Robin glares at Steve, a little more heat in her gaze than there normally is. They’ve managed to escape Hawkins and the Upside Down bullshit. The kids are grown and safe. College and rock stardom. She’s finally gotten Steve somewhere safe. But that safe has a caveat.
“You cannot flirt with him,” she tells him seriously.
Steve is her and she is Steve and if Steve flirts with her cousin she will puke.
“I’m not going to flirt with your cousin.”
She squints at him. Buck is exactly his type. A nerd. A dweeb. Big eyes and square shoulders perfect for holding. Well… she’s not sure about the shoulders but he’s built a bit like Eddie and Steve sang songs about his shoulders so she’s assuming. Still squinting at Steve she raises her hand and knocks.
Evan “Buck” Buckley opens the door not expecting to see his cousin Robin on the other side with a man. He knew that she was like Hen, and god she cannot wait for Hen and Karen to meet Robin, for Robin to have the community she was denied in Hawkins, so he feels no shame is flashing her friend a smile. Robin gags. And the friend? He blushes looks at Robin in panic and tries to whisper:
“Oh no, he’s hot.”
Buck has always been more into older lovers, but it probably won’t hurt-
“No! Nope. No flirting. No play flirting. I will puke. And I will puke on your shoes. Steven Marie Harrington don’t you dare.”
Steve leans into Robin’s space. Neither agreeing to the terms nor disagreeing. This is going to be fun.

I'm already seeing posts like "Eddie realizes what's wrong with his relationship with Marisol once he sees Buck and Tommy be so happy and perfect on their date, teaching him about what romance actually is." And can I. Can I just call bullshit for a minute. Because these are not serious people fr.
Eddie doesn't need to look at them to know what love is. He was married for almost a decade and at some point he and Shannon loved each other and had fun together. He canonically looks up to Bobby and Athena's relationship as something to aspire to (which is why he always goes to Bobby for relationship advice!!). He's had Hen and Karen in his lives since s2, an actual black lesbian couple who've been happily married for so long, and we know how enchanted Eddie is by them. We've seen him continuously give advice to Chimney about Maddie.
Like!! Eddie does not need to look at those two white men who are on a first date and have some big epiphany!! Especially when those two are only together because one of them quite literally sent Eddie to the hospital! My mistake, though, that's real romance 🙄
NO YOU ARE SO CORRECT. god. literally!!! especially the part where we’re ignoring all of eddie’s relationships outside of buck - AGAIN!
and can i just point out that the likelihood that he’s gonna watch buck and tommy be HAPPY on this date is very, very low? i’m pretty sure that what’s gonna happen is buck will start acting like a weirdo after eddie shows up because he doesn’t want eddie to know he’s on a date with a guy. that’s probably why eddie’s giving him that strange look lmao

Evan Buckley x Eddie Diaz x Reader
Genre: Angst, Fluff
Warnings: mention of car crash, scene in the hospital, arguing with doctors
Synopsis: When Buck realizes he is not just in love with you but also in love with Eddie and admits to having kissed him, will he lose both of you or will he get his happy ever after?
Taglist: @enterprise-medical
Turning around and feeling the cold covers next to him leaves a bitter taste in Buck's mouth as he remembers the previous night. The yelling, the fighting, him saying that you didn't matter to him unlike Chris and Eddie. He regretted it the moment the words left his mouth, because you did matter to him, he was just confused. His feelings towards Eddie had changed over the past few weeks and two nights ago, he had kissed Eddie in a drunken haze.
But that hadn't been the only thing that confused him. He had spoken to Maddie and after her questioning, she suggested that he may be in love with you AND his best friend. When telling Eddie about it, he expected the other to laugh, yet instead the other male just hummed and stated "so just like me".
So now he was waking up to an empty apartment, his head feeling like it was about to explode. Buck missed your scent, your soft voice when you're just waking up, how he brings you coffee while you whine about wanting to stay in bed for just 5 more minutes. His heart clenches at the thought of you placing gentle kisses along his shoulder, your chuckles, your laugh when he told you some weird fact that he read online.
Ever so slowly the day drags on. Eddie doesn't even spare him a second glance at work, only talking to him when it is work related. Even the whole team noticed something was up between the two best friends, though unsure of what it is. Well almost all were unsure, Chimney knew what was going on from Maddie, however, he was sworn to secrecy by his wife and despite not wanting to admit it, she did scare him just a bit. Though he just kept quiet and watched the two males with careful eyes, ready to report everything to Maddie.
Dragging his feet as he enters the apartment, he calls out that he is home, hoping to hear your voice from the kitchen. Instead he is met with deafening silence. A silence he wishes didn't exist, a silence that he hates being the cause of. Dropping his bag on the floor, he sets his keys on the table before falling onto the couch and letting out a loud groan. Just as he is about to doze off, his stomach lets out a loud growl and after debating whether to ignore his hunger or not, Buck decides to order some chinese food.
