quicktime's best books of 2023 ✨

hello hello i wish to recommend some of the best books i read in 2023 and so i am going to do just that. let's go.

fiction no-no boy by john okada TRULY incredible book about the japanese-american internment. the main character is a 'no-no boy' -- one of the internees who answered no to two questions on loyalty questionnaire administered to nisei males, and were therefore sent to federal prison. it's a really stunning and complicated portrayal of the post-war japanese-american community the girl from the other side by nagabe (manga series) a beautiful, haunting series about a young girl who is cared for by a monster in the wake of some unnamed global tragedy idol burning by rin usami about a girl who dedicates her life to a j-pop idol. it's a really slow, compassionate look at mental illness and obsession, and it really gets idol culture y/n by esther yi similar to idol burning: about a young woman who dedicates her life to a kpop idol. a very strange, also compassionate look at mental illness and obsession as well as a stunning portrayal of idol culture. also includes a lot of magical realism the animals in that country by laura jean mckay a surreal horror novel about a global pandemic which allows people to hear the voices of animals. strange, claustrophobic and amoral. i enjoyed this. nonfiction breathing machine: a memoir of computers by leigh alexander a really lovely look back at the early days of the internet. all the living and the dead by hayley campbell a deeply compassionate and expansive exploration of the death industry. i feel books about this subject can often come across quite dismissive or voyeuristic or edgy -- this one takes its material very seriously the fortune cookie chronicles: adventures in the world of chinese food by jennifer 8. lee an excellent exploration of chinese restaurants in america (and chinese-american food abroad.)

So, Stargate fans, I'm thinking of doing an AU fanfic where Carter was taken as a host instead of Skarra.

And by thinking, I mean there's a good chance I won't.

But, I'd like opinions? Who should replace Carter on SG-1? First, there's Skarra, but I was thinking if putting him on SG-2. Then there's McKay, but he's a bit if a dick early, and he's not military.

Then I'm thinking lieutenant Hayley. Like, just make her older and already finished her training and stuff. Like, brilliant character, top of her class, excellent physical shape. But aragant. Thinks she's better than everyone amd needs to be taken down a peg now and then.

Hayey is where I'm leaning, what do yall think? Should I work on it?
