has anyone ever written the crack fic where dumbledore does hire voldemort as dada professor and then voldemort ends up being so burdened by the insane course load (and terrible pay) that he ends up postponing his world domination plans a few years over and over and over and over until they’re only a fleeting thought he sometimes reminisces on with the classic when i was your age and it’s always met with sure grandpa let’s get you back to bed

You know how people say Harry and Draco suffered the same? I don’t like that I actually like the concept of them being complete opposite.

Like we know Draco is. Rich spoiled pureblood who from a very young age knew where he belonged, who he represented and what he wanted.

Unlike Harry who grew with nothing of that, not even a single friend.

Even the headcaon of snape being Draco godfather is like a slap to Harry’s face, like not only is this kid experiencing parental love but his godfather is present and cares for him to the point of putting himself in deaths arms to protect him, and maybe to be a little angsty Harry is jealous, because the first thing his godfather did was go after the murder instead of taking care and making sure he’s ok and keeping him with him instead of letting rage get the best of him and getting himself in Azkaban.

Moral of my babbling is, I love those panels, the comparisons and envy, for even Draco sometimes envy Harry for things Harry wouldn’t even consider a pleasing.

Oh believe me, as a thriving Draco fan, I’ve seen that claim many times before. Though I gotta say, I may be a fan of Draco, but I am a DEFENDER of my boy Potter. 🙏🏼

I don’t believe their upbringing or trauma is in any way comparable. Draco’s issue is that he was misguided and was pretty much primed to hate muggleborns. A lot of people like to say “oh but Sirius was raised in the same way and he didn’t turn out like Draco” as a way to say there’s no reason to sympathise with Draco, but the difference between him and Sirius is that Draco was loved. His family adored him, he was spoiled rotten and his parents would kill for him, so he would obviously look up to them and share their beliefs. Sirius, on the other hand, hated his parents and was abused by his mother (and his father, I reckon his father was rather negligent, which is a form of abuse), so he definitely took it upon himself to position himself as far away from their beliefs and opinions as he could. Again, there’s no excuse for being a blood-prejudiced hoe like Draco, but I don’t think it’s wrong to say “hey, maybe if his loving parents were actually good people and didn’t believe in pureblood supremacy, he could’ve lived a regular life and became a better person.” Anywayyy sorry for getting off-topic but it’s probs been like 2 years since I talked about Draco on this blog 💀 I feel like only my old followers know how much I love him because of how rarely I talk about him now lmao.

Back to the main point, I also agree with you, I just enjoy the idea of Draco and Harry being opposites whilst sharing similar parallels but being too blind in each other’s hatred to ever realise it. I can see some similarities between them, but let’s face it, they’re more opposites than they are twins.

That’s true ig 😭 I honestly have mixed feelings on the idea of Snape being Draco’s godfather, I personally believe it kinda ruins their relationship, bc I think Snape cared for Draco simply because 1. he (Draco) was the son of someone who took Severus under his wing, and it was Sev’s way of expressing gratitude 2. he saw how misguided Draco was and, considering how misguided Sev was at Draco’s age, he felt obligated to protect and assist him [+ Draco pretty much had no one in HBP; his father was in Azkaban, his mother was at home, and Crabbe and Goyle were no good. He lacked a parental figure in his life who could point him in the right direction. Severus also never had that when he was growing up, so I can’t help but think that Severus, as an adult and a Professor, wanted to be there for Draco and saw a part of himself in him because he knew what it felt like to have no one]. And it honestly just seems like a cliche trope, but I also like imagining a scenario where Lucius asks Severus to be Draco’s godfather and Sev is so moved by the offer that he couldn’t even bring himself to respond 🥹

1. Ginny Weasley and the Chamber of Secrets by @its-nanse

Gen. Teen and up audience. There is a warning for graphic depiction of violence.

