Movie Day

Today was Watch As Many Movies As Possible Day for me. And I took notes when the mood struck me.

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1

Tom Cruise and his crazy stunts. What the hell...I don't even jump out of bed and he's jumping out of planes. At 60 years of age.

Hayley Atwell. Oh my.

2. Kramer vs. Kramer

Meryl Streep hated (and hates) Dustin Hoffman. Probably helped with the acting.

Jobeth Williams is in this movie. Naked.

70s, 80s, and 90s NYC is in my heart.

The woman gets this kid after leaving the kid in the first place. I dunno. Doesn't seem fair.

3. White Christmas

Bing Crosby. Legend. Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney. Legends.

4. It's A Wonderful Life

George Bailey - born selfless. The dude doesn't think once about what's in it for him. Except for that time, he told his uncle that one of them was going to prison, but it wouldn't be him.

thoughts on peggy carter

i think my biggest issue with peggy carter is marvel is trying to push agendas and pander to audiences as a cop out for formulating a dynamic character. it's obvious she's supposed to be a feminist icon. that's totally cool. i appreciated that as a kid, since i was sick of women being portrayed as weak. the way i see it, peggy suffers from weak portrayal, not portrayal that she's weak.

before the peggy fans comment/reblog, "omg not another stucky blog posting peggy hate. leave her alone!!" i don't hate peggy, I just want a clearer picture of who she is. i enjoyed her in the mcu but i wish marvel would've given her justice within the writing. this isn't hate for hayley atwell either. she did really good in her acting, enough so i watched more movies with her in it intentionally.

peggy always read to me as a half-developed side character -- no matter if she's the main character. my one of my biggest complaints is that she seems to have little to no motive. motive is what drives people and your main character having consistently unclear motives is sloppy writing.

helping steve? sure, she's his commanding officer and she seemed to like him.

"win the war"? well sure, that was a lot of other people's motives in ww2. why did she even join the war anyways? what convinced her to sign up? she didn't have to, she could've done other work. what was so compelling about the war to her?

for the what if episode: why'd she choose to take the super serum?

my point here is: there are too many points where one questions why she did ___ that could have been better defined (esp in the what if series).

marvel can make her much more interesting (and to me appealing) character by not putting her in comparison to steve. they would be forced to solidify her character instead of wimping out and saying "well she's the love interest." I'm not saying that she can't have both a relationship and be a strong woman - many women have/are both. however, when your entire personality depends on your relationship to one person, it's not very healthy or wise.

the concept of marvel pushing for steve and peggy's relationship is fine, that's how romance novels are made. but the lax follow-through on character development removes my interest for the ship. how good romance novels bring interest to each character is by establishing them. they also used peggy as way to pander for chris evans himself - she was an easy way to get steve rogers out of upcoming plot lines. (side note: chris evans is totally justified in not wanting to work for marvel anymore, they just should've handled his character's ending less sloppily)

as for the ship - i would see more value in the steve x peggy ship if i could tell what type of person peggy is. especially when you take away steve. i see value and interest in steve and bucky because, even though bucky was made as a sidekick to steve, he has a strong character. would i want to see him even more fleshed out? yeah, ofc. would i say he's more fleshed out than peggy? yes, because in one movie you can tell who bucky is and why he's doing things. i see why people ship steve and peggy, and I see why people ship steve and bucky. both stances are valid.

i haven't seen it yet nor i do know if i will watch it due to personal time and budget constraints, but i hope that the agent carter series strengthens her character.

ultimately, peggy is the victim of poor and sexist writing.

(note:: this is my personal opinion & analysis, based on the first two cap movies and the what if series. im not speaking for anyone but myself. if you feel like her character is rich enough and you're satisfied by her portrayals, that's great, I just wanted to share my stance. again, i don't hate peggy, I just want a clearer picture of who she is and why she does what she does)

forgot to say i technically loosely started deep space 9 this last week, which is to say i was forced at GUNPOINT to watch like 4-5? episodes. just kidding i was watching with a friend. but since i don't know when i will continue i should say what i thought so far. obviously there are 7 seasons so these are very loose first impressions.

sisko reminds me a lot of holt from brooklyn 99 in his mannerisms and the way he talks, like very calm and rationale in his speech but also very capable of being a little bitch. i like it. his son is just a little boy.

quark is funny i like him. love a guy who just wants to make a quick buck but also....there's a heart in there

idk how to feel about odo so far but it might be bc they haven't really nailed his makeup yet so he looks like hes dying all the time. so far he's a little boring but i know it will get better. also he had the mystique effect on me where i kept being like ah they got me again! those damn shapeshifters

kira seems like a little too similar to ro laren at the moment which i imagine is because of a lack of bajoran characters in star trek up to this point. i can see some differences and i know the further the show goes, the more kira will feel like her own person. i like her so far

o'brien is there which is so funny to have him be such a central and main character i'm so used to him coming up so sporadically. slay king.

overall i like what i've seen so far which obviously is not much but i'm afraid i will forget all of this if i don't say it now. the concept of them being in one stationary location is pretty interesting as well, i'm curious how that will change the structure of the show -- although so far it's been fairly regular. the wormhole stuff is a little odd, and as usual i'm constantly confused on the politics of everything but i have no real complaints

I do! I have a very alliterative name, and it's got some fun family history linked to it from both sides of my family. The only downside is people constantly mispronounce it, hence my usually shortening it to just 'Lena' since people tend to have an easier time with that as it's a bit more common and only 2 syllables.

Excellent comparison for the whole Sharon Carter 'situation' and why Hayley Atwell was dead wrong to react how she did.

Outrageous Fortune.

The actual situation between Cheryl, her daughter Pascal, and her then boyfriend Judd.

