Useless HC #902  I’ll just be over here imagining teenaged Caleb volunteering at the local nursing home to dress up as Santa -- all due to his height and ability to stuff his costume and the lack of any other real interest from folks around town. Didn’t need pay, was happy to do it, but taking the costume home to dress up as Mr. Claus for Cora (even though she was past the age of believing in him), on Christmas Eve, to give her whatever present he’d managed to get his hands on.

Truly my most useless Headcanon to date, but I like to imagine there’s a pretty outdated hotel in Alston and whenever the Warren’s refer to it, they call it “The Ritz”.

The Warren House (this photo is obviously an approximation, further details under the cut because I love houses byeeeeee). 

Located in Alston, Kentucky

Built in the early 1900′s by Caleb & Cora’s Great-Grandfather, Thomas Sawyer (yes, I know, they know, we know - Tom Sawyer, but that’s the man’s name). 

Currently owned by Caleb Warren. Operates as Cora’s home base for the time being. 

Located on two-acres of partially wooded land. The house is just off-center a .75 acre clearing, with the perimeter of the property heavily wooded. 

Two stories, rustic farmhouse vibes (”If you are thinking HGTV farmhouse that is the wrong kind” - Caleb). 

After Cora left for school Caleb needed a project. It was cathartic for him, to rip up the flooring, take down some walls, and transform what had been his mother’s and then... well... ruined by his father. He worked hard and with careful consideration. Do not insult it to his face. Just move along with any alternative opinions, thank you kindly.

The back yard is large, and fenced. From the family room is access to a stone patio and large open yard for Roo to run in. Toward the back of the yard is another fence and gate, which leads to the garden. It was not fenced like this before Caleb owned it. 

The garden was Alice’s and for awhile after she died it was in disrepair. It’s where Cora found a lot of peace and spent a lot of time there fixing it up. There are flowers, vegetables, fruits and flowers. Caleb tends to it when she can’t get home, but when she is back she spends a lot of her time there. We can neither confirm nor deny that it is magical. 

The owner’s suite is on the main level, toward the back left of the house (looks out over the back yard). It used to be their parent’s room, obviously it’s Caleb’s now. He didn’t sleep there until he had completely gutted and redone the place, opting to stay in his childhood bedroom for the first few years. 

There are two staircases, one from the kitchen area and one from the foyer. When you take the stairs from the foyer, you’ll come to the second floor landing. Continue straight on the landing and you come to Cora’s room. It was smaller, but in the remodel he gave her more space and her own bathroom (the dream), wanting her to always have a comfortable space to call home. 

Beside Cora’s room is a common area with built in bookshelves, a fireplace. This is Caleb’s favorite place. Cora’s too. They both spend a lot of time here reading. 

There are two additional bedrooms upstairs, one that Caleb uses for an office for his business.

Useless Headcanon #89345 | A Warren Sibling Thing™

Cora has nightmares. They’re worse when she’s stressed or lonely or sad - she tosses, she turns, she wakes up crying and shaking uncontrollably. They started when her mom died, and only got worse through the years. She has had the occasional night terror. They’re not as bad when she has someone in bed with her (hmm, I wonder if that’s related at all to her penchant for sleeping around...).  Point being, Caleb had to figure it the fuck out. Martin would only exacerbate them by yelling or punishing her (for dreaming, when I tell you he was the worst...). Mostly it meant Caleb sitting up with her, ‘keeping watch’ if you will (and now you have to consider if that has anything to do with why he doesn’t sleep so much...), reading to her, etc. when she was going through a rough patch. Not an every night thing, but frequent enough, especially when Martin was sick and toward the end of his life.  Caleb started playing guitar to her when he was learning, and it... worked. They don’t know why, they don’t care to know why (are all of my muses made of magic in some subtle way? who knows??), but if he plays guitart for a little while for her, it will knock her out, and keep her there.  So when she went to college, they knew they’d have to do something, right? Or Caleb did. Cora didn’t bring it up. She would just suffer through it, ya know? Not good enough for her older brother. He took his guitar and recorded some songs for her. They’re not perfect, and the sound quality isn’t the best, but she took them to school with her, and they’re one of her most prized “possessions”. He re-recorded some of them more recently and they live in her phone, and they still work their magic while she’s on the road today.

Useless Headcanon #90987567 | Souvenirs for Caleb 

It’s a thing, y’know - you travel somewhere new, and you feel an impulse to bring a piece of it home with you. Memories, but also gifts for those who didn’t get to go, to let them know you thought of them while you were gone. Which is great, when you’re getting things for people who like things. Caleb decidedly does not like things so magnets or shirts or mugs? Options, but they always ended up in boxes for the local thrift shop. So Cora started carrying a disposable camera with her. Cora finds a bridge in every place she goes, and takes a photo for him. Because Caleb doesn’t like things but he does like bridges. 

