Since I have been rambling here a lot I will also ramble about my dear mdzs children
So these four are made because I joked about populating the female species in MDZS and then I made more...
Disclaimer: I am not Chinese so these names are very much like when Anime grabs random names for English characters. They don't make sense.
First RongQuan
I completely forgot what Chinese characters I grabbed for her name (something that means melting, I think?
The design idea for her is that of a simple looking woman
She became a disciple because she wanted to and her father loves her very much he used his family ties to get her in. Upon entering, it became very clear that he has absolutely no talent for cultivation. This, and the well known fact that she's here because nepotism, made her the subject of many disciples' teasing. To compensate for her lack of talent she became a push over, doing many menial tasks to contribute to the sect. She's too tired to feel mad about the treatment most of the time.
Post-canon:
She's doing the same thing she's always done. Her mother fears that being involved with a sect riddled with so much scandal might ruin her marriage prospects. She thought about agreeing with her mother for a solid minute but ultimately decided that if men can't handle being involved with her as a Jin disciple, they can't handle her at all and politely rejected to do as her mother asked.
Lan FeiRi
I also completely forgot what her name's Chinese characters are. (One of them is the character for sun, I think)
Her design idea is that of a fairy, I tried to make her hair have the silhouette of a butterfly for this. It's also why I chose something that would spell FeiRi lol
She is a child orphaned by a demonic cultivator and adopted by a Lan couple. She cultivated a little late so her cultivation isn't as good as it could've been but she's average on power, overall. She exudes nearly the same tranquil energy as Lan XiChen. This is just a facade though, she absolutely loves it when people she deems evil get the justice she thinks they deserve, she can be sadistic. The ultimate two-faced individual, she could be smiling on the outside but seething on the inside, caring on the outside but laughing out in joy over others' suffering on the inside.
Post canon:
She absolutely hates that the grandmaster of demonic cultivation is living just a few minutes away.
(she has one of my favorite designs among the mdzs ocs I made)
Nie QiaoLu
Again, I forgot what her name means.
I designed her last. I didn't know if my designs are outrageous already so this is me dialing back down. But she looked too simple with straight hair so I made it wavy.
She is the strongest female cultivator in her age group, She is a distant relative of Nie Huaisang. She used to be a quick-tempered child but when the reality of the Nie cultivation sunk in, she sought to find a way to minimize the possibility of qi deviation. Instead of finding some new techniques she found Hanguang Jun. She thought, surely, by imitating him she will be less susceptible to qi deviations and so she went ahead and lived her life with such belief. As if the natural consequence trying to imitate one of the twin jades, her social skills were stunted and she is disconnected from her emotions.
Post canon:
She came back to rejoin society and the first thing she heard was Hanguang Jun's recent marriage. Her reaction was, "Oh. Congratulations to him, I guess?" She's still unaware of the things happening around her. Someone needs to anchor her to the ground. (Her head is so empty she might just float away, never to be seen again...)
Ok. The Jiang kids I made plenty of first of all:
Yu Lilai
I do remember that her name is supposed to mean "beautiful future".
Lilai already has a whole post explaining her. She is my favorite to use of the bunch in the silly comic stuff I made because there's no stake in her. She's the kind of gag character you will see in an anime who has an eccentric yet loving and supportive family.
She's also my favorite of the bunch :3
I have no height chart for these kiddos anymore
Jiang Lian
Jiang RenJi (courtesy name)
His given name means "to unite" and the courtesy name means "sturdy foundation"
He is a distant relative of the main Jiang family. His great great grandmother left the sect to live a civilian life away from Yunmeng. He reentered the Jiang sect when he was eight because he heard about Jiang Cheng's story and felt really bad for him. He wanted to help rebuild his ancestral home.
He is the responsible and ever-so-reliable Shixiong! He is the guard dog to the sheeps that are the baby disciples. Though he lacks Lilai's talent in combat or XinXue's silver tongue, he is the person the baby disciples trust the most. A sturdy leader, fitting his name.
Xiao XinXue
You know how Wei Wuxian is abbreviated to WWX and Jiang Cheng is JC? Yeah. XinXue's name is just so it can be abbreviated to XXX. XinXue name means "new blood" I forgot what Xiao is supposed to mean though.
Her family was killed by demonic cultivators and Jiang Cheng saved her. She is also the first orphan the Jiang sect save whom they eventually took in as a disciple.
. She harbors a deep hatred for demonic cultivation and doesn't think anything is wrong with punishing them. In essence she represents the irl people who just hate Wei Wuxian and an answer to people who think demonic cultivation users are just poor unfortunate souls who had no choice.
She's wrong in some points and justified in other points. No one is telling her to let go of her anger but her friends, Lilai especially, are quick to tell her that she needs to direct that anger to the right place (and not to a man who was dead during the death of her family). She goes to RenJi to vent whenever she needs it.
(and RenJi is always there to tell Lilai that she really needs to be more gentle with her wording)
She's usually very mischievous. It's difficult to be mad at her because seeing her happy is a far cry from the catatonic girl they nursed back to consciousness. Surprisingly, she is the most nurturing of the disciples. It's an unspoken agreement that she handles the other traumatized kids they will save.
I planned to make more characters with funny abbreviations like, XD, LOL, OWO, etc but it's tiring to look for Chinese characters...