Pascal sleeps with Judd while her mom is in jail. And it's not something they think about in depth, it's not something done because they want to hurt Cheryl. And because Judd is actually supposed to be her boyfriend at the time, she's reasonably upset.

Reasonably, she blames Judd more than Pascal and  while upset with her she never goes out of her way to villainize either of them in the end or try to control what they do. You know why? Well, for one, she's a grown adult woman as are they who even when being stubborn and petty, still acts for the most part as a mature adult.

And because Pascal is her daughter who she raised and cares about, more so than some guy she dated despite the fact that she's a hot mess and shared a stillborn with said guy.

A guy who lots of people would write off as being a scumbag, the show actually makes it clear that no one is purely good or bad. It's from 2006 initially, and has more nuance and empathy about actual toxic and trash people than anything I've seen in a long time. Which is saying something because some would say certain aspects are dated and some certainly are but I think they definitely add appropriately within context and the expectation of imperfection.

Anyway.

Pascal. When I saw this event, I was immediately reminded of Sharon Carter and the way Hayley Atwell reacted (despite having no legitimate reason to react that way at all) and how she encouraged an already toxic fandom that was targeting hate and bullying towards people who didn't deserve it over literally nothing and no claim (so basically misogyny over Sharon existing and not being played by her, cause she loved Staron if she got to be Sharon so its not just a Steggy 'entitled to her opinion' thing).

Except the show did something different. It makes it clear they did the wrong thing. It makes it clear they understand this and are sorry for it, but in actuality still have feelings for each other. And Cheryl, being a sometimes reasonable mother first and foremost doesn't encourage people to hate them or bully her daughter or even try to get back with Judd.

She lets them go.

Judd leaves and Pascal goes with, and Cheryl accepts it and moves on because her number one priority isn't whether she gets to be with the guy. It's whether her kids are happy. Which is how a mother or just any good family member would feel about an even remotely similar situation. Or just a good person in general. You can't force someone who has chosen to move on to love you, and more importantly, why would you want to?

And that's something, because we can recognize that Judd and Pascal actually did do something wrong and still got to be humanized in the end, by the person they'd wronged.

But Steve and Sharon never did a single damn thing wrong. Steve never dated her aunt and was single. Sharon pretty much just existed, was a kick ass Agent, and got Steve's attention. But they weren't allowed to breathe let alone be viewed as human within context or not. Emily especially who got interview warranting hate with the encouragement of fans to be nasty and spiteful in Peggy's name, for Hayley Atwell, still continuing.

People got hurt in real life because this woman couldn't accept that Steve wasn't her slave to control, or that he could find love well beyond her just as Peggy was supposed to have done.

Oh, and because she didn't get to play Sharon. With her in a blonde with as Sharon? Staron was perfectly acceptable and 'true love'. But with Emily as Sharon? Hmm.

Unjustifiably obviously biased.

Sharon and Steve were never the problem. Them being together wasn't a problem. Not even Peggy was a problem.

Hayley Atwell. Is the problem.

I started writing a Western ages ago, probably around summer 2022, and it's sort of been my dream to have Bertie Carvel and Tom Burke cast in it. Like, I'm aware they'd be well into their 50s if I worked at a steady pace, got it completed, got a name enough to make it. I also have an alternate headcanon cast of Nicholas Hoult and Daniel Radcliffe. For some reason, I had a dream the other night that it was already completed and came out. Daniel Radcliffe and Tom Burke were the two leads. (Well, technically I have Hayley Atwell as the third lead, as Tom Burke's character's ex-wife/who the best friend in the Western has a raging crush on and I do not have an alternate for her whoops. I STG I had this cast in my head before I knew about Rosmersholm because when I heard about Rosmersholm I was like ARE YOU KIDDING ME THAT IS TOM AND HAYLEY IN THE 1880s.) In dream world, something something the chemistry read with Bertie and Tom was great, but the studio thought Dan would be more marketable (and the chemistry was also pretty good). I'm telling my husband all the details of the dream, and "Obviously Tom is pretty marketable because this is after Furiosa and he's fully A Big Name." I don't think dream!Jessi cared if it was a success or not, because 1. it was already made, and 2. I made it happen. So I GUESS I should get back to writing that Western and actually write the plot and not just 50,000 character bios?

But it's been a while so the plot felt familiar but I'm not sure we have the same ending. It's still a banger of a movie. I'm obsessed with his friend's living room/studio.

Funny and silly, a different take on the stuck repeating the same day over and over trope. It's a refreshing romcom when we have become so used to whatever is on Netflix.

It's over two hours long when it didn't really need to go over the 90-minute mark. It's like it's a tv season compressed into a movie, so we get some good moments and lots of plot and storylines that it would only work on a weekly 20-minute thing. I just spaced out for a good half an hour after the not-honeymoon.

Sex and the City 2 (2010)

It’s a completely unnecessary and racist film. I get that they were trying to make a point that women everywhere deserve a voice (Miranda’s barely talked about workplace harassment does that better) but they ended up being racist, still a bit homophobic, and in complete disregard of cultural changes.

Going to the other side of the world and expecting that everyone will think like Americans because that’s the right way it’s so “Karen-White-Cis” coded that it could have been a good thing for the movie if they were more self-aware. Instead, they make a joke about Miranda actually trying to learn and respect the culture. I sure hope the new TV series is trying to do better.

Always that film that you want to see on the big screen. I wasn't expecting to laugh so hard but the driving scenes with Hayley Atwell are just comedy gold. RIP the best character.

I enjoyed it just as much as Mission Impossible the week before, it's a fun blockbuster, very pink and female-oriented, a rarity in a male-dominated scene. They try and mostly achieve to talk about all of that and Mattel's own problems, it's not perfect, but its a lot more self-aware than it needed to be.