Once he has eaten, he just stares at the wall for a good 10 minutes before grabbing his keys and rushing to the only person he can think of. A quick 5 minute drive later, he ran 2 red lights but he is distracted, and he is standing in front of Bobby's house. Sure, Athena and Bobby may be having a cute date night, but right now he needs dating advice and who better to get it from than his captain. Taking a deep breath, he finally knocks and waits for Bobby to open the door, who looks rather shocked to see a crying Buck standing outside of the door and quickly ushering him inside.
It takes exactly 1 beer, 6 tissues and Athena's calming words for Buck to open up about what had happened between him, his partner and Eddie. After hearing the entire story, the married couple sits there in shock as Buck is trying to calm down. "So that is why you two were so awkward at work today?" Bobby asks carefully, not wanting to send the younger male into another crying fit. Buck nods, blowing his nose before wiping away the remaining tears with his sleeve.
"Look, I don't know whether you want to hear this or not, but you need to grow a pair and invite them both over to your place, so that you can talk this shit out. It might not end with you three together, but it will give you all some closure. And who knows, maybe it will end with you all three happily dating." Athena states gently, rubbing Buck's back. Somehow the younger male had weaseled his way into her heart and she worried about him, especially when seeing him so heartbroken. But there simply wasn't anything her nor Bobby could do about the situation, they could only give Buck the support that he needed right now.
After his talk with Athena and Bobby, Buck slowly drove home, this time being a lot more careful. Once again, he finds himself laying on his couch, this time staring at his phone as he thinks about sending the message he had typed out, asking you and Eddie to come over the next morning. Taking a deep breath and exhaling slowly, he presses send before shutting off his phone and rushing up to hide under his blankets.
The next morning comes and goes without a single sign of you. Eddie turned up around 9 and even brought some coffee and breakfast, because he figured that Buck wouldn't have eaten yet. Soon enough, it is late afternoon and Buck has checked his phone like a million time, though there was no message or call from you. Now he's pacing back and forth in his kitchen as Eddie tries to calm his nerves. "Hey, mi amado, I'm sure they're just busy and that is why they haven't reached out yet. It will be okay."
Hearing those words help calm Buck's nerve, though he still jumps to pick up the phone when he hears it ring. "Y/N? Is this you?" He asks quickly, only to frown when he hears Maddie deny it. "Buck, listen, I just had a call and normally I wouldn't be allowed to tell you this, but it's about Y/N. They were in a car crash and on their way to the west hospital. They're stable, but I figured that you'd like to visit them." Maddie explains gently, knowing that it would be a rather hard blow for Buck. After all, hearing that your loved one was just delivered to a hospital because of a car crash wasn't an easy pill to swallow. "Thank you, Maddie." Buck mumbles, quickly hanging up so that he can grab his car keys and Eddie's hand, explaining on his way out where they were going.
They didn't know what to expect when they arrive at your room, though certainly not you glaring at the doctors and stating that you're absolutely fine. "You have to let yourself be checked on, mi amor." Eddie says, recovering from the state of shock quicker than Buck did. "And who are you?" The doctor asks the men, raising an eyebrow at the pair. "We are their-" Buck begins, only to be cut off by you saying "my boyfriends. Now as I've been saying, I'm fine, I can leave." You continue arguing with your doctor as the two males stare at you in complete shock and confusion. You just called them your boyfriends, did this mean you like them back? That you were okay with trying a relationship between you three? They share a look before approaching your bedside, Eddie being the first to speak up again. "Listen doctor, I am a trained medic. They'll be staying with me for the night and if there is any sign that they are doing unwell, I will bring them back here immediately, okay?" Sighing, the doctor nods and excuses himself to get the papers for you to be discharged.
Finally, an hour later, all three of you were curled up under a blanket on Buck's couch with you in the middle and the two men holding hands on your lap. A small happy sigh escapes Buck as he watches the two people he loves, thanking the gods above that he was so lucky to be with both of you. Though the moment is quickly ruined, when he miscalculates the distance to his mouth and pours beer all over his chest.

Buddie prompt #3: 9-1-1 & Lone Star crossover idea
I’m putting this idea here for someone to claim if they wish. It was originally posted on Ao3 (now with additions), but deleted it due to ToS. If anyone wants this prompt, please comment below so I can delete it after you copy it to prevent similar stories.
His breaking point was a kiss.
One he knew he wasn't supposed to see. With anyone else he would feel like a voyeur, but all he could feel was a dark emptiness opening in his chest.
With Eddie’s truck being in the shop for a tie rod that had broken while at work, sending Eddie into a storm of cursing in Spanish, Ana had picked him up for their latest date.
And dropped him off.
If was a horrible fluke that Buck had stood up to look out the window at just the wrong moment. He should have been in the spare bedroom asleep after a grueling 24 surrounded by all the things he had brought with him when he moved in all those weeks ago.
