Impetus - Tiefling Swashbuckler Rogue/Champion Fighter Twin of Patience, proud owner of a vorpal rapier, traveller of the planes, stabbed Commander Saturn from Pokémon non-fatally, lover of chaos, definitely killed a deva once

Samit - Vedalken Artillerist Artificer Quiet, well-read, enjoys working on his boat, cares deeply (platonically) for his work partner, works for an inter-planar society to avoid non-natives to any given plane causing trouble

Tommy May - Human (Hexblood) Wild Sorcerer His mama wished for a baby in earshot of a hag, he's a cobbler, the most average man in the world with 20 charisma, once exploded in the mouth of a big ice wyrm, thinks it's normal to pull your teeth out to act like walkie talkies with your friends

Roald Kromsson - Dwarf Battlemaster Fighter Used to be a cleric many decades ago, fell out of faith with his god while on a 'righteous' crusade, prioritises protecting his friends/party members to the point of putting himself in more danger than he should, ostensibly pacifist but once a fight starts his aim is to finish it as efficiently as possible

Achlys - Tiefling (Reborn) Wild Barbarian Contracted to work for the Witchlight Carnival, keeps dying in looney tunes esque accidents and being brought back to finish the length of her contract, isn't entirely aware that she's actually died a bunch of times and thinks she's just really lucky, WILL run head first into a situation

Chiara - Half-elf Necromancer (Dark Urge) Hates her own pain and gets faint at her own blood but doesn't extend this feeling to others, extremely trusting since she doesn't have the memory to shore up her own convictions, doesn't like getting her hands dirty directly, caffeine makes her a different person

Viscera - Human Swords Bard (Dark Urge) Worst woman you've ever met, loves to cause pain and chaos, will fuck your girlfriend, thinks everyone should do whatever they want forever

Alice Murray - Human Knowledge Cleric of the Raven Queen Blind, wanted to be a wizard when she was a kid, was told she wouldn't be able to maintain a spellbook without sight, was taught rituals by a traveling acolyte of the Raven Queen and entered her service in pursuit of knowledge of the arcane, has a raven familiar named Sealladh

Kakra - Khenra Zeal Cleric of Hazoret//Draconic Sorcerer//Beastmaster Ranger (not all at once) From a game where there are various AU versions of her at different times. The constant between them is her connection to her twin brother Atsu. As a cleric, she was one of the few remaining mortals alive on Amonkhet after Bolas' return. As a Sorcerer, she was a fervent follower of the God-Pharaoh. As a Ranger, she died and was Eternalised in lazotep and is discovering her ability to feel again with her soul inexplicably tied once more to her body (her beast companions are all also undead and embalmed).

Ragnarok - Human Scribes Wizard Incredibly dramatic emo boy who thinks he's a warlock. In actuality, his grandmother apprenticed to a tiefling archmage (@enecola's Eternal) and when he, as a child, approached the Cool Magic Fiend and asked her very seriously to grant him arcane power, she gave him a spellbook and a couple of basic lessons. So he thinks he has a book of shadows and a pact with a fiend. But he's in fact a nerdlord with negative charisma.

Sybil Susurrus Rowena Shadow Susu Terracot - Gnome Knowledge Cleric of Mystra/Gunslinger Fighter A very anxious and introverted gnome who ended up the keeper of the party gun and decided to spec into it. She's the kind of lawful neutral who prioritises the lives of her friends over the fate of the world, quietly, but intensely.

Kiaran [surname redacted] - Drow Draconic Sorcerer A daughter of a distant branch of a powerful drow family who prize their bloodline's draconic ancestry and the magic that arises from it. Only the main lines of the family manifest this draconic power, but Kiaran found a magical tome which had been used to seal away the magic of anyone deemed undesirable amongst the family, unlocking her own magic and painting a big target on her back, leading her to escape the underdark. She's a sweet girl but does find it hard not to apply drow morality in the overworld.

PKMN

Jeff Williams Half-Mewtwo half-human freak of science. He was working on the Mewtwo project with Team Rocket (initially my character for him was also Bill the PC guy, but I'm reworking him to be Fully OC Guy), and was one of the donors of human DNA to the project. Similarly to the Bill incident, Mewtwo was supposed to simply be transported, but instead got fused with this poor hapless scientist. He then got trapped in TR labs for some years and experimented on, before breaking free and starting his own Organisation, running it from the basement while refusing to show his face for fear of being seen as a monster.

Jason Mancarella World's soggiest Interpol agent. The child of two very powerful and high-flying Interpol agents who got him into the family business despite him having zero ambition or ability to take the initiative. His partner Pokémon is a Heatmor named Vanessa. He loves the Muppets.

Kelly McCuin Quartermaster with Team Rocket. Got recruited as a teenager. Not fully cackling evil, more the casual selfish kind of nasty that leads to a callousness and lack of introspection into whether her job is worth doing bad stuff in the world. Unabashedly Australian. Best friend is @kranberryjuice's oc Ted from Accounting.

okay magic art time now. they are in the order I thought of them. #5. Colossal Dreadmaw. I'm a basic bitch big fantasy monster enjoyer and Jesper Ejsing is the master of those in my opinion. this whole list could be Jesper Ejsing to be honest, his style just hits for me it's exactly what I picture when I think of "high fantasy". I chose Colossal Dreadmaw specifically one because I find it funny but also because I think it really exemplifies what I like about Jesper Ejsing, namely strong composition, light and color in all the right places, and character/creature designs that feel like exciting glimpses into living stories.

