design and how creepy he can come off, though seeming like a genuinely decent guy even though he’s basically been put into the position of antagonist, given his universes place as the major contender for the tournament’s endgame. Geene just because he looks cool, and given the one character moment we got with him and background info, sounds like he could be a pretty good character if the show gets around to giving him some decent screentime.

As for the Supreme Kais, probably Pell, Ea, Ogma and Roh in that order.

Pell because he feels like he has the most rounded personality. He’s kind of a muscle head on one hand, believing that raw strength is the most important aspect of fighting and his bios imply he’s a fitness junkie and probably the strongest of the supreme kais. Pretty macho sounding, but he also doesn’t seem to have any problem fawning over Kakunsa and Vikal’s whole “Power of love” moment with Heles, so it comes off like he has a soft side. Nicely goes against the typical sexist, “feminine traits are weak” attitudes often associated with “Macho” characters. On top of that, he lives up to his position as a supreme kai by showing genuine respect and care for his subjects, as we saw with that tender moment with him and Jimeze after Frieza brutalised him.

Ea I like because he’s just kind of fun to watch with his mannerisms and whole “Smart guy” routine. And Ogma because she seems really nice and well meaning, and her little freak out in episode 108 was kind of adorable.

And then Roh is an unlikeable jerk who’s full of himself, despite the fact that he seems like probably the main reason universe 9 is such a dump. But he’s an amusing jerk. His over the top mannerisms and pompous attitude are kind of fun to watch, doubly so seeing him get shown up for all his troubles.

Daddy Robert headcanons! (Almost completely about just Robert as a dad here...) --------------------------------------- Robert tries everything to get their little boy to sleep- he's not a fan of night time sleeping. One night he even tries singing to him as he carries him; he's not a bad singer and he has tried everything else. Only he's so tired he can't remember any songs other than 'Trap Queen' which is why Aaron walks in to the living room to find Robert with the finally sleeping boy, head on Robert's shoulder as Robert rhythmically pats/rubs his back while singing, "And I get high with my baby I just left the mall I'm getting fly with my baby, yeahh And I get right with my baby I be in the kitchen cooking pies with my baby, yeahh…" And Aaron asks him what the hell he's doing so Robert just shrugs and says it's working and he carries on. They then download the song- the baby loves it. It becomes his sleep time song and yes, people are weirded out. When the baby was first born, both Robert and Aaron took time off work to be with him. Robert used to strap him to his chest and have him there for as long as Aaron would let him. The baby didn't leave either of their arms for the first six weeks of his life. Robert still has issues where he wants the boy to know how much he loves him. He loves holding him no matter how big he gets. Robert knows everything about car seats. He can remove it from one car and fit it in another in under five minutes. He knows exactly what they're going to get next, he knows the brands, he knows the safety measures in them. He becomes the car seat expert. He has a playlist especially for the little boy in his car. It becomes different when he grows up a little bit, nothing makes a car journey better than having his boy dancing in his car seat and singing along to the songs. When he starts to talk, Robert spends the time asking him questions to get him to speak more. "What colour is daddy's car?" "Geen." "And other daddy's car?" "Boo." "What colour is Ollie's hat?" "Wed!" It's Roberts favourite thing to do. When Aaron is in the car with him he just grins the entire time, pride filling him at the sight of them. Robert doesn't want his son to ever feel like he doesn't have time for him. So if Aaron is busy or on a collection and Robert has to be at work he will take the boy, he won't shove him with a babysitter- sometimes he does because Vic demands time with her nephew- but mostly he brings him along. The little boy loves going to work with Daddy, he sets him up at Aaron's desk and gives him "paperwork" to do. He reads to the baby every night. Aaron does mornings, he's up earlier than Robert anyway and he likes getting the boy ready so he does those and Robert does nights- bath, story & bottle, bed. He has a constant list of books on his amazon as the child grows. He reads to him constantly, and when he has to be away for the night, Aaron sets him up on the phone or face time to read to him. When the boy gets sick, Robert spends the night in his room with him. He has done since he was born; first he spends the night in the rocking chair with the boy in his arms, not sleeping because every movement the boy makes startles him. As the boy gets older Robert sticks to just watching over him. Aaron does the same. They don't leave his side until he's better. Robert has this thing about museums. He wants their son to be immersed in culture. Aaron thinks he's a bit of a nerd but Robert doesn't care. Aaron did enjoy the museum with the dinosaurs. They've done one that more than once. Nothing means more to Robert than his little boy. When he had to go away for work for three days it killed him to be away, it was hard enough being away from Aaron, it was ten times harder being away from their son. When he got home Aaron told him he had a surprise. Robert has never cried so much than when his little boy looked up at him and said, "Love you Daddy." ❤❤❤❤

Sang karaoke? Te vaak, gelukkig is hier geen bewijsmateriaal van. No scrubs of die young zijn mijn to go liedjes.

Ice skated? Ja, maar ik ben er echt SCHLECHT in. Deze winter tot noch toe aan kunnen ontsnappen. Wat een talent is, als je weet dat we met de jongeren op mijn werk minstens 5 keer zijn gaan schaatsen.

Ridden a motorcycle? Achterop, in mijn puberjaren.

Ridden in an ambulance? Ja, twee keer maar ik was niet doodziek of zo dus beetje awkward mee van voor. Ene x had die ambulancier mij toegevoegd op facebook en begon die berichtjes te sturen, maar die haalde mijn naam uit privé gegevens. En toen heb ik dat doorgegeven aan het ziekenhuis en die waren er echt niet over te spreken. Dus sorry als die nu ontslagen is MAAR WAS BEETJE PERVIE.

Stayed in the hospital? Iets langer dan drie maanden in een ziekenhuis verbleven ja, rond mijn 21 of 22 jaar geloof ik? Ik voelde me al een tijdje niet goed in m’n vel. Kan me dat nu niet meer goed voorstellen, maar het had ook een leuk kantje: ZIEKENHUISBEDDEN. Ge kunt die langs alle kanten laten kronkelen en keren, echt ideaal voor serie’tjes te checken. Oh en een ijskast naast uw bed! (Nadeel: ‘s nachts komen ze om het uur met een pillamp checken if you’re still alive lol)

Broken bones? Mijn pols met het snowboarden. (Was op snowcamp met school letterlijk op dag 1 :)))))) hallo mijn naam is sjarel)

Last phone call? Oei heb ik even moeten opzoeken, met Cedric ne vriend die dronken was en de weg niet meer wist.

Watched someone die? Wat een random vraag, maar neen gelukkig niet.

Pepsi or Coke? Cola, maar soms kan ik echt craven naar Pepsi. Zo om de drie jaar of zo bedoel ik dan he.