Finally, the nebulous existence of
Jiang Xie
She never had a name first, then someone asked and I had to give her a name. Then I forgot what the name was and I have no internet to look. For the first time she's gonna get referred to by name in a drawing so I just put Xie and was done with it. Then I forgot that it was Xie lol. I finally looked up Chinese characters to make names for others and I named her MiFu (overflowing blessing, something like that) then I saw the comic again where she is Xie and well Xie it is. Thankfully it could mean harmony which fit her despite her chaotic tendencies.
She was never planned to be anything beyond the first comic thingy. As someone who only watched the worst version (the anime/manhua) finding out that the temple scene is different from what really happened, especially people's outrage about it compelled me to both make something silly about it that can comfort the traumatized grape. Lol.
Then some people really liked her, I did have some not funny ideas in my head so I just drew that. Sometimes others would comment stuff that gave me ideas so I made those. In a sense she's a group effort I guess. She just developed like that. She is a joke character at her very core though. I wanted to hit a balance of funny innocent children stuff without making her just a walking ball of gags.
Ultimately she's a good kid who likes helping people by suggesting solutions only children would think of (Jin Ling has no dad? Swear brotherhood with her so they can share her dad!) It usually doesn't help but it makes the receiver of the advice feel better more often than not. Promising to break the legs of her loved ones' bullies is her love language.

Hey hey does anyone wanna see my headcanons about how the dead boy detectives crew and the Find Us Alive crew would interact? *vibrating at the speed of light*
Too bad ur getting them anyways!!!!!! U clicked on this read more uve become a willing participant can't leave now, only the main crews or else this post would really get too long
Generally I think Lancaster and Love might b the only ones actually able to see the ghost boys? But I'm saying they all can bcuz being in site 107 couhts as enough supernatural experience
OK ok first of all my favs!!!!!!!!! I think Charles Rowland and Nari Love would b besties bcuz pls❤️❤️❤️❤️ uhhhhhh in actuality I think there'd b alot of conflict there bcuz Charles would b trying to exude nice and polite energy and Love would Not Trust It she gets loud and shout and Charles would not react well methinks I don't think they'd start like physically fighting a. because Charles has a decent amount of restraint and b. because Love doesn't have any iron (shed try to punch him tho, love her) and eventually theyd figure it out and eventually I think they'd b making real bad jokes 2gether and talking about how weird (affectionate) their partners r
Harley is adopting Edwin as soon as he finds out about this boy and his languages, Edwin resigned himself to this fate w/ his even ancient Aramaic is easy w/ a bit of study line, Harley is explaining mandarin conjugation to him and Edwin will deal w/ it politely while having no idea what he's talking about bcuz this boy deals mostly in languages 4 magic and mandarin is not one of them!!!! (or maybe it is let Edwin and Harley b nerds 2gether 2k24)
Niko is #1 Kleinves shipper ik this in my heart she is getting 2 the bottom of whatever happened there and trying to make these ladies communicate!!!!!!! (She'd also b a harlanc shipper but this ain't about them) After she figures out that she can't force them 2 communicate she and Klein r watching anime/reading manga 2gether, Klein has been in the site 2 long!!!! She needs more to read and probably Nikos stuff isn't to her usual taste but she will read it
Poor girl Crystal is over here in the corner trying to make conversation w/ Raddagher and thoroughly failing, eventually they end up comparing experiences of being a surveillance officer (knowing everything about everyone) to being a psychic (knowing everything about everyone) they're akward but get along well enough
Lancaster and Charles would b friends :D Charles would like Lancasters ugly jorts and they would both b trying 2 b very smiley literally they're both trying to keep spirits up and pushing their own problems as far back as possible they're so similar and they're NOT calling eachother out on the hypocrisy (Lancaster is taking some time for himself and Charles is not a therapist he's just emotional support)
Edwin would find Raddagher endearing like he finds Niko endearing, but to a lesser extent, I think he'd like to chill out in the surveillance room (I think Crystal and Niko would like it too, at some point Love starts banning ppl 4 Raddagher cause it's getting too crowded 4 her) Raddagher might talk about sailing and Edwin might talk about sea monsters and they'd both nod and be like cool. and then move on
Crystal and Harley r swapping so many stories ik it Harley is like the stories guy Harley would tall about some weird bullshit that happened on site five years ago and Crystal would pull up a chair like tell me more until she has all the gossip, and then Crystal will complain to Harley about how annoying Charles and Edwin are and about the time she tried to go to hell and it didn't even work but hey she got her memories back atleast but like her memories suck and Harley would nod along while internally freaking tf out
Niko and Lancaster r teaming up, what r they teaming up 4? No one knows (Lancaster is telling Niko about Raddlove and Niko thinks they're very sweet) I think Lancaster and Niko as a team could b scary and chaotic and they deserve to be
Charles and Raddagher r not saying a word the entire time they interact Charles will try, Raddagher will react grumpy and then Charles will do his own stuff in her presence for like an hour before fucking off, they both think the other are okay (Raddagher's thought on Charles "He's fine", Charles' thought on Raddagher "she's aces") I feel like there's a mutual understanding of Don't mess w/ my ppl I don't mess w/ ur ppl while the groups interact
