A very well balanced Campbeltown dram, but this Hazelburn lacks the complexity of some Springbanks that we’ve tried. It’s a very good whisky, well made, but not super exciting. Full review on the blog (link in bio).

Hazelburn 9 2007/2016 #16/475 Barolo Cask Matured (57,9 %)

Trippeldestillert Springbank nå, eller Hazelburn, og en tapning som først har ligget på firstfiill bourbonfat, deretter tre år på refill Barolo rødvinsfat. Den ble destillert i juni 2007 og tappet i oktober 2016, og det kom 10 800 flasker.

På nesen: Vanilje og krydder, toffee, litt fersken, stadig mer fruktighet jo lenger den står. Litt mint etter hvert. Smaken var fyldig og oljete, med malt, vanilje, litt kardemomme og muskat. Søt. Avslutningen var søt og middels lang, med honning, vanilje, litt røde druer og et hint av kaffe. Med vann ble nesen litt «grønnere», og det kom til mer estere og et hint av gress og brent sukker. Smaken fikk et lite hint av nøtter, malt, og mer vanilje, mens avslutningen ble litt lenger, med et hint av sjokolade nå.

God, «ren» whisky med en fin vanilje- og maltprofil, der det lille vinhintet på slutten bare er litt krydder, det dominerer ikke (heldigvis, vil jeg si, rødvinsfinisher er ikke noen favoritt her i gården).

While shopping for the previous round, I spotted a couple of Hazelburn bottles and decided to pick the 9 year up for my own collection. Then, I decided to buy it again for this round of Scotch Club. A Campbeltown-centered round was a welcome departure from a streak of Highlands and Speysiders. This also gave us an opportunity to compare two bottles from the same distillery and same release. Notice I have nothing to say about the Glenfiddich. Let’s begin:

Hazelburn 9 Barolo

Campbeltown is a tiny but resilient region. It was in the 70s what Speyside is today. This 9 year from the Hazelburn maltings is incredibly dense and packs a punch. 116 proof, not to be fucked around with. This is complex and up front. A bit of peat. Fruity, and, in my opinion, maritime. I love this scotch for its complexity and price. Under $100, plus the high proof stretches it a bit farther.

Hazelburn 13 Oloroso

Same distillery, different barrel, higher year. This one really lingers on the tongue. We compared this to the Barolo cask: where the Barolo was incredibly dense and up front, and warranted multiple sips to decode, the 13 year Oloroso unfolded over a much longer period of time. This one was easier to drink, and lighter on the burn. Sugary and desert-like, but charred. Lingers like a motherfucker.

Glenfiddich 21 Gran Reserva

I have nothing nice to say about this scotch. Glenfiddich is the Budweiser of single malts. I tried to give it another chance here, but it offered nothing but disappointment. Actually, it offered nothing. This scotch is lacking in flavor. You get some honey sweetness and… that’s it. Might as well drink vodka.

Hazelburn 8 year old Cask Strength for Shinanoya.

Powerful flavor Hazelburn Cask Strength. Fresh grassy. It’s then raw sugar, cacao and elegant chocolate, cereal and gooey ripe fruits aroma. Powerful but elegant fragrance. With smooth mouthfeel, chocolate and intense herb, honey, soy sauce with sugar flavor with intense cloves. Herb and malty finish then chocolate liquor and grassy note, spices and raw sugar remains. Powerful Hazelburn.