Haunting, unsettling, disturbing!! It would be a crime to not start this list with Nanse's graphic novel following Ginny's first year. Their art is so evocative - appropriately colourful or claustrophobic, depending on the scene. The illustration of the moment with roosters or Ginny in the Chamber stuck with me. I still think about it.

2. As Moments Do by @thecat-isblogging-blog

Gen. WIP.

As Moments Do is a canon compliant journey of Remus Lupin from OOTP to HBP. The first three chapters focus on set up of the Order, first full moon in Grimmauld and the first mission. Cat's art focuses on a moment with Sirius during the full moon that lives in my head rent free - Sirius imposing his will on Remus during the full moon, Remus lashing out and the way they negotiate back to their dynamic is just... gorgeous and I am forever in awe. 3. Home for Christmas by @thecat-isblogging-blog

Home for Christmas is a pre-canon - a snapshot of teenage Remus, living with simmering tension with his parents, both of whom love Remus deeply but are unable to render it in a way that reaches Remus, beaten down by his status as a werewolf. Cat illustrated a very moment - Remus noticing the statue of Gelert the Hound, the wolf slayer. It is a motif that follows him through the story, and Cat also masterfully ties it with his feelings about Sirius post prank: underlying fear and resentment that he suppresses. Here is the illustration.

Summary:

It’s the Christmas holidays, and like every year, Remus goes home to spend it with his parents. But there’s nothing worse than feeling homesick when you’re already home.

4. I must have done something good by @yletylyf

Sirius x Severus. Explicit.

We all needed a Sirius and Severus finding comfort in each other at their best friend's wedding and Lety, as usual, delivered. @tricksterringmaster illustrated a particular striking moment in this fic - I am going to let their work speak here. Here is the art.

omg the fact that you don't hate Dumbledore with every fiber of your being is a breath of fresh air.

I see so many people bashing on him and acting like he is the worst character when voldemort and snape are literally right there. Yeah, he wasn't perfect, but like, he isn't responsible for every bad thing to have happened in the wizarding world, and to say that he is isn't accurate in the slightest.

I saw a short on youtube that showed all the characters in Harry Potter who had ever died, and said Dumbledore was the reason they all died, which is like.... again, not accurate.

People talk about how "he raised all of these characters to die" as if he saw James, Sirius, Remus, Peter, Snape, Lily, Tonks, and everyone else in the mauraders fandom at age 12 and was like, "Yeah I'm totally going to raise these guys up only to make them join my secret society so I can have them all die!!:)" He never forced any of them into doing anything. Arguably, the only one he knew would die was Harry, and it wasn't like he was jumping for joy at that prospect. There are dozens of moments and actions he took to prevent the inevitable for as long as possible. There's literally an entire chapter in OOTP when he talks about his desire to do just that. And in HBP, he and Harry have an entire conversation about the fact that Harry would want to kill Voldemort regardless of whether he knew the prophecy or not.

I feel like people just want to blame Dumbledore for everything, which drives me insane because it erases the blame and mistakes of the people actually responsible for major events.

I know this was long, I'm sorry, haha. I just am so tired of seeing so much Dumbledore hate. Again, he isn't a perfect character in the slightest. But to claim that he's the worst character in the series is just plain stupid.

I'm really happy to find people who see what a big pile of bs Dumbledore bashing is...they can't even find a decent argument, too busy playing the blame game....what they don't realize is that blaming everything on Dumbledore undermines or downright denies the great sacrifices these people made and it was their decision to risk their lives for the good fight...but no, they were just Dumbledore's pawns and brainwashed to fight for him...I think they have the names mixed up, because it all sounds like Voldemort and his Death Eaters to me...And what exactly was Dumbledore trying to gain, he literally died..and not by accident...he carefully planed his death to get the most out of it in their favour, so he wasn't after the power and control...if he was, he could have had that before Voldemort wasn't even in the picture

And you have already said everything else I have to say on this matter..I'd just like to add one thing :

If anyone's wondering why people are sending me asks about Dumbledore and if I've turned into a Dumbledore's man...my answer is - I'm a ‘Dumbledore’s man through and through’...‘Glad we straightened that out.’