Charles and Harley r complaining 2gether, Charles complains about not being able to eat spaghetti while Harley understands this as The Worst Thing that can happen to a person and Harley complains about botany while Charles swears they're evil and tries to hold back a laugh
Edwin and Klein in eachothers presence would b a little bit unbearable❤️ I think Edwin would b interested in what research does and Klein would b interested in magic rocks and theyre badgering eachother 4 information at very high speeds
Lancaster and Edwin r having v deep emotional conversations about repressing who u r and how it hurts u in the long run and how they'd go thru everything bad in their life again as long as it brought them back to this point w/ these ppl, or Lancaster is trying to give that ghost red bull (who doesn't want to see a ghost on red bull? and tbh this ghost could use it)
Niko and Love would b so cool, I think Niko would LOVE Dumptruck (Edwin would find Dumptruck fascinating, Charles would b a bit put off by him, Crystal wouldn't care) and I think she'd help Love remember words when she's having a hard time
Niko and Raddagher would respectfully not interact that much, I don't think they'd dislike eachother theyre just both way too blunt to develop deep emotional connections I think
Charles and Klein keep accidentally stumbling into emotional conversations they don't MEAN to but one second theyre chatting shit about "kids these days" and talking about the 80s and the next Klein is talking about how her impulsiveness endangers ppl whenever she's put in charge and Charles is talking about how he's scared he's just like his dad and holy shit it's 1 am and one of them needs sleep
#Dead boy detectives#find us alive#Do i think anyone else is into both of these shows? no#Will i keep posting as if they are until maybe its true?#yes#dbd fans u should listen to fua and fua fans u should watch dbd#dead boy detectives on netflix scp: find us alive on spotify and youtube

DRAGOOOONNNNNN YOU ARE THE ABSOLUTE SWEETEST
these are so good, and Az running on 30 minutes of sleep and 3 cups of coffee is SO ACCURATE AHSIAJAVZUAJABSJA😂😂😂😂
I didn't expect to actually cry in my office today at work but here I am, tearing up because you drew my babies😭🥺🥺🥺❤️❤️❤️❤️
I also didn't expect art of them to affect me so much but it really did. This is so special for me. AND YES NAMES IS SHOULD TELL YOU THOSE--
OK IN NUMBER ORDER:
1. Terry Meete - 56 year old man, single, owns and operates a small construction company. Was medically discharged from the Army 20 years ago due to getting shot in the knee (dumb boys not minding their gun safety on base😒). Gets around fine most days but uses a cane for support. Houses and employs Az and Tim and also houses the 3 kids.
2. Timothy Heights - 24 year old man, single, former drug addict but has been clean for 3 years🎉 works for Terry and loves working out. Hoping to someday be a personal trainer and work with others struggling with addiction. Has a bit of a temper but is a good man🥰
3. Azawa Meyers - 26 year old man, engaged, also works for Terry. Loves to garden and tease. Killed a man when he was 19 but its.... Complicated. Not sure what he wants to do long term but is currently busy planning his wedding.
4. Raven - 1 year old boy (physically 13-14). He is a Hazeling who showed up suddenly and quickly attached himself to Esther Meete (Terry's neice and Az's fiancee -not pictured). Not much is known about Hazelings but he is being kept safe and secret from the world. He's a well meaning boy and loves learning but is prone to fall into spells of anxiety.
5. Wind - baby (physically 12 ish). A Hazeling who was born very dramatically into the world. She has immediay latched onto Az for unknown reasons and is a sweet sunshine girl. She is prone to becoming very lonely very quickly when left alone.
6. Stink (Wind named him blame her lol) - baby (physically 12 ish). Also a Hazeling born on the same day as Wind. He also had a very alarmingly dramatic encounter with Tim and has been taken in by the group to protect him. He's confident but has a hard time controlling his temper. He follows Tim around like a puppy but would absolutely deny it.
7. Esther Meete - 23 year old woman, engaged. Finishing her last semester of college for a Bachelors in Education. Currently in her last months working as a student teacher for a 6th grade class. She absolutely exudes mom energy but is a complete worry wart and struggles with anxiety. Has basically adopted Raven as her son though he lives with Terry and the boys.
I'm also gonna give you more than you asked for and show more art of them! Granted, I did this all in 2021 so it's a bit older but hey, YOU GOT ME EXCITED AGAIN HEHE
The vampire pic, arrow to the knee costume and the yin and yang costume are dumb halloween outfit ideas haha. Azawa chose his and Esthers prop lol. The dummy🥰
The next is a completely out of context short comic I drew (again, in 2021) . Don't think too badly if Stink, he's a good boy I promise🥲
Last is a panel redraw!
ok so a little bit ago i asked @kikker-oma if I could make fanart of some of her own Ocs because I was very intrested in their design and story. I drew 3 of them today (no color! Sorry I'm at church where color pencils don't exist) so yeah
Here is the original. I drew the guy with the Mohawk, the kid with the green hair, and the man on the right. I'm sorry I have no clue what their names are lol
My take of them are under the cut
So there they are! I did my best but my eyes have been super watery for no good reason👍🏻 Gosh I love allergies. So yeah, there you go. I'm happy with how they turned out. Remember that they DO NOT BELONG TO ME. They belong to @kikker-oma

☆★ [ richard madden + he / him + cismale ] ☆★ did you know that [ joshua hawkins ] has lived in erie for [ nineteen years ] now? the [ 28 ] year old [ musician / dj ] is known to be [ loyal ], yet [ immature ]. which is fitting considering they are a/an [ sagittarius ]. whenever they pass by on the street, i can hear [ say my name by zyra ] blasting through their headphones. they remind me of [ gummy candies, vintage videogames, glittery nail polish ], and it really wouldn’t be erie without them!
trigger warnings: drugs, overdose.
call him jox, josh, j-hawk, jojo, joshkosh b’gosh, joshy.......tbh all the nicknames !!!!