She mails him the camera when she’s out of photos, and he gets them developed, then the next time she comes for a visit, she labels them for him and tells him all about her adventures. 

They both love it. It’s their thing.

Useless Headcanon #4908 | The Warrens Take In Strays Really, this is a Cora thing, and a trait she very much inherited straight from Alice, but both of them are primed and ready to take in a stray at the drop of a hat. There’s an abandoned Cabin in Alston that became somewhat of a clubhouse for the Warrens and Fitzgeralds growing up, and Cora used it as a hiding spot for any injured animals she might find since she couldn’t take them home. Stray dog, stray cat, stray friend/human, doesn’t matter. If there’s something living that doesn’t have a home? Cora in particular feels a strong need to nurture it. Call it overcompensating, but she just calls it extra love to give.  It’s actually a habit of hers that Caleb is trying to curb just a little, at least in regard to other humans cause he doesn’t want her getting hurt.

Useless Headcanon #39088098 | Touch Touch Touch

Cora loves to touch. She loves physical contact. Hand holding, arm touches, thigh touches, neck touches. Ugh. Touches. She loves touching people she cares about, even her friends, just enjoys feeling connected to people in that way.  She also loves being touched. Especially in public. If she’s ‘your girl’, then touch her, show her off, wear her like arm candy and be proud of her. Always hold her hand, touch her lower back, put your arm around her. Just don’t touch her tummy. She does not like having her stomach touched. Nine times out of ten she will shove your hand away if you do.

Useless Headcanon #873468237 | What Does Cora Warren Do? 

Great question, no one! Thank you for asking! I’ll tell you! In her main verse Cora works as a travel writer - it combines her two great loves. Travel and Writing. She freelances, picks up work where she can, isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. She prefers her freedom over anything or anyone, and she’ll do what she has to in order to secure it.  She does have a dirty lilttle secret - Caleb thought she had partial scholarships in school. Which, she did technically win a couple of scholarships that covered the cost of textbooks, but... In all actuality she had sugar daddies. A rotation of older men with whom she had arrangements. While other students were out partying, she’d be at a restaurant humoring a humorless old man, flirting and charming her way through it, and by the end of the night? Well, she’d leave with a deposit in her account and the bills handled for a little while.  Now I won’t claim to say she got wealthy by any means, but when you’re good at that kind of thing? (Which she undeniably is) You can make a living. When she graduated college, she had a decent savings account. This nest egg was only enhanced when one of her ‘boyfriends’ - a very lonely, very sad man who had actually been one of her professors - passed away. She had been out of school for a couple of years, had swung back down to Virginia to see him a couple of times, but nothing crazy, no pattern to it. They’d built what you could call a friendship underneath all of the companionship, and well... pain recognized pain, and they had some unspoken things in common, she figured. I digress, the point is, he passed away and she got a call from an attorney. She attended the funeral (one of a handful of people), and after was asked to go downtown for the reading of the will. He hadn’t done anything crazy like leave it all to her (he had extended family and debts to settle and the like after all), but he left her a good chunk of money. This money is another secret. She’s never told anyone about it, it sits in an account accruing interest, and she only takes from it when she needs it. It’s nice, though, to know in the back of your head that you’re taken care of.  She also has a passion project that she works on wherever she is - she loves people, she loves getting to know strangers, asking them about their lives. And if they agree to it, she takes notes or records their chats on her phone to transcribe later. Cora doesn’t have a plan for all of these stories yet, but at this point she has hundreds of them, and they’re the thing she’s the proudest of. It’s her favorite part of traveling.

It’s just a little bit of cosmic fuckery (the technical term) that Caleb heavily favors Martin in appearance, and that Cora is the spitting image of Alice.

Also to piggyback off of the vibe check because I forgot to mention:

Both Caleb and Cora are convinced they will die alone. Which is dramatic as fuck, but to be a Warren is to be a dash dramatic.

And Caleb, where he stands in most verses, in his early thirties, has never had a real relationship. He has hookups, but never a girlfriend or anything serious. He’s a romantic, sure, but he’s not gonna be like Martin, and it’s easier to avoid romance than it is to fall in love and let it fuck you up.

sleeping habits

Cora: Averages roughly 4.5-5 hours a night, longer if it’s been a long travel day. 8 if she has a decent org*sm (or ten).  Side sleeper, curled up in a ball with a pillow.  Caleb: Averages 3-4 hours a night. He likes night better than day, so he prefers to keep his personal hours then. Back sleeper, arm across his stomach, other behind his head.  Marigold: 8-9 hours, without fail, though it depends on her schedule if she sleeps during the day or night. She prefers to live her best life at night. On her belly, starfish style. Good luck sharing a bed with her.  Seth: 6-7 hours. Wakes up early every morning to workout first thing. Doesn’t dream. Side sleeper.