When I used to post on LJ I would often have a post called Tidbits, that is what I think today's post will be like. A lot of unrelated things, but then again some are. Hope you enjoy.

What I'm Reading:

The Light More Beautiful by @firethesound. It's 4 chapters and around 81K. I'm close to finishing chapter 3 and will do so later tonight along with the last chapter. Family and house responsibilities intruded on my fandom fun. LOL I'm so enjoying the story. I really really like reading and writing about older H/D (meaning not Hogwarts or 8th year). Here, I think they're in there late 20's. The fic is canon divergent at some point in HBP where a potion accident happens that effects them greatly, however, the main part of the story takes place 13 years later.

Draco has been trained as an Auror in the US and specializes in creating spying instruments and other things that help Aurors (think of Q in James Bond). Harry is training Aurors since he was waylaid by an injury, which I've yet to discover what happened to him. Draco returns to the UK to find out Pots and Pans (I love this so much), who are Harry and Pansy are best buds. And Draco also returns with his huge crush on Harry fully intact. The interplay between H/D is top notch with lots of sparks, hilarious banter, but also soft moments. Truly lovely. Oh and the acronyms!!! Highly recommend! Can't wait to finish it tonight.

2. The the @thedrarrylibrarian hosts Happy Hour on Fridays with friends of the Library. I'll do a separate post later about @thedrarrylibrarian because they're awesome! But what caught my eye is their hosting @phdmama. Usually, the person they select recs a story that they love that hasn't gotten much play. @phdmama, however, chose to discuss re-reads. This is the way she so artfully stated her reasoning, "Reading, quite literally, has saved my life and transformed it. So I thought I’d highlight of few of those fics that have impacted me so profoundly. These fics are comfort food for my brain. These are fics I come back to, over and over and over again. They live in my soul." And I nodded my head reading her choices. I hope you check out the post and her selections.

What crossed my mind while reading the post was that there are fics that are in my top 10 favs, that I've only read once. I call them my Saving Private Ryan fics. Seeing that movie was an experience, one I'll never forget, but I don't think my heart could handle a second time. I put Frayach's The Price We Pay for Wings in this category. I will never understand how that fic is only 13K. It was written in 2007 for hd_holidays, and remains one of the most beautifully written h/d stories bar none.

For Fan Fair, @phoenixacid heavily promotes commenting on Fair's fics, artwork, and podfics. There is a contest where you are put in a group of random folks who've asked to be involved. And the groups compete against each other for points. Points are given for comments and more points for a rec. So I'm not the only one commenting on all the fics. LOL @caroll-in and I were on the same team last year, I don't think that will happen again. We killed the competition!

So as I mentioned above, I hadn't re-read The Price We Pay for Wings, but when I went to get the link, I discovered something I didn't know existed...a sequel. I didn't know that Frayach had written one, I had left fandom just before. A Flame Undampened is as beautiful as the first, though I do think I could and will read it again. Scorpius had loved and is loved. And that candle, yep, it's a symbol. The fic is around 5K and was written in 2012 in honor of the Newton, CT slaying of innocents.

Oh FFS how can The Price only have 46 comments and Flame 25 ?????? sorry, just got to me. This is a subject for a later blog. :)

Oh I am an Indian too! And I agree with the fact that Lord Shiv infact gives all of us energy. I am neither too old, nor too young, like in my early teenage era and God had proved that he is with me.

I don't think Ron is done wrong by JKR. In DH, the whole point of him leaving was to show what the golden trio is without Ron.

I am glad things are working out for you in real life.

About Ron done wrong by JKR. I meant it in a way that Ron in initial books was a strategic thinker who came up with solutions and really had a leg to stand on among the trio. In fact it was Hermione who came out as odd one out with how she opposed the other two on every step.

