I've got some thoughts about the Liam to Red Bull 2025 after I have some time to think about it.
I would like to preface I don't hate Liam at all and all of the below is my opinion 😊
I want to know what Red Bulls thought process is. Like what made them decide Liam over Yuki.
Liam has had 11 starts in F1 vs Yuki's 87 starts
This season Yuki has out qualified Liam in every race (yuki has also out performed previous teammates Daniel and Nyck)
I think Liam needs a full year in the RB because look what happened to Alex and Pierre. They were put in the Red Bull too soon and got dropped mid season. Granted you could argue they're in a better place now.
To sum up its far too early for Liam and Yuki deserves better than how he's treated over at Red Bull #freeyuki
#praying yuki goes to Aston Martin or something in 2026#but what does yuki have to do to get that seat?#he could win 5 grand prix's and still be not chosen#yuki tsunoda#liam lawson#f1#red bull#visa cashapp rb

HI! Love your blog a lot!!💛❤️
I have a peculiar rant to make!
There are many motorsport events happening in Barcelona during the year, and they are often called "Spanish Grand Prix", and they are portrayed as the "home races" of people usually from other parts of Spain (most times these people are rich blokes from Madrid with links to Vox). I'm not Catalan, but that makes me so mad. It's once again the erasure of an entire history and culture. English-speaking media don't even make an effort to understand where they are, they are just happy to call it Spain and wonder why they're playing two anthems before the actual races.
But anyway, visca Catalunya i bona diada dels Països Catalans!
Thank you very much!
Yes, I completely agree with you that it's annoying. It's a way for the Spanish state (and every other state, because this happens to other occupied nations as well) to use the sports for propaganda and to cement the association "Catalonia=Spain" in the minds of everyone from around the world who's watching.
If I may, I will answer to your rant with another rant of my own. In general, most sports tend to be very state-centered. For example, for most sports you can't be a professional athlete unless you sign up for a specific state to represent it, wear its flag on your clothes while you compete, play their anthem if you win, the teams must be organized according to people who come from the same state, etc. And if you don't have one, then, bad luck, you either do it for the state that occupies your homeland or you don't get to become a professional sportsperson at all. But even if you have your own independent country that you identify with, still... why so much focus on it? Why is where these people come from so important that it becomes even more important that the person? Imagine if people did this with any other aspect of the athlete's background or identities: "Twilight fans won 5 gold medals this year, and Marvel fans went down to only 3". Or imagine if we did it by sexual orientation, conservatives would be so mad saying "why do you have to wave it in everyone's faces!?". All of those would be ridiculous, so why isn't this strong focus on what state they come from also ridiculous? It would seem more logical to focus on person, school/trainer, or teams that they could choose according to how they view the sport or how they think training works better or work better together. But we seem to just accept that the state (not even culture or nation, just a geographical-political administration unit) is the most defining trait.
That's why I personally never liked the Olympic games or world cups, it feels like it's more about nationalism than about sports. I used to follow them when I was young but I always felt like the gymnasts themselves weren't recognized enough because all the media was focused on "how many people from our country won", or "this sport was won by [country]". And Spanish media does this a lot, to the point that I think they are disrespectful to the sportsperson. Why do all Spanish people have to feel proud or like they won the games because someone from their state achieved something, but not when someone from another state did the same, even when someone from a state might be geographically closer to some parts of their neighbour state than other parts of their own? It's not like the random citizen who is supposed to feel like he himself won the games did, maybe he spent the whole competition eating chips at the sofa (that's me btw). It just never made sense to me. And even less for team achievements like F1 or MotoGP, where they play the anthem of the state that the pilot is a citizen of, but so much of that victory is owed to the rest of the team who worked on making and improving the car/motorbike, so it's a team effort but the anthem of the state of only one of them is chosen to be given the victory to. It makes no sense!
And if you're hosting on a city, it's the same. What does a state's anthem even have to do with an F1 racing? Why is it even there? Show the city and the area around it if you must show something, after all that's the people whose taxes are going to pay for that sport and whose lives are going to be inconvenienced by it.
Because that's another thing, events like the F1 race inside Barcelona (not on the actual track, when they made them fake-race on the street Passeig de Gràcia, afaik they were not even actually racing because the velocity limit was too low), the America Cup, etc contribute so much to worsening the worst problems of the city (touristic massification, gentrification, poverty, and pollution). For the America Cup, the neighbours of the Barceloneta quarter have to use cards that identify them as residents to be allowed in their own neighbourhood because that whole neighbourhood has been kidnapped by the America Cup people. And the F1 fake race thing in one of the busiest avenues of the city was very annoying to the citizens, too. It meant cutting a significant amount of the city's traffic, including public buses, and collapsing part of the metro system as a result. Some of my co-workers had difficulties arriving to our workplace that day because of it. Just so that cars can show off inside the city and pollute it, skipping the city's laws that aim to reduce air pollution by banning people whose cars pollute more than a certain amount (which in practise means old cars, the ones that poorer people are more likely to have). We can't use our cars in the city unless we can afford a green model, but they can cut off a whole avenue in the very centre of the city, asphalt it new just for them, and race there when they already have a track made for them to race in.
It's all part of the capitalist obsession with uncontrolled growth, they want everything to happen here for more and more people to come. Not just with sports events, but anything that will be used as an advertising for the city. Like the Louis Vuitton catwalk that was happening this month in Park Güell (a UNESCO World Heritage Site btw) and which damaged part of the architecture. Until now, the hotel lobby was the main promoter of many of these events because they wanted more tourists, but even the hotel owners are now saying that this has gone too far and the tourism monoculture model has become absolutely unsustainable and is ruining the city.
Don't get me wrong, sports are important and we need to support them and promote people practise sports, and it's good for entertainment purposes and we have to support people having fun (that's what life's about!). But the model that professional competitive sports use needs to be completely rethinked. I think every city that has gone through the devastating experience of hosting Olympic Games will agree with this.
Anyway, that's just my opinion and what you pointed out is definitely more offensive, but when I stop to think of it I can't but see how it's all.... not great. Sorry for getting out of topic but I have been personally very annoyed by these sports and fashion events this month.
Thank you for your message and your understanding, I read it on the Sant Joan but I'm answering late. I hope you had a good diada dels Països Catalans and that you're having a great beginning of summer 🌞
#i work in heritage sites education and some of my coworkers are the people who do outreach activities in Park Güell and the damage that#LV did to the Gaudí architecture is only a small part of what they've been doing and how the LV catwalk has meant barring people from#visiting the place and people from the neighbourhood of walking around it#so I have personally been annoyed by this topic so much the last month. you'll have to excuse my rant too lol#ask#esports#sports#f1#spanish grand prix