Buck makes his excuses to leave while Eddie is completely confused and trying to get him to talk. Eddie tries to call Buck but he doesn't pick up.
Buck goes to see Bobby and Athena. It all spills out, including not feeling wanted by his parents. Bobby thinks Eddie is being an idiot but keeps this to himself. He suggests a leave of absence for mental health. Bobby receives permission from his superior to place Buck on open ended leave after giving him a brief explanation of the situation. Ending with him saying to Bobby, “That poor boy. If I ever meet that boy's parents…”
Bobby answers, “Get in line, but there may not be anything left after Athena gets them first.”
TK is surprised to find a sleeping Buck in his Jeep in the parking lot of the 126. An off duty Carlos takes him back to his place where he crashes on the couch. Buck has a nightmare and Carlos talks him down.
Owen calls Bobby saying he has his boy and they'll take care of them. He has a plan and discusses it with Bobby. The whole absence makes the heart grow fonder concept.
“Is it mutual?”
“I’m not 100% sure, but…”
“You can't tell Eddie. Even if he begs for answers for his son, you need to stand strong. It needs to be him asking for himself. If this goes wrong… We'll take Buck in here. He'll have a home with the 126. It will take a while, but we'll help put him back together as best we can until he's back on his feet. He won't be alone.”
Bobby wipes at his face, “Thank you."
“Let's hope this works.”
Eddie is worried and confused why Buck never came home. His phone is going straight to voicemail. Now he isn't there for his shift. Another man comes in and introduced as Buck's temporary replacement. Eddie asks Bobby where Buck is, but he won't give him a straight answer. Eddie is shocked as Bobby's tone is harsh and he glaring at him. Bobby later apologized and explains that Buck requested that only he and Maddie know where he is. Eddie tries to dig, but Bobby just shakes his head with a, “I'm sorry, Eddie. I can't tell you.”
Eddie asks Maddie, but she just slams the door in his face. Chim doesn’t know as she's refusing to tell them where Buck is. Chim delivers her handwritten apology the next day to Eddie. It states Buck needs space from everything, but mostly leaves out the part about Eddie (only one or two things that hint, but it goes over Eddie's head).
Athena almost breaks down and calls Eddie a fool before storming away to her police cruiser. She doesn't know where he is because Bobby refuses to tell her (which she finds annoying yet commendable), but she was there for the why when Buck broke down. She'll apologize after Buck and Eddie return. Hopefully together.
Filler with Buck and the 126 and Carlos. Judd takes him out on a horse like he did Capt. Strand. Fill a pothole on how Grace and him are so accepting of TK's sexuality despite being religious.
A Facetime therapy session where Copeland assures him its okay to get away for a while.
Eddie doesn't quite realize yet that he's slowly losing it, but the others can tell.
Paul and Buck have a conversation.
Christopher asking where Buck is because it's movie night. Eddie doesn't have an answer.
Eddie rages in the station gym trying to understand. He almost gets it, but he thinks Buck is jealous of Eddie, not Ana. Cue Hen groaning under her breath, "You almost got it, Eddie. Come on. Keep thinking."
TK, Carlos, and Paul take Buck out to a club. TK talks absentmindedly to the bartender, even showing him/her a picture of Eddie from Insta. Word spreads about the "new guy," Buck. Others keep the “creeps" away from Buck. Buck loosens up a little while there.
Buck Facetimes Christopher on Carla's phone, only for Eddie to walk in just as Buck is hanging up. He sees Buck's panicked/sad face right before he hangs up. He tries to call back, but doesn't get an answer. Carla huffs and shakes her head. "Figure it out yourself, hun. I can't give you this answer. You need to find it for yourself." Cue Eddie even more confused. This is all just about Buck's parents and jealous over Ana... Isn't it?
Roller derby to cheer on Marjan with the bartender flirting with Buck, who is all kinds of flustered. Carlos, TK, and the others tease him mercilessly.
A massive fire where Buck offers his help. Paul gives Buck as sidehug in gratitude.
Eddie almost punching the mechanic because his truck still isn't done.
Marjan takes Buck out to do something crazy because she's Firefox. (Buck is still starstruck). Maybe skydiving or they race each other at wall climbing? Cue competitive banter.
Owen keeping Bobby updated on Buck.
Buck eventually asks for a transfer. Owen asks if this is what he really wants. Buck just shrugs and asks helplessly what other option he has.
(Optional: Bucks gets up quietly at night for a glass of water and stumbles onto Carlos and TK having sex/making out in the kitchen. Buck either flees in embarrassment or is stunned into watching with Carlos and TK aware that he's there. All parties awkward and/or embarrassed the next morning until TK bursts into giggles and laughter.)
Eddie's relationship with Ana is rapidly deteriorating. Christopher has a full on tantrum. Eddie has to koala hug him on the floor, after Ana brings him back home from a not very good date as Eddie's thoughts were on Buck. Ana tries to help calm him down but Chris screams at her about Buck not being around as much as soon as she started dating his dad. “I hate you! I hate you!” He yells her to get out. Ana still tries to talk. Carla snaps at her to leave. She still tries.