Then don't know what weird sort of women empowerment came in this woman's mind that she made Hermine as someone who is pretty close to dark grey character if we see her in different light. Trapping Rita skeeter in a jar, writing permanent word on Marietta edgecomb's forehead, throwing umbitch to cenataurs. Like yes she appeared cool girl whose transformation was from a nerdy rule following girl to the no. one rule breaker among golden trio.

But with how much Hermione stood out. Ron began to fade as a normal average friend. Rather than the cunning sweet guy we were introduced to.

I am not saying that Harry Or Hermione viewed him as less but i think that just so that the titular character can shine and the female lead can appear larger than life, Ron's character had to take a step back. That was sad. He is my favorite among golden trio.

The problem with Harry calling Remus as uncle is that till the end of books, Harry was still calling him by his surname. He didn't even felt comfortable to call him by his name. Let alone calling him an uncle.

Of course, you do you. But i cringe everytime Remus is shown in familial light to Harry when not once he assumed the role of an uncle. In poa, he was his teacher., in gof he was missing, in ootp he was James and Sirius's friend, in hbp he was again missing for most part, Harry even mentions that he expected to receive a letter from Remus now that Sirius is gone. I mean if he was really an uncle figure then it is his responsibility to check on a grieving 16 year old kid. in DH Harry becomes Remus's equal by assuming the role of the hope of the order. The guy Dumbledore told all order members to trust in and follow the lead of. Harry also sets Remus straight on being an idiot about tonks and teddy. Remus goes on to name Harry as the godfather. Again an indirect proof that Remus considers a 17 year old kid capable enough to take care of his kid in case he and tonks dies. Like Remus never gave Harry that space to be a kid.

I suppose I am okay with Hinny but I do not go to search for Harry centric fics where Romance is involved because I have seen that guy from age 11 and I am honestly not interested in sordid details of his love life. 😂

I have an exception to it though.- fics which involves Harry going back in time and dating Sirius. 😇😇😇

About my view on platonic friendship. Of course I support them. If I read a story with strong bond between friends, I feel at home. In HP world, the bromance between Harry and Ron. And Sirius and James is canonical. They both are like ride Or die sort of duos. I love them.

Infact if I keep my romantic prongsfoot heart on the side fir a minute, I love the stories in which Sirius is paired with some other character ( anyone but lupin) and James acts as a wingman or gives Sirius some tips on how to be in a relationship etc.

I hate stories in which best friends are kept aside to focus on the couple. Like no. That person is gonna be a part of all ups and downs kr the protagonist. He will know all sordid details as quickly as possible.

One of the many reasons as to why I hate wolfstar is that they have to water down Sirius and james's bond so that the couple looks picture perfect. I mean it will be a sad story if Remus competes with James in being the no. 1 person in Sirius's life and looses.

Like for James post marriage, lily and Harry took priority over Sirius. So fir me the ideal person for Sirius will be the one who becomes Sirius's no. 1 despite James being right there. Without compromising the prongsfoot platonic love and dependence on each other.

I have yet to find such story. But fingers crossed. Life is still long 😅

i know i make fun of regulus fans but just taking a moment to appreciate how absolutely terrifying it must’ve been for him, as such a young boy, to die alone in that cave. this chapter with dumbledore drinking the potion is as heart wrenching as ever. and he’s one of the cleverest + most powerful characters in the book. imagine doing this at the age of 17, fuck. regulus was brave in his own weird way, huh! it’s also so interesting to me that he comes from a house that literally beheaded house elves when they got old but refused to let kreacher drink the poison instead of him.

much to think about the black brothers and the moralities they developed in their home environment…

Heyy I´m curious when the first time was you read the harry potter series and if your feelings about them has changed a lot since then. Like were you immediately so invested in the Marauders or did you only get interested in them later?

so I was actually blessed enough to have my mom read HP to me and my siblings every night when I was a kid, I think we started when I was 5? and then, every night without fail, we’d get through a few chapters. It’s one of my favorite memories ngl. I remember when HBP and DH came out!