@acedarley‘s brother, the only biological child of gil and beverly hawkins. he was three years old when they adopted ace and though they got off on a rocky start, he would literally die for her ok he considers ace as one of his bestest friends even tho he’s a lil shit to her sometimes (most of the time).
originally from detroit, but his family moved to erie when he was 9 and ace was 16.
diagnosed with adhd as a kid, and after trying several classes and sports and whatnot that he begged his parents to enroll him to, he was able to discover a love for music. fun fact: he can play 7 instruments.
attended carnegie mellon where he majored in instrumental performance (focusing on the violin) minoring in music technology. while his major gave him classical training, it was his minor that allowed him to experiment with the medium and format and that’s what led him to trying out electronic music.
he started posting his own music on soundcloud for which he gained a bit of following. he’d post stuff like THIS but then started leaning more towards a more pop sound.
he was easily able to launch his music career after college, mostly playing in clubs in new york, though he is, by no means, famous. he goes by the stage name JOX.
working in the nightclub scene and attending parties sometimes for five consecutive days a week sort of.....made him fall into a drug habit. he developed a dependence on pills in particular, chugging down what he can get his hands on.
od’d in his lover’s bed (possibly wc??) after which he finally admitted himself to rehab. this was aroooound 3 yrs ago??
after 6 months in an inpatient treatment facility, he moved back to pennsylvania and tried to stay out of the nightclub scene to stay clean. he opted instead to make music in his bedroom, shifting his sound to something a little more mellow to reflect his current state.
after a year, he tried going back to dj-ing in clubs to introduce his new sound, but......relapsed and started using again. this would go on for at least a year and a half before he ended up back in the hospital.
recently just out of rehab AGAIN and is now staying with his sister and his sister’s husband while he tries to figure himself out from here.
extras:
his music, i imagine, is very soul-y and synthwavey. the ‘sound claims’ i have for him are a blend of JAI WOLF, JAMIE XX, ODESZA, and CHET PORTER. v 70s and 80s nostalgic, stuff like that.
that said, he’s not famous famous. like, at the end of the day, he’s just a guy who likes to be lowkey, stream himself playing videogames on twitch, skate w/ his friends, rip bongs. just goof around overall. i imagine him a lot like CHET PORTER ON INSTA in that sense lmao.
also exudes being roman roy from succession energy X, X, X.
chaotic bisexual. also has a huge lgbtq+ following. an mlm dj??? sign them up 💯
mostly dated men tho. older men. but that’s bc he likes to project himself (or rather, who he can’t be) on guys who seem to have their life together. except said guys are looking for stability by that point, and he is anything but stable. he likes dem dem daddies tho 👌
mostly he’ll flirt with anyone tbh. his libido knows no bounds.
sag sun, cancer moon, gemini rising.
he’s so fucking whiny. bULLY HIM.
connections:
people he’s collabed with, whether by remixing their music or producing music for them
POTENTIAL ROOMMATE PLS he needs to move out of his sister’s :(((
his ex from his first overdose. he hasn’t spoken to them since then because he feels embarrassed for what he put them through.
people he used to hang with in nightclubs.
ride or die !!!! either someone he grew up with in erie or someone from new york!
childhood frenemies now turned fwbs……THE INTRIGUE !
THE OTHER HALF OF HIS BRAIN CELL :’) aka someone who, when in the same room with him, will make people go ‘OH GOD THERE’S 2 OF THEM!’
hilarious disaster tinder hookup. the possibilities are endless with this one.
these are just rough ideas at the top of my head tbh but i’m lich rally so easy with connections so if you’ve got an idea, chances are i’m 10/10 down to riff off with you about it <3

If Ryan is sporty-nerdy, I think Shane is maybe a chaotic(demon) hipster-nerd. Like, his soft love of history and his childlike joy, mixed with him demanding that demons and ghosts show themselves somehow by ripping his spine out or something, idk I just think he's an interesting mix of a person too lol. I've never seen a more softly chaotic person and it's wild
I mean, right? Usually skeptic/hipster nerdy guys especially with that much chaotic energy, exude a great deal of general hostility but he’s just so chill, so affable and So intelligent. I think a lot of it is he doesn’t have that much a thirst to prove anything about himself; he simple is who he is and that is a remarkable quality in a human being.
Not to mention, he gets excited about stories in, like you mentioned, such a childlike way. I imagine that’s part of what makes him such a cinephile and a love for history is he just loves to sit and listen to or read about great tales with loads of twists and a lot of hilariously clever characters. I can imagine him being so much fun to speak to about your favourite book or that he’d be rife with a lot of sudden trivia.