Eddie is spiraling. Flashback of that kiss he really wasn’t ready for, but Ana had asked. It dawns on him that that was the night Buck disappeared. Why would Buck leave because of that? Chris is repeatedly asking her to leave, but she's not listening. She's not listening to his son. He finally snaps and demands that she leaves. She storms out. Relationship dead in the water.
Carla can only watch as Eddie breaks from it all.
The original plan has failed, so it’s time for the final attempt. A blatant hammer strike to Eddie's head to knock some sense into him.
Bobby calls Eddie into his office. He shows Eddie transfer papers from Buck along with a list of Buck's possessions to be boxed and shipped. Eddie is speechless. Thoughts of Christopher and losing Buck. He's losing Buck.
He shows Eddie an email he received and Eddie slowly scrolls through, It's full of captioned pictures. Such as:
-Buck staring off into the distance on a horse.
-Buck curled on a couch looking lost.
-Buck looking drool-worthy in club clothes. The caption: “Holy sh@t! If I wasn't already happily taken…”
-Showing Buck blushing as someone talks in his ear.
-Smiling yet not reaching his eyes while dancing.
-Sitting with his head buried in his hands on the engine’s bumper.
-Helping man a hose at a large blaze captioned with “Yes, we had permission for him to be there.” Followed by a picture of someone (Paul, but Eddie can’t see his face as he’s looking at the ground and hidden by his helmet) sidehugging a sweaty dusty still geared up Buck around the neck with a hand resting on his head.
A video. It's Buck spilling everything curled up in someone's arms (maybe Carlos or Grace). “Why am I always alone! What about me?” Mentions of Abby and Ali. His failed dates. Everyone pairing up. Losing part of his sister to Chim after finally having her back in his life after so many years apart. “And Eddie! Eddie… Why does love hurt so much?” mentioning Chris. Etc.
Eddie is shaking. It finally clicks why Buck left.
One more video. It's Capt. Strand and the 126 facing the camera. He knows where Buck is now - Austin, Texas.
“Buck doesn't know we're putting all this together. He’s asleep. We may or may not have knocked him out with sleeping pills.”
They all lay it out for Eddie. Eddie feels all kinds of stupid and blind. “Now, you have a choice here, Edmundo Diaz…”
“Why… Oh my god. This entire time… ”
“Do you love him, Eddie? As more than a friend? Or am I signing these papers?”
A few seconds after Eddie runs out of the room, a sigh comes from the speaker phone. “I'll get things set up.”
“Thank you, Owen. For everything.”
“You're welcome.”
The whole firehouse going up in a cheer after Eddie floors out of the parking lot in his thankfully finally fixed truck. Hen is shaking Chim or vice versa.
Carla agrees over the phone to keep Christopher after Eddie blurts everything out to her, ending with a “Go get him, Eddie.”
“Did everyone see this but me?” Carla is laughing as she hangs up.
Buck sees Owen call TK over and whispering in his ear. Tk has an interesting reaction before running out of the room with his phone already to his ear.
Flashbacks as Eddie is scrolling through his pictures on his phone while on an airplane. How he missed it. How he didn't understand himself. His fall had been so slow he hadn't even realized it until it was almost, or maybe is, too late. His seatmate makes a comment on his happy “family," and it’s a kick to Eddie's already flayed emotions.
Judd is there to pick him up at the airport, which surprised him.
He's dropped off at a club. Judd makes a snarky comment after handing Eddie a hotel room key card through the window. Eddie rolls his eyes as Judd drives off laughing. The bouncer, having seen the Diaz blazoned on the back of his LAFD shirt, waves Eddie inside, skipping the line. The whispering starts as soon as he enters. Word had spread and they had been hoping for Buck. “Is that…”
“I think so.”
He's shocked as the crowd starts to part for him. The music lowers in volume. People are staring and he's embarrassed, etc., but he sees Buck, who TK has made sure looks phenomenal. Taking a deep breath, he squares his shoulders and walks forward.
Buck is dancing between Carlos and TK. He feels Carlos start smacking TK on the back before they pull away from him. They’re both grinning so wide he suspects their faces are hurting. TK is not so quietly squealing in excitement.
A hand covers his eyes from behind. He immediately recognizes the body wash smell. “Eddie…”
Mini conversation/argument, neither realizing the club has gone dead silent, with Eddie yelling “Because I love you, you idiot!”
The entire club loses it with TK whooping, jumping with a fist punch, and laughing.
End there with a kiss, at the hotel room which may or may not get steamy, or Buck telling Christopher he's home with Chris tackling him to the ground.

I loved the teams reaction to the Bathena relationship reveal. How do you think Hen first brought up the bet and what were Buck and Chim’s responses? What if Hen HAD set Bathena up vs canon? How would that have gone down?