SO - I did not get immediately attached to the Marauders because I was so attached to Harry (and Ginny LOL og Hinny shipper right here), but I distinctly remember being so, so upset that his parents had died. I never got over that. I looked for mentions of them in every chapter, and I remember that I snuck a glance ahead in DH and happened to read about a line of the scene when they walk him to Voldemort, and I thought they’d been brought back to life 🥺 imagine my disappointment LOL. That followed me up through now; hence why I write They Lived AUs 😌

I became interested (obsessed?) with the Marauders after my first reread, back in 2012. I couldn’t get over how there was this whole world we never got to see, that looked SO fascinating and layered. And then, one random day in September of last year, I picked up the first HP book to casually read, and it became a whooole new obsession! One that led to fic writing and this blog!

HP was my first literary love, and I will always hold it in my heart for that reason, but my feelings about it have gotten a lot more complex as I’ve gotten older (duh). I’m able to place the story into my larger understanding of what literature does, and what purpose it serves, and have spent a lot of time reckoning with what I think JKR did/did not do effectively with the story’s message.

I mean, I obviously do still love it tho - I run a fanfiction account and a blog for it 😅

In her new interview for Elle Emma admitted something that correlates a tweet from a witness from in July 2011 on location filming Perks of being a Wallflower From snitchseeker.com May 2014, "Among her exploits: She dated a costar Johnny Simmons, and she broke into a swimming pool at 3 A.M. "It was at a hotel," she reports happily. "It had a gate around it. My friends turned around and basically, I was gone. And the next thing they saw was me seven feet up in the air, scaling this fence." This, apparently, is not as out of character as we might suppose. Watson says coyly: "I shouldn’t be able to get away with what I’m getting away with." Here is the tweet from July 2011 and here is a POST I originally posted it in at the time "@_MarieChristine $*MarieChristine; Saw @EmWatson get so drunk that she got naked n climbed the fence to go into the swimming pool at my friend's hotel......http://twitter.com/#!/_MarieChristine." So it was true. I'm not posting the quotes here (I'll link the posts with them below) but to generalize this is a girl that claims to be shy and doesn’t like to party and doesn’t drink to have a good time because it makes her really sleepy and she’s just so boring she says and blah, blah blah. She sucks people in with these statements are herself that makes people like her. It's not just about drinking and getting drunk but everything. Nothing about her is genuine in any shape or form. She is a fraud.

In a recent interview for Wonderland Magazine Emma admitted like she always has which has been one big lie that she's boring and doesn't like being the center of attention.

So in her Wonderland magazine Emma says she shy, socially awkward and a introverted person. For some reason I don't believe her. There are certain things about her that leads me to believe she is not shy or the least bit introverted. The first part of this question asked her straight out as she ever wanted to go off the rails and get drunk and she talked about getting a tattoo but never fully answered that question. The follow up question which is split below in two parts was, "But you’re not as puritanical as that, Emma" So let's look at some thing 1.) For years Emma has said she was shy. From topcelebrityheadlines.com June 2011, "I’m shy." From zimbio.com May 2011, "It's really hard to have a love story for me. I'm a famous actress. And I'm shy." From digitalspy.com October 2010, "Actually, I'm quite shy. I've never liked attention." From iheartwatson.net June 2011 “I still feel shy, but I feel more like I can accept it.” Her come hither looks which I limited for space reasons. There are many and I left out new ones from the Noah premiere. This is not a trait of shy and introverted people.

I doubt a truly shy and introverted people are going to say they'll strip to gain approval for anything. From mtv.com November 2010 (NYC Deathly Hallows) When we caught up with Watson just before she ducked into the theater, we informed her that 90 percent of our viewers had given her wardrobe choice — a specially made Calvin Klein gown — an enthusiastic thumbs-up in an MTV News online poll "Awww, really? Wow, that's such a high percentage!" she exclaimed. "Wow, I aced it, obviously. That's great." While 90 percent is definitely a high number, what might she do in order to get the full 100 percent of viewers' approval? "I don't know, take it off?" she quipped. Then there is her modeling which doesn't strike me as someone that is shy or introverted.