1. IS IT BECAUSE I AM A GIRL?
Too Few Women in Audio
My work to date has been weighted more towards working with people in a therapeutic way rather than music technology. I have a ”Freelance portfolio career” which loosely translated means juggling different projects simultaneously to pay the rent. Most of which have been in community music and theatre. The work consists of, performance, commissions for music for immersive site specific theatre and directing community choirs.
My rationale for choosing to study Creative Music Production is to develop the technical skills be able to produce my own music to an industry standard. (whatever that means) To to accurately translate compositional ideas and in turn do justice to them. Despite having used Logic as my preferred DAW for over twelve years, I still feel like I have only just dipped my toe into the program, and its capabilities. I enjoy working in my own small home studio and the security it provides. I am currently confronting my feelings of overwhelm with the studio desk at the University.
During my experience of music technology education over the last 16 years, women have definitely been in the minority. Reflecting on my own feelings embarking on Masters study, I really notice how a lack of self confidence rises within me particularly around technology.
For years I have been more interested in the process of composition rather than mixing and production. Preferring to leave this to other more technically skilled people. This has often resulted in being unsatisfied with the end result.
I thought that being able to speak the language of the studio and understanding what things did would help in communicating ideas about the mix. While this certainly helps, I have come to the conclusion that there is no substitute for learning to do this my self. Having to overcome this reluctance was something I wanted to investigate. Why the reluctance? What is the difficulty? Surely it's not because I am a girl?
fig 1: Leslie Gaston-Bird
I began to look at texts about women in the music industry and in particular production and engineering. My interest was piqued when looking into gender within the music industry as a whole and examining the technical roles of women. Exploring this opens a whole world of historical, sociological, systemic, and complex reasons as to why this has been the case and remains present today.
Women in Early Audio
Fig 2: Ada Lovelace 1840
Ada’s place in history was not only for her outstanding work but also assisted by her lineage. Her Father being Lord Byron, the famous poet and politician and her Mother, Annabella Milbanke, ensuring that she was tutored in Mathematics, logic and science. She worked alongside Charles Babbage who was developing a machine called the “Analytical Engine.” James Essinger in his book “Ada’s Algorithm” says that “With her definition of the word “operation,” she is giving birth to the science of computing and computer programming and is in fact now regarded to be the inventor of computer programming. (Gaston Bird 2020)
In relation to music Ada wrote, “Supposing, for instance, that the fundamental relations of pitched sounds in the science of harmony and of musical composition were susceptible of such expression and adaptations, the engine might compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music of any degree of complexity or extent” (Essinger, 2014).
Sophie Germain a French Mathematician. Answering an “open call” call in 1808 from the Academy of Science for Mathematicians, (A place where girls were not allowed to study) to build on the work of Ernest Chladni. He had described the resonant frequencies of vibration with the patterns made from sand on a metal plate. Germain’s work was to develop the formulae to mathematically predict what the resonances would be. This was not acknowledged at the time. Even when she had won the grand prize at the Institute of Science in France (on her third attempt.) She was not invited to the Grand Prix ceremony and not allowed to publish her work. She self-published in 1821.
Fig 3: Patterns of sand on a metal plate with the vibration from a violin bow
Historically Women’s achievements in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) have been hampered by not being able to access this type of education. Those that have broken through are have been uncredited and their work not recognised, or excluded. Sophie Germain's formula was used in architecture to measure that stresses on metal. This contributed to the building of the Eiffel Tower. “However, you will not find Germain’s name on any of the four sides of the Tower, which was built between 1887 and 1889 and upon which are inscribed the names of 72 scientists who contributed their intellect to its construction.” (Mozans 1913)
Woman were actively excluded from education and professions deemed (by men) to be unfit for Women. Today, the door is not so blatantly closed as it was for Sophie Germain back in 1802.
Perhaps more subtle barriers are at play? Audio Engineering is a profession open to all genders, yet we never hear the term “Male audio engineer.” When women in the same profession, they are described with her gender as the prefix.
“Gender-based designations such as these have been the case throughout history; perhaps more so in science, technology, engineering, and math, where women are underrepresented. In contemporary discussions in the media, we hear the phrases “women in medicine” or “women in physics.”(Gaston-Bird 2020)
The ratio of male to female producers is estimated to be 47-1 (Smith et al 2020)
The question of why this might be continues to be asked. Singer songwriter and producer Rosina Ncube says that her experience at school could be described as “character building”, being the only female in the music technology class. Not being chosen to collaborate in group work, and having to speak louder to be heard. She also recollects, being crowded away from the mixing desk whenever there was a demonstration. “Suggesting an idea, having it rejected, then when a guy suggests exactly the same thing 20 minutes later, everyone loves it. Frustrating? You bet, and it's just one in a string of similar experiences that I have had as a woman starting out in the world of music production.” (Ncube R 2013)
fig 4: Rosina Ncube
The comedy sketch from the “Fast Show”posted beautifully illustrates what Rosina Ncube was saying. See fig 9 below
In 2004 I accidentally discovered Imogen Heap when she was playing solo supporting Rufus Wainwright. This was inspiring and influential to me to have a female role model using tech and playing live. She wrote, recorded and engineered her music. Winning a Grammy for best Engineered non classical album in 2009. What is it that young women and girls need to be encouraged into audio? Female role models to aspire to? Women teaching and leading workshops in music technology in schools and colleges? Programs specifically for girls and women? I began to look at how these questions are being addressed.
Organisations across the world have developed specifically to encourage women into the industry. The Yorkshire Sound Women Network is one of these, founded in 2015 by Dr Liz Dobson.
“We have to be in an environment which is lower risk, which – in this case – means not being the only woman in a world which associates masculinity and technology; to remove that risk to be in a community of peers; and to have a chance to put your hands on and use equipment. To make mistakes and learn from that” (Dobson 2019).

fig 6 Yorkshire Sound Women Network Workshop Video
Thoughts and Musings:
Digging in to gender disparity has the potential to enrage, dishearten and become a cul-de-sac that could distract from my main objective of being better at production! Heartening though, are initiatives like the YSWN. Watching the video and seeing the excitement and enthusiasm of the girls taking part in the workshop was an absolute joy. It seems that throughout my studies gender and audio are intrinsically entwined. This topic once explored, impossible to ignore and yet I’d like to be able to ignore it and get on with being a creative music producer. Much like Leslie Gaston Bird would rather just be called an audio engineer, but that’s not how she is represented.
“I am not a woman in audio. I am an audio engineer. Nor am I a “Black woman audio engineer.” I am an audio engineer who happens to be a Black woman.” (Gaston-Bird 2019)