Your Ask gave me Thoughts so I wrote it as a pseudo-ficlet 😉
-------
It didn't take long after Bobby came to the 118 that Hen saw something there that would be So Good with Athena.
But Athena was married - happily so - and extremely dedicated to her marriage. It could never be anything but a friendship, so Hen got to work making sure that friendship happened.
It started with bringing Athena over to the firehouse - something she never would have considered when Captain Gerard was around. After all, now they had family dinners and Bobby's home cooked meals were definitely better than whatever fast food place Athena might stop at for dinner while on shift. It was the perfect excuse.
Just as she'd hoped, the two formed an immediate bond, although Athena gave Bobby a dirty look when he mentioned the Rooster Incident. Hen figured it was better not to ask for more details.
Soon the fire house became a place that Athena loved to visit and hang out at, but try as she might Hen could never get the two of them to just sit and hang out alone.
They were casual friends, but they didn't seem to see the connection that they COULD have and that was so blindingly obvious to Hen.
And then Michael came out, and Bobby relapsed not long after, and Hen had to watch as both of their worlds fell apart. The connection she saw should have changed - should have shifted - but it didn't. Instead they seemed to be even more perfect for each other. They just couldn't see it.
Eventually, just before the divorce was finalized, Hen brought it up with Athena.
Athena just laughed because "Me and Clark Kent? Hen..." before giving her an incredulous look.
That clinched the deal.
She and Chimney were going to team up and get Bobby and Athena together if it took them a lifetime.
They tried literally everything - even both of them taking them out for drinks at the same restaurant, and Chim was an unexpected no show "Sorry, Bobby... I was thinking we were going out tomorrow" and Hen having to leave ten minutes in because "Karen needs my help with something".
And somehow that didn't work. In retrospect, maybe meeting for drinks was a poor choice because since Bobby didn't drink there was absolutely no reason for him to stick around of Chim wasn't there.
So they try different tactics, including "accidentally" bumping into each other at the movies while taking their BFF to the movies and maneuvering things so that Bobby and Athena ended up sitting together.
But no matter how many things Hen and Chimney try, the two of them just couldn't seem to see the obvious connection, or even the chemistry that seemed to be growing with each "accidental" meeting.
Chim finally suggests that maybe they should stop - it's not like he doesn't enjoy hanging out with Bobby, but he doesn't want to keep pushing something that clearly neither Bobby nor Athena wanted. Hen refuses because "This is a good idea and we're going to keep at it until they realize it's a good idea!"
And then one day Athena comes into the fire house, and suddenly she and Bobby are kissing.
Chimney almost falls out of his chair, and Hen is about ready to burst.
Turns out, they did make a connection on that first "date" over drinks, and were having the time of their lives watching Hen and Chimney keep on trying to set them up.
Plus, it gives Athena the excuse to not actually go public with the relationship until she's ready. It's only when Bobby needs it to stop being half an act and they end up fighting that she realizes she doesn't want to lose him.
Hen and Chim can't decide who owes who money because they definitely succeeded, but did either one of them really win the bet when they both thought they had failed for an embarrassingly lengthy amount of time?

Buddie 317 meta
Tumblr media
The hot air balloon starts us off with a metaphor for emotional turmoil, those times when we feel we have no power, no control over a situation. The very use of a hot air balloon throws us back to Buck’s date with Abby in ep 109 which never came to be. We also get a hint of her when he mentions these only look romantic, but they can actually be really dangerous. Buck doesn’t say it aloud, but it’s clear he learned this fact from Abby. I find it interesting that the person Buck refuses to name her to is Eddie, who already looks a bit suspicious at what Buck said. And hey, the episode is even framed with her: we start with this call which contains a callback to Abby (after we already had reminders of her in 316) and we end it, after what at first seems like a concluding montage, with Abby herself calling 911. So, I feel the hot air balloon call can be seen as a metaphor for Buck’s relationship with her. It looked good on the surface, but it ended up being more dangerous than he realized it would be, wounding him deeply. And specifically, this call, like the whole theme of the ep, is about being without control, which is exactly what happened to Buck at the end with Abby. He desperately wanted to be with her, refused a breakup with her when she wanted to end things because she was about to leave, he was willing to wait for her, overlook her implication she might sleep with other people while away (the “eat, pray, love” reference he mentions to Maddie in 201) and despite all of that, he was powerless to stop that relationship from ending. But in this call, he gets to be the one who jumps into the hot air balloon and land it, bring it back to safety. By the end of 318, hopefully our boy will get the same closure for his relationship with Abby.