He’s a smart man too. You can see how quick like a whip some of his responses are, but can I just mention how he isn’t the sort who adopts intelligence like some guise of superiority, he simple knows what he knows and in terms of sociopolitical leanings, he gets objective and detailed about how certain systems are wrong and he encourages free thinking as well as not allowing any childborn prejudices and preconceived notions alter his ability to accept and adapt to new knowledge. He’s also oh my god, this is gonna sound so weird but I am absolutely attracted to people who can just admit it when they’re wrong without fuss and Shane is one of those people.
So much about Shane reminds me of a book character because so much of himself is just laid out like ‘here we are; this is me as I was written and that’s all you’ll get and that’s ok.” He has such a deep and abundant supply of sarcasm on hand too and his delivery of it is so dry that sometimes I wonder if people don’t often misunderstand him.
His voice too, though; his strange but interesting unique cadence; the way he speaks with lilting kind of sing-song enunciations and funny exclamatory tones. I’m thinking right now of how just reading a fan’s name in one of the more recent q+a’s he saw the name “theresa” and just went, “Theresa!?” with such affection and incredulity. lol that’s obviously not my name but I just felt such a rush of feeling for him.
Can we talk about his vocabulary a bit too? He can go anywhere between sounding like he was plopped down here from the 1940′s and is having a fantastic time absorbing every bit of neo cultural dadaism in his speech to a seasoned millenial like myself exhausted with simple swears and time-tested colloquialisms and straight-facedly uttering a word like ‘Baller.’
And finally, the level to which he will go to make the people around him and himself laugh. He is a vent for comedy and he’s so damn funny. If anyone else conceived of a trollish epic like the hot daga in the simple effort toward being a little shit who Commits to his bit, it wouldn’t be half as good because he generates actual story; lampshades plotholes and contrived literary devices at the same time as providing the whole thing with a strong array and variety of voices.
And, last of all, he Sings. Good lord, can he sing! I still vibe with Plupple Honeymoon and pray for the day to come when he puts up the Hot Daga soundtrack on spotify.
What a guy! I support and love a man named Shane Madej!

Dirt to Soil: One Family's Journey Into Regenerative Agriculture
youtube
By Dr. Mercola
Gabe Brown is a pioneer in regenerative land management, a holistic strategy that helps restore soil health. Last year, I visited his 5,000-acre farm in Bismarck, North Dakota, on my 63rd birthday. We reviewed many of his techniques in "How to Use Regenerative Farming Principles to Grow Healthier Food in Your Own Garden."
Here, we discuss Brown's book, "Dirt to Soil: One Family's Journey Into Regenerative Agriculture," which expands on the information discussed in that interview.
Brown's farm, which he runs with his wife and son, was founded by his in-laws in 1956. They were conventional farmers, using tillage, monoculture and synthetic fertilizers and herbicides. Brown and his wife purchased the farm in 1991.
"I grew up in town, so agriculture was new to me," Brown says. "I had a couple of degrees from North Dakota State University in animal science and agro-economics. I learned the industrialized, commoditized production model. My father-in-law, when we returned here, also taught me those principles.
Then what happened ... we'd be tilling the soil and watch the top soil blow away. I was always wanting. I couldn't learn enough. I studied and read Allan Savory's work on holistic planned grazing. I read about no-till. I went down the path of changing our grazing model. I bought a no-till drill.
What really changed our lives were four years - 1995 through 1998 - when we lost three crops to devastating hail storms and one crop to a drought. We had four years of basically no cash grain income or no crops to harvest. That put us in pretty dire financial straits. The bank won't loan us money anymore to buy all these expensive inputs.
I had to learn, 'How do I take that dirt that I had at that time and make it into productive soil?' That set me on a 25 plus-year journey - I'm still on that journey - of converting dirt to soil. That's how the book came about.
That got us to the point where we are today, where a group of us spend the majority of our time traveling around North America, trying to teach other producers to take their operations into their own hands and make a difference by producing truly nutrient-dense foods …
I really think God purposely led me down this path and said, 'OK. I'm showing you this to force you into a different type of production model.' That's the model of regenerative agriculture.
I tell people, 'Those four years were the hardest thing we ever could have gone through, but it was absolutely the best thing that could happen to me, because I never would have gone down this path if we had not been a subject to those natural disasters.'"
A Different Way of Seeing
In 1997, Brown met Don Campbell, a rancher from Alberta, Canada. "He said this to me and it stuck with me ever since: 'If you want to make small changes, change the way you do things. But if you want to make major changes, change the way you see things.'"
That made Brown realize he needed to change the way he views soil. It's not just dirt. It's a living, functioning ecosystem. The problem is that most farmers do not treat it as such. He realized that by focusing on what the soil needs to thrive, nutrients are automatically made available to the plants, allowing him to produce nutrient-dense food.
In his book, "Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations," David Montgomery outlines historical disasters, noting that millions of tons of topsoil erode each year into the Mississippi basin. Globally, some 4 billion tons of this precious resource is lost annually.
The historical precedent is to farm the land until it's used up and then relocate. But we're now getting to the point where there's nowhere left to go. Brown is promoting the transition away from that, teaching ways of optimizing the soil we have.