Get to Know: The Pairs Figure Skating Field of the 2018 Winter Olympics
With the conclusion of the Team Event, skaters will now gear up for the pressure cooker of the main Olympic spectacle, starting off with the pairs’ individual event! Here’s a (slightly belated) overview of some of the top competitors in an excitingly packed field. Information on how to watch the Olympics is available here.
Of the two disciplines of figure skating that involve teams of two partners, pairs skating is the more terrifying one to watch for casual (and, indeed, long-time) viewers - not only do pair skaters jump and spin like singles skaters, the women are also lifted or thrown several feet in the air, all without wearing any protective gear. Pair teams must master a variety of elements, including synchronized jumps and spins, throw jumps, twists, lifts, and death spirals, all while maintaining unity as a team and expressing the emotion of their music. Although one top team, Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov of Russia - reigning Olympic silver medalists from Sochi - were not invited by the IOC to participate in the Pyeongchang Games, the pairs field is still the strongest that it’s been in years. The competition at the top is so close that no team can afford to make mistakes if they hope to come away with a medal, or the Olympic title itself.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
WENJING SUI / CONG HAN
Representing: China
Ages: 22/25
ISU Personal bests: SP 81.23, FS 155.10, total 234.53
ISU Season’s best: 234.53
Notable titles: 2017 World Champions, 2015 & 2016 World Silver Medalists, 4-time Four Continents Champions, 2017 Grand Prix Final Silver Medalists, 2-time Grand Prix Final Bronze Medalists
Programs: SP - Hallelujah; FS - Turandot
Known for: Throw jumps, quad twist, emotional connection, interesting transitions, first team to perform both a quad twist and quad throw in a free skate, breaking the world record free skate score at 2017 NHK Trophy
BIO: The longest-lived partnership in the current field, Sui and Han teamed up as children in 2007 and have been skating together for 11 years. Scions of the latest dynasty of Chinese pair skating excellence, they dominated the junior ranks for 3 seasons, winning 3 Junior World titles in a row. However, their career has been a rollercoaster of health struggles - diagnosed with a bone injury in 2012, Wenjing missed most of the 2012-13 season, and the pair failed to qualify for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Although devastated by their loss, Sui and Han used disappointment as fuel to emerge as one of the top teams of the past Olympic cycle, winning silver medals at the World Championships in 2015 and 2016. Throughout all their success, Wenjing continued to suffer from chronic ligament injuries in both feet. In May 2016, she was forced to undergo surgery to repair the extensive ligament damage. A long, painful rehabilitation process followed, where it was unclear if Wenjing would be able to skate again. Sui and Han made their competitive return at the 2017 Four Continents Championships, winning their fourth title. A month later, with a suave short program to “Blues for Klook” and a moving free skate to “Bridge Over Troubled Water” - a program that told the story of their journey together - Sui and Han claimed their first World title, becoming the first Chinese team to win a World title in 7 years.
This season, Sui and Han have chosen the opera Turandot as their free skate, inspired by the legendary performances of their coaches (2010 Olympic Champions Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao) more than 15 years ago. At the 2017 NHK Trophy, they broke the world record free skate score with a clean performance. However, a fall on their side-by-side jumps in the short program at the Grand Prix Final put Sui/Han in second place behind their closest rivals, Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot of Germany.
Sui/Han’s long partnership shows in the ease and harmony of their skating. The team is also known for their technical elements, especially their huge throw jumps, which often earn near-perfect Grades of Execution from the judges. They are the first team to perform both a quad twist and quad throw in a free skate, a feat they accomplished at the 2016 Four Continents Championships, but they have not attempted the throw quad salchow in competition since Wenjing’s return from surgery. Front-runners for the Olympic title along with Savchenko/Massot, Sui/Han must land their jumps cleanly and gain the maximum possible levels on their other elements in order to win. The side-by-side jumps are their biggest weakness, and may ultimately determine their placement in Pyeongchang. It will also be crucial for the team to manage their nerves in their first Olympic appearance.
OFF-ICE: Wenjing enjoys watching the anime Natsume’s Book of Friends. She started skating after she met a skating coach living above her grandmother’s car wash. Cong was scouted for skating when he was in kindergarten. He once bought Wenjing a ukelele because she thought it was pretty. Sui/Han have a close relationship and tease each other mercilessly in interviews. (Wenjing describes Cong as a spider, and Cong describes Wenjing as Tigger from Winnie the Pooh.) Wenjing is nicknamed the “Empress” by fans for her charisma on the ice.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
ALIONA SAVCHENKO / BRUNO MASSOT
Representing: Germany
Ages: 34/29
ISU Personal bests: SP 79.84, FS 157.25, total 236.68
ISU Season’s best: 236.68
Notable titles: 2017 World Silver Medalists, 2016 World Bronze Medalists, 2017 Grand Prix Final Champions, 2016 & 2017 European Silver Medalists
Programs: SP - That Man; FS - La terre vue du ciel
Known for: Triple twist, lifts, interesting choreography and transitions, holders of the current world record in the free skate, Aliona’s expressiveness
BIO: The oldest female pairs skater in the current field, Aliona has seen it all. With former partner Robin Szolkowy, she was a 5-time World Champion and 2-time Olympic bronze medalist. Following Robin’s retirement after the 2013-14 Olympic season, Aliona refused to give up her dream of Olympic gold and teamed up with Bruno Massot, who previously skated for France. Savchenko/Massot debuted internationally in the 2015-16 season and immediately climbed to the top of the pairs field, winning bronze at their first World Championships in 2016, and silver at the 2017 World Championships, two points behind Sui/Han of China. Their biggest breakthrough came this season at the 2017 Grand Prix Final, where they set a new world record in the free skate and won the title over Sui/Han, establishing themselves as serious contenders for the Olympic title.
Savchenko/Massot’s greatest strengths are their lifts and enormous triple twist, which often receives straight +3 GOEs from the judges. But in order to win the Olympics, they will need to be as clean as possible on their side-by-side and throw jumps. The team has attempted the risky throw triple axel in competition before, but they likely will not include it in their programs at the Olympics. Now heading into her fifth Olympics, Aliona has the confidence of experience on her side, while Bruno is experiencing the Olympics for the first time in his career. They placed 3rd in the Team Event short program after a fall on a throw jump, but at their best, they are capable of record-breaking scores. If they win the Olympics in Pyeongchang, they will be the first German pairs team to do so since 1952.
OFF-ICE: Aliona often designs the team’s costumes. Bruno passed the German citizenship test this season on his third try, allowing him to compete at the Olympics with Aliona.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
EVGENIA TARASOVA / VLADIMIR MOROZOV
Representing: Olympic Athletes from Russia
Ages: 23/25
ISU Personal bests: SP 80.92, FS 151.23, total 227.58
ISU Season’s best: 224.25
Notable titles: 2017 World Bronze Medalists, 2017 & 2018 European Champions, 2016 Grand Prix Final Champions, 2018 Russian National Champions
Programs: SP - Piano Concerto No.2 (Rachmaninoff); FS - Candyman
Known for: Twists, throw jumps
BIO: Competing together since juniors, Tarasova/Morozov had a breakthrough season in 2016-17, winning the Grand Prix Final, European Championships, and bronze medals at the 2017 World Championships. The team is known for their solid technical elements, especially their triple twist, and they also include the quad twist in their free skate. In the last season and a half, Tarasova/Morozov have set themselves up as Russia’s leading pairs team and the latest in a long line of champions from that country. Russian and Soviet pair teams have won the majority of Olympic titles in the sport’s history.
This season has been a bit of a bumpy road for the Tarasova/Morozov, who started off strong at Rostelecom Cup, but made multiple errors to finish off the podium at the Grand Prix Final. Nevertheless, they won the 2018 Russian National Championships and 2018 European Championships, and got their first Olympics off to a great start with a winning short program in the Team Event. If Sui/Han or Savchenko/Massot make mistakes, Tarasova/Morozov could sneak into the top 2 spots in the pairs’ individual event, but as it stands, they are a solid contender for the bronze medal.
OFF-ICE: Tarasova/Morozov are in a relationship with each other off-ice.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
MEAGAN DUHAMEL / ERIC RADFORD
Representing: Canada
Ages: 32/33
ISU Personal bests: SP 78.39, FS 153.81, total 231.99
ISU Season’s best: 222.22
Notable titles: 2015 & 2016 World Champions, 2-time World Bronze Medalists, 2-time Four Continents Champions, 2014 Grand Prix Final Champions, 7-time Canadian National Champions
Programs: SP - With or Without You; FS - Hometown Glory
Known for: Side-by-side triple lutzes, throw quad salchow
BIO: One of the veteran teams of this field, Duhamel/Radford teamed up in 2010 and steadily rose through the international ranks, medaling at the World Championships four times, including gold medals in 2015 and 2016. Struggles with injuries in the last year or so have resulted in uneven performances, but the team seems to be hitting their stride as they enter their second - and last - Olympics together. Duhamel/Radford’s strength lies in their high base values; although the quality of their execution is not as high as some other teams, they are one of very few pairs teams capable of performing side-by-side triple lutzes, and they have landed the throw quadruple salchow in competition many times. Strong performances in both segments of the Olympic Team Event helped Team Canada to a gold medal, and Duhamel/Radford will be looking to repeat those performances for a spot on the individual podium as well. As with Tarasova/Morozov, Duhamel/Radford are capable of sneaking into the gold or silver position, but a bronze medal battle with the Russian team is probably the most likely scenario. That said - never try to predict anything in skating, especially in a field as stacked as this one.
OFF-ICE: Meagan is a vegan. She is married to her coach, Bruno Marcotte. Eric is openly gay; in June 2017, he became engaged to his boyfriend, Spanish ice dancer Luis Fenero. With Canada’s gold medal in the Pyeongchang Olympic Team Event, Eric became the first openly gay Winter Olympic Champion. Eric is a musician and composer; he composed the 2016-17 free skate music of fellow Canadian skater Patrick Chan.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
VANESSA JAMES / MORGAN CIPRES
Representing: France
Ages: 30/26
ISU Personal bests: SP 75.72, FS 146.87, total 222.59
ISU Season’s best: 214.37
Notable titles: 2017 European Bronze Medalists, 6-time French National Champions
Programs: SP - Make It Rain; FS - The Sound of Silence
Known for: Emotional connection, interesting transitions, being hot
BIO: James/Cipres are the living definition of late bloomers. Since teaming up in 2010, the team showed potential but lacked consistency and harder technical elements until last season, when all their hard work under a new coach came to fruition with a bronze medal at the 2017 European Championships. They became the first French pairs to medal at Europeans in 14 years. This season, James/Cipres started off strong with a stellar Grand Prix run, just barely missing out on the Grand Prix Final. They won the short program at the 2018 European Championships, but mistakes in the free skate kept them off the podium by a fraction of a point.
Known for their sizzling chemistry, modern style, and Vanessa’s pantsuits, James/Cipres have the full package when they’re on. They have attempted the throw quadruple salchow many times in competition, although they have not yet landed it cleanly. Heading into their second and last Olympic Games together, James/Cipres decided to return to their intense “Sound of Silence” free skate from the 2016-17 season. They placed 6th in the Team Event after a costly mistake on the side-by-side jumps, but if clean, they have the potential for top 5 in the individual event.
OFF-ICE: Vanessa was born in Canada and competed for the USA and UK before moving to France.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
XIAOYU YU / HAO ZHANG
Representing: China
Ages: 22/33
ISU Personal bests: SP 75.34, FS 145.53, total 219.20
ISU Season’s best: 219.20
Notable titles: 2016 Grand Prix Final Silver Medalists, 2017 Asian Winter Games Champions
Programs: SP - Swan Lake; FS - Star Wars
Known for: Twists, throw jumps, Xiaoyu’s elegance
BIO: Both Yu and Zhang have had successful previous partnerships, but after a relatively disappointing outing for Chinese pairs at the 2016 World Championships, coach Hongbo Zhao decided to pair Xiaoyu Yu with Hao Zhang, despite her reservations. Nevertheless, Yu/Zhang competed together for the first time in the 2016-17 season and achieved some significant results, including silver at the 2016 Grand Prix Final and 4th place at 2017 Worlds. This season, they set personal best scores at 2017 Skate America and qualified for their second Grand Prix Final together, where they placed 6th.
Yu/Zhang’s strong points are Xiaoyu’s grace and elegance, as well as their technical elements, especially their triple twist. Their main weakness is their side-by-side jumps; Xiaoyu often struggles with them in competition. Yu/Zhang have the potential for a top-5 finish in the Olympic individual event, but it will depend heavily on the cleanness of their elements. Hao Zhang, the 2006 Olympic silver medalist with first partner Dan Zhang, is now heading into his 4th Olympics with his third partner, while Xiaoyu is experiencing the Olympics for the first time.
OFF-ICE: Xiaoyu is fluent in Japanese, having taught herself the language by watching anime. She has given interviews in Japanese with the Japanese media and translated for her teammates.