So shy and introverted she can tell a radio host some guy thinks she looks good naked From nudography.com 2008 'Harry Potter' film actress Emma Watson has said she would do a nude scene in a future film or stage role if the script called for it. Watson got on the topic of getting naked on BBC's Live Five radio "I think it's wonderful that Daniel is willing to be so brave for his craft. Then there is her attention seeking along with her sultry poses and outfits she sometimes wears. Below is a series of photos from the Cannes for TBR. Everyone is walking up the steps arm and arm but Emma stops to grab the spotlight. Once she takes the arm of a cast mate she can't stop turning around smiling, giggling and waving. Once she gets to the top she hooting and hollering and then blows a series of kisses as her cast mates walk inside. This is not someone that is shy and introverted.

Claiming she wished she did more naughty things is yet another example of what a shy and introverted person would not say. From harrypotterfan.net Nov 2010, "I wished I’d done more naughty things. Three months ago I cut my hair and at that moment I felt I became a woman. I’m ready to start taking risks. I feel less girlish than ever." ... cough ... cough... From emma-watson.net September 2013 (GQ awards), “Given the perilousness in the journey from child star to adult, any award with ‘Woman’ in the title is frankly a relief!” <---- thought she, "I’ve never been in a terrible rush to be seen as a woman.” Then there is the choices of some of her outfits. If you're shy and introverted you're not going to show some flesh and you're certainly not going to show some flesh on TV or at a strip club. The last thing you want to do is draw attention to yourself. You'd be more than happy to dress modestly. There are just a few and I limited them for space reason as well. I left out her recent plunging neckline outfit from the Noah premiere in Madrid and many others like her famed 2009 HBP premiere wardrobe malfunction outfit.

From Elle magazine April 2011 iheartwatson.net, "Does having short hair make you dress differently? ’I think it’s made me bolder in my fashion choices. It’s allowed me to dress more sexily.’” cough ... cough... From omg.yahoo.com W magazine May 2013, “I’ve never wanted to grow up too fast: I wanted to wear a sports bra until I was 22! The allure of being sexy never really held any excitement for me. I’ve never been in a terrible rush to be seen as a woman.” Never heard of a shy and introverted person want o dress more sexually because of a haircut. Then there is her constant blowing of kisses which she does a lot of which all the classic pin ups like Marilyn Monroe ands other used to do. I guess it has nothing to do with shyness but introverted people are not going to go around blowing kisses at people or into the camera.

Then there are moments like this. Who does this? Shy and introverted? I think not. This is begging for attention and just plain weird.

Blowing kisses, posing, giving that sultry look and just enjoying all the attention is not the trait of a shy and introverted person.

Now the only thing I believe her on is the socially awkward part.

Now to the second part of that quote 2.) "At a big party, I’m like Bambie in the headlights. It’s too much stimulation for me, which is why I end up going to the bathroom! I need time outs! You’ve seen me at parties, Derek. I get anxious. I’m terrible at small talk and I have a ridiculously short attention span." I doubt this is true. She loves to be the center of attention on red carpets. She loves the attention. So why would parties be any different? At Coachella (bottom left photo) she was moshing at some points on stage.

This video shows her dancing on stage but there is another I lost of a video shooting down from the stage over Emma's head and you can see she's in plain view of the thousands in attendance. When I find it I'll post it. Shy and introverted people that can't take all the stimulation like she says would not put themselves out there amongst strangers and onlookers. If so, what kind of shy and introverted person is that? So which is the truth and which is the lie?  So Sam in Perks and Nicki in TBR were complicated roles that she ended up leaving two Universities for? How about her small role in MWWM that took her a little over a week to film?

