my best friend described thorin as the antagonist in the hobbit (movies - specifically the first one) and honestly i wonder why i hadn't thought of that before
#her claim is that thorin spends a lot of time being mean to bilbo (the protagonist) by deeming him not enough and generally excluding him#when the teacher asked her what word first pops up in her mind when thinking about the movies (specifically the first) she said “inadequacy”#because that's what bilbo felt / was made to feel by thorin#and thinking of it it's true - despite thorin later apologizing#and thinking of the book thorin can be considered an antagonist there too#he canonically becomes that for some time near the end when bilbo (the main protagonist) sides with the elvenking#although we could argue about that but i'm eepy#also in the book thorin doesn't explicitly suffer from dragon sickness so he's just being a dick#although we could argue about that too but... eepyness is winning#the hobbit#thorin oakenshield#bilbo baggins