Grand Prix of Britain Review
It may have been a dominant win for the rider who is excelling in 2021, but behind him, the podium was filled with feel good stories of riders coming back from difficult periods of their careers!
It was the race that most of the pack feared, as Quartararo set a relentless pace up front, which no one could match, which allowed him to cruise to another win, and extend his title lead. This track is perfectly suited to his smooth riding style, with long sweeping corners, and no majorly long straights. He never allowed himself to get flustered at the start, as he was pushed back in the field, instead he was methodical, and it paid off for him. Aside from Quartararo’s garage, it is chaos in Yamaha, with riders retiring, quitting, or being injured. This mix up leaves us in the situation, where the winners’ teammates were holding up the last places in the finishing order. You cannot blame Crutchlow and Dixon much for this, as they are getting used to the bike still, especially Jake who performed very well in his first weekend on the bike. Rossi too was actually going very well in the race to begin with; however, he overused his tyres, and fell back as a result.
Suzuki will be satisfied with another podium, showing their upturn in pace since the summer break. They may have hoped it was Mir, for the sake of the championship, yet Rins needed this race, and will make him feel more secure in his seat going forwards. Mir could have been right with his teammate, but I think the choice to go on Soft’s was what cost him, as he dropped back in the latter stages of the race, which is normally where he comes on strong. Moving to 2nd in the championship is little consolation for him, as he drops further behind Fabio! Aragon and Misano will be prime opportunities for him to bounce back.
This has been a huge weekend for Aprilia, as they have achieved their first podium in the MotoGP era of the sport. The team has been knocking on the door all year with Aleix, but in this race he looked on another level compared to previously. The track layout really plays to their strengths, so don’t expect this to be a consistent feature of the rest of the year. With the announcement of Vinales joining the team, and possibly racing later this year with them, everything is on the up for the Italian marque.
It was always going to be a tough weekend for Ducati, on a track which rewards corner speed in Silverstone. Miller nearly beat Aleix to 3rd, which would have been a stellar result, but he couldn’t overhaul him on the last lap. If Bagnaia had chosen the medium rear tyre, and Martin had not been crashed into, it could have been even better. This weekend has really shown the importance of getting points on Fabio at Austria, which they weren’t really able to do. Zarco has fallen under the radar recently, with a spate of poor results. He was looking so consistent to start the year, and was threatening Quartararo, but something has happened after the summer break, to dampen his effort.
KTM were nowhere all weekend, possibly due to their tyre struggles once again. Olivera’s weekend especially was not what we had expected from him, considering he is a winner this year. Yet again though, Binder was able to pull another late race charge though the field, to finish in the top 6. He continues to do miracles on that bike. I hope that the new singings for next year at Tech 3 help to boost the team forwards, as they have stagnated at the moment.
5th might be disappointing for Pol, who started from pole. Early on in the race it was going well, but when the heat got turned up in the mid to late stages, he just couldn’t hold on. Despite this it has been a solid weekend for him, as finishing top Honda is something to be pleased about. Much like Binder, Alex Marquez was also coming through the field at a rate of knots. A corner has clearly been turned for him, following a horrific start to the year. Marquez did not cover himself in glory, as he made an aggressive move on Martin, possibly in retaliation for an early move. This took them both down, on a weekend which had plenty of potential for both riders.
Aragon is up next, a track which didn’t suit Yamaha last year at all, however I wouldn’t count out the new, stronger team they have this year just yet. Can Nakagami get over the heart ache he had here last year? Or can Suzuki win again, to take the fight to Yamaha?

Austrian GP: Leclerc, Norris & 'silly season' talk - all you need to know before the race

Austrian GP: Leclerc, Norris & 'silly season' talk - all you need to know before the race
Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix starts at 14:10 BST. Follow all the build-up and action with the BBC both online and on Radio 5 Live, starting with our live page from 12:30
For those who may be tiring of Mercedes’ domination of Formula 1 this year, the Austrian Grand Prix will come as welcome relief.
The world champions have been struggling a little all weekend – it’s all relative, of course; Lewis Hamilton still qualified second – and three cars from three different teams start in the top three places on the grid.
That is, as Hamilton said, “cool”, especially with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, arguably the two most exciting members of F1’s new generation, starting on the front row.
Verstappen was bumped up to second, alongside Leclerc, after Hamilton was given a three-place grid penalty for impeding Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen in first qualifying, which drops him to fourth, for arcane reasons we don’t need to go into here.
That will make Hamilton’s life considerably more difficult as he seeks a seventh win in nine races – and Mercedes’ as they look for a ninth in a row.
For everyone else, it simply adds to the promise of what could be the closest and most competitive race of the season so far.
Hamilton held his hands up for the penalty once it was announced, and it was clear from the way he talked before the investigation that he expected it was coming.
“I’m excited to get out there and race with these guys; they’re both so talented,” he said, before adding: “If I get to start the race with those guys, I think it will be quite a fun race.”
Indeed. Leclerc versus Verstappen versus Hamilton versus his team-mate Valtteri Bottas. Finally, nine races into the season, F1 has the battle everyone wanted to see before it started.
Leclerc on pole as Hamilton demoted
Relive the qualifying hour at the Red Bull Ring
Leclerc on a roll – but have Ferrari messed up?
Ferrari have looked strong all weekend with Leclerc their main contender. His team-mate Sebastian Vettel was generally a couple of tenths behind the 21-year-old run-for-run, even before a problem with an engine air line forced the German out of final qualifying and consigned him to ninth on the grid.
Ferrari’s competitiveness in Austria is down to their prodigious straight-line speed, a combination of the most powerful engine in F1 and a slippery car. Hamilton lost 0.3secs to Leclerc on the straights, Bottas 0.6secs; the difference accounted for by Hamilton getting a tow.
But they have also stepped up their cornering performance this weekend, with some aerodynamic revisions in the nose area to add to a new front wing introduced at the previous race in France.
On top of that, Leclerc looks like he might have turned a bit of a corner in terms of his personal performance in the last couple of races.
He has been quick all season, and should have won in Bahrain in March but for an engine problem that dropped him behind the Mercedes in the closing laps. After that, he was a little error-prone in qualifying. But he looked at that, and changes to his approach in France look to have moved him forward.
“I’ve changed a little bit the approach from Paul Ricard and I really felt I did a step forward,” Leclerc said. “Austria is also my favourite track, so it might fit a little bit better to my driving style but overall, I think, since Paul Ricard, I did a step forward.”
If Leclerc could convert this pole into a win, it would be a popular victory. Everyone recognises his talent and potential, and many felt for him not only in Bahrain, where victory slipped through his fingers, but also in Baku, where he again looked the form man, only to crash away his chances in qualifying.
Leclerc was fastest in both second and final practice before delivering his second pole of the season
But while the Ferrari is the fastest car this weekend, and has a significant advantage on the straights, this race is a long way from a foregone conclusion.
Ferrari have chosen a different tyre strategy from Mercedes and Red Bull, and Leclerc will start on the soft tyre while Verstappen, Bottas and Hamilton are on the medium.
Leclerc said he was happy with the strategy, but Mercedes feel it’s a mistake.
“If we’re on a different tyre, maybe we will be able to offset each other [on pit-stop timing],” Hamilton said. “Them starting on that tyre would tend to think they are going for a two-stop most likely, unless that tyre goes a lot further than we anticipate. I don’t have the numbers but on the medium tyre hopefully we will able to go longer. It will be interesting.”
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was even more clear-cut about it.
“Charles starting on the soft is a risky strategy,” he said, “because it is either a two-stop if things go bad or you’re being very compromised towards the end of your first stint. Whereas Red Bull and Mercedes on the medium are in a better place in terms of the strategies available to us. In summary, I’d rather be on the medium than the soft.”
If it turns out Ferrari have made a strategy error, it would not be the first time. But on the other hand, these things are often made into bigger things pre-race than they turn out to be during it.
Either way, it simply adds to the intrigue.
‘Silly season’ – and talk of Verstappen at Mercedes
It’s mid-summer, so it’s no surprise that F1’s traditional driver-market ‘silly season’ has moved into full swing this weekend.
The hot topic at Red Bull’s home track has been the future of Max Verstappen, the state of his contact, and the likelihood of him leaving for greener pastures – most particularly Mercedes.
Verstappen has a contact with Red Bull until 2020, but there is a performance clause that could potentially allow him to be free at the end of this season.
The clause centres on his championship position at a certain point in the year, although the details of what position he needs to be in, and when, are murky.
Verstappen won in Austria a year ago and looks a genuine threat to Leclerc’s victory hopes on Sunday
Anyway, Red Bull motorsport boss Helmut Marko has admitted he is worried that Verstappen might be tempted away by Mercedes.
The prospect of a Hamilton-Verstappen ‘super-team’ is a mouth-watering one for neutrals, perhaps less so for Wolff. It is far from clear he would want the headache of sticking Verstappen in alongside Hamilton and waiting for the nuclear explosion that would inevitably occur one way or another.
Both drivers were asked about it after qualifying.
Hamilton said: “People are always making up stuff. It’s the first I’ve heard of it. I think the team’s pretty happy with Valtteri and me. So I do know Max is definitely interested in opportunities. I don’t know. Maybe. If there is [a chance], then great.”
Turning to Verstappen, he added: “I don’t mind driving with you. I’ll drive against whoever.”
For his part, Verstappen said: “I guess there’s people who know more than me!”
Wolff has to decide whether to stick with Bottas, promote reserve driver Esteban Ocon, who lost his place at what is now Racing Point at the end of last season, or entertain the possibility of something else. He rates Verstappen, but that’s not the same as wanting him to be in the team next year, for a number of potential reasons.
Wolff said: “I haven’t spoken to Max and I would like to continue like I have done it in the past, first to evaluate our current line-up and to discuss with the drivers what their views are before really entering into a proper discussion with anyone else.
“That is valid to any driver who can possibly bring something to the game at Mercedes. We have exciting junior drivers that merit to be in F1, Esteban being the one who fell through the chairs last year. And putting that puzzle into place is something I’d like to do over the summer.”
As for Verstappen, his preference is to stay at Red Bull-Honda and make work a partnership that he believes has great potential, and is only in its first season. But of course he is not in F1 to scrape around for lower podium positions or worse, as he has for most of this season so far.
No decisions have been made, and this topic will be around for some weeks yet.
Norris heading for stardom
Norris said he was happy McLaren had maintained their pace from the French Grand Prix
Lando Norris is such a laid-back and down-to-earth character that he sounded almost disappointed with qualifying sixth, which has now become fifth following a penalty for Haas driver Kevin Magnussen.
The equivocation? It was that he had not found the 0.028 seconds he would have needed to beat Magnussen on track.
“The thing that makes me happy is when we know we have accomplish everything we could have done,” he said. “The team gave me a good car this weekend. I was happy. The only thing that could have made it even better was beating Magnussen.
“It was 0.02secs and there was 0.02secs in my driving, which let me down little bit.
“I guess I’m a little self-critical sometimes but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.”
Jolyon Palmer column: Norris living up to future champion billing
Norris entered F1 this year amid high expectations, and he is very much delivering – as is his fellow Briton George Russell in rather more trying circumstances at Williams.
McLaren are impressed – like everyone else.
“The most important thing is raw speed,” said McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl, asked to sum up the impact Norris has made so far. “It is the basis for every successful driver and he has shown from the first race onwards that he had this speed.
“If you go in your first ever F1 qualifying and you score P8, as he did in Melbourne, and then do it more and more often, and showing great speed and great handling of the races, this environment, is impressive.
“He will have a great career in F1 and I am looking forward to having some good years with him at McLaren.”