Harry and The Dursleys: Examining His Response to his Abusers

This is a musing/rambling, because I have been rereading and I have been noticing shifts in how Harry responds to the Dursleys. It is largely a companion piece that expands the ideas that I touch upon in my meta Deconstructing Harry , and it is to underline how Harry was shaped by surviving and living in an abusive household, one that specifically posits the "golden child vs scapegoat" dynamic in the worst possible way. I have been doing a reread and I have a lot of thoughts!

Finding Safety

Harry's relationship with his abusers is quite understandably, fragmented. He is used to their neglect ("the house held no other sign another boy lived there") and prefers to stay out of their way, and he is used to being the scapegoat to Dudley's golden child. The stark difference in how the Dursleys treat Dudley vs himself contributes to the very little sense of self Harry begins the series with. This, of course, changes when he is removed from their presence and Hogwarts, specifically Ron and Hermione offer him the safety that is required for him to develop beyond his constant survival mode.

What was interesting to me beyond him being used to their neglect is that....at least in the first two books of the series, he wants their attention. He attempts at connection with his abusers ( he tells them about the dream with flying motorbike, he considers waking Dudley up at the hut before his birthday - to annoy him i.e just to have his attention, when Uncle Vernon says "now we know today is an important day" in CoS on Harry's birthday, Harry actually looks up, "hardly daring to believe it").

Why does he do this? Harry has been constantly told - repeatedly consciously and unconsciously that he is a burden on the Dursleys. So he copes - spotting danger ("Harry didn't look it but he was very fast") and evading, not draw attention to himself unless necessary, or trying to maintain a relationship with them in an effort for both need for connection - because they are all he has at the moment and he is a lonely boy, and to try and be safe from complete abandonment.

His abandonment issues inform both his aversion to conflict in personal relationships ( I talk about it in my meta about his relationship with conflict and evolution of his dynamic with Ron and Hermione here) as well as his interesting ambivalence to Ron and Hermione's budding romance in later books ("It wasn't as though he was surprised - but he wasn't sure how he felt about it .. ()...Would he be shut out for good?)

Ease With Violent Contact

There are plenty of implications of physical abuse Harry suffers throughout the series, referred to in the narrative in offhand ways ("You need more than good sense to liase with Uncle. A good sense of when to duck more like" in OOTP, "Long experience had told Harry it is best to stay out of Uncle Vernon's arms reach" in HBP) and we see instances of Vernon threatening him ( Uncle Vernon advanced on him with first raised. "You'll get the stuffing knocked out of you, won't you?" in POA, and his promise to "flay Harry within inch of his life" in beginning chapters of CoS after Dobby crashed the pudding).

Reading Marauders Dynamics in SWM

The fact that SWM happened after the werewolf prank lends an interesting colour to the dynamics we see in text.

We'd like to start with the two differing ways Remus responded to werewolf jokes. Number one:

Did you like question ten, Moony?' asked Sirius as they emerged into the Entrance Hall.

'Loved it, said Lupin briskly. 'Give five signs that identify the werewolf.Excellent question.'

'D'you think you managed to get all the signs?' said James in tones of mock concern.

'Think I did,' said Lupin seriously, as they joined the crowd thronging around the front doors eager to get out into the sunlit grounds. 'One: he's sitting on my chair. Two: he's wearing my clothes. Three: his name's Remus Lupin.'

Wormtail was the only one who didn't laugh.

To

I'm bored,' said Sirius. 'Wish it was full moon.'

'You might,' said Lupin darkly from behind his book. 'We've still got Transfiguration, if you're bored you could test me. Here ...' and he held out his book.

In the first instance, Remus feeds into the werewolf joke and laughs at his own dry joke - and in the second instance, he reacts slightly negatively.

We know from what Remus says in HBP that he is not averse to these jokes. He laughs when Harry says fiercely, "But you are normal - you've just got a problem!". Remus says in nostalgia-tinted affection, "Sometimes you remind me a lot of James. He called it my 'furry little problem' in company. Many people were under the impression I owned a badly behaved rabbit."