"An interesting analogy that I like to give that puts it into perspective for people is if you hold up a sheet of paper, just a newspaper or a book, the thickness of that thin sheet of paper is the equivalent of 1 ton of topsoil per acre. If we have a windy day, if you have bare-tilled soil, you're going to lose a ton of topsoil on an acre of land. That's unacceptable …
What we're trying to enable people to see is the fact that we can stop it. It's just a matter of following nature's principles. Let's work with nature to cover the soil, to have green, growing plants, to cycle that carbon out of the atmosphere and put it back in the soil in that cycle where it belongs. It will lead to the betterment of all society and all ecosystems," Brown says.
At present, less than 5 percent of farmers and ranchers worldwide have adopted these practices, but growth is exponential. Regenerative farming is now doubling every year. "Those of us who are out touting the benefits of regenerative agriculture are overwhelmed with producers who want to make a change," Brown says.
The Rural Crisis
According to Brown, there's a real crisis going on in rural America right now, with suicide rates being at an all-time high among farmers and ranchers. Most are struggling financially as a result of low commodity prices and overproduction of basic commodities, and this crisis is proof positive that the current production model is not working.
"We're in this production model where it's all about pounds and yield, and it's not about producing truly nutrient-dense foods in a way that can regenerate our ecosystem. We have to change this model," he says.
Aside from changing mindsets about how to produce food, Brown is also teaching farmers how to become true entrepreneurs; how to actually get their goods to consumers.
"One of the things we do on our operation is we have an open-door policy, meaning any person can drive on our ranch at any time and look at anything they want. To me, that's the best.
You can have all these labels and standards, but if people see it with their own eyes, if they get to know the farmer or rancher and see what we do, see how we care for our animals, see how we care for the soil, that builds trust.
Once they taste the product and their bodies will be satiated - their bodies will know, 'This is good. This is nutrient-dense. I want it,' and then they're a customer for life."
Five Principles of a Healthy Soil Ecosystem
One of the benefits of the regenerative methods Brown teaches is the retention of moisture. Last year, they got just 5.6 inches of rainfall. But if you focus on the symbiosis between plants and soil, dry spells can be tolerated. To have healthy plants, you need healthy soil, and by viewing the soil as an ecosystem, you can tremendously increase the water holding capacity of the soil.
The key is to concentrate on what the soil needs first, and this is true whether you're working a small backyard garden or a large farm. As explained by Brown, there are five principles of a healthy soil ecosystem. The type of livestock, the equipment and varieties of crops may vary, but the principles remain the same:
1. Use the least amount of mechanical or chemical disturbance possible - Keep tilling to a bare minimum and strive to avoid all synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides.
The more you till, the faster the soil degrades and is destroyed, as it destroys soil aggregates and mycorrhizal fungi, which houses the microorganisms needed for nutrient transfer. Similarly, by adding synthetic nitrogen to the soil, the biology is radically altered - it starts consuming carbon in the soil aggregate, which destroys the soil structure.
And without soil structure water cannot infiltrate, move throughout the soil profile and be stored via organic matter. The soil aggregates also provide the home for soil biology which is critical to producing nutrient dense food.
2. Armor the soil surface with living plants - Forest and prairie land is completely covered with vegetation, and this is the environment farmers need to emulate. That vegetation protects the soil not only from wind and water erosion, but also from excessive heating and cooling. These living plants are what end up actually "growing" topsoil.
3. Have living roots in the soil as long as possible - This is an extension of armoring with cover crops. Soil is formed from growing plants that take in carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, and release it as "liquid carbon" through the roots, depositing it back into the soil, where it attracts microorganisms that ultimately end up providing the plant with all the nutrients it needs to grow.
So, to grow topsoil, you need living roots in the soil for as long as possible throughout the year to keep the carbon cycle going, and to feed the biology in the soil.
4. Diversify - Having a diverse array of plant life is essential, and cover crops fulfill this requirement as well. Home gardens will also benefit from cover crops, helping to improve the soil, attract beneficial insects and capture more sunlight (energy). Brown explains:
"We'll plant corn, but then along with the corn, there will be vetches, clovers and understory growing underneath that corn. We're not only feeding the soil microorganisms from the root exudates of that corn plant, but also from all these legumes. And then the legumes help take atmospheric nitrogen and provide it to the corn plant.
People think those other plants will compete with the corn crop, but nature doesn't work that way. Nature is much more collaborative than competitive.
We do the same thing in our garden. We will have a row of sweet corn, but right next to it, we'll have a row of peas, and on the other side, a row of beans. The row may be a monoculture crop, but growing together are all these different species and flowering species attracting all the pollinators and the predator insects.
We haven't used pesticide on our ranch in over 20 years. The reason is there's no need to. We have the predator insects that keep the pests in balance. There are 1,700 beneficial species of insects for every species that is a pest."
5. Integrate livestock and other animals, including insects - Flowering plants that attract pollinators and predator insects will naturally help ward off pests that might otherwise decimate your main crop.
While many believe livestock are contributing to the climate change problem, it's important to realize this is only true for animals raised in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Allowing animals to graze freely is actually part of the solution.
Centuries ago, large herds of bison and elk moved across the landscape, foraging, depositing manure and trampling vegetation into the ground. All of this is part of the natural cycle that is missing when animals are kept in CAFOs.