Ekstasis end notes
Usually I wait until I’m done with the story to write up end notes, but Ekstasis is looking to take some time to write. So before I forget the details (and I’ve already forgotten some things) I thought I’d post the notes here.
Note: this is a working draft; I’ll be revising these since I still have some other stuff to go through.
Chapter 1
Ekstasis starts after Furiosa has lost her arm but before she goes to visit Angharad and the girls at the end of Fortuna. That part I haven't come to yet.
The Ace talks more in detail about putting on mourning scars in chapter 12 of Gloria. It's assumed that many people have already put on mourning (Coil, Morsov, Nux, etc.) since it's been some time since Acosta's death.
Imperator Acosta dies in chapter 4 of Fortuna.
Coil had been doing the bulk of caring for Furiosa at night, mostly when she was very ill, until the Ace was well enough to take over. He could only come later in the evenings due to work. Furiosa does not remember those early weeks of recuperation when Coil was by her side and never learns about it until many years later in Gloria.
Furiosa and Coil's earlier relationship is explored in Tenera. In chapter 4 of Euphoria, their friendship and relationship is damaged at the last War Games. They haven't been as close in recent months as they were before the War Games.
Chapter 2
This is the car that Nux drives in Fortuna.
Morsov was assigned to Nux as his Lancer in Fortuna. He's surprised because Furiosa is not wearing the white and is basically topless.
Morsov saved Furiosa's life on top of the War Rig in Fortuna.
Rose the Blackthumb is a character that can be seen in the movie, a heavyset War Boy in overalls that is doing auto body work on the Interceptor when Max makes his wild run through the lower warren of the War Tower.
The higher number the gauge, the thinner the steel. 22 is more along the lines of contemporary cars, which are far lighter and more fragile than classic cars of the 20th century.
A War Boy of War Boys is one who has survived the desert initiation run, which is written about in L'Arbre du Ténéré, a three day walk with no food or water.
From the moment Slit accepts Nux's proposal, several days pass, up to a few weeks. I think I had this figured out when I was writing Tenera, that it would take a week or two to get everything ready.
Nux had probably been using a communal wheel up until this point, probably some nearly unadorned one that is used by the daily patrol drivers whose vehicles are assigned at random as opposed to the more ornate and decorated wheel that he and Slit put together.
If Slit had left Nux alone in the car overnight, it would have said something rather unpleasant about their relationship to others.
Slit's bracer then is a copy of Rictus' bracer. Copying elite goods using ordinary materials is archaeologically attested as far back as the Chalcolithic.
In the short story Our World, Nux tells Capable that his bracelet is welded on, but he's not telling the truth there.
The story of the hex key is in chapter 2 of Vulnera.
So far, Slit is careful to keep his self-harm to parts of his body that are covered by his clothes.
Chapter 3
Some of the work done on Furiosa's hand is described in chapter 5 of Rota.
There are heavier and lighter deka- weights (since it's base-10 metric), and War Boys know from context which one is which. So either dekagrams or dekakilos. This idea originally came from Italian, which uses etto to signify 100 gram measurements.
Morsov, your Buzzard is showing. Stop staring at Rose literally like a piece of meat.
A few weeks have passed since Furiosa left the infirmary in the first chapter and her arm is finally completely healed up.
In lieu of traditional fats for soap making, soap at the Citadel is made from petroleum distillates.
Coil has been sick with worry that Furiosa would die. He's already lost one partner and the stress of possibly losing another partner has been hard on him.
Petroleum jelly is naturally black. The idea here is that there is a more expensive purified clear one that is used medicinally, and otherwise the regular black one is used decoratively.
Stonker's backstory and childhood is explored in later chapters of Vincula, starting at chapter 9.
War Boys that have an interest and skill in drawing sometimes end up learning how to brand. Win definitely did this too.
Acosta had been Ace's friend since they were both teenagers. This can be seen in various chapters of Vincula, starting around chapter 4.
Morsov's childhood and his being rescued out of the waste is explored in Refuge.
The Ace putting a crewmate under the wheels is discussed in chapter 4 of Rota.
More on Morsov's relationship with his former Driver Elvis can be found in chapter 4 of Euphoria.
The music box plays Hushabye Mountain.
Chapter 4
Bioluminescent glowworms are native to Australian caves. The Buzzards cultivate them when they can for extra light.
In the dark, Buzzards all wear a small red piezoelectric LED bulb. Red light helps them keep their night vision. Their cars also are fitted with red bulbs.
Tran and Dart were Coil and Furiosa's rival team in chapter 3 Vulnera. They've all been buddies since (see Lamia).
The current hierarchy, from top to bottom, and rating War Boys by experience is Furiosa, the Ace, Tran, Coil, Dart, Morsov. However since Morsov trained directly under the Ace, he's been put in charge.
War Boys eat mostly non-meat foods. The only meat that's eaten in this part of the wasteland is human, which as far as the War Boys know, only the Buzzards eat, though the War Lords are known to indulge, such as in chapter 6 of Vulnera.
The cohort of War Pups are those specifically chosen to be trained to be future Lancers and Drivers, which is a small percentage of the whole (less than 20%). All the other kids are Organics, which means they do little jobs around the Citadel and work on the farms. Sometimes non-cohort boys can work their way into the Revhead world and ostensibly get trained up to be a Lancer, but that sort of promotion is not as common as it was in the past during Ace's youth for example, since there is more available labor now and those in charge can afford to be picky about who gets promoted to do what.
After the War Party in Fortuna, many captives and vehicles were captured.
The War Games are described in chapters 3 and 4 of Euphoria, and live training is described in chapter 3 of Vulnera.
The Ace fell off the War Rig during a battle in Fortuna.
Stonker is defined as “something that is very large or impressive of its kind.” I first came across the word reading BBC Formula 1 Grand Prix highlights (“That was a stonker of a lap!”).
The goggles Morsov gives to the Ace were the ones that Morsov brought with him when he came to the Citadel in Refuge. Of course, rubber parts have been replaced over time, but he gives these to the Ace, who wears them from now on.
Chapter 5
Nux lesson plans as part of his daydreaming, among other things. Visualization is important for many athletes, actors, and others in general (e.g. the book “The Inner Game of Tennis”) Specifically for this story, I envisioned it as how Formula 1 drivers do a lot of visualization. A dramatization of this can be seen in the movie Rush where James Hunt visualizes the Monaco Grand Prix course. Look up 'Internal Motor Imagery Rush 2013' on Youtube.
The Tertius and Quartus Imperators are the two Imperators seen on top of the Gigahorse in the movie. I think some fans call them Frank and John (John and Frank?). I don't know if they're fraternal or identical twins.
The very formal speech of the twin Imperators is partially to show their status, but mostly because Immortan Joe demands propriety in his presence. As soon as business is over, they drop the formality, but notice that they pick up the formality again with the Ace, suggesting they have some serious official business with him.
The different emblems can be seen in the movie: The Prime Imperator wears the full emblem, made from metal, and the Secundus (aka Composite) Imperator wears a leather badge.
Furiosa changes her manner of speech to be more deferential to the higher-ranked Imperators. However throughout the series, she hasn't changed her manner of speech much unless she's talking to someone higher-ranked, which sort of suggests that she's always a little bit off in contrast to the other War Boys, never quite fully acculturated into War Boy Society, though her style of speech turns out to be very suited for the way an Imperator speaks.
Imperator Acosta's given name is taken from Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso's last name.
“Extended family of the long run” means that the Imperators have known the Ace since they were all survivors of the long failed run to Walhalla, a place in the mountains. This story is told in Rota.
The Tertius and the Quartus know Coil because Coil is their son, by a Milking Mother. Coil does not know this however, as parentage is kept secret. For those curious, Coil's mother has already appeared in the series as a minor background character.
Tribal affiliation is more important than race or gender in this world, so Morsov will always be slightly ostracized because of his Buzzard origins. Bandits and ferals are considered opportunists and many of the children they might have may be captives themselves or claim to be captives, but Buzzards are hated enemies.
Dart's the mathematical one.
At 11.25 hands, Stonker is just shy of 6'6”. Unlike Nux, who stayed very small until he grew very suddenly, Stonker has always been tall for his age, so he had been promoted quickly to account for it, making Driver before he grew too tall to be a Lancer. It also didn't hurt that he was well-connected.
Many minor War Boy characters are named after friends' pets. Bucket is no exception.
Stonker must have made an official offer to Bucket at the War Games, because it was at the same War Games when Morsov's Driver broke up with him. Of course, Morsov losing his ride was probably not official for a few days, so Stonker wouldn't have known. Once Stonker asked Bucket properly before the community, there would be no way to back out of it politely.
Paired War Boys often smooth out each other's rough spots. Dart does this for Tran, and Nux does this for Slit.
Dart's too far-sighted to be very helpful doing close-up work. He passed his Revhead qualifications by being strong in his understanding of theory and concepts, even though he can't see well enough to do the fine work. He's more useful as a scout, a look-out, and a sniper.
As Miss Giddy says, there is always a girl called Splendid. (Euphoria, Chapter 3).
The new Secundus is Elvis, Morsov's former Driver. The prior Secundus died in battle.
Chapter 6
In the Iliad, Patroclus is addressed as 'O my Rider'.
Win is quoting an old Middle English song, “Sumer is Icumen in”.