The difference, especially given the light of what happened in the werewolf prank (James saves Snape and by extension Remus, Sirius endangers him), is the presence of James. (Reference our meta here as to understand why he sees James and Sirius as his protectors in wolf form, which James unconsciously still fulfills here)

Remus feeds into the joke when James is around, and the moment James is off doing his own thing with the snitch, Sirius' own reference is met slightly passive aggressively. Remus is simultaneously telling Sirius his boundary is being crossed while redirecting his boredom somewhere else (hey, test me?).

[An important addition by @dragonlordette here: The dark "you might" response could be seen as Remus remembering the prank. The first joke is a joke among friends about his condition, the second one is reminder that Sirius still doesn't truly grasp how much danger he put Remus in during the prank. Hence "you might" - like, reminders that Sirius Doesn't Get It aren't appreciated the way other jokes are. It serves as a marker of how Remus might feel Sirius has burned him before - he is forgiven, and still loved, but it's not forgotten. Whereas the way he talks about James forever demonstrates that he clearly feels James never let him down.]

Cat goes further to describe Remus handing the book to Sirius as "a handout before the other person can respond to the initial negative response". (Remus and his hyper awareness of social situations is underused in fics!)

The third werewolf reference looks very different in the light of POA:

'How thick are you, Wormtail?' said James impatiently. 'You run round with a werewolf once a month--'

'Keep your voice down,' implored Lupin.

Yes, Remus is reacting to his secret, but given he just made the joke about himself being a werewolf ("Three, his name is Remus Lupin"), his primary concern feels like something else. He seems more sensitive about the Animagus secret - it is the same fact he actively hides from Dumbledore in POA, manifesting in one of the worst things he did: not informing Dumbledore of that secret when he still believed Sirius to be a mass murderer.

Here is how he describes it in POA:

"All this year, I have been battling with myself, wondering whether I should tell Dumbledore that Sirius was an Animagus. But I didn't do it. Why? Because I was too cowardly. It would have meant admitting that I'd betrayed his trust while I was at school, admitting that I'd led others along with me. . . and Dumbledore's trust has meant everything to me. He let me into Hogwarts as a boy, and he gave me a job when I have been shunned all my adult life, unable to find paid work because of what I am. And so I convinced myself that Sirius was getting into the school using dark arts he learned from Voldemort, that being an Animagus had nothing to do with it.."

Moving on, it's also interesting that when Sirius declares he is bored, both Remus and James offer ways out.

Remus asks him to test him (which he rejects), while James offers going after Snape (which he accepts). This dynamic establishes Sirius as the instigator - he begins the werewolf joke ("did you like question ten, Moony?"), he is the one who is bored which both James and Remus try to address. However, when it comes to attacking Snape, after Sirius accepts, James takes the lead whereas Sirius falls back on a supporting role.

Peter also is exclusively attached to James through the scene - cheering him on, which James enjoys and doesn't challenge Sirius's disparaging, "Put that away, will you. Before Wormtail wets himself in excitement." (Peter turns pink, and James does put the snitch away with, "If it bothers you" xD)

Essentially, Sirius keeps pushing boundaries (begins werewolf joke, is bored, the prank), but it is James who sets them (joins in the first joke which makes Remus join in without any passive aggressiveness, offers the attack for boredom, and has his actions save his everyone from dire consequences in the prank).

James Potter is essentially the center of the Marauders, who is everyone's favourite. Sirius is James' favourite - which other two are aware of.

My #1 post of 2022

I know it's often debated how powerful Harry is meant to be (aVeRaGe vs ExTraOP) - but I just finished reading Goblet of Fire, where both Barty Crouch Jnr (implied to have struggled with this for years) and Barty Crouch Snr struggle with their Imperius curses (for months, and he is still struggling with it when Harry meets him in the forest).

And yet, Harry throws it off the first time someone tries it on him. And if the spell's strength lies in the power of the caster, Harry throws it off when Voldemort casts it on him. It's not something the book draws attention to as much, but this little feral boy is a force.