Which connects with Bobby and Athena, actually. He had to listen live to his wife possibly getting killed, if that isn’t a parallel to how Buck had to possibly watch Eddie get buried forever in 315, IDK what is. But then when they’re looking for a medic for the rapist, Bobby says, “he can wait”. This reminded me of Buck, willing to let the teenager who tried to kill her own baby wait for another ambulance in 101, which the show presented as the wrong decision, one of those moments when emotions overtake you and cloud your professional duty as a firefighter. Athena was the one to correct Buck, but Athena is badly hurt in 317 and Bobby lets his emotions get to him. My guess is that in 318, we’ll see a somewhat similar decision that Buck will have to make between emotions and professional duty, once more coming full circle.

Oooh, Michael and elevator guy (Dr. Hale according to IMDB) had this lovely little meet cute and I stan! Yes, show! Give the queers all the meet cutes! We saw Mitchell and Thomas’ meeting in 208, we had Justin and Miles in 311, now Michael and the hot doctor and I’m here for it! I just wanted to happily scream about the show giving us these cute moments and together with Hen and Karen, good queer rep. It’s not a given and deserves to be appreciated! (and it does give me hope for eventual canon Buddie...)
* * *
Tumblr media
Small thing, but when Hen is lying to Karen and telling her basically, she couldn’t invite her wife to Chim’s bday celebration, she excuses it by saying she couldn’t because then Chim would invite his significant other, Maddie. Who would invite her brother and it just goes without needing an explanation that Buck would invite Eddie. Then Bobby AND Athena are thrown in for good measure. Everyone other than Buddie is expected in this scenario to invite either family or their romantic partner, not colleagues or friends. Hen automatically assuming (and Karen accepting) that Buck in this case would invite Eddie is closer to how you look at a romantic couple who are in your social circle than how you see two friends. This is basically another instance when the team naturally treat Buddie as if they were together. So how are we expected to view them differently?
* * *
Tumblr media
Speaking of Hen and Karen, this episode treated it somewhat comically, but it brought back what it means to have your trust in your partner broken. That it doesn’t quite go away. And maybe a strong couple can move beyond that, as these two did, but there are always scars left behind, the ability to trust that needs to be healed. It made me think of Buck and how Abby broke his trust in the way she wanted to break things off in 110 and then ghosted him for a long time after that instead of just being clear cut with him. The amazing thing to me is that Buck has rebuilt this trust, he’s been doing that with Eddie. And maybe the fact that they first build this trust as friends and not as possible romantic partners is exactly crucial to Buck’s ability to rebuild that kind of trust with anyone. Since they get to have that trust in each other, sometimes even more than some romantic partners have in each other, they have something that’s truly solid. And now that they have the foundation for it, this friendship can blossom into romance. After all, aren’t the best lovers friends first?

Okay, here it is;
How Light Carries On Endlessly Even After Death
Buddie + Christopher
Warnings: major character death, angst, family feels
——————
Christopher had been at school when Bucky and Eddie got into the crash. Chris was happily doing his work when Carla came into the room with his teacher that had stepped out.
“Chris, sweetheart, could you grab your stuff and go with Carla?” Ms.Flores asks and Chris nods, collecting his papers and school bag. He notices the grim expressions on both his teacher and Carla’s faces. Chris knows that face.
That was the face his dad wore before telling him his mom had died. That was the face his dad wore when he told him his Bucky wouldn’t be around for a bit because of grown up issues.
But this had another darkness to it.
Chris follows Carla out to her car and he sits in his seat like a good kid and watches Carla.
“Carla. What happened?” Chris asks and Carla lets out a sigh.
“Your dad and Bucky got into a car crash, buddy,” Carla says and Chris feels things freeze around him.
“Are they okay?” He asks gently, not sure if he’s ready to hear the answer
“I don’t know, buddy,” Carla replies and looks at him in the rear view mirror. Chris feels no stomach drop to the floor as Carla drives towards the hospital.
They get there and Chris sees the 118 sitting in the waiting room chairs. Hen and Chimney smile at Chris as he crawls into a chair next to May. May gently holds Chris’s hand at his prompting and he feels comforted by the touch.
He sits there and listens to the other people talk, but he doesn’t grasp any of it. He didn’t feel like this when his dad told him about mom. I mean, yeah, he was broken up about it, but he still had his dad in the end and then he gained Bucky, but now at the chance that that could all go away like his mother, makes Chris sick.
Chris thinks back to a few nights ago, probably over two weeks. He was supposed to be sleeping, but woke up parched. He went to get a glass of water when he over heard his dad and Bucky talking.
“Eddie, you don’t want me.”
“Yes, I do, Buck. Why do you think I follow your ass everywhere to make sure you’re safe? Why do you think I’ve introduced you into Christopher’s life so quickly? I’ve never felt this way for anyone, Buck. Something about you and your dumbass just reels me in and I’ve been stuck.”
“Eddie...”
“Don’t ‘Eddie...’ me, Evan Buckley. I want you to be boyfriend, now will you?”
*sniffles* “Yeah. Yeah, I will.”
Christopher had smiled and went back to bed in peace and the next morning, he saw Buck kiss Eddie the next morning in the kitchen and even though Chris was glad they got their heads out of their butts, as his dad would say, it was still gross.