Coil and Win are hiding out in the old warren, which is the same place that the Ace hides Morsov in Refuge.
Coil signs “crazy about you”, similar to Jessie in the original Mad Max movie.
The Ace talks more about what happens to Imperators' bodies after their deaths in chapter 5 of Rota.
Moki came from a Trader family.
Frances is the Ace's older sister, who is described in Rota.
This is a long time before he is known as The Ace, so he's merely called Ace.
Nothing goes to waste; anything that can be eaten will be eaten.
Ace is of course, ace, but not aromantic. But Acosta doesn't understand, and thinks it a blow to his pride. I haven't written it, but the reason Acosta suggests that Coil should fool around with other War Boys during the War Games (mentioned in Euphoria, chapter 4) is because that's what Acosta did himself after his break with Ace years ago. It's very quietly hinted at in Vincula, but Moki became Acosta's lover, which gave Moki a lot of influence (and thus furthered both Win and Stonker's careers). Moki loved Acosta despite the fact that he knew Acosta always loved Ace more.
In Vincula, it's revealed that in the past, Elvis also courted Coil when Coil was a Lancer. He is much more respectful toward Coil than he is toward Morsov, because Coil is very well-connected and has many friends. In contrast, Morsov is poorly connected and socially ostracized, which gives Elvis more freedom in abusing him because there would not be social pressure to make Elvis stop. What Elvis does to Morsov, he would not dare to do to another Lancer.
Weight requirements can be very strict on pursuit vehicles, where Drivers and Lancers both want to be as strong as possible without overly weighing down the vehicle. This follows any formula of racing cars where driver have to keep down their weight, which is much harder for tall drivers than smol ones (see Nico Hulkenberg vs Fernando Alonso).
In this case, the shopbound Revhead Bristow probably worked their way up from an Organic and never trained to fight. It's not always the case that someone is shopbound because they screw up or they're too tall.
Gastown and Bulletfarm War Boys are a lot poorer than Citadel War Boys; in general, they aren't fed or watered as much. Of course things are different with their Imperators, but the War Boys in general just are not as strong or healthy compared to Citadel War Boys. This is my theory as to why Max can cut a swathe of destruction through the Polecats; not that Max is inherently stronger or a better fighter, but that even a Citadel bloodbag gets more to eat and drink than a Gastown War Boy.
Win is singing, “In the Shadow of Clinch Mountain.” Besides symbolic reasons for this song, it also shows how the world was extremely international before it was killed, so culture was spread all around.
Chapter 7
Tin boxes in lieu of cardboard, since cardboard is more costly to produce.
I never described the internal construction of the tanker, but the way I imagine it, besides a large interior with which to haul goods and slaves, much of the tanker is lined with a water compartment that insulates the goods once it's full of water. There is a subcompartment within the water compartment for milk, and the water around it keeps it cool and insulated.
Balanced packing is important so the tanker does not tip over when its lowered down on the lift. If it's unbalanced, it could cause a lot of trouble. There is a famous example of a military cargo jet that floundered and crashed in Afghanistan due to improperly secured vehicles leading to an unbalanced load.
The triangle run is referenced in both Vulnera and Gloria. It is a reference to the historic transatlantic triangular trade of slaves, sugar, and rum.
Numbered Imperators serve Immortan Joe directly.
Runs to Bulletfarm and Gastown don't require more than a small crew because the Citadel territory is guarded very fiercely. Long Bartertown runs require big escorts to protect the goods as they go far from Citadel territory.
The Wretched support themselves by working the mills. These millsworks are mostly in the lower part of the Third Tower, and the Wretched are segregated from the War Boys to prevent any possible spread of disease, though there are some Organics and Imperators that oversee their work. These people are paid in food and water. Fighting War Boys never interact with such people.
These little terrace gardens are as close to private ownership of land as it gets for War Boys. Some Revheads and Organics may tend little plots, trading off surplus foodstuff or giving it to families down below.
The hook seen in Max's long run is used to run a small cable car between the Immortan's Tower and the War Tower. It helps move goods easily between the towers.
The idea for calling the motorcylists Moto-Lancers came from MotoGP, a major international motorcycle racing format.
Hundy is a slang term for a $100 bill. It's also the name of a friend's pet.
Support trucks double carrying gear and fighting War Boys. Some of them have mounted flamethrowers or guns.
Furiosa inadvertently builds alliances with War Pups by feeding them.
The Lift Imperator is named after the farmer in Babe, Arthur Hoggett.
Rule of three is first mentioned in Vulnera and is a vehicle safety principle for Lancers. It means making sure to have three contact points with the vehicle, ideally at all times or at least as much as possible. So both feet and one hand, both hands and one foot, etc.
The Immortan's drummers of course are the Doof Wagon drummers.
Chapter 8
An early idea I had was that some War Boys got sick from from painting the dials of their cars with radioluminescent paint, much like the radium girls poisoning cases in the early 20th century.
For various ideas on how War Boys would wear their blankets, I went looking at fashion blogs since oversized scarves, aka 'blanket scarves' were (are?) popular. So Cosmo and various other sites gave me some good ideas on how to wear blankets since I wanted individual War Boys to have their own styles.
Of course Furiosa has no idea what's going on in Morsov's personal life (ain't no Imperator got time for drama), but she would probably agree that as long as it didn't interfere with work or morale, that it would be fine.
Stonker's 'strange background' is described more in Vincula, chapters 9 and above. The strangeness is that he is probably one of the only War Boys around to have been raised by a parent, Win. This is the same Win who was Coil's former Driver.
Before he was rescued by the Citadel and became a War Boy, Win came from a Trader family and had always worn a condenser. Some notes in Vincula talk about this more, but generally the idea is that without regular and certain sources of water, Traders relied on condensers, recycling even their exhalations. This is of course similar to the Fremen in Dune (though possibly not as smelly since Traders don't wear stillsuits to recycle sweat and waste).
I noticed in the movie that there is this thing that sort of looks like a rolled curtain tucked against the ceiling of the War Rig between the seats. I imagine that this is a privacy curtain for the Imperator, so they can get some privacy and rest.
A bollard of course is something that can be used to block traffic. This is to stand in for 'bollocks', which would be the more correct way of cursing.
Not all War Boys are sexually inclined. This particular support truck has a couple asexual War Boys.
Bucket has had his teeth filed to sharp points, which suggests that his origins are from outside of the Citadel.
The top belt, the one that many War Boys wear is used both as a practical safety measure (e.g. clipping it to the vehicle in order to take a little nap, in chapter 1 of Tenera) and also as an erotic symbol. For example, in Delicia chapter 2, Win tells Coil to undress for sex but to keep his top belt on.
The Ace had intentionally left Furiosa and Coil alone.
Note that the Nux car had a crummy seat stuck in beside the Driver's seat, which gives us an idea of where Nux and Slit are headed in this story.
A temporary seat was bolted in the FDK when the Ace and Slit came to pick up Nux out of the waste in L'Arbre du Ténéré.
Stonker is telling Morsov a story that Win had told him ages ago (Vincula). As babyrubysoho asked me, is this Bedtime Star Wars? The answer of course is, yes.
Slit's probably going to have to reopen his wound so his mouth can open more. More on this later.
Chapter 9
I had an idea recently that the Buzzards were also called such because of their buzzing staticky radio code, not just because they were carrion feeders and scavengers. More on Buzzards later.
When the Buzzard's backhoe tears off half of the front gunner's nest, paper and all sorts of other debris goes flying. I suggest that it's full of accounting papers and radio logs, among other things.
The War Boys are definitely playing travel chess or checkers.
Youtube has many examples of people using Morse code on the radio and it is evident when people have practiced very hard at being good at it. Of course, cryptography and language mixtures have warped the standard Morse code so that the War Boys have no way of deciphering what is being said.
The new binary of the world is 1-2 and not 0-1. So banging on the roof of the car to notify the Driver comes in pairs, the War Rig needing assistance/speeding up the convoy sounds in pairs. Furiosa giving Max the kill switch code is also in this binary code (1-2, red-black). Of course the exception is that the Ace pounds on the top door three times to notify Furiosa about flares from the Citadel, but that's probably because he's seen something very unusual.
At a guess, food bars range between 400-600 calories a bar.
Eating five times a day is first referenced in Vincula, which is what the agricultural War Boys do during times of heavy work. I borrowed this idea from agricultural workers in rural Taiwan who apparently eat five times a day during the rice planting because of how hard the work is. In this case it's not so much that they're eating a lot, it's more that they're spreading out small meals over the entire day to stay more focused and alert.
Kashi now makes some savory bars that remind me how I imagine War Boy food bars. Costco on the other hand has some veggie burgers (Don Lee Farms Veggie Patties) that remind me of the War Boy mush. Mmm-mmm, McFeasting!
Slit's quote comes from Vulnera, where he talks more about his past.
The principle of aiding stranded vehicles in the open waste is something like the way ships are obligated to help out any other ship in distress.
The concept that the heliograph was much safer is because it needs a direct line of sight and to intercept it, someone would have to know exactly when the message was being sent and be in that direct line of sight, which would be very difficult since the road between the Citadel and Gastown is very well-guarded. For example, the Buzzards probably use radio because otherwise they would have trouble coordinating their attacks. However, being on a radio frequency opens them up to being overheard by Citadel forces.