As noted by Brown, "If we remove the animals from the ecosystem, we can grow a plant and we can pump some carbon into the soil, but not nearly as much as if we have animals grazing. So that's the two keys: living plants, and then we have to integrate animals again."
CAFO cattle produce methane, which is destructive to ozone, but the reason they produce methane is because they're raised on an unnatural diet of grains, which they're not designed to eat. This unnatural diet alters the gut microbiome in the animals. So, it's the model by which they're being raised that is causing the problem. Brown explains:
"Methanotrophs are organisms that feed on methane that livestock expel. As an animal is out grazing, these methanotrophs take care of that methane. Well, we don't have that in the feed lots and in confinement. There are no methanotrophs.
The other thing is the fossil fuel usage to produce and harvest all of the grains … It's a tremendous fossil fuel usage that we can get away from if we switch to a more regenerative production model."
youtube
Yes, It Is Possible for Animals to Graze Through Winters
Most people think it's impossible to raise a grass fed animal in the winter, especially in North Dakota, but that's not true. Cattle can be raised on grass anywhere, year-round. Brown explains:
"Animals adapt to the environment. Our cattle graze for the majority of the year. In fact, some winters, we're able to literally graze through the whole year without feeding any processed feeds. We do get some major blizzards here. At those times, we're prepared.
We put up some forage and hay bales, but we leave them out on the land where that forage was growing. And then our cattle graze on those bales at such time when they can't physically graze grass.
By leaving the hay bales out there, the cattle are grazing there. They leave their manure there. The nutrients from the bale are left right there, so it's adding carbon to the ecosystem. It's a process that keeps that land healthy. Carbon is the most limiting factor in production agriculture today. Also, it is much healthier for the animal to be out grazing rather than being confined in a CAFO."
Repopulating the Ecosystem
Soil is not the only thing that benefits from regenerative land management. Wildlife also diversifies and is augmented. When Brown and his family took over the farm, they never saw deer or pheasants. Sightings of songbirds and grouse were minimal.
Today, he can sit on his porch any evening of the week and count up to 100 deer on his land. Pheasants, hawks, owls, grouse, partridge and myriad songbirds have moved in. Last year, the Audubon Society did bird surveys on his land and found nesting piping plover, an endangered species of shorebird. They figured that should be impossible, as these birds nest near rivers and beaches, yet the nearest river is 10 miles away.
"If you build it, they will come," Brown says. "These animals, insects and birds, they all know what's healthy. They know what they need as far as habitat and food to survive. It's a wonderful thing to be able to see all that life on one's farm or ranch.
A few years ago, I had one field that was 30 acres of corn, but it was nongenetically modified (GMO) corn, open-pollinated, no synthetics on it, no pesticides, because we just don't use any of that. My neighbor had 600 acres of corn right next to me.
Well, every evening, up to 75 deer would walk out of his corn, where they had bedded during the day, walk over half a mile to my field, and that's where they would eat. If that doesn't tell you something, I don't know what does."
How the USDA Farm Program Blocks Progress
As mentioned, regenerative farming is growing exponentially. It could grow even faster, were it not for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the current farm program, which subsidizes junk food ingredients. The farm program also offers revenue insurance or crop insurance to farmers, but there are strings attached.
If you want crop insurance and subsidies, you have to use the current production model, meaning you have to grow single crops (monocultures), and production is completely focused on yield. No attention is paid to the impact on the soil or the ecosystem at large.
What's worse, farmers may find it difficult to get a loan unless they take part in this program, and if they do, the program dictates which crops will give them the greatest revenue insurance, meaning guarantee them a certain price.
Needless to say, farmers will grow whatever crop is going to give them the greatest financial return, be it corn, soybeans, cotton or spring wheat. As a result, price is driven down due to overproduction, while simultaneously degrading our soil resources.
"This is the vortex farmers and ranchers are in. They're stuck in a hamster wheel going nowhere," Brown says. "My book is the story of our journey and what we did to get out of that trap, what we did to take control of our own destiny.
Instead of relying on the government to dictate these things, let's be a price maker instead of a price taker. Let's do it in a way that we can regenerate our resources …
The mantra lately for many companies is, 'We want to be sustainable.' I tell farmers and ranchers, 'Why in the world would we want to sustain a degraded resource? We can't afford to be sustainable. We have to be regenerative.' The five principles I share in this book are those that will empower people to be regenerative."
Twofold Change Needed
As noted by Brown, the change we need is twofold. First, farmers and ranchers must decide to make a change. To help them do that, Brown and his partners at Soil Health Consultants formed the Soil Health Academy.
They travel around the world teaching farmers how to take control of their own destiny. Second, consumers must demand change. You must demand nutrient-dense foods rather than empty calories.
"Consumers, through their buying dollars, can vote and say, 'Hey, I'm only going to spend my buying dollar at those farms and ranches that are producing nutrient-dense food.' When consumers are educated enough to spend their money that way, that will truly change production agriculture," Brown says.
"Now, I'm just going to make a prediction. I talk about the principle of diversity and how people have been growing monoculture cash crops. We're seeing some very exciting things occurring right now with what's called 'polyculture cash crops.'