“Bobby Nash?” A nurses asks and that’s when Chris looks up at the nurse. Her and Bobby talk for a bit before Bobby waves to Maddie. She gets up and Chris follows. He wants to see his Bucky.
“Are you going to see Bucky?” Chris asks and Maddie nods, smiling with tears in her eyes.
“Yeah, Chris, you wanna come?” She asks and Chris nods. He follows behind her, Bobby leading the way.
“This must be Christopher, Buck’s son,” the nurse says and Chris smiles proudly. He is Buck’s son and Buck is his dad.
“Like, actual son?” Maddie asks and the nurse nods.
“Yeah, we got papers a couple days ago about the legal adoption when he started dating Mr.Diaz,” she says and Maddie looks to Bobby then at Chris.
“They told me not to tel because they wanted it to be a surprise,” Chris says and he looks into the room. He sees Buck laying in the bed and pushed past his aunt and grandpa. He gets to the side of the bed and crawls into the chair next to his left side.
Chris can see bandages and tubes going into Buck and Chris does what he’s seen his father do whenever he was in the hospital; he holds his hand.

Chris doesn’t know how much time has passed before Carla is running into the room.
“Chris, you need to come with me,” her tone is urgent and it doesn’t sit well with Christopher. He follows Carla down the long hallways until he sees his dad. He’s not looking very good and it makes Chris feel all the worse.
Carla takes him in and sets him on the bed before leaving the room.
“Hey, buddy,” Eddie whispers and Chris smiles.
“Hi, dad,” he replies, but notices that his dad’s eye loss are fluttering. “The team found out about the adopting papers.” Eddie nods with a slight cough.
“I guessed.” Eddie smiles at him and Chris has a sense that something is going to be very wrong here soon.
“Buddy, I want you and Bucky to take care of each other, okay?” Eddie asks and gulps. Chris knows this talk.
“No! Dad are you leaving?!” Chris demands, tears filling his eyes at even the thought. Eddie gives him sad eyes and Chris feels his heart stop. He’s going to lose his dad just like his mom. He starts crying and Eddie pulls Chris into his arms. Chris lays there against Eddie, hearing his breathing and heart beat.
“I love you, kiddo. Take care of yourself and papa for me.”
Within the next few moments, the room becomes awfully quiet as a long beep fills it.
Doctors come and go and Bobby at one point took Chris from the room. He might be screaming crying and by the faces of the other’s, he’s guessing that’s what happening.
The team wants him to go home, but he just wants his Bucky, his papa. He wants the last person who could make him feels better right now.
——————
When Buck does wake up a few hours later, he can feel the small body shaking in his grip.
“Christopher?” Buck asks, voice thick and groggy.
“Papa!” Chris cries as he sits up, looking all over Buck. He can see the man liking him over and his won face darkens too. “Please don’t leave me, papa! Don’t leave like dad did!” Chris cries and Buck pulls Chris closer to him. Chris cries harder then.
“I’m not going anywhere, baby. Papa’s not leaving you,” Buck assures and Chris sniffles loudly, gripping onto Buck’s gown as if that could bring him any closer than he already was.
——————
Eddie’s parents arrived three days after the crash and Eddie’s death. They didn’t look any better than Buck or Chris did.
Social Services arrived the same time they did.
It was pretty quiet when Helena and Ramon walked into Buck’s room. Buck didn’t stop rubbing Chris’ back or kissing his head or assuring him that Buck wasn’t going anywhere.
“Mr. Evan Buckley?” A kind looking woman asks and Chris looks at her. He hopes she doesn’t take him away from Buck. He wants to stay with Buck.
“Yes?” He asks and the woman smiles at him. Then she turns to grandma and grandpa.
“You two must be Helena and Ramon Diaz?” She asks and Chris nods with them. Then she turns to Chris. “Hey, buddy,” her voice is soft and Chris hears the pity in it. She turns to Buck, Helena and Ramon again.
“So, almost a week ago, Mr. Diaz and Mr.Buckley brought in adoption papers for Chris. Buck is technically Christopher’s guardian next in line to take care of him.” Chris smiles at that and buried his face into Buck’s chest. Buck runs his fingers through his hair.
“But shouldn’t he come with us? He clearly can’t be around him mourning, it would affect him too much,” Helena says, “and we don’t know how long it’ll take him to recover enough to take care of him-“
Most of the rest of the conversation is blocked out as Chris ponders the possibility of leaving Buck. He couldn’t. He saw what it did after the tsunami and Chris was taken from Buck. Now losing Eddie? The fallout would be catastrophic.
“No,” Chris whimpers out. The four adults look at him.
“Christopher-“ his grandmother starts, but he shakes his head.