The way the Ace estimates the caravan capacity is by counting the vehicles. (4 trucks x 2) + (3 cars x 2) + (5 motorcycles x 1) = 19. (4 trucks x 3) + (3 cars x 3) + (5 motorcycles x 2) = 31. He's giving a reasonable estimated min and max, though of course it could be a few people more or less.
A glass bottle like this can be seen mounted on the dash of the War Rig.
The bottle the Trader carries is basically similar to the one that is tied to the horse when Max gets sent to gulag in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.
Sharing water is a show of trust as water is incredibly valuable.
I used a Wiradjuri online dictionary for names and pronunciation. https://wiradjuri.regenr8.org
The Noongar are traditionally from the southwest of Western Australia and the Wiradjuri are traditionally from central New South Wales near the east coast of Australia. The mix of people from different parts of the continent is intentional, and to suggest that people everywhere have been displaced because of historic calamity. Besides being a place name, Narrandera is a clan name of the Wiradjuri, and also a moiety, from what I understand. Narrandera also means prickly lizard or frilled lizard.
Not all Traders use the same naming conventions. So Win gave his family name first as many Asians do, but Garru is giving her given name. Garru is a Wiradjuri word for magpie.
The clothes that the People Eater wears (the three piece suit) is very much like what Traders would normally wear. Though usually not with the exposed nipple rings...
It hasn't been developed much, but I thought that the People Eater should be a false Trader, someone posing as a Trader but who is not from a traditional Trader family.
Garru just taught Furiosa the two-fingered salute and its more impolite variant. Now she can flip anyone off!
Garru has to get the other Traders' attention before signing.
For example, soldiers stationed on the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea tend to be picked for height, supposedly to intimidate the other side.
I haven't gotten there yet, but this description of Nux was to suggest that before he falls sick, he was actually heavier built. The idea was that when we see him in the movie, he's already lost at least 20 lbs which can be seen in how his clothes don't fit as well (notice how loose his trousers are compared to someone like the Ace).
Instead of having proper lights, the Trader truck has a bunch of flashlights stuck to its front.
The colors of the Traders were picked from Lazytown's three main characters: Robbie Rotten (red check), Stephanie (pink stripe), and Sportacus (blue). You can blame Elinekeit for this.
Aunty Entity is of course the ruler of Bartertown, portrayed by Tina Turner in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.
“Pinkie” aka Marlee is an albino.
Stonker should have used 'a little' or 'some' but instead he picks the wrong word because he is not super fluent in Trader. This was written to suggest how someone who knows their second language better than their first might use their first language.
Nguyen is Stonker's given name, but as Stonker's mother was deaf, she only named him with sign language. The name Stonker was given to him by the Tertius Imperator. Nguyen is pronounced “Win”. Stonker does not know any of this.
Unfortunately I don't remember where I found the name Marlee (because I remember changing the spelling around but I don't recall the original spelling), but I seem to remember it was also a bird name, like another kind of magpie or crow.
Stonker's not related to these Traders, but the Traders might know people who are related to him.
I recall using the U-Haul rental truck site to get an idea of how much a truck might carry.
Note that the People Eater wears black as well, aping high-ranked Traders.
“Afghanistan is a big place” is a quote from Metal Gear Solid V.
“Remember him when you look at the night sky” is a quote from the original Mad Max movie.
In Vulnera, Furiosa helped Coil shave. It says something that Nux is doing it himself without Slit's help.
The beam of light coming from Bartertown is to suggest the Luxor Sky Beam in Las Vegas.
Chapter 10
Sometimes I make sure that imagery ties together from scene to scene and chapter to chapter.
That's definitely Stonker and Morsov.
This is Bartertown in the future, so it has expanded from the Bartertown we saw in Beyond Thunderdome. A small town has formed outside the gates, similar to how the Wretched encampment has sprung up around the Citadel.
Despite the Citadel being a very rich settlement as the waste goes, Bartertown is even richer, so there are actually animals like dogs.
The Vuvalini visit Bartertown too. But they run the opposite of War Boys, on moonless nights.
The entry into Bartertown has changed. I imagined these queues as a cross between Disneyland and the county fair.
In Thunderdome, the signs said “Pigs = Power”. However, I have removed the pigs from the story as they have mostly died out. This is because pigs are harder to keep than cattle, goats, or sheep, since they eat the same kinds of food as people do, as opposed to the former who can live off scrub. In addition, pigs need to be kept protected from the sun. There are scholarly articles on why pork was not eaten in the ancient near east because pigs directly compete with humans for food and require shelter, which cattle, sheep, and goats do not need. The assumption I am using here is that Beyond Thunderdome was set closer in time to the present pre-collapse day, therefore there were still a lot of animals around (monkey, horses, camels, pigs, dogs, etc.) but that between that time and the time the story is set, there were many periods of environmental hardship where many of these larger vertebrates died out. Pigs therefore are no longer used to power the methane farm; it's now human waste.
In Thunderdome, you could also see the Collector's abacus on the little desk.
The title of Assayer is made up; there wasn't a name for this character in Thunderdome, not that I am aware of.
The Assayer is probably used to seeing all sorts of homemade artificial limbs.
When I thought about it, Furiosa's bodice could not have feasibly survived daily wear for years. At some point it probably wore out, and now she has a shirt that's sort of similar, though it will probably have to take a beating for the next two years and change before we get to Fury Road.
This section was actually written in fall of 2015. Originally, Ekstasis started in Bartertown, but I realized I had to backtrack because there were a lot of ideas to explore with the characters. I don't regret it, but it's really taken some time to get to this point where I could use this section. It's taken some moderate editing to match this with the current story and I had to take out some things I really liked, like Coil picking up a sizable wound but being very proud of being able to have a scar to remember Furiosa's first run as Imperator.
From Beyond Thunderdome we can see that Bartertown is heavily fortified, built up against a plateau. I would suggest that beyond excellent geographic placement, it has good, reliable access to water, which is what's kept it an important center of trade through the years. Now that many generations have passed since the initial founding of Bartertown, the plateau itself has been carved through with canyons and planted; there are many farms and even some livestock. Of course access to those farms is very limited; it is all fully owned by Aunty Entity. There is an inner city closer to the plateau where the more wealthy live and work. The outer city is spread out further, though the Thunderdome and Aunty Entity's tower are still in their historic places. The existence of the inner and outer city suggests social and economic stratification over time.
The Tomi Caf is the Atomic Cafe.
Some of the buildings in Beyond Thunderdome look like they are plastered brick or mud brick, which also implies water wealth since if water is very scarce, one would not waste it on building materials.
Notice that Stonker refers to the kid consistently as a 'pup' but Morsov calls it a child.
The tailor's man is probably a servant as opposed to a husband.
In the ensuing generations after nuclear annihilation, we are starting to see a slow return to a cash-based economy. This was pioneered by Immortan Joe in early runs to Bartertown, which is discussed in Rota.
Sandals with the words “follow me” imprinted on the bottom were used by prostitutes in ancient Greece.
For reference on the iconography, I imagine that one of Morsov's arm brands is the moon wheel and the other is the sun wheel.
The 'Aqua-Cola slaves' reference is definitely meant to be commentary on the modern garment industry.
Notice that the Vuvalini in the movie wear scarves that are shot through with this rust-orange color that perhaps was once red.
The Many Mothers as a tribe culturally have higher respect for elders than War Boy society, which is more about respect for rank than age.
Some work would take a year not just because of intricacy but because the person making it was often not a full-time weaver, so it would be harder and longer work for them.
The bracelet on Coil's wrist was made from Furiosa's old dust wrap because she had no present for Coil on the night they were paired up. He's been wearing it since. It's intentional that he wears it on his right wrist, because some elements elements of Coil's character was meant to parallel Max in counterpoint.
I thought that War Boys who were too short to be Lancers (below 9.5 hands) ended up being sent to Gastown to be Polecats.
The oxen are actually much smaller than current oxen. I calculated them to be about 1200 lbs a piece, which is on the smaller end of the spectrum for bulls. The idea of course is that environmental stresses and selective favored smaller, more hardy animals that needed less water and food.
Why oxen? Partially because it is an ostentatious sign of wealth for Aunty Entity to keep animals this big just to drag around a cart, but mostly because the Merovingian kings also traveled around in an ox-cart, dispensing justice. There is also some ancient near eastern imagery connecting bulls to kingship. This is to tie back to the idea that they are living in a time similar to the dark ages.
Working oxen need shoes similar to the way that working horses need horseshoes.
The historic iconography of the ruler is one who holds the scepter and the orb. Here, Aunty Entity continues that ancient tradition that dates back to at least the Roman Empire.
Like the kings of the dark ages and the medieval, Aunty Entity is believed to have the power of healing. The paint chip will likely be resold as a relic.