A farmer wouldn't just plant one crop in his field, he'll plant several species together. That creates these synergies, feeding soil biology, cycling more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil, and increases the profitability for the farmer …
I think it's going to grow very quickly. It can't happen soon enough in my book … And I would like people all over the world to start supporting local. Buy local. Get to know your farmer or rancher."
More Information
If you're a farmer, you can contact Brown's group, Soil Health Consultants. They recently launched a new website where you can find a lot of information on regenerative agriculture. Also be sure to pick up a copy of Brown's book, "Dirt to Soil: One Family's Journey Into Regenerative Agriculture," in which you'll learn more about the core principles.
"Most importantly, there are people using these practices in every country all over the world. Seek them out," Brown says. "One of the things we like to teach people is that this has multiple ramifications. We take carbon out of the atmosphere using regenerative agriculture principles.
We hold nutrients on the farms and ranches, instead of having them [contribute to] the dead zone in the Gulf and the problems with the drinking water in the Great Lakes, and the shortage of water in the Southwestern United States.
We can heal the water cycle. We can heal the nutrient cycle. We're going to produce more nutrient-dense food. We're going to have a healthier society because of this. This has ramifications across many fronts. We're not talking about simply farmers, ranchers and gardeners here. We're talking about all society…
I encourage people to take it upon themselves. I end my book with a story about a lady in the inner city who called me, asking what she can do to produce healthy, nutrient-dense food for the children in the inner city.
I challenge the readers who are reading my book to do something. If you're a consumer, vote with your buying dollar. If you're a farmer or a rancher or a gardener, do something in the practices you use to produce nutrient-dense food. But all of us can make a difference."

Andrew Bogut, Children, and Christmas: TRAUMATIZED BY HIS PARENT'S ARREST, A S WEET, SCARED YOUNG BOY JUST WANTS TO GO HOME Id 32426, @ 1 Yrs., 4 Mos. 58 lbs of Love, Waiting w/Hope Manhâttan ACC レ TO BE KILLED – 12/13/2018 JAX went through a traumatic experience. The cops came to his home where he was resting comfortably by his parent’s side, when all of a sudden the knock on the door came, the loud voices screaming on top of one another “Police, OPEN UP,” and the charging through the door. His parent was wrestled to the ground and handcuffed and in his fear and terror, poor JAX fled out the door, trying to get away from the scene. A police officer followed him, but Jax was so scared that he growled at him. So then he was darted in, tranquilized, and dumped at the Manhattan Center where he awoke to many strangers, people he didn’t know, scents and smells that had become a long ago nightmare to him, and absolutely NO sign of the person he loved most in the world. What a nice present for Christmas right? You cannot explain to these poor dogs what is happening to them or why. And this is not JAX’s first rodeo, he was here before when he was just a baby, and back then he had an optimistic spirit, hope, happiness, and only cuddles for everyone he met. In fact, the shelter staff mention that back during his first stay he was playful with all the pups in playgroup. They remember him, they remember his sweetness. How can we possibly judge JAX over a year later, especially now after what he has been through. Behind his confusion is the innocent heart of that young puppy, not yet beaten down by the reality of his situation. Won’t you help him find a new home so he will not be executed tomorrow for the sins of his father? Share, crosspost, tag and pledge for this poor boy who only dreamed – ever – of having a long and happy life with a loving family. Prove to him his dream can still come true. If you are an experienced foster or adopter in an adult only home (kids over age 13 ok) hurry and MESSAGE our page or email us at [email protected] to foster or adopt him now. Being Alone, Click, and Dogs: NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE- A GOOD BOY. A FINE WALKER WONDERFULLY SOCIAL PLAYFUL, CURIOUS. WELL MANNERED WITH PEOPLE & OTHER DOGS! PERFECTION! FINLEY, THE WHOLE PACKAGE! ID 36897, 3 YRS. OLD, 60 LBS., WAITING FOR YOU, MANHATTAN ACC TO BE KILLED 8/22/18 FINLEY is not just a pretty face – he’s the WHOLE PACKAGE! Come get the dog of your dreams, folks, he’s great with people and he’s a “Dog’s dog.” <3 A volunteer writes: “You could be mistaken for thinking we're running a doggie modeling agency at the Care Center with an elegant gent like Finley strolling around! His sculpted cheekbones and soulful eyes alone are the stuff of envious daydreams, but this good boy is so much more than just a pretty face. He's also a fine walker, seemingly very house trained and no guarder of toys, and he won our staff over on the spot with his wonderfully social manners in playgroup. A real 'dog's dog' who'd rather be outdoors living life to the full than inside lazing on a couch, Finley's the perfect teammate, running and leaping enthusiastically round the yard with any new pup who cares to join in the game. He'll even tailor his energy levels and play style to their own, 'helicopter tail' wagging joyfully all the while. Playful, curious and well-mannered, Finley is the full pet package, and if you're looking for a fun new addition to your four-legged family, the search ends here. Meet him at our Manhattan Care Center and bring the whole crew!” PRIVATE MESSAGE our page or email us at [email protected] for assistance. Polite, well mannered Finley is a Playgroup STAR! https://youtu.be/gXT-MRcAkjo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ7JgNUsY34 FINLEY, ID # 36897 @ 3 Yrs. Old, 60.6 lbs.