#4. Brilliant Restoration it was a toss up between Brilliant Restoration and Decadent Dragon, two big beautiful Wylie Beckart dragons. Brilliant Restoration barely won simply because a divine serpentine dragon with an underbelly made entirely of hands clasped in prayer is an all time great design choice. not much else to say just superb work from Wylie Beckart as usual.

#3. Hazoret the Fervent Hazoret is one of my favorite magic characters, certainly my favorite magic god, and this art is a significant reason why. something about the more abstract imagery of her mask and the sky behind her contrasted with the realistic rendering of especially the cloth and gold. along with the dramatic composition it feels both like a real grounded scene and something I would absolutely worship for the rest of my life were I to view it myself.

#2. Massacre Wurm this one is simple, the near monochromatic palette contrasted against the pink of the gums making the teeth positively shine makes for a wonderfully horrific monster design that I can't help but get hyped as fuck for every time I see it, especially in card form.

#1. Overcharged Amalgam I got to the end of this list for too fast there are still dozens of cards I would love to include, but perhaps next time they will get their time to shine. anyway Overcharged Amalgam just hits for me. It has it all, badass monster design, dynamic energy, gender envy. It feels like the dramatic climax of a story perfectly encapsulated in one piece. I can't take my eyes off of it and it is utterly, for lack of a better phrase, electrifying. I hope Mike Jordana continues to make many more magic cards in the future because I am in love with them all. only not is that they changed the art in the actual card printing for some reason and it makes the composition shittier, also the lower resolution doesn't do the art justice, so the card unfortunately looks much worse in person.

anyway thanks Jupiter for letting me yap. also I realize now that these all depict giant monsters that wasn't intentional I have interests other than big beasties I swear.

Boros Cars 'n' Stuff drafted by CC, February 2, 2024.

Best record of the night with the 2-1 (5-2) record. My games against this were super tight, with small boards, and neither of getting too far ahead. I skewed heavily in the earlier ideation to "small game" cards, and that showed up in our match.

Toolcraft Exemplar was a beating. World Queller, Angel of Salvation, and Avacyn's Judgment were all impactful and flashy but felt fair. Renegade Freighter was a huge threat. I didn't see Hazoret the Fervent in my match, but I did see ML counter it. Good play!

Thran Power Suit was the sore thumb. It's not a proper artifact payoff, and auras aren't here either. Goodbye.

Lately it's been Hazoret, the Fervent. She's not a powerful commander, but she acts as a shell and an enabler for a lot of really fun and dynamic synergies

So there are more tumblr mtg players than I anticipated, it turns out. What's everyone's favourite commander?

Thoughts on the forgotten ones

Okay, so when Nicol Bolas first went to Amonkhet, there were EIGHT gods. When was done LITERALLY fucking with the lot of them, there were five who stayed themselves.

Yeah, we got...

Oketra the True, goddess of teamwork and shit.

Kefnet the Mindful, god of knowing stuff.

Bontu the Glorified, goddess of ambition (and being an asshole).

Hazoret the Fervent, goddess of Really Meaning It.

Rhonas the Indomitable, god of kicking ass.

But there were three more, who lost their names and functions. The Scarab God, the Scorpion God and the Locust God. What would their purposes have been, had Bolas not lobotomized Amonkhet as a whole? I know Ancient Egyptian mythology pretty well, so I can hazard a few guesses...

Scarabs were associated with creation and renewal, and the cycle of life and death, so the Scarab God probably had a similar job. There's a deity called Khepri who was often depicted with a scarab for a head, and this was what he did. Since Bolas's plan involved disrupting all of that on SO many levels, this particular god had to go.

The Scorpion God had a literal actual counterpart in Ancient Egyptian mythology in the form of Selket the scorpion-goddess of protection. Bolas HAD to get rid of this one just to get anything done.

As to the Locust God? There weren't any deities associated with locusts, but they were generally Really Bad News. So this god was probably associated with destruction. Bolas was gonna wreck Amonkhet himself in the end, so who needs a god of destruction?

Topi’s Daily Card #998:  Hazoret the Fervent

Hazoret is probably the one god that I’ve been thinking of using the most, and for good reason.  While it’s a little rare in EDH to have an empty or near empty hand unless you’re going all out with cards without card draw, Hazoret rewards you with a 5/4 haste body for only three mana.  That last ability though is what makes this a must include into some of my decks, more specifically, Alesha.  Being able to discard cards into your graveyard in order to recur later is a great reason to include her into any reanimator style deck.  While she doesn’t do as much damage as Purphoros, Hazoret still whittles at life totals while helping your deck do what it wants to do, making her a solid choice in a good number of EDH builds.

If I attack with Hazoret, and my opponent, for what ever reason, blocks the Hazoret but before damage causes me to draw a card, Hazoret will be removed from combat and no damage dealt correct?

Incorrect.

Unlike their Theros block counterparts, the Gods of Amonkhet are always creatures. Instead of no longer being creatures when their whims aren’t being catered to, the Gods of Amonkhet instead will simply refuse to attack or block for you. 

This restriction on attacking or blocking is only checked when you would try to attack or block with them. Once Hazoret is attacking or blocking, it doesn’t matter how many cards are in your hand. She’ll remain an attacking or blocking creature until the end of combat unless something else specifically removes her from combat.