The 10 greatest Formula One races of all time
Formula 1 marks an important milestone in the Chinese Grand Prix, as the cars line up before the start of the race, it will be the 1,000th time in the history of sport.
The hi-tech technology that we see today on the networks and garages is far from the small bays at deserted airports that greeted the drivers for the first world championship race at Silverstone in 1950.
Among the changes over the years, there have been incredible races that have helped propel the sport to the popularity it enjoys today. Sportsmail looks at the 10 best grands prix of all time

There was a very brief moment in 2005 when it seemed that Ferrari could challenge the title and it was not in the United States when only four opponents made them could record.

Fangio & # 39; s biggest threat to the race was the Ferrari & # 39; s from Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins who had chosen to run on full tanks without pitstops.
After a mistake in the lead, a mistake from a technician saw that he lost another 30 seconds and he came in third place, 48 seconds behind Collins.
From there the loading began.
After passing both, Fangio enjoyed the final lap before he achieved his final F1 victory, one in which he reflected: & # 39; I have never driven so fast in my life before and I think not that I will ever be able to do it again. & # 39;

& # 39; This is terrible, this is pretty horrible, this is the worst start of a Grand Prix I have ever seen in my life. & # 39;
The race started with a collision with 13 cars in severe weather conditions and never seemed to rise once it got underway
Damon Hill took the lead at the restart but became quickly passed by Michael Schumacher who was then looking for an easy victory. However, blinded by rain, he rode David Coulthard in the back, trying to hit the McLaren driver, leaving them both out of the race.

Schumacher was so angry that after & # 39; three-wheeled & # 39; his car back to the pitlane that I tried to physically confront the Scot after storming in the McLaren garage. resumed the lead but was quickly picked up by Jordan teammate Ralf Schumacher. With Jordan for their first win and one for two, Hill pressed team boss Eddie Jordan to prevent Schumacher from passing, claiming that they would be able to collide both drivers and fail to achieve a historic result
Jordan admitted, and after a few radio messages, Schumacher finally obeyed the order not to pass Hill who sealed his last Formula 1 victory.

In addition to the pit stops, Massa effectively led the entire race from pole position and was ready to be crowned as world champion when he crossed the finish line.
But when the rain became more intense, Glock's grooved tires had lost all grip and followed the last corner. Hamilton passed the Toyota to regain fifth and snatched the title away from Massa – leaving a previously festive Ferrari garage stunned.

Marquez wins, Rossi crashes and Syahrin storms into the top ten at Sepang
Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) claimed his 70th career win after taking victory at the Shell Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix. The 2018 Champion looked set to lock horns with nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) in the final stages, but the race would end in disaster for ‘The Doctor’ as he crashed out with four to go. Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) completed the podium at Sepang International Circuit, the latter from pole, and home hero Hafizh Syahrin (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) stormed from the back of the grid to the top ten in a race to remember in Malaysia.
When the lights went out it was Rossi who got a stellar launch from P2, with pole man Zarco slightly sluggish off the line and ‘The Doctor’ getting a comfortable holeshot ahead of the the Frenchman, who managed to brake late to slot into P2. Jack Miller (Alma Pramac Racing) was able to leapfrog Andrea Iannone (Team Suzuki Ecstar) into P3 at the start, with Marquez making up one position into P6. The premier class riders then settled, but this came after Marquez and teammate Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) exchanged paint on the opening lap. The 2018 Champion would soon start to make his way forward though, despite a hairy last corner moment at the end of the opening lap that led to Iannone crashing out directly behind the seven-time Champion.
Back at the front, Rossi and Zarco were off as Yamaha had a 1-2 in the opening exchanges, but Marquez hunted them down after making his way past Miller. The Honda rider was on the exhaust of Zarco’s M1 machine and soon enough he managed to slice his way through. Turn 14 was the chosen destination after a slight error from the number 5 machine, with arch-rival Rossi now in his sights. But the number 46 was in an excellent rhythm at the front as the gap between the duo hovered at 3/4s of a second, with Zarco beginning to lose touch at the halfway stage of the race as Rossi continued to press on. 1.1 seconds was the gap to Marquez as 10 laps ticked over at Sepang.
With eight to go, Rossi was still pumping in the lap times to keep the gap above a second to Marquez, with Zarco now over three seconds behind his fellow Yamaha rider. However, the gap then dipped below the one-second barrier with seven to go and the seven-time Champion was hunting down the nine-time Champion. As ever, Marquez was pushing the limit and there was a slight scare for the number 93 at Turn 5; a ‘mini Marquez moment’, let’s say.
With five to go at Sepang, the gap was just 0.7, as we set ourselves for a grandstand finish between two of the sport’s all-time greats. But then, disaster struck ‘The Doctor’. A return to victory after 26 races went begging as he lost the front of his YZR-M1 at Turn 1 with four laps to go and he picked up his stricken Yamaha in front of the Rossi grandstand, leaving Marquez with a lonely ride home to the win. The result also sealed the Constructors’ crown for Honda, adding yet more to celebrate for the number 93 and his factory.
The battle for P2 and P3 between Zarco and Rins was far from finished, however. As the last lap began, Zarco led but Rins was soon past, with the Frenchman having no answer for the Suzuki and the Spaniard crossing the line to take his fourth podium of the season. Zarco took his first since Jerez in third, not able to quite strike back but completing a top weekend for both.
After a less than impressive start, Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) recovered to string together a strong latter half of the Grand Prix to finish P4, with Pedrosa crossing the line P5 on his final racing visit to the Sepang International Circuit. It was a subdued race for one of the pre-race favourites Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), however, as the winner here for the last two seasons couldn’t replicate those results and took P6. After Rossi’s crash though, the Italian has sealed P2 in the Championship.
Angel Nieto Team’s Alvaro Bautista was P7 in his penultimate MotoGP™ race and he led fellow Desmosedici rider Miller as the Australian slipped down to P8 after a good start. P9 was his teammate Danilo Petrucci, but arguably ride of the day went to a certain Malaysian: Hafizh Syahrin (Monster Yamaha Tech 3). Starting P23, the home hero was able to get a stunning start as he got himself up to P12 on the opening lap, eventually claiming P10 to close Franco Morbidelli (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) down in the battle for ‘Rookie of the Year’. Emotional before and after the race, it was the first time a Malaysian had ever competed in the premier class and Syahrin marked the occasion in style – even heading out onto the main straight to throw his gloves into a deservedly adoring crowd.
Morbidelli took P12 to limit some of that damage in the standings and remains ahead, just behind Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini). LCR Honda Castrol replacement rider Stefan Bradl claimed P13 and points, the German finishing just ahead of teammate Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitsu), with Bradley Smith (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) completing the points.
A scorching encounter in Sepang ends with Marquez on top once more, with Rossi left to ponder on what could have been. Valencia in a couple of weeks’ time brings to 2018 Championship to a close, don’t miss any of the action from there as the engines go on for the final time this season – and the top Independent Team rider and Rookie of the Year titles are decided.
A hero’s welcome: Syahrin stormed from the back of the grid to the top ten in one of the rides of the day in his first home GP in the premier class