“Papa and I need each other,” he whispers. “I need him.” He feels Buck’s breath stutter in his chest repeatedly and looks up at Buck. He’s crying. Chris reaches a hand up and wipes his tears just like he saw Eddie do multiple times when they didn’t realize he was there.
Buck sniffles.
“We’ll be okay, kid.”
——————
Chris walks up the steps to the house, smiling as he sees the familiar black Jeep parked in the driveway. Carla unlocks the door and leads him into the house.
Chris hasn’t been in this house since a a couple weeks ago. Carla had grabbed some clothes and he showered at Athena and Bobby’s, not yet ready to head back to the place he lived with his dad for nearly three years.
Buck and him were leaving town for a bit, going back to Texas. His dad’s funeral was soon and Chris doesn’t know if he’ll be ready to see his family broken like that.
He walks into the doorway and looks over. There’s a picture on the table by the door. It’s him and Buck. He chuckles gently, smiling at the photo.
He hears a small sob from one of the rooms and goes towards it. Buck’s sitting on their bed, crying gently as he stares at a photo.of them all on Halloween two years ago. Chris sits next to Buck and holds his hand. Buck smiles at Chris, but it doesn’t quiet reach what it used to. And Chris doesn’t expect it too.
He goes to his won room next. He remembers all the mornings he spent getting ready before his dad came into the room to smile at him. He sees all the books they’ve read together, whether just Eddie and Chris, or Eddie, Buck and Chris.
He misses those nights and as he grabs a Harry Potter book, he sits down and looks at the cover. So many nights were spent in this bed, just them.
Chris looks at the different drawings and pictures around the room. He sighs gently as he settles in his twin bed. How the three of them fit never did register to Chris’ mind, just that they fit together well.
——————
The funeral was a mess. A complete and utter mess. Everyone was crying and grieving. He wasn’t expecting anyone other than family here, but when a team of firefighter showed up, the 126, Chris smiles sadly at them.
Judd and Carlos were among the team.
“Papa,” he says and Buck looks at him.
“Yes, buddy?” He asks.
“There’s some of dad’s friends,” Chris points to the odd looking team and Buck smiles.
“You wanna introduce them to me?” He asks and Chris smiles.
“I only know two of them, but yeah, c’mon,” Chris says and leads the way.
“Christopher?” Carlos asks gently.
“Hi, Carlos,” he replies and opens his arms. The older man hugs the small kid, closing his eyes.
“I’m sorry about your dad, kiddo,” Carlos whispers and Chris shrugs softly.
“At least I still have my papa, Buck,” Chris says as they separate. Buck is smiling fondly at them and Carlos extends a hand.
“Hi, I’m Carlos Reyes, I’m a cop for the APD. I was friends with Eddie when he lived here in Texas,” Carlos introduces and Chris smiles.
“Hi, I’m Evan Buckley, but I go by Buck. I am, or was, Eddie’s boyfriend and coworker,” he says and Carlos smiles.
“I’m glad to hear he found love after Shannon,” Carlos say and Buck nods.
“There’s the little man,” a Texas drawl says and Chris turns around. Judd is standing with a few other men and women and Chris smiles. Chris opens his arms to Judd and hugs him close.
“Judd, this is my papa, Buck,” Chris says as he’s put down. Judd smiles warmly at Buck.
“Judd Ryder.”
“Evan Buckley, but you can call me Buck.” Chris smiles at them all.
“He’s my papa,” Chris tells Carlos and Judd again, because he needs them to know even if he told them already.
Judd smiles and claps Buck’s shoulder.
“Welcome to the family, brother. You ever need anything, come to the 126 station in Austin.”
Chris saw the tears welling up in Buck’s eyes as he nodded. Judd hugs him and Chris smiles.
Then they’re calling people to their seats and Chris blocks the rest out as he focuses on his papa.
——————
It’s been about a year since Eddie died. Chris is starting middle school and Buck is right by his side. Him and Buck weren’t in Los Angeles for a few months after his death, mainly staying in Texas before coming back.
Buck moved out of his apartment fully and into their house, the one they shared with Eddie. It was hard, trying to live in a space that they once shared, but Chris was getting through it.
The 118 was constantly checking in on them, making sure they had what they needed. Most night, Buck and Chris slept together in the king size bed that Eddie and Buck slept in most of the time.
Chris isn’t going to lie. This was much harder than losing his mom. Everyday when he wakes, he waits for Eddie to walk into his room, their bed head looking almost similar, but he never does.
For a while there, Buck could barely look at him and Chris doesn’t blame him. Though he looks a lot more like Buck, he still has some of his dad’s defining features.
Now, on his first day of sixth grade, he can imagine Eddie standing next to Buck at his Jeep. They’re both smiling and at that moment he realizes that Eddie has been in his room in the mornings. He just couldn’t see him.
As Chris sits in his new class, he can feel the pride and happiness that radiates off his dad’s. Whether they both were alive, or only one, he knew they both were proud.
And that is Christopher’s sole reason that he continues to get up each morning.
